    It’s been almost two months since I attended Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour at MetLife Stadium, and I’m still buzzing over the otherworldly experience. I’ve been to concerts in the past, but nothing has even remotely come close to the whirlwind of emotions that this three-hour show entailed. After all, the tour does recap all 10 of Swift’s studio albums, encapsulating each time period through various sets and costumes, not to mention the music. My heartstrings were tugged at my teenage years being relived, and I almost lost my voice singing along to the 10-minute version of “All Too Well.” But lyrical impact put aside, as a fashion editor, I couldn’t help but notice the importance of the outfits through it all. 

    When you first enter the stadium, you’re surrounded by an army of Swifties, all shimmering in sequined dresses, bespoke costumes, and a plethora of handmade friendship bracelets ready to be traded. You could identify each era amongst the crowd, highlighting each attendee’s personal Swift preference through their chosen outfits. I spent weeks scrolling through people’s outfit videos on TikTok, with the popular sound of an AI-generated Swift declaring, “Oh my god, your Eras Tour outfit looks so f*cking good,” repeatedly playing in my head on a loop. However, seeing thousands of people with different looks was a fashion highlight. 

    Unlike other concerts, a singular look or theme doesn’t define The Eras Tour. Fans aren’t just pulling inspiration from an outfit based on appearance (or comfort). They’re connecting to the moments of Swift’s life (and discography) they feel most connected to. I opted for a black-sequined look in honor of Reputation (and because I currently need a little rebellious courage in my life). Swift’s performance costumes are created with immense detail and are often changed and updated to reflect new developments. Some might even sneakily feature a few easter eggs for her fans to solve. Her opening look, a custom Versace bodysuit, has already seen a few iterations since her first show.

Rare bags that are unique but not overly personalized tend to carry the highest value in the resale market but may be priceless to their owners. 

    So while we say yes, it is worthwhile to buy a Goyard bag, ultimately, the decision is a personal one that must factor in material, design, price, color, and utility. Hopefully, any bag purchased will be enjoyed and admired no matter the final cost.

    You’ve had the privilege of working with and knowing some of the most incredible Black creatives in the film industry and beyond—how have you been able to redefine how you view community?

    There are people I have been in community with who have not been in community with me. But when it’s a symbiotic relationship, it means people are okay with making themselves uncomfortable. If there’s a greater good at stake, it means showing up and standing shoulder to shoulder and being the cavalry when needed. There has to be mutual respect and mutual love on some level, and when that is there, we’re unstoppable. And anytime I’ve stepped out on faith and done a hard thing, I was never alone. Certainly, the Black entertainment community and the global Black community have always been 10 toes down for me, and that’s how I’ve come to define community. It’s asking yourself: do you live this? Do you breathe this? Will you lose sleep if you don’t stand together? I think for a lot of us, it took us a while to get to that point, but now we are arriving in droves at that place.

    Raise your hand if you’ve ever cringed looking at your weekly screentime report (don’t worry, mine is abysmal too).     Across Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and various media publications (including our very own), we’ve seen an amalgamation of coverage centered around phrases like “quiet luxury,” “stealth wealth,” or “old money dressing.” While the terms may differ, make no mistake, this idea is centered on discerning how wealth is displayed through clothing.     For an event like Sofia Richie’s wedding, where it’s taking place over multiple days and is a big moment because it’s a wedding, how long does the styling process take? I’m curious about the timeline of a process when it’s something huge like that.

    Liat Baruch: First of all, she’s an ongoing client. And actually, her sister has been my best friend for 25 years, so Sofia’s my sister. I’ve been working with her on this level for the past couple of years. It’s been a constant thing. For the wedding, it wasn’t like [I said], “Here are the ten looks,” and then I presented to [her looks] for the ten days leading up to the wedding and the five days after. It was more like we would do general shops [leading] up to the wedding. And from there, we extract the best pieces and accessorize them so they look perfectly refined [and] the way we want them to. It wasn’t like I had 17 mood boards with every look and all that stuff—it was very organic. That’s why it is so funny when people are blown away by it because it is what I do, and it’s what she does. 

    I love hearing more about the process. What does day one of working with someone look like? And how do you get on the same page or know they’re the right client for you? 

    Until now, it was hard because the whole point of me is that I don’t exist. It’s like you, Hillary, are calling me, and you’re like, “I have a board meeting; what am I wearing?” You’re not going to walk into the board meeting and say, “Liat styles me.” It’s your style; I just helped you get there. So, first, I meet them, and we usually go for a coffee to talk through what they’re looking for and what they need. Usually, they need help with their closet and feel they don’t have the right leather jacket or the right blazer. I typically like to start with an event, whether they have a bar mitzvah to go to for the week, they’re going to Hawaii, or they have an event of some sort, or just day-to-day looks and do not want to look the same every day.

    Because of word of mouth, most clients know [ahead of time] that our aesthetics align. That’s not to say that I can’t work with anyone who doesn’t share my aesthetic. It’s just that there are millions of people who do certain things really well. But if somebody liked how Sofia looked at the wedding, now they can see it and think they want something similar—and I can do that; that’s what I do.

I met her, and I just love her so much as a person. For the Oscars, I got to meet Lily for the first time. I had met Naomi twice prior. She’s literally an angel on Earth. They did give me a bit of advice when I was there with them at the Oscars. They were just like, “Listen, you’re in it. You’re strong, You’re powerful. You can do this”—just basically words of affirmation because they know what it feels like to suddenly be taking on this role, this iconic story that everyone loves, and the pressures that come with that. There was absolutely just love sent my way, and I really appreciated that from them.

    What has it been like to meet your peers and older Black women who are probably having their own kind of inner child healed by seeing you in this role?

    Well, getting to meet peers and especially older women [coming] up to me and [telling] me how the trailers and stuff have impacted them, it’s very surreal. It just makes me grateful and filled with so much joy and happiness and [pride] that I was chosen. It’s very weird though too. … You’re saying all these nice things about me. That’s so cool. I really appreciate it, but I just feel like a regular girl from Atlanta, Georgia. So when everyone’s like, “You’re breaking barriers, and this is history” … I’m thankful, but it’s almost this sense of you’re looking at yourself from outside of a window or something.

    When Bailey stepped into the role of Ariel, she entered the world of FODs  (First, Only, Different—a phrase coined by Shonda Rhimes). Bailey is quick to give flowers to the FODs who came before her, Brandy Norwood (who played Cinderella in the 1997 Rodgers and Hammerstein TV adaptation) and Anika Noni Rose (the voice of Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess, in The Princess and the Frog).

    For a girl who once played with mermaids with her sister, landing the part of Ariel is a dream come true for Bailey, and she hopes her casting is one day seen as standard and not extraordinary. “It’s crazy, because we’re in the year 2023. You would think that these firsts are not firsts anymore,” she says with wistful optimism. “I just hope that for the future it’s not such a shock anymore for a Black woman to be cast as Ariel and for that to just be a normal thing.”

    While the character of Ariel means so much to many, it’s beautiful to hear how much the character taught Bailey.

    “I’ve been comfortable really just being with somebody all the time. Somebody has always held my hand. I’ve never had to do anything alone. So this was really my first venture into solo adulthood. I had moved to London, and I was in intense rehearsals and stunts and mermaid training, and all of a sudden, I’m going through this not only physical transformation but [also] mental and spiritual transformation of me finding who I am on my own and building that confidence within myself to be able to do these things,” she says. “So I truly feel like Ariel taught me that I’m worthy, and I’m stronger than I thought. We were filming in the middle of the pandemic and in London, and my family couldn’t come visit me. So I was very isolated. Everything was closed down. I would literally go from work to home, and I would sleep on the weekends because I’d be so tired, and then I’d go right back to work. But looking back, I am happy that it was that way. [It] helped me mirror the emotions Ariel was feeling in the film to where she felt trapped and isolated and ready to see a brand-new world where her heart belonged. I felt like there were parallels to both of our lives in the time that I was filming, and I was grateful for that.”

    Using the wrong cleanser is just as bad as not cleansing your skin effectively. Rouleau says if you don’t choose the right formula for your skin type, you can risk everything from irritation to dehydration and a compromised moisture barrier. In other words, you’re really rolling the dice, and no one wants to do that with their skin. 

    Luckily, Rouleau has tips for choosing the right cleanser for your skin type. Start by paying attention to the texture of the cleanser. “If you struggle with very oily skin, gel cleansers are the way to go,” she says. “If your skin is on the drier side, you can opt for a creamy cleanser (or, if you wear heavier makeup or lots of sunscreen, a balm for nighttime). For those with combination skin, I usually recommend a gel cleanser in the morning and a creamy lotion or balm cleanser at night.” 

    Just keep in mind the texture of the cleanser determines how it should be used. “Gel cleansers should be applied to wet skin, while cleansers with a cream, balm, or lotion texture should be applied to dry skin,” Rouleau says. “If you apply a cleanser to dry skin, start by massaging it for 30 seconds. Then, add water to emulsify and massage.” Once it’s dissolved sunscreen, makeup, dirt, and debris, wipe or rinse your skin clean.
