  • National Postal Museum Opens Alexander Hamilton Exhibition

National Postal Museum Opens Alexander Hamilton Exhibition

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 25, 2018

The original pistols used in the infamous 1804 duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr are on display at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum through June 24. They are featured in the exhibition “Alexander Hamilton: Soldier, Secretary, Icon,” along with mail, portraits, and postage and revenue stamps reflective of Hamilton’s life and career as the first U.S. treasury secretary.

The rare public showing represents the first time the pistols have been on public display in the Washington area.

Visitors of all ages will be drawn in to the man behind the musical that is sweeping the nation.

Elliot Gruber, National Postal Museum Director

The full exhibition remains on view through next March. Its opening coincides with the June opening of the hit Broadway play, Hamilton: An American Musical, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

The original dueling pistols used by Hamilton, former secretary of the treasury and retired two-star general, and Vice President Aaron Burr in the duel that resulted in Hamilton’s death are on loan to the museum from JPMorgan Chase & Co.

In a scene that is scarcely imaginable today, on July 11, 1804, Burr killed Hamilton in a duel. Burr had lost the U.S. presidential election of 1800 and the New York governor’s race of 1804. He blamed Hamilton’s outspoken opposition for both losses—especially a letter attributed to Hamilton and published in the Albany Register that referred to Burr as “despicable.” Burr then issued the challenge to a duel, which was set for a location outside New York City in nearby New Jersey.

In the 215 years since his untimely death at 49 in the duel with Burr, Hamilton has become an American icon. Stamps, money, movies, television miniseries, and now a hit Broadway musical, commemorate his meteoric rise and his sweeping vision for America’s future.

“In a Federalist-style gallery within the museum’s William H. Gross Stamp Gallery, visitors will see objects highlighting Hamilton’s extraordinary influence on our country,” said Elliot Gruber, director of the museum. “Visitors of all ages will be drawn in to the man behind the musical that is sweeping the nation.”

The exhibition features free franked covers signed by Hamilton from 1789 to 1794. As secretary of the treasury, he was permitted to send official correspondence for free by signing his name. This ensured that customs inspectors and collectors all over the country were kept busy responding to ceaseless requests for information about imports and exports, tonnage and construction of ships, trade routes and ports of call. His ability to interpret and remember this data made Hamilton the best-informed member of President George Washington’s first Cabinet.

The earliest postage stamps honoring Hamilton are on display, highlighting a marble bust of him at age 49, made by the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Ceracchi in 1794, as well as the original steel die for the 30-cent stamp. Multiple copies were made from the original bust. The exhibition showcases the one that belonged to Levi Woodbury, one of Hamilton’s successors as secretary of the treasury. It passed to Woodbury’s son-in-law, Montgomery Blair, who was postmaster general from 1861 to 1864. The bust is on loan from the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The Ceracchi bust of Hamilton appeared on the 30 cent stamp from 1870 until 1890. Hamilton’s portrait did not appear on postage again until 1956.

“History remembers Alexander Hamilton as the pioneering first secretary of the treasury, but he was also responsible for the Post Office Department,” said Daniel Piazza, chief curator of philately. “He used the mail to collect import and export data from customs officers all over the country, and his ability to interpret this data made Hamilton the best informed member of Washington’s first Cabinet.”

A special website augments the exhibition, providing additional access to the rich content presented. The museum is hosting a series of educational programs and events in support of the exhibition.

  • Chocolate Lovers’ Special at Texas State Railroad Kicks Off the 2018 Season

Chocolate Lovers’ Special at Texas State Railroad Kicks Off the 2018 Season

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 2, 2018

In the company of Cupid, hearts, roses, doves and lovebirds, chocolate is probably the most iconic symbol of Valentine’s Day. Everyone knows that “everything is better in Texas” and that includes the romance of chocolate Texas rail-style. Riding in a vintage railcar while savoring the rich flavors of mouthwatering desserts is a sweet way to inaugurate the season aboard the Texas State Railroad. The first Chocolate Lovers’ Special rolls out of the Rusk station on Saturday, Feb. 10, with another excursion following on Sunday, Feb. 11.

Passengers will be indulged with a decadent array of Texas-style desserts while riding the rails through the historic hill county of the Piney Woods. One of the inspiring chocolate delicacies on the menu is the Railroad’s very own version of the popular “Texas Sheet Cake,” described by noted New York-based travel, fashion and active lifestyle writer Jillian Downer as “the little black dress of sheet cakes.”

It is hard to imagine another food that evokes a craving equal to that of chocolate. The gooey, dark, rich sweet has been branded with many names including xocoatl, jocolatte and chockelet, but despite its title, from ancient civilization to the cyber-powered 21st-century society, one common thread remains: chocolate is a heavenly treat that is in a category all by itself. When words are inadequate to express one’s feelings for another, chocolate will say it all.

The four-hour, round-trip excursion between Palestine and Rusk includes a short layover at the beautifully renovated historic Palestine depot. On the return trip, snuggling with a sweetie in a luxurious Presidential car is bound to inspire sweet talk in rhythm to the wheels on the rails. Just as universal as chocolate is to romance, so is classic rail travel. Texas State Railroad is a master at blending the two romances into one classic adventure.

This quintessential day trip, only a few hours from the metropolitan communities of Dallas and Houston, is designated “The Official Railroad of Texas.”

Visit www.TexasStateRailroad.net or call 855-632-7729 to book.

Dr. Giuseppina (Pina) Foti, Managing Director at Accademia StudioItalia, will receive the 2017 IWEC award, honoring nearly 30 years of award-winning, innovative language education, training, and cultural programs.

IWEC (International Women’s Entrepreneurial Challenge) is a New York-based international economic empowerment organization exclusively for women business owners, formed in 2007 with the assistance of the U.S. Department of State. In addition to the State Department, its founders include the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce (MCC), and the FICCI/FLO Chamber in New Delhi. IWEC’s mission is to develop a global business network for successful women entrepreneurs, helping them gain and expand access to international markets by presenting a platform to exchange knowledge, experience and connections, and to promote dialogue among women entrepreneurs and business leaders throughout the world, an ecosystem with a combined income of over US$25 billion per year.

I am thrilled to nominate Giuseppina Foti for her trailblazing work to be a reference point for women in leadership roles in the Italian economy, promoting and strengthening the spirit of cross-collaboration and partnership among women leaders.

    Diane Thompson, CEO of Novaris

Since 2007, IWEC has gathered some of the world’s largest and most successful women-owned companies in an intensive three-day program to inform, connect and celebrate the work of women entrepreneurs from all corners of the globe. This year’s event is being held in Redmond, Washington State, on Nov. 12-14.  The conference closes with an awards gala celebrating the groundbreaking work of 53 new awardees from Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia and the Americas. The conference, named ‘Connecting Women Businesses Globally: Accelerating Growth Through Innovation & Technology’ is sponsored by Microsoft, who is also hosting the event at their global headquarters.

“I am truly honored to accept the 2017 IWEC Award, and to connect with other women entrepreneurs from all over the world during the 10th anniversary conference.  We’re grateful for this incredible recognition of our work to support culture, education, and connecting with people through language,” stated Dr. Foti of her nomination.

Giuseppina (Pina) Foti has a Ph.D. in foreign languages and literature with a focus on modern philology and language instruction. She started her three companies, Accademia StudioItalia, ILS University and International Language School 30 years ago, and through her successful career, her schools have taught languages to thousands of students. Accademia StudioItalia, her school for Italian language and culture, received the Star Award from London’s Student Travel Magazine for five years in a row, from 2012 to 2017. The school has an active role in the annual General Status of the Italian Language meetings held by Italy’s Bureau of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Foti is a member of the Italian Equal Opportunities Committee of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, an adviser to the World Association of Women Entrepreneurs, member of the Italian Association of Women Entrepreneurs, and founding member of Enterprising Girls, a network for women in business. Further, Dr. Foti is Vice President of University Women of Europe (UWE).

Diane Thompson, CEO of Novaris is the past IWEC awardee who nominated Dr. Foti for the IWEC award. She stated of the awardee: “I am thrilled to nominate Giuseppina Foti for her trailblazing work to be a reference point for women in leadership roles in the Italian economy, and promoting and strengthening the spirit of cross-collaboration and partnership among women leaders. Giuseppina drives participation and initiatives that bolster the presence of women in key decision-making roles within the public and private sectors. She’s a priceless addition to IWEC, and a role model for women’ s business development efforts in Rome.”

The November conference marks the first time that IWEC welcomes a Conference Chairperson, Her Royal Highness Princess Noor Asem of Jordan, who will provide part of the welcoming remarks and address the audience on empowering women’s entrepreneurship in her region. Other conference speakers include one of the most influential businesswomen from China, Yang Lan, owner of Sun Media, one of the largest media conglomerates in that country; she was also the ambassador of the Beijing Olympic Games. She is joined by new IWEC Board member and keynote speaker Ibukun Awosika, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the First Bank of Nigeria Limited; Melanie Alavi, Director of Customer Technology Marketing at UPS; Fernando Hernández, Director or Supplier Diversity at Microsoft; Peter Martínez, CEO of Game Changer Tec; Jackie Sturm, Sr. VP of Supply Chain and Innovation at Intel; Aylton de Souza, Worldwide Enterprise Mobility and Security Business Lead at Microsoft, and other key drivers of innovation, technology and business development.

“IWEC understands that providing access, resources, and support to help enable the success of female entrepreneurs is key to ensuring women’s active, sustainable participation in the global economy, and contributes to closing the gender gap. We provide a global forum to exchange knowledge, experience, and connectivity among women business owners, setting the stage for education, disruptive business opportunities, roads to joint ventures, and promoting social dialogue among women entrepreneurs and business leaders,” said Ruth A. A Seasonal Celebration at Verde Canyon Railroad.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 14, 2017

What better season offers the perfect reason to savor the Arizona outdoors than Autumn? The cooling temperatures inspire the riparian foliage to mellow, filling the Verde Canyon with gold, amber, and scarlet. The ripened bronzing of the wilderness is echoed by rich Arizona craft beers served during Verde Canyon Railroad’s ever-popular Ales on Rails event every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from October 5th to the 29th.

The opportunity to savor these frothy delights will start each day at 11:00 a.m. on the depot patio with a great selection of Arizona craft beers, ranging from light and summery Kolsch to high-octane lagers and IPAs, from coppery-red and Scotch ales to dark stouts and chocolate porters. These Oktoberfest-style brews may have German roots but all are produced in Arizona breweries. The party continues on-board where beers may be purchased during the Fall Colors Tour, along with Verde Canyon Railroad’s own private-label beers from Sedona’s Oak Creek Brewing Company.

Ales on Rails features an optional lunch of grilled sausages, special-recipe potato salad and hot pretzels served with a variety of gourmet cheeses perfect for dipping.  All pair well with Arizona beers making it easy to find a winning combination.

Passengers savor the rich flavors of harvest season, raising a Verde Canyon Railroad insignia glass full of ice-cold beer while drinking in the fine autumn scenery and wild beauty of the Canyon. Stepping outside from the comfortable interior coaches to an adjoining open-air viewing car is the best vantage point to take in the fresh air and vibrant foliage during this four-hour excursion near the remote Sycamore Wilderness, accessible only by rail.

Real rails, real people, and a real adventure make Verde Canyon Railroad a feast for each of the senses. The historic rail line was once a treasured connection between the booming copper mines of Jerome and distant civilization. Today, deemed an Arizona Treasure by the State of Arizona, passengers relax in plush comfort as the train rumbles into this same, untouched terrain where resident raptors soar from the edges of deep red cliffs, and the perennially-flowing water of the Verde River weaves an awe-inspiring path through the high desert.

  • Unlimited Horizons: The Freewinds Maiden Voyage Anniversary Recaps Transcendent 12 Months for Scientology

Unlimited Horizons: The Freewinds Maiden Voyage Anniversary Recaps Transcendent 12 Months for Scientology

    [ad_1]

The world’s most dedicated Scientologists cast off for a week-long cruise to celebrate successes and set the agenda for an expansive year across the seven seas

Saint Lucia—an Eastern Caribbean island nation famous for its pair of dramatically tapered mountains, volcanic beaches, reef-diving sites, fishing villages, and an interior rainforest that leads to cliff-edge waterfalls—was the postcard-perfect scene for the convergence of several hundred of the world’s most dedicated Scientologists. They gathered for a week-long convocation aboard the legendary 440-foot Motor Vessel, Freewinds, a religious retreat for the Church of Scientology, in celebration of the 29th Anniversary of the ship’s Maiden Voyage.

Indeed, this was no ordinary cruise, in fact, those on board form a stellar group who have collectively spearheaded the Church’s expansion through the creation of new Churches of Scientology in their respective zones.

What’s more, the week-long gathering is helmed by the religion’s ecclesiastical leader, Mr. David Miscavige, so again, this is no ordinary cruise.

The week launched with Mr. Miscavige’s recap of just some of the highlights from the year’s progress:

“Since last we met, our solar system of Churches now includes: Budapest, HungaryHarlem, New YorkSan Diego, California; and, the rim of our terrestrial world in Auckland, New Zealand,” he said, before moving on to detail the most recent Church grand openings in the San Fernando Valley, CaliforniaMiami, Florida; and Copenhagen, Denmark.

But the convocation is not just about looking back, Mr. Miscavige told the assembled. This is the week that sets the agenda for Scientologists around the world to continue the record-breaking expansion that has made the religion a thriving, upward-moving worldwide phenomenon.

For the rest of the year, the Freewinds is an extraordinary vessel of benevolent distribution, as she logs and charts adventures that bring humanitarian and educational programs to the Caribbean and Latin America; as well as providing spiritual services for the most advanced Scientologists all year long.

But for this week, the guests on the annual cruise will not only celebrate their own good works on behalf of the Church, but will target, plan and put into action future expansion while participating in extraordinary evening events, each with a unique and striking focus.

HONORING A HUMANITARIAN SHIP OF STATE

When Mr. Miscavige greeted the audience the first night, he also paid homage to the Freewinds, whose crew—including five master mariners and 133 survival craftsmen—has compiled a staggering 5,000 years of cumulative experience at sea. The ship, he said, has been virtually rebuilt since her Maiden Voyage, making her “the safest ship on seven seas.”

But her safety is not her only hallmark, and not her particular calling card. It is in fact her ongoing mission for humanity as she plies the azure Caribbean waters.

From human rights campaigns reaching island inhabitants across the windward isle of Saint Vincent; to drug education proliferation over Bonaire’s TV and radio airwaves to counteract endemic drug abuse; and morals education by way of The Way to Happiness, which earned exuberant praise from Aruba’s Ministry of Justice.

In fact, the value of the Freewinds’ mission was repeatedly acknowledged in testaments from grateful island officials who have personally witnessed the benefits.

The interaction of the Freewinds and her crew with society shows “not just merely extending a hand, or granting a favor, but a social responsibility,” said the Saint Lucia Minister over Infrastructure and Ports, in a video tribute. “That passion is one of love, one of sincerity, and one of true friendship and happiness.”

A scholar from Barbados added, “The Freewinds doesn’t just come in, spend some time and leave. They look for areas where the Freewinds can help. And it’s not about helping financially. It’s about helping find solutions to issues, to concerns, to problems.”

While finally, a Ministry of Tourism representative from St. Kitts and Nevis declared: “Even though we don’t say it often enough or loud enough, just remember, the Caribbean appreciates the Freewinds.”

AN EVENING IN RECOGNITION OF FOUNDER L. RON HUBBARD

The next night, guests were treated to a biographical presentation in honor of L. Ron Hubbard (LRH). It was an evening informing and astounding those in attendance with countless previously untold tales of Mr. Hubbard’s legacy. Tales presented by the LRH Biographer, Dan Sherman, that spoke to both Mr. Hubbard’s kindness and his vision.

At the heart of the evening were on-camera interviews featuring vivid personal accounts of those who had encountered L. Ron Hubbard and were forever changed.

There was the Spanish cabin steward who went on to become a “better person with my fellow man, and that’s all thanks to Ron.” Similarly, the Portuguese entrepreneur who spoke of “the power” from LRH “that made my life what I am today.” Followed by the Caribbean synagogue president who told of Mr. Hubbard “capturing the mood and atmosphere” of the New World’s oldest synagogue in their cherished photo journal. Concluding with the island radio personality and architect who recalled one Captain L. Ron Hubbard urging his Caribbean classmates to empower themselves through education and thus whom he called “a Captain not only for a ship, for me, he’s a Captain that helps us direct our lives.”

Mr. Sherman concluded his presentation with a message, “Whatever you do, emulate L. Ron Hubbard. His competence and proficiency sufficient to produce an emotional impact—emulate it. And thereby sow his compassion and kindness through the lives you, too, encounter.”

A NIGHT IN CELEBRATION OF HUMANITARIAN ACTION

Passengers aboard for the Maiden Voyage also attended a formal event honoring the International Association of Scientologists (IAS) and its stellar commitment to not only protect and support the religion, but accelerate the betterment of mankind, through the myriad international humanitarian campaigns. They include:

    • The Citizens Commission on Human Rights who exposed and curbed psychiatric abuse in Tokyo hospitals, across South Africa’s largest tribal kingdom and on the streets of South Florida.
    • United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights, who sparked a human rights movement in Toronto—the most ethnically diverse city on Earth, in Africa’s most populous land of Nigeria and in Sri Lanka, where Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and Muslims worked together to spread the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
    • Drug-Free World, who carried out their crusades with The Truth About Drugs across Athenian neighborhoods, through Baja’s notorious drug transit route and up and down the playing fields of the European Football Championships.
    • And finally, through the social betterment work of IAS-supported programs where the Way to Happiness generated a moral resurgence through Cuban towns and villages, Study Technology ignited an education revolution in Mongolia and Narconon drug rehabilitation struck at the core of Nepal’s addiction culture.

As announcements of accomplishments came to a close, a monumental one was unveiled. And it rode directly upon the wake of the Freewinds in tandem with IAS support, because working with volunteers, law enforcement and Scientologists, literally millions of copies of The Way to Happiness, The Truth About Drugs and The Story of Human Rights were distributed in major cities and jungle villages throughout Colombia.

As a result, what was once the acknowledged drug capital of the world, and a country the United Nations classified as the “worst humanitarian crisis in the Western Hemisphere,” soon became the “Colombian Miracle” with military human rights violations dropping an incredible 96 percent.

Directly on the heels of that was the grand opening of Colombia’s IAS-sponsored National Church of Scientology where they continued to work tirelessly to provide the solutions for restoring humanity. Soon to follow was the astounding peace accord between Colombia’s national government and FARC troops, after which 8,500 police were personally trained by Freewinds staff in vital life skills for use in reintegrating FARC troops back into society.

But, even so, that’s not the end of the story. Because, less than a decade after the Freewinds first docked in Cartagena, Mr. Miscavige pronounced the next epic accomplishment: that on the 5th of May, 2017, the nation of Colombia awarded the Church of Scientology full religious recognition.

It was yet another example that the combination of the Freewinds, Scientologists, global changemakers and the inspiration of L. Ron Hubbard’s technology for living, continue to lead to the betterment of humanity.

So, as the passengers prepared to leave the ship, they and thousands more are bound and determined to resume their year-long work of uplifting society and improving humanitarian conditions worldwide, one nation, indeed one port at a time, for the next 51 weeks.

Setting the goal of opening another 50 Churches, there’s still plenty of sailing ahead, as the Church seeks to reach all people in all lands. With a course guided by charts from the Belt of Orion to the Milky Way, they’re ocean bound to discover what’s ahead. And thus, Mr. Miscavige bid all passengers this finale message:

    “I thank you for attending…

“I thank you for all you have thus far achieved…

“And, all that I know you’ll achieve in this year to come…

    “Good luck and Godspeed!”

  • Two Million and Counting at Verde Canyon Railroad

Two Million and Counting at Verde Canyon Railroad

    [ad_1]

On May 25, 2017, Verde Canyon Railroad celebrates a new milestone with a very special giveaway. One lucky passenger, not to be revealed until May 25, will hold the title of the train’s two-millionth rider. In celebration of the occasion his or her entire party will be upgraded to the luxury-class caboose! All are welcome to join the celebration, enjoying cupcakes prior to train’s 1pm departure.

How many owls live on planet earth? How many months have passed since the dawn of humanity? And how many people, over the past 27 years, has Verde Canyon Railroad brought into the rare unspoiled riparian splendor along its tracks? The answer to these questions: two million.

Hard to fathom that the remote Verde Canyon has played host to so many over the years. For those traveling the route today, they feel very removed from the hustle and bustle of cities and commerce. The quietude of the canyon belies the crowd of visitors, as each train ride is a peaceful experience: the breeze and the birds interrupted only by occasional joyous laughter, a clickety-clack of the wheels on steel, a horn echoing off the red rock canyon walls as the engines announce their presence.

From its early 20th Century days as the brawny muscle hauling product for the United Verde Copper Company from Jerome, to its rebirth as a premiere tourist attraction, this scenic train has carved a popular path through the Arizona wilderness. Its 1990 inception as Verde Canyon Railroad was the start of a new chapter in the life of the rails and the meandering riparian wilderness through which it passes. By 2005 the Governor of Arizona appointed Verde Canyon Railroad an “Arizona Treasure” and the passenger service commemorated its one millionth passenger.

In 2012 Verde Canyon Railroad celebrated both the Arizona State Centennial and its 100th birthday. Over the decades, Verde Canyon Railroad has hosted visitors from all over the world and has been the site for many important events and family milestones. The train has grown from a small consist of a handful of cars to nearly a quarter-mile in length, featuring nine living room-style, first-class cars, one historically-restored coach, a private-charter luxury caboose and offered unlimited access to six open-air viewing cars. The depot has expanded to include a southwestern-style depot, a museum, outdoor dining area, gift shops, café and colorful storyboards detailing the canyon’s history and wild denizens.

Now, the next chapter of Verde Canyon Railroad’s success: the count reaches two million passengers. On May 25, 2017, Verde Canyon Railroad celebrates its new milestone with a very special giveaway. One lucky passenger, not to be revealed until the day of arrival, will hold the title of the train’s two-millionth rider.  In celebration of the occasion his or her entire party will be upgraded to the luxury-class caboose!

Real rails, real people, and a real adventure make Verde Canyon Railroad a feast for each of the senses.  Passengers relax in plush comfort as the train rumbles into rugged terrain, where eagles soar from the edges of deep red cliffs, and the Verde River weaves a sinuous path through the high desert.  At Verde Canyon Railroad it has always been about the journey, not the destination.

Merely a stone’s throw from the hillside mining town of Jerome, Verde Canyon Railroad’s Clarkdale depot is in the heart of the Verde Valley, a diverse crossroads featuring amazing adventures in every direction. Only two hours from Phoenix and 25 minutes from Sedona, Verde Canyon Railroad is the perfect Arizona day trip. Reservations may be made at VerdeCanyonRR.com or at 800.293.7245.
