All the Best Red Carpet Fashion from the 2024 Venice Film Festival

    [ad_1]

The Venice Film Festival has begun—get ready for 11 days of some of the best red carpet fashion of the year. WireImage

While last year’s Venice Film Festival was a quieter, more subdued occasion than usual due to the SAG-AFTRA and WAG strikes, the 2024 iteration is expected to bring the usual array of A-list filmmakers and celebrities to the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido for a week and a half of premieres, screenings and parties.

Isabelle Huppert is the 2024 jury president, and this year’s cinematic line-up is packed with some of the most anticipated movies of the year. Todd PhillipsJoker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, as is Luca Guadagnino’s Queer (with Daniel Craig and Jason Schwartzman), Pablo Larrain’s Maria (starring Angelina Jolie) and Halina Reijn’s Babygirl (Nicole Kidman), among many others. Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, screened out of competition, will open the festival.

Along with plenty of must-see films, the stars also bring their sartorial best for the glamorous film festival in Venice, Italy, strutting down the red carpet in fashionable designs—this is, after all, the very event that brought us couture moments like Florence Pugh’s dazzling black glitter Valentino ensemble at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere, along with Zendaya’s custom leather Balmain dress in 2021 and Dakota Johnson in bejeweled Gucci.

The 81st annual Venice International Film Festival kicks off on August 28 and runs through September 7, which means a whole lot of high-fashion moments are headed for Lido. Below, see the best red carpet fashion from the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

  • Eva Green Wins $1 Million Paycheck For “B-Shitty-Movie” She Never Filmed

Eva Green Wins $1 Million Paycheck For “B-Shitty-Movie” She Never Filmed

    [ad_1]

Eva Green, a French actress known for Casino Royale and Penny Dreadful, was awarded $1 million Friday by a British court after a legal fight with film financiers over a “B-shitty-movie” she feared would harm her career.

Green sued White Lantern Films and SMC Specialty Finance for the fee she was owed for the planned independent sci-fi project called A Patriot. Set to star in and executive produce the movie in late 2019, earlier this year Green said that she had concerns over the alleged constraints put on her stunt training by production.

The actor claimed that her training period had been slashed from four weeks to five days, a choice that can be “extremely dangerous for action films,” she said in court. Green also referenced the tragic 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. “You look at what happened with Alec Baldwin on the movie Rust, the producers cutting corners, no safety measures, and a young woman got killed,” she said. (Baldwin, who has denied responsibility in the shooting, recently had his involuntary manslaughter charge dropped.) Green also indicated concern that the dwindling budget would affect the film’s production quality.

Producers filed a counterclaim against Green for breach of contract, arguing that Green never intended for the project to move forward. White Lantern’s legal team also alleged that Green “made unreasonable demands about crew, locations, and equipment,” Reuters reported. Green denied these claims, saying in court: “In the 20 years that I have been making films, I have never broken a contract or even missed one day of shooting.”

Sensational private WhatsApp messages from Green about her would-be collaborators were revealed as part of the court proceedings. Among the correspondence, Green called executive producer Jake Seal “pure vomit,” a “devious sociopath,” and “evil.” She also referred to members of his team as “shitty peasant crew members from Hampshire” after the shooting location was switched from Ireland, according to The Guardian

In his judgment in favor of Green, Judge Michael Green said that while the actor “may have said some extremely unpleasant things” about producers and crew members, “this was born from a genuine feeling of concern” that the project “would be of very low quality.” He concluded that Green “did not renounce her obligations under the artist agreement; nor did she commit any repudiatory breaches of it.” The counterclaim was dismissed.

The judge described the actor as “in some senses a frustrating and unsatisfactory witness” and said that while he could “understand the torment it must have been for her to have all her private texts and WhatsApp messages revealed in open court and scrutinized. . . some of her explanations for the language she used and the feelings she expressed—such as they were down to her ‘Frenchness’—were not credible or adequate.”

And, yet. “I have to say that, having heard him give evidence, I can see how it might be possible to take an instant dislike to him,” the judge wrote of Seal. “He was at times patronizing, sarcastic and denigrating. I found him to have an innate aggression and can understand why Ms. Green and others might have been displeased to be told that they had to make the film under his full control.”

After winning her court case, Green released a statement stating that she had been “forced to stand up to a small group of men, funded by deep financial resources, who tried to use me as a scapegoat to cover up their own mistakes” and was “proud that I stood up against their bullyboy tactics.”

The 42-year-old also reacted to criticism of her during the legal battle. “There are few things the media enjoys more than tearing a woman to pieces,” Green said. “It felt like being set upon by hounds; I found myself misrepresented, quoted out of context, and my desire to make the best possible film was made to look like female hysteria. It was cruel and it was untrue.”

  • Eva Green Defends Private Messages In Court Describing Film Crew As ‘S**tty Peasants’

Eva Green Defends Private Messages In Court Describing Film Crew As ‘S**tty Peasants’

    [ad_1]

Eva Green said having her private messages exposed during a film-related trial has been “humiliating.”

The “Casino Royale” actor took the witness stand Tuesday in London’s High Court where several WhatsApp messages between Green and her agent, as well as with director Dan Pringle, were read aloud, per Variety.

Green described the production crew of science fiction thriller “A Patriot,” which collapsed in 2019 due to a lack of funding, as “shitty peasants.” She said the finance company, Sherborne, was full of “sad little people” and “arseholes” and called producer Jake Seal “the devil.”

Green is suing Sherborne and production company White Lantern for a $1 million “pay or play” fee due to their failure to secure financing. They allege she deliberately undermined the production to see it fail and acquire the script herself, however, and are countersuing.

They claim Green engaged in “conspiracy, deceit and unlawful interference.” Hearings in the case began late January, when Green’s attorney, Edmund Cullen, claimed the film had been a “passion project” for her — and that Green was being unfairly portrayed as a “diva.”

Green, who was an executive producer on the film, testified Tuesday.

“I have a very direct way of saying things,” said Green on the witness stand, according to Page Six. “I was not expecting to have my WhatsApp messages exposed in court. It’s already very humiliating.”

Green reportedly added that “sometimes you say things you don’t mean” and likened her impassioned messages to a statement by Daniel Craig. Her former co-star famously told Time Out after reprising his role as 007 for the third time that he’d rather die than do so again.

“There’s a famous example of Daniel Craig saying he would rather ‘slash my wrists’ than do another Bond movie,” said Green. “He did honor his contract, he did another Bond movie, he didn’t slash his wrists. Sometimes you say things under extreme pressure, and it just comes out.”

Green allegedly called “A Patriot” a “fucking nightmare” and told an associate, “We had to get out,” however. Whether this indicates intentional sabotage of the production and a resultant breach of Green’s contract remains to be concluded in court.

“It doesn’t mean I wasn’t going to honor my contract,” said Green. “If called to set, I would have done this movie, even though it would have been a disaster. I have never broken a contract, I had to do it.”

  • Bayonetta’s Original Voice Actress: ‘I Urge People To Boycott This Game’ Over ‘Insulting’ Pay Offer

Bayonetta’s Original Voice Actress: ‘I Urge People To Boycott This Game’ Over ‘Insulting’ Pay Offer

    [ad_1]

Early in October, Japanese developer PlatinumGames, known for its action titles, told Game Informer that upcoming Switch exclusive Bayonetta 3 would not see voice actress Hellena Taylor reprise her iconic sultry role as the protagonist. Instead, Bayonetta’s english VA would now be Jennifer Hale, one of the industry’s most ubiquitous voice actresses who is known for roles like Commander Shepard. At the time, Platinum claimed that the replacement was due to “various overlapping circumstances” that made it “difficult” for Hellena to play Bayonetta once again. Over a week later, Taylor has gone on to social media to dispute Platinum’s account, suggesting that the studio wasn’t entirely being transparent about what actually happened.

Rather than losing out on the role because Hale was the better performer, or due to something like scheduling conflicts, Taylor claims that it was over pay. In a series of videos, Taylor goes on to say that Platinum apparently only offered her $4,000 for the entirety of the performance, which based on the trailers appeared to show the leading VA voicing multiple versions of the same character. For Taylor, who spent years studying her craft and has undeniably created one of the most memorable performances in the entire medium, the offer was considered insulting.

“We held auditions to cast the new voice of Bayonetta and offered the role to Jennifer Hale, whom we felt was a good match for the character,” game director Yusuke Miyata told Game Informer at the time. “I understand the concerns some fans have about the voice change at this point in the series, but Jennifer’s performance was way beyond what we could have imagined. I’m confident that her portrayal of Bayonetta will exceed our fans’ expectations.” According to Game Informer’s story, the publication found Hale’s performance virtually indistinguishable from that of Taylor.

But Taylor called the entire situation, while legal, “immoral.”

“Sometimes think I’m not very much like Bayonetta at all,” Taylor said in a video, in reference to her decision to speak up about what’s going on. “But I guess I am a little bit more like Bayonetta than I thought.

“I understand that boycotting this game is a personal choice, and there are those who won’t, she continued. “And that’s fine. But if you’re someone who cares about people, who cares about the world around you, who cares about who gets hurt with these financial decisions? Then I urge you to boycott this game.”

Taylor was originally cast in for the bullet time witch role in the acclaimed action game 2009, and reprised her role for the series in 2014’s follow-up. The series is widely considered one of Nintendo’s best modern franchises.

“I decided to do it to stand up in solidarity with people all over the world who do not get paid properly for their talents,” Taylor went on to say, likely partially in reference to a wider movement within voice acting right now that has seen major roles get replaced as the performers vie for better pay via unions.

“Fat cats cream off the top and leave us the crumbs,” she said, before noting that her inability to get a living wage from the industry has led her to suffer depression and anxiety. As she tells it, after being lowballed, she wrote to Hideki Kamiya, executive director on the game, to plead her case. She claims that he acknowledged her importance to the role and how much it would mean to fans. But the offer still apparently ended up being $4,000.

“I worried that I was going to be on the streets,” she said of the larger inability to be paid a living wage. “That terrified me so much that once I was suicidal. I am not afraid of the non-disclosure agreement. I can’t even afford to run a car. What are they going to do, take my clothes? Good luck to them.”

Nintendo, Bayonetta 3‘s publisher, and Taylor did not immediately respond to a request for comment. And while PlatinumGames hasn’t made an official statement on the matter, Kamiya himself did appear to respond on Twitter.

“Sad and deplorable about the attitude of untruth,” he wrote. “That’s what all I can tell now.”

But more glaringly, he ended the note by typing, “By the way, BEWARE OF MY RULES.” As far as anyone can tell, this seems to be in reference to Twitter usage, where infamously, Kamiya is said to block people left and right. To wit, his header image is just a series of posts where he warns “insects,” especially those of foreign languages such as English, that he has or will block them. And his pinned Twitter post is a series of “rules,” which, if broken, he warns people will lead to a block. “MY BLOCK BUTTON IS BIGGER THAN EVER,” it reads.

Sure enough, people and even publications who report on the Bayonetta 3 voice acting situation right now appear to be getting hit with the ban hammer by Kamiya. Meanwhile, other voice actors are chiming in with their anecdotes and experiences. Sean Chiplock, who voiced Revali in Breath of the Wild, another Nintendo-published game, claims he was only given around 2,000 to 3,000 dollars for his role as it was based on the number of hours in the studio. But he noted this pay was largely because he was voicing three different characters, not one.

“Bayonetta always stands up for those who have less power, and stands up for what is right,” Taylor said in her videos. “And in doing this, you stand with her,” she said of player’s potential decision to boycott the game. In the videos, Taylor also wished Hale, the new Bayonetta, all the best. But she still had harsh words to say about what taking on Bayonetta’s role would mean to her.

“But she has no right to say she is the voice of Bayonetta, I created that voice,” Taylor said. “She has no right to sign merchandise as Bayonetta, any more than I have the right to sign as Eva Green even though I was her parent on video game The Golden Compass. That betrayal is hers, and hers alone. They’ll probably try and do a spin-off with Jeanne. Don’t buy that either.”

The final video Taylor shared was directed entirely at Nintendo, PlatinumGames, and “fat cats” in general. It was a retelling of Lazarus the beggar, from the bible, and a larger critique on the morals that come with emphasizing money over people.

Bayonetta 3 will release for the Nintendo Switch on October 28th.
