  • Escaped Georgia inmates threatened to kill Lyft driver while fleeing to Florida, affidavit says

    [ad_1]

Court records have revealed new details about how three inmates escaped from the DeKalb County Jail and commandeered a terrified Lyft driver’s car to flee to south Florida.

The three inmates, identified Stevenson Charles, Yusuf Minor, and Naod Yohannes, were able to get out of the jail after compromising part of a cell late Sunday night, officials said. They remained on the run until they were arrested early Tuesday morning in Broward County, Florida.

Once out of the jail, the three men were picked up by an unnamed man and taken to Minor’s girlfriends’ home, U.S. Marshal Thomas Brown said. Then, using a fake, female name, they ordered a Lyft ride.

Officers tracked the car as it traveled to south Florida with the aid of license plate readers, devices that can alert law enforcement to the locations of wanted vehicles. When they caught up with the car and tried to stop it, one of the inmates jumped out and ran but was arrested along with a second inmate, according to a court affidavit.

The inmates’ escape was discovered early Monday during a routine security check of the DeKalb County Jail, authorities said.

    DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office

Investigators also learned that the men used the Lyft driver’s credit card for a short-term rental of a home in Miramar, Florida, where officers apprehended the third inmate and rescued the driver, court records state.

The driver told investigators that she was held in the car for six to 10 hours as they tried to gain access to her phone and online banking records. After trying to escape once, she endured “increased threats of being shot, raped, and tortured,” an FBI agent wrote in an affidavit.

“As you can imagine, the Lyft driver is very traumatized by this,” Brown said.

Lyft said in a statement to CBS News, “We are deeply concerned by this incident and relieved that the driver is safe. Our hearts are with the driver and we have reached out to offer support. Lyft is working closely with law enforcement to assist in any way we can as the investigation continues.”

All three inmates were charged with kidnapping as well as the escape, according to criminal complaints.

Who are the DeKalb County Jail inmates who escaped?

Charles, 24, was being held on murder and armed robbery charges and is serving a federal life sentence. Minor, 31, faces two counts of armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Yohannes, 25, is charged with simple assault, arson, and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution.

Before they were captured, federal authorities had issued particularly strong warnings advising the citizens to be wary of Charles, who has had several run-ins with law officers in Georgia and Florida. He had been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of kidnapping and bank robbery, a federal agent wrote in a Monday affidavit regarding the recent jail escape.

After being sentenced, the agent wrote, Charles was turned over to DeKalb County authorities on Dec. 5 to face the murder charge, details of which were not immediately available.

In one of multiple cases involving Charles in South Florida, he is accused of meeting a man through the Grindr online dating application and then pulling a gun on him when they met in person at a Miami residence in 2022. Charles then drove the man to various Miami area banks, withdrawing money from the victim’s accounts, court records show.

The U.S. Marshals Service took the lead in tracking down Charles, while a regional task force focused on the other two inmates. Marshals said intelligence gathered from recorded jail phone calls helped investigators identify people who assisted the escape.

Inmates took advantage of an aging jail

DeKalb County Chief Deputy Temetris Atkins said the jail, which is more than 30 years old, has aging infrastructure that inmates were able to exploit. He declined to provide specific details about how the escape occurred, citing security concerns, but said repairs have already been made and additional safeguards are being evaluated.

Sheriff Melody Maddox emphasized that while the escape was a serious breach, her office acted immediately and will continue pushing for improvements at the jail facility.

“We know it’s going to cost money,” Maddox said. “But we either pay now, or we pay later.”

Officials said no one was harmed during the escape, and the investigation into how it happened remains active.

  • Third inmate who escaped from southern Louisiana jail captured, officials say

    [ad_1]

The last of two inmates who had been on the run since escaping from a jail in the southern Louisiana city of Opelousas earlier this month has been caught, officials said Friday. A third inmate who was also part of the escape died by suicide after being caught by police, authorities previously said.

Keith Anthony Eli II, 24, was taken into custody in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said in a news release. Opelousas is located about 25 miles north of Lafayette.

Guidroz said Eli was captured by narcotics detectives and a SWAT team thanks to a tip.

At the time of his escape, Eli was held on an attempted second-degree murder charge.

The three men had escaped the St. Landry Parish Jail on Dec. 3 by removing concrete blocks from an upper wall area, Guidroz said at the time.

Authorities said the inmates then used sheets and other materials to scale the exterior wall, climb onto a first-floor roof and lower themselves to the ground, Guidroz said.

Escapee Jonathan Joseph, 24, was captured on Dec. 5. He is in custody on multiple charges, including first-degree rape.

Joseph Harrington, 26, faced several felony charges, including home invasion. On Dec. 4, one day after the escape, he was recognized by a tipster while pushing a black e-bike. Police found the e-bike at a neighboring home and heard a gunshot while trying to coax him to leave the building. He had shot himself with a hunting rifle, Port Barre Police Chief Deon Boudreaux said by telephone to The Associated Press.

The escape came more than seven months after 10 inmates broke out of a New Orleans jail. All ten of since been captured.

  • French prisoners saw through bars, use bedsheets to escape overcrowded jail, officials say

    [ad_1]

Two French prisoners escaped from jail after sawing through the bars of their cells and using bedsheets to get out of the facility, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Guards noticed the break-out shortly before dawn, the prisons’ authority said. The facility is in the eastern city of Dijon.

The pair “seem to have sawn through bars” and “fled using bed sheets,” Dijon prosecutor Olivier Caracotch said. He did not provide further details on how exactly they used the bedding.

Union official Ahmed Saih, who represents prison officers at the facility, said the inmates used “old-fashioned, manual saw blades”.

The fugitives are a 19-year-old man held in pre-trial detention since October 2024 for attempted murder in a drug-related case, and a 32-year-old man incarcerated since 2023 over threats and violence against a partner, Caracotch said.

“Warning about the risk of a jail break for months”

The prison break comes 10 days after another escape in the western city of Rennes. A 37-year-old convict, who had more than year left to serve for theft, fled during an outing with fellow prisoners to the city’s planetarium. It was not immediately clear if he had been caught. The prison’s director was fired by Gerald Darmanin, France’s justice minister who is pushing through a plan to lock up the most dangerous drug traffickers in supermax prisons.

France has some of the worst prison overcrowding in Europe, ranking third worst after Slovenia and Cyprus, according to a Council of Europe report published in July. In early October, the national average was 135 inmates per 100 places available. Dijon prison, built in 1853, is in poor condition, with 311 inmates for 180 places, according to the justice ministry.

“Prison is very hard here,” an inmate released on Thursday after eight months, told AFP. “There were three of us in a cell: two on bunk beds and one sleeping on the floor.”

Staff unions have complained that the state is neglecting normal jails as it moves narco criminals into new supermax prisons. Three prison directors’ unions criticized Darmanin in a statement on Wednesday, before the Dijon escape. They accused him of “devoting all the resources of a debt-ridden state” to the high-security prisons for those accused of drug trafficking and jihadist attacks, and neglecting the “vast majority” of other jails.

“While the justice minister parades around in overfunded facilities, other (prison) services are suffering,” they said in a joint statement.

Saih said there had been reports of saw blades found inside the Dijon prison, and that staff had “been warning about the risk of a jail break for months.” He called for more staff and better equipment, including “gratings that cannot be sawn through.”

Darmanin last week announced the Dijon facility was scheduled to receive $7.3 million, as part of a program to eradicate mobile phones from six French prisons.

  • Sex offender mistakenly released from U.K. prison re-arrested after manhunt

    [ad_1]

London — A convicted sex offender who was mistakenly released early from a London prison was re-arrested Friday after more than a week of freedom, police said.

Brahim Kaddour-Cherif was one of two men set free in accidental releases from Wandsworth Prison over the past two weeks that have caused a political headache for the government and focused renewed attention on an overcrowded and overwhelmed prison system.

The other inmate, Billy Smith, 35, who was sentenced to nearly four years for fraud and accidentally released on the same day as Cherif, turned himself in at the Victorian-era lockup on Thursday.

Cherif, 24, a registered sex offender due to a previous indecent exposure conviction, was serving time for trespass with intent to steal. The Algerian national who overstayed a legal visit to the U.K. in 2019 was in the initial stages of deportation when he was allowed to walk off the prison ground on Monday.

Mistakenly released sex offender Brahim Kaddour-Cherif is shown in this undated photo.

    Metropolitan Police

He was stopped by police in north London in an arrest filmed by national broadcaster Sky News. He initially denied he was the man they were looking for, but then said he wasn’t to blame for being on the streets.

“I’m not Brahim, bro,” he initially told a police officer, who said he recognized his distinctive nose. “Everyone know him, he’s in (the) news,” Cherif said.

After police officers pulled out their phones to look at the photo of the wanted man, he effectively admitted he was Cherif.

“It is not my fault,” Cherif said. “They released me illegally.”

Both men were wrongly freed from Wandsworth, which was built in southwest London in the middle of the 19th century, and was already under scrutiny after another prisoner escaped two years ago by clinging to the underside of a food delivery truck.

The inadvertent releases followed more stringent security checks that were supposed to be in place after an asylum-seeker who inspired a rise of anti-immigrant protests was mistakenly freed from Chelmsford Prison, east of London, on Oct. 24.

Prison chiefs were summoned to a meeting Thursday to discuss the errors and said efforts were being made to update a system that still uses paper prison records.

The mistaken releases have become a source of heated debate and a political liability for the Labour government after being a thorn in the side of their Conservative predecessors.

According to government figures, 262 prisoners were released in error in the year ending March 2025, a 128% increase on the previous 12-month period.

Conservatives say the Labour government is to blame for a policy to release some inmates earlier to ensure prisons don’t exceed capacity.

But Labour has blamed 14 years of Conservative rule and years of austerity that has starved the Prison Service of resources.

“We inherited a prison system in crisis and I’m appalled at the rate of releases in error this is causing,” Justice Secretary David Lammy said after the arrest. “I’m determined to grip this problem, but there is a mountain to climb which cannot be done overnight.”

An official review of the issue has begun, but Ian Acheson, a former prison governor and adviser to U.K. government ministers, cited the overcrowding of Britain’s prisons as a reason for the rise in accidental releases.

Overcrowding has brought more pressure on the prison managers to get offenders out as quickly as possible, which has led to more movement of prisoners within the prison system, Acheson told the Telegraph newspaper.

“It is quite possible that one of the reasons for the increase in these mistakes has been the push and imperative to get people out,” Acheson told the Telegraph.

  • Congo prison escape attempt in Kinshasa leaves almost 130 dead, mostly in stampede, officials say

Congo prison escape attempt in Kinshasa leaves almost 130 dead, mostly in stampede, officials say

    [ad_1]

Kinshasa, Congo — An attempted jailbreak in Congo’s main prison in the capital left at least 129 people dead, most of them in a stampede, authorities said Tuesday. A provisional assessment showed that 24 inmates were shot dead by “warning” gunshots as they tried to escape from the overcrowded Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa early Monday, Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani said on the social platform X.

“There are also 59 injured people taken into care by the government, as well as some cases of women raped,” he said, adding that order has been restored at the prison, part of which was burned in the attack.

Makala, Congo’s largest penitentiary with a capacity for 1,500 people, holds over 12,000 inmates, most of whom are awaiting trial, Amnesty International said in its latest country report. The facility has recorded previous jailbreaks, including in 2017 when an attack by a religious sect freed dozens.

Gunfire inside the prison started around midnight on Sunday into Monday morning, residents said. A senior government official earlier said only two deaths were confirmed during the incident, a figure disputed by rights activists.

Videos that appeared to be from the prison showed bodies lying on the ground, many of them with visible injuries. Another video showed inmates carrying people who appeared to be dead into a vehicle.

There were no signs of forced entry into the prison, which is located in the city center, 3 miles from the presidential palace.

The attempted escape was plotted from inside the prison by inmates in one of the wings, Mbemba Kabuya, the deputy justice minister, told the local Top Congo FM radio.

In the hours that followed the attack, the road to the prison was cordoned off while authorities convened a panel to investigate the incident.

Makala — among other prisons in Congo — is so overcrowded that people often die from starvation, activists say. Scores of inmates have been released this year as part of efforts to decongest the prisons.

Justice Minister Constant Mutamba called the attack a “premeditated act of sabotage,” adding that those who “instigated these acts of sabotage… will receive a stern response.”

He also announced a ban on the transfer of inmates from the prison and said authorities will build a new prison, among other efforts to reduce overcrowding.

Philadelphia police arrest man believed to have helped teen murder suspect after escape

    [ad_1]

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police said they have made an arrest in connection to an escaped teen murder suspect. The announcement comes after authorities said they were questioning a person who they believed picked up 17-year-old Shane Pryor after he escaped from an emergency room parking lot at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia earlier this week.

Police say they have apprehended 18-year-old Michael Diggs.

Pryor, who was in custody for a 2020 murder of Tanya Harris, escaped late Wednesday morning while being transported by Juvenile Justice Services Center staffers after injuring his hand at the center. It is not known how the injury occurred.

Investigators said information suggested that Pryor had been picked up by an individual driving a cream-colored Ford shortly after his escape Wednesday. Later that day, police stopped a vehicle matching that description in they city’s Germantown section at Wakefield Street and Logan Avenue, and took two people in for questioning, including Diggs.

Diggs has formally been charged with hindering apprehension, and criminal conspiracy, among other charges.

“The arrest marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to bring all those involved in the incident to justice,” police said Friday.

New video released Thursday shows Pryor moments after he escaped from the parking lot in University City.

New video shows murder suspect ask to use phone moments after escape

At about 11:55 a.m., he was seen on surveillance video in the lobby of the Hub for Clinical Collaboration building, which is located across the street from the main hospital, according to U.S. Marshals. Pryor asked an employee to use a phone and, after being denied, he left.

By 12:29 p.m., investigators believe Pryor obtained a ride out of University City.

He was not handcuffed when he fled, police said, and it wasn’t known whether he was able to get out of his restraints or if he wasn’t restrained at all.

Are prisoner escapes on the rise in Pennsylvania? Here’s what we know

Police say Pryor was last seen heading from the area of 34th and Spruce streets to University Avenue and Civic Center Boulevard.

Pryor was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt, blue sweatpants, socks and slides. Police say he may have since taken off the sweatshirt.

He is 5’7″ tall and weighs 180 pounds.

“We know from our investigation so far, looking at a lot of video, that he was able to go in and out of a few buildings in this area,” Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore told reporters. “Pryor was seen talking to people “asking for a phone … whatever he could do to leave the area.”

Pryor has been on the run for three days and is considered dangerous, police said. His defense attorney Paul DiMaio said his client “has always maintained his innocence,” even in his initial statement to police.

Philadelphia Police news conference on escaped inmate in University City

Police were searching the buildings and using canines to search large multi-level parking garages, but no lockdowns had been imposed, he said. Officers were also checking the homes of his relatives in other parts of the city, Vanore said.

A reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to Pryor’s arrest is being offered by the U.S. Marshals Service.

“Shane Pryor is a dangerous and desperate individual and we will use every available resource to bring him back into custody,” said Robert Clark, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal. “Anyone who is found assisting him in his flight will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

In December, a judge denied his bit to have the case moved back to juvenile court, which could have something to do with his client’s decision to flee.

“He may have felt he wasn’t going to get a fair shake,” DiMaio said, adding, “He needs to turn himself in and he needs to do whatever we need to do to fight this case.”

Pryor’s mother is also urging her son to turn himself in.

“Just turn yourself in so it don’t get any worse than it has to be… mommy is fighting for you, I’ll always be fighting for you,” she said.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department’s tipline at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or dial 911.

Woman accused of killing pro cyclist tries to escape custody ahead of Texas murder trial:

    [ad_1]

A woman awaiting trial in the killing of professional cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson tried to run from officers escorting her to a doctor appointment Wednesday, authorities said.

Two corrections officers had taken Kaitlin Armstrong to the appointment and were escorting her back to a patrol vehicle “when she ran,” Travis County Sheriff spokeswoman Kristen Dark said.

Armstrong ran more than a block into a neighborhood, but she could be seen by deputies the entire time before she was caught, Dark said.

    U.S. Marshals

Dark would not disclose whether Armstrong was wearing shackles on her arms or legs, or what medical treatment prompted the appointment outside of the jail clinic.

The corrections officers did not draw their firearms, but more details on how she was apprehended would not be disclosed, Dark said. Armstrong and the two officers were taken to a hospital for a brief examination after the incident, and Armstrong was later returned to jail.

Armstrong’s attorney, Rick Cofer, did not immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.

Wilson, a 25-year-old competitive gravel and mountain bike racer from Vermont, was in Austin for a race she was among the favorites to win in May 2022 when she was found shot to death.

At the time, U.S. Marshals said police found Wilson bleeding and unconscious from multiple gunshot wounds. They performed CPR on her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Armstrong, 34, fled the country after her initial interviews with investigators, prompting a 43-day manhunt that ended with her arrest at a beachside hostel in Costa Rica. The U.S. Marshals and an anonymous donor was offered $20,000 in reward money for information leading to her arrest.

Armstrong was charged with murder. She faces up to 99 years in prison if convicted. Armstrong has pleaded not guilty.

Authorities have said Armstrong tried to change her appearance and used several aliases as she moved around Costa Rica while attempting to establish herself up as a yoga instructor in that country.

A witness told Inside Edition that Armstrong had left behind a $6,350 receipt for cosmetic surgery, adding that it appeared that something happened to her face.

“[She had] a bandage on her nose and she had blood in her nostrils,” Zachary Paulsen told the outlet.

Police have said Wilson had previously dated Armstrong’s boyfriend, cyclist Colin Strickland, who they say has cooperated with investigators and is not a suspect.

Dark said she didn’t know if Armstrong would face additional charges for the attempted escape.

An inmate who escaped from a New Hampshire correctional facility was shot and killed by a police officer after threatening two people with a knife, officials said.

On July 21, Darien Young walked off the grounds of the Calumet House transitional housing unit — a facility for prisoner re-entry in Manchester — and didn’t return, the New Hampshire Department of Corrections said in a news statement.

Six days later, Miami Beach police said they received a 911 call at 5:32 p.m. that a man was threatening two people with a knife at a Victoria’s Secret. Police arrived at the location and an officer shot Young.

Young, 29, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, Miami Beach Police said.

He later died, the corrections department confirmed.

Young, who was incarcerated for controlled drugs, burglary and other charges, was eligible for parole on July 31.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, the Miami Beach Police said.
