  • Detroit Lions to Roll With 2 New Starters vs. Rams

    [ad_1]

The Detroit Lions knew this Week 15 matchup against Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams was going to test their depth, and now we know just how much. After a rough week of injury updates, Detroit will roll out two brand-new starters in the secondary on Sunday.

    The bad news hit fast:

    • Kerby Joseph (knee)OUT
    • Thomas Harper (concussion)Downgraded to OUT
    • Brian Branch → Officially placed on IR following season-ending Achilles surgery

That’s three safeties unavailable… in a game where you’re facing Stafford, Puka Nacua, and one of the NFL’s top passing attacks.

    So who steps in?

    Next Men Up

Detroit will now lean on a completely reshuffled safety group featuring:

    • Avonte Maddox (29)
    • Erick Hallett (36) — elevated from the practice squad
    • Daniel Thomas (2)
    • Jalen Mills (13) — claimed off waivers just days ago

With Joseph and Harper out and Branch done for the year, the Lions are expected to start two new safeties against the Rams — likely Maddox and Hallett, though Thomas and Mills should also get some reps.

Hallett gets the call-up from the practice squad, while Mills, who arrived Wednesday, could be pushed straight into action. Not exactly ideal timing, but that’s life in December football.

    The Bottom Line

The Lions’ secondary is being held together with tape, grit, and emergency depth pieces. If Detroit is going to slow down Stafford and the Rams, these new faces will have to grow up fast. Sunday officially becomes a “next man up” game in every sense, and Detroit’s playoff hopes may depend on how well these new starters respond.

  • Detroit Lions Make Multiple Roster Moves Ahead of Giants Matchup

    [ad_1]

The Detroit Lions are settling in for a critical three-game homestand, and they’re doing it with a healthier roster than they’ve had in weeks. With playoff urgency creeping in, Detroit made several roster moves on Saturday, including one major return and one very underrated one.

    Let’s break it all down.

    D.J. Reed Activated — And That’s Huge

The headliner? D.J. Reed is officially back.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Dan Campbell hinted that Reed wouldn’t return until early December. Then, suddenly, boom, activated for Sunday against the Giants. The Lions already own one of the NFL’s top defenses, and now they get their CB1 back for the stretch run.

There’s been no confirmation on whether he’ll be on a pitch count, but having Reed back at all is a massive win.

Khalil Dorsey Returns — And Don’t Sleep On This One

It may not grab headlines, but Khalil Dorsey’s return might be one of the most underrated moves of the week.

Detroit’s special teams have struggled lately, and Dorsey has long been one of the league’s elite gunners. Add in the extra cornerback depth, and suddenly that entire third phase looks a whole lot more stable.

This could quietly swing field position in Detroit’s favor, something they’ve been missing.

Anthony Firkser Elevated From the Practice Squad

With Sam LaPorta out for the season following a back procedure, the Lions needed another tight end, and Anthony Firkser is the next man up.

Firkser, who spent time with Detroit in 2023, brings value as a blocker and has the versatility to line up as a fullback. Expect him to play a role in the run game, especially against a Giants defense that struggles to stop it.

Two Players Waived to Make Room

To activate Reed and Dorsey, the Lions waived:

    • LB Ty Summers
    • S Erick Hallett

Neither player saw significant snaps this season, and both are strong candidates to return to the practice squad if they clear waivers.

Detroit now heads into Sunday’s matchup against the Giants closer to full strength than they’ve been in weeks, and just in time for a pivotal stretch that could define their playoff path.

Detroit Lions Announce Pair Of Roster Moves In Advance Of Matchup Vs. Titans

    [ad_1]

Ahead of their upcoming matchup against the Tennessee Titans, the Detroit Lions have announced two roster moves. According to an official tweet from the team, the Lions have released wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith from the Reserve/Injured list and re-signed safety Erick Hallett to the practice squad.

Tre’Quan Smith, who was placed on the Reserve/Injured list earlier in the season, is now a free agent after being released by the Lions. Smith, a former New Orleans Saints receiver, was signed by the Lions to add depth to their receiving corps but was sidelined by injuries before making a significant impact.

In a corresponding move, the Lions have brought back safety Erick Hallett to their practice squad. Hallett, who has been with the Lions previously, provides added depth to the secondary and could be a valuable piece as the team faces a grueling second half of the season.

These roster adjustments come as the Lions prepare for a critical game against the Titans as they continue their strong start to the season and push for playoff contention.
