Four Hundred Next-Gen Leaders Selected to Carry Forward TFF’s Mission in 200 Cities Around the World

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 14, 2019

The Thought For Food (TFF) Foundation is expanding its global footprint with the addition of 400 Ambassadors who are tasked with multiplying the organization’s mission and impact in more than 200 cities across the globe.

The new cohort of TFF Ambassadors represents 65 countries around the world and will work closely with TFF’s Regional Coordinators as committed “boots on the ground” – helping to identify and develop strong relationships with promising talents and startups that can benefit from TFF’s entrepreneurial training and acceleration programs.

The TFF Ambassadors were chosen from a pool of nearly 2,000 applicants after going through a rigorous pre-selection process that included a four-week trial period focused on testing their practical skills, collaborative spirit and commitment to join TFF’s global community. As part of the trial period, the pre-selected TFF Ambassadors carried out over 500 grassroots activities to raise awareness about food and agriculture issues in their local communities, including farm tours, documentary screenings, discussion sessions, sustainable dinners, recording of podcasts and TV interviews.

“Becoming a TFF Ambassador is a great opportunity to create positive impact,” says Fernando Salerno, a TFF Ambassador selected from the Venezuelan capital Caracas and co-founder of Níspero, an organization which connects isolated small-scale farmers in rural areas, helps them to reach markets and supports them in regenerating depleted soils. “This role gives me the resources to expose the Venezuelan crisis and the opportunities connected to it, to work with the innovation community around me and to raise awareness about the pressing food and agricultural challenges we face here in my country.”

Despite facing severe gas, electricity and water issues in his country, Fernando and his team of TFF Ambassadors found creative and impactful ways to share the TFF story, including conducting interviews on one of the most-viewed national TV programs, as well as on a radio show focused on entrepreneurship. They also ran several workshops for small-scale produce farmers and business peers focused on community-based sustainable farming practices.

“It has been inspiring to watch the TFF Ambassadors demonstrate such passion and commitment to our cause throughout the trial period. These are a diverse group of talented leaders who are joining our global community, ready to share their experiences, expertise and local networks in supporting TFF’s mission,” stated Sujala Balaji, TFF Regional Coordinator for North America and founder of Kosha Foods, a Canadian startup for plant-based protein alternatives. “I am very excited and look forward to working with them in building stronger regional communities and collectively working towards the global challenges facing food and sustainability.”

The TFF Ambassadors will play an important role in recruiting innovative food and agriculture projects from every part of the world to join the next edition of the annual TFF Challenge on Oct. 16 (World Food Day). This year, TFF Challenge participants will gain access to the all-new TFF Digital Labs, the world’s first 21st-century learning and startup accelerator program optimized for next-gen entrepreneurs in the food and agriculture sector.

  • Venture for America, Uber and UBS Partner Together to Help 300 Women and People of Color Become Entrepreneurs by 2021

Venture for America, Uber and UBS Partner Together to Help 300 Women and People of Color Become Entrepreneurs by 2021

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 13, 2019

Venture For America (VFA), a two-year fellowship program for recent college graduates interested in entrepreneurship and working in a fast-paced, innovative startup environment, announced that it has launched a new initiative called Operation 3 to 300 that will help 300 women and people of color to launch businesses through their Fellowship by 2021. Uber and UBS have both signed on as sponsors of the initiative and have committed $1M to the effort.

Nationally, startups and the technology sector are dominated by males and skew heavily in favor of white and Asian employees. As of 2016, according to the Harvard Business Review, only 9% of venture-backed firms have female CEOs. Racial diversity statistics have been even bleaker. Data from 2010 revealed that 91% of employees in Silicon Valley tech firms were white or Asian. Only 1% percent of VC goes to black founders and only 10% of tech workers are Black or LatinX and 26% are women. Startups are the best breeding grounds for entrepreneurs. The lack of diversity among startup employees today means that the entrepreneurs of the future will continue to be largely white and male.

Venture For America, Uber and UBS are changing this. VFA’s two-year Fellowship program, which places post-grads in startups in 14 cities, is directly influencing who can become an entrepreneur in this country by lowering the barriers to entry. VFA Fellows work for two years in a startup and have access to ongoing mentorship, training, and investments, including a Seed Fund and an Accelerator program. After establishing this goal and designing the program, they set out to find strategic partners to achieve their mission. VFA is excited to announce that Uber has joined longtime partner UBS in taking a stance towards diversifying the field of entrepreneurship. This partnership will allow VFA to provide tailored trainings, support, and investment to those who have been historically marginalized in the industry.

“There are too many barriers to entrepreneurship and not enough incentives. To help someone start a business you have to invest in their idea and validate them early. Early stage support can be a game-changing catalyst for a young person starting a company. We’re incredibly excited to partner with high-powered and influential brands like Uber and UBS to directly invest in women and people of color in our program.” – Amy Nelson, CEO of Venture For America

VFA occupies a unique position in bridging the gap between skill training, job placement and investing in early-stage founders. Many organizations focus on training talent at the top of the funnel or investing in new businesses at the end of the pipeline. Few specialize in getting them jobs. By moving VFA Fellows through the pipeline and supporting them at each step, VFA is one of the only organizations that are actually able to influence who becomes an entrepreneur.

Since 2015, VFA has made recruitment of women and people from underrepresented groups a priority. As a result, the organization has already seen exciting success stories for women and people of color.

Sara Cullen, who graduated in VFA’s inaugural class of 2012, is the founder of GEM. GEM is the first real-food daily vitamin, specifically focused on female health.

Jamie Norwood and Cynthia Plotch, both 2015 Fellows, just launched the beta version of their D2C pregnancy test company, Stix. Stix aims to disrupt the buying process for pregnancy tests and provide a discreet and safe consumer experience.

Mugha Eltigani, a 2014 graduate of VFA, is the co-founder and CEO of NaturAll Club. NaturAll Club is a subscription-based avocado hair care product line. Muhga and her team were just accepted to Y Combinator’s Winter 2019 Batch where they will gain access to world-class entrepreneurs and secured a $1mm investment from Richelieu Dennis, founder of Shea Moisture. This investment adds her to the short list of black women who have raised $1M+ in funding.

Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber, has supported Venture For America through his personal philanthropy for many years. He saw the 3 to 300 campaign as a perfect way to bring Uber on board as a strategic partner.

“At the heart of entrepreneurship is the dream that innovation and hard work can level the playing field for everyone. This isn’t always true, but it should be. We are proud to partner with Venture For America, because when entrepreneurs have support to bring their passions to life, everyone benefits.” – Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO, Uber

UBS has been an integral corporate partner for Venture For America for many years and has focused their philanthropic efforts on directly supporting the organization’s resources to help their Fellows and Alumni launch dynamic new businesses.

“We collectively have the ability to shape the future of entrepreneurship now,” said Tom Naratil, President UBS Americas and Co-President UBS Global Wealth Management. “We’re proud to continue our support for VFA’s unique capabilities and commitment to directly impacting aspiring entrepreneurs, and excited to work together to create 300 new underrepresented founders over the next few years.”

As Labor Day Approaches, People With Disabilities Are Getting Jobs

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 29, 2018

As Labor Day weekend approaches, the disability community has a lot to celebrate. 343,483 more people with disabilities joined the American workforce in 2016. This is a four-fold improvement over the previous year when only 87,201 people with disabilities found jobs.

Earlier this summer, business experts with direct experience in hiring people with disabilities gathered together to talk about the dramatic improvement in new jobs for people with disabilities, what’s driving it and how we continue improving. This discussion took place during a summit, “From Washington to Hollywood and Beyond: The Future of Americans with Disabilities,” which was sponsored by RespectAbility, a national nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for people with disabilities. The event consisted of panels on education, employment, media representation, and intersectionality.

343,483 more people with disabilities joined the American workforce in 2016. This is a four-fold improvement over the previous year when only 87,201 people with disabilities found jobs.

    Donn Weinberg, Philanthropy Roundtable Chair

Moderated by Donn Weinberg, who chairs the Philanthropy Roundtable, the panelists came from diverse areas of the business world, including Jim Sinocchi of JP Morgan Chase, Ron Painter from the National Association of Workforce Boards, and Vincenzo Piscopo of Coca-Cola.

Piscopo was asked about why he feels that hiring people with disabilities is not just a charitable thing to do, but also the smart thing to do for business. He responded by saying that since becoming immersed in the disability community eight years ago, he has “met amazing people with disabilities with skills that are just incredible.” Piscopo also spoke about how people with disabilities are used to persevering and overcoming challenges, two traits of great employees. Piscopo believes that “when companies hire people with disabilities, they are actually adding value to their company.”

One key concept that resounded through the panel was the concept of normalizing disability. Jim Sinocchi of JP Morgan Chase talked about some of his strategies in navigating disability in the workplace. For example, he said that when employees ask him what to say when they meet people with disabilities, he answers, “How about hello? How about, would you like a cup of coffee?”

Sinocchi feels that some employees are afraid of making mistakes, and the best way to rectify that is for people with disabilities to “own [their] disability.” Sinocchi said that people with disabilities should try to help their colleagues understand what they need, what they want and how they can collaborate.

Piscopo talked about the steps that Coca-Cola is taking to expand inclusion. When Piscopo sees people with disabilities “that are extremely brilliant” who are not being used to their potential, he feels they have “value that has been thrown to the garbage.”

“Why don’t we take advantage of that?” he said. He also talked about how he is working with senior management to show them the skills that people with disabilities bring to the table.

Ron Painter talked about an increased focus on credentials and competence in the hiring process, which means there is a “tremendous opportunity for individuals [with disabilities] to first demonstrate competency and then the rest of the individual.” Painter also believes that automation has “tremendous potential” to level the playing field.

On the subject of equity in hiring practices, Sinocchi was clear about his position on preferential hiring. “The disabled community sometimes goes to our recruiters and says, ‘okay, what jobs do you have for disabled people?’ And we say, ‘we don’t have any.’ We have jobs for qualified people.”

Sinocchi argued that some people with disabilities are more qualified for certain positions than people without disabilities. For example, some people on the autism spectrum are better at focusing on coding, so Sinocchi said that “when we have people on the [autism] spectrum that are available to work in our technology group, they are snapped up immediately.”

One audience member wanted to know about the changing workplace culture, and another asked about tips for people with disabilities seeking employment. Painter recommended American Job Centers, which assist many Americans with and without disabilities in finding employment. Sinocchi noted how he works with his company to make sure they hire services from businesses run by people with disabilities.

“My firm is ripe for change,” he said.

The panelists also were asked about the possibilities for entrepreneurship by and for people with disabilities. Painter was enthusiastic about the question, saying there are “a lot of workforce boards across the U.S. that are investing in entrepreneurship training.”

Weinberg brought up John’s Crazy Socks, a business run by a man with Down syndrome and his father that is a major success.

The panel closed with an optimistic statement from RespectAbility President Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, who affirmed RespectAbility’s commitment to working with companies to improve employment opportunities for all.

A high-level conference and interactive exhibit, “(Zero Gravity) 0G Summit – Space Diplomacy in the Age of NewSpace” announced today its mission to make Space the New Frontier for Peace during the prestigious 2017 Concordia Annual Summit, on the sidelines of the General Debate of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Namira Salim, co-chaired 0G Summit, her brainchild, which is the lead initiative of her non-profit, nonpartisan organization, Space Trust. The event was co-chaired, moderated and hosted by Dr. Lance Bush, President & CEO of Challenger Center. “This year’s 0G Summit dialogue reinforced the importance of the space industry and the benefits it offers to citizens around the globe,” said Dr. Lance Bush. “To ensure the industry continues to innovate at a high level, it is critical that we all work to inspire today’s students to pursue space and other STEM-related careers.”

Namira is internationally renowned as the first (future) Space Tourist from South Asia, Middle East and Monaco to go to space aboard Virgin Galactic—the first private space-line of the world. Sir Richard Branson, Chairman Virgin Group, personally introduced Namira to the world press in Dubai in 2006, as one of the earliest Founders of Virgin Galactic. “As spacefaring and new space nations expand cooperation via human and robotic missions, the world is on the verge of ushering Space ‘Shuttle’ Diplomacy,” said Namira Salim. “So, why not open space to world leaders and politicians to utilize the orbit for sustainable peacemaking and conflict resolution on earth?”

Distinguished speakers included H.E. Laura Chinchilla, former President of Costa Rica; H.E. Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera, former President of Uruguay; Sherri Goodman, Former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense and Dr. Dava Newman, Former Deputy Administrator of NASA who applauded the 0G Summit thought leadership, which advocates space as an innovative solution for a peaceful world—to inject innovation and inspiration into the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda. “I am looking forward to 0G Summit’s thought leadership for the future of global, peaceful space exploration, for all of humanity,” said Dr. Dava Newman, Former Deputy Administrator NASA. “We are pleased to host the 0G Summit during the 2017 Concordia Annual Summit to enable effective partnerships for positive social impact and to transform the way global leaders approach the world’s greatest challenges,” said Matt Swift, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of Concordia.

The event made a strong case for the first peace summit in space in 2030 and unveiled an Interactive APP showing the assembly of a private space station in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and launch of the 0G Summit into orbit, which mystified the audience via large LCD screens. Giant space images on exhibit came alive into 3D Augmented Reality APPs to provide an immersive experience into the space environment. Furthermore, the event spotlighted a high-level roundtable discussion, which presented a cross-sector collaboration between peacemakers, space industry pioneers, space investors, space diplomacy, foreign policy and space law experts to foster a meaningful dialogue and advocate the First Peace Summit in Space by 2030. 0G Summit 2030 is being observed by United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and was presented this past February in Vienna at the 54th Session of the Scientific and Technical Sub-Committee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

Current and former Heads of State at the broader Concordia Summit included Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; José María Aznar, former Prime Minister of Spain; Aleksander Kwaśniewski, former President of the Republic of Poland; Rosen Asenov Plevneliev, former President of Republic of Bulgaria; Danilo Türk, former President of the Republic of Slovenia; Álvaro Uribe Vélez, former President of the Republic of Colombia; Boris Tadić, former President of the Republic of Serbia; Dr. Fuad Masum, President of the Republic of Iraq; Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana; George Papandreou, former Prime Minister of Greece; Zlatko (Salko) Lagumdžija, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, amongst other eminent personalities.

Past 0G Summits have featured Congressman Jim Bridenstine, Representative of Oklahoma’s First Congressional District and recently nominated by President Trump as the next NASA Administrator and Ms. Simonetta Di Pippo, Director United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

The (Zero Gravity) 0G Summit, has been advocating the first peace summit in orbit by 2030. The International Space Station has become a beacon for international cooperation in space—where future commercial space stations in orbit by the mid-2020s could serve as a concrete platform for convenings in zero gravity.
