    Judge’s 61st home run ball was fumbled by fans and eventually ended up in the Blue Jays bullpen. From there, it was picked up by a coach for the Blue Jays and subsequently returned to the Yankees.

    Had this ball been caught by a fan, experts estimate that this piece of history could have garnered more than $250,000 at auction.

    As you might imagine, Judge’s 62nd ball, which broke Maris’ record, could potentially be sold for millions.

    The life of an entrepreneur can be a rollercoaster. After closing my first 7-figure business during the 2007–2008 Global Financial Crisis, I made sure that my future businesses were resilient. As much as this “crash” was a crisis, it was also the opportunity to create the life I really wanted. I had let my business take over for my needs. I am thankful for the lessons learned, and I use that experience not only in my own businesses but also as a business mentor when I am helping clients create resilient businesses that support their needs and desires.

    To be successful, you need grit, passion and faith in the value of what you are doing. People think that going into business will give them the freedom to do whatever they want, but if you’re not careful, the business can take over your life. There is always a lot of testing and measuring, and not everything turns to gold straight away. Consistent and persistent action to keep going, even when things haven’t gone to plan, is needed.

    Being persistent is different from just working hard. Take time to get clear, get in alignment and follow the path from a place of clarity. When things don’t go to plan, you need to be agile and open to change to suit the current operating environment. Celebrate the highs, and enjoy the journey — that is the sweet spot, even more than the end goal. In all my businesses, I align to follow the joy. When you enjoy what you do every day and are bringing value to others, that is when you are living the dream! Here are five key tips to successfully ride the rollercoaster of being an entrepreneur:

    1. Good foundations

    This is systems and structures, but more importantly, this includes knowing how to support yourself, building a good support team around you and utilizing them by asking for help when you need it.

    This was a big lesson for me in my first business. The African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” comes to mind. You might be able to do all of the things in your business, but if you want to scale, you need to bring in team members. In order to bring in a team, you need systems and procedures. I remember returning from a business trip when I was about 6 months pregnant, and I was chatting with the person sitting next to me on the flight. We were talking about my travel business and how I would manage once I had the baby. She encouraged me to read The E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber, which emphasizes that if you want a successful business, rather than just creating a job, you need the business to work without you. If you want to grow and scale, just like any building, you need strong foundations.

    2. Emotional intelligence

    Emotional intelligence is being able to be an observer of your emotions and understand why you might be experiencing them, and use them to guide you to what you need to do next. Knowing how to support your own emotional needs is one of the keys to a happy life.

    People think that “business” and “personal’ are separate aspects of our career paths, and yes, sometimes they are — but a “light-bulb” moment for me was realizing that this is never entirely true. Everything is personal because we are human beings. It was a big shake-up during my business closure (I was also going through a divorce at the time). I realized that there is strength within vulnerability. It’s okay to admit that you are not okay, and it’s okay to ask for help. It’s also okay to say “I need time away” or to say “no” to things that drain your energy. The realization was that I needed to trust myself and let go of fears around emotions, make decisions with an open heart, be guided by my intuition and prioritize my own needs.

    3. Empathy

    Empathy is being able to consider someone else’s perspective, how they are feeling and why they may be acting a certain way. Understanding this will be a great tool for you in resolving issues and in any negotiations.

    Developing a greater understanding of the role empathy plays in your working life will help with managing teams and growing your business. As a negotiating tool, I always look for what’s in it for the other side as well as how and why they may have formed their point of view. It will help you determine what their expectations are and help you curate an offer that will be acceptable. It helps to establish long-term mutually beneficial relationships. It’s not always about an immediate win or two opposing sides. It can be how you work through challenges and support each other in a common goal.

    Here’s an example from one of my own businesses, The Bubbles Review, which publishes articles and creates events and tours on and sparkling wine. When we went into lockdown for the pandemic, the events and sparkling wine industries were severely affected. Restaurants were closed, and wineries needed to close their cellar doors. I had to postpone our series of The Bubbles Festivals indefinitely. Understanding how difficult this was, I wanted to do something to help.

    We host a section on our website where we feature reviews on Sparkling Cellar Doors, so I decided to create a Virtual Sparkling Cellar Doors listing to feature wineries and wine importers who had suddenly lost their usual distribution channels. I made it free for them to participate because it was more about giving back and helping. We promoted it to our database and social media, and I showcased virtual tastings, interviewed some of the winemakers and shared them on our page. The relationships that were formed during this time have been long-lasting. When it was time to invite wineries and wine importers to be exhibitors for our events in 2021, it was an easy “yes” for them to sign up, as we had already negotiated to a point of trust in our shared goal of promoting these lovely sparkling wines to our audience.

    4. Manage your energy

    One of the most important resources is your own energy. Knowing how to read your own energy, and that of others is crucial. Failure to do so will lead to burnout. If you are experiencing resistance, reset and restore your energy until you can move forward from a place of inspiration.

    I didn’t always get this right, and once I had reached burnout, it was very hard to restore my energy from there. In some cases, it can take years. I now protect my energy daily. I listen to my body. I schedule regular wellness activities and take time out when I need to. I choose what and who I spend time with based on what brings me joy. I don’t take on projects or clients that do not align with who I am or what I want to do.

    5. Know your value

    This can be achieved by aligning to your value set and operating from there. When you operate from a place of value, you eliminate self-doubt and align with your sense of purpose — and you’re less likely to be affected by any negativity.

    Aligning with your values is also a useful way to restore energy. In my first business, it was a big transition from simply managing myself to needing to motivate my entire team. This topic is now one of the most popular workshops that I deliver for small and large organizations, as it allows you to create a company culture that all of your staff will engage with. You will find all of your team on the same page instead of top-down instructing, and you will have all of your staff working as a team to achieve your shared goals.

    Customers will align with businesses that have similar values to them. For you, personally, when you are working on things and working with people who align with your values, this is when it feels like you are following your joy. Our businesses should work for us, not the other way around. My biggest takeaway is to not put off living your dream life and wait for something to happen in the future. It really is about enjoying each of the steps along the way. When the business becomes stressful, remind yourself that business and life are supposed to be fun.

    ​​Starting a business can be an arduous task for the average person, but for someone carrying student loan debt, it may feel impossible. A borrower with $30,000 in student loans is 11 percent less likely to start a business than someone who was able to graduate debt free, according to Karthik Krishnan, an associate professor of finance at Northeastern University. The average graduate from the class of 2017 walked away with $37,172 in debt — and that extra $7,000 is certain to reduce the chances of entrepreneurship even further. American Financial Benefits Center (AFBC), a document preparation company, believes that entrepreneurship is important for an economy to flourish and shouldn’t be held back by student loan debt.

    “Starting a business takes time, resources, and money,” said Sara Molina, Manager at AFBC. “If someone is working two jobs to pay off debt, they have no time. Their resources are already limited by their debt. And most likely most of their money is going to their debt and the necessities.”

    Borrowers who are working on paying off their loans may not have the capital to invest in a business and may have a significantly harder time getting a business loan from a financial institution. With half of small businesses failing by their fifth year, many would-be entrepreneurs with debt may be less likely to take on the risk of a new business, as well. Small business owners are the ones hit particularly hard by student loan debt, according to a study by researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania State. While that may make the problem sound less significant, it’s actually an important distinction; small businesses are one of the top sources of employment in the United States, not to mention most business start-ups tend to start small. Researchers found that the number of small businesses with one to four employees dropped 14 percent between 2000 and 2010 and warn that this trend of fewer small business startups could have an extensive impact on the economy as a whole.

    Student loan borrowers who are interested in starting their own business, but who don’t feel they have the ability to do so, may benefit from applying for an income-driven repayment plan (IDR). An IDR takes into account a borrower’s family size and discretionary income and can potentially offer significantly lower monthly payments. After 20 to 25 years of qualifying payments, the debt may end in the forgiveness of any remaining federal student debt.

    “Small businesses are so important for the local economy,” said Molina. “Their impact creates a ripple effect into the national economy. It’s essential that people who have the drive to start a business are able to get their dream off the ground. We truly believe IDRs can offer entrepreneurs some much-needed assistance.”

    As I wrote about earlier this week, Ideas Island is an island run by Swedish creativity speaker Fredrik Haren where he invites people working on ideas to come stay for free. Guests come from all over the world, work in a diverse set of professions and pursue a variety of projects. As happened to me, many of them arrive with one intention but then find the island takes over. Here is a smattering of their experiences.

    Professions: freelance advertising creatives, No to Normal

    Project: A children’s book

    Sam: It was very much a stab-in-the-dark, crazy thing to do. It seems kind of unbelievable, too good to be true that someone would let you go to this island, theoretically for free but giving the money to charity. Because the info they provided was very sparse — we got a PDF with some pictures and a map and a photo of what the boat looks like and the pin for the padlock — it aroused feelings of adventure, of being a child again and going off into the unknown. We made good friends with the neighbors living across the water and had a lot of drunken dinners and then we would have to row the boat back over at 1 or 2am.

    James: For us it was less important that we produce an enormous amount of work and more important that we had time to envisage future projects. I’m a collage artist, but I didn’t bring all the materials I would need to make collages — magazines, scissors and glue — but I did come back with an abundance of ideas as to how I may take certain ideas forward.

    Sam, on how ideas came up: It was the stillness, the emptiness of there being no other stimulus or shroud of crap you have to do day to day hanging over creativity. You don’t have all the mod-cons that you gathered growing into adulthood, whether physical, mental, or things you worry about like email, bills.

    It’s a bit like being given a blank canvas at first. It can be a bit daunting. All of a sudden, we had all this time. You’re always like, I wish I had time to do this, or I wish I had time do that, but when you’re given the time, you’re a little stunted almost by the vastness of it.

    We explored, we hunted, fished, [chopped logs], and ate almost everything cooked on the fire on the beach and swam every day and played like children. I was there with two police officers, one of whom was really very quite high up. By day two, we had reverted to kids. We had long conversations about work and about how we should be more playful and say, ‘I’m not going to work today. I’m going to sit here and enjoy the view or spend time with my friends.’ Just being away from all those things that take your attention away made us realize what was important — spending time with your friends and actually listening what they’re saying, not checking your phone or having to rush off anywhere. When I first went to the island, I thought I should be doing work 10 hours a day, and then I quite quickly chose not to and to enjoy the island for what it could be. I worked for four hours, but it still felt good enough to stop. Afterwards, it became quite clear from past guests and from Sofia that that’s Frederick’s plan: you go there to work and the island takes over.

    Two of the girls live in Scotland, in Dundee, and I’ve been living in cities for the past 10 years, so we got a bit feral. We were chopping down trees and fishing and at one point, accidentally, one of the girls was fishing, and the duck swallowed the hook. We tried to rescue it, but we couldn’t. We said we can’t just cut this duck loose and leave it to die, so we killed and cooked it. But we were traumatized we accidentally hooked the duck and felt really guilty. I ran away. The other two quickly hammered it, plucked it, hung it upside down and properly butchered it, and one of the girls had hunted with her dad so she knew how to prepare it and we cooked it on a griddle over the campfire. I remember the other girls that were not part of killing it at first were like, oh no, we don’t want it, but then we realized that was ridiculous. If we can’t eat something that we know exactly where comes from … and yeah, it was the best duck we’d ever eaten.

    I teach this course for online leadership for 120 young people. While I was there I decided to write a module which boiled down everything I was learning on the island such as the science behind having your best ideas when you let your brain relax — like how you have your best ideas in the shower. When you stop thinking about what you’re supposed to think, your neurons meet up and get great ideas, and that’s what I found on the island. I wasn’t pushing myself. I was so distracted doing all these other things I really liked, that by the time I got up the next day, all these ideas were pouring out.

    When I put the module out, I was worried about what kind of response this would get, because my students come from all over the world — 70 different cultures and backgrounds and opinions about things — and I thought either they’re going to really gonna love this or they’re going to think, ‘She’s crack. She went to the island and has come back a massive hippie.’ But it has turned out to be the most popular module we’ve done in the whole course this year with the most assignment hand-ins. We called the module The Island.

    When are you ever in situations where no one’s looking at you? We noticed that really quickly that we lost constructs that we live in — like, that we are professional women — and we found as the week went on, they just fell away. One girl said, I’m going to go topless a little bit so I don’t get sunbathing straps, and we said, okay, all of us. Then she said, I’m just going to bathe in this thong, and we were like, yup, us too. And by the end, we were basically naked the whole time.

    When you’re there, you’re more calm. Time is super slow and you have all the time in the world to flesh it out. It’s more productive because there are no distractions. You can’t go to the mall or anything. We didn’t leave the island for seven days. We got food for the whole stay and just stayed there.

    It was a peaceful and worry-free time, which is really important when you’re trying to create something or trying to think of new ideas just to have the time and space to just be. The first few days, I was like, I should come up with something now — that kind of pressure — but after a few days, you feel more at ease with it and then I realized I could just sit here and let it come to me.

    I thought seven days sounded like a long time. I thought I would be bored or have a lot of idle time. … But it’s the perfect time for becoming, for taking the time to develop.

    We didn’t have generated electricity, we had solar panels, so you [wake] up when the sun goes up and you go to sleep when the sun goes down. Even when you wake at 6am, you feel completely rested. It makes you calmer. So you work in a completely different rhythm. I could focus on work and then relax and do something I really love, like snorkeling. After a couple days, you completely lose track of time. You’re there to finish this task and you work when you want to work. 

    You don’t have to go to Ideas Island to experience the feeling. You have to make time in your calendar and have no obligations to anyone else.

    It was like food for the mind. There are no distractions. The first days, I was really tired from my job. I just relaxed and started to enjoy the place. I read a lot, enjoyed the island, swam, played some guitar and took a lot of photos. To record, I needed to use the computer and I didn’t want to come back to technology immediately. On the third day. I was more relaxed. I connected the cable and started to record without thinking about it, so I was ready.

    Ninety percent of the work was the island because it’s impossible to do something well if you must do it, if you can’t take your time. I wasn’t worried about [anything]. I forgot where I was, where I came from.

    The island’s tranquility and peace came at the right time for me to reflect on all the things I was trying to get out of my trip. It gave me time for reflection — I was trying to connect with nature, so I built a small pathway that led down from the bottom end of the island to the bay. I spent days there in the trees, working on that and getting in touch with nature and working with Mother Earth, which was really quite spiritual in a sense. There were days I paddled the boat out to the middle of the lake and sat there watched the sunrise and sunsets and had those experiences alone that a lot of people dream about but never get to have.

    I applied to work on my startup and writing, but when I finally got there, I mostly did drawing. It’s easy to go there with the mindset that now I’m really going to get stuff done but it’s also really easy to procrastinate. But I was happy that in my procrastination, I did something that was also creative and productive, which was drawing. When I was a kid, I loved drawing and I thought that I would become a cartoonist, but that never happened.

    You almost never get that kind of seclusion, and you feel a kind of calm that you don’t experience if you are still at your home or office or studio, because you’re completely left alone and undisturbed. Some friends came by with their boat and one evening, some people living nearby had caught so much fish and they asked if I wanted some spare fish for dinner. That was very nice, but other than that, it was a rare opportunity to be left alone, not be alone, but left alone — and not have other trivial stuff from your everyday life sneak up and bother you.
