  • Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Giant and Star of Landmark Film ‘The Harder They Come,’ Dead at 81

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — Jimmy Cliff, the charismatic reggae pioneer and actor who preached joy, defiance and resilience in such classics as “Many Rivers to Cross,” “You Can Get it If You Really Want” and “Vietnam” and starred in the landmark movie “The Harder They Come,” has died at 81.

His family posted a message Monday on his social media sites that he died from a “seizure followed by pneumonia.” Additional information was not immediately available.

“”To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career,” the announcement reads in part. “He really appreciated each and every fan for their love.”

Cliff was a native Jamaican with a spirited tenor and a gift for catchphrases and topical lyrics who joined Kingston’s emerging music scene in his teens and helped lead a movement in the 1960s that included such future stars as Bob Marley, Toots Hibbert and Peter Tosh. By the early 1970s, he had accepted director Perry Henzell’s offer to star in a film about an aspiring reggae musician, Ivanhoe “Ivan” Martin, who turns to crime when his career stalls. Henzell named the movie “The Harder They Come” after suggesting the title as a possible song for Cliff.

“Ivanhoe was a real-life character for Jamaicans,” Cliff told Variety in 2022, upon the film’s 50th anniversary. “When I was a little boy, I used to hear about him as being a bad man. A real bad man. No one in Jamaica, at that time, had guns. But he had guns and shot a policeman, so he was someone to be feared. However, being a hero was the manner in which Perry wanted to make his name — an anti-hero in the way that Hollywood turns its bad guys into heroes.”

“The Harder They Come,” delayed for some two years because of sporadic funding, was the first major commercial release to come out of Jamaica. It sold few tickets in its initial run, despite praise from Roger Ebert and other critics. But it now stands as a cultural touchstone, with a soundtrack widely cited as among the greatest ever and as a turning point in reggae’s worldwide rise.

For a brief time, Cliff rivaled Marley as the genre’s most prominent artist. On an album that included Toots and the Maytals, the Slickers and Desmond Dekker, Cliff was the featured artist on four out of 11 songs, all well placed in the reggae canon.

“Sitting in Limbo” was a moody, but hopeful take on a life in restless motion. “You Can Get it If You Really Want” and the title song were calls for action and vows of final payments: “The harder they come, the harder they fall, one and all.” Cliff otherwise lets out a weary cry on “Many Rivers to Cross,” a gospel-style testament that he wrote after confronting racism in England in the 1960s.

“It was a very frustrating time. I came to England with very big hopes, and I saw my hopes fading,” he told Rolling Stone in 2012.

Cliff’s career peaked with “The Harder They Come,” but, after a break in the late 1970s, he worked steadily for decades, whether session work with the Rolling Stones or collaborations with Wyclef Jean, Sting and Annie Lennox among others. Meanwhile, his early music lived on. The Sandinistas in Nicaragua used “You Can Get it If You Really Want” as a campaign theme and Bruce Springsteen helped expand Cliff’s U.S. audience with his live cover of the reggae star’s “Trapped,” featured on the million-selling charity album from 1985, “We Are the World.” Others performing his songs included John Lennon, Cher and UB40.

Cliff was nominated for seven Grammys and won twice for best reggae album: in 1986 for “Cliff Hanger” and in 2012 for the well-named “Rebirth,” widely regarded as his best work in years. His other albums included the Grammy-nominated “The Power and the Glory,” “Humanitarian” and the 2022 release “Refugees.” He also performed on Steve Van Zandt’s protest anthem, “Sun City,” and acted in the Robin Williams comedy “Club Paradise,” for which he contributed a handful of songs to the soundtrack and sang with Elvis Costello on the rocker “Seven Day Weekend.”

In 2010, Cliff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He was born James Chambers in suburban Saint James and, like Ivan Martin in “The Harder They Come,” moved to Kingston in his youth to become a musician. In the early 1960s, Jamaica was gaining its independence from Britain and the early sounds of reggae — first called ska and rocksteady — were catching on. Calling himself Jimmy Cliff, he had a handful of local hits, including “King of Kings” and “Miss Jamaica,” and, after overcoming the kinds of barriers that upended Martin, was called on to help represent his country at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City.

“(Reggae) is a pure music. It was born of the poorer class of people,” he told Spin in 2022. “It came from the need for recognition, identity and respect.”

His popularity grew over the second half of the 1960s, and he signed with Island Records, the world’s leading reggae label. Island founder Chris Blackwell tried in vain to market him to rock audiences, but Cliff still managed to reach new listeners. He had a hit with a cover of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World,” and reached the top 10 in the UK with the uplifting “Wonderful World, Beautiful People.” Cliff’s widely heard protest chant, “Vietnam,” was inspired in part by a friend who had served in the war and returned damaged beyond recognition.

His success as a recording artist and concert performer led Henzell to seek a meeting with him and flatter him into accepting the part: “You know, I think you’re a better actor than singer,” Cliff remembered him saying. Aware that “The Harder They Come” could be a breakthrough for Jamaican cinema, he openly wished for stardom, although Cliff remained surprised by how well known he became.

“Back in those days there were few of us African descendants who came through the cracks to get any kind of recognition,′ he told The Guardian in 2021. “It was easier in music than movies. But when you start to see your face and name on the side of the buses in London that was like: ‘Wow, what’s going on?’”

As the Dallas Cowboys play their first home game since the tragic death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, his pregnant girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, is in attendance.

Mancera was shown taking in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, November 23, at AT&T Stadium.

Before the rival matchup, the Cowboys showed a short tribute video, highlighting Kneeland’s career with the Cowboys, and held a moment of silence for the fans in attendance. The team also put a framed No. 94 Kneeland jersey on the bench in his honor.

Cowboys players are also wearing player-designed No. 94 helmet decals for the rest of the season.

Kneeland died by suicide on November 6 after a brief police chase. He was 24 years old.

“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the Cowboys wrote in a statement at the time, confirming the young athlete’s death. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

On November 10, Mancera broke her silence just four days after the NFL star’s sudden death.

“I’m grieving hard right now,” Mancera told the Daily Mail. “It will be a long time before I’ll feel ready to talk at any length.”

Mancera, 22, reportedly talked to police the night before Kneeland’s death, expressing concern over Kneeland’s well-being and telling authorities Kneeland had “a history of mental illness.”

According to an ESPN report from Saturday, November 23, some of Kneeland’s friends and coaches have reached out to authorities in the past with similar concerns, dating back to 2020.

Just hours before Kneeland’s death on November 6, Cowboys’ director of security, Cable Johnson, also called police requesting a welfare check.

Johnson told authorities Kneeland had sent goodbye texts to friends and family and expressed he was “not able to go to prison or to jail.”

On November 12, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced the creation of the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund and revealed that Mancera is pregnant.

The fund will financially assist Mancera amid her pregnancy.

“I’d like to take a few moments and offer my condolences to Marshawn’s family, Catalina, his girlfriend,” Schottenheimer said. “We had an opportunity last night to celebrate Marshawn’s life, tell some stories. Share, laugh, cry. Marshawn loved the words ‘one love.’ So we talked a lot about love, as we grieve. I got a chance to share a couple of the things that I’ll miss the most about Marshawn.”

He continued, “My heart is heavy, my team’s heart is heavy. We don’t move on, but we do move forward.”

Kneeland’s cousin, Nicole Kneeland-Woods, told the Daily Mail that he had been with Mancera since their days at Western Michigan.

“Marshawn shared a very special relationship with Catalina, whom he had been with since his sophomore year of college,” she said. “They supported each other through many stages of life. Catalina is an important part of our family and she’s hurting deeply too.”

On Thursday, November 14, Cowboys players spoke to the media, including defensive end Solomon Thomas, whose sister Ella died by suicide in 2018.

“Marshawn was in the building, smiling every day,” Thomas, 30, said. “He was happy, he was listening to music, he was dancing all the time. But that’s the thing with mental health and suicide. • Bobby Bones Addresses ‘Minor Meltdown’ Over Tom Bergeron’s DWTS Comments

    [ad_1]

Bobby Bones is reflecting on his back-and-forth with Tom Bergeron, which resulted in him deciding to return his coveted Dancing With the Stars trophy.

“I had a minor meltdown about a week and a half ago because [of] Tom Bergeron, who I love [and] still love,” Bones, 45, said on the Saturday, November 22, episode of his “Bobbycast” podcast. “I was surprised by his reaction to the question who’s one of the most surprising eliminations. They didn’t even ask him about me.”

Bergeron, 70, recently told Parade that he was shocked to see Bones win season 27 despite never topping the DWTS leaderboard.

“I have total awareness of my entire situation,” Bones said on Saturday. “It hurt my feelings so much. I have a job where I give opinions all the time. Whenever I create controversy, which I do at times, … I’m good because I signed up for this.”

Bobby Bones still isn’t sure how he won Dancing With the Stars season 27 — but he might have “cheated.” Bones — who took home the mirrorball trophy in 2018 with pro partner Sharna Burgess — looked back on his “weird” experience in the ballroom during the Monday, September 15, episode of Jason Tartick‘s “Trading […]

According to Bones, he was hurt by Bergeron’s comments because of their past interactions on DWTS.

“That was somebody [who] was so helpful to me during the show ‘cause he knew I was struggling,” the radio host said. “I still love Tom, but that hurt my feelings.”

As a result of the drama, Bones publicly revealed he planned to return his mirrorball trophy back to ABC.

“I was made to feel I was really bad at dancing, which I was, [but] then I got to be OK,” Bones said, noting he does regret returning the trophy. “Someone has reached out to me from the network, and they said they would give it back. It’s whatever I want.”

Bones, meanwhile, has yet to decide whether to accept the returned mirrorball.

“It’s not just about Tom, [but] it’s the association sometimes. I look at that and that’s the only thing I’ver ever done where I purposefully just tried hard, worked hard, tried to make people better around me,” he recalled. “I would help other contestants [during] their camera time. … I did everything I could to help, and then for people to go, ‘We think you’re less than,’ that was my association with the trophy.”

Bones continued, “There are things where [I understand] people don’t like me because I say this or feel this way, I signed up for that. This is the only thing where I was the underdog who won, and then that’s held against me. That association kind of soared it a bit.”

Bones further revealed that he never had any “intention of going on” DWTS in the first place, but was approached with the opportunity as a way to promote his role on ABC’s American Idol.

“I remember saying, ‘I’ve never danced, that sounds fun, but I don’t plan to last four weeks,’” he said. “I don’t do anything without going as hard as I can. [ad_1]

Chris Paul’s wife, Jada, has been by his side since the start of his basketball career — and now she gets to see how it ends.

After the NBA star teased his retirement from basketball on Saturday, November 21, tying the bow on an illustrious 21-year career, Jada was quick to post a congratulatory message for her high school sweetheart.

Jada, a fashion designer and entrepreneur, reposted Chris’s retirement announcement video on her Instagram story, posting a supportive message along with it.

“Helluva career! Helluva ride! So proud of you,” Jada posted via her Instagram story.

Jada and Chris met when Chris was a junior in high school and Jada was a senior.

Jada explained in a 2014 interview with xoNecole that a mutual friend set them up. The two finished high school and went to Wake Forest University together before Chris was drafted into the NBA in 2005 after his sophomore year of college.

“We met in high school. I’m a year older than him, so in high school it wasn’t cool to be a senior dating a junior,” Jada said in an interview with xoNecole in 2014.

The couple stayed together throughout college and tied the knot in September 2011 in North Carolina. Chris was already in the seventh year of his NBA career at that time.

Other NBA stars attended the wedding as well, including LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. Comedian Kevin Hart was also at the star-studded ceremony.

“Our relationship has been a progression,” Jada told Essence magazine at the time. “I feel safe with Chris. He’s very protective.”

They co-founded the CP3 Foundation in 2005 in partnership with The Winston-Salem Foundation with the goal of making a positive impact “by focusing on education, health & wellness, and leadership. The foundation provides resources that enrich and strengthen the healthy development of strong communities.”

Chris has been very supportive of his wife throughout the years, sharing with People in a 2022 interview that praising the women in his life is very important to him.

“I think that’s why I’m blessed to have the strong mother I was raised by, but then also have an amazing wife and have the opportunity to raise two amazing kids,” he said.

Soon after he was drafted in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft, Chris made his presence felt in the league. He earned the Rookie of the Year Award after his first season with the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans).

He spent the first six seasons of his career in New Orleans before he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he spent the next seven years.

He was traded to the Houston Rockets in 2017, then to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019. In 2020, he joined the Phoenix Suns.

The 12-time NBA All Star bounced around to a few teams in recent years, signing back with the Clippers over the summer where he will finish his career.

Often regarded as one of the greatest point cards of all time, he led the NBA in assists five times in his career and led the league in steals a record six times. He also earned two Olympic gold medals with Team USA.

  • Everything to Know About Wicked: For Good: Release Date and More

    [ad_1]

    Universal Pictures

Wicked changed Us for good, and the second half is sure to do the same.

The first of the two-part Wicked movie adaptation, released in November 2024, brought the beloved Broadway show to life on the big screen. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, the story chronicled the backstory of the two witches prior to the events of The Wizard of Oz.

The film followed the story of the musical’s first act, setting up part two — titled Wicked: For Good — to tell the second act’s events.

Erivo previously opened up about why the adaptation was split into two parts. “What’s wonderful about the show is that you get an insight into why this woman becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, but you have only three hours to do it in,” she told Entertainment Weekly in February 2024. “With us, you have two movies.”

Wicked ended with Elphaba being tricked by The Wizard and Madame Morrible into using the Grimmerie to create the flying monkeys in hopes of using them as spies against the animals of Oz. She and Glinda escape their clutches before emotionally agreeing to part ways. In the film’s closing moments, Elphaba shows off her power in the show-stopping musical number “Defying Gravity” before fleeing the Emerald City on her enchanted broom.

Following the act two plot of Wicked, the sequel will pick up a few years after the events of the first film. Now viewed by Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba continues her plans to help the land’s animals while Glinda rises to power as The Wizard’s new spokesperson.

As Wicked fans know, the story of act two lines up with the events of The Wizard of Oz and ends where the first film began with Glinda’s song “No One Mourns the Wicked.”

He continued: “There’s new stuff that I think the fans will enjoy. But our hope and intention is that the people to whom the story and the show are important will not in any way be disappointed, but will be thrilled by what they will see and the new stuff that’s been added and the way film is used.”

“It’ll be different from the first one,” Chu teased while exclusively chatting with Us Weekly at the Gold House 4th Annual Gold Gala in May 2025. “You know, we got two new songs. These girls … it’s about consequences, not just choices. There’s some bangers in there. A little ‘No Good Deed,’ a little ‘For Good,’ OK?”

Chu went on to state that he thinks fans are “gonna be really happy” when fans get to see Erivo, Grande and the rest of the cast perform the beloved songs from the musical’s second act.

Will Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth Have Cameos in ‘Wicked: For Good’?

Chenoweth and Menzel, stars of the original production of Wicked on Broadway, made brief cameos in the first movie, but fans are still waiting to find out whether they’ll appear in For Good too. At the Tony Awards in June 2025, Chenoweth offered a few hints about whether she and Menzel will be back … but didn’t give a definitive answer.

“I think Idina and I had our moment, and it was a beautiful moment,” she told E! News on the red carpet. “But you know what? It’s their wand and their broom.”

In a separate interview with People that same month, however, Chenoweth played a little more coy, telling the outlet, “All I can say to the fans is they’ll just have to go and see.”

Cynthia Erivo Says Goodbye to Elphaba

Following the release of Wicked: For Good, Erivo paid tribute to her character in a heartfelt social media post.

“I could write you an essay, a poem, Shakespearean prose, to describe what this journey has meant to me, what lessons this time has taught me, bought me,” the actress wrote via Instagram in November 2025 alongside several behind the scenes shots from the set of Wicked. “I could try to give a metric to the love I have felt and experienced. I could give a number to the stories I have heard. The truth is the numbers are too small and the words are not enough.”

Erivo continued, “So I’ll simply say this. Take my hand and walk with me to the end of this road paved with gold and hopefully, the things that I’ve found, might find you too. Thank you for letting me be your Elphaba.”

Grande also said goodbye to her character, Glinda, at the time, sharing photos via Instagram and writing, “Thank you, my sweet Glinda, for everything. I will love you always.”

    [ad_1]

GENEVA (AP) — Organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest announced plans to change the voting system of the popular musical extravaganza to ensure fairness, a move that follows allegations of “interference” by Israel’s government.

The European Broadcasting Union, a Geneva-based union of public broadcasters that runs the event, said Friday that the changes were “designed to strengthen trust, transparency and audience engagement.”

Israel has competed in Eurovision for more than 50 years and won four times. But calls for Israel to be kicked out swelled over the conduct of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza.

The allegations of Israeli government interference have added a new twist to the debate.

In September, Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS — citing human suffering in the Gaza war — said that it could no longer justify Israel’s participation in the contest. Several other countries took a similar stance.

The Dutch broadcaster went on to say there had been “proven interference by the Israeli government during the last edition of the Song Contest, with the event being used as a political instrument.” The statement didn’t elaborate.

That same month, the CEO of Israeli public broadcaster Kan, Golan Yochpaz, said that there was “no reason why we should not continue to be a significant part of this cultural event, which must not become political.”

Kan also said then that it was “convinced” that the EBU “will continue to maintain the apolitical, professional and cultural character of the competition, especially on the eve of the 70th anniversary of Eurovision” next year.

As part of the new Eurovision measures, in next year’s contest — scheduled to take place in May in Vienna — the number of votes per payment method will be reduced by half to 10, the EBU said.

In addition, “professional juries” will return to the semifinals for the first time since 2022 — a move that will give roughly 50-50 percentage weight between audience and jury votes, it said.

Organizers will also enhance safeguards to thwart “suspicious or coordinated voting activity” and strengthen security systems that “monitor, detect and prevent fraudulent patterns,” EBU said.

Contest director Martin Green said that the neutrality and integrity of the competition is of “paramount importance” to the EBU, its members, and audiences, adding that the event “should remain a neutral space and must not be instrumentalized.”

The EBU’s general assembly on Dec. 4-5 is poised to consider whether Israel can participate next year. A vote on that participation will only take place if member broadcasters decide the new steps are “not sufficient,” Green said.

  • Chevy Chase Addresses His SNL Exit 5 Decades Later

    [ad_1]

Nearly fifty years after his short time on Saturday Night Live, Chevy Chase addresses his exit from the show in the upcoming CNN documentary, I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not. The trailer also hints at reflecting on the fame he gained from the success of his later work.

Chevy Chase talks about leaving Saturday Night Live in new documentary

Veteran actor Chevy Chase reflects on his decision to leave SNL in the new CNN documentary, I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not. He said that it was a “mistake to leave SNL.”

Not much else has been revealed in the trailer on the subject, aside from the fact that the documentary will air on New Year’s Day. It also features interviews from other celebrities like Martin Short, Lorne Michaels, Beverly D’Angelo, and more.

Chase was one of the original cast members when Saturday Night Live debuted in 1975. At the time, the show was titled NBC’s Saturday Night. He starred alongside an ensemble cast that included Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, George Coe, and others.

He quickly became the breakout star of the show thanks to his Weekend Update segment and went on to work as both a writer and a performer.

In 1976, a year later, the Caddyshack star decided to leave SNL after his girlfriend, Jacqueline Carlin, expressed no desire to move to New York. He left the show and relocated to Los Angeles, where the two later married.

Despite his short stint on the show, his work earned him two Primetime Emmy awards in 1976. During its 1976–1977 second season, SNL replaced him with Bill Murray. Nonetheless, Chase remained connected to the show as a recurring guest host until 1999. After departing from the series, the actor continued to garner massive stardom with movies like Caddyshack and National Lampoon’s Vacation.

  • Miss Mexico Fatima Bosch Wins Miss Universe After Nawat Itsaragrisil Drama

    [ad_1]

Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch has been crowned the new Miss Universe, just weeks after a clash with an organizer resulted in contestants walking out.

Bosch, 25, won the competition at the Impact Challenger Hall in Nonthaburi, Thailand, which is north of Bangkok, on Friday, November 21. She was crowned by the previous winner, Miss Denmark Victoria Kjær Theilvig.

Miss Thailand Praveenar Singh, representing the host country, placed second, while Miss Venezuela Stephany Abasali came third, Miss Philippines Ma Ahtisa Manalo placed fourth and Miss Cote d’Ivoire Olivia Yace rounded out the top five.

During the question-and-answer portion of Friday’s competition, Bosch was asked how she’d use the title of “Miss Universe to create a safe space for women around the world,” per Cosmopolitan Philippines.

Miss Universe Mexico Fátima Bosch found herself in the middle of multiple unexpected controversies during the lead-up to the 2025 Miss Universe beauty pageant. Bosch became the first-ever queen from the Mexican state of Tabasco to win Miss Universe Mexico in September 2025, but her crowning moment went viral for all the wrong reasons. The […]

The pageant queen responded, “As a woman and as Miss Universe, I will put my voice and the power in the service of others because nowadays, we are here to speak up, to make change and have everything in view because we are women and the brave ones that stand up are the ones that will make history.”

Bosch’s victory comes nearly three weeks after the Miss Universe contest was mired in controversy as contestants walked out of a pre-pageant ceremony. On November 3, Nawat Itsaragrisil, a pageant executive representing Thailand, publicly scolded Bosch for not posting promotional content about the host nation on social media.

Itsaragrisil called security to intervene when Bosch stood up to leave and several other women followed, threatening to disqualify those who left in solidarity with Miss Mexico.

“He called me dumb because he has issues with the organization, and I think that’s unfair,” Bosch later told the press.

Beauty pageants aren’t always pretty. Competitive events from Miss USA to Miss Universe have all had their fair share of scandals and controversies over the years. In 1984, Miss America Vanessa Williams famously gave up her crown after nude photos were published in Penthouse. Years later, in 2006, Miss USA Tara Conner kept her sash […]

“I think the world needs to see this, because we are empowered women and this platform is for our voices. No one can silence it. No one will silence me,” she added. “It doesn’t matter if you have a big dream or a crown. If it takes away your dignity, you should walk away.”

As the incident made global headlines and went viral on social media, Miss Universe Organization president Raul Rocha issued a statement criticizing Itsaragrisil’s actions.

“I will not allow the values of respect and dignity toward women to be violated. Unfortunately, Nawat has forgotten the true meaning of what it means to be a genuine host,” Rocha said. “It means to demonstrate to all delegates of all countries that he, as a host, has the obligation to serve them, assist them and support them. And to ensure they have a unique life experience filled with kindness and courtesy.”

Itsaragrisil apologized for the incident in an Instagram video posted on November 4.

“If anyone [was] feeling not good, if anyone [was] not comfortable. If anyone [was effected], I do apologize for everyone,” he said.

Just a week after the walkout, two Miss Universe judges quit the competition before it was due to begin, with one claiming the selection process was rigged, per BBC News. The controversy continued as the pageant got underway, as Miss Jamaica Gabrielle Henry was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, November 19, after falling offstage.

  • Miss Mexico Is Crowned Miss Universe at a Pageant Where She Stood up to a Host’s Bullying

    [ad_1]

BANGKOK (AP) — Fátima Bosch Fernández of Mexico was crowned Miss Universe 2025 on Friday, a dramatic victory for a 25-year-old at the center of the turbulent 74th staging of the popular beauty pageant in Bangkok who stood up to public bullying from one of the hosts.

The first runner-up was 29-year old Praveenar Singh of Thailand and 25-year-old Stephany Adriana Abasali Nasser of Venezuela placed third.

Rounding up the finishers were Ahtisa Manalo, 28, of the Philippines, and 27-year-old Olivia Yacé of Ivory Coast who came fifth.

The bad vibes at this year’s event sprang from a sharp-tongued scolding of the Mexican contestant, Bosch, which sparked a controversy marked by a walkout, feminist solidarity and a teary melodramatic apology from the local organizer who set it all off.

At the livestreamed sashing ceremony for virtually all 130 contestants on Nov. 4, Thai national director Nawat Itsaragrisil hectored Bosch for allegedly not following his guidelines for taking part in local promotional activities. He called security when she spoke up to defend herself.

Bosch walked out of the room, joined by several others in a show of solidarity, including Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark.

“What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb,” an unbowed Bosch told Thai reporters. “If it takes away your dignity, you need to go.”

The Miss Universe Organization president, Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú, released a statement condemning Nawat’s conduct as “public aggression” and “serious abuse.”

Even Mexico’s first woman president, Claudia Sheinbaum, piled on, saying at a news conference in her country’s capital that she wanted to give “recognition” to Miss Mexico for voicing her disagreement in a “dignified” way.

“It seems to me that it is an example of how women should raise our voices,” Sheinbaum said.

Sheinbaum recalled being told in the past a common phrase that “women look more beautiful when they keep quiet.”

“We women look more beautiful when we raise our voice and participate, because that has to do with the recognition of our rights,” she said.

Nawat later made apologies for his actions, appearing both tearful and defiant at the same time .

“If anyone (was) affected and not comfortable it happened, I am so sorry,” he said in front of the contestants. He then turned to them and said “It’s passed. OK? Are you happy?”

Bosch’s official Miss Universe biography says she studied fashion in Mexico and Italy and has focused on creating sustainable designs and working with discarded materials. It says she has volunteered with sick children, promoted environmental awareness, and engaged in supported migrants and mental health issues.

This year’s competition also saw a report that two judges had quit, with one of them suggesting that there was an element of rigging to the contest. The allegation was denied. Separately, Thai police investigated the alleged illegal promotion of online casinos as part of the event’s publicity, a turn of events that may have been connected with the organizers’ feud.

Mishaps and controversies are not rare for the pageant. The 2021 event attracted criticism because it was held in Israel, to the dismay of supporters of the Palestinian cause.

An example of a minor misstep — literally — occurred Wednesday when Miss Universe Jamaica, Gabrielle Henry, fell off the stage during the evening gown competition. She was not badly hurt.

  • Fugees Rapper Pras Michel Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison Over Illegal Donations to Obama Campaign

    [ad_1]

WASHINGTON (AP) — Grammy-winning rapper Prakazrel “Pras” Michel of the Fugees was sentenced on Thursday to 14 years in prison for a case in which he was convicted of illegally funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

Michel, 52, declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentenced him.

In April 2023, a federal jury convicted Michel of 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The trial in Washington, D.C., included testimony from actor Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Justice Department prosecutors said federal sentencing guidelines recommended a life sentence for Michel, whom they said “betrayed his country for money” and “lied unapologetically and unrelentingly to carry out his schemes.”

“His sentence should reflect the breadth and depth of his crimes, his indifference to the risks to his country, and the magnitude of his greed,” they wrote.

Defense attorney Peter Zeidenberg said his client’s 14-year sentence is “completely disproportionate to the offense.” Michel will appeal his conviction and sentence, according to his lawyer.

Zeidenberg had recommended a three-year prison sentence. A life sentence would be an “absurdly high” punishment for Michel given that it is typically reserved for deadly terrorists and drug cartel leaders, Michel’s attorneys said in a court filing.

“The Government’s position is one that would cause Inspector Javert to recoil and, if anything, simply illustrates just how easily the Guidelines can be manipulated to produce absurd results, and how poorly equipped they are, at least on this occasion, to determine a fair and just sentence,” they wrote.

  • The Beast in Me’s Claire Danes Reflects on Surprising Pregnancy at 44

    [ad_1]

Claire Danes recently reflected on having a child with her husband, Hugh Dancy, at the age of 44. She also discussed what it was like to learn she was pregnant at that age. This podcast appearance follows the premiere of her new Netflix series, The Beast in Me.

Claire Danes talks about giving birth at 44

In conversation with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, on their podcast SmartLess, Claire Danes, 46, discussed her experience of getting pregnant at the age of 44.

As they spoke about her current residence, which she revealed to be a brownstone building in NYC, Danes went on to explain her family’s move to the Big Apple. “We’ve been here not for very long,” she claimed. The actress shared that they’ve been in this place for about a year because they had an “oopsie daisy” third child.

“I was so old when that happened. I was 44,” Danes mentioned. When asked by the hosts how old the baby is now, Danes replied, saying, “She’s two now.”

The Homeland actress then went on to share what it was like discovering her pregnancy at her age. “I didn’t think it was possible. I really didn’t,” she shared, and then admitted, “I was terrified. But it was okay.”

Further, agreeing with the hosts that it was indeed a “blessing,” she answered Arnett’s question about how she felt, having a surprise pregnancy. “Well, you know, it was actually very interesting,” she explained. “Because I did not foresee this at all. And it was weird; suddenly I felt like a funny shame. Like I was naughty. Like I’ve been caught fornicating past the point I was meant to,” Danes added.

She further described how the experience was “wild” as she discovered an “edge” that she hadn’t been really conscious of. Danes also shared how the whole incident felt like she was “going outside of the parameters.”

Notably, Danes shares three children with Dancy, two boys and a daughter, all of them having about a five-year age difference between them.

  • Rapper Nicki Minaj Calls for Protections for Christians in Nigeria at UN Event

    [ad_1]

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Rapper Nicki Minaj took up President Donald Trump’s allegations that Christians are persecuted in Nigeria, saying Tuesday at a United Nations event organized by the U.S. that she wants to shine a spotlight on “the deadly threat.”

The Trinidadian-born Minaj thanked Trump for his leadership and for calling for urgent action “to defend Christians in Nigeria, to combat extremism and to bring a stop to violence against those who simply want to exercise their natural right to freedom of religion or belief.”

She spoke at a panel at the U.S. mission to the United Nations along with U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and faith leaders. The event came after she replied to Trump’s social media post about Nigeria earlier this month, saying, “No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion.”

In a post Sunday on X, Pope Leo XIV said Christians are suffering discrimination and persecution in various parts of the world, pointing to Nigeria and other countries like Bangladesh, Mozambique and Sudan.

Introducing Minaj, Waltz said, “She steps on to this world stage not as a celebrity but as a witness … to spotlight Nigeria’s persecuted church” to her millions of social media followers.

Saying she was “very nervous” to speak before the panel, Minaj vowed to keep standing up “in the face of injustice” for anyone anywhere who is being persecuted for their beliefs.

“Sadly, this problem is not only a growing problem in Nigeria, but also in so many other countries around the world,” she said.

Minaj said she wanted to make clear that protecting Christians in Nigeria wasn’t about taking sides or dividing people. “It is about uniting people,” she said, calling Nigeria “a beautiful nation with deep faith traditions” that she can’t wait to see.

The rap star did make one reference to music in her remarks, saying it has taken her around the world and she has seen how people everywhere come alive when they hear a song “that touches their soul.”

“Religious freedom means we all sing our faith regardless of who we are, where we live and what we believe,” Minaj said.

  • Now You See Me 3 Director Breaks Down Fan Favorite Character’s Return

    [ad_1]

Director Ruben Fleischer recently addressed Isla Fisher‘s much-awaited return to the Now You See Me franchise in Now You See Me 3 after she didn’t appear in the second film. The 51-year-old filmmaker opened up about Fisher’s appearance in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t in a recent discussion, stating that her return helped in bridging the narrative gap that had opened due to her absence in the 2016 sequel.

Ruben Fleischer brought back Isla Fisher in Now You See Me 3 ‘to right the wrong’

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Fleischer revealed he was extremely enthusiastic about adding Fisher to the Now You See Me: Now You Don’t cast as it enabled him to “right the wrong.”

“One thing that I was particularly excited about was shoring up the previous two movies and making this one answer some questions that along the way got asked, like what happened to Henley? Why was she not in the second movie? And so it was really important to bring Isla Fisher back and to right the wrong,” the seasoned filmmaker said.

Nevertheless, bringing Isla Fisher back in Now You See Me 3 initially proved to be a conundrum with the creative team having “many discussions” to try and justify her return after such a prolonged absence.

Ultimately, the creative team behind the sequel decided to mix fiction with reality. “We kept it pretty true to life, because in reality, the reason that she wasn’t able to be in the second movie was that she was seven months pregnant when they were due to start filming,” Fleischer said.

He further added, “So when we were planning her backstory, we kind of just leaned into reality and said that she left because she had to raise a family, and she was sick of putting her life on the line as an assistant on a daily basis, and that she just wanted to settle down. She prioritized family.”

Now You See Me 3 premiered in theaters on 14 November 2025 and has performed above expectations at the box office in its first weekend.

  • David Henrie Teases Who Will Play Billie’s Dad on Wizards Season 3

    [ad_1]

David Henrie has heard those crazy rumors that Wizards Beyond Waverly Place killed off Selena Gomez’s character, Alex Russo — and he’s ready to set the record straight.

“When you make something, you have certain expectations, and then when it comes out, there’s a whole other set of expectations that you had no idea are going to emerge,” Henrie, 36, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting his partnership with Butterball’s Thanksgiving Hosting Pants. “I didn’t think in a million years anyone would think Alex was dead. In fact, nobody making the show thought people would assume Alex is dead.”

Season 2 of Wizards, which released on Disney+ last month, caught back up with Alex’s protegé, Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), as she continued to adjust to the mortal world while living and practicing her wizardry with Justin Russo (Henrie) and his family.

Things took a turn during the season finale when Billie was kidnapped and nearly dragged to an alternate dimension by the evil Lord Morsus. She was saved in the episode’s final moments, however, when Alex’s tears reversed a memory spell that revealed she is Billie’s mother — and Lord Morbus’ son, Damian, is Billie’s dad. To save her daughter, Alex jumped into the open portal, dragging Morsus along with her.

Related: David Henrie Reflects on His and Selena Gomez’s ‘Meaningful’ TV Reunion

Alex and Justin Russo are officially back on the small screen. Selena Gomez reunited with her onscreen older brother David Henrie during the series premiere of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. The series — the first two episodes of which premiered on Disney Channel on Tuesday, October 29 — picks up with an older (and powerless) […]

Shortly after the finale was released, fans took to social media in panic that Alex had been killed off the show for good, with many condemning the series for the shocking decision. The theories quickly went viral, leaving Henrie and the rest of the Wizards cast and crew “flabbergasted” by the confused response.

“No one saw that reaction coming. Nobody,” Henrie said, explaining the series of events that led to the viral rumor. “Someone just put it online as if it’s what happened, and then suddenly the whole Internet just believed it. We were never trying to kill Alex Russo, she just went through a portal off into another realm!”

As for where Alex actually is, Henrie promised that — along with many other questions — will be answered should the show be picked up for a season 3. “We will absolutely answer the question of what happened to her, because it’s a valid question,” he said. “You know, she went through a massive portal. What the heck happened? We will dig into that.”

Henrie confirmed that the series will also delve more into who Billie’s father, a.k.a Alex’s husband, is (or was) by exploring the past. That means “retracing old footsteps and rediscovering old characters” is also on the table, including what happened between Alex and her Wizards of Waverly Place werewolf boyfriend, Mason (Gregg Sulkin).

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2
    Disney/Eric McCandless

“It is absolutely safe to say that,” Henrie replied when asked if viewers will find out what happened to Alex and Mason’s fan favorite romance, which was going strong when the original series wrapped up in 2012. (Wizards of Waverly Place aired for four seasons from 2007 to 2012. The revival returned to record breaking numbers in 2024.)

As for who will play Damion, Henrie — who also serves as an executive producer on the show with Gomez — told Us he’s “absolutely” heard the the popular fan request to cast Disney alum Jordan Fisher in the role, but also has someone else in mind.

“We’ll look into [Jordan[ for sure, because I know people really want that, but the guy who I would really push for is a friend of mine named Lamorne Morris,” Henrie said, noting that he and the New Girl star are interested in doing projects their kids can enjoy. “I think he would be amazing. I haven’t spoken to him about this yet, but I’m planning to when the time is right. And you know, who knows what happens?”

Fans will need to wait and see what comes next for Justin, Alex Billie and the rest of the magical gang as Wizards Beyond Waverly Place has yet to be picked up for a third season by Disney. For now, Henrie is pivoting his focus from his sitcom family to real-life family as he prepares to host Thanksgiving for the first time — a task that’s been made easier by Butterball’s new Thanksgiving Hosting Pants.

The pants, which serve as a fun and functional solution to help holiday hosts get a leg up and feel confident going into holiday chaos, are comfortable, stylish and ensure hosting essentials are always in reach. In addition to a bespoke pocket for a meat thermometer, the pants also contain a phone pocket emblazoned with 1-800-BUTTERBALL, ready for all hosting questions to easily reach the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line experts, a towel loop — Henrie’s favorite accessory — and a built-in bottle opener.

“The pants are a reminder to have fun, because I tend [to lean] toward perfectionism and wanting everything exactly right on Thanksgiving, to the point where it takes all the fun out of it,” Henrie confessed. “So for me, I can have my normal attitude of wanting to everything right, but at the same time, I can always look down and remember, ‘Oh, this is supposed to be fun.’”

But it’s not all about having style. “They also help me be more efficient, because it’s got all these gadgets and gizmos to help you,” he added. “ You got your weapons on you, so you’re totally in like, a Commando gearing up scene, ready for battle.”

As for any other tips Henrie can give to someone who’s also preparing to host their first major holiday dinner this year, Henrie said it’s all about preparation.

  • The Goonies’ Ke Huy Quan Shares Exciting Sequel Movie Update

    [ad_1]

Ke Huy Quan addressed one of the most talked about questions surrounding the future of The Goonies while promoting his latest project. The original cast member explained where development on the long discussed sequel currently stands. They also shared new details about the progress of the script.

Ke Huy Quan talks about The Goonies sequel

Ke Huy Quan discussed the status of The Goonies sequel in an interview with ComicBook while promoting Zootopia 2. He said he has not read the script but confirmed that a second draft has been completed. Quan explained, “I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event and he was so excited,” and added, “We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it.”

Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg are developing the sequel, Quan said. He noted the progress on the script, stating, “I read he turned in the second draft and they’re really happy about it.” He also told Fortune Feimster, “We’re gonna do it. I want her to be in it,” while confirming that he wants to play Richard “Data” Wang again. He said, “I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.”

Potsy Ponciroli joined the project as the screenwriter when the announcement was made earlier in the year. Warner Bros. reported in January that the team had begun work on a sequel, and the studio confirmed in February that the film was officially moving forward. The 1985 film was a hit and later entered the United States National Film Registry for its cultural significance.

Josh Brolin shared information about earlier drafts in August (via Entertainment Online). He said writers had produced several scripts in previous years, but the team did not approve them. Reports at the time noted that these versions did not align with the direction the studio intended to pursue.

Quan’s comments about a completed second draft marked the latest step in the ongoing development of a new Goonies film.

  • Stefon Diggs Sues Influencer Christopher Blake Griffin Over Alleged Libel

    [ad_1]

Stefon Diggs is fighting against some serious claims from a social media influencer.

The NFL star filed a libel lawsuit on October 1, according to TMZ, accusing influencer Christopher Blake Griffith of making up a story about the New England Patriots wide receiver.

Griffith claims Diggs, 31, drugged and sexually assaulted him in 2023.

In the lawsuit, Diggs claims he, along with Griffith and others, went to a club in Washington D.C. after a charity basketball game at the time, before going to Diggs’s home. Diggs then claims he went to his bedroom to wrap up the evening while his assistant asked Griffith to leave the house. It was at this time that the alleged sexual assault took place.

In the summer of 2025, over two years after the alleged incident, Griffith took to social media to put Diggs under fire about what he claims happened the evening, alleging that the wide receiver “drugged and sexually assaulted” him that night and conspired to have him killed to “suppress his gay/bisexual secrets from becoming exposed.”

Griffith posted an Instagram story at the time, claiming the assault and tagging the footwear company Ugg and actress Sarah Jessica Parker in the post. (Both had just participated in a campaign for Ugg).

The influencer said he was “disgusted” that the company hired Diggs for the campaign after he filed a police report from the May 2023 incident.

He also shared what he claimed was a copy of his police report in the August 2025 post, tagging the NFL and the Patriots in the post.

“Y’all gon let Aaron Hernandez 2.0 just run wild without penalty?” Griffith posted on his Instagram story, referring to the late tight end who was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2015 before dying by suicide while incarcerated in 2017.

“I’m aware that you’re aware & since we’re BOTH aware, let’s act accordingly.”

Griffith, in the police report, claimed Diggs offered him candy that was “laced with drugs” without his knowledge.

He then accused Diggs of putting his tongue in Griffith’s ear in a “kissing” fashion, and that Griffith was asked by three people to stay quiet on the events that allegedly took place.

In a statement obtained by multiple outlets, Griffith’s lawyer, Jake Lebowitz, denied Diggs’ claims that the events ever happened.

“Mr. Griffith is looking forward to showing the world in Court that regardless of the fairy tale fabricated by Mr. Diggs’ high-priced New York Lawyers, he is the victim of Mr. Diggs’ unwanted sexual advances and his brother’s violent attacks.

  • ‘Now You See Me 3’ Races Past ‘The Running Man’ at Box Office

    [ad_1]

It’s no magic trick: The third installment in the thieving magician “Now You See Me” series beat the high-profile action pic “The Running Man” at the North American box office this weekend. Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” pulled in $21.3 million, while Paramount’s “The Running Man” made $17 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

“Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” which cost a reported $90 million to produce, comes almost 10 years after the second film. Including ticket sales from 64 international territories, its worldwide opening is estimated to be around $75.5 million. Going into the weekend, it was expected to be a closer race between the two newcomers.

The first two movies in the “Now You See Me” series, released in 2013 and 2016, earned over $686 million worldwide. This installment, directed by Ruben Fleischer, sees the return of the original “Four Horsemen,” Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco, and introduces three younger magicians into the mix: Dominic Sessa, Ariana Greenblatt and Justice Smith. A fourth film is already in the works.

Reviews were mixed on Rotten Tomatoes, coming in at 59%. According to PostTrak polling, audiences were a bit more positive, with 63% saying they would definitely recommend.

Audience scores were slightly less for “The Running Man,” which had a 58% “definitely recommend.” Both earned a B+ CinemaScore, but more people chose the franchise. One key difference is that women made up more of the “Now You See Me” audience (54%). They only accounted for 37% of “The Running Man” ticket buyers.

Edgar Wright directed and co-wrote “The Running Man,” the second adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, first published in 1982. The first film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was released in 1987 to mixed reviews and a tepid box office, earning only $38 million against a $27 million budget. The new version stars Glen Powell, who has had a good track record starring in box office hits, from the romantic comedy “Anyone But You” to “Twisters.”

Paramount Pictures released “The Running Man” in 3,400 domestic locations and 58 international markets. Worldwide, it earned $28.2 million against a reported $110 million budget.

The weekend’s other new opener, “Keeper,” the third feature from “Longlegs” filmmaker Oz Perkins, cratered with $2.6 million and a D+ CinemaScore. But as an acquisition title for Neon, it’s also not a disaster.

Third place went to “Predator: Badlands” with $13 million in its second weekend, followed by “Regretting You” in fourth with $4 million. “Black Phone 2” rounded out the top five with $2.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $74.7 million after five weeks in theaters.

In anticipation of the big budget musical “Wicked: For Good,” which opens next week, Universal Pictures put “Wicked” back in 2,195 theaters, where it made $1.2 million — barely missing a spot in the top 10.

The box office should pick up considerably when “Wicked 2” blows into theaters, followed by “Zootopia 2” before the Thanksgiving holiday. Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian said it could be one of the highest grossing five-day Thanksgiving frames of all time.

    [ad_1]

Three new Bravolebrities would like to check into the Love Hotel.

During the Saturday, November 15, “Getting Lucky at the Love Hotel” panel at BravoCon 2025, Porsha Williams, Sonja Morgan and Heather Gay teased that they were interested in joining a potential second season of the reality TV series. (A second iteration has not yet been confirmed, with Williams, Morgan and Gay being voted by Bravo insiders to appear on the panel.)

“People know I’m a lover girl, like, I’m a hopeless romantic,” Porsha, 44, said on Saturday. “I think everybody in the world knows I just got divorced [from Simon Guobadia]. Amen to that, so I think that’s why [I was a favorite].”

As for Heather, 51, she is equally “ready to manifest some love in [her] life.”

“It’s been a minute, so I’m hopeful,” the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star said.

Heather was previously married to Billy Gay, with whom she shares three adult daughters. Since then, she’s been candid about trying to date after divorce.

Meanwhile, Sonja, 61, is also looking for love after a slew of love life ups and downs.

“I think everyone in this room knows why,” Sonja joked. “No, but seriously, I should be thinking about settling down. My schedule’s freed up quite a bit — and I do like a damn man. I’m being careful with the ‘D word.’ Sorry.”

Love Hotel season 1 premiered in March, following Shannon Beador, Gizelle Bryant, Ashley Darby and Luann de Lesseps’ attempts at dating at a luxurious Mexican resort. Despite a season of highs and lows, only Luann, 60, walked away in a relationship with contestant James Quine.

Luann and James, 62, soon sparked engagement speculation in June after the Real Housewives of New York City alum was spotted wearing a major diamond on her ring finger.

“I will say that I got a brand new ring, and I’m a very happy girl,” Luann exclusively told Us in June. “And that’s all I can say about that for now.”

Weeks later, Luann offered more insight into her new sparkler while appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.

It was a different scene for Real Housewives of New York City alums Luann de Lesseps and Sonja Morgan when they arrived in Benton, Illinois, to film their spinoff series, Luann & Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake. After years of private jets and luxury yachts, the duo found themselves in an unairconditioned sedan, driving sans […]

“It is an aquamarine [ring]. It was a gift from one of my admirers, that’s all I’m gonna say,” Luann said, noting that James did not present her with the rock and instead gave her a necklace. “The key is from James.”

She added, “You know what I love about James? He said to me, ‘You know, Lu, I live in Hawaii, I can’t be there with you all the time. It is totally OK if you date, and when we see each other, we see each other, because I love you, Lu.’ I feel like a 9-year-old girl when I’m with him.”

Luann and James had especially bonded on Love Hotel over their aristocratic backgrounds. James’ stepmother was a close friend of the late Grace Kelly, while Luann’s ex-husband is Count Alexandre de Lesseps.

“My father-in-law was ambassador of Monaco for 40 years and his stepmother was the best friend of Grace Kelly,” she said on WWHL this summer. “They were both at the wedding of Rainier to Princess Grace. We connected that way.”

A potential Love Hotel season 2 has yet to be confirmed or officially announced.
