  • What to Expect From CES 2026, the Annual Show of All Things Tech?

    LAS VEGAS (AP) — With the start of the New Year squarely behind us, it’s once again time for the annual CES trade show to shine a spotlight on the latest tech companies plan on offering in 2026.

    The multi-day event, organized by the Consumer Technology Association, kicks off this week in Las Vegas, where advances across industries like robotics, healthcare, vehicles, wearables, gaming and more are set to be on display.

    Artificial intelligence will be anchored in nearly everything, again, as the tech industry explores offerings consumers will want to buy. AI industry heavyweight Jensen Huang will be taking the stage to showcase Nvidia’s latest productivity solutions, and AMD CEO Lisa Su will keynote to “share her vision for delivering future AI solutions.” Expect AI to come up in other keynotes, like from Lenovo’s CEO, Yuanqing Yang.

    The AI industry is out in full force tackling issues in healthcare, with a particular emphasis on changing individual health habits to treat conditions — such as Beyond Medicine’s prescription app focused on a particular jaw disorder — or addressing data shortages in subjects such as breast milk production.

    Expect more unveils around domestic robots too. Korean tech giant LG already has announced it will show off a helper bot named “ CLOiD,” which allegedly will handle a range of household tasks. Hyundai also is announcing a major push on robotics and manufacturing advancements. Extended reality, basically a virtual training ground for robots and other physical AI, is also in the buzz around CES.

    In 2025, more than 141,000 attendees from over 150 countries, regions, and territories attended the CES. Organizers expect around the same numbers for this year’s show, with more than 3,500 exhibitors across the floor space this week.

    The AP spoke with CTA Executive Chair and CEO Gary Shapiro about what to expect for CES 2026. The conversation has been edited for clarity and length.


    What are the main themes we can expect this week?

    Well, we have a lot at this year’s show.

    Obviously, using AI in a way that makes sense for people. We’re seeing a lot in robotics. More robots and humanoid-looking robots than we’ve ever had before.

    We also see longevity in health, there’s a lot of focus on that. All sorts of wearable devices for almost every part of the body. Technology is answering healthcare’s gaps very quickly and that’s great for everyone.

    Mobility is big with not only self-driving vehicles but also with boats and drones and all sorts of other ways of getting around. That’s very important.

    And of course, content creation is always very big.


    Is 2026 the year we finally see humanoid robots in people’s homes?

    You are seeing humanoid robots right now. It sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t.

    But yes, there are more and more humanoid robots. And when we talk about CES 5, 10, 15, 20 years now, we’re going to see an even larger range of humanoid robots.

    Obviously, last year we saw a great interest in them. The number one product of the show was a little robotic dog that seems so life-like and fun, and affectionate for people that need that type of affection.

    But of course, the humanoid robots are just one aspect of that industry. There’s a lot of specialization in robot creation, depending on what you want the robot to do. And robots can do many things that humans can’t.


    Will we start seeing more innovative use of AI tools in entertainment?

    AI is the future of creativity.

    Certainly AI itself may be arguably creative, but the human mind is so unique that you definitely get new ideas that way. So I think the future is more of a hybrid approach, where content creators are working with AI to craft variations on a theme or to better monetize what they have to a broader audience.


    Any interesting AI-powered devices or services that consumers will want to buy?

    We’re seeing all sorts of different devices that are implementing AI. But we have a special focus at this show, for the first time, on the disability community. Verizon set this whole stage up where we have all different ways of taking this technology and having it help people with disabilities and older people.


    Are you concerned about a potential AI bubble?

    Well, there’s definitely no bubble when it comes to what AI can do. And what AI can do is perform miracles and solve fundamental human problems in food production and clean air and clean water. Obviously in healthcare, it’s gonna be overwhelming.

    But this was like the internet itself. There was a lot of talk about a bubble, and there actually was a bubble. The difference is that in late 1990s there were basically were no revenue models. Companies were raising a lot of money with no plans for revenue.

    These AI companies have significant revenues today, and companies are investing in it.

    What I’m more concerned about, honestly, is not Wall Street and a bubble. Others can be concerned about that. I’m concerned about getting enough energy to process all that AI. And at this show, for the first time, we have a Korean company showing the first ever small-scale nuclear-powered energy creation device. We expect more and more of these people rushing to fill this gap because we need the energy, we need it clean and we need a kind of all-of-the-above solution.

    Keltie Knight‘s awards season mishaps continued at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards.

    The E! Live From the Red Carpet host took the stage on Sunday, January 4, alongside costar Justin Sylvester and nearly tripped while walking on stage. To make matters worse, the Critics Choice announcer mispronounced Knight’s name, calling her “Kelsey” before quickly recovering.

    Knight, 43, handled the whole thing like a pro — keeping a huge smile the entire time — before she and Sylvester, 39, told the crowd that they’d be giving out some awards throughout the evening.

    “The Critics Choice Awards, they really have so many categories and we have so little time,” Knight said. “Throughout the night we’re going to be revealing other winners.”

    The duo announced a few awards, including Best Comedy, which went to The Naked Gun, Best Foreign Language Series, which went to Squid Game, Best Animated Series, which went to South Park, Best Foreign Language Film, which went to The Secret Agent, Best Cinematography, which went to Adolpho Veloso for Train Dreams, and Best Comedy Special, which went to SNL50: The Anniversary Special.

    Shortly after the near-fall, Knight joked about the situation on social media, sharing a clip of the moment via Instagram with the caption, “OOP! I did it again ✨.”

    Sunday’s onstage trip marked the third year in a row that something happened to Knight while she was working an awards show.

    During last year’s awards season, Knight showcased her fall when working at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

    “WHY DOES SOMETHING HAPPEN ON EVERY RED CARPET,” she captioned a February 2025 Instagram Story video. “JUST LET ME LIVE.”

    Knight could be seen lifting up her dress in the clip before twisting her ankle and taking a tumble before the red carpet even started.

    While the two falls might have brought a laugh to Knight (and her followers), the diamond debacle during the 2024 Golden Globe Awards made major headlines.

    “Hi everyone, Golden Globes emergency,” she shared in a January 2024 Instagram Story. “If you’re a celebrity and you see a 4-carat diamond on the red carpet, please return it to Keltie Knight at E! ‘cause it’s gone. … And it’s real.”

    She captioned the video, writing, “MISSING DIAMOND @ #goldenglobes … Humble brag but also help!”

    All’s well that ended well, since Knight ended up getting an even “bigger” rock in February 2024.

    “Losing the diamond was hard but realizing it hadn’t been put on our insurance was even worse,” she told People. “Everywhere I went, whether it be the grocery store or my niece’s school production of Legally Blonde, strangers were coming up to me asking ‘Did you find the ring?’”

    Knight has been an integral part of awards season for years. She hosted E! News from 2022 until the show came to an end in September 2025. Now, Knight is working on her first solo book, set to be released this year.

    “I’m getting even more unhinged, if you can believe it,” she told Us Weekly exclusively in September 2025. “I am writing a solo book. It is called The F*** Them Theory: Self-Help for People Who Are Done Being a Bigger Person. My manuscript is due next week, so no stress.”

  • Underrated Liam Neeson Action Thriller Arriving on Hulu Soon

    As per ComicBook.com, the action thriller, directed by Nimród Antal and written by Chris Salmanpour, is officially coming to the shores of the said streaming service on January 21, 2026.

    Featuring Liam Neeson in the lead, the action movie revolves around the misadventures of a financier and father of two, Matt Turner. One day, while driving with his children, he receives a threatening phone call from a mysterious person, who informs him that there is an active bomb in his car. As such, to ensure the survival of his kids, Turner decides to comply with the unknown assailant’s demands, all the while contemplating a way to get out of the scuffle.

    A remake of the 2015 Spanish action thriller El desconocido, the movie also features a competent supporting cast alongside Neeson, including Noma Dumezweni, Lilly Aspell, Jack Champion, Arian Moayed, Embeth Davidtz, and Matthew Modine.

    Despite having a veteran actor like Liam Neeson in the lead, Retribution failed to impress both audiences and critics upon its release. The film could only gather a little over $18 million at the worldwide box office during its theatrical run, as per Box Office Mojo.

    Moreover, the movie has recorded an underwhelming Tomatometer score of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, viewers seem to have enjoyed Retribution a bit more upon its digital premiere, as evidenced by a much more impressive PopcornMeter score of 67%. Thus, fans of the film can look forward to streaming it on Hulu soon.

  • French Government Defends Granting Citizenship to George and Amal Clooney

    PARIS (AP) — Actor George Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney were granted French citizenship because “they contribute, through their distinguished actions, to France’s international influence and cultural outreach,” the French government said Wednesday, defending their naturalization that was questioned by a junior French minister.

    The naturalizations of the Kentucky-born star of the “Ocean’s” series of heist movies, his wife and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, and their twins Ella and Alexander were announced last weekend in the Journal Officiel, where French government decrees are published.

    Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior minister at the Interior Ministry, expressed misgivings Wednesday that some of the Clooneys’ new French compatriots may think that the star couple was granted special treatment. The actor speaks only what he himself says is “horrible, horrible” French.

    “The message being sent is not good,” Vedrenne said in an interview with broadcaster France Info. “There is an issue of fairness that, in my eyes, is absolutely essential.”

    The couple purchased an estate in France in 2021 and Clooney has said that it’s their primary residence. Non-French residents of France have multiple possible routes to becoming naturalized. It wasn’t clear whether the 64-year-old actor retained his American citizenship. His 47-year-old wife was born in Lebanon and raised in the U.K and naturalized by France under her maiden name, Amal Alamuddin. The 8-year-old twins were born in London.

    The Foreign Ministry said the Clooneys were eligible for citizenship under a French law that allows for the naturalization of foreign nationals who contribute to France’s international influence and economic well-being.

    It argued that France’s cinema industry will benefit from the actor’s clout as a global movie star and said that as a lawyer, Amal Clooney regularly works with academic institutions and international organizations in France.

    “They maintain strong personal, professional and family ties with our country,” the ministry said.

    “Like many French citizens, we are delighted to welcome Georges and Amal Clooney into the national community,” it concluded, giving the actor’s first name a French twist by adding the “s” at the end.

    The decision was also defended by Vedrenne’s superior at the Interior Ministry, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who said he signed the naturalization decree.

    “It’s a big chance for our country,” he said.

    In recent media interviews when he was promoting “Jay Kelly,” Clooney said that he is trying to teach himself French using a language-learning app. He said that his wife and children speak the language perfectly.

    “They speak French in front of me so that they can say terrible things about me to my face and I don’t know,” he joked, speaking to French broadcaster Canal+.

    French media have reported that the Clooneys live part-time in their luxury 18th-century villa outside the town of Brignoles in southern France, where they can keep a lower profile and their children are protected from unauthorized photographs by French privacy laws.

    In an interview with Esquire in October, Clooney said: “I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood.”

    “I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids,” he said. Growing up away from the spotlight in France, “they have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

  • Isiah Whitlock Jr., Actor From ‘The Wire,’ ‘Veep’ and Spike Lee Films, Dies at 71

    Isiah Whitlock Jr., an actor who made frequent memorable appearances on the HBO series “The Wire” and “Veep” and in the films of Spike Lee, died Tuesday. He was 71.

    Whitlock’s manager Brian Liebman told The Associated Press in an email that the actor died in New York after a short illness.

    Whitlock played openly corrupt city councilman Clay Davis on 25 episodes across the five seasons of “The Wire.”

    Davis, a fan-favorite character, was known for his profane catchphrase — “sheee-it” — delivered by Whitlock in moments of triumph and blunt honesty. The actor first used the phrase in his first film with Lee, 2002’s “The 25th Hour.”

    “The Wire” creator David Simon posted a photo of Whitlock on Bluesky in tribute.

    Whitlock is the second significant star of the show to die in recent weeks after the death of actor James Ransone.

    A native of South Bend, Indiana, Whitlock went to Southwest Minnesota State University, where he played football and studied theater. Injuries pushed him to study acting, and he moved to San Francisco to work in theater.

    He began appearing in small television guest roles on shows including “Cagney and Lacy” in the late 1980s, and he had very small roles in the 1990 films “Goodfellas” and “Gremlins 2: The New Batch.”

    He went on to appear in five of Lee’s films, including “She Hate Me,” “Red Hook Summer,” “Chi-Raq,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “Da 5 Bloods.”

    He played Secretary of Defense George Maddox for three seasons on the political satire “Veep.” The character ran against Julia Louis-Dreyfus ‘ Selina Meyer in presidential primaries.

    The two RHOC castmates recently collaborated for an episode of Vicki Gunvalson’s podcast, where she told listeners that she learned her contract would not be renewed after Season 14 in 2019. She said the call came while she was at an insurance conference in Las Vegas with then-fiancé Steve Lodge.

    “It was horrible,” Gunvalson said on the My Friend, My Soulmate, My Podcast, and recalled standing on a balcony and crying. “I think I just got fired, but I think they have the wrong number,” she added, describing her shock.

    Meanwhile, Tamra Judge, who was also fired before RHOC Season 15 in early 2020, described a very different reaction. She said she had expected a meeting about her future, only to get a call that producers “decided to go in another direction.” In her telling, Judge did not hide her anger. “And you know what I said? ‘Go f— yourself,’” she said.

    Both RHOC alumnae have reflected on how sudden and painful the news felt at the time. However, Gunvalson, one of the franchise’s original stars, has since returned to RHOC as a full-time cast member. This move seemingly closes a long chapter and shifts the story back toward the series’ early roots.

    Judge previously addressed her firing before Season 15 during a panel at BravoCon 2022. “I was like, ‘Oh s—.’ Like, really? This is happening?’” Judge stated. “I got to a state where, the first year, I was in a fetal position crying. I was very sad about not being on the scene, everybody filming, and all that stuff.” (via People)

  • Joe Rogan Slams Donald Trump for Mocking Rob Reiner’s Death

    Joe Rogan called out Donald Trump on his podcast after the President made a controversial comment on the deaths of veteran Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner. The podcast host criticized Trump’s remarks, saying they were “not funny.”

    Earlier this month, veteran comedian and filmmaker Rob Reiner was found dead in his California home alongside his wife, Michelle. Authorities are investigating the deaths as homicides. The news sent shockwaves through Hollywood, with many prominent figures paying tribute to the director.

    However, Donald Trump responded differently. In a post on his Truth Social account, the President wrote about Reiner, “He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession with President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

    The comments did not sit well with most people, including Joe Rogan, who called the President out on his podcast.

    “The Rob Reiner thing is not funny,” Rogan said. “When you see it with no empathy, that’s when it’s hard to like.”

    Podcast guest Shane Gillis agreed that the comments were wrong and said he wished Trump “could apologize” for them. However, both Gillis and Rogan acknowledged that an apology was unlikely.

    Rogan continued, “Listen, there’s no justification for what he did that makes any sense in a compassionate society. It’s no different than people that were celebrating when Charlie Kirk got shot. It’s the same kind of thing.”

    The two then discussed how the public reaction might have differed if a former president had made similar remarks. “Imagine if Obama tweeted something about someone after they died in this way,” Rogan said. “That this person was a deranged person that hated Obama.”

    They went on to describe the situation as “crazy.” Rogan added, “It’s so disappointing. It’s like why. If you say that privately, that’s one thing, which is also crazy, but it’s so disappointing.”

    Rogan further remarked that someone should have taken “his f***ing phone” away.

    Fans awaiting the continuation of One-Punch Man Season 3 may need to wait longer than expected. Bandai Namco Filmworks has confirmed that Season 3 Part 2 will not arrive in 2026 and is instead scheduled to premiere in 2027. 

    The announcement was made shortly after the conclusion of Season 3 Part 1, which wrapped its broadcast on December 28. While the series remains one of the most popular anime franchises globally, the first part of Season 3 was met with mixed reactions, particularly regarding overall production quality. Despite the criticism, J.C. Staff will continue as the animation studio for Part 2.

    Alongside the release window confirmation, a new teaser trailer and promotional visual were revealed. Both heavily emphasize the long-anticipated confrontation between Saitama and Garou, hinting that Part 2 will move toward the climax of the Monster Association Arc. The teaser features brief audio cues from the two characters, hinting at a confrontation of “Supreme Power vs. Ultimate Fear.” The second part is expected to complete the arc introduced earlier in the season.

    Based on the manga created by ONE, One-Punch Man first premiered as an anime in 2015. Season 3 continues under the direction of Shinpei Nagai, with series composition by Tomohiro Suzuki. Character designs are handled by Chikashi Kubota, Shinjirou Kuroda, and Ryosuke Shirakawa, while music composition is once again led by Makoto Miyazaki. 

    Though Season 3 has faced significant backlash compared to earlier installments, anticipation remains high for Part 2. For now, Bandai Namco Filmworks has not provided a more specific release window beyond the year 2027.

    As per Box Office Mojo, the movie was made on a reported budget of $65 million. It made an opening collection of over $13.3 million in the US theaters. At the domestic box office, Zodiac managed to earn over $33 million, and grossed $51.7 million in the international market. This took the movie’s total worldwide collection to $84.7 million.

    Despite the disappointing box office performance, Zodiac received immense praise from the critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 90 percent on the Tomatometer based on 264 critic reviews. On the other hand, it received a score of 77 percent on the Popcornmeter based on the audience’s verdict.

    In December 2023, Robert Downey Jr. reunited with Mark Ruffalo on Variety’s Actors on Actors and recalled working with David Fincher on Zodiac. He said, “I called Fincher recently because in retrospect, everything changes.”

    The Avengers: Endgame star further added how working with Christopher Nolan on Oppenheimer made him develop “a new respect for Fincher.” He added how it was the first time he and Ruffalo were working under an “exacting director. A real director, who does things a certain way.”

Originally released on 2019, the film has since gained wider following. The upcoming streaming release gives audiences another opportunity to revisit underrated film.

    Ad Astra finds Peacock streaming release date

    Peacock has confirmed that the science-fiction drama Ad Astra will be added to its streaming library at the beginning of 2026. The movie, led by Brad Pitt, is set to arrive on the platform on January 1, 2026, giving subscribers access to the space epic more than six years after its theatrical release (via ComicBook.com).

    Directed by James Gray, Ad Astra was released in theaters in 2019 and centers on astronaut Roy McBride, portrayed by Pitt. McBride is assigned to a high-risk mission across the solar system following a series of unexplained energy surges that threaten the earth. The disturbances are believed to be linked to a long-abandoned expedition to Neptune, led decades earlier by Roy’s father, Clifford McBride, who was presumed lost in space.

    The cast also includes Ruth Negga as Helen Lantos, Liv Tyler as Eve McBride, and Donald Sutherland as Colonel Thomas Pruitt, among others. Upon release, Ad Astra received generally positive reviews from critics. It holds an 83 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 398 reviews. Audience reception was less favorable, with a 40 percent Popcornmeter score. 

    Julian Singleton of Cinapse wrote, “It’s an ambitious film that’s wonderfully about how ambition condemns us — and instead encourages us to recognize the beauty that we turn away from in the name of what’s ‘essential.’”

    The iconic 1984 musical drama Footloose, led by Kevin Bacon, will soon be available for streaming on Paramount+ in the coming weeks. The film, which centers on a teenager’s clash with a small town’s strict ban on dancing and rock music, remains a cult classic from ’80s cinema. It will expectably receive renewed attention with its upcoming streaming debut. 

    Paramount+ has confirmed that it is adding the 1984 musical drama Footloose to its streaming library early next month.

    According to ComicBook.com, the Kevin Bacon film is scheduled to begin streaming on the platform on January 1, 2026.

    Directed by Herbert Ross and written by Dean Pitchford, Footloose centers on Ren McCormack, a teenager who moves from Chicago to the small town of Bomont. Upon arriving, he discovers that local authorities have banned dancing and rock music, a rule enforced by the town’s conservative leadership. The restrictions leave Ren and his peers frustrated, particularly as they attempt to navigate adolescence in a tightly controlled environment.

    Ren’s efforts to adjust to life in Bomont soon draw him into a clash between the town’s younger residents and its leadership. Meanwhile, his relationship with Ariel Moore, the daughter of Reverend Shaw Moore, further adds to the tension. With help from friends, Ren begins to challenge the ban that controls the community.

    Apart from Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormack, the film features Lori Singer as Ariel Moore, with John Lithgow portraying Reverend Shaw Moore. The cast also includes Dianne Wiest, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Chris Penn.

    While Footloose received mixed critical reviews, it currently holds a 55 percent Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 47 reviews. The film also holds a stronger 71 percent Popcornmeter score. 

    Upon its original release, Footloose proved to be a significant box office success. It earned over $80 million worldwide, as per Box Office Mojo. Over the decades, it has garnered a cult following, with a 1998 stage musical and a 2011 remake adding to its legacy.

  • How TV Shows Like ‘Mo’ and ‘Muslim Matchmaker’ Allow Arab and Muslim Americans to Tell Their Stories

    COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Whether it’s stand-up comedy specials or a dramedy series, when Muslim American Mo Amer sets out to create, he writes what he knows.

    The comedian, writer and actor of Palestinian descent has received critical acclaim for it, too. The second season of Amer’s “Mo” documents Mo Najjar and his family’s tumultuous journey reaching asylum in the United States as Palestinian refugees.

    Amer’s show is part of an ongoing wave of television from Arab American and Muslim American creators who are telling nuanced, complicated stories about identity without falling into stereotypes that Western media has historically portrayed.

    “Whenever you want to make a grounded show that feels very real and authentic to the story and their cultural background, you write to that,” Amer told The Associated Press. “And once you do that, it just feels very natural, and when you accomplish that, other people can see themselves very easily.”

    At the start of its second season, viewers find Najjar running a falafel taco stand in Mexico after he was locked in a van transporting stolen olive trees across the U.S.-Mexico border. Najjar was trying to retrieve the olive trees and return them to the farm where he, his mother and brother are attempting to build an olive oil business.

    Both seasons of “Mo” were smash hits on Netflix. The first season was awarded a Peabody. His third comedy special on Netflix, “Mo Amer: Wild World,” premiered in October.

    Narratively, the second season ends before the Hamas attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, but the series itself doesn’t shy away from addressing Israeli-Palestinian relations, the ongoing conflict in Gaza or what it’s like for asylum seekers detained in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers.

    In addition to “Mo,” shows like “Muslim Matchmaker,” hosted by matchmakers Hoda Abrahim and Yasmin Elhady, connect Muslim Americans from around the country with the goal of finding a spouse.

    The animated series, “#1 Happy Family USA,” created by Ramy Youssef, who worked with Amer to create “Mo,” and Pam Brady, follows an Egyptian American Muslim family navigating life in New Jersey after the 9/11 terrorists attack in New York.


    Current events have an influence

    The key to understanding the ways in which Arab or Muslim Americans have been represented on screen is to be aware of the “historical, political, cultural and social contexts” in which the content was created, said Sahar Mohamed Khamis, a University of Maryland professor who studies Arab and Muslim representation in media.

    After the 9/11 attacks, Arabs and Muslims became the villains in many American films and TV shows. The ethnic background of Arabs and the religion of Islam were portrayed as synonymous, too, Khamis said. The villain, Khamis said, is often a man with brown skin with an Arab-sounding name.

    A show like “Muslim Matchmaker” flips this narrative on its head, Elhady said, by showing the ethnic diversity of Muslim Americans.

    “It’s really important to have shows that show us as everyday Americans,” said Elhady, who is Egyptian and Libyan American, “but also as people that live in different places and have kind of sometimes dual realities and a foot in the East and a foot in the West and the reality of really negotiating that context.”

    Before 9/11, people living in the Middle East were often portrayed to Western audiences as exotic beings, living in tents in the desert and riding camels. Women often had little to no agency in these media depictions and were “confined to the harem” — a secluded location for women in a traditional Muslim home.

    This idea, Khamis said, harkens back to the term “orientalism,” which Palestinian American academic, political activist and literary critic Edward Said coined in his 1978 book of the same name.

    Khamis said, pointing to countries like Britain and France, the portrayal in media of people from the region was “created and manufactured, not by the people themselves, but through the gaze of an outsider. The outsiders in this case, he said, were the colonial/imperialist powers that were actually controlling these lands for long periods of time.”

    Among those who study the ways Arabs have been depicted on Western television, a common critique is that the characters are “bombers, billionaires or belly dancers,” she said.


    The limits of representation

    Sanaz Alesafar, executive director of Storyline Partners and an Iranian American, said she has seen some “wins” with regard to Arab representation in Hollywood, noting the success of “Mo,” “Muslim Matchmaker” and “#1 Happy Family USA.” Storyline Partners helps writers, showrunners, executives and creators check the historical and cultural backgrounds of their characters and narratives to assure they’re represented fairly and that one creator’s ideas don’t infringe upon another’s.

    Alesafar argues there is still a need for diverse stories told about people living in the Middle East and the English-speaking diaspora, written and produced by people from those backgrounds.

    “In the popular imagination and popular culture, we’re still siloed in really harmful ways,” she said. “Yes, we’re having these wins and these are incredible, but that decision-making and centers of power still are relegating us to these tropes and these stereotypes.”

    Deana Nassar, an Egyptian American who is head of creative talent at film production company Alamiya Filmed Entertainment, said it’s important for her children to see themselves reflected on screen “for their own self image.” Nassar said she would like to see a diverse group of people in decision-making roles in Hollywood. Without that, it’s “a clear indication that representation is just not going to get us all the way there,” she said.

    Representation can impact audiences’ opinions on public policy, too, according to a recent study by the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding. Results showed that the participants who witnessed positive representation of Muslims were less likely to support anti-democratic and anti-Muslim policies compared to those who viewed negative representations.

    For Amer, limitations to representation come from the decision-makers who greenlight projects, not from creators. He said the success of shows like his and others are a “start,” but he wants to see more industry recognition for his work and the work of others like him.

    “That’s the thing, like just keep writing, that’s all it’s about,” he said. “Just keep creating and keep making and thankfully I have a really deep well for that, so I’m very excited about the next things,” he said.

    Anaconda’s mid-credits scene at the end brings back original franchise star

    Anaconda’s mid-credits scene features a montage showing the fates of the film’s characters. The scene reveals that Ice Cube, one of the original film’s stars, who saved the main characters from the anaconda and went to rescue the other original stars — Jennifer Lopez and Eric Stoltz — from the creature, survived. While Stoltz’s fate is left unanswered, Lopez’s survival is confirmed, and she later appears in the film’s final scene.

    Lopez visits Doug at his home and informs him that she liked the low-budget version of the film he made. She then offers him the opportunity to direct another Anaconda film that she is doing, causing Doug to faint.

    Meanwhile, the post-credits scene reveals that Carlos, the snake handler hired by Griff and Doug for their film and believed to be killed by the anaconda in the first half, is alive.

    In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Gormican revealed that Lopez’s cameo was “a product of reshoots.” He added that they tried to include Lopez in principal photography, but couldn’t “coordinate” schedules. “We had always wanted a version of her to come in. And we talked about it and talked about it and talked about it. I was finally able to shoot her cameo a month ago on November 17. It was the very last thing we did,” he further stated.

    Gormican continued, “I was finishing up my final mix when I went to shoot it, and I dropped it into this [mid-credit] sequence that I was having built to accommodate it. I never thought it was going to ultimately materialize, but it did, and we put it together.” The director further noted that although Lopez’s cameo’s inclusion “happened very, very late in the game,” the idea for it was conceived long ago.

  • Jimmy Kimmel Jokes About Fascism in an ‘Alternative Christmas Message’ for Britain

    LONDON (AP) — Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump as he warned Thursday about the rise of fascism in an address to U.K. viewers dubbed “The Alternative Christmas Message.”

    The message, aired on Channel 4 on Christmas day, reflected on the impact from the second term in office for Trump, who Kimmel said acts like he’s a king.

    “From a fascism perspective, this has been a really great year,” he said. “Tyranny is booming over here.”

    The channel began a tradition of airing an alternative Christmas message in 1993, as a counterpart to the British monarch’s annual televised address to the nation. Channel 4 said the message is often a thought-provoking and personal reflection pertinent to the events of the year.

    The comedian has skewered Trump since returning to the air after ABC indefinitely suspended the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” show in September following criticism of comments the host made over the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

    Kimmel made remarks in reference to the reaction to Kirk’s shooting suggesting that many Trump supporters were trying to capitalize on the death.

    Trump celebrated the suspension of the veteran late-night comic and his frequent critic, calling it “great news for America.” He also called for other late night hosts to be fired.

    The incident, one of Trump’s many disputes and legal battles waged with the media, drew widespread concerns about freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

    Hundreds of leading Hollywood stars and others in the entertainment industry urged Americans to “fight to defend and preserve our constitutionally protected rights.” The show returned to the air less than a week later.

    Kimmel told the U.K. audience that a Christmas miracle had happened in September when millions of people — some who hated his show — had spoken up for free speech.

    “We won, the president lost, and now I’m back on the air every night giving the most powerful politician on earth a right and richly deserved bollocking,” he said.

    Channel 4 previously invited whistle-blower Edward Snowden and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to deliver the alternative Christmas message.

    Kimmel, who said he didn’t expect Brits to know who he was, warned that silencing critics is not just something that happens in Russia or North Korea.

    Despite the split that led to the American Revolution 250 years ago, he said the two nations still shared a special relationship and urged the U.K. not to give up on the U.S. as it was “going through a bit of a wobble right now.”

    “Here in the United States right now, we are both figuratively and literally tearing down the structures of our democracy from the free press to science to medicine to judicial independence to the actual White House itself,” Kimmel said, in reference to demolition of the building’s East Wing. “We are a right mess, and we know this is also affecting you, and I just wanted to say sorry.”

  • Melora Hardin Details Why She Was Fired From Back to the Future

    The Office’s Melora Hardin detailed the aftermath of being fired from Back to the Future after shooting weeks of footage as Marty McFly’s love interest.

    Back to the Future was a huge disappointment. I was 17, you know. I burst into tears,” Hardin, 58, told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on Monday, December 22. “It was very sad. There were quite a few of those that I remember, you know, things that never really got made. But that I remember being very tough.”

    Hardin had initially been cast in the role of Jennifer Parker opposite Eric Stoltz’s Marty for the 1985 sci-fi film. But when Stoltz was let go and replaced by Michael J. Fox, Hardin found herself also getting the boot, thanks to having a few inches of height on the Family Ties star.

    “It was apparently the two female executives at the time that thought that it was emasculating for their lead male character to be in scenes with a woman that was taller than him,” Hardin claimed to EW earlier this year. She noted, however, that things ultimately turned out for the best. “If I had done it, I’m sure it would have all gone in a different way. I wouldn’t have done The Office,” she told the outlet at the time.

    While speaking to EW on Monday, Hardin doubled down on her positive outlook, explaining that it was essential to have “failed more than you’ve succeeded” in order to get where she is in the industry. “I think people don’t realize that when they look at it from the outside — you have to really be somebody who’s comfortable with failure, and with putting yourself on the line all the time,” she said. “That failure doesn’t mean anything about you. You just have to fail better, and keep failing better … to be able to really weather this career choice.”

    As for the role of Jennifer, Claudia Wells was ultimately cast in the role before Elisabeth Shue took over the part for the subsequent sequels. Fox, meanwhile, starred in all three of blockbusters.

    In his 2025 memoir, Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum, Fox revealed that he was the original choice for Marty but NBC blocked him from taking the role, wanting him to instead concentrate on his sitcom. But when Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis and cowriter Bob Gale weren’t convinced that Stoltz was right for the part due to his more dramatic acting approach, they swung back to Fox.

    “Unfortunately, the dailies were disappointing,” Fox wrote of Stoltz’s early version of Back to the Future. “Eric was an immensely talented actor, but the creative team felt that he just wasn’t the right fit for Marty McFly.”

    Stoltz, for his part, has kept largely silent on the casting drama over the years, but did subtly address the situation during a 2007 interview with Moviehole.

    “I rarely look back, if at all, but in retrospect, I think just getting through that difficult period helped me realize how freeing it really was,” he said. “I went back to acting school, I moved to Europe, I did some plays in New York and I actually invested in myself in a way that was much healthier for me. I would’ve been unable to walk down the street! It’s a whole different life. I was lucky in that way.”

  • The Grammys Split the Country Album Category Into Traditional and Contemporary. It Might Be Great

    NEW YORK (AP) — Flashback to February. It’s the 2025 Grammys, and Beyoncé has made history. Not only was she finally awarded the top prize of album of the year, but she also became the first Black woman to win best country album, for “Cowboy Carter.” Recent changes by the Recording Academy have made it even more monumental: She might be the last person to ever win the award.

    In June, the Academy announced that the Grammys’ country album title was splitting into two categories. A new award was created, traditional country album. The preexisting country album category has been redefined and is now contemporary country album, reflecting the genre’s ongoing sonic evolutions.

    Here’s everything you need to know about the change — and what it could signify in the future.


    From “Cowboy Carter” to now

    Charles L. Hughes, Rhodes College professor and author of “Country Soul,” says Beyoncé’s victory was a welcomed surprise, despite being obviously worthy. That’s because her album inspired a larger conversation about reclamation, standing in opposition to the music industry’s rigid power structures and “indicated how significant this historical question remains of whether or not Black folks have equal access to success in a genre of music that bears such strong Black influences and has from the very beginning,” Hughes said.

    He believes the decision to alter the country album categories was not in direct response to her win — “I think it is a more complicated story,” he says — but the timing might’ve been less than ideal, emboldening fans to view it as reactionary. He hopes the changes will open the category to more diversity of sounds and “whether this leads to a broader opening and opportunity for Black artists, especially Black women in country music,” he posits.

    Francesca T. Royster, a DePaul University professor and author of “Black Country Music: Listening for Revolutions,” views Beyoncé’s victory as positively connected to this change. She wonders if artists — particularly artists of color, who never had their music recognized in country music categories, think of artists like “Millie Jackson or Candi Staton, Bobby Womack” — would now see their work recognized. “Having these two categories just allows for more experimentation and maybe less of a double standard,” she says, “in terms of artists who are often held to higher standards to conform to, or be recognizable as, meeting an idea about what country music is.”

    “It makes sense that the Grammy categories for country would become a little bit more expansive,” she says, “because I think the music is more expansive and the audience is also more expansive than it’s ever been.”


    Traditional vs. contemporary

    According to the Recording Academy’s rule book, the traditional country category is defined by “country recordings that adhere to the more traditional sound structures of the country genre, including rhythm and singing style, lyrical content, as well as traditional country instrumentation.”

    Those are: acoustic guitar, steel guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, piano, electric guitar and live drums. This is also where subgenres like outlaw country, Western and Western swing would fit.

    The contemporary country category description is a bit more conceptual. The rule book states that albums eligible in this category “utilize a stylistic intention, song structure, lyrical content, and/or musical presentation to create a sensibility that reflects the broad spectrum of contemporary country style and culture.”

    The hope is that those titles are “relevant to the legacy of country music’s culture, while also engaging in more contemporary music forms.”

    The questions Hughes poses: “Whose tradition are we talking about?” And how is “country music’s culture” defined?

    “It’s almost tautology. ‘Well, it’s traditional country if it sounds like traditional country,’” he says.

    In that reading, contemporary country could simply account for everything else.

    Royster says both categories seem to “speak to an aesthetic as well as political agenda, many agendas.” To her, the traditional category would appeal to artists who believe that “this is a past form that needs to … continue to be recognized and respected.” Similarly, the contemporary category is “linked to the culture of country but is also expansive.”

    “In both cases, there’s a kind of story behind the story.”

    Adding a new genre category is not unique to country music. Consider a sister genre, R&B. In 1999, the Recording Academy also introduced a traditional category to the R&B field to spotlight artists who chose to hybridize the genre as well as those who prefer nostalgic structures.

    It didn’t stay stagnant from there: In 2021, the Academy changed the best urban contemporary album category to best progressive R&B album, to spotlight those records that weave R&B with other genres.

    In the traditional category, it is Charley Crockett’s “Dollar a Day,” Lukas Nelson’s “American Romance,” Willie Nelson’s “Oh What a Beautiful World,” Margo Price’s “Hard Headed Woman,” and Zach Top’s “Ain’t In It For My Health.”

    Royster wonders if with this first year of nominees, “there’s less risk in terms of recognizing the kind of ‘country-ness’ of these artists.” Royster views the lineup as “artists (whose) country creds would still be recognized even if they’re also bringing in other elements. I would hope in the future there might be more room in the category.”

    For Hughes, the nominees further confuse the distinctions. Consider this example: Zach Top’s album borrows heavily from George Strait’s sound, which emerged in the ‘70s as a mesh of honky-tonk traditions and contemporary country. Hip-hop also emerged in the ’70s. They were simultaneous. “But I have a feeling we won’t be seeing a lot of hip-hop-inspired artists in the traditional category,” he says.

    But that doesn’t mean it might not evolve in the future. “If the Grammys fundamentally exist to give people recognition,” he says, “The more, the merrier.”


    What country musicians say

    “Anytime the pipe widens, more water gets through. And this was the pipe widening, baby,” Jelly Roll, who is nominated in the inaugural best contemporary country album category, told The Associated Press. “I love it. I’m happy. I’m a fan of both sides. It encourages me to maybe make a traditional country album one day, you know? So, this is cool.”

    Three-time Grammy award winner Brad Paisley has a similar stance: There’s a benefit to having more country music recognitions.

    “Awards are really tools to sort of get awareness for something that you made, you know?” he said. “They’re never the goal. It’s always more like, ‘Oh, cool, this might make more people listen to it.’ … If this means they got to make more little gold gramophone statues to give out, and two people get them versus one, great.”

    That said: Paisley’s not sure which category he would fall into, or if the division could color an artist’s creative decisions. “I’d almost have to think it through like, ‘No, no, we’re going for the Grammy on this. I better not do this on this record or something.’ But hopefully that doesn’t ever enter into it,” he says.

    Hopefully, it’s just a panel decided who belongs in which category, “and then two people get to go home happy versus one. And that’s good in my book,” he said.

  • Bowen Yang Reveals What Made Him Cry During ‘Saturday Night Live’ Exit

    Bowen Yang opened up about the emotional rollercoaster he experienced while saying goodbye to Saturday Night Live.

    Yang, 35, took to Instagram on Sunday, December 21, to reflect on his final SNL cast appearance that aired one night prior. “Slightly perilous but then reached the full sublime,” Yang wrote in an Instagram Story. It was accompanied by footage from the video game Mario Kart World where a cow flipped as he rode Rainbow Road, with Yang captioning the clip: “All day felt like this yesterday.”

    The comedian continued with an explanation of what moved him to tears during his final SNL sketch alongside guest host Ariana Grande and musical guest Cher. “A train of waving friends riding alongside??? It was seeing and hearing from so many people whose love overwhelmed me to tears,” Yang wrote. “I will never experience anything like that in my life.”

    Yang was seen crying during a holiday travel-themed sketch when his Wicked: For Good costar, 32, and Cher, 79, serenaded him with the Christmas song “Please Come Home for Christmas.” The sketch made reference to the comedian’s departure from SNL after seven seasons.

    “I can’t believe you’re retiring,” Grande told Yang during the performance, to which Yang responded: “I just wanted to go out on top.”

    Grande then quipped, “Everyone knows you’re a bottom, honey.”

    An additional Instagram Story from Yang on Sunday night included a photo of him standing inside his dressing room which had been decorated with balloons and bunting that read ‘Congrats.” Yang captioned the shot, “Slowly responding to messages. Thank you for being so kind.”

    Another Instagram Story featured a photo of Grande and Yang together with the singer leaning her head on her friend’s shoulder. “I can’t believe there are 492 NEW ways @arianagrande has changed my life after last night,” Yang wrote before adding a black-and-white image of the pair hugging backstage.

    News of Yang’s departure from SNL broke on Friday, December 19, with Yang addressing the news via his Instagram grid one day later. “I loved working at SNL, and most of all I loved the people. I was there at a time when many things in the world started to seem futile, but working at 30 rock taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile,” he wrote at the time. “I’m grateful for every minute of my time there. I learned about myself (bad with wigs). I learned about others (generous, vulnerable, hot). I learned that human error can be nothing but correct. I learned that comedy is mostly logistics and that it will usually fail until it doesn’t, which is the besssst.”

    After Grande’s hosting duties were over, she took to her own Instagram Stories to pay tribute to Yang. “I love you more than words can say and I am just so very proud of you and all of the eggnog you’ve made over the years,” she wrote on Sunday alongside footage of Yang performing the final live skit.

    Grande continued, “It meant more than words can say to have been there for your sendoff last night. Happy trails, my brilliant and beautiful friend.”
