‘Welcome to the O.C.’ Book Bombshells: Adam Brody’s Disdain, More

The O.C. became an instant phenomenon the moment it premiered in 2003 — and  found itself struggling to stay afloat almost just as quickly.

The series, which ran for four seasons on Fox, followed 16-year-old Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) as he’s taken in by well-intentioned lawyer Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher) and his prominent Newport Beach, California family. As Ryan finds a new best friend in Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) and love interest in next-door neighbor Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton), he also discovers the complicated and often dangerous seedy underbelly of life in Orange County.

Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History, which is written by Alan Sepinwall, The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz and executive producer Stephanie Savage, gives a glimpse behind the scenes of the iconic series, from the show’s meteoric rise to its eventual downfall.

An immediate success that catapulted its cast into A-list stardom, The O.C. eventually struggled to follow up its critically acclaimed first season. From a green showrunner and demands from the network to actors who grew increasingly unhappy with their roles, The O.C. faced a myriad of obstacles but remains one of the most beloved teen dramas today.

Welcome to The O.C.! Ben McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson were catapulted to fame while starring on the hit teen drama. The Fox series ran from August 2003 to February 2007 and focused on the lives of affluent teenagers in Newport Beach, California. McKenzie (Ryan Atwood), Brody (Seth Cohen), Barton (Marissa Cooper), Bilson […]

Keep scrolling for all the biggest bombshells from Welcome to the O.C.: An Oral History:

Adam Brody’s Less Than Stellar Audition

No one was a fan of Brody’s first audition, where casting director Patrick Rush said he “ad-libbed” his scenes and was “obnoxious” and “disrespectful” of the material. Despite Schwartz thinking the audition “sucked,” Rush brought Brody back a second time to try again, and Seth Cohen was born.

“He came back, and actually read the part as written and put some effort into it. And it was amazing,” Savage said.

    Not Everyone Wanted Mischa Barton

Despite Schwartz, Savage and the other producers loving Barton’s audition, Warner Bros. executives were gunning for a different actress to take up the role of Marissa Cooper: Olivia Wilde.

Susan Rovner, a Warner Bros. programming executive at the time, shared that she was “Team Olivia” from the jump and didn’t “get” Barton’s appeal. Ultimately, however, the studio let the producers make the final call, which Rovner said was “the right choice.”

Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody’s Road to Romance

Rachel Bilson, who portrayed Summer Roberts on the series, revealed that she knew Brody before shooting The O.C. pilot because he had “casually dated” one of her friends. She remembered thinking he was “cute and funny” but also “kind of a dick” before spending more time with him and understanding his sense of humor.

After the pair both split from their respective partners during season 1, Bilson said their romance “grew into itself” over time. During season 2, she admitted to being jealous of Brody’s character hooking up with Wilde, who joined as Alex.

Mischa Barton and Chris Carmack’s Awkward 1st Love Scene

Chris Carmack, who portrayed Marissa’s cheating (but later beloved) boyfriend Luke, recalled shooting his first “in-bed” love scene with Barton. Carmack remembered being “scantily clad” with Barton under the covers and wanting to make her feel “comfortable” despite there being so many crew members around.

The awkwardness escalated, however, when Barton’s mom showed up at the rehearsal and Carmack rolled over to see Barton’s mom “standing right behind” him during the “uncomfortable” moment.

Ultimately, Carmack said “everything was fine” and he only has fond memories of the scene. “Good for Mischa’s mom, for looking out for her daughter. I think she deserves some respect for that,” he added.

Marissa Almost Got Killed Off in Season 1

The real reason Marissa OD’d during the 7th episode of the series? The network wasn’t sure they wanted to keep Barton as the lead.

“Fox wanted to have the ability to make a casting change,” Schwartz explained. When Barton “broke out with the public” soon after The O.C. premiered, she remained “safe” on the show for three seasons.

Savage, meanwhile, didn’t remember any real writer’s room conversations about potentially killing the character off early. “I don’t think we ever broke that story or even really talked about that story,” she said.

Everyone Liked the Seth and Marissa Dynamic — Especially Adam Brody

Despite Seth and Summer and Ryan and Marissa being the show’s two major romantic couples, the writers considered developing a different pairing.

“We left something on the table with Seth and Marissa,” Schwartz shared, noting that there’s a “hint” of a potential bond between the characters at the start of season 2. “We certainly never went there romantically between them. But there was definitely more to mine even on a friendship level with them.”

Brody was fully on board with more scenes opposite Barton, calling the relationship between the two next-door neighbors both “cool” and filled with awkward potential. “That was a nice dynamic that I could have seen more of,” he said.

    Brodymania Was Very Real

Bilson recalled leaving then-boyfriend Brody behind at TRL because they were being “swarmed by a mass mob” of fans, of which she was rescued from by two unlikely heroes: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

“The Olsen twins rescued me and threw me in their car,” Bilson recalled. “I left Brody behind because I was so nervous and didn’t know what to do. And they were like, ‘Don’t you need to get your boyfriend?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, we’ve got to go get him.’ He was being mobbed.”

Brody, meanwhile, recalled a woman “grabbing” him and “hooking up” with him one time, telling him, “Welcome to Hollywood.” He called the bizarre moment an “acknowledgment of a stature change” that could be considered “gross” but one he remembers as “innocent and joyful.”

Kelly Rowan Was the Object of Affection

Melinda Clarke, who portrayed Marissa’s mom, Julie Cooper, revealed that Kelly Rowan — who starred as Cohen matriarch Kirsten Cowan — was single while filming the show and was often flirted with by every person every on set including Brody, Gallagher and Tate Donovan, who played Marissa’s dad, Jimmy Cooper.

“She’s also the giggliest on set,” Clarke explained. “She would giggle the most, and they could break her up.”

The Love Triangle Between Seth, Summer and Anna Wasn’t Exactly Fiction

According to Samaire Armstrong, who played Seth’s alternative love interest Anna, she and Brody knew each other prior to The O.C. from an acting class. She and Bilson, meanwhile, shared the same commercial agent.

Bilson claimed that while she and Armstong were “always friendly” on set, there was a “weird underlying competitiveness” between them. She noted that at the time, she felt Armstrong “had a crush” on Brody despite having a boyfriend.

“Sometimes life imitates art,” Bilson said. “We were always friends and friendly, but then there was always this weird undertone.”

Armstong agreed that there was “definitely” a triangle happening – but not exactly a romantic one like their characters on screen.

“[It was] like, ‘Oh, there’s my friend with my other friend. They’re dating and what, am I the third wheel? Should I come back later?’” Armstrong quipped about her relationship with Brody and Bilson. “It was art imitating life in many ways, and that part was not lost on us.”

The Actor Who Played Eddie Had Issues With His Role

Eddie, Theresa’s (Navlata “Navi” Rawat) boyfriend, was portrayed by Eric Balfour. While the character was supposed to be abusive, Schwartz shared that Balfour was too uncomfortable playing that role in that way and exited the show, leading to Theresa and Ryan’s pregnancy story line (a least favorite among fans).

Differing Opinions on Marissa’s Sexual Assault Story Line

While Savage recalled Barton being “excited” about the story line in which Ryan’s brother Trey (Logan Marshall-Green) gets high and tries to assault Marissa, crediting Barton feeling more “comfortable” in the dramatic plots, Barton remembers the situation differently.

“There were varying degrees of how comfortable that stuff made me or didn’t make me,” Barton shared, calling the actual assault scene on the beach particularly uncomfortable for “obvious reasons.”

The Younger Actors Were Over Playing High School Kids By Season 3

“We were very aware in season 3 of how disliked the scripts were, especially by the kids,” Clarke recalled, saying there was a “general understanding on set” that Brody and McKenzie had issues with being “grown men” playing high school students.

… Actually, Everyone Was Over It By Season 3

Barton claimed that by the third season, actors were getting “handed pages from episodes that weren’t even written yet,” adding that there was really “nothing” they could do when writers were “doubling up” on episodes.

“I said stuff to Stephanie and Josh,” Barton claimed. “But that’s the writers’ room’s responsibility, and I’m pretty sure it fell on deaf ears, to be honest.”

McKenzie, meanwhile, said that the “irony” of season 3 was that the kids started to want “less” time on screen, while the adult actors wanted “more” and the show “could not accommodate either of those desires.” McKenzie noted that he was “appreciative” of the “incredible opportunity” The O.C. had given him but had a “restlessness” to pursue other projects.

Schwartz noted that people on the show were “not getting along great” by season 3 and that the “chemistry had soured” between actors.

“We were no longer having fun making the show — myself included,” he said, taking responsibility for the breakdown. “And again, I should have sat everybody down, and had individual conversations, and instead I just hid and tried to ride it out.”

… But No One Was As Over It As Adam Brody

Brody shared that he began to get “bored” by the show and the character of Seth, so he would often “economize” reading his scripts. He admitted that occasionally, he would even play a game with himself and see how much of the episode he could understand by only reading his own lines.

By season 3, Brody’s lack of effort became so notable, that the writers wrote him as being addicted to weed to accommodate the change in Seth’s behavior.

“Brody just changed his delivery, his investment in it,” Schwartz explained. “His style shifted to such a degree that we felt like we needed to account for it creatively.” He added, “It’s the kind of storyline that we would have laughed at in Season 1.”

While Brody was itching to move on, he maintained that he was always “polite to everyone,” didn’t “keep people waiting” and “liked the directors and the crew.” He noted that he would never “scream and yell” or say “anything f—king mean” but did let his “distaste” for the later episodes of the series be known, which he is “not proud” of.

McKenzie said Brody was “not shy” about his unhappiness and the energy became an “amorphous” thing. “Everyone gets in the feisty, feisty mood,” he said. “[It was] a challenge, and frustrating, and all those sorts of things.”

Autumn Reeser, who became a series regular during season 4 as Taylor Townsend, said she was “disappointed” by Brody’s behavior and had hoped to find “more camaraderie” with someone she thought of as a “fantastic” actor, despite having “compassion” for him at the time.

“Adam’s a real artist and wanted the chance to stretch,” she said. “And he was not feeling like he was getting that.”

Sebastian Stan Auditioned for the Cursed Role of Johnny

Despite Stan auditioning for the role of Johnny, which eventually went to Ryan Donowho, Schwartz and the other producers had no recollection of seeing Stan’s tape and didn’t even test him. He later joined Gossip Girl, a different Schwartz and Savage project, as Carter Basen.

(Chris Pine also auditioned for Ryan, but didn’t get the role due to his bad skin, while ‘80s teen icon Andrew McCarthy was in the mix to portray Jimmy Cooper.)

    The Unraveling of Marissa Cooper

Barton revealed there were years when she would only have “six days” off of work, as she was busy promoting the show, doing press and touring when she wasn’t actually on set. Bilson, meanwhile, said she felt there was “pressure” from Barton’s mom for the actress to be “doing a lot.”

“I think it was probably too much for this teenager to be doing as much as she had to do,” Bilson said, saying that Barton still managed to do it gracefully. She added that while Barton’s mom was “always nice” to her, she was a “stage mom” who had a “make sure Summer doesn’t have more things to do or say than Marissa vibe.”

“Mischa definitely had a level of unhappiness, which, again, if we had dealt with it directly, maybe we could have worked together,” Savage said, while Schwartz noted that Barton wanted to attend college.

Despite her growing exhaustion, those involved with the show said Barton always maintained her professionalism.

“She would always come in, hit the mark, say the lines, deliver the performance. I remember her as being in many ways the most reliable of the four kids,” executive producer Bob DiLaurentis recalled. “She had no problems with anything. She didn’t ask for a line to be changed. She just came in and did her job like a professional.”

California, here they come! Newport Beach’s coolest teens went through plenty of romantic drama on The O.C., but so did their real-life counterparts. The show documented the lives of Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie), Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton), Seth Cohen (Adam Brody), Summer Roberts (Rachel Bilson) and their parents, all of whom lived in the wealthy […]

    Marissa’s Death Remains a Regret

Despite Schwartz believing at the time that killing off Marissa was something the show “had to do” for creative and business reasons, he said that there are “a lot of dynamics” they could have explored instead in order for The O.C. to reinvent itself.

Barton said it was a “little bit of a bummer” to be killed off, but also felt it was an “inevitable” end for Marissa, who was “doing too much” as a character. “I think they ran out of places for her to go,” she said. “It was not the best thing in the world, [but] there wasn’t much you could do at that point. It was either she could sail off into the sunset, or die.”

Barton added that the crew was “quite upset” about her exit and it was “pretty emotional” filming her final days due to the “close bonds” she had formed with everyone. “I just really wanted to do the character justice at the end of it,” she said, calling her death scene an “intense shoot.”

McKenzie also remembered Barton being “upset” before shooting the death scene, in which Ryan carries Marissa’s dying body away from an exploding car.

“She was younger, so she was dealing with this whole mess of feelings that we were all dealing with to some degree, but hers were probably even more acute,” he explained, adding that it did become a situation that ultimately “had to give.”

McKenzie Did Have Fun With His Next Love Interest, Taylor

McKenzie said that the addition of Reeser to the cast — and Ryan and Taylor’s subsequent romance — made season 4 feel “lighter” due to Reeser’s “lovely” and “sunny disposition.”

“I have to say, just from the doing of it, the doing of [season 4] was more fun, and honestly more fitting with I think what the show really was,” McKenzie shared, adding that he “appreciated being able to tell a joke or two.”

Bilson and Brody Filmed Their Characters’ Wedding … After They Broke Up

Bilson said that the series finale, in which Seth and Summer tie the knot, was filmed shortly after she and Brody split in real life. In order to avoid the “bizarre” situation of fake marrying her ex, she asked for Summer’s wedding dress to be something she would “never” wear in real life.

“When you’re that age, you think you’re going to be with that person forever,” she said of her romance with Brody. “And I remember feeling like, I don’t want to wear something that I would ever wear for my own wedding. That feels weird.”

  • It’s Official: Gareth Whitton Is Now the First Dessert Master of Australia – POPSUGAR Australia

It’s Official: Gareth Whitton Is Now the First Dessert Master of Australia – POPSUGAR Australia

“MasterChef: Dessert Masters” has crowned Gareth Whitton as its 2023 winner. Tonight, we watched as our three finalists — Jess Liemantara, Reynold Poernomo, and Gareth — battle in two rounds of pure, sugar-fuelled glory.

The three contestants put their skills to the test in an attempt to win $100,000 and claim the title of Australia’s bonafide Dessert Master. However, it was Gareth who rose through the ranks to the top.

What Happened in the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Finale?

The “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” finale began with Reynold, Gareth, and Jess all pitted against each other in a challenge. They had to plan, create, and serve a two-course menu that would satisfy 15 people. These dishes would then be judged by the two hosts, Melissa Leong and Amaury Guichon.

    Course One

To kick things off, Reynold created a dish called Floral. This dessert was a mix of elderberry sake and strawberry puree on top of a jasmine gelato.

When the judges tasted this dish, they were very impressed.

“It’s got a lush and creamy texture,” Mellisa noted.

“The jasmine gelato is silky smooth,” Amaury added.

Meanwhile, Jess made an incredibly ambitious dessert. Her dessert was a strawberry chiboust. By the way, a chiboust is a light pastry which is filled with folded meringue.

However, the two judges were not as impressed with this dish. They felt that its presentation was rushed.

Last but not least, Gareth made a rhubarb tart. However, this was no ordinary tart. This tart was served with a raspberry jam and some pistachio ice cream.

The person who struggled most with the first course was Gareth. This is because he accidentally cut himself right before serving time. His hand was covered in blood, and he went whiter than a ghost.

“I need a glove,” Gareth called as washed his hand underwater.

“This is not the best of times for this to happen.”

Luckily though, the two judges still enjoyed this dessert.

“There is a bite. There is texture,” Amaury exploded, “I love the sponge.”

“This is very, very solid cooking from Gareth,” Melissa said.

    Course Two

Reyonld’s second dish was made of pieces of honeycomb with a citrus profile. This piece of honeycomb came with creamy parfait.

When the two judges tried this dish, they disagreed. Melissa found this to be artful and elegant. Amaury thought that the parfait was too frozen.

But what did Jess whip up? Well, she made strawberry mousse that was topped with white chocolate flowers, served with a side of raspberry sorbet. However, in a tragic twist, this sorbet was too hard.

“The sorbet is a little too grainy,” Amaury said.

“I think she did an incredible job,” Melissa disagreed again.

For a second course, Gareth made a wattleseed and chocolate mousse. It was yet another dish that the judges devoured.

“It’s not too sweet, but it’s not overly bitter,” Amaury explained.

    “This is a Dessert Master.”

    The “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Winner

During the judging Amaury and Melissa put Jess in last place, Reynold in second, and Gareth in first. This made Gareth Australia’s first ever Dessert Master. Unsurprisingly, he was lost for words.

“Surreal,” Gareth exclaimed. “I never expected to end up in the finale.”

    A “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Reflection

This “MasterChef” finale was the perfect cherry on this sundae of a season. Everyone has loved the dessert-focused episodes and all the iconic faces they brought back. From Anna Polyviou to Adriano Zumbo, the cast of this season was stacked.

Even the show’s two judges, Melissa Leong and Amaury Guichon, were stoked with how “Dessert Master”s has shaped up. In fact, they were excited about this season before it officially kicked off.

“Desserts have the capacity to be magical,” Leong said before the premiere. “I’m excited to see what these talented chefs are capable of when let loose in the MasterChef kitchen.”

While “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” may be over for 2023, the good news is that it will be back in 2024. Network Ten confirmed the show’s renewal at its upfronts in October.

Until then, you can relive the sugar rush, with all episodes of “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” streaming now on 10 Play.

‘Heartstopper’ Season 3: Everything to Know So Far

Heartstopper fans can’t wait to say “hi” to season 3, and the cast and crew are already hard at work on new episodes.

The Emmy-winning Netflix series follows openly gay teen Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as he befriends rugby jock Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). They quickly fall head over heels for each other as Nick realizes he is “bisexual, actually.” Season 2, which premiered in August 2023, ended on a melancholy note.

After prom, Charlie opened up to Nick about his disordered eating and his past self-harm. They expressed how much they cared for each other, but they stopped just short of saying those three little words. Fans can expect a resolution for that little cliffhanger and more in Heartstopper season 3.

When Will ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3 Premiere?

There hasn’t been any release date news, but the previous seasons debuted in June 2022 and August 2023. A summer release seems likely but has not been confirmed.

Will ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3 Be Delayed by Strikes?

While American unions are on strike, British ones are not. Heartstopper is not expected to be delayed and creator Alice Oseman has been writing new episodes.

What Is the ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3 Premiere Titled?

The official Heartstopper Instagram revealed in September 2023 that the premiere will be titled “Love.” The episode is expected to deal with Nick and Charlie being on the verge of saying “I love you.”

“People who have read the comics will know what’s going to happen, but I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t been reading the comics,” Oseman told Tudum in August 2023. “I think [Season 2’s ending] just sets up that conversation for next season. We know that Charlie loves Nick, and I think we know that Nick loves Charlie as well. It’s just about when and how they’re going to say that to each other.”

Who Is in the ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3 Cast?

While the official cast list hasn’t been released, Locke and Connor are expected to return as the leads. However, Sebastian Croft‘s character, Ben, will not appear in the new season.

In a powerful season 2 scene, Charlie refused to forgive Ben, who had bullied and assaulted him. Ben revealed he was switching schools for Sixth Form.

“Ben’s role in Heartstopper is now complete. … I am so proud and honored that Sebastian has been a part of Heartstopper,” Oseman told Tudum. “I know that he’ll go on to do incredible things, and I will be cheering from the sidelines all the way.”

Related: How Taylor Swift ‘Came Through’ for the ‘Heartstopper’ Season 2 Finale

Is Taylor Swift a Heartstopper fan? The Netflix series’ executive producers think so after she allowed them to use her Folklore song “Seven” in the season 2 finale. “I have to say her team was so receptive to it. I don’t have any proof of this, but I feel like they’re Heartstopper fans,” executive producer […]

What Will ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3 Cover?

As the finale indicated, Charlie’s eating disorder and self-harm will be a big focus moving forward. “In season 2, we started to explore mental health in a big way, and I think it’s pretty obvious from the way we leave the season that is going to be a big element of season 3,” Oseman told Metro in August 2023. “We’re going to continue to look at that in a big way and explore how that affects Nick and Charlie’s relationship, and all of the other friendships in the show.”

While Heartstopper is based on Oseman’s graphic novels of the same name, the showrunner is excited to continue expanding her story — so even readers don’t know everything that’s coming.

“I’m always very committed to preserving what is in the comics and making sure all the big, exciting moments are in the show, but honestly, there is just so much extra space around that to do whatever we want,” Oseman told Entertainment Weekly in 2023. “Now that we’ve got seasons 1 and 2, we’ve had so much development for the supporting cast: Tao, Elle, Tara, Isaac, even new characters like Imogen. There’s so much new stuff that gives us so much to play with in season 3. I feel very comfortable letting the show be its own thing. In my mind, the show and the comic feel very separate, although it’s quite a faithful adaptation. I feel excited to get to expand Heartstopper for the show.”

What New Characters Are Joining ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3?

Oseman announced in November 2023 that actor Darragh Hand will portray Michael Holden in the show’s third season. Michael is one of the main characters featured in Oseman’s first novel, Solitaire, which centers around Charlie’s sister, Tori.

“I was very nervous and excited to begin the search for our Michael! Michael is a quirky, eccentric optimist with a sunshine disposition, and it was a challenge to find someone who I felt truly channelled Michael from the books,” Oseman captioned an Instagram pic of Hand and Jenny Walser on set. “But then Darragh came along and warmed our hearts, made us all laugh so much, and perfectly complimented [sic] Jenny Walser’s Tori Spring.”

  • Anna Polyviou May Have Lost “Dessert Masters” — But She Stole Snacks From the Green Room – POPSUGAR Australia

Anna Polyviou May Have Lost “Dessert Masters” — But She Stole Snacks From the Green Room – POPSUGAR Australia

Anna Polyviou’s hot pink mohawk and her contagious personality are about as exhilarating to watch as her smashing an Anna’s Mess 2.0 on the table in front of one of the cleanest pastry chefs in the world — Amaury Guichon.

The past few weeks, we’ve seen her wow the judges with her deceptive hot dog and grated cheese (or should we say, chocolate), Anna’s Mess 2.0, and her interpretation of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” afternoon tea. Unfortunately, when Anna decided to show the judges her softer side with a trifle, the judges wanted more bang and less soft taps from the edgy pastry chef. Anna was then eliminated from the competition.

But all is well in Anna’s land, as she admits, “It was all fun and games.” She’s made new friends, or as she puts it, “family,” got to try some amazing food along the way, learned a lot from the judge’s comments, and got to flex her creative arm.

Anna Polyviou Reflects on “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Journey

“I think if you do it for the trophy, then you lose the fun and creativity of the competition,” she says. “I just wanted to go in and be myself —win or lose, it doesn’t matter to me.”

Her trifle, with a Greek twist, was inspired by her family’s roots. “I wanted it to be pretty and elegant, with several different components,” she says. She lists off her elements: olive oil sorbet, biscuit crumbs, rice pudding. “I wanted it to be sexy.”

Unfortunately, it was the olive oil sorbet that the judges couldn’t get past, along with the fact that her trifle for three was served in one champagne glass.

When she first entered the kitchen, Polyviou admits she saw Reynold as her biggest competition. “He’s a freak! You know,” she says. “He’s so talented and disciplined, but Tibballs was also someone I saw as a top contender.”

As to what Anna is missing most about her time on “MasterChef: Dessert Masters”, it’s the time spent off camera as a team. She lists grabbing gelato together, Jess cooking dinner for everyone, and the camaraderie of the group as just some of her highlights.

Anna also admits to stealing the green room snacks when practising running into the pantry. “I would grab the snacks and put them in my bag. I got away with it for a while but eventually got caught by the team,” she explains. “But they gave me even more snacks to take home, so it was just a fun time to be there — everyone got along.”

What Is Anna Polyviou Doing Now?

So what’s next for Anna? Well, she’s just released her ready-to-eat cookie dough tubs in Woolworths across Australia. She’s also crafting a dessert trolley for the members’ club at Accor Stadium, along with many other projects. And yes, we’ll most likely see her on TV again in the future.

Anna will also be finishing up her contract at The Langham, but is already on the lookout for her next hotel partnership.

“I sent my CV to some hotels for a bit of a laugh,” she admits. But in a more serious manner, Anna loves the hotel business.

“It makes me a better chef,” she says, before joking about whether she sent her CV correctly. “It’s been a while since I’ve sent one. I think I put Amaury down as a reference,” she chuckles.

  • Attention All Dessert Lovers — Here’s When the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Finale Drops – POPSUGAR Australia

Attention All Dessert Lovers — Here’s When the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Finale Drops – POPSUGAR Australia

Short and sweet — it’s how we like desserts, and our reality TV. All good things must come to an end, and just like the final bite of your favourite sweet treat, the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” is sure to leave us happy, satisfied, and looking forward to our next indulgence.

But oh, what a season that it’s been so far. Unlike a regular season of “MasterChef Australia”, “Dessert Masters” puts the masters of their field to the test. From Adriano Zumbo to  Morgan Hipworth, Reynold Poernomo and Kay-Lene Tan, “Dessert Masters” has been stacked with talent from top to bottom. Even better, the tightening in scope has meant that the stakes of every episode have been high, as our esteemed chefs duke it out for the win. After all, it’s not just the $100,000 prize on the line — it’s their reputations.

Before “MasterChef: Dessert Master”s premiered, judge Amaury Guichon praised the contestants’ efforts, adding that he was “so happy” with the series.

“What I’ve experienced so far, I haven’t seen in a long time – a tight knit community of chefs who share great camaraderie, skill and passion for their craft,” Guichon said in a press statement. “This is a once in a lifetime cast of incredibly talented Australian pastry chefs and it is an honour to be judging them. Their creations are so good, I think the audience will want to lick the television screen!”

Needless to say, we agree, and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out! There’s just one question remaining: When is the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” finale? Here’s everything that we know.

When Is the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Finale?

On Sunday, December 3, two “MasterChef: Dessert Master”s contestants will face elimination. The following evening — Monday, December 4 — two more contenders will say goodbye, leaving three finalists to battle it out for the win.

The “MasterChef: Dessert Masters finale” will air at 7.30pm on Tuesday, December 5, and if Network Ten’s statement is anything to go by, it’ll be an episode to remember.

“The “Dessert Masters: grand finale is here!” the network said. “The finalists will battle in a two-course service challenge. Whoever is the top scorer will be crowned champion of “Dessert Masters”.”

Who Will Win the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” Finale?

We believe that Reynold Poernomo will win the “MasterChef: Dessert Masters” finale. If his previous “MasterChef” experience is anything to go by, it’s about time he take home first prize.

In 2015, Reynold came third in Season 7 of this series. Three years later in 2020, Reynold took home fourth place. If anyone has the raw experience to take home a “Dessert Masters” win, it’s this very chef.

What’s more, Reynold hasn’t made any major mistakes this season. If he keeps this pace up, he’ll at least make it into the top three finalists.

“MasterChef Australia: Dessert Masters” airs Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays at 7.30PM on both Channel 10 and 10 Play.

  • Macy’s new Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons: Adam Sandler, Luffy, and an NFT

Macy’s new Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons: Adam Sandler, Luffy, and an NFT

Thanksgiving in the United States comes with a number of traditional televised events, but maybe none as seamless and low-key entertaining as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This year marks the department store’s 97th parade down the streets of New York City, and the event once again promises floats, musical numbers, and big cartoon balloons, albeit with an extremely 2023 touch. Here’s what to know — and a few things you may never think about while watching.

How to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade stream

The official telecast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will air on NBC and be simulcast on Peacock. Today’s Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker will be back per usual to yap about the floats. A Spanish language simulcast will air on Telemundo, hosted by Carlos Adyan and Andrea Meza.

What time does the Thanksgiving Day Parade start

This year’s parade starts a little earlier than usual: the simulcast runs from 8:30 a.m. ET to 12 p.m. ET., but will also begin at 8:30 a.m. in all time zones, so no need to wake up at the crack of dawn. NBC will also air an encore of the parade at 2 p.m. ET.

The new parade balloons and how they got here

    Photo: Macy’s, Inc/Getty Images

This year’s balloon lineup sees a number of returning Giant and Novelty favorites, including Spongebob, Grogu, Bluey, and Smokey the Bear. The commerce of it all means a number of unfamiliar faces will join the lineup, too, including Leo, Adam Sandler’s 74-year-old lizard from the upcoming Netflix animated film; Uncle Dan, the mallard main character of Illumination’s new movie Migration; and Blue Cat & Chugs, the mascots of the Web3 company Cool Cats Group and the winner of a Macy’s contest to decide which NFT brand should earn a coveted character in the parade. 2023, baby! Anime continues its mainstream takeover as well, with legacy balloons Goku and Pikachu joined for the first time by One Piece’s Monkey D. Luffy.

Time has not just modernized the balloon characters, but the process itself. Kathleen Wright, Macy’s director of production operations, tells Polygon that the journey of devising a balloon, rendering it in inflatable form, then parading it along Central Park has taken on the quality of a Seal Team 6 operation. Computers allow designers to test balloon concepts in various weather conditions to determine the appropriate center of gravity and lift, all while minding the dimension requirements that allow it to float through New York.

In the week leading up to the parade, Wright and her team walk through the route with various city departments to size up potential hindrances for the buoyant stars, including any protruding lamp posts, which are manually swung in the opposite direction by city workers on the eve of the parade. On the day-of, the balloons — once made of rubber, but now built as modular polyurethane pieces that are heat sealed together and painted — are inflated with a combination of helium and regular air, based on required lift. Ninety handlers are assigned to each balloon, with 40-50 people securing the handling lines at any given time (and you thought pop stars were needy). By the time you watch the parade at home, a balloon’s “flight envelope” has been completely broken down and considered. There is no room for error, and based on Wright’s description, they don’t leave any.

The rest of the parade lineup

Along with the balloons and fleet of floats (including a sadly inedible Wonka one), the Thanksgiving Day Parade will once again tout a ton of talent shivering in their knickers while performing on the street. The show kicks off with a performance by Jon Batiste, with expected performances by Bell Biv DeVoe; Brandy; Chicago; En Vogue; David Foster and Katharine McPhee; Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors; Jessie James Decker; Ashley Park and the monsters of Sesame Street; Pentatonix; Paul Russell; Amanda Shaw and Alex Smith; and Manuel Turizo. Oh, and ENHYPEN will be there — so if you hear an inordinate amount of screaming from the crowd, it’s because the parade has gone full K-Pop, bless.

  • Five things to know before watching Disney’s Wish

Five things to know before watching Disney’s Wish

At Polygon, a lot of us are fans of sitting down to a movie with as little up-front information as possible, for the feeling of discovery. But sometimes, it helps to know a few things going in, whether it’s an interesting fact about the movie’s history, or just knowing how many end-credit scenes to wait for. Here are five things we think you should know about Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new animated feature Wish before watching.

Does Wish have a post-credits scene?

It does! It’s a brief, wordless sequence that doesn’t have any plot relevance, so you can decide for yourself whether it’s worth staying to watch. Like a lot of other elements in Wish, it’s mostly intended as a visual celebration of Disney’s 100-year anniversary. In the scene, a character with a lute plucks out a simple acoustic version of Disney’s signature ballad “When You Wish Upon a Star,” which segues into Disney’s updated CG animated anniversary logo. There isn’t a lot to it, except as another way the movie taps into Disney history. But if you’re sitting there at the end of the movie feeling the kind of nostalgia Disney intended you to feel, it might bring on the warm fuzzies.

Why does Wish’s animation look different from other Disney movies?

Wish is expressly intended as a salute to Disney history, which is why it’s packed full of visual references to past Disney movies. Part of that project had the directors, Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (Raya and the Last Dragon story head), trying to digitally approximate Walt Disney Animation’s classic 2D hand-painted look. For this film, they used a digital approach previously tested on the experimental Disney short Paperman.

You can read more about the animation development process and the software used to render it in our behind-the-scenes look at Wish’s animation.

Where can I hear the songs from Wish?

Possibly anticipating piracy and deciding to just get all the video-play payout for themselves, Disney has released the Wish soundtrack in an official playlist on YouTube. There are quite a few songs, so if these were all actual clips from the movies, you’d be able to watch a significant chunk of Disney’s Wish free online. Instead, these are lyric videos. If you’re the kind of person who likes to listen to a musical’s songs ahead of time (we don’t understand you, but we know you’re out there), or you’re previewing the movie for younger viewers, or you come out of Wish with a particular song you want to revisit, that’s the easiest way to do it.

As of press time, a few of the songs were also on Spotify on Disney’s channel, but the whole album hadn’t been uploaded yet.

Who wrote the songs in Wish?

Disney fans may notice that Wish’s songs don’t have that Broadway-number, singalong quality common to so many Disney musicals, and that they’re more like radio-ready modern pop. That’s because the lyrics were written by Grammy-nominated pop artist Julia Michaels, who’s previously written songs for Justin Bieber (“Sorry”), Ed Sheeran (“Dive”), Gwen Stefani (“Used To Love You”), and Britney Spears (“Slumber Party”), among others. The music is by Michaels and indie-rock producer Benjamin Rice. They gave Wish a much glossier pop sound than most Disney movies, somewhat akin to the radio remixes of Disney soundtrack songs that have been common since the Disney Renaissance.

Why do some of Wish’s characters look so familiar?

Oof. So you may wind up wondering why the protagonist, Asha (Ariana DeBose), has a squad of seven pals backing her up — characters who mostly don’t have a lot to do, but are almost always together throughout the movie. Those characters are an extended gag from Disney history: They’re modeled after the dwarfs from Disney’s first animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Not only are their outfits color-coded after the dwarfs, they each have characteristics specific to the Snow White characters.

The “seven dwarfs” reference characters in Disney’s animated movie Wish — from left to right, Hal, Safi, Dahlia, Simon, Gabo, Bazeema, and Dario — stand in a crowd scene together, looking concerned

How to tell which Wish character is which dwarf? The fastest way is to check the first letters of their names. Dahlia (Jennifer Kumiyama), Asha’s best friend with the little round glasses and a tendency to lead the group, is Doc. The paranoid, constantly complaining Gabo (Harvey Guillén) is Grumpy. Smiley but not very assertive Hal (Niko Vargas) is Happy. Simon (Evan Peters), the big guy who’s dazed and half-conscious for much of the movie, is Sleepy. Safi (Ramy Youssef), whose only characteristic is that can’t stop sneezing, is Sneezy. Dario (Jon Rudnitsky), the big-eared guy whose job is saying clueless things, is Dopey. And Bazeema (Della Saba), the introvert who keeps disappearing early in the movie, is Bashful. None of this is spelled out in the movie, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
