    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    This sausage spinach crustless quiche is a family favorite and so easy to throw together if you had a busy day or just want something quick.  You can add ingredients you like or use different meats and cheeses in this quiche and make it your own.  I like that I don’t have to have a crust or have to make one but you could make this in a crust if you want.  It is good reheated in the microwave. 

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Pork sausage
    • Fresh spinach
    • Can chopped mushrooms, drained
    • Mozzarella cheese
    • Green or regular onion
    • Eggs
    • Milk
    • Sour cream
    • Garlic powder
    • Black pepper
    • Salt

    SWAPS

    You can switch out the cheese and spices in this recipe. If you are not a fan of mushrooms, simply leave them out. This is a versatile recipe! You could also use turkey breakfast sausage for a lighter version.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    This is a very simple recipe and since it’s crustless it takes nothing to put together. We love having a quiche in the fridge for a easy breakfast!

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
    Cook sausage on top of the stove and drain.  In a large bowl toss sausage with chopped spinach, onions, mushrooms and 1/2 cup of cheese.  

    Step 2
    Spray a baking dish with cooking oil and add sausage mixture.  I used a 10 inch pie plate to make this.  In the same bowl you used to toss sausage and spinach whisk together the eggs, milk, sour cream, garlic powder, black pepper and salt.  

    Step 3
    Pour this over the sausage mixture in the baking dish.  Sprinkle on the other 1/2 cup shredded cheese.  Bake in preheated 400 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes until center is set and top is browned.

    ⭐TIP

    This quiche will puff up in the oven and once removed and cool will fall some. That is nothing to worry about!

    • 1/2 pound pork sausage
    • 3 cups chopped fresh spinach
    • 1 4 ounce can chopped mushrooms, drained
    • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 1/2 cup chopped green or regular onion
    • 5 eggs
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1/2 cup sour cream
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    Making the crust for this recipe can be a little time-consuming, but you can easily use a premade crust if you want.

    Step 1
    Cover the sliced or chopped sweet potatoes with water and boil just long enough to soften. This takes about 10 minutes. They should be soft enough that you can stick a fork through them. Drain and save 1 1/2 cups of the water from boiling the sweet potatoes. In a bowl whisk together the sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and flour.

    Step 2
    Spray a 10 inch iron skillet with cooking spray or you could use a 9 x 13 baking dish. Dump in the cooked sweet potatoes, pour the 1 1/2 cups water over the potatoes. Mix in vanilla extract. Sprinkle on the sugar and spices. Cut up the 5 tablespoons butter in pieces on top. Then make your crust or you could use a bought pie crust on top.

    • 4 medium sweet potatoes peeled and sliced or chopped (about 6 or 7 cups)
    • 1 cup white granulated sugar

    • Mix salt into flour. Cut butter into flour until resembles course crumbs. Add water until you can work with dough. Roll out on a floured surface and place over cobbler in skillet or baking dish.

    • Bake cobbler in a preheated 400 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes until crust is brown on top. Can brush crust with melted butter or egg white for better browning.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    We love the homemade Ranch on this salad, it just gives it a great flavor and really blends the vegetables. You could always add pepperoni, rotisserie chicken, chopped ham to this salad to make it more of a meal. Super versatile and always a hit!

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Rotini pasta (could use any kind of pasta you like)
    • Ripe olives, weight 6 ounces, drained, chopped (optional)
    • Real bacon bits
    • Sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
    • Green onion, chopped (or about 3 onions)
    • Cherry tomatoes, cut in half (could use more or 1 large tomato, chopped and drained)
    • Cucumber, coarsely chopped

    Dressing Ingredients:

    • Mayonnaise or salad dressing (your preference)
    • Buttermilk
    • Sour cream
    • Dried parsley flakes
    • Garlic powder
    • Black pepper
    • Salt
    • Dillweed

    SWAPS

    You can add any vegetables you like to this and remove any you don’t. It’s a salad that will work with just about anything, and it’s always a hit!

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    This salad is super easy, the longest part is taking the time to chop up all the delicious vegetables!

    Step 1
    Prepare pasta according to package directions for salad pasta draining and running under cold water.  Let pasta cool while you prepare other ingredients.

    Step 2
    Mix all together in a large salad bowl and add homemade ranch dressing made with recipe below.  

    Step 3
    Let cool in the refrigerator for several hours before serving or overnight.

    • 8 ounces salad rotini pasta could use any kind of pasta you like
    • 1 can medium pitted ripe olives weight 6 ounces, drained, chopped
    • 1/4 cup real bacon bits
    • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
    • 1/2 cup green onion chopped (or about 3 onions)
    • 12 cherry tomatoes cut in half (could use more or 1 large tomato, chopped and drained)
    • 1 cup cucumber coarsely chopped

    • 1/4 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing your preference
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 1/2 cup sour cream
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley flakes

    • 1/8 teaspoon dillweed

    This Cheddar Ranch Pasta Salad is great for a cookout or gathering. We love pasta salad and this one will not disappoint! My husband loves peas so anytime I can use them in a dish, he’s happy. The peas, cheddar cheese, and ranch add such a wonderful flavor to this salad. You can make this dish the night before and enjoy it for a few days.  You could double the recipe or even cut it in half.  It keeps well refrigerated.  Make this for any holiday or event and you probably won’t bring any home.

    FRESH BLACKBERRY PIE

    If you love blackberry desserts you must give this delicious blackberry pie a try! It’s a wonderful summer staple and a great addition to any gathering.

    If you have followed our site for any amount of time you know we love this Deep Dish Blackberry Cobbler. It’s been a family favorite and past down 2 generations.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    We love blackberry desserts and this pie is no exception! It’s a delicious summer favorite and one your family will love too. Not a lot of ingredients, made with two crusts and wonderful topped with ice cream.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • 2 Pie Shells
    • Blackberries
    • Sugar
    • Vanilla Extract
    • Cinnamon
    • Flour
    • Butter
    • Brown Sugar
    • Milk

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    We made our own pie crust when we made this pie, but you can easily use store bought. We prefer Pillsbury and you can roll those out and would be fine for this pie.

    Step 1
    Place bottom crust in your pie place. (Tip: I spray my pie plate with cooking spray before I add the crust. I think this makes the pie come out of the pan easier). Prick bottom crust with fork.  

    Step 2
    Mix all ingredients except butter,  milk and brown sugar in a large bowl with a spoon.  Pour into pie shell.  Cut butter in pieces on top of filling.  Place second pie shell on top and cut slits for steam to escape.  

    Step 3
    Very lightly brush just a tiny bit of milk on top of the shell and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of brown sugar. 

    Step 4
    Bake in preheated 425 degree oven for 15 minutes.  Reduce heat to 375 degrees and cook 20-25 more minutes until pie is brown on top. Let  cool before cutting.

    We store this pie in the refrigerator, and reheat a slice in the microwave but it’s just as good cold! Makes one pie so about 6-8 slices depending on size.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    We love the combination of the delicious vegetables and the dressing with this salad. Then you add in the bowtie pasta and it’s a hit. If you look at the ingredient list, you may think this takes a lot of time; chopping the vegetables is the most time-consuming part. You can also make this salad you own, its super versatile, if you see an ingredient you don’t like, simply leave it out.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Bow-tie pasta, uncooked
    • Eggs
    • Cherry tomatoes
    • Radishes
    • Cucumber
    • Green onions
    • Green pepper
    • Shredded cheese (I use cheddar, can use what you like)
    • Fresh or frozen sweet peas, uncooked (can cook if you want)
    • Celery seeds
    • Salt
    • Dried or fresh basil
    • White granulated sugar
    • White vinegar
    • Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    The hardest part of this salad is chopping up all the vegetables, so once that is done and you have made the pasta, you are set!

    Step 1
    Cook pasta according to package directions to al dente and drain well. Combine pasta, eggs, cherry tomatoes, radishes, cucumber, green onions, green pepper, cheese and peas. 

    Step 2
    Toss well with spoon. Sprinkle on celery seeds, salt, basil, sugar and vinegar. Add mayonnaise and mix all ingredients well with spoon. Refrigerate at least 3 or 4 hours to let flavors marry. Makes 8 to 10 servings. This keeps well in the refrigerator and recipe could be cut in half.

    • 1 cup shredded cheese I use cheddar, can use what you like
    • 1 cup fresh or frozen sweet peas uncooked (can cook if you want)
    • 1 teaspoon celery seeds
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil or 1 tablespoon fresh basil chopped
    • 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar
    • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
    • 1/2 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
    • Cook pasta according to package directions to al dente and drain well. Combine pasta, eggs, cherry tomatoes, radishes, cucumber, green onions, green pepper, cheese and peas.

    • Toss well with spoon. Sprinkle on celery seeds, salt, basil, sugar and vinegar. Add mayonnaise and mix all ingredients well with spoon. Refrigerate at least 3 or 4 hours to let flavors marry. Makes 8 to 10 servings. This keeps well in the refrigerator and recipe could be cut in half.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    For the crust:

    • Graham Crackers
    • Quick Cooking Oats
    • Walnuts or pecans
    • Brown Sugar
    • Butter

    For the cheesecake

    • Cream Cheese
    • Sweetened Condensed Milk
    • Lemon Juice
    • Vanilla

    SWAPS

    You can use a store bought graham cracker crust for this recipe to save time. I promise you it won’t be as good though.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    You will find this cheesecake very simple to make!

    Step 1 – Crust
    Combine all ingredients. Press into 9 inch regular pie shell.  Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 15 minutes. Let cool before adding pie filling.

    Let cream cheese stand at room temperature until softened.  In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese until light and fluffy. Slowly add condensed milk, lemon juice and vanilla,  beating until smooth.  Pour into crust.  Chill at least 3 hours  until firm and then top with cherry pie filling.

    Crust Ingredients

    • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
    • 1 cup quick cooking oats
    • 1 cup nuts finely chopped or ground (I used walnuts)
    • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 12 tablespoons butter melted

    Filling Ingredients

    • 1 graham cracker pie crust can make your own or use a bought one
    • 1 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
    • 1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
    • 1/3 cup lemon juice fresh or bottled, not lemon extract
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 21 ounce can cherry pie filling

    Filling Instructions

    • Let cream cheese stand at room temperature until softened.  In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese until light and fluffy. Slowly add condensed milk, lemon juice and vanilla,  beating until smooth.  Pour into crust.  Chill at least 3 hours  until firm and then top with cherry pie filling.  Makes 1 pie.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    We love the simplicity of this recipe, its so easy to throw together and your family will love them. Only a few ingredients and so great for Easter! They look beautiful on the table and are delicious. If you are a fan of pickled beets you must add these to your menu!

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Can sliced pickled beets, drain and save juice
    • Hard boiled eggs, peeled
    • Onion
    • Apple cider vinegar
    • Water
    • Brown sugar
    • Black pepper
    • Salt

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    These eggs are so simple! You can make them in about 15 minutes!

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
    Place juice from the beets, apple cider vinegar, water, brown sugar, pepper and salt in a pot on top of the stove.  Bring to a low boil and cook for about 5 minutes.  

    Step 2
    Place eggs, sliced beets and onion rings in a jar that has a lid.  Pour the boiled beet juice mixture over the eggs, beets and onions. 

    Step 3
    Put the lid on and place in refrigerator for at least 24 hours.  I usually do about 2 days and stir a couple times so the eggs get colored evenly.  You can add more vinegar or more water depending on whether you like them less strong or stronger.

    This Watergate Cake is a vintage recipe your family will love. It’s made with pistachio pudding and is an excellent addition to any spring/summer gathering.

    If you are a fan of pistachio, you will definitely need to make the classic Watergate Salad! It’s a wonderful addition to any holiday; some people call it the “green stuff”.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    This cake is made from a cake mix, which makes is super simple and it comes together really quickly. We love the combination of pistachio and coconut. It just goes really well together and the cake is very moist, then you add a cool whip frosting and you have a delicious dessert. It’s so pretty too, so it’s perfect for Easter, St. Patrick’s Day or Mother’s Day!

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • White Cake Mix
    • Vegetable oil
    • Instant pistachio pudding mix
    • 7-up soda
    • Eggs
    • Sweetened flaked coconut
    • Toasted pecans
    • Frosting
    • Milk
    • Instant pistachio pudding
    • Cool Whip, thawed
    • Sweetened flaked coconut
    • Toasted chopped pecans

    As you can see from the ingredient list, you will need 2 packages of pudding and you will use coconut and pecans for the cake AND the frosting.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    This cake turns out beautiful, looks like you spent hours in the kitchen but it comes together really quickly!

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl mix with a mixer on medium speed the cake mix, oil, pudding, eggs, and 7-Up. Once mixed, fold in pecans and coconut. Pour into two greased 9-inch cake pans and bake for 35-40 minutes or until done. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.

    Step 2
    For the Frosting:
    Combine pudding and milk and stir for until slightly thickened (usually around 2-4 minutes). Fold in Cool Whip. Spread frosting on the first layer of the cake and then frost the entire cake. Press the coconut and the pecans into the frosting and then refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Serve cold.

    Cake mix sizes have changed over the years but this recipe works fine. We prefer the white cake mix, it makes the cake much prettier. You can use a yellow cake mix in a pinch.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    This White Chocolate Raspberry Cake is made with a mix and that is one of the things we love because no one would ever know! It’s easy to make and absolutely wonderful! This cake has a raspberry swirl through the middle of the cake. It is great for any occasion and raspberries and white chocolate just go together.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Supreme White Premium Cake Mix
    • Butter, melted
    • Eggs
    • Milk
    • Sour cream
    • Fresh raspberries
    • Raspberry jam
    • White chocolate chips
    • Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients
    • Cream cheese, softened
    • Butter, softened
    • Powdered sugar
    • Vanilla

    SWAPS

    You could use a different cake mix and I think chocolate would be delicious. If you use chocolate I would add chocolate chips. You could also add nuts if you prefer. I have never made this with frozen fruit, as it may have too much water.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    This cake is very easy to make and anyone can throw this one together. It’s so good but everyone will think it is made from scratch!

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.Spray bundt pan with cooking spray and set aside. Using a mixer, combine the cake mix, butter, eggs, milk and sour cream. Fold in white chocolate chips with a spoon.

    Step 2
    In a separate small bowl combine raspberries and jam and mix together with a spoon. Pour cake mix into greased bundt pan. Next pour in the raspberry mixture and swirl it into cake with a knife. Be sure and mix it in well. Bake in preheated oven for 50-55 minutes or until center of cake test done. Let cool 10 minutes and remove from pan. Make frosting. 

    Step 3
    In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese and butter and mix together until creamy. Add the vanilla then gradually add in powdered sugar a little at a time until nice and thick. Frost cake and top with raspberries for decoration.

    We bought some white bark to shave and put on the top for decoration. It really made this cake beautiful, so if you are making it for an event, you may want to add that as well.

    We actually don’t have very many recipes on our website with raspberries. As I stated above, this Blackberry Coffee Cake is made very similar. You may love these desserts:

    • Raspberry Chocolate Cake – This cake is made with raspberry pie filling and it’s very moist. It’s a delicious cake!
    • Almond Berry Crumble Pie – This pie is made with strawberries and raspberries. If you tart and sweet together, this pie is for you.
    • Blueberry Cheesecake – This cake has a homemade crust and it’s one of our most popular recipes!

    Can I use frozen raspberries?

    I think you could, but they could possibly have to much moisture in them. I haven’t made this recipe except the way it’s written.

    We added this Cream Cheese Frosting and tried piping it over the cake, which didn’t turn out PERFECT because my piping stuff broke, and I just tried to freehand it! HAHA! However.. if you follow us, you know we are not going for perfection, we are going for taste and to enjoy our time in the kitchen. I wasn’t going to remake the entire cake so we just went with it!

    There isn’t a leavening agent in this cake, it is correct as written. The eggs are what makes the cake rise. Also you can use any frosting you like and you can also just put the cream cheese frosting on the entire cake, not use the piping method.

    • 2 cups of white sugar
    • 2 sticks of butter softened or 1 cup
    • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract or flavoring
    • 6 eggs
    • 1 cup of black walnut kernels

    Frosting Ingredients

    • 1/4 cup butter or 4 tablespoons softened
    • 4 ounces of cream cheese softened
    • 2 cups of powdered sugar
    • Milk

    Cake Instructions:

    • Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan.

    • Drop into a mixing bowl or an electric mixer in the order shown. Beat on high speed for 5 minutes.

    • Pour into bundt pan and bake for 60-75 minutes or until done.

    Frosting Instructions:

    • Beat together butter and cheese with mixer. Add vanilla extract and powdered sugar and continue mixing until frosting is smooth and of spreading consistency.

    • Add milk start at a tablespoon until the right consistency to pour over cake. If you want to frost the whole cake see the notes section.

    To frost the whole cake you will need this recipe for cream cheese frosting. You won’t need the milk to thin the frosting since you will not be pouring it.

    While Thanksgiving is a purely American holiday, many elements of our national Christmas festivities follow the lead of British and European cultures. Sure, we’ve given the world aural sledgehammers like “Rudolph” and “Frosty,” but across the pond, they’ve established traditions like bringing live trees inside the house, opening presents on Christmas Eve and scheduling the celebratory feast for mid-day.

    There are centuries of British tradition behind the midday timing, many of which can be traced back to class consciousness, historic precedent and just plain old common sense. Barry Tonkinson, vice president of culinary operations at the Institute of Culinary Education, was born and raised in England. “I can say for certain that our national tradition of Christmas dinner is cherished and almost uniformly adhered to by a large portion of the population,” he said. “The day is centered on food and family — and it starts early in the day.”

    Christmas dinner is a daytime thing in Great Britain.

    Food historian Pen Vogler, the author ofStuffed: A History of Good Food and Hard Times in Britain,” explained that the timing of the meal has historic origins: “When we sit down to Christmas dinner in early or mid-afternoon, we’re returning to the mealtimes of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century,” she said.

    “Until the disruption of a working day away from the home, this was the time that most people, from cottage workers to the leisure classes, had a break for dinner. Our ‘dinner time’ was chased later and later into the day by a combination of social pressures and changing working patterns, as more people worked in factories and offices. The elite moved their dinner times later and later, followed by the aspirational classes.

    “In this way, dinner moved to an early or later evening and a new meal, called ‘lunch,’ emerged in the early nineteenth century. In Britain, there is still a regional and class divide between people who call their middle-of-the-day meal ‘lunch,’ which tends to be Southerners and/or posh folks, and those who call it ‘dinner,’ which is a more Northern, working-class term.”

    “I can say for certain that our national tradition of Christmas dinner is cherished and almost uniformly adhered to by a large portion of the population. The day is centered on food and family — and it starts early in the day.”

    But on Dec. 25, Vogler noted, unity returns to the land, at least for those who celebrate the Christian holiday. “It’s lovely that the last two or three hundred years of industrialization and class division seem to melt away for Christmas dinner,” she said. “We mostly all call it ‘dinner,’ too, though there are some die-hard ‘Christmas lunchers,’ and we celebrate all around the nation at around the same time.” In fact, many families in Great Britain still time meals around the King’s Christmas Speech, which is televised at precisely 3 p.m.

    This is how the royals eat, too.

    Chef Darren McGrady was personal chef to Queen Elizabeth II; Diana, Princess of Wales and princes William and Harry for 15 years. For years, he was part of the culinary work that went into making a holiday meal for the royal family’s celebrations at Windsor Castle. It was a massive undertaking that started with preparation of the Christmas puddings in March or April, and then months later they’d be doused with brandy, lit and paraded into the royal dining room, accompanied by a round of applause. “That moment was always the real heart of Christmas to me,” he said.

    He also said that the royal family follows another long-standing tradition by enjoying the main meal early in the day, then having a cold buffet in the evening. “Granted, they have much more expensive cold cuts than most would eat, including things like foie gras en croute,” he noted.

    Not only will your body be happier, but you’ll feel better if you eat the feast while the sun’s still out.

    Here’s what a gastro doctor says.

    It’s great to follow tradition, but it’s also smart to consider the science behind the dinner — or, at least, our digestion of it. Dr. Aja Mccutchen, a gastroenterologist, had this to say about the wisdom of a daytime meal: “The emerging field of chrono-nutrition allows us to understand the relationships of meal timing, circadian rhythm and our metabolic health. Eating earlier allows us to recover from the larger than normal consumption, allowing us more efficient digestion and metabolization.”

    Not only will your body be happier, but you’ll feel better if you eat the feast while the sun’s still out. “Earlier meals allow us to have energy after meals rather than feel sluggish,” she said. “It has also been found that eating late at night may suppress lipase, leading to decreased ability to burn fat. So eating earlier provides better metabolic control, and may prevent holiday bloat, weight gain and the vicious cycle of wanting more. That can happen because ghrelin levels, which increase appetite, spike when you’re eating late.”

    The Brits love this tradition.

    For people who grew up in Great Britain, this is all just business as usual. Iona Mitchell, a teacher who lives in central London, pointed out the beauty of a long, slow enjoyment of food, instead of a gobble-it-down affair: “It is a big meal, but it’s eaten at a very leisurely pace,” she said. “It lasts all day really, and if you take breaks — go for a walk or play games — it’s just a really nice way to spend time together. I think eating this quantity of food in one go would be uncomfortable, so pacing the day is crucial. I’m a big fan of the mid-afternoon walk because if it’s nice and crisp outside, there’s nothing better than getting some exercise and then returning to the warmth just as it’s getting dark. Then I feel reasonably virtuous and ready for pudding and cheese.”

    Tonkinson agreed: “Having a large meal early sets the tone for the later hours, and getting the lunch done early allows everyone to enjoy the remainder of the day with no stress in the kitchen.”

    Finally, Vogler noted that eating first and lounging later gives the day a certain “only on Christmas” quality. “It feels like a special and more luxurious, expansive use of a day when we don’t have to work. We can just pay attention to good food, our families and loved ones.”

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    If you have followed our website for any amount of time, then you know we love old-fashioned recipes, and we love sharing our Grandmother’s recipes. This was one of her favorites. She was from Mississippi, and she loved to entertain her friends. She was very much a Southern Lady and loved to make these for afternoon tea. She would always serve them on cute little plates.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Pecans or walnuts
    • Butter, 
    • Brown sugar
    • Vanilla
    • All-purpose flour
    • Salt

    SWAPS

    There really aren’t many swaps on this recipe unless you want to switch out the vanilla for almond, coconut, maple, etc. That is really about the only change that could be made, other than leaving the nuts out altogether.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

    The most time-consuming part of this recipe is letting the dough get cold. You don’t want the fat source, the butter to heat up while you are working with the dough, so it must be chilled.

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
    Mix all ingredients with mixer until very crumbly. Take your hands and shape into a ball and put in refrigerator until solid enough to pinch off a piece and flatten on a hard surface.

    Step 2
    Cut out shapes with cookie cutters.

    Step 3
    Bake on a greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees about 25 minutes. Just before removing from oven, turn on the broiler for about 45 seconds and let brown on top.

    ⭐TIP

    If your dough get too soft while cutting out the cookies, just return to refrigerator for a while or between cooking.

    SERVE THIS WITH

    These delicious cookies are great for Christmas and go great with this Old Fashioned Snowball Cake. It’s a classic for a reason!

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    These bourbon balls are a classic candy that has been around for many many years. They make a wonderful gift during the holiday season. They are only a few ingredients, not hard to make and always a hit. Put them in a pretty tin and give them as a gift!

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • unsalted butter
    • powdered sugar
    • crisco
    • pecans, finely ground
    • 100 proof Kentucky bourbon (can use more or less and could use another kind of bourbon) *see swaps
    • vanilla extract
    • semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • pecan halves for garnish

    SWAPS

    If you are not a bourbon fan or don’t have bourbon, you can use apple or orange juice in it’s place. We have made them with apple juice, and they were so good! Everyone loved them. You don’t have to use crisco but we find it adds a smoothness to the chocolate that is helpful and makes it cover the balls well.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE KENTUCKY BOURBON BALLS

    These are easy to make but they do have a few steps of putting them in the refrigerator to chill. So that part adds time to the process.

    DIRECTIONS

    Step 1
    Cream butter and sugar.  Add pecans, bourbon and vanilla extract mixing well with mixer.  Chill this mixture in the freezer for 30 minutes or refrigerator for an hour.

    Step 2
    Remove from freezer and make into balls using about a teaspoon of mixture for each one.  Place on wax or foil paper on cookie sheet and put back in the freezer for 30 more minutes or refrigerator for an hour. 

    Step 3
    When 30 minutes are up, melt the chocolate chips and crisco about 2 minutes in the microwave. (The smaller the container or bowl you use to melt the chips the easier it is to dip the bourbon balls in the chocolate).  Some people use a toothpick to hold the bourbon balls. It is easier for me to just drop them in the chocolate and use a wooden spoon or fork to cover.

    Step 4
    Remove each bourbon ball and place on a clean piece of wax paper or foil on cookie sheet. Add a pecan half on top.  Place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes until chocolate hardens.  Store in refrigerator.  Makes about 15-20 bourbon balls, depending on the size you make them.

    • 1/2 cup or 1 stick unsalted butter not margarine, softened(I use organic)
    • 2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1/2 cup pecans finely ground
    • 4 tablespoons 100 proof Kentucky bourbon can use more or less and could use another kind of bourbon
    • 1 teaspoon crisco
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips melted
    • pecan halves for garnish
    • Cream butter and sugar.  Add pecans, bourbon and vanilla extract mixing well with mixer.  Chill this mixture in the freezer for 30 minutes or the refrigerator for an hou.  Remove from freezer and make into balls using about a teaspoon of mixture for each one.  Place on wax paper on cookie sheet and put back in freezer for 30 more minutes or the fridge until hard.

    New Survey Reveals That Covid Has Turned Many Homeowners Into Homebodies

    Covid turned many Americans into homebodies, according to the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence. In its recently released “RICKI 2022 Changes Driven by the Pandemic” survey sent to more than 1,000 homeowners, the research consultancy sought to learn how respondents’ pandemic experiences impacted their relationships with their homes, especially in the kitchen, what changes they’ve made, and how their attitudes have shifted as a result of this massive disruption.

    Greater Desire to Be Home

    One response that leaped from the RICKI survey was 64% of surveyed homeowners strongly agreeing that “I have a greater desire to be home now than I did before the pandemic.” How might this be showing up in home remodeling plans?

    One trend is increased requests for wine and coffee centers by kitchen project clients, facilitating the kind of socializing that was next to impossible during the first months of the pandemic. This has spurred more product releases that help store wine, serve beer and brew coffee at home.

    Steve Smith, CEO of high end Southern California retail chain Pirch shared in trade magazine Kitchen & Bath Design News’ annual Trend Spotting wrap-up last November, “We used to sell built-in coffee machines in one out of 10 kitchens, and now it’s more like three or four out of 10. Customers want to put in their own version of either a bar or a soft drink center, so their homes are better equipped for entertaining. Anything that allows people to entertain in their home has become a must-have.”

    Another area where the pandemic’s influence has shown up is the continued popularity of outdoor living spaces for socializing and relaxation, which are larger, more luxurious and better equipped than ever before. Climate control features extending their use into the hotter and colder months include fans and misters for the hotter months and fire features for the colder ones. Materials like porcelain slab countertops and decking also make these spaces heat and frost resistant.

    Home fitness continues to be popular – even though, as noted here recently, those spaces may be smaller and multi-use in some regions – so that time-pressed, health-conscious homeowners can get a workout in without driving to a gym or sharing showers.

    My Home Makes Me Happier Now

    Covid showed homeowners where their homes were serving them poorly, and a burst of remodeling activity followed to redress some of those issues. For example, the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2022 Trends Summary of industry professionals noted that clients have been choosing easy to clean, sanitary surfaces; hands-free faucets; paints that don’t off-gas, and universal design features that accommodate aging in place, all of which contribute to peace of mind. They’re also adding comfort features like radiant flooring, bathroom storage with outlets for beauty tools, and large islands for entertaining.

    Mental well-being showed up as the top priority for 60% of surveyed homeowners in the John Burns Research & Consulting’s January 2023 Healthy Homes survey, described in this April 11 Forbes.com article. Features that enhance peace of mind definitely support that priority!

    I Am Spending More Time in My Kitchen Now

    There are several factors that likely have 50% of the RICKI survey respondents strongly agreeing that they’re spending more time in the kitchen now than they did pre-pandemic. These include early restaurant shutdowns, the drive to use time at home in creative new ways during COVID, the links between healthy eating and reducing COVID co-morbidities, and inflation creating the need to get smarter about shopping and meal preparation.

    The NKBA survey points out that homeowners are planning their kitchen redesigns for more than just cooking though. Islands are getting larger, the report notes, with 62% wanting eating areas and 59% wanting areas for their kids to complete their homework and school assignments. Also high on 64% of homeowners’ kitchen wish lists in the NKBA study is space to charge and view their phones, tablets and laptops.

    I’m Much More Knowledgeable About Cooking

    That extra time in the kitchen has led 43% of RICKI respondents to agree strongly that they feel better prepared to create meals for themselves and their households than they did pre-pandemic. Appliance manufacturers are helping in this regard, with built-in recipe helpers, cooking app tie-ins and remote operation, letting you check on your oven’s progress from your home office to avoid burning your food. Half of the NKBA respondents (50%) say clients want mobile apps to control their appliances.

    It’s also driving interest in newer, more advanced appliances like ovens with steam or air frying capabilities (63% of NKBA respondents), induction cooktops with smart ventilation and enhanced refrigeration with flex drawers that switch from fridge to freezer to wine cooling.

    While pro-style gas ranges and cooktops have been popular for decades now, the NKBA Report shows “induction popularity expected to climb into mainstream” in the next three years. The 2022 report had induction popularity at 42% versus gas at 46%. Recent studies on the health risks associated with gas cooking and regional bans on gas lines to homes will likely drive those numbers much higher.

    The home cooking trend is also spurring remodels with better pantry storage. The NKBA survey reported a 60% interest in these spaces. Not only do they accommodate food storage, they also often include countertop appliances to help in meal prep, storage for serving pieces and pro-style sinks for prep and cleanup.
