  • OpenAI Teams Up With Oracle and SoftBank to Build 5 New Stargate Data Centers

    OpenAI is planning to build five new data centers in the United States as part of the Stargate initiative, the company announced on Tuesday. The sites, which are being developed in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank, bring Stargate’s current planned capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts—roughly the same amount of power as seven large-scale nuclear reactors.

    “AI is different from the internet in a lot of ways, but one of them is just how much infrastructure it takes,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during a press briefing in Abilene, Texas, on Tuesday. He argued that the US “cannot fall behind on this” and the “innovative spirit” of Texas provides a model for how to scale “bigger, faster, cheaper, better.”

    Three of the new sites, in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a yet-to-be-disclosed location in the Midwest, are being developed in partnership with Oracle. The move follows an agreement Oracle and OpenAI announced in July to develop up to 4.5 gigawatts of US data center capacity on top of what the two companies are already building at the first Stargate facility in Abilene.

    OpenAI claims the new data centers, along with a planned 600 megawatt expansion of the Abilene site, will create more than 25,000 onsite jobs, though the number of workers required to build data centers typically dwarfs the amount needed to maintain them afterwards.

    The two remaining sites are being helmed by OpenAI and SB Energy, a SoftBank subsidiary that develops solar and battery projects. These are located in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas.

    Stargate is one of several major US technology infrastructure projects that have been announced since President Donald Trump took office at the start of the year. OpenAI said in January that the $500 billion, 10 gigawatt commitment between the ChatGPT maker, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX would “secure American leadership in AI” and “create hundreds of thousands of American jobs.”

    Trump touted the mammoth initiative just two days after he returned to the White House, promising that it would accelerate American progress in artificial intelligence and help the US compete against China and other nations. In July, Trump announced an AI action plan that called for speedy infrastructure development and limited red tape as the US tries to beat other countries in the quest for advanced AI. “We believe we’re in an AI race,” White House AI czar David Sacks said at the time. “We want the United States to win that race.”

    OpenAI initially framed Stargate as a “new company” that would be chaired by Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son. Now, however, executives close to the project say it’s an umbrella brand name used to refer to all of OpenAI’s data center projects—except those developed in partnership with Microsoft.

    The flagship site in Abilene is primarily owned and operated by Oracle, with OpenAI acting as the primary tenant, according to executives close to the project. The buildout, which is being managed by the data center startup Crusoe, is on track to be completed by mid-2026, sources close to the project say. It is already running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and supporting OpenAI training and inference workloads, those sources add.

  • Jim Jordan pressed to subpoena climate group accused of ‘judicial manipulation’

    FIRST ON FOX: A conservative climate policy group is urging House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to subpoena records from the Environmental Law Institute’s Climate Judiciary Project as part of an ongoing probe into the influence of climate advocacy groups in climate policy litigation. 

    Hon. Jason Isaac, CEO of the American Energy Institute, a conservative pro-U.S. energy production policy group, wrote a letter to Jordan last week pointing to evidence from a Sept. 12 Multnomah County v. ExxonMobil et al. court filing that he says suggests “covert coordination and judicial manipulation.”

    “This new evidence raises serious red flags about the credibility of both the so-called science being used in climate lawsuits and the judicial training programs behind the bench,” Isaac told Fox News Digital. 

    According to Isaac’s letter to Jordan, the court filing submitted by Chevron Corporation earlier this month reveals that “one of the plaintiffs’ lead attorneys, Roger Worthington, had undisclosed involvement in at least two so-called scientific studies that the county is presenting as independent, peer-reviewed evidence.”

    One of those studies “acknowledged funding from the Climate Judiciary Project in a draft version, but that disclosure was inexplicably removed from the final publication,” Isaac said in the letter. 

    Earlier drafts of the study, labeled “DO NOT DISTRIBUTE,” were found on Worthington’s law firm website, the letter revealed.

    According to the American Energy Institute, the study seeks to “attribute global economic losses from climate change to specific oil companies.” The website also included a “pre-publication draft of a CJP judicial training module” with internal editorial comments, according to the letter. 

    Isaac told Jordan this mark-up raises “serious questions about how and why a plaintiffs’ attorney had early access to, and possibly editorial influence over, materials being presented to state and federal judges as ‘neutral’ science.”

    Another module was designed to “educate” participant judges on how to apply “attribution science” in the courtroom, according to Isaac.

    “The Environmental Law Institute has claimed neutrality, yet documents suggest coordination with plaintiffs’ counsel who stand to profit from the outcomes,” Isaac told Fox News Digital. “If the same lawyers suing energy companies are shaping the studies and educating the judges, that is not justice; it is manipulation. Congress is right to dig deeper, and the American Energy Institute is proud to support that effort.” 

    Isaac is requesting that Jordan formally request “communications, draft documents, funding agreements, and internal editorial notes related to the scientific studies and CJP curriculum.”

    While commending Jordan’s leadership, Isaac said, “Judges and the public deserve to know whether the courtroom is being quietly shaped by coordinated climate advocacy posing as neutral expertise.”

    Isaac said the Environmental Law Institute and Worthington should answer several questions about their involvement in the studies, including the “judicial education module on attribution science.”

    “Does ELI regularly seek input from plaintiffs’ attorneys on its judicial education modules?” Isaac questioned. 

    “ELI did not fund the Nature study, and the Climate Judiciary Project has not coordinated with Mr. Worthington,” Environmental Law Institute spokesman Nick Collins told Fox News Digital in a statement. 

    “CJP does not participate in or provide support for litigation,” Collins added. “Rather, CJP provides evidence-based continuing education to judges about climate science and how it arises in the law. Our curriculum is fact-based and science-first, grounded in consensus reports and developed with a robust peer review process that meets the highest scholarly standards.”

    When 23 Republican state attorneys general sent a letter last month to Environmental Protection Agency chief Lee Zeldin calling on him to cancel funding to the Environmental Law Institute, Collins told Fox News Digital that the Climate Judiciary Project’s projects are far from “radical.”

    “The programs in which the Climate Judiciary Project (CJP) participates are no different than other judicial education programs, providing evidence-based training on legal and scientific topics that judges voluntarily choose to attend,” Collins said.

    How Wisconsin’s solar battery park powers 130,000 homes

    The Paris Solar farm began producing power in December 2024 and generates 200 megawatts of renewable electricity during the day. That amount is enough to supply about 55,000 homes each year.

    Now, a 110-megawatt battery storage system has been added. These batteries capture excess energy from the solar panels and release it at night, during cloudy weather, or when demand suddenly rises. The battery system can power about 130,000 homes for up to four hours.

    Energy use is climbing, and nearly 79 percent of electricity in the United States still comes from fossil fuels. That dependence contributes to increased carbon pollution, higher costs and leaves the grid vulnerable during extreme conditions.

    The Paris Solar-Battery Park reduces reliance on fossil fuels while strengthening Wisconsin’s grid. It also provides a model other states can follow.

    Mike Hooper, president of project partner We Energies, called the project “historic” and stressed that customers can count on dependable and affordable power in any weather. That level of reliability is especially crucial as storms, heatwaves and cold snaps put additional pressure on power systems.

    What Wisconsin’s solar battery park means for clean energy

    Battery storage is becoming a cornerstone of the clean energy movement. Without storage, solar power only helps while the sun is shining. With it, renewable energy becomes flexible, consistent and available around the clock.

So it could reduce the amount of aquatic weed growth, which is a major canal maintenance issue. It also saves land,” explained Brandi McKuin, a project scientist at UC Merced.However, the project faces challenges. “It’s more expensive to span a canal than it is to build a solar array on the ground, a ground-mounted system,” McKuin said. The team is working to quantify whether the benefits will outweigh the costs, considering water savings, reduced aquatic weed growth and land savings. “If we have less aquatic weed growth and if we don’t have to pay for land, does that make the system less expensive? And that’s what we’re working on quantifying now,” McKuin said.Researchers will gather data after a full season to assess the project’s results.   • Louisiana Hands Meta a Tax Break and Power for Its Biggest Data Center

    The agreement sets out hiring timelines that the company must also hit to receive these tax incentives: Meta can receive the highest property tax exemption as long as it hires the equivalent of 300 “full-time” jobs by 2030, 450 by 2032, 475 by 2033 and 500 by December 31, 2034.

    Louisiana’s agreements ask for more than some other states’ tax subsidies. According to Good Jobs First, nearly half of state tax subsidies for data centers don’t require any new jobs to be created. But Miller has concerns that the tax breaks were not necessary at all to entice a company as large as Meta. “While everyone likes to avoid taxes, they’re not going to hire people in Richland [Parish] just because they’re going to get a tax break,” Miller says.

    Louisiana had already amended a tax rebate to create an exemption for data centers in 2024 to entice Meta; in its latest iteration, it says data centers can receive a full sales tax exemption for equipment purchases in the state as long as they hire 50 full-time jobs and invest at least $200 million by July 1, 2029. A separate contract viewed by WIRED affirms that this applies to the Richland Parish data center, in addition to the PILOT agreement.

    Good Jobs First says that at least 10 states have subsidies for data centers that are worth more than $100 million each, and “have suffered estimated losses of $100 million each in tax revenue for data centers,” according to its data. In total, these states forgo more than $3 billion in taxes annually for data centers. Texas revised the cost of its data center subsidy in 2025 from $130 million to $1 billion. In 2024, a pause on data center subsidies was passed in Georgia but vetoed by governor Brian Kemp.

    The Franklin Farms site in Holly Ridge, the area of Richland Parish where Meta’s data center is being built, was purchased by Louisiana specifically for economic development projects. In its ground lease with Meta, Louisiana offered the 1,400-acre plot to the company for $12 million, which the lease says was the cost to the state of acquiring and maintaining the land. The lease also says Meta’s $732,000 a year “rent” is “credit toward the Base Purchase Price,” meaning the company will have paid for the property by a little over 16 years into its 30-year lease.

    The price for the potential sale would be slightly higher if Meta does not reach minimum hiring and investment thresholds: As an example, the lease says if Meta only spends $4 billion in the state instead of $5 billion, the property would end up costing it $19 million. Louisiana Economic Development reserves the right to reclaim the property if Meta doesn’t invest at least $3.75 billion and hire the equivalent of 225 “full-time” jobs by 2028. When asked if Meta plans to purchase the property, Clayton said, “We’ll keep you updated on our future plans for this site.”

    Meta’s presence has already caused land values to jump. A nearby tract of 4,000 acres of land in Holly Ridge is for sale for $160 million, or $40,000 per acre—more than 4.5 times the price paid by Louisiana for the data center’s site.

    But there’s also a concern that Meta could delay or abandon the data center project. The PILOT agreement its subsidiary signed with the state says the company’s timeline will depend on “numerous factors outside of the control of the lessee, such as market orientation and demand, competition, availability of qualified laborers to construct and/or weather conditions.”

    “My general fear is that too many data centers are being built,” Miller says. “That means some of the data centers are just going to be abandoned by the owners.”

    She says in the scenario that Big Tech cuts back investments in data centers, Meta would not even be able to find another buyer. “Essentially, the state will be stuck with this warehouse full of computers,” Miller says.

  • Big Tech Dreams of Putting Data Centers in Space

    For one thing, the systems he imagines process data relatively slowly compared to those on terra firma. They’d be constantly bombarded by radiation, and “obsolescence would be a problem” because making repairs or upgrades would be confoundingly difficult. Hajimiri believes that data centers in space could, someday, be a viable solution but hesitates to say when that day might come. “Definitely it would be doable in a few years,” he said. “The question is how effective they would be, and how cost-effective they would become.”

    The idea of simply putting data centers in orbit is not limited to the offhand musings of techies or the deeper thought of academics. Even some elected officials in cities where companies like Amazon hope to build data centers are raising the point. Tucson, Arizona, councilmember Nikki Lee waxed poetic about their potential during an August hearing, in which the council unanimously voted down a proposed data center in their city.

    “A lot of people are saying data centers don’t belong in the desert,” Lee said. But “if this is truly a national priority,” then the focus must be on “putting federal research and development dollars into looking at data centers that will exist in space. And that may sound wild to you all and a little science fiction, but it’s actually happening.”

    That’s true, but it’s happening on an experimental scale, not an industrial one. A startup called Starcloud hoped to launch a refrigerator-sized satellite housing a few Nvidia chips in August, but the launch date was pushed back. Lonestar Data Systems landed a miniature data center, carrying precious information like an Imagine Dragons song, on the moon a few months ago, though the lander tipped over and died in the attempt. More such launches are planned for the coming months. But it’s “very hard to predict how quickly this idea will become economically feasible,” said Matthew Weinzierl, a Harvard University economist who studies market forces in space. “Space-based data centers may well have some niche uses, such as for processing space-based data and providing national security capabilities,” he said. “To be a meaningful rival to terrestrial centers, however, they will need to compete on cost and service quality like anything else.”

    For now, it’s much more expensive to put a data center in space than it is to put one in, say, Virginia’s Data Center Valley, where power demand could double in the next decade if left unregulated. And as long as staying on Earth remains cheaper, profit-motivated companies will favor terrestrial data-center expansion.

    Still, there is one factor that might encourage OpenAI and others to look toward the heavens: There isn’t much regulation up there. Building data centers on Earth requires obtaining municipal permits, and companies can be stymied by local governments whose residents worry that data center development might siphon their water, raise their electricity bills, or overheat their planet. In space, there aren’t any neighbors to complain, said Michelle Hanlon, a political scientist and lawyer who leads the Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi. “If you are a US company seeking to put data centers in space, then the sooner the better, before Congress is like, ‘Oh, we need to regulate that.’”

    Potential in a plastic bag

    Aoki first met the Neuro founders nearly a decade before he started working with them.

    “I still remember when they came into the office and presented this caffeine gum to me”, he recalls. “They brought it in a plain plastic bag — no branding, no packaging. Just, ‘here’s this stuff that works.’

    He laughs. “You look at it and think, what is this, some kind of drug?

    Luckily for Neuro, Aoki loved it.

    “It’s more exciting for me to see indie startups with brilliant ideas than something incubated by a big company with a huge team behind it,” he shares. ” I’d rather see two guys in their college dorm saying, ‘Hey, this is a great idea that could really help people or become something a lot of people will actually use.’”

    Still, the shrewd DJ wasn’t ready to commit right away. He and his team took their time with due diligence while keeping a friendly relationship with the founders.

    “It’s important for me to see that this works before I get involved,” Aoki explains.

    For Neuro, working means giving consumers the caffeine boost they need without triggering their anxiety — or their bladders.

    “I’m a big coffee drinker, and I love energy drinks,” Aoki admits. “But you can’t be pounding beverages all the time.”

    BOSTON — The Trump administration is signaling that it will likely cancel a federal permit for a regional offshore wind project, drawing a rebuke from state leaders and environmentalists who said such a decision would set back the state’s climate change goals and cost thousands of good-paying jobs.

    The U.S. Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said in a new court filing last week that it is reconsidering federal approval of Avangrid’s New England Wind 1 project. The 719-megawatt project called for generating enough electricity to power more than 400,000 homes in the state.

  • Trump says grocery, energy prices are down. Many aren’t

    One of the biggest talking points of Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign was to reverse the high inflation that peaked in 2022 under former President Joe Biden. Trump promised to reduce prices for groceries, cars and other consumer items.

    Trump took a victory lap on prices during an Aug. 26 Cabinet meeting, calling out a few categories. 

    “Groceries are down. Energy is way down,” Trump said. “Was $4 and $5 for a gallon of gas.”

    We looked at official government data and found that the cost of some grocery and energy products have gone down, but many have seen increases.

    The White House did not respond to an inquiry for this article.

    Food prices are up, with a few exceptions

    For groceries, we examined standard price data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index. Taken as a whole, the cost of food has risen, but some individual items have fallen in price as others rose. 

    A measure for groceries, called food at home, rose by a small amount between December 2024 and July 2025 — just under 1%. 

    Combining food and beverage prices shows a rise of 1.5% during the same period.

    The Bureau of Labor Statistics also separates price patterns for key types of food. A deeper dive into the grocery cart shows that some of these items became more expensive while others became cheaper.  

    The price of eggs, an issue Trump spotlighted earlier in the year, has fallen by about 13%, following a bird flu-driven spike.

    Bread fell by 3.2%, and fruits and vegetables fell by 0.7%.

    But a larger number of items increased in price. Bacon rose by 2.9%. The combined cost of meats, poultry, fish and eggs rose by 2.8%. Coffee prices rose by 11.3%. Dairy and related products rose slightly, by 0.5%. Sugar and sweets rose by 3.7%.

    Ground beef saw the biggest increase, rising by 11.6%. Drought and export limits have driven beef prices higher.

    These increases are over half a year. If these items’ prices continue to rise at the same rate over a full year, the percentage increase would double. 

    Energy prices overall are down, but electricity is up

    The overall cost of energy is down, by about 2.6% on Trump’s watch. Energy is a broad field that includes fuel oil, propane, kerosene, firewood, electricity and energy services.

    Many consumers have noticed that their monthly electricity bills are up, by 4.6%.

    Gasoline prices, according to the Energy Information Administration, rose by just a few cents from $3.109 on Jan. 20, Trump’s inauguration day, to $3.147 on Aug. 25, the most recent data available when Trump spoke. (Gas prices are typically higher in the summer.) 

    Trump compares this with $4 or $5 per gallon gasoline, but the last time prices were that high was in 2022. Most, and most of the subsequent price decline came under Biden. Gasoline prices were below $4 per gallon for the final two and a half years of Biden’s presidency.

    Trump “can point to successes in lowering inflation in some commodities; but there have been ‘failures’ in many other commodities,” said Gary Burtless, a Brookings Institution economist. “Overall, it’s hard to say that inflation is sharply or even moderately lower than it was in the late-Biden-administration era.”

    Some food items have seen a price decline on Trump’s watch, and overall energy prices have declined. But many items have increased in price.

    Among the food items to rise in price between December 2024 and July 2025 are ground beef, bacon, other meats, coffee, dairy products and sugar and sweets.

    Navy expands solar-powered surveillance

    NAWCAD leaders say Skydweller will fit into the Navy’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) network. Unlike expensive satellites or large drones such as the Global Hawk, Skydweller offers commanders a cheaper option for persistent monitoring. It can hover over an area in what experts call a “pseudo-satellite role,” freeing up more advanced systems for priority missions.

  • Bengals Announce 2025 Team Captains

    The Bengals voted four new captains for the season that opens in Cleveland Sunday (1 p.m.-Cincinnati’s FOX 19) in an election that didn’t exactly shift the balance of power in the locker room.

    The quartet joining the return trio of quarterback Joe Burrow, left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., and center Ted Karras have been mainstays in the Burrow Era, started Super Bowl LVI, and have long been considered team leaders without wearing the ‘C.’

    Triple Crown wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and defending NFL sack champion Trey Hendrickson are no-brainers. So, too, are defensive tackle B.J. Hill and linebacker Logan Wilson on a defense that has no returning captains but now has three of them who come Sunday are playing in their combined 200th Bengals game.

    “They’re the group that I’m going to call in my office, get their opinion on schedule, my thoughts for the week going into an opponent, issues we may have around the building, in the locker room,” said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor after Monday’s practice.

    “They’re the sounding board that I have to be able to trust, and they’ve got to be able to trust me. And they are the first ones I turn to. There’s plenty of people that aren’t elected captains that, over the course of the season, I’ve looked for input from, but this is certainly a group that I start with, and I think it’s a good group of seven guys that I trust, and I think the players made the right call.”

    Chase is a welcome addition to the offensive side of the ball, and it certainly didn’t surprise anybody. Burrow and Chase, teammates for eight seasons going back to LSU in 2018, have hooked up again.

    “These two guys. They gave them, what? A quarter of a bill?” Karras asked of the historic Burrow and Chase multi-year contracts. “They’ve been here every single day in the spring. No vet days. Really doing all the right things.

    “(Chase) earned a lot of respect and, obviously, received the vote of his peers I think he’s earned every bit of it. Earned every bit of his contract, every bit of the respect of his teammates. We’re counting on him to be the guy that he is.”

    If anyone knows the guy Chase is, it is fellow big-time wide receiver Tee Higgins. He’s been here a year longer than Chase and is one of those guys who is a ‘C,’ without it on his uniform.

    “You can’t ask for more things in a captain,” Higgins said. “He gets along with everybody in the (wide receiver) room. Everybody in the locker room. He challenges guys whether it’s on offense or defense every day.”

    That was on display during training camp. After wide receivers coach Troy Walters suggested in the offseason he get a little more vocal, Chase stepped up and took on all comers during spirited practices with the secondary and the rest of the defense.

    “I think Ja’Marr has been a great leader for us. He’s been a guy that’s always given me honest feedback whenever I ask for it,” Taylor said. “The players elected him as captain, and I think he’s earned it through the way that he works. Leads by example, brings a lot of energy to practice and games, and is one of the top performers we have. I think it’s fitting for him to be elected captain.”

    He said the same things about the slate of new defensive captains. So did sophomore cornerback Josh Newton, a developing captain himself.

    “Type of players you want to lead you to the promised land,” Newton said. “Consistent guys. Hard-working guys. Experienced guys. These guys don’t take a play off. They’re hard not to follow.”

    Wilson, a three-time captain at Wyoming, has always acted like one since he got the starting job the year the Bengals went to the Super Bowl in his second season. As the man with the green dot on his helmet talking to coaches and communicating every play with past captains like DJ Reader up front and Vonn Bell in the back, leading is as natural as it gets.

    Now he’s got a ‘C” of his own and he’s honored.

    “I always looked at myself as a leader by example,” Wilson said. “I’m not the rah-rah type that gets you going energy type of guy. I’m just going to lead by example, play at a high level, do the same things the right way.

    “Wearing the green dot, you’re literally looking at me for the call. You’re the middle man between the back- end guys and the front guys. It’s important to have people on the same page. I’ve taken a lot of pride in that over the years as I’ve grown into that role.”

    Hendrickson and Hill are two guys who also wore the C without wearing the C. Just this past camp, Hendrickson was holding-in, and still walked and talked first-round pick Shemar Stewart through his first NFL camp.

    “He’s always been (a captain) no matter what,” Hill said. “The last four, shoot the last five years, he’s been there.”

    Hendrickson and Hill both arrived in 2021 and emerged as playoff heroes on the way to the Super Bowl. Hendrickson became the richest Bengals free agent in history when he signed that March and Hill arrived on the doorstep of the season when the Bengals traded first-round draft pick Billy Price for him. Hill is now in the first year of his second three-year deal with the club.

    “I just want to win a lot of games, make plays, and make this team better,” said Hill, embracing his first official captaincy since his senior year at North Carolina State. “That’s my goal at the end of the day. I was awarded captain and that’s a special thing and I take pride in that.”

    As heads into his fifth Bengals season, the only difference is now the ‘C,’ is on his chest instead of in it.

    “I’ve always been that type of guy that carried himself in a way people respected,” Hill said. “I’m excited for the opportunity.”

  • 91,000 Premature Deaths Each Year Linked to US Air Pollution

    Air pollution from oil and gas is linked to 91,000 premature deaths and hundreds of thousands of health issues across the United States each year—with Black, Asian, Native American and Hispanic groups consistently among the most affected. That’s according to an extensive new study published Aug. 22. 

    The researchers say that the study, published today in Science Advances, is the first to comprehensively quantify the health impacts outdoor air pollution has across all stages of fossil fuel production, and to analyze disparities in exposure to the health risks. 

    The study examined the entire oil and gas life cycle: upstream, which involves the exploration and extraction of oil and gas; midstream, which involves compression, transport, and storage; downstream, which involves the transformation into petrochemical products; and end use, when the product reaches its final use stages. 

    Native American and Hispanic populations are most affected by air pollution that comes from the upstream and midstream stages, the study found, while Black and Asian populations are most impacted by downstream and end-use stages. Researchers also found that 10,350 pre-term births and 216,000 new cases of childhood asthma per year are attributable to air pollution from oil and gas, along with 1,610 lifetime cancers across the U.S.

    While downstream activities cause less pollution than upstream and end-use activities, they are responsible for greater adverse health impacts, with Black communities facing the most severe health outcomes—including premature mortality, preterm births, and childhood asthma. These impacts are largely experienced in locations with major oil-refining activities, such as eastern Texas and southern Louisiana.

    Researchers used an air pollution model to determine pollution concentrations, and applied that information to epidemiological models to estimate the number of severe health outcomes. They used data from 2017, the most recent year of complete data available, and estimate that the findings might be conservative, given that U.S. oil and gas production has since increased by 40%.

    Eloise Marais, the study’s senior author and professor of atmospheric chemistry and air quality at University College London, says that the findings confirm what communities have long known. “We’re not sitting in our academic ivory tower and telling these communities that they’re experiencing adverse health outcomes. They know this already and they’re going through processes to try and address it,” says Marais. “What our study does is ensures that we can provide really rigorous evidence of the size of the impact in the hope that this is picked up by community leaders, by advocacy groups, by policy makers…to try and identify exactly where, in more granular detail, these disparities are occurring, to essentially develop very clear action plans to address them.”

    The solution is clear, the researchers say. While greenhouse gasses released into the atmosphere can linger for years, once air pollution is reduced the health benefits are nearly instantaneous. “[The study] gives us a very clear perspective on what the public health gains could be, and they would be quite immediate if we reduced our independence on oil and gas,” says Marais. “We would start to see immediate benefits on air quality and health, and we would have mitigated a large portion of the disparities in health burdens.”
