  • ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Live-Action Villain Spinoff ‘Gaston’ in the Works at Disney

Disney is hoping that audiences will want to be guests for a live-action Beauty and the Beast spinoff.

The studio is developing Gaston, a feature based on the story’s villain character, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Plot details have not yet been disclosed for the movie that is still in early stages.

Dave Callaham penned the latest draft for the live-action film after Kate Herron and Briony Redman worked on a previous one. Michelle Rejwan is set to produce.

Adapted from a French fairy tale, the original Beauty and the Beast was a sensation when it hit theaters in 1991, becoming Disney’s highest-grossing animated title at the time. The story focuses on Belle, a young woman agreeing to live with an arrogant prince who has been transformed into a monster and has a limited time to earn the true love that will break his spell. It won two Oscars from six nominations and holds the distinction as the first animated movie ever nominated for best picture.

Richard White voiced Gaston in the animated film. The studio released Bill Condon’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast in 2017, with Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast, and Luke Evans as Gaston. That movie surpassed $1.26 billion at the global box office.

Disney has recently continued to prioritize live-action remakes of its classic animated properties. This includes a live-action take on Tangled being back in active development after THR reported in April that the film’s progress had been paused in light of Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot’s live-action Snow White underperforming at the box office. Since then, Disney had a massive hit with the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, while Barry Jenkins’ prequel movie Mufasa: The Lion King also had a strong showing when it debuted late last year.

The studio has had success over the years with live-action spinoffs focusing on villains from its animated movies. This includes 2014’s Angelina Jolie-led Maleficent, highlighting the antagonist from Sleeping Beauty, and Emma Stone starring in 2021’s Cruella as the villainous Cruella de Vil from the 101 Dalmatians franchise.

Deadline was first to report on the project.

  • A new Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley want to tell you a story

LONDON (AP) — If you listen carefully, you can hear the noise of chocolate frogs flying through the air on the Hogwarts Express.

Hermione Granger gasps with delight as Ron Weasley catches the sweet treat thrown his way by Harry Potter, as all three travel home after an eventful first year at the wizarding school.

This isn’t the now-vintage, Daniel Radcliffe-era movies, it’s not the “Cursed Child” play and neither is it the forthcoming HBO TV series. What you’re hearing is a brand-new cast in a new Audible recording of J.K. Rowling’s seven books.

The legacy of Harry Potter might have been clouded by headlines surrounding Rowling’s comments on gender and opposition to trans rights, but it hasn’t stopped production on new projects set in the wizarding universe. The Associated Press visited the London recording studio for a “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” session in the summer, as young actors Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester and Arabella Stanton lay down walla — background noise that’s used to bring the stories to life. The young trio voice Harry, Ron and Hermione in the first three audiobook adaptations, before an older cast takes over.

Instead of listening to someone like Jim Dale or Stephen Fry telling the whole story alone, this new audio production — the first book releases Nov. 4 — has a full, high-wattage cast. While Cush Jumbo narrates, Hugh Laurie is Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed portrays Professor Snape and Michelle Gomez brings Professor McGonagall’s Scottish lilt to life. Matthew Macfadyen voices Voldemort, and Keira Knightley appears later in the series as Dolores Umbridge.

But it’s Stanton who is pulling double duty in the Potterverse: The 11-year-old is also starring as the studious and brave Hermione Granger in the HBO show.

“I can’t say much, because they’ve cast a Mimblewimble tongue-tying spell on me,” Stanton apologizes. “But I’ve just started filming, and it’s great at the moment.”

AP sat down with Treadaway, 14, Lester, 13, and Stanton to find out the snacks required to keep them going, their introductions to the wizarding world and how they feel about acting. The conversation has been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: What were the auditions like?

TREADAWAY (Harry): You really got like, a taste of what it was going to be like, also in the studio and even the scenes.

AP: Had you done anything like this before?

LESTER (Ron): I did some audio before, yeah, but I mean nothing as professional as this is.

AP: How does this compare to your stage work?

STANTON (Hermione): It’s just very, very different, but I suppose the similar thing is that, because you want to make your voice come alive, I think you … sort of act as you’re saying the lines to give the words some color.

AP: How’s the recording going so far?

LESTER: Lovely people, great food and great experience.

AP: What’s your favorite food when you’re working?

TREADAWAY: The snack cupboard and the chocolate fridge.

LESTER: The chocolate fridge is dedicated to chocolate.

    STANTON: It’s filled with snacks.

TREADAWAY: They have to restock every time I go.

AP: Can you remember the first time you ever heard about Harry Potter?

TREADAWAY: I think it might have been when my sister was watching the movies chronologically and then for some reason I only decided to tag along for the last one.

AP: Did you go back to the beginning?

TREADAWAY: I don’t think I did, because I was like, “Oh, I can’t watch this, this is a 12 (rating),” so I had to wait till I was 12 to watch them.

STANTON:  My friends had started all reading all the books and everything and they were like, “Oh have you heard Harry Potter this, Harry Potter that?” And so I was like, right I’m going to start reading the books. So I think when I was 8 I started reading the first one. Sort of just worked my way through them and yeah it was great, I’ve loved Harry Potter. I love it.

LESTER: I saw this book in Waterstones and everyone said that it was quite popular. It was like one of the bestsellers. So my mum bought it for me and I read the book and it was just great.

AP: So what do your friends and family think about you voicing these characters? Have you been able to tell them?

LESTER: I haven’t really told many of them, not really.

TREADAWAY: I think those who know will never truly know actually what it’s about until they listen to it.

STANTON: I think I’ve told quite close family, sort of keeping it in a bubble. But they’ll never really understand because so much effort — I mean, the teams, all the amazing people behind it, they put in so much effort to make the audio series incredible.

AP: Have you got a favorite part of the stories?

TREADAWAY: I can’t wait to hear how the battle scenes work because of all the SFX and all the sounds and all of the grunts and oohs and ahs and all that because I think that will sound really cinematic. … It was very weird because I would stand there for a minute just grunting and I would feel so stupid.

STANTON: I can’t wait to hear all the spells because I think Hermione generally just says so many spells and I can’t wait to hear the sounds of people casting them, I just love spells.

LESTER: My favorite part that I’m looking forward to is just literally just to hear it all come together and for everyone to talk to each other because I feel like that’s going to be amazing.

AP: Are you like your characters in any way?

TREADAWAY: That’s how I found it quite easy to just step into the character because I think I relate to them and I’m sure you guys do as well. … I’m not like the biggest ego ever. … Sometimes you’re the smaller person in the room and you just sometimes just mingle. I feel like I relate to Harry in that way.

AP: How about you and Hermione?

STANTON: I love books. I love writing, I love reading, I love doing all that kind of stuff. I mean, I like school, but I don’t love school. And I think … books is the main connection between Hermione and I.

AP: How are you like Ron?

LESTER: I think we both relate to each other because we’re quite cheeky and we love food. We love food! … In moments, we’re both serious and we’re also not afraid to stand up for the people that we love or stand up for our friends because we always do the thing that’s right, and that’s kind of what I relate to, because I go into the deeper side of Ron, and not just the eating food and being cheeky.

AP: What’s your favorite kind of magical element?

LESTER: My favorite kind of magical element is the spells. I think they’re just really cool. Like “stupefy” (the stunning spell) — I think that’s very, very cool.

STANTON: One of the main props that Hermione uses is the Time Turner. I love all the magical objects like the Invisibility Cloak, the Time Turner, all those things because … (they’re) things you wouldn’t be able to use in real life, but in the magic world, it transports you into a completely different world.

TREADAWAY: The Polyjuice Potion, because when you record that, it’s like, you have to really hone in on the actual sound of turning into someone else, and that was one of my favorite magic parts of it.

AP: Are you aware of how much love there is for Harry Potter?

TREADAWAY: I guess that’s sort of why you have a bit of pride in yourself knowing that such a big name and characters, you get to associate yourself with them. If you know what I mean, it gives you a little feeling inside your heart.

AP: What does it mean for you to be representing Ron?

LESTER: It makes me proud, honestly, to be representing such a great and funny character, but then also, I don’t know, it just makes me … feel a part of this community.

AP: And how about you, representing Hermione?

STANTON: I’ve dreamt of that since a really young age, and I’ve always looked up to all of the people who played Hermione, like Emma Watson and all those people.

AP: Are you aware how huge it is around the world?

TREADAWAY: I don’t think we’ll really feel that until it comes out, I guess, because that just makes it more unreal.

LESTER: It’s so popular around the world, which makes it more unreal that so many people are going to be interested in this and we don’t even realize it, yeah, we can’t even process this.

AP: So is acting the way forward for you now? Would you like to continue doing this?

TREADAWAY: Yeah, definitely — I mean on this, it never really felt like pushing yourself to do something, it wasn’t work, it felt like an enjoyable experience and you’ve got something to see at the end of it.

STANTON: I’d love to act, yeah, definitely. And I think, like Frankie said, I mean, just being part of the audio series is incredible. And yeah, can’t wait to do more.

LESTER: I think it is for me because I always say it’s not work if you do something that you love and, honestly, I love acting so much. It makes me feel happy and it makes me feel like my true self and … I think it is the way forward just to keep going and do a lot of jobs, hopefully.

AP: And you’re all bonded now aren’t you?

    ALL: Yeah.

    LESTER: The proper trio.

When it comes to street style stars, few individuals have garnered as much attention as Alexa Chung. The English It girl created the blueprint for today’s social media influencers, parlaying a permanent seat in the fashion front row to brand collaborations and eventually her own label. But Chung’s path to success actually began in the modeling world, where she got an early start appearing in teen magazines before landing a gig as the co-host of the British television program Popworld in 2006. Within five years, Chung’s fashion savvy would make her a global sensation, bringing with it a list of milestone achievements that included an eponymous Mulberry handbag, a Madewell collaboration and a British Vogue cover—all in just three months.

“It’s all about effortlessness. It’s all about looking underdone,” Chung said in a 2010 interview with the New York Times when discussing her signature beauty look of tousled hair and various stages of overgrown fringe. That effortless approach has always applied to her sartorial choices as well, where Chung is as likely to turn to rock stars like Mick Jagger and George Harrison for inspiration as she is to female style icons like Jane Birkin or Kate Moss (though she’s certainly looked to both of them, too). “As much as I love denim and men’s tailoring, I also have this weird affection for very girly, saccharine gowns and dresses,” Chung has said of her styling choices, which often blend masculine and feminine pieces in unexpected ways.

While Chung’s red carpet looks often embraced those girlish elements with the detailed gowns expected of more formal events, her off-duty moments have always served as a perfect way to showcase the amalgamation of her style references. With a wardrobe packed full of vintage finds, casual denim and coveted designer pieces, Chung’s effortlessly cool street style looks always had a touch of accessibility to them, too—something that no doubt helped her to become a style icon in her own right.

Whether you’re looking for a bit of style inspiration or feeling nostalgic for early 2000s fashion, take a look back at some of Chung’s most memorable off-duty fashion moments.

The official launch of Mulberry’s Alexa handbag (named after and inspired by Chung, of course) was still be a few months away, but as the British brand’s muse, Chung got to debut the bag a little early during New York Fashion Week. The it bag of the aughts, Mulberry would go on to relaunch the bag more than a decade later as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

Trench coats featured prominently in Chung’s wardrobe over the years, but until she started designing her own (both with her namesake label and as collaborations with other brands), a classic Burberry trench was her go-to. For the fashion house’s spring 2010 show (she also served as the afterparty’s DJ), Chung paired her trench with another classic: a little black dress, which she accessorized with a pair of black boots to sit front row with celebrities like Emma Watson and Mary-Kate Olsen.

At first glance, Chung appears to be in a typical Chanel ensemble, but a closer look reveals that she opted to pair her grey Chanel tweed jacket with lace-trimmed bicycle shorts (and polka-dot printed tights) to attend Paris Fashion Week.

Perhaps most central to Chung’s wardrobe is denim in its many forms. “It’s weird how much I’m obsessed with it,” she told British Vogue, where she even wrote an entire column dedicated to the “most practical and versatile of materials.” Photographed in Paris on her way to the Stella McCartney spring 2012 show, Chung opted for a denim minidress, which she paired with snakeskin platform heels.

There wasn’t a look too casual for Chung to sport front row, as evidenced by this ultra-effortless outfit that she wore during London Fashion Week. Black skinny jeans may have slightly dated the look, but Chung’s Bella Freud sweater, ankle boots and utility jacket would work just as well today.

To attend the Topshop Unique show in 2014, Chung wore a look from the brand that included a leopard print skirt and lemon yellow mock turtleneck sweater. A soft pink lip and Brigitte Bardot-style pigtails that were tied off with pink bows played up the television presenter’s post-summer tan, and she accessorized with a pair of Prada ballet flats and a pink Chanel Milk Carton crossbody bag.

Miu Miu was a show not-to-be-missed for Chung, who has praised designer Miuccia Prada, saying that she expertly “plays with tropes, [and] kind of redefines femininity each time.” That ability to experiment with different fashion elements was key for Chung as well, who introduced a new way to wear a pink slip dress at the spring 2017 show by pairing it with leather and fringe. Chung’s Western-inspired jacket included silver fringe and crystal embellishments throughout, and she completed the look with black lace-up boots.

In the video, Watson pulls this out of her makeup bag and says, “I found this freckle pen recently, which I absolutely love and use in the winter when my freckles kind of go away and I want to bring out the ones on my nose.”

Faux freckles are having a moment right now. Well, actually, they’ve been having a moment for a while. So, it’s no surprise that this is a best-selling product. The inky marker tip is soaked in a lightweight, subtle, and easily blendable formula. • Drew Barrymore Stalking Suspect Barges In Fashion Show Seeking Emma Watson: Police

Drew Barrymore Stalking Suspect Barges In Fashion Show Seeking Emma Watson: Police

NEW YORK (AP) — A man accused of repeatedly stalking celebrities has been arrested for barging into a dressing room at a New York City fashion show and screaming that he wanted to marry actor Emma Watson, authorities said.

Chad Michael Busto, who was arrested last month after a run-in with Drew Barrymore, pleaded not guilty Saturday to criminal trespass and disorderly conduct charges in the incident last week at the Ralph Lauren show at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Busto, 43, was released without bail. His next court date is Oct. 2. A message seeking comment was left with a lawyer listed for him on court records.

According to prosecutors, Busto entered the fashion show dressing room Friday night and screamed: “I want to marry Emma Watson. Let me speak to Emma Watson. Let me take a photo with Emma Watson.”

Busto did not have permission to be at the fashion show, became irate when he was asked to leave and refused to do so, police said. The outburst disrupted preparations for the event, part of the biannual New York Fashion Week, prosecutors said.

It wasn’t clear if Watson, known for starring roles in the “Harry Potter” and live action “Beauty and the Beast” films, attended the fashion show. A message seeking comment was left with her representatives.

Last month, a man identifying himself as Busto rushed a Manhattan stage where Barrymore was interviewing singer and actor Reneé Rapp. Rapp helped guide Barrymore to safety and security guards escorted the man out of the theater.

Days later, Busto was arrested in the Hamptons and charged with stalking after police say he was spotted going door-to-door asking for directions to Barrymore’s home. The “Scream” actor and “Drew Barrymore Show” TV host was not there at the time.

Last week, after Busto failed to show up to be fitted for a court-ordered GPS monitor under the terms of his release, a Southampton judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

Busto, who’s been linked to addresses of shelters and church ministries in California and Washington, D.C., has a history of arrests and bizarre behavior. His record includes prior arrests for trespassing, disorderly conduct and indecent exposure.

In a handwritten lawsuit last year, Busto claimed he’d been granted ownership of the Hilton hotels chain. That case was swiftly dismissed.

Other lawsuits under Busto’s name include one seeking to challenge the prison sentences of all criminal defendants in “All prisons on Planet Earth.”

In a 2021 court filing, Busto wrote that he was “Born by Force” and that his parents are “More Guilty for My Entire Existence as Two Humans Than the One (Sort of) Human I am Generally Considered to Be!”

Another Busto court filing consisted mostly of Pokémon cards.

  • Drew Barrymore’s alleged stalker arrested after hunting for Emma Watson in N.Y. – National | Globalnews.ca

Drew Barrymore’s alleged stalker arrested after hunting for Emma Watson in N.Y. – National | Globalnews.ca

The man charged last month with stalking Drew Barrymore has been arrested after he broke into a dressing room at New York Fashion Week and demanded to see Emma Watson.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Kings County court, Chad Michael Busto of Washington, D.C. entered the backstage area of an A-list fashion show at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Sept. 8.

The filing notes Busto’s entry was unauthorized and that the entire event was hosted on an enclosed property to prevent “intruders.”

Once backstage, police claim Busto entered a private dressing area and demanded numerous times to see Watson.

Busto allegedly shouted at the fashion show employees in the dressing room, repeating: “I want to marry Emma Watson. Let me speak to Emma Watson. Let me take a photo with Emma Watson.”

Authorities said Busto broke into the event “with intent to cause public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm.”

He was arrested and charged with two counts of trespassing and two counts of disorderly conduct. He has pleaded not guilty.

NBC News reported Busto was given a supervised release the day after his arrest.

It is not yet clear how Busto was able to access the fashion event. It is also unclear if Watson was in attendance. She has not commented publicly on the situation.

Prior to his attempt to find the Harry Potter actor, Busto did not attend his appointment to be fitted with an ankle monitor, Fox News reported. He was ordered to wear one after he was arrested in August for trying to find Barrymore’s Long Island home.

Police said Busto was seen going door-to-door while “riding a bicycle up into private driveways and stating to area residents that he was looking for Drew Barrymore’s residence.”

He was charged with fourth degree stalking, a class B misdemeanour.

Only three days before his arrest, Busto also crashed an event at the 92nd Street Y in New York City where Barrymore was speaking.

While Barrymore was leading a discussion with actor and singer Reneé Rapp about her newest album, Busto rushed the stage and demanded to speak to Barrymore.

“I’m Chad Michael Busto, you know who I am,” he said. “I need to see you at some point while I’m here in New York.”

Rapp quickly stood up when Busto approached the stage. She stood in front of Barrymore before taking the 50 First Dates actor by the arm and leading her off stage.

This week, Barrymore has been the subject of intense criticism over her decision to resume production of her daytime talk show The Drew Barrymore Show, despite the ongoing writers’ strike. While the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) is on strike, The Drew Barrymore Show cannot employ any WGA writers.

Emma Watson Twirls on the Red Carpet in a Bridal-White Naked Dress

Emma Watson made a rare appearance at New York Fashion Week dressed to the nines in Dior Haute Couture for the second annual Soho House Awards. The ceremony, which took place at Dumbo House, began with a red carpet that she walked with her brother, Alex. The 33-year-old “Harry Potter” star and activist recently launched Renais Spirits with Alex, and is also the current face of Prada Beauty, so it’s no surprise to see her stepping onto the scene amidst all the celebrity front row action and party circuit.

Her chosen design hails from Dior’s Fall/Winter 2023 Couture collection, consisting of a geometric fishnet top that extends into fringe strands woven with pearls and opaline beads, and the star layered it over a long pleated skirt made from chalk silk chiffon. The look could easily be mistaken for bridal, especially when teamed with diamond drop pearls, white pumps, and a matching quilted clutch. Watson opted for a natural beauty look with soft makeup and peach-tinted cheeks, and her hair was swept up into a side-parted bun with loose waves extending toward her shoulders.

Watson is currently rumored to be dating Proper Snacks cofounder Ryan Kohn after reportedly splitting from Brandon Green, the son of British fashion businessman Sir Phillip Green, in early 2023. She attended Wimbledon in July with Alex, coordinating with him in peach linen separates and sporting a classic French manicure. On Sept. 5, she sat next to Vogue’s Anna Wintour at the US Open, showing off her own brand of quiet luxury.

Ariana Grande and Emma Watson Just Made These the New Fall It Shoes at Wimbledon

As you’ve probably noticed, celebrities love Wimbledon, and the big matches, in particular, draw some of the biggest celebrities. That was certainly the case over the weekend when Ariana Grande and Emma Watson, among many others, attended the men’s finals. Photographers are everywhere during these matches and accordingly, the attendees dress to the nines—Grande and Watson included.

Both Grande and Watson dressed elegantly for the match, but they had a little fun with their shoe choice. They each opted to wear Loewe’s Toy Pumps—Grande in black to accompany her gray sweater and full skirt, and Watson in white to complement her coral trousers and sleeveless white top. As with most of Loewe’s shoes, the heels are quite whimsical, and feature a soft square toe and a heel that resembles an old-timey “toy”.

The heels are selling out everywhere, so if you want to splurge on a pair for yourself a head of fall, you might want to act fast. Shop them below.

  • Emma Watson Admits She ‘Wasn’t Very Happy’ Before Stepping Away From Acting

Emma Watson Admits She ‘Wasn’t Very Happy’ Before Stepping Away From Acting

    By Paige Gawley, ETOnline.com.

Emma Watson is opening up about a challenging time in her life. In an interview with Financial Times, Watson, who hasn’t starred in a movie since 2018’s “Little Women”, reveals she “wasn’t very happy” when she was working as an actress.

“I think I felt a bit caged,” Watson, 33, explains. “The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over. To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process.”

“I was held accountable in a way that I began to find really frustrating, because I didn’t have a voice, I didn’t have a say,” she continues. “And I started to realize that I only wanted to stand in front of things where if someone was going to give me flak about it, I could say, in a way that didn’t make me hate myself, ‘Yes, I screwed up, it was my decision, I should have done better.’”

Even so, Watson tells the outlet that she will “absolutely” return to acting, beginning with a movie that’s scheduled to begin shooting early next year.

“I’m happy to sit and wait for the next right thing. I love what I do. It’s finding a way to do it where I don’t have to fracture myself into different faces and people,” she explains. “And I just don’t want to switch into robot mode anymore.”

When she was busy with “Harry Potter” and other projects, Watson didn’t often get to return to her family’s vineyard, the site where they make Renais, their recently launched gin.

“There was definitely a gap when Alex took more of a role here,” Watson says of her younger brother, the founder of the gin brand. “But now that I’m not making films every year there’s a bit more time to play with. For me, getting involved with the creative side of the gin has been fun because I have a voice and I can bring everything that I’ve learnt to help. Alex is the expert on gin, and dad is the expert on wine, but it’s really nice to be asked to be involved.”

For the actress, returning to France with her brother and father, Chris Watson, allows her to enjoy the “culture here of the harvest.”

“I like coming together with everyone,” she explains. “I like the rituals around it and the history and the connection with the people here. For me it’s about family and community and it makes me feel grounded that there’s somewhere I can come back to, year after year after year.”

  • Millie Bobby Brown and Lindsay Lohan: A Teen Star Correlation

Millie Bobby Brown and Lindsay Lohan: A Teen Star Correlation

Being that Lindsay Lohan was the same age as Millie Bobby Brown when her career was reaching a zenith, it seems somewhat fitting (or at least cyclical) that both should have a movie out on Netflix at the same time. While the former’s “film” (a schlock-y Hallmark wannabe) is further proof that she made a career out of simply being “teenaged,” the latter’s proves that she has more enduring staying power. And, to be frank, more talent and acting range. Both qualities have been shown in the short length of her career, which is starting to expand more heavily into film with the end of Stranger Things on the horizon—Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2 being part of that steady segue.

And yes, Brown, like Lohan, seems to understand the value of clinging to the Netflix tit for work, even amid cries of the online film and TV giant “not being what it once was.” Sort of like Lohan herself, whose steady stream of hits only flowed when she was a youth, mainly as a result of sucking on Disney’s tit instead of Netflix’s (then still mailing out DVDs to subscribers). This included a succession of “feel-good” movies that started with The Parent Trap in 1998 and continued at the dawn of the 00s with Life-Size, Get A Clue, Freaky Friday and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. All, of course, Disney-backed endeavors that complicated things when Lohan opted to embark upon the requisite Disney teen star “gone bad” route. Right around the time she decided to reteam with the juggernaut for the production of Herbie: Fully Loaded (after Paramount released Mean Girls in ’04).

A title that, obviously, left plenty of room for the tabloids to jestingly riff off of as Lohan was hospitalized for “exhaustion” and, oh yeah, an infected kidney. At the same time filming was going on, her partying (a.k.a. going out to clubs back when they were still bankable due to people actually being sentient, sexual creatures) was coming under more scrutiny. After all, she had just turned eighteen and was far more prone to wanting to sow the oats that being a highly-paid actress permitted (see: her being on the cover of a May ’04 Us Weekly with the headline, “Teens Gone Wild: Older men, all-night partying, extreme PDA…”). Plus, just as Britney and the Olsen twins before her, the obsession with Lohan “being legal” was part of the Nabokovian bread and butter that sold magazines in the late 90s and 00s. Lohan even appeared on an issue of Rolling Stone the year she turned eighteen with the headline, “Lindsay Lohan: Hot, Ready and Legal!”

In the decade when Millie Bobby Brown would come of age in her fame, the nascent #MeToo movement bubbled to the surface in 2017, when Brown was thirteen years old and one year into her stint as Eleven on Stranger Things. By 2020, the year of her sixteenth birthday (in addition to Miss Rona’s havoc), Brown had had enough of the overt sexualization of her body despite being a child. Something that Billie Eilish avoided full-stop by covering her own in baggy clothing that spoke to her being the twenty-first century ideal of a sexless pop star. Brown wasn’t exactly “flashing it” either, least of all à la Britney or even Lindsay—usually while they were out drinking and drugging to the tabloids’ (and TMZ’s) delight.

Brown did none of these things, and was not nearly as ridiculed or hounded as someone such as Lohan. Yet Brown grew up in an era where so much less is “tolerated.” Including the acceptance of men fetishizing underage girls in this way no longer being so “welcomed” by the media. Hence, the freedom of Brown being able to declare on her Instagram (a tool that 00s teen stars didn’t have the luxury to access), “There are moments I get frustrated from the inaccuracy, inappropriate comments, sexualization, and unnecessary insults that ultimately have resulted in pain and insecurity for me.”

On one level, somebody like Lohan would probably want to say, “Bitch, you don’t know from inaccuracy, inappropriate comments, sexualization or unnecessary insults.” On another, maybe Lohan can take comfort in having paved the way for subsequent teen stars to have far less of a hard time (all while narcissistically assuming it’s still “so hard”). Brown, too, wants to offer that courtesy to subsequent generations of famous teen girls, as made clear when she added to her sixteenth birthday comment, “I feel like change needs to happen for not only this generation but the next. Our world needs kindness and support in order for us children to grow and succeed.”

Alas, it appears as though the bullying nature of tabloid journalism (parading as newsworthy events) has only transferred with more unmitigated vengeance to the online landscape. The germinal example of this being Perez Hilton’s illustrious blog (that was, let’s be honest, far more deliciously cunty in the 00s). An entity that came full-circle when both Perez and Lindsay, at one of her many nadirs in 2012, decided to use one another to their respective advantage by cameo’ing on an episode of Glee called “Nationals.” And, speaking of gays, Brown’s closest brush with intense online bullying was when a series of memes attributing her with homophobic quotes that she never said bombarded her Twitter account. Then just fourteen, Brown decided to quit the medium (long before it was chic to do so in 2022). Lohan, simultaneously loving and hating celebrity, likely wouldn’t have “quit” being present in magazines had it even been an option.

Brown and Lohan’s divergence when it comes to romantic prudence is also markedly different. For while Lohan was dating Wilmer Valderrama—undoubtedly before she turned eighteen—a notorious player with a penchant for courting women with age gaps (though not to the same extent as Leonardo DiCaprio or Jake Gyllenhaal), Brown has kept it decidedly staid and age-appropriate with her current boyfriend, Jake Bongiovi (the spelling of which is somehow supposed to make us forget he’s Jon Bon Jovi’s son). Lohan’s mistake with her first high-profile romance at the apex of her career didn’t account for how Valderrama would, just a year after the breakup, describe, among other details to Howard Stern, that Lindsay was “a big fan of waxing.” So yeah, exactly the type of sleaze someone should be dating when they’re tabloid fodder already. That Brown is taken more seriously as an actress than Lohan ever was has also contributed to the “safe space” form of her celebrity. Less laughingstock, more tissue box stock (that’s a tear reference, not a cum one).

However, going back to the similarities between Lohan and Brown, the ages at which each actress was when they got their first major start also eerily align, for Brown was twelve when Stranger Things debuted, and so was Lohan when The Parent Trap arrived in theaters. What’s more, when Lohan was seventeen and eighteen, her two biggest movies came out—Freaky Friday (2003) and Mean Girls (2004), respectively. Brown has also released her two biggest movies (so far) around the same age, being sixteen when Enola Holmes came out and eighteen upon the arrival of Enola Holmes 2.

In noticeable contrast to Lohan, Brown’s future beyond teen stardom seems far brighter (more like Emma Watson’s post-Harry Potter…at least Serious Roles-wise). Not just because she has that arcane aura of “British dignity” (ironic considering how undignified that country is), but because she’s grown up in a generation that has proven itself to be the antithesis of millennial youth values: drinking and clubbing. To boot, Brown also has the advantage of “setting the record straight” on social media that no millennial star ever had.
