Missy Elliott Electrifies, Jimmy Page Surprises, Bernie Taupin Calls Out the Elephant in the Room: Essential Moments From the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Show

    [ad_1]

Four hours and 22 minutes is a long time to be doing anything except sleeping, even watching a state-of-the-art Rock and Roll Hall of Fame awards show that included Willie Nelson, Elton John, Sheryl Crow, Jimmy Page, Stevie Nicks and many more.

Yet it’s a testament to the almost superhuman talent and vision of Missy Elliott that as the show hit the four-hour mark, she had the entire audience out of their seats for a visually and musically explosive medley of her greatest hits — including “Get Ur Freak On,” “The Rain” and the closer, “Lose Control” — as she rocked the stage in an all-gold glitter suit accompanied by rappers, a DJ, approximately 30 lithely limbed dancers and an eye-popping video presentation that spanned the entire width of the Barclays Center floor. This will come as no surprise to anyone who’s been lucky enough to see a performance from the first female rapper inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but it’s something we see far too infrequently these days. She even noted that the evening was the first time her mother had seen her perform live, “Because I didn’t want her to see me talking about bitches and a one-minute man.”

But before you skip to the end of the show, which was livestreamed on Disney+ for the first time and is available for playback now, see below for the other essential moments. Serious music fans will probably want to watch the whole thing — we’re skipping over performances from Sheryl Crow (with Nicks, Olivia Rodrigo and Peter Frampton), Chaka Khan (including a surreal duet with Sia), tributes to pioneering hip-hop DJ Kool Herc, Zelig-like musician Al Kooper and “Soul Train” founder Don Cornelius and more — but for those without four hours and 22 minutes to spare, dig in for a guide below.

Carrie Underwood’s Revelatory George Michael Cover

The late George Michael was inducted by Andrew Ridgely, his childhood friend and former bandmate in Wham!, who few people recognized at first due to his long-since-receded hairline. A trio of performances followed, with Miguel starting with a strong “Careless Whisper” (accompanied by the E Street Band’s Jake Clemons on sax), a mediocre “Faith” from Adam Levine, and finally, a stunning version of “One More Try” from Carrie Underwood, who brought the house down with an emotional, soaring performance that makes you wonder why she doesn’t sing songs like that all the time. The tribute video also featured some hilarious quotes from Michael particularly when he said the two records he first owned as a child were by the Supremes and Tom Jones, noting that his music was somewhere between the two.

New Edition Create a Spinners Tribute Band for the Ages

Anyone who grew up near an FM radio in America during the 1970s heard tons of R&B, and one of the most prominent groups were the Spinners. For a medley of three of their biggest hits, New Edition were clad in black slacks and matching velour maroon jackets, and had their synchronized dance steps down. Hearing Bobby Brown wail on “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” was a totally unexpected but resonant moment.

St. Vincent Bravely Runs Up That Hill

In another unexpected pairing, Kate Bush — who skipped the ceremony but posted a touching note of thanks — was inducted by Outkast’s Big Boi, who joked, “I feel like the White House Press Secretary for Kate Bush.” After speaking of his lifelong fandom and saying “I’m the kid in ‘Stranger Things’” (a nod to the show that brought the decades-old song to new levels of popularity), he said, “What I love about Kate’s music is that you never know what you’re going to hear next.” The tribute video was fascinating, combining clips of Bush with testimonials from Peter Gabriel, and especially Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, who essentially discovered her when she was a teenager and recalled going to her house, meeting her family and then she played him “forty or fifty songs.” St. Vincent then showed just how difficult those songs are to sing, turning in a solid, brave and relatively low-key take on “Running Up That Hill” in which she wisely didn’t try to mimic Bush’s intensity.

Willie Nelson Gets a Hilarious Introduction From Dave Matthews and Performs With Chris Stapleton and Sheryl Crow

There is probably no living songwriter with a catalog that can match Willie Nelson’s, and not many past ones either. Now 90, as Dave Matthews noted in his introduction, he wrote his first song in 1940, saw his “Crazy” recorded by Patsy Cline in 1961, and has released 72 albums. Somehow, he has made it all this way while being a marijuana smoker of magnitude. “The first time I met Willie,” Matthews recalled, “I got so high I forgot how to breathe. And then we got more high, and then we got even more high, and then Willie said, ‘Is everybody high?’” Nelson took the stage and played three songs, accompanied by Chris Stapleton (on “Whiskey River”), Sheryl Crow (“On Crazy”) and “On the Road Again” with both and Matthews — his voice was a little unsteady and he played seated, but he gave a very gracious thank-you speech and peeled off two solos on his legendary battered nylon-string guitar.

A Surprise Performance From Jimmy Page

Link Wray, who died in 2005, was such a foundational pioneer of rock and roll guitar that most guitarists these days don’t know who he was. Yet the video that aired featured everyone from Jimmy Page and Iggy Pop to Jeff Beck and Robbie Robertson paying worshipful homage, and the audience rocked to their feet when, just after he’d appeared in the video inducting Wray, Page suddenly appeared on stage, brandishing his legendary Gibson double-neck guitar, and played a slinky, reverent version of Wray’s “Rumble,” a song you know even if you think you don’t.

Bernie Taupin Addresses the Elephant in the Room

Elton John reeled off an oft-told story about his lyricist and “best friend of 65 years,” but the tale was no less fresh as he marveled at their progression between his first album and second — “How did we take that leap in such a short time?” — and noted that although they didn’t really have an argument during their peak years, “He was often disgusted with my behavior.” And yet he also noted that they recently completed an album that “is going to surprise the shit out of you.”

During Taupin’s acceptance speech, some three hours into the show, the moment finally came: He said how honored he was to be sharing the honor with so many “articulate” (air quotes) women and Black artists — the evening’s only direct reference to Rolling Stone and Hall of Fame founder Jann Wenner’s recent tasteless comments that got him ejected from the Hall’s board.

Robbie Robertson Gets a Generation-Spanning Tribute From Elton John, Chris Stapleton, Sheryl Crow and Brittany Howard

The Hall digs deep for its “In Memoriam” segment, honoring many relatively little-known bandmembers in addition to superstars. And in a year when a sobering number of great musicians died, it seemed inappropriate to honor just one — until the segment closed with a photo of the Band’s Robbie Robertson and the house band kicked into the group’s 1968 classic “The Weight.” Four generations of singers — Elton John, Sheryl Crow, Chris Stapleton and Brittany Howard — each took a verse and then joined together for the song’s concluding fifth verse, showing in stunning fashion just how foundational the Band and that song were for all of them.

Even in Their Absence, Rage Against the Machine Raged

Since they first parted ways in 2000, Rage Against the Machine have never been there when you needed them. They sat out the George W. Bush years, reunited for tours during the Obama administration, and were a couple of dates into a long-overdue reunion tour last summer when singer Zack de la Rocha injured his knee and the tour was postponed indefinitely. Yet the group’s explosive influence was vividly detailed in the electrifying tribute video, in Ice-T’s introductory speech — “I think Rage has the greatest rock lyric of all time: ‘Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me’” — and guitarist Tom Morello’s acceptance speech. Always an inspired speaker, he noted that the often-feuding bandmembers have “differing perspectives on a lot of things, including being inducted,” but paid tribute not only to them but also the “fifth member of the band” — the group’s fans — and noted that the presidents of Chile and Finland “have all spent time in our mosh pits.”

His speech gained momentum as he continued, “Can music change the world? The whole fucking aim is to change the world!” and finished by exhorting people to make a difference in whatever way they can, by activism or forming a band or simply following their conscience instead of orders. “It’s time to change the world, brothers and sisters,” he concluded, “or at the very least stir up a shitload of trouble.”

As fans exited the venue after a very long night, they saw the following words grafitti’d on a boarded-up window across Flatbush Avenue: “THANK YOU RATM.”

How much Taylor Swift mania can we take? Just wait — there’s still a long way to go – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Every generation or so, a major artist enters what’s called their imperial phase, a period of their career where they can’t seem to do anything wrong. Everything aligns perfectly and it seems that the universe now revolves around that act. Right now that artist is Taylor Swift.

This kind of mania is not entirely new. We saw similar imperial phases with The Rolling Stones (1972, 1980, 1989), Led Zeppelin (1971-75), Elton John (1971-1975), Michael Jackson (1983-1992), Madonna (1986-1992), U2 (1987-1992 and also perhaps during the 360 Tour of 2009-11), and both Backstreet Boys and NSYNC (1996-2001). Billy Joel remarked, “The only thing I can compare it to is the phenomenon of Beatlemania [in the 60s].”

The reasons for Swift’s turn at the very top of pop culture are complex. She’s a top-flight songwriter and performer. As the defacto CEO of her empire, she’s been brilliant, carefully crafting and protecting her image, overseeing all the marketing, planning the Eras Tour, and making some savvy business decisions when it comes to issuing new music, charitable initiatives, and dropping just the right amount of benevolence at exactly the right time. Taylor has set all kinds of chart records with her albums (more Number One albums in the Billboard Top 200 than any other woman, someone who’s had four albums in the Top 10 at the same time, etc.) It’s estimated that the nightly box office on this tour is as much as US$14 million.

According to the New York Times, the overall economic benefits to North America will be about US$4.6 billion: tickets, merch, airfare, hotel, parking, restaurants, drinks, even nail salons for fans who want to look sharp for the show. That’s about the same economic impact as the Olympic Games had on Beijing in 2008.

It all makes for great media coverage that encompasses everything from woman power to the spin-off economic benefits being generated by this tour (hotels for Toronto are pretty much already sold out for her visit in November 2024). Here’s a quote from Dan Eastwood of online research company QuestionPro: “If Taylor Swift were an economy, she’d be bigger than 50 countries; if she was a corporation, her Net Promoter Score would make her the fourth most admired brand, and her loyalty numbers mimic those of subjects to a royal crown.”

So yeah, she’s big. And popular. And powerful. But let’s break this down a bit.

The current Tay-Tay mania can be partly attributed to the lack of a centre in popular culture. The internet has fractured everything, meaning that there’s very little we all know about and agree upon — at least compared to the old days. In the absence of any true competition, an event like Taylor Swift creates a gravity well on the order of a supermassive black hole, sucking everything in and demanding more and more attention. It’s like the Barbie movie: a global cultural juggernaut but less pink.

    Story continues below advertisement

And because everyone seems to be talking about Taylor, fear of missing out becomes a real thing. Even casual fans- — and even non-fans — are caught up in the confusing excitement. “What’s going on here? What am I missing? Everyone else is getting involved, so shouldn’t I?” No one wants to be left out, hence the ever-growing interest and coverage. It’s like a hurricane caught over some freakishly hot Atlantic water. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger, obliterating everything in its path.

Which brings me to this: Have you noticed how there’s been very little negative coverage of the Eras Tour? Yes, there have been stories about convoluted Ticketmaster ticket-purchasing procedures, servers melting down, fans who were sold “obstructed view/listen only” seats, hotels and parking lots charging usurious prices (it cost US$120 to park at a surface lot for the shows in Seattle), and minor logistical hiccups, but have you seen anyone anywhere in the media criticize Tay-Tay? Why not?

Easy. No one wants to incur the wrath of Swifties, Taylor’s formidable and intensely loyal and often combative fanbase. Only the BTS Army and Beyoncé’s BeyHive come close in strength and numbers. And woe be to those who mess with Taylor because that brings millions of Swifties to the battlefield. Even the New York Times took note of this.

If you’re publicly identified as an Enemy of Taylor — or even someone who just doesn’t pay Swift the proper respect — prepare for a social media attack of nuclear proportions up to and including doxing and death threats. One writer critical of the Eras Tour was sent anti-gay slurs and a campaign was launched to have that person fired from their job as a reporter. And has Taylor said anything about this stan behaviour? No. Yet there’s been little note made of that in the media. With no one saying anything bad — even if it may be deserved — it’s nothing but sunshine and chocolates and dancing unicorns.

    Story continues below advertisement

Swift has also been able to both dodge criticism and go on the offensive when she’s felt wronged — very successfully, too. That includes everything from the issues surrounding the master tapes of her original albums to writing songs about bad real-life boyfriends. There are at least 31 of those. Nothing is ever her fault it seems. Her fans will back her up on that, too.

Look, the Eras Tour is definitely special, the likes of which we won’t see for a long, long time. It delivers great value for fans: three hours, over 40 songs, and a ton of high-end production.

By the time the 146 shows wrap up late next year — five continents, all stadium gigs, by the way; no mere arenas for Taylor — the total gross is projected to be beyond US$1.4 billion, eclipsing Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. That brought in US$939 million during its 328-show run that extended from the fall of 2018 to this past summer. The average box office gross was a mere US$2.85 million. When the lights finally go out after the sixth Rogers Centre show in Toronto in November 2024, the Eras Tour will likely have been seen by more than nine million people. That’ll handily beat Ed Sheeran’s Divide Tour, which played in front of 8.7 million people. But it took two years and 255 shows to accomplish that.

Barring any illness, scandal, extinction-level asteroid strike, or mass coronal ejection that will wipe out the world’s electrical infrastructure, Taylor mania is going to be with us for at least another year. And if you’re in Toronto and you’re not going to any of the shows, I’d make plans to get out between Nov. 14 and Nov. 23, 2024. It’s going to be impossible.

    Story continues below advertisement

Meanwhile, everyone will continue to want a piece of Tay-Tay. To commemorate the end of the U.S. leg of the tour, Starbucks created a 122-track playlist called “Starbucks Lovers” (note the reference to some misheard lyrics in the song Blank Space) that’s running in stores across the U.S.

If that’s not enough, there are Swift-inspired coffee drinks that will probably push back the return of pumpkin spice latte by a few weeks. That won’t sit well with some people. They’d just better not complain because, you know, Swifties.

After more than 50 years as a successful touring artist, the Rocket Man is finally going home.

During the last concert of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour on Saturday, Elton John called performing for his dedicated fans his “lifeblood,” and thanked them for supporting his lengthy career.

The iconic 76-year-old musician previously announced the show at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden would be his last. John began the tour in 2018 and performed 330 shows around the globe. (The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour was halted for nearly two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

John was on stage for two-and-a-half hours on Saturday and played 23 hit tunes in four different campy, glittering outfits.

While sitting at his grand piano, John told the crowd of thousands how much “I adore to play live.”

“It’s been my lifeblood to play for you guys and you’ve been absolutely magnificent,” he continued.

John thanked his “kick-ass” band for the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin called in to John’s concert while on stage at his own show in Gothenburg, Sweden, on the same night.

Martin, 46, praised John’s extensive and much-loved career to his own audience.

“We want to say from all of us here, all the artists you’ve loved and inspired and helped — we love you so much, we’re so grateful for everything you’ve done for us,” Martin said amid raucous applause.

Martin also noted John’s lifelong work with his AIDS foundation, his advocacy for the LGBTQ2+ community and his fashion influence.

“We love you so much, happy retirement and we’re going to miss you so much,” Martin said.

Before closing the show with his song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John said: “I’ve had the most wonderful career, beyond belief. Fifty-two years of pure joy playing music, how lucky am I to play music?”

“But I wouldn’t be sitting here if it wasn’t for you. You bought the singles, albums and CDs and, more importantly, you bought the tickets to the shows and you know how I love to play live,” he said to his fans. “I will never forget you guys.”

Though the Stockholm show marked the end of his touring career, John said he may still perform in a “one-off thing.”

On Instagram, the five-time Grammy winner shared several posts about his 330-show run. One video contained a clip of his 2018 interview with Anderson Cooper where he announced he would retire after the tour.

“What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it. Tonight is the final night,” John wrote.

Celebrities and fans alike have congratulated John on the end of his tour.

Donatella Versace commented on John’s Instagram post, writing, “I love you so much @eltonjohn. I will forever be proud of your exceptional achievements- you are a true genius.”

Singer Brandi Carlisle also wrote, “You did it Captain! incredible work ethic and stamina.”

In a separate press release to mark the end of his tour, John echoed his own bittersweet farewell.

“When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn’t have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and the highs and lows this tour — and the whole world — would have experienced in the next 5 years,” he wrote.

“I’m trying to process it, and I don’t think it will sink in for a while yet that I’m finally finished touring. I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss the fans and how much their support has humbled me — it will stay with me forever.”

Elton John Wraps Up Farewell Tour With ‘Magical’ Show: ‘What A Journey’ It’s Been

    [ad_1]

Elton John closed out his farewell tour after nearly five years and 333 concerts with a “magical” show in Stockholm on Saturday.

John, whose “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour is the highest-grossing tour of all-time, ended his 50-plus years of touring with a hit-filled setlist at Tele2 Arena.

The iconic singer, who kicked off the tour in 2018, thanked over 6.25 million fans for joining him on the “journey” ahead of the show.

“What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

John sailed through several numbers at the show on Saturday including “Bennie and the Jets,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Candle in the Wind” and “Rocket Man,” BBC reported.

Coldplay dropped into John’s concert via video, as well, as the band showed the singer love and performed “Rocket Man” in Gothenburg, Sweden on the same night.

“Elton, we want to say, from all of us here, from all the bands and all the artists that you’ve loved and inspired and helped, we just love you so much, we’re so grateful for everything you’ve done for us,” said Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

The tour’s conclusion arrives just under two weeks after John performed the final U.K. show of his tour with a headlining set at Glastonbury Festival.

John told fans on Saturday that he would never be touring again but remained open to the possibility of doing “something in the future” such as one-off shows.

John, in a statement shared by Consequence, said he “couldn’t have foreseen” the twists and turns along with the highs and lows on the tour.

“And every step of the way, my fans have been there. They have stuck with me, they have supported me, they have been patient, and they have kept turning out for every single last show,” John said.

“Tonight has been magical. I’m trying to process it, and I don’t think it will sink in for a while yet that I’m finally finished touring. I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss the fans and how much their support has humbled me – it will stay with me forever.”

John closed his show with a performance of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” after thanking fans – and his family – for their support.

“It’s been my lifeblood to play for you guys and you’ve been absolutely magnificent, thank you,” John told the crowd.

“I will never forget you guys, I’ve played so many concerts how could I forget. You’re in my head, my heart and my soul. And I thank you so much.”

  • $17 Million Waterfront Villa Revels In The Beauty Of Lake Como, Italy

$17 Million Waterfront Villa Revels In The Beauty Of Lake Como, Italy

    [ad_1]

Moltrasio has long been a popular destination on the western shore of Lake Como, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy.

The mountain and lakeside town, made up of multiple villages, is known for its luxurious villas, historic churches and mild, sunny weather.

Among notables to frequent the area over the centuries have been Napoleon Bonaparte, opera composer Vincenzo Bellini and Winston Churchill. In more recent years, the late fashion designer Gianni Versace bought and restored a villa near Moltrasio where he played host to such pop icons as Sir Elton John, Sting and Madonna.

This lakeside property for sale is a rarity in the coveted area. The 4,500-square-meter site, about an acre, includes a three-level main villa, guest house and caretaker’s home.

The classic villa, measuring about 750 square meters or more than 8,000 square feet, is surrounded by parklike greenery and mature trees.

The ground floor entrance hall accesses a large open-plan living and dining area where local delicacies, such as fresh alpine cheeses and missoltini, a salted air-dried lake fish, could be sampled.

Ornate details include a baronial fireplace and decorative ceilings. French windows in the main living space take in Lake Como views and open to a lake-view terrace.

Two kitchens, a bathroom, two storage rooms and a laundry room are also on the ground level.

Four bedrooms with lake views, a study and four bathrooms are on the next floor up. The top level contains another four bedrooms and two bathrooms. An elevator accesses all three floors.

The guest house has another 160 square meters, or about 1,700 square feet, of living space. The caretaker’s house is slightly smaller at 140 square meters, about 1,500 square feet.

A heated swimming pool overlooks the lake while stone stairs lead to the water.

Marina Rizzotto of Palazzo Estate Srl, a Forbes Global Properties advertising partner, is the listing agent. The asking price is €17.5 million or slightly more than US $17 million.

Moltrasio is about a 45-minute drive from Milan and its airports.

  • The Video for Joel Corry’s Remix of “Hold Me Closer” Pointedly Only Includes Nods to Brit’s Pre-Conservatorship Looks

The Video for Joel Corry’s Remix of “Hold Me Closer” Pointedly Only Includes Nods to Brit’s Pre-Conservatorship Looks

    [ad_1]

As Britney Spears continues to show us that she has something of a fetish for repetition (as evidenced by her constantly twirling around to the same French song—Indila’s “S.O.S.”—in that elusive Hawaiian dance studio), she’s sanctioned, along with Elton John, another remix of “Hold Me Closer.” On the heels of the Purple Disco Machine Remix that provided, what else, a purple-ified version of the original “Hold Me Closer” video filmed in Mexico City, Elton and Brit have also provided fans with an entirely new visual for the Joel Corry remix of the single.

Alas, Brit still doesn’t opt to appear in this one either, skittish as she rightly is about the public eye and its according scrutiny. Though she does concede to “appearing” in a roundabout way by sanctioning the use of three of her most iconic looks from previous music videos and a tour. Tellingly, none of these looks are from the “era” in which she was forced to live her life in a conservatorship. So it is that we go “back to the start,” as it were, by opening on a dancer, Iara Raiane, wearing a riff on the “…Baby One More Time” schoolgirl uniform.

Directed by Rebekah Creative, the video was shot in London on a sound stage with an all-white backdrop. Because, with sartorial looks like these, the focus is drawn to said callbacks to the past anyway. One of which also includes a still-too-underrated look from Britney’s first tour, named after her hit album and single as well. It was on that tour that Brit’s “millennium” style was solidified with her white track pants (rounded out by adidas sneakers) featuring metallic pink “knee pads” that were complemented by a, in true Britney fashion, ultra-short metallic pink crop top. Dancer Gemma Nicholas is the one with the privilege to sport this ensemble, “updating” it with pink hair to color coordinate with the top and knee patches.

Then there’s Lia Hammond-Williams, who gets to wear the, at this point, all-too-played “Oops!…I Did It Again” catsuit, which has been shilled by Urban Outfitters for many a Halloween. And yes, there are three coordinating Elton “impersonators” as well, but they simply don’t stand out as much as the Britneys, who seek to remind viewers that, long ago, before she was shackled by her own family, she was just a carefree youth enjoying the frivolity that came with suddenly having a mound of disposable income.

As one of the few “relatable queen” celebrities (apart from her constantly taking a private jet, yet not being called out for it), she’s someone who would rather spend hundreds—nay, thousands—of dollars at Target on clothes and home goods than bother with haute couture (unless, of course, it’s for her custom-made Versace wedding dress). That’s why she resonated with so many tweens and teens at the height of her stardom; she was someone they could see themselves in (paving the way, ultimately, for the current queens of the teens, Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo). Before she was mutated into this “thing” to be dissected and pulled apart by tabloid media outlets, including the then-new phenomenon of internet gossip rags like Perez Hilton and TMZ.

Perhaps not able to forget what that feels like, Brit has no intention of “serving” herself up anymore, preferring that other people emulate her instead as a substitute. The least Elton-looking dancer (and not just because he’s a Black man), wearing head-to-toe white with angel wings, is also perhaps how Elton wants to see himself. With Britney still being far closer to the age she was when she first started than Mr. John. And, as Taylor Swift once reminded in Miss Americana, one tends to get stuck in the age they were when they initially became famous. It’s clear that Britney exhibits more than just flickers of that in her frequently-displayed state of arrested development. At the same time, who wouldn’t want to stay ensconced in a period before everything got so tainted by greed and betrayal? A.k.a. her own parents colluding to entrap her in what amounted to slavery.

As Joel Corry and his DJ booth show up in the center of it all, the jubilance of the song crescendos as the dancers do Britney proud with their choreo behind him. The two sets of three then go head-to-head in what comes across like one of those illustrious dance-offs that always seemed to be happening in 00s movies. And, according to tabloid myth, between Britney and Justin themselves at a club in Hollywood just after their breakup in 2002. The stuff of lore that managed to end up in the Lifetime movie, Britney Ever After.

As the white backdrop remains stagnant while the camera moves the dancers past us in a sideways motion, another icon of the 90s comes to mind: the “Macarena” video. But then, “Macarena” didn’t have all the bells and whistles of bothering with alternating colored lights as the dancers do their breakdown (complete with bubbles floating in the air to emphasize to us that Corry is very much an “Ibiza DJ”). And it’s one that Britney, who has always treated dancing like something close to religion, surely appreciates from her safe perch in Thousand Oaks. Maybe she’ll even show us her own rendition of it on Instagram someday.

  • Tom Brady, Elton John, Ed Sheeran, and Other A-Listers Attend Robert Kraft’s Surprise Wedding In NYC

Tom Brady, Elton John, Ed Sheeran, and Other A-Listers Attend Robert Kraft’s Surprise Wedding In NYC

    [ad_1]

The 81-year-old billionaire Robert Kraft, Chairman and CEO of The Kraft Group, whose holdings include the New England Patriots, threw a “Kickoff and a Touchdown” party for himself and Dr. Dana Blumberg, the 47-year-old ophthalmologist he has been dating since 2019. What most revelers at Friday night’s affair didn’t know until they showed up at Hall des Lumières, a Beaux-Arts style bank converted into exhibit hall and event space in Lower Manhattan, was that the invite was actually for a wedding.

Voice of the NFL Al Michaels introduced the couple as husband and wife to what PageSix estimated was 250 guests. It remains unclear where the legal side of the nuptials took place, but Kraft did step on a glass, as is customary in Jewish tradition.

Among the celebrants was Tom Brady, the longtime quarterback for Kraft’s New England Patriots. (He currently plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.) Brady’s wife, Gisele Bündchen, was not in attendance, as per PageSix. The couple have been having rather public marital issues, which are said to spring from his decision to come out of retirement and continue playing football. (The seven-time Super Bowl champion signed a $50 million contract for two more years with the NFL in 2020.)

Other football pros at the wedding bash included Ty Law, Richard Seymour, Troy Brown, Andre Tippett, Randy Moss, Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo and Drew Bledsoe, according to NBC Sports Boston

The big men of the gridiron got to rub shoulders with some big names in music and business, including Sir Elton John. Indeed, the night of the affair was somewhat dictated by EJ’s touring schedule. Some weeks ago Elton’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” rolled into the Kraft-owned Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. As the business magnate, eye doctor, and Rocketman were kibitzing backstage (apparently the singer admired Blumberg’s engagement ring), the couple said they were thinking of eloping soon. John said he would love to play the wedding “as a gift,” according to PageSix.

The six-time Grammy-winner, two-time Oscar-winner, and one-time Tony-winner came through, belting out “Philadelphia Freedom,” “Tiny Dancer,” and more.

Indeed, Ed Sheeran joined in a duet of “Candle in the Wind.” (At no level of success do musicians cease singing for their supper.)

Meek Mill also performed at the bash, and Grandmaster Flash was the DJ. Jon Bon Jovi and Kenny Chesney were among those spotted on the scene, as were a slew of other business big shots, like Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav, producer Brian Grazer, Shari Redstone, Ari Emanuel, NBA Commissioner David Silver, and Stephen A. Schwarzman, the CEO of The Blackstone Group who gave $100 million to the New York Public Library, so technically the main branch is now called The Steven A. Schwarzman Building, but if anyone ever calls it that they are immediately deported from the city.

Kraft’s four sons, including 58-year-old Kraft Group President Jonathan Kraft, were also in attendance, welcoming their new 47-year-old stepmom. In September 2020 charges against him were dropped in a massage parlor sex bust.
