    Lunar New Year is Tuesday, but Elk Grove is celebrating early with events this weekend.

    Project R.I.D.E in Elk Grove has been connecting riders and horses across the greater Sacramento area since 1979, offering equine therapy to people of all ages with special needs. “It’s hard to put in words unless you experience it,” Danny Ford, director of operations at Project R.I.D.E., said of the program’s impact. “I think it’s the happiest place on Earth. It’s better than Disneyland, in my opinion.”The nonprofit and therapeutic riding facility offers recreational riding to individuals with diagnosed physical, emotional and intellectual disabilities. The organization has a list of some of the diagnoses it accepts listed on its website.Five-year-old Rahi Parekh uses a wheelchair. KCRA 3 joined him for his lesson at Project R.I.D.E. late last month. He said he enjoys playing games while horseback riding and visiting with the barn cats, who also call the facility home.“I feel happy. Yeah. Happy. I feel happy,” he said.Ford noted horses have a special ability to connect with their riders.”They know completely how you’re feeling when you’re sitting in the saddle. They can actually sense and feel your heartbeat as well,” he said. “They will kind of match your senses, the way you’re feeling.”Ford began his work with the organization as a volunteer, but he first came through the barn doors as a dad.     A violent attack at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove sent a 14-year-old boy to the hospital after he was assaulted by a group of students, resulting in the arrest of four students. Hunter, who didn’t want to share his last name, said that it all started over a girl he used to date, who he said then dated one of the alleged attackers. “I just got out of class and then I just see that group of kids coming towards me,” Hunter said. He described how one of the students approached him while yelling and punched him. He said as he took off his backpack and tried to defend himself, three other students joined in the attack. “More kids started going in and I was in a headlock. And then, I got thrown to the floor and, like, this kid is like, three times my size, and he’s like sitting on me, throwing punches at me and then another kid joins in, kicks me and starts hitting me,” he said.Screenshots from a video sent to Hunter’s father by the Elk Grove Police Department show the fight ending with Hunter face down on the ground as a teacher intervened. “I literally got full-on stomped into concrete like face down,” Hunter said. “I’m just laying on the floor. I’m not even fighting back.”The four students involved, all 14 years old, were arrested on assault charges and taken to juvenile hall, according to the Elk Grove Police Department. Hunter was taken to the hospital following the attack, where he was treated for his injuries, including a concussion. “He told me he’s like, ‘Dad I could have been killed. I could be paralyzed. I couldn’t play football anymore,’” Sean, Hunter’s father, said. While Hunter is expected to recover, his father said he wished more had been done sooner. “It just blows my mind that where’s security? You know, there’s teachers there,” he said.The school principal sent a message to families on Thursday, stating that school staff and security responded immediately to de-escalate the situation and emphasized that safety is their top priority. “Today, an altercation occurred on campus involving several students. School staff, along with EGUSD Safety and Security, responded immediately to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of all students. Due to the nature of the incident, law enforcement was called as a precautionary measure.Thanks to the swift and coordinated actions of our staff, the situation was contained. School administration, law enforcement, and support staff are actively following up with the students involved and have contacted their parents/guardians directly,” the message reads.However, Hunter said he does not feel safe. “I got jumped twice in the same month,” he said.     Officers with the Elk Grove Police Department were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. to the Z Town – Asian Gastro Bar on Calvine Road just east of Elk Grove Florin Road.

    Upon arrival, officers found three people with gunshot wounds. A man died from his injuries at the scene, while the other two were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the police department said.

    Shortly after arriving, officers learned a fourth person injured in the shooting had driven themselves to a hospital, the police department said.

    The shooting occurred inside the bar. The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

    Amanda Tang, long time owner of Golden Donuts located next door says the shooting came as a surprise.

    “I’m very pleased in this place. We never have any problems,” Tang said.

    “My employee called me early this morning [and said] that she cannot get in to the parking lot. So there [was] something going on,” Tang added.

    The new openings are a part of the company’s efforts to support the active lifestyles of its membership and outdoor communities, according to a press release. The Northern California cities include Chico and Elk Grove. There will also be a SoCal opening in Carlsbad.

    “Our store employees are the heart of the co-op, and they welcome everyone to experience our product expertise, resources, and inspiration in support of an active lifestyle,” said Mary-Farrell Tarbox, REI vice president of Stores. “Cities that will have new stores represent communities that serve as a gateway to some of the country’s most incredible natural places and where our members currently live or destinations where they love to play outside.”

    Each new REI store will reportedly offer a wide assortment of apparel and gear for camping, hiking, cycling, running and fitness, climbing, and more. In addition, every store is expected to feature a full-service bike shop staffed by certified mechanics to tune and repair mountain, road, hybrid, or e-bikes.

    REI said the Chico location is expected to open in the spring of 2025. The Elk Grove location is scheduled to open in the summer of 2025.

    The Elk Grove Police Department said officers responded to a home on Crosscourt Way after a person reported they failed several times to contact their family and something seemed suspicious.

    They entered the home to find both a man and woman dead.

    Detectives are investigating both deaths as homicides, according to police.

    Thousands celebrate the Lunar New Year this Saturday in Elk Grove with a parade, traditional food, and music. This day marks the beginning of the new year based on the lunar calendar, and 2024 is the year of the dragon. Kelly Le, president of the NorCal Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce, says they have been organizing the Lunar New Festival for 15 years, but this is the first time it’s held in Elk Gove. “So many of us migrated here from our country in Vietnam and just to be able to celebrate and bring this culture and share it with everybody, it makes it so meaningful,” Le said. The free two-day event will be from February 10- 11 and has over 80 vendors participating. The goal of the event is to bring the community together through cultural heritage. “To show the kids what we are doing now so that they can take over. They are the next generation,” Le said. Residents can enjoy traditional Vietnamese cuisine, cultural exhibitions, and live entertainment.The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Elk Grove Regional Park. Admission is free but parking inside the park is $5 per vehicle.
