The Texans are back on the practice field today and they’re preparing for Sunday’s matchup with the Packers.

It’ll be the first time we’ve seen Denico Autry out at the Houston Methodist Training Center since training camp, and the defensive lineman’s return from injury is a welcome one.

Also, defensive lineman Kurt Hinish was activated from injured reserve and is back on the 53-man ros

Vamos Texans!

Updates: Caelen Carson added to the injury report

    DallasCowboys.com

Don’t miss any of the action with our daily updates: news, notes and more throughout the Cowboys’ regular season. Presented by Blockchain.com

    September 5 Caelen Carson

    #21 CB

Height: 6-0 Weight: 195 lbs College: Wake Forest

3:38 p.m. – The Cowboys saw a new name added to the injury report on Thursday and for a player they are counting on to have a huge role Sunday.

Hopefully for the team’s sake, a knee injury to rookie CB Caelen Carson won’t limit him against the Browns this weekend.

Carson was still listed as a full participant in practice. He did speak to reporters after practice on Thursday and spoke about his excitement to play in his first NFL game.

The Cowboys are already down at cornerback with the foot injury to DaRon Bland, that will keep him out at least the first four games – and injury that is allowing Carson to start on Sunday.

    ———————————-

    Ezekiel Elliott

    #15 RB

Height: 6-0 Weight: 228 lbs College: Ohio State

2:58 p.m. – Whether he was a rookie in 2016, a veteran in 2022, playing for the Patriots last year or now back with the Cowboys here in 2024, the mindset for Ezekiel Elliott never seems to change. And the reason is rather simple.

“I love football,” Zeke said on Thursday, just three days before his official return to the Cowboys. “I love this game. So ever time I get a chance to strap it up, I’m going to go give my best.”

There’s been a lot of discussion on his role with the team. He’s currently the starter but there could be more of a running back by-committee approach. Zeke said it doesn’t really matter to him, but he did share what does matter.

“Honestly, just to be back here wearing the star on my helmet. I’m just excited for the season.”

    ———————————-

The Browns announced their injury report on Thursday for Sunday’s game with the Cowboys:

Jedrick Wills, OT (knee) – Did Not Practice David Bell, WR (quad) – Limited Javion Conklin, OT (knee) – Limited Jordan Hicks, LB (calf) – Limited Maurice Hurst, DT (hamstring) – Limited Jerry Jeudy, WR (knee) – Full Quinton Jefferson, DT (Achilles) – Full Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB (Hand) – Full Dalvin Tomlinson, DT (Knee) – Limited Nathaniel Watson, LB (Quad) – Limited Alex Wright, DE (Elbow) – Full

    Trevon Diggs

    #7 CB

Height: 6-2 Weight: 195 lbs College: Alabama

11:49 a.m. – While there will be plenty of eyeballs on rookie Caelen Carson starting at cornerback in place of the injured DaRon Bland, we can’t forget about Trevon Diggs on the other side.

Diggs is expected to play his first game since Week 3 last year when he suffered a torn ACL. He’s been somewhat limited in practice but when asked on Thursday, head coach Mike McCarthy made it sound as if Diggs will be ready for a full return Sunday in Cleveland.

“He’s healthy. I see him healthy and ready to go,” McCarthy said in Thursday’s press conference. “As I stand here today, I see him slated as a full-time player. This is Thursday, this is our first full-padded practice. I think Trevon is right on schedule as far as how much he’ll play.”

    ———————————-

    September 4 John Stephens Jr.

    #81 TE

Height: 6-5 Weight: 221 lbs College: Louisiana

3:30 p.m. – After missing all of last year with a torn ACL, tight end John Stephens made the 53-man roster this season. But his NFL debut might be in question this week in Cleveland as he appeared on the team’s first injury report of the season with a hamstring injury.

Stephens was the only player on the roster that did not participate in Wednesday’s practice inside Ford Center at The Star.

The Cowboys have four tight ends on the roster along with Stephens in Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford.

    ———————————-

    CeeDee Lamb

    #88 WR

Height: 6-2 Weight: 200 lbs College: Oklahoma

1:22 p.m. – Currently, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb isn’t even on the 53-man roster for the Cowboys.

Make no mistake, he will be moved from the Commissioner’s Exempt List to the active roster in time to play Sunday in Cleveland. But just how much will he play after missing all of camp with a contract holdout.

“We’re building up to Sunday,” said head coach Mike McCarthy, who seems to be fully in regular-season mode when asked questions about game plans and player availability.

Earlier in the week, McCarthy said Lamb was on a “pitch count” in terms of his practice reps. And while he might be somewhat limited against the Browns, the idea is that he’ll be ready to go.

    ———————————-

    September 3 Tyler Guyton

    #60 T

Height: 6-7 Weight: 322 lbs College: Oklahoma

2:12 p.m. – Not since 2011 have the Cowboys started a pair of rookies on the offensive line. That year saw first-round pick Tyron Smith take over at right tackle although he eventually moved to the left side and had a career that will likely put him in Canton, Ohio one day.

But as Smith has signed with the Jets, it’s Tyler Guyton’s turn to take over as a rookie. The Cowboys’ 2024 first-round pick will start at left tackle against the Browns, who feature last year’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year in Myles Garrett.

Guyton got a handful of reps against the Raiders’ All-Pro Maxx Crosby in the Week 2 preseason game in Las Vegas, and of course got plenty of battles at training camp against the Cowboys’ Pro Bowl rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.

    ———————————-

    September 2 Jake Ferguson

    #87 TE

Height: 6-5 Weight: 244 lbs College: Wisconsin

2:21 p.m. – There wouldn’t be many things the Cowboys would want to carry over from the final playoff loss to the Packers last year to this season.

The only exception might be the play of tight end Jake Ferguson, who had three TD catches in that loss to Green Bay. Most of that success came in garbage time when the game was already decided. But it’s an example of what Ferguson could bring to the table in Year 3.

He was asked about the confidence Dak has in him.

“You’d have to ask him, but I think the chemistry is there,” Ferguson said. “Doing all this work in the offseason. Him taking us to Oregon in the offseason. I think that was huge. Not a lot of QBs do that. I’m blessed to have a quarterback to be able to do that – not only make it about football, but make it about the guys and learn about each other off the field as well. I think when you do that I think you take that next step to becoming that really good team that’s closer than all the other ones.”

    ———————————-

    Terence Steele

    #78 T

Height: 6-6 Weight: 310 lbs College: Texas Tech

1:51 p.m. – The focus on the O-line come Sunday will undoubtedly be on the two rookie draft picks, starting at center and left tackle. And if no that, then maybe on the two guards that are coming off All-Pro seasons.

But not to be overlooked is right tackle Terence Steele, who finds himself as one of the top veterans of the group.

“I’m in Year 5 now. I can’t believe that but I have a ton of reps under my belt and I’m just excited,” Steele said. “I’m probably more excited than I am nervous. I’m excited to be there with my team and put on a show. This O-line is going to be fun to watch.”

Part of the line is the aforementioned rookies – in center Cooper Beebe and left tackle Tyler Guyton.

“Super super impressed with both of them,” Steele said. “(They) came in since Day 1 willing to work, put in extra time, asking the vets all the questions they need to ask. And they’re gifted physically and mentally.

    ———————————-

    Dalvin Cook

    #20 RB

Height: 5-10 Weight: 210 lbs College: Florida State

11:43 a.m. – Dalvin Cook was on the field with his teammates in preparation for the Week 1 game in Cleveland.

Sporting the No. 20, Cook is technically on the practice squad, along with Malik Davis. The Cowboys’ roster of backs includes Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn, along with fullback Hunter Luepke.

NFL rules allow teams to elevate two players per week to the Game-Day roster. After the game, the player reverts back to the practice squad. But he can only be elevated three times during the regular season.

Whether or not Cook plays this week is uncertain. In his career, mostly with the Vikings, he had nine career 100-yard games. Two of them have occurred in Week 1.

    ———————————-

    Juanyeh Thomas

    #30 S

Height: 6-3 Weight: 217 lbs College: Georgia Tech

11:08 a.m. – The Dallas Cowboys are taking the field for the first practice of the week on Monday morning, and the expectation is that all active players will be available in at least a limited fashion.

That calls the return from injury for safety Juanyeh Thomas (hamstring), safety Israel Mukuamu, wide receiver Brandin Cooks (knee) and linebacker Damone Clark (knee) among others.

    ———————————-

    August 31 Caelen Carson

    #21 CB

Height: 6-0 Weight: 195 lbs College: Wake Forest

9:45 a.m. – When Caelen Carson takes the field for what will be his first ever regular season game for the Dallas Cowboys, he’ll do so under a tremendous amount of pressure to replace an injured DaRon Bland.

That pressure is now ratcheted up by his jersey selection, because the rookie fifth-round pick will wear No. 21 to begin his NFL career, switching from No. 41.

    ———————————-

“He’s shown that the moment isn’t too big for him,” said head coach Mike McCarthy. “He’s got great instincts and ball skills. … He’s done a really good job.”

The number was made legendary by none other that Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, having also been donned by Ezekiel Ellliott (in his first stint) and, in 2023, former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore.

When Elliott returned this offseason, he opted for No. 15, his college number at Ohio State and last season with the Patriots, leaving 21 open.

    ———————————-

    August 30 Chuma Edoga

    #71 G

Height: 6-3 Weight: 308 lbs College: USC

12:01 p.m. – The Cowboys placed veteran lineman Chuma Edoga on injured reserve this week.

Edoga suffered a toe injury in the Aug. 11 game against the Rams. He started that game at left tackle and had been working mostly with the first-team offense before his injury.

It was always expected that rookie Tyler Guyton would eventually take over but Edoga provides value as a swing tackle who could also play guard.

Since the Cowboys kept him on the 53-man roster on Tuesday, Edoga can return after four weeks. However, the nature of his injury will likely keep him out until the bye week (Oct. 14-20).

With Edoga out, the Cowboys will likely use either Asim Richards or Matt Waletzko as the backup tackle for the Sept. 8 opener in Cleveland, behind starters Terence Steele and Guyton.

    ———————————-

    August 29 Caelen Carson

    #21 CB

Height: 6-0 Weight: 195 lbs College: Wake Forest

12:30 p.m. – Buckle up folks, because the Dallas Cowboys will be deploying their Seat Belt a lot sooner than originally expected.

Caelen Carson, affectionately known as “Seat Beal Carson”, will be thrust into the limelight when the rookie takes over the starting role over the next several weeks to begin the 2024 season, due to a foot injury suffered by NFL pick-six king DaRon Bland.

The rookie fifth-round pick has had an exceptional training camp, and head coach Mike McCarthy believes he’s ready for all that awaits him, effective Sept. 8 against the Browns in Cleveland.

“I’ll say this: it’s consistency. and not only at corner, but look at his special teams reps, too,” said McCarthy. “Every time he’s been given an opportunity, he’s shown that the moment isn’t too big for him. He’s got great instincts and ball skills. … He’s done a really good job.”

    ———————————-

11:13 a.m. – With three new additions to the practice squad, here is the full list of 17 players, including Denzel Daxon, who is part of the NFL’s International Pathway Program, which gives the team a roster exemption for the practice squad.

Josh Ball, T Josh Butler, CB Dalvin Cook, RB Jalen Cropper, WR Malik Davis, RB Denzel Daxon, DT (IPP) Princeton Fant, TE Kemon Hall, CB Kelvin Harmon, WR Darrius Harris, LB Phil Hoskins, DT Emany Johnson, S Carl Lawson, DE Brock Mogensen, LB Amani Oruwariye, CB Dakoda Shepley, OL Nick Vigil, LB

    ———————————-

    Amani Oruwariye

    #27 CB

Height: 6-2 Weight: 205 lbs College: Penn State

9:21 a.m. – The Cowboys are adding more depth to the cornerback position with the expected signing of veteran Amani Oruwariye.

A fifth-round pick of the Lions in 2019, Oruwariye has started 36 games with nine career interceptions, including six in the 2021 season.

He spent last year in Jacksonville but played just one game due to injury.

The Cowboys recently put DaRon Bland on IR for at least four games with a stress fracture in his foot. Trevon Diggs is coming off ACL injury last year. The Cowboys have Jourdan Lewis, Caelen Carson, Andrew Booth and Israel Mukuamu at the position on the 53-man roster.

    ———————————-

    Dalvin Cook

    #20 RB

Height: 5-10 Weight: 210 lbs College: Florida State

The Cowboys have officially signed running back Dalvin Cook to the practice squad, wearing the No. 20.

The four-time Pro Bowler is expected to work his way into playing shape to be added to the 53-man roster at some point.

Cook has ties to Mike Zimmer, his college with the Vikings. He played his first six years in Minnesota (2017-22) before spending time last season with the Jets and Ravens.

Cook has 6,207 career rushing yards and 47 touchdowns.

    ———————————-

    Phil Hoskins

    #96 DT

Height: 6-5 Weight: 280 lbs College: Kentucky

The Cowboys have added another 300-pound defensive tackle to the room. This time, it’s Phil Hoskins (6-5, 315), who spent the last three years with the Panthers and Cardinals.

Hoskins has just 15 career games played with one start.

He’ll join the practice squad for now, but will be alongside newly-signed DT’s Linval Joseph and Jordan Phillips.

5 Things to Know About Vikings New LB Blake Cashman

    Lindsey Young

EAGAN, Minn. – A familiar face is back in Minnesota.

The Vikings last week signed linebacker Blake Cashman, a native of Eden Prairie who shined at the University of Minnesota before being drafted 157th overall by the Jets in 2019.

Cashman spent his first three NFL seasons in New York, then was acquired by the Texans via trade in March 2022.

Cashman had a breakout season for Houston in 2023, starting 13 of 14 games played and leading the team in tackles with 106. He recorded 2.0 sacks, nine tackles for loss, five passes defensed and a fumble recovery. He also nabbed his first career interception when he picked off Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence in Week 3.

Here are five things to know about the Vikings new linebacker:

    Hometown kid

Cashman attended Eden Prairie High School, where he was coached by Head Coach Mike Grant – son of Hall of Fame Vikings Head Coach Bud Grant.

As a senior, Cashman played cornerback and linebacker, helping lead the Eagles to a 13-0 record and Eden Prairie’s fourth straight state title. He earned First-Team All-State honors by The Associated Press and was named to the 2014 KARE 11 All-Metro Defensive Team.

Cashman is the second Minnesota native on the Vikings current roster, joining fullback C.J. Ham (Duluth).

    Surprised with a scholarship

In 2017, Gophers Head Coach P.J. Fleck hosted an “Elite Egg Extravaganza.” Pairs of teammates had their wrists taped together and were set loose to work together for 30 minutes, searching the facility for 1,000 plastic Easter eggs.

At the conclusion of the event, each player was given an egg to open … with everyone but Cashman being in on a special surprise. When the walk-on linebacker opened his egg, he found a message saying he’d earned a scholarship.

“This isn’t something that’s going to keep me from working hard,” Cashman told the team after the announcement and celebration. “I’m gonna keep doin’ what I’m doin’.”

    Hosts annual youth camp

For the past three summers, Cashman has joined former Gophers teammates Carter Coughlin (Giants) and Ryan Connelly (who was with the Vikings from 2020-22) in hosting a youth football camp.

The “Cashman Connell Coughlin” camp teaches youngsters about football fundamentals, as well as the importance of teamwork, communication and focus.

    Supporter of TB1Fund

Cashman has been a consistent supporter of the TB1Fund and Braxton “Brax” Battaglia, a 13-year-old leukemia warrior and die-hard Golden Gophers fan.

Brax has worked alongside the Gophers in fundraising for the TB1Fund and has become an inspiration to many since first being diagnosed at age 9 and relapsing three years later.

In 2022, Cashman represented Brax and the foundation during the Texans “My Cause My Cleats” game.

    Going Wild

Cashman wasted no time getting back to the Xcel Energy Center to watch the Minnesota Wild in action.

After visiting Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center last week to sign his contract and speak with media members, Cashman attended the Wild’s 2-0 defeat of the Ducks.

  • Aaron Jones: ‘Chapter 2’ of NFL Career is ‘Going to be Beautiful’

Aaron Jones: ‘Chapter 2’ of NFL Career is ‘Going to be Beautiful’

    Lindsey Young

EAGAN, Minn. – In an Instagram Story filmed in a parking garage and posted late Wednesday night, Aaron Jones asked his young son, “Where are we, Junior?”

The 3-year-old, riding atop a wheeled suitcase, looked up at Jones and giggled.

“Where are we?” Jones asked again.

    “Vikings!” Aaron, Jr., shouted happily.

The pint-sized look-alike isn’t the only one excited about his dad’s new job.

Jones arrived at Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center Thursday to sign a contract with the Vikings, just a few days after being released by the Packers. He lit up when presented with a purple sombrero – which he began wearing in 2019 to honor his hometown of El Paso, Texas – just before inking his name to paper.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Jones told media members later that day. “I’d like to thank K.O. (Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell) and [General Manager] Kwesi [Adofo-Mensah] for believing in me and taking a chance on me.

“I’d also like to thank the Green Bay Packers for drafting me seven years ago and giving me the opportunity to establish myself in the NFL and build myself off the field, as well,” he added.

If Jones finds it bizarre to now be on the Border Battle’s other side, he doesn’t show it.

“You know, it’s football,” he said. “I played for many different teams growing up – middle school, high school – you know, you change teams, you change teammates, and that’s part of the game. And like I said, I’m blessed to be here. I’m excited for what’s to come and to get to work with these guys.”

A 2017 fifth-round pick, Jones has three 1,000-yard rushing seasons to his resume and last season recorded 142 carries for 656 yards and two touchdowns over 11 starts. He also added 30 catches and 233 yards and a touchdown through the air. In the Packers Divisional Round loss to San Francisco, Jones became the first player in franchise history to record five consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

O’Connell told media members he’s “always been a huge Aaron Jones fan.” Now, the 29-year-old is on his offense.

O’Connell noted Jones’ ability to run the football as well as impact the pass game. And off the field? He said Jones’ “poise and demeanor and leadership” shined through from the opposing sideline.

“And all of that’s been confirmed in a short amount of time … really, since we’ve been able to have him in the building today and getting around him,” O’Connell said. “I think he enhances our room more than just the addition of another running back. It’s how he puts his skill set with Ty [Chandler] and our other runners in the room and, more importantly, what he may unlock from things he’s done in this league, things that fit for our offense.

“You know, he’s a complete back from a standpoint of a guy who’s played a lot of football. He is 29 years old, but he’s also been part of an offense where he hasn’t had to carry the full burden, the full load,” O’Connell added. “And the impact on third down as a pass protector, a receiver out of the backfield. Five-yards-per-carry career average. I mean, this is a guy that’s had the type of impact we were looking for to add to our room, and I’m really, really excited to start getting to work with Aaron.”

Jones knows he isn’t a spring chicken by NFL standards, but he assured he hasn’t lost a step.

“I mean, I think you got to see how I finished the season last year,” he said, grinning.

Jones was asked if being released by the Packers, who signed a 26-year-old Josh Jacobs, sparks extra motivation.

He doesn’t need anything extra, he emphasized.

“Just because they didn’t re-sign me is not fuel to the fire. My fire has already been lit, and it’s gonna stay lit,” Jones said. “I’m on a mission to be the best running back in the NFL. And I’m glad I get to prove that here, in Minnesota with a great organization. They’ve opened their doors to us, loving and kind, and we’ve had a great time here so far, so I’m ready to enjoy them.”

Jones does not yet have a deep relationship with a new teammate, but after facing Minnesota 11 times across seven seasons, he’s plenty familiar with several players and mentioned a mutual respect that’s been quickly communicated after games.

“Football is like a fraternity. So we’ve all been through the same thing; we all put in that work, so when you see somebody who’s been there, doing the same thing that you do … it’s mutual love,” he said. “I always talked to them after the game.”

He recalled postgame chats last season with rookie linebacker Ivan Pace, Jr., and safety Harrison Smith – who restructured his contract Wednesday to remain with the Vikings for a 13th season.

“They’ve given us trouble for years, so I’m glad to not get that trouble,” Jones quipped of Minnesota’s defense. “I’m excited to play with [Smith]. You know, I had to block him my rookie year. I remember him putting me on the turf, on my backside. I went to Coach, ‘Can we change the protection?’

“But I’m happy to be here with him. Learn from him. Pick his brain, see how he’s been able to play for so long and stay healthy. And just see how he leads,” Jones added.

There’s been give and take in the series. The Packers went 6-5 in Border Battles with Jones in the lineup, including 5-0 when he rushed for at least 75 yards.

Leadership is important to Jones, whose late father provided a strong example. Though Alvin Jones, Sr., sadly passed away in April 2021 due to COVID-19, his influence and legacy live on through his wife and children.

Jones, who wears a chain that holds a bit of his father’s ashes, said it meant “everything” to have his family in Minnesota to help him kick off this next leg of his NFL career.

“They’re my backbone. My rock. So you’ll probably see a lot of them,” he said.

“It’s just a blessing to be here,” Jones added with a smile. “Chapter 1’s over. This is the start of Chapter 2, and Chapter 2 is going to be beautiful.”
