    Late Thursday evening, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed by El Monte police after officers responded to a domestic violence call at a Route 66 gas station near Garvey and Durfee avenues. According to FoxLA, the shooting occurred around 10:30 pm. The man has yet to be identified.

    Details around the matter confirmed that the man was declared dead on the scene, despite the life-saving efforts by the fire department. A woman was also taken away in an ambulance with non-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition. One officer was taken in for non-threatening injuries as well and has now been released.

    A dark-colored sedan was seen on NBC4’s chopper, boxed in by police cars at the scene, with the passenger side door ripped off.

     Residents nearby shared that they were shaken by a sudden burst of gunshots late at night. “I heard like six or seven gunshot… and yeah, we looked on the news and saw it this close, so we had to come running over here,” said one resident, according to ABC7. 

    Witnesses also reported that the suspect’s vehicle may have possibly rammed into a patrol unit before gunshots were unleashed. Certain details remain unknown regarding what exactly led up to the gunfire and the details surrounding the original call. 

    The shooting sparked a long investigation, closing Garvey Avenue from Durfee to Valley. 

    The California Department of Justice is leading the investigation, and no further information is currently available.

    A woman who was allegedly kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend in El Monte was released after a 21-mile freeway pursuit through Los Angeles and Orange counties that at one point slowed to a crawl.

    According to the El Monte Police Department, the man showed up at the woman’s place of work in the 10300 block of Lower Azusa Road just before 6 p.m. Saturday. The two argued before the man allegedly forced the woman into her car, police said, and drove off without allowing her to exit. The woman called a friend, who tracked the car via the Find My iPhone app and contacted law enforcement.

    A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter located the car on the 5 Freeway in the area of Commerce and notified California Highway Patrol.

    CHP attempted a traffic stop, but the man continued to drive, leading law enforcement on a chase for more than 20 miles.

    “Spike strips were utilized to puncture the vehicle’s tires which caused it to become inoperable and yield” near the 405 Freeway and Westminster Avenue, police said in a statement.

    But first, multiple law enforcement vehicles slowly tailed the vehicle as it inched onward in a slow-speed pursuit, KCAL News footage showed, until the car finally came to a stop.

    The suspect and a woman in the passenger’s seat got out of the car, video showed. The man walked over to the woman and hugged her while she spoke into her phone. He then slowly walked backward toward law enforcement with raised arms and surrendered. The woman was not injured, police said.

    The suspect is at a processing facility on $100,000 bail, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

    El Monte police said that charges of kidnapping and felony evading would be submitted to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police Department at (626) 580-2100.

    Report: El Monte officers shot in ambush were not verbally warned that suspect had gun, was on PCP

    A California police dispatcher failed to tell two officers before they were fatally shot by a convicted gang member that the suspect reportedly had a gun and was under the influence of PCP and methamphetamine, according to a 911 recording.

    El Monte Police Department Officer Joseph Santana, 31, and Cpl. Michael Paredes, 42, were ambushed and killed on June 14, 2022, while responding to a report of a stabbing at a motel near Los Angeles. Another officer was wounded. The gunman, Justin Flores, then shot and killed himself.

    The 911 call was made by Maria Zepeda, who reported that her daughter had been stabbed by Flores, her 35-year-old husband, at the Siesta Inn, the Southern California News Group reported Saturday.

    During the 7-minute call, Zepeda repeatedly told the dispatcher that Flores had a recent history of violence against her daughter, was under the influence of PCP and meth and was armed and dangerous.

    “He’s on PCP. He has a gun!” Zepeda said during the call.

    That information, however, was not communicated over the radio by the dispatcher who deployed the three officers to the motel according to the news group.

    Investigators said Flores ambushed the officers when they confronted him.

    Detective Amber Montenegro, a lead investigator for the case, confirmed the dispatcher did not inform officers over the radio that Flores possibly had a gun and was on drugs. But the information was typed into the computer-aided dispatch system and visible to the responding officers on the computer terminals in their patrol vehicles, Montenegro said.

    The city of El Monte announced Corporal Michael Paredes and Officer Joseph Santana were killed in the line of duty.

    “They definitely had all the information in their boxes before they arrived, so they were able to look at the call and review it,” Montenegro said during a Dec. 2023 briefing with Santana’s family.

    Montenegro said the dispatcher shouldn’t be blamed. “You can’t put any of this all on one person,” she said.

    Santana’s sister, Jessica Santana, said she believes the dispatcher should have relayed the information over the radio.

    “It’s just I feel if they would have voiced it, it would have been different,” Santana said. “That’s just what gets me, because my brother would still be here.”

    Flores was on probation for a gun charge at the time of the shooting, which occurred a day after his probation officer requested that he return to court later in the month, according to court records.

    El Monte Police Chief Jake Fisher said he stands by the actions of his dispatchers and officers. Fisher told the news group his department is actively working with the Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney’s Office in completing the final steps in the investigation.

    “We fully anticipate this finding to hold and that our DA will officially clear all involved officers and close the investigation,” Fisher said.

    The investigation entered its 13th hour around 6 a.m. Wednesday, as police try to figure out what led to the shooting that killed two El Monte officers. Toni Guinyard reports for Today in LA on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.
