On Thursday night, one of King Charles III’s most significant legacies was being celebrated at Casa Cipriani in downtown Manhattan, even though the guest of honor was across the pond. In the months after last year’s coronation, the foundation the king started in 1976 changed its name to the King’s Trust, and for the second year in a row, hosts Lionel Richie and Edward Enninful assembled a bi-continental crowd to celebrate its recent expansion into the US.
Richie told Vanity Fair he was sad the king couldn’t make it, but they spoke earlier this week. “How happy I am that I can say he is doing fantastic again,” said Richie, who arrived with his partner, Lisa Parigi. “I understand he needs to sit still, you know what I’m saying? The most important part is he is doing well, he’s back to his duties. Therefore I wouldn’t want the first thing for him to do is to come over to make this event. Let’s not prove anything here! But we are here to represent. We’re going to do a great job of that.”
Even without the real deal, there was a bit of representation in the form of Dominic West,The Crown’s ’90s era Charles. He came as a guest of Charlotte Tilbury, one of the night’s sponsors, and spotted a distinct glow from what he said was her “facial stuff.” Wearing a white shirt with a ruffled collar, the actor said that while he wasn’t much of a fashion plate, his cufflinks did have a special provenance. “They’re from The Crown,” he said. He added that he might have enjoyed his costumes, but his real admiration for the king came from his work with the King’s Trust.
“I think it’s one of the best charities in the world. It’s amazing what it does. I think that’s why I admire him the most, because of this charity. It’s incredible,” West said. “I’ve met lots of the kids that it has helped, and it’s had such a global reach. So I support it whenever I can.”
In conversation with reporters, Enninful said he was hoping the best for the king and Kate Middleton amid their recent health struggles. “You’ve seen the king out and about, and I’m so excited,” he said. “I just wish him the best, and the same for the Princess of Wales. I look forward to seeing them out and about, doing the great work.”

It was an era-defining moment when departing Vogue UK editor Edward Enninful gathered together 40 of the most famous faces to have graced the cover of his magazine for a farewell group shot.
Famous faces on the March 2024 issue include veterans Oprah Winfrey and Jane Fonda, supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista, actresses Jodie Comer, Anya Taylor-Joy and tennis star Serena Williams.
One star noticeable by her absence was Nicole Kidman, who – it transpires – was unable to attend because the end of the writers’ strike meant she had to return to filming duty on her next project, Birthday Girl.
Questions were also raised over the absence of Meghan Markle, who joined forces with Enninful back in September 2019 to guest-edit an issue of the magazine. The reason given was that only those stars who have previously been on the cover were included.
One insider told the Daily Mail the logistics involved in bringing together such a celebrated flock were similar to “almost as much planning as D-Day.” Miley Cyrus was one famous face who went the extra mile to be involved, flying 5,000 miles by private jet to New York, to have her photograph taken for 15 minutes.
Enninful was appointed editor-in-chief of British Vogue in 2017 but stepped down after a short tenure in 2023. He is quoted in the Daily Mail reflecting: “I never expected all 40 to turn up.”
The horses are readied, the Abbey doors are open, and the streets are lined with red, white and blue. Wherever you land, monarchist or not, there’s no denying that today is a moment in history.
Unsurprisingly, we’ve never found the need to add a ‘What to Wear to a Coronation’ into our outfit guides, but if we had, these guest looks would certainly feature. As a day that will be immortalised through pictures forever, considering what to wear is just as monumental as attending itself. For attendees, colour was served up abound. This year’s covers saw everything from fashion fantasies and illustrative political statements to career revivals and retirement announcements; from Lizzo in Bad Binch TongTong and Beyoncé in Harris Reed atop a horse to Nicole Kidman in the now-infamous Miu Miu micro set. There were less gray gradient backdrops from Vogue and a lot more color through styling, set design and makeup (not to mention casting), perhaps signifying a shift in direction of fashion’s perspective. It’s fair to say 2022 brought the best of the best from our favorite magazines.
