Brand New Children’s Book Series to Promote Educational Value and Implement Joy in Young Readers

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 18, 2018

Looking for a book to read to your child or students for Earth Day? “Paddy’s Forest Trek” written by Patti Gill is an engaging and informative narrative nonfiction story about a young porcupine and his friend who spend a fun-filled day on a forest adventure, learning fascinating information about trees. The characters develop a genuine friendship as they pursue their quest.

This book is targeted for ages 5-8 or children in pre-kindergarten to second grade. This book creatively introduces scientific concepts about plants and plant growth. The question and answer format along with specific kid-friendly vocabulary is seamless to allow essential information to be delivered in a concise manner to enhance comprehension.

Author Patti Gill strategically formulated this book around the current academic status among elementary schools in both urban and suburban districts. She said, “Due to testing pressures, schools rarely have time to go in-depth at the elementary level with necessary science and history content critical for helping students to become proficient readers. I wanted to provide parents and teachers with a creative solution on how to build background core knowledge, while exposing children to domain-specific language.”

“Paddy’s Forest Trek” is the first book in the new upcoming narrative nonfictional series where Paddy will take adventures around the globe and throughout time learning about different informational topics. The new book, released on Aug. 31, 2017, can be purchased on Amazon, Litfire.com and online at Barnes & Noble.

For more information about the book as well as the upcoming series, check out Patti Gill’s website at www.pattigill.com.

Westside Christian Academy Announces the Launch of the SME Westside High School Membership Program

    [ad_1]

Henry Wells, III, Campus Principal and Head of Westside Christian Academy recently announced the formation of the Westside SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) Membership Program, to further educate students on the value of manufacturing and the career possibilities available to them.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn the many opportunities for a career in manufacturing including skilled trades, engineering, designing and programming,” said Wells.

There are currently more than 600,000 jobs available in manufacturing in the US, with the expectation that number could grow to 2 million by 2025 because of an aging workforce and new technologies creating more jobs.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn the many opportunities for a career in manufacturing including skilled trades, engineering, designing and programming.”

Henry Wells, III, Principal and Head of Westside Christian Academy

“Our students will envision a more positive future when they learn about the manufacturing resurgence in Detroit and realize that they can be a part of it and begin to work toward that goal,” said Wells.

The SME high school student membership program provides a wealth of knowledge for the student members including access to programs and activities that provide them with both hands-on and virtual access to resources and information related to manufacturing including a mentorship program and scholarships.

“Our students are discovering that manufacturing is undergoing a renaissance in their own community with high paying manufacturing jobs and successful careers opening up to them,” said Wells.  “They need to learn what opportunities are out there for them, and becoming involved in the SME High School Membership Program will give them access to that information.”

    About SME

SME is a nonprofit organization has served practitioners, companies, educators, government and communities across the manufacturing spectrum for more than 80 years.  Through its strategic areas of events, media, membership, training and development and the SME Education Foundation, SME is uniquely dedicated to the advancement of manufacturing by addressing both knowledge and skills needed for the industry.

New Grant Opportunity From Agentic Learning Will Help Schools Successfully Implement Student-Centered Learning

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 2, 2018

Empowering students by fostering student agency has been shown to improve outcomes, leading to gains in student engagement and achievement. But many school systems struggle to implement this approach effectively.

To remedy this problem, Agentic Learning today launched a competitive grant opportunity for school districts to work with the organization on an innovative and comprehensive one-year program to engage all learners and improve academic outcomes. Agentic Learning is conducting a nationwide search for school districts that believe student agency should be a primary goal in education and will award grants to two districts upon completion of a rigorous review process.

We have uncovered the key to raising student achievement and preparing students for the dynamic and ever-changing world they are facing.

    Dr. Michael Gielniak, CEO

“We believe we have uncovered the key to raising student achievement and preparing students for the dynamic and ever-changing world they are facing — and this key is student agency. When student-centered learning is implemented authentically, student agency occurs. Unfortunately, this is not the experience in many schools today. As a result, students are disengaged — and learning is stagnant,” said Dr. Michael Gielniak, CEO of Agentic Learning. “We are looking to partner with two school districts who believe in the importance of student agency and who are willing to do this challenging but groundbreaking work.”

“In most school districts, new innovations are implemented top-down, and teachers are treated as cogs in a machine, not given the agency they need to authentically put the deep substance of new pedagogies in place,” said Marie Bjerede, President of Agentic Learning. “Instead, we help districts give teachers ownership over the path and pace they use to lead student agency and turbo-charge learning in their classrooms.”

In Agentic Learning’s student agency program, the goal is to produce teachers who say, “I can’t believe I get paid for this,” and students who say, “I can’t believe I get credit for this,” as they find themselves achieving their goals with hard work that feels like fun. Agentic Learning’s tools and resources help districts foster these outcomes by offering an environment that supports student agency, intrinsic motivation, and flow.

Beginning today, school districts can apply for the grant, which provides the one-year Agentic Learning program and support free of charge. The application period closes on March 1, 2018.

Agentic Learning is a mission-driven company formed in 2017 to address the challenges districts face in implementing initiatives in a way that actually drives improved student outcomes. Too often initiatives with great promise have no significant effect once they make it to the classroom, or if they work in one classroom they don’t scale. Agentic Learning has developed a protocol that addresses the failure of promising initiatives to scale throughout a district that is based in fostering student agency as a component of these initiatives and empowering teachers to take ownership of the path and pace of implementation.  Through these mechanisms, the frequent systemic failure of initiatives like Project Based Learning, Inquiry, Design Thinking, and others to significantly impact student outcomes is addressed.

Westside Christian Academy Welcomes Mathnasium Master Kimberly M. Smith to the Master Class Series

    [ad_1]

Kimberly Smith, owner and director of two Mathnasium Learning Centers, one in Canton and one in West Bloomfield, addressed the Westside Christian Academy high school students as part of the Westside Master Class Series which focuses on the beneficial aspects of an education in STEM.

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 23, 2018

Ms. Smith told the class to ask themselves if they think they are going to be successful and to think about what they need to do to make sure they are successful. “You can make that decision,” she said, “your environment doesn’t make that decision for you.”

The Westside Master Class Series focuses on careers in STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math — and is held at the school on the last Thursday of every month.

Ms. Smith gave our students valuable insight into why they need the STEM skills to compete in the real world and showed them a list of career opportunities that were possible with those skills.

Henry Wells III, Campus principal and head of Westside Christian Academy

“Ms. Smith gave our students valuable insight into why they need the STEM skills to compete in the real world and showed them a list of career opportunities that were possible with those skills,” said Henry Wells III, campus principal and head of the school.

“The top paying jobs in America all have math in common,” Smith told the students. “If you don’t know what you want to do yet, if you are strong in math, doors can be opened for you.”

Ms. Smith is a strong and versatile senior manager with leadership experience in both manufacturing and education. Her talents as a detail-oriented multitasker serve to explain her present success as the managing director of all operational aspects at her two Mathnasium Learning Centers.

“There are people in the world,” she told the students, “who are successful and you have access to those people through the Master Class Series. You can speak to those people and take that information and reflect on it and how it translates to your life. What are you doing now, and what are you doing to change yourself?  Reflect on that then begin to take action.”

“Westside is committed to educating strong servant leaders who influence their relationships, communities and the world for the glory of God,” said Mr. Wells III.  “Ms. Smith was a great example of a strong leader who is influencing her students.”

  • Opinion: Are Kids Being Set Up for Medical Abuse?

Opinion: Are Kids Being Set Up for Medical Abuse?

    [ad_1]

The recent news stories about Dr. Larry Nassar allegedly molesting as many as 125 young girls demonstrate that that we can’t always trust our clinicians. Yet, we live in a society where we too often hear, “No medical professionals wake up in the morning wanting to harm their patients.”

Child abuse by medical professionals is not common, thank goodness, but it does happen. That’s just one reason why Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy (CPSEA) goes into high schools and encourages young people to open up about their experiences and talk with each other about their patient/clinician relationships.

“This should be a relationship of trust where a young person can be treated with respect and dignity. . .”

Ilene Corina, President, PULSE Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy

By high school age, children should be prepared to visit their doctor alone. They need to share information that they may not want their parents or another adult to hear. This should be a relationship of trust where a young person can be treated with respect and dignity, can ask hard questions and disclose the most difficult concerns:  depression, sex, drugs etc.

“I had an early encounter with two sisters who called their doctor ‘creepy’ during a teen discussion about medical care and preparing to see their doctor,” explains Ilene Corina, a patient safety advocate and educator for Pulse CPSEA. “This experience disclosed problems in the relationship so I started teaching patient safety to young people, with the support and guidance of qualified medical professionals.”

Other topics Pulse CPSEA addresses with classes as early as middle school are preparing for the doctor’s visit with questions; appropriately and fully explaining symptoms for the best diagnosis; and medication safety. The presentations are fun and interactive and leave classes recognizing the importance of becoming “Informed and Involved” patients.

She Geeks Out Launches New Corporate Program on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

    [ad_1]

She Geeks Out (“SGO”) announced that applications are open for their new corporate program, The Vault. In this unique program designed specifically for executives, senior leaders, startup founders, venture capitalists and managers, attendees will learn about the historical context of oppression including racism and sexism, current terminology and thinking, and how to apply this knowledge to real-world workplace scenarios. In what is arguably a particularly challenging time for corporate leaders grappling with a heightened awareness of the importance of creating an inclusive and welcoming work environment, this program will provide a confidential space to discuss difficult issues with their peers and be facilitated by experts in workplace diversity and inclusion. The overarching goal is to translate this learning into action by helping attendees move the needle forward toward equity for all within their organization. Upon completion, participants will be more informed, be able to make a strong business case for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and have a better understanding of their own identities and their impact on the workplace.

The Vault will take place over six mornings beginning early Spring 2018. The public Spring program is open to individuals from various organizations; the program is also available to companies’ internal teams upon request. Each of the six sessions will focus on a different topic: Identity, Terminology, Power and Privilege, Skill Building, Multicultural Organizational Development, and Action Planning. SGO requests that interested parties apply on the SGO website as soon as possible to ensure availability.

I found The Vault excellent for gaining comfort in the language of diversity, equity, and inclusion. I was able to work with the facilitators and the rest of our group to assess current challenges, create an action plan and immediately begin working toward a more inclusive work environment. I highly recommend this training to anyone passionate about creating healthy, diverse, and inclusive teams.

CSBA Calls on Legislature to Fund Public Schools at the Average of the Top 10 States

    [ad_1]

California districts to adopt CSBA resolution to fund public schools at national average by 2020 and average of top 10 states by 2025

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 8, 2018

As part of its ongoing work to ensure that all students benefit from the resources needed for a high-quality education, the California School Boards Association is calling on the Legislature to raise school funding to the national average by 2020 and to the average of the top 10 states by 2025.

“There was an era when California’s public education system was the envy of the nation and our schools were as well-funded as any in the country, but for decades now, California schools have been asked to do more with less,” said California School Boards Association President Mike Walsh. “It’s time we reverse the trend of shortchanging public schools and provide full and fair funding for all students, so they have the resources needed for success in college, career and civic life.”

California can’t expect to maintain its leadership position when it’s failing to invest in its future and languishing near the bottom nationally in school funding. Now is the time to reclaim California’s place as a beacon of opportunity and commit to full and fair funding for all public school students.

Vernon M. Billy, CSBA CEO & Executive Director

“Our members are charged with providing a 21st-century education that prepares a diverse student population for an increasingly competitive, global and technological society. Yet, the funding from the state is inadequate for this task and just a fraction of that offered by some peer states,” explained CSBA CEO & Executive Director Vernon M. Billy. “California can’t expect to maintain its leadership position when it’s failing to invest in its future and languishing near the bottom nationally in school funding. Now is the time to reclaim California’s place as a beacon of opportunity and commit to full and fair funding for all public school students.”

Despite boasting the sixth-largest economy in the world and the highest gross domestic product of any state, California ranks at or near the bottom nationally in nearly every measure of school funding and staffing. Under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), revenue for K-12 schools has only recently returned to 2007 levels, meaning funding has not substantially increased, on an inflation-adjusted basis, for more than a decade.

In order to meet the growing needs of California’s 6.2 million public school students and address the financial challenges faced by rising costs, CSBA has developed a Full and Fair Funding Resolution for adoption by its nearly 1,000 member school districts and county offices of education. The resolution highlights the threat that underinvestment in schools poses to our communities and calls on the State to meet its responsibilities to today’s students and to California’s future.

In the 1970s, California ranked in the top five nationally in school funding; currently, California is 41st and trails the average of the top 10 states by almost $7,000 in per-pupil funding, depriving students of critical opportunities for academic, social and emotional development and essential preparation for a rapidly changing economy.

CSBA is a nonprofit association representing nearly 1,000 K-12 school districts and county offices of education throughout California.

MI Folk School Launches Crowdfunding Campaign: Seeks to Build Community Campus $40,000 Goal to Win Matching Grant Through MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places Initiative

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 16, 2017

The Michigan Folk School is putting down roots in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After hosting classes in various locations since 2011, the school will settle at Staebler Farm Park where it will offer courses in traditional skills like blacksmithing, woodworking, foraging, cheesemaking, canning and animal husbandry. Upon the successful completion of a $40,000 crowdfunding campaign, the non-profit will build a public campus and recreation space. The project’s first phase will include a blacksmithing and woodworking studio, with future planned growth including community garden spaces and multipurpose teaching building.

It is fitting that the Michigan Folk School will build its campus at Staebler Farm Park, the site of the Staebler homestead for over 100 years. The Michigan Folk School aims to create a community engaged in authentic, hands-on experiences through sharing of traditional folk arts, crafts, music and skills. By engaging visitors in an inspiring natural setting, the Folk School will honor the agricultural heritage and history of the Staebler land.

The endeavor is made possible through a partnership with Washtenaw Country Parks and Recreation Commission as well as a matching grant by the Michigan Economic Development Commission (MEDC). The partnership with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission will allow Staebler Farm Park to be open to the public through hiking trails, fishing piers and other access points. Although course fees help the Folk School continue to operate, some courses will be available for free.

The campaign will run from Nov. 15-Dec. 15. Campaign donations will be matched by the MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places (PSCP) program contingent upon reaching the $40,000 goal through crowdfunding. Interested parties are encouraged to donate and learn more at http://www.patronicity.com/mifolkschool.

Jason Gold, founder and director, explained what impact the donations will have. “The Public Spaces Community Places program will enable us directly to repurpose a 1947 workshop into a modern handwork woodshop and blacksmithing studio. We will use these studios to offer folk courses and workshops taught by masters of craft, as well as studio space for the community to perfect their craft. But the grant will do more than just repurpose a building; it will initiate a community campus. Once we raise the $40,000, and PSCP matches this amount, Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission will install parking, septic and fields, wells and accessible sidewalks throughout the campus area. It will also trigger WCPRC to build a multi-purpose building to be used by the folk school for additional community and visitor programming and studio space.” The additional space will allow the folk school to host more hands-on courses such as stained glass, photography, cheesemaking and canning.

Public Spaces Community Places is a collaborative effort of the MEDC, the Michigan Municipal League and Patronicity, in which local residents can use crowdfunding to be part of the development of strategic projects in their communities and be backed with a matching grant from MEDC. Communities, nonprofits and other business entities can apply at https://patronicity.com/puremichigan.

The Public Spaces Community Places initiative started in 2014 with MEDC providing matched funding of up to $50,000 for community improvement projects throughout Michigan. As of June 15, 2017, MEDC has provided $3,766,500 in matching grants. Since the launch of the program, 125 projects have been successful in reaching their goal, with $4.5 million raised from 19,988 individual donors.

U.K. education technology firm to enter U.S. market – negotiating to launch trials with U.S. colleges in 2018

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 23, 2017

Solutionpath, a U.K. education technology business is set to revolutionize the way universities are able to harness their student data after a three-year trial of its pioneering analysis and monitoring software. The pilot project, at Nottingham Trent University in the U.K., has demonstrated marked improvements in students’ academic performance, with over 15 percent more of their students now achieving top-class degrees.

Solutionpath, founded in 2012, has developed a software product called StREAM which measures and analyses student ‘engagement’, accurately identifying students who are at risk of early withdrawal from their course, or of under-achieving academically.

There’s a very clear association between students using the StREAM software, and their academic success, particularly when compared to their peers who were not using it.

David Woolley, Head of Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach, Nottingham Trent University

The software will be launched in the U.S. at the EDUCAUSE Annual conference at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Oct. 31.

The firm has already met with several U.S. colleges and has announced it will embark on initial data analysis and verification projects, and Beta testing of their enhanced U.S. software package early in 2018.

The company’s sophisticated analytics software monitors and assesses digital interactions logged each time a student ‘engages’ with the university or college by carrying out day-to-day activities such as using the library or attending a lecture, alongside data on academic progress. The resulting analytics enable universities to identify students at academic risk at a much earlier stage so that staff can intervene and offer the help and support required.

Solutionpath has been working with Nottingham Trent University for the past three years, trialing and developing the system with undergraduates. The software is particularly valuable in the first year of students’ degree courses, one of the most common times for problems to arise in the transition from high school to university.

David Woolley, head of schools, colleges and community outreach at Nottingham Trent University, said: “There’s a very clear association between students using the StREAM software and their academic success, particularly when compared to their peers who were not using it.

“We saw some impressive results: in 2015-16 over 65 percent of students who used the Solutionpath software achieved a 2:1 or first class degree compared to just under 50 percent of students who did not use StREAM. Students who used it more often were even more successful, with 72 percent of those who logged in ten or more times scoring a 2:1 or first.”

Howard Hall, CEO and co-founder of Solutionpath, said: “While the analytics that StREAM delivers are highly complex, as the trial with Nottingham Trent has shown, the benefits for both students and universities of using big data in this way are beautifully simple. Dropping out of university or under-achieving in their degree can be a personal disaster for a young person and extremely worrying for their family, and for the university, the loss of course fee revenues involved is significant too.

“Our analytics not only help prevent a student reaching these crisis points where they no longer feel they can continue with their studies but also help keep students engaged and motivated to achieve the best academic outcomes they can.”

“We need to ensure we find the right collaboration partners as our first U.S. clients, as we are adding more features and aspects to the software specifically to meet the needs of the U.S. market, but already the feedback has been fantastic and we are excited about our 2018 launch here,” concluded Mr. Hall.

Solutionpath is currently working with 11 universities in the U.K. and Australia. Further information can be found at http://www.solutionpath.co.uk.

Online tips are available to teachers during October’s National Bullying Prevention Month

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 2, 2017

In support of Bullying Prevention Month, Amelia teaches students in K-8 how to keep their schools bully free. Amelia is one of six relatable characters developed over decades of research and efficacy. Each character is highly researched and evidenced backed and helps thousands of teachers impart social/emotional learning and character foundation skills. “During October, Amelia is our champion character. She is a teacher’s best tool in supporting Anti-Bullying,” said Linsey Covert the driver behind a growing cloud-based, integrated coursework (TEAMology) that builds stronger, more resilient students.

What gives Amelia her street cred? Well, let’s hear from Amelia herself. “It is ok if students don’t always agree with each other or even like each other. They just need to learn how to celebrate differences, always be respectful and productively cooperate on a TEAM. When you help students build a TEAM culture, there will be no room for bullies.”

    Amelia

Dr. JoLynn Carney, Penn State University College of Education researcher, joined in the research and development of Project TEAM. “What we always suspected was that creating a positive environment by empowering the students with strong prosocial attitudes and skills would help with bullying problems, other disciplinary issues, and provide a more productive environment for learning and growing. We now have the data that applying this approach with fidelity actually works.”

Jenna St. Mars from Rostraver Elementary School in Belle Vernon, Pa has been utilizing Project TEAM in her school since the 2016-2017 school year. “The kids are really being in the house here at RES and their behavior has been fabulous since the start of the school year. We tie Amelia into our Anti-Bullying month activities very heavily. We weave her into all aspects of Bullying Prevention month as she represents inclusion and the respect for others and their differences that we want our students’ to emulate,” says Jenna.

Jen Lowe from Stafford Township SD has been using the material for over six years. “I can tell you it is worthwhile. Bullying is basically gone, and I have a better handle on my students’ emotions and how to handle them. It’s techniques we weren’t taught in school,” said Jen.

During October, TEAMology is offering tips on how to use Amelia to help students understand the value of peace, harmony and acceptance and also to give students strategies to use if faced with a bullying situation. Follow TEAMology on Facebook (TEAMology) and Twitter (@weareteamology) where all month long, Amelia will be featured along with easy to use activities and ideas for promoting Anti-Bullying.

About TEAMology: TEAMology is a culmination of decades of research and side-by-side teaching with the most renowned experts in SEL. The material uses six relatable characters and the foundations of a house called Project TEAM which teachers and students use to emulate best SEL skills and relate them to Future Ready Indexes such as career exploration practices.

Reduced Standardized Testing Makes Room for Social Emotional Learning

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 6, 2017

We have been observing the growth of STEAM, Personalized Learning (PL), Digital Learning (DL) and a host of other trends in education. With the pressure from businesses and the societal impact of many students not being prepared to handle conflicts, harassment, bullying, and problem-solving, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has been growing as a major need. Teachers across the country are embracing the opportunity to help build strong young people, as states are beginning to allow and encourage blended learning approaches.

Linsey Covert, founder of TEAMology, “Early in my school counseling career, I saw the need to create something that could change the way schools were approaching social emotional learning, school climate, and character education. I wanted to provide the necessary resources and tools for educators to help them build strong character, leadership skills, and an overall sense of helping one another. It also only made sense to make a connection to home and engage parents. So, twelve years ago, we began building courseware based on six strong character foundations, we even created six relatable characters that students ‘study’ to build their own strong foundations.  Partnering with experts in the field from Penn State University, we began testing the course work in schools five years ago. We tested, refined and researched every aspect of the coursework. It was important to us that teachers could integrate our foundations across their curriculum.”

What we did not anticipate was the impact Project TEAM would have on the teachers in terms of less teacher turnover. It appears that the teachers also find value in bonding as a team to help the students apply all the foundations developed by TEAMology.

    Dr. Richard Hazler

Dr. Richard Hazler & Dr. JoLynn Carney have spent their careers researching school violence and bullying prevention. They have been asked many times over the years to develop or partner with a bullying prevention program. “Our answer has always been ‘no’ because, while there are good programs out there that deal specifically with bullying, violence, or some other issue, we wanted a program that promoted investment and reward for the school community as a whole. The internal energy and rewards that come from such a unified and team-oriented approach is why we have actively, and professionally invested in the research, development, and evaluation of Project TEAM.”

“What it takes to reduce bullying is a community that creates an environment where the behavior is not accepted and helping behaviors are supported. The TEAM concept is really a critical one for schools that can allow schools to see change. Dr. JoLynn Carney joined in the research and development of Project TEAM. “What we always suspected was that creating a positive environment by empowering the students with strong prosocial attitudes and skills would help with bullying problems, other disciplinary issues, and provide a more productive environment for learning and growing.  We now have the data that applying this approach with fidelity actually works. “What we did not anticipate,” Dr. Hazler said. “Was the impact Project TEAM would have on the teachers in terms of less teacher turnover. It appears that the teachers also find value in bonding as a team to help the students apply all the foundations developed by TEAMology.” Dr. Carney added, “That is just very satisfying.”

Dr. Sue Kanigsberg, Asst. Director of Educational Services, of Lincoln Intermediate Unit, has thoroughly reviewed the materials on the platform. “Now that students and teachers in Pennsylvania’s third through eighth grades will spend 20 percent less time on statewide testing, TEAMology will help teachers do more of what they entered teaching to do in the first place – focus on kids rather than tests. For administrators, it helps get a jump start on Chapter 339 and the Future Ready Index mandates that take effect in the fall of 2018.”

In early 2016, TEAMology began to see interest from school districts grow rapidly. “All this hard work and development was paying off,” Linsey said. TEAMology began to research would it would take to build a cloud-based home for all of the character material so teachers would have easier access. As the program was taking hold in schools, TEAMology wanted the materials to be accessible to all teachers. Linsey pushed, “Not only easy access, we went much further. Teachers are collaborating and helping build the materials to be even stronger.  I understand what it means to be in the trenches, and what support and sharing best practices can mean from my peers.” The platform launched in July and early going is encouraging as over 1,000 teachers are onboarded, using the material, offering their help and collaborating with one another.  Jen Lowe from Stafford Township SD has been using the material for over six years.  “I can tell you it is worthwhile.  Bullying is basically gone, and I have a better handle on my students’ emotions and how to handle them.  It’s techniques we weren’t taught in school,” said Jen. Chris Schmidt says, “Now that the materials are in the cloud, more teachers joining will make the program stronger.”

According to Lindsay Read, manager of research at CASEL (and yes it’s an acronym) Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning, “As more programs are being taken up (SEL) in schools and districts, there becomes this greater demand to assess them, to see if they’re working, to see if students are, in fact, learning the skills that are being  taught.”

“Having a well-respected organization such as CASEL research helping to educate and emphasize the importance of SEL, is the type of efforts we need to make SEL a part of a lasting fabric in schools.  The data points we are beginning to collect could become important to CASEL type research efforts,” said Linsey.

About TEAMology: TEAMology is a culmination of decades of research and side-by-side teaching with the most renowned experts in SEL. The material is based on six relatable characters and the foundations of a house called Project TEAM that teachers and students use to emulate best strong skills and relate them to future Ready Indexes such as career exploration practices. AMIDEAST to Celebrate “Education Hero” Maroun Semaan

    [ad_1]

Lebanese philanthropist, entrepreneur to be honored at AMIDEAST Award Gala, October 14, 2017, in Beverly Hills, California

Lebanese philanthropist and entrepreneur Maroun Semaan will be posthumously honored for his significant contributions to the advancement of education at the AMIDEAST Award Gala in Beverly Hills on October 14, 2017.  Mr. Semaan is the first recipient of the AMIDEAST Education Hero Award, an honor established by AMIDEAST to recognize individuals for their exemplary dedication to improving education in Lebanon.

Mr. Semaan believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and prepare citizens to be effective leaders. Education was key to his own success. Growing up in modest circumstances, the sixth of seven children in a middle-class family from a village in the south of Lebanon, he was motivated by the value his parents placed on education. He showed early signs of promise in the public school he attended and ranked first in the whole of Lebanon on the high school baccalaureate government exam. With the help of a scholarship to study at the American University of Beirut, he went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 1977.

“Maroun was a wonderful trustee, businessman, and leader, but more than that, he was an imaginative and firm supporter of a better tomorrow for all of Lebanon and the Arab world.

    Dr. Fadlo Khuri, AUB President

With prospects in Lebanon clouded by civil war, he began his career in Oman, working for Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) for over a decade. He then co-founded the oil facilities company Petrofac, which under his direction became a world leader in the field of oil and gas technology. By 2010, Petrofac had grown to employ 14,000 people and had revenues of $4.35bn.

Seeking new challenges, Mr. Semaan resigned in 2013 to found AlCazar Capital, a multifaceted investment company, and focused his energies on entrepreneurial endeavors in renewable energy, telecommunications, and real estate. He also increased his philanthropic activities and established the Semaan Foundation in 2011 to provide critical support in the fields of education, health care, and social welfare.

In the field of education, his own experience as a scholarship student inspired his dedication to helping others pursue a world-class education. He served as a trustee of the American University of Beirut (AUB) and American University of Sharjah, supporting these institutions’ efforts to provide scholarships and innovative research programs. That included a gift in 2017 that was the largest single donation in AUB’s history, exceeding the previously largest gift of $32 million. The Semaan Foundation’s support for education also benefited other institutions, among them Balamand University, where the new chemical engineering building bears his name, and AMIDEAST/Lebanon, which received funding for scholarship programs and youth-focused initiatives that advanced entrepreneurship and training for English language teachers.

Mr. Semaan was recognized for his generous and dedicated support of education. “Maroun believed deeply in the power of education and its role in preparing the citizen leader,” said Dr. Philip Khoury, AUB Board Chair. “Maroun was a wonderful trustee, businessman, and leader, but more than that, he was an imaginative and firm supporter of a better tomorrow for all of Lebanon and the Arab world,” said AUB President Dr. Fadlo Khuri.

Perhaps the most insightful account of Mr. Semaan’s commitment to education comes from his daughter Nour. Speaking of the recent major gift to AUB, she said that it would help the school educate “future generations of students who will serve the needs of Lebanon and the rest of the Middle East,” and help Lebanon “resume its avant-garde role in the enlightenment and development of the region by contributing to the revolution in technology and modern sciences.”

The AMIDEAST Education Hero Award recognizes outstanding individuals who share AMIDEAST’s commitment to education and expanding opportunities for future generations in Lebanon.  “The ability of the education community to provide quality educational opportunities depends on the generosity and commitment of individuals like Maroun Semaan,” said AMIDEAST President and CEO Theodore H. Kattouf.

Commenting on the selection of Mr. Semaan to receive this award, AMIDEAST/Lebanon Advisory Board Chair Anis Nassar noted, “We are honored that the first AMIDEAST Education Hero Award recognizes a man from Lebanon whose support and advocacy for education made an impact especially in his home country. His vision was broad, as he saw his country’s prospects tied to the region’s ability to achieve a brighter future for its youth. Through the institutions that he chose to support, he will have an enduring legacy in Lebanon and beyond.”

  • Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation and The LV Project Introduce Life Vest Education Curriculum for High-School Students in 22 States

Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation and The LV Project Introduce Life Vest Education Curriculum for High-School Students in 22 States

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 8, 2017

Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation, a leader in high school outdoor education, and The LV Project, an organization dedicated to preventing lake drownings, have teamed up to deliver a one-of-a kind, powerfully-crafted curriculum for students who participate in Outdoor Adventures classes. The life vest curriculum is part of a comprehensive education program which teaches students about all types of outdoor activities including Hunter Education, Angling, Boater Education, and Paddle Sports. The curriculum will be distributed to educators in more than 320 schools in 22 states, reaching more than 30,000 students.

The life vest education component begins with the memorable story of 15-year-old Connor Gage, a high school freshman who, despite being an excellent swimmer and lifelong lake kid, lost his life to a lake drowning while at a friend’s birthday party in 2012. Students first learn Connor’s story in an interactive exercise called “Five Hours One Friday”, which provides insight into the circumstances which led to his death. The program builds on Connor’s story with useful, educational and powerful life-saving information that will benefit the students for years to come.

“It’s impossible to hear Connor’s story and not be moved. Losing a child is tragic. Losing a child to something preventable is downright devastating. We are honored to work with The LV Project to educate today’s youth on ways to be safe in natural water settings. Our goal is to prevent Connor’s story from being repeated,”

    Scot McClure, Education Coordinator

“It’s impossible to hear Connor’s story and not be moved. Losing a child is tragic. Losing a child to something preventable is downright devastating. We are honored to work with The LV Project to educate today’s youth on ways to be safe in natural water settings. Our goal is to prevent Connor’s story from being repeated,” said Scot McClure, Education Coordinator, Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation.

According to statistics from the CDC, drowning rates in natural water settings triple at age 15 and remain elevated through adulthood. “Too many people assume knowing how to swim makes you drown-proof. Unlike in pools, with open water, it’s our teenage sons and our fathers who are at greatest risk,” says Dana Gage, Connor’s mom and Founder of The LV Project. “The prevalent attitude toward life vest wear is remarkably similar to how seat belts were viewed in the 70s… a nuisance and not needed,” she added. “Meanwhile, more and more people die needlessly each year. A $30 life vest would have saved my son. It’s tragic. But more importantly, it’s preventable. We applaud Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation for implementing a curriculum that will not only educate but save lives for years to come.”

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in the United States:

    • The #1 cause of accidental death ages 1 – 4, #2 under age 14, and 5th overall.
    • 84% of boating fatalities are not wearing a life vest.
    • On average, 10 people die each day from unintentional drowning.

The course curriculum is fully aligned to state education standards and launches officially for the 2017-18 school year.

Star-Studded AMIDEAST Gala in Beverly Hills to Benefit Youth in Lebanon

    [ad_1]

AMIDEAST has announced that it is joining with the AMIDEAST/Lebanon Advisory Board to host the first AMIDEAST Education Hero Award Gala on October 14, 2017, in Beverly Hills, California. Headlining the evening of elegance and excellence for more than 700 guests will be Lebanese celebrities in media and music who share AMIDEAST’s education mission.  Ricardo Karam, the well-known and highly respected multimedia journalist, will host the event, while iconic multi-platinum singer and songwriter Najwa Karam and award-winning pianist and composer Guy Manoukian will showcase their extraordinary musical talents. Proceeds raised by the gala will enable AMIDEAST to expand its educational and training programs that benefit youth in Lebanon.

The event will honor the late Lebanese philanthropist and entrepreneur Maroun Semaan for his significant contributions to the advancement of education in Lebanon. Selected to be the first recipient of the AMIDEAST Education Hero Award, Mr. Semaan believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and prepare citizens to be effective leaders. Inspired by his own experience as a scholarship recipient, he was dedicated to helping others pursue a world-class education.  The Semaan Foundation, which he established, has supported the goals of a number of educational institutions. Of particular note, in early 2017 it gave the American University of Beirut (AUB) the largest single financial donation in AUB’s history, exceeding the previously largest gift of $32 million. The Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was named after him in honor of his vision and support to the university.  Mr. Semaan passed away in May 2017. The award will be accepted by his daughter Nour, in the presence of his wife Tania and daughters Tala and Maya.

“This Gala epitomizes AMIDEAST’s longstanding commitment to expand opportunities for young people across North Africa and the Middle East through education, training, and academic and professional exchanges. We also hope to reconnect with many in the large diaspora community of Southern California who were touched by AMIDEAST, whether through scholarship support or by taking a test that opened the door to study opportunities in the United States.”

Theodore Kattouf, AMIDEAST President and CEO

“Mr. Semaan was chosen for his commitment to making quality education accessible to deserving students and for his abiding interest in philanthropy to bring positive and lasting change. He built an impactful legacy that will continue to transform countless lives for the better,” said Harry H. Nadjarian, chairman of the gala and of Los Angeles-based Industrial Motor Power Corporation.
