ATP Flight School Purchases 20 Flight Simulators (AATDs) From Frasca to Support Airline Pilot Training

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Mar 14, 2022

ATP Flight School has announced the purchase of 20 Flight Simulators, specifically Advanced Aircraft Training Devices (AATDs), from Frasca Flight Simulation. Carrying a list price of six million dollars, the FAA-approved AATDs will be used exclusively in ATP’s Airline Career Pilot Program to train the next generation of airline pilots.

ATP pioneered accelerated airline pilot training in 1984 and, since then, has continued investing in new technology to lead industry performance and provide efficient training that develops professional airline pilots. The purchase of 20 simulators from Frasca represents the next evolution of that mission, as ATP expands its fleet of simulators, making it possible to introduce students to foundational skills in a safe and controlled environment. This airline-oriented approach increases proficiency and maximizes the time spent learning in the aircraft.

Each device features an accurate physical representation of either a Piper Archer or Cessna Skyhawk flight deck, with 220° wrap-around visuals surrounding the student. Inside, actual Garmin G1000 avionics mirror the identically equipped Archers and Skyhawks in ATP’s fleet, including the 40-plus new aircraft ATP has on order. Active control loading is paired with modeled flight data to replicate the aerodynamics and control feedback of the actual aircraft. This industry-leading fidelity and realism allow for a more impactful transfer of learning and skill from the simulator to the airplane, increasing the effectiveness of training.

“Key to providing the most efficient path to a successful airline pilot career is investing in new technologies and resources that allow ATP students to train more effectively and safely,” said Michael Arnold, Director of Marketing, ATP Flight School. “Investing in these state-of-art AATDs increases safety during the initial stages of training and will allow students to gain proficiency in fundamental skills on the ground to maximize their time in the air.”

“Frasca and ATP have been partners for many years. These 20 new Frasca FTD’s for the C172 and Archer will support ATP’s training programs with the most technically advanced and realistic flight simulation available. This will ensure a maximum transfer of learning and contribute to increased safety,” stated John Frasca, President of Frasca International, Inc.

ATP operates 450 aircraft and 130 simulators across 70 locations, including an existing fleet of Level 5 and 6 flight training devices. Deliveries of the new Frasca simulators will begin at the end of the second quarter and continue through year-end.

ACE Scholarships Louisiana Announces New President

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Feb 17, 2022

The ACE Scholarships Board of Directors has named Melissa Landry as its new president, effective Feb. 14, 2022.

“In Melissa Landry, we have chosen an energetic, proven leader who holds a clear vision for how to position ACE for a new phase of growth in Louisiana,” says Boysie Bollinger, Chairman of the National Advisory Board for ACE Scholarships, one of the largest providers of privately funded K-12 scholarships for economically disadvantaged students in the U.S. “It is no secret that far too many children are trapped in failing schools and, in the aftermath of COVID-19, the crisis has only gotten worse. Creating educational opportunities for low-income families is more important than ever. I’m confident she possesses the skills and the passion necessary to scale ACE to have an even greater impact in the years ahead.”

Landry comes to ACE as a veteran communication strategist and fundraiser, with over 15 years of experience working on some of Louisiana’s most demanding public policy challenges. An accomplished writer and speaker, Landry has developed and implemented a wide array of campaigns and initiatives on behalf of Fortune 500 companies, trade associations, and not-for-profit organizations. Before joining the private sector, Landry held several high-profile positions in state government, including her work with elected officials on both sides of the aisle to secure billions of dollars from Congress to rebuild Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

“As a first-generation college graduate, I have a deep, personal connection to ACE’s mission to ensure that all children have equal access to quality education,” says Landry. “It is truly the honor of a lifetime to join this talented team in working with our dedicated donors to continue to expand upon ACE’s impact in Louisiana.”

Landry holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Louisiana State University (’03) and is a distinguished graduate of George Washington University’s Semester in Washington program (’01). She is currently pursuing an M.B.A from Tulane University (’22).

Landry is the past president of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, a member of the Public Relations Association of Louisiana, and the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Federalist Society.

  • JScreen Honors February as National Cancer Prevention Month

JScreen Honors February as National Cancer Prevention Month

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Feb 15, 2022

JScreen, a national non-profit public health initiative dedicated to preventing genetic diseases, announces its participation in National Cancer Prevention Month in February of 2022. JScreen is focused on raising awareness about hereditary cancers and works in association with Emory University’s Department of Human Genetics to make cancer genetic testing affordable and accessible. To do this, JScreen offers its CancerGEN test: an easy, at-home saliva test that screens for genetic risks for many types of cancer. The mission of JScreen is to ensure healthy futures through genetic testing and education, and it will be stepping up that mission this February.

The pandemic has made clear to everyone the importance of healthcare and taking preventative measures against disease. With the majority of Cancer Awareness Months occurring in the fall, such as Breast Cancer in October, and Prostate and Ovarian Cancer in September, JScreen emphasizes the importance of maintaining the same level of awareness year-round. CancerGEN, JScreen’s cancer genetic test, analyzes more than 60 cancer susceptibility genes associated with hereditary risks for breast, ovarian, prostate, colorectal, skin, and many other cancers. If a person tests positive, they are able to take action for the prevention or early detection of associated cancers. By providing convenient, at-home access to cutting-edge genetic testing technology, education, and genetic counseling services, JScreen strives to minimize the incidence of hereditary cancers and helps to ensure bright and healthy futures.

“We understand the financial challenges and accessibility issues facing many Americans,” says Hillary Regelman, Director of National Outreach and Marketing at JScreen. “We know from statistics that half of all men and a third of all women will develop cancer at some point in their lives. We are working toward a future where those numbers aren’t quite so staggering, and that starts with awareness and eliminating barriers to genetic testing.”

Getting tested through JScreen is easy. All one has to do to receive the simple at-home test is to sign up online. The person will then provide a saliva sample and use the pre-paid postage to mail it in (JScreen was quarantine-friendly even before the pandemic). JScreen’s tests use state-of-the-art genetic sequencing technology to ensure highly accurate results. The robust cancer testing panel includes genes that are actionable, meaning something can be done to help prevent cancer if a person tests positive. JScreen provides results in three weeks or less. A unique feature of JScreen’s process is that it provides access to licensed genetic counselors who provide consults via phone or secure video conferencing to ensure that people understand their results.

In addition to their CancerGEN test, JScreen offers ReproGEN, a reproductive carrier screening test that gives prospective parents information about the risk of genetic diseases in their future children so they can plan for the health of their families.

As a not-for-profit home education and genetic screening program, one of JScreen’s goals is to make testing affordable. With insurance, CancerGEN costs $199 and ReproGEN costs $149, and genetic counseling is included. JScreen offers need-based financial assistance for qualifying individuals.

The proof of JScreen’s passion for saving lives is in the incredible stories they hear, the healthy babies that are born, and the people who now take action to avoid future cancer diagnoses. As the team at JScreen likes to say: “We are a small team with a huge footprint.”

Austin Pets Alive! | APA! Has Saved 100K Lives!

    [ad_1]

    Feb 09, 2022

Austin Pets Alive! was founded in 2008 fueled by a need to save companion animals whose lives would be lost without our support.

We looked at our community and saw so many animals unnecessarily losing their lives due to a lack of resources and education.

Our mission is to promote and provide the resources, education, and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals. And yesterday, because of our community’s long-held trust and generosity, APA! celebrated our 100,000th life saved. We had city council members Leslie Pool and Kathie Tovo join us along with board members and staff as we read a proclamation celebrating 100K lives saved with the adorable Copper present as our 100,000th life.

This celebration doesn’t just belong to APA!, it belongs to each and every one of you. So many of those furry lives saved are sitting with you now as you read this email, smiling on your phone backgrounds, or being lovingly remembered for their impact on your hearts. We invite you to watch this video showcasing just a few of the 100,000 pets your support has saved.

Thank you, Friend, for being a part of the first 100,000 lives saved by APA! and we know we can count on you for the next. Whether it is our Parvo Puppy ICU, the Feline Leukemia Adoption Center, our Medical Triage & Wellness Clinic, or another innovative program, please know that APA! will always be here for animals in need, just like you have always been there for us.

Luca & Friends is the First Educational App for Kids Using AI Technology to Combine Learning and Fitness

    [ad_1]

App gets kids moving with fun, immersive educational games covering topics in English and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 8, 2022

The World Health Organization recommends 60 minutes of exercise daily, yet 76% of American kids are falling short of that goal. To help families, schools and out-of-school time programs address this issue in today’s tech-driven world, the health and fitness company GOFA INTERNATIONAL has launched Luca & Friends, a new ground-breaking app that uses AI (artificial intelligence) technology to get kids moving through fun, immersive educational games.

Luca & Friends is the first app in the U.S. to combine learning and fitness via cutting-edge AI motion technology. Designed for kids ages 4-8, the app provides an interactive learning experience in which players play games by moving to select the right answers. Using basic movements and following simple directions, players might stretch or jump in order to “touch” or “catch” the right answers, helping them build strength, endurance, coordination and flexibility while practicing English and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills.

“In an age where kids are spending more and more time in front of their screens, we have created a way to make that time more educational and active,” said Wayne Chung, CEO and Co-Founder of GOFA INTERNATIONAL, creators of Luca & Friends. “This app includes principles of English such as nouns and grammar, as well as STEM content such as knowledge of insects, vegetables and fruits and skip counting, and provides kids with fun, exciting and engaging games designed to help instill healthy habits. Through the use of AI technology, these games encourage movement and learning, giving kids the perfect platform on which to improve their knowledge and increase their daily exercise.”

The Luca & Friends story centers on a “galaxy far, far away” where Prince Luca and his alien friends Pumkey, Digby, and Mighty Coca, embark on a mission to save Earth from hate, fighting and hurt. The characters then appear in the app to connect kids to the exciting worlds of learning and movement.

Key features of Luca & Friends will include:

    • Social interaction – All games are socially interactive with a leader board and other social elements.
    • Educational Content – Luca & Friends offers over 100 lessons and activities covering English and STEM topics. All content has been created by accredited teachers and trainers and is linked to curriculum standards.
    • Rewards – Luca & Friends offers loyalty and reward programs to motivate kids to stay active.
    • Parent Dashboard (Coming Late Feb 2022) – The Parent Zone progress dashboard shows parents the play history for their child and allows them to track their child’s growth status.
    • Playback Mode – The app collects a short video of the player so they can see themselves move during gameplay.
    • A “quiet mode” (Coming Late Feb 2022) – Players can revert back to touch-screen play in situations where there isn’t the opportunity to move around.
    • Multiple display options – While the app is recommended for iPad and tablet use, players can also connect their device to a large-format smart TV through AirPlay or Chromecast and play in front of the larger screen.

Luca & Friends is currently available for iPhone and Android devices via Google Play and the Apple App Store. For more information, visit https://www.lucafriends.com/.

Global On-Ramp to Media Literacy, the Center for Media Literacy’s New Free Online Media Literacy Training Launches Feb. 2

    [ad_1]

Evaluating today’s media messages can be complex, and the information landscape is rapidly changing. CML’s 90-minute course makes evidence-based media literacy education available to everyone with internet access, everywhere in the world

The Center for Media Literacy (CML), a leader in media literacy research, program design and evidence-based frameworks since 1989, has launched Global On-ramp to Media Literacy, a 90-minute, self-guided course that can introduce the concepts of media literacy education to anyone with access to the internet, anywhere in the world. The interactive course uses texts, videos, quizzes and infographics to cover topics that range from CML’s long-proven Five Key Questions and Core Concepts and Empowerment Spiral, to information about copyright, to CML’s MediaLit Kit – a collection of core ideas and tools that are fundamental to media literacy’s inquiry-based pedagogy. The course was developed by Linda M. Wiley, an experienced instructional designer, along with CML President Tessa Jolls and Monika Hanley, a CML associate, to guide users through the articulation of media literacy theory, practice and implementation.

“Now is the time for media literacy to take a more prominent seat at the education table, as well as around family dinner tables,” said Jolls. “Media literacy educators and practitioners have long known that there are countless applications of media literacy, but the current epidemic of harmful disinformation has shone a spotlight on what makes CML’s work more important now than ever before. We are proud to offer Global On-ramp to Media Literacy as a public service to anyone around the globe who is interested in learning more about becoming a wiser and more informed media consumer and producer. Our nations’ security, our local communities, our families and our health depend upon it.”

The initial launch of Global On-ramp to Media Literacy is supported by the US State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund (CDAF). The CDAF grant, which is provided to alumni of the Fulbright Scholars Program, enables CML to make global citizens and educators aware of the course in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America. CML’s affiliates in Singapore; Lima, Peru (Medios Claros); Los Angeles, CA (Ignite Global Good, LLC) and Kaunas, Lithuania (Vytautus Magnus University) will undertake communications campaigns through social media, email, media relations and other outreach activities. The course is now available in English. Versions in Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, Russian and Chinese will launch very soon.

Like a map for a journey, the Center for Media Literacy provides a vision and a guide for navigating today’s complex, global media culture. For more information about CML’s Global On-ramp to Media Literacyplease visit www.medialit.org, or follow CML on Facebook.

  • WyoTech Providing Quality Education and Career Training During Pressing Diesel Technician Shortage

WyoTech Providing Quality Education and Career Training During Pressing Diesel Technician Shortage

    [ad_1]

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates over 28,000 openings annually over the next decade, further demonstrating WyoTech’s key role in the job market as a leader in diesel and automotive training.

    Press Release

    Jan 24, 2022

WyoTech, a diesel tech and auto mechanic trade school, continues to provide students with key opportunities for careers as diesel technicians as the industry experiences a decline in qualified candidates. The American Transportation Research Institute (ARTI) has named the ongoing diesel technician shortage as a top concern heading into 2022. This is especially worrying when considering estimations made by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which predicts that over 28,000 openings for diesel service technicians and mechanics will surface annually for the next 10 years.

The TechForce Foundation, a non-profit organization that champions all students to and through their education and into careers as professional technicians, made a series of projections that suggested the demand for new entrant diesel technicians will rise to 35,000 openings by the year 2024.

In an effort to promote technician training and placement during this period of increasing demand, the ATRI has encouraged collaboration between motor carriers, diesel technician programs and schools, and community colleges. The goal is to create an encompassing and comprehensive education for future diesel tech professionals.

“The shortage of technicians is not a problem of the future, it is now. This has a large impact on not just C&B Operations, but on many other companies across the nation. It greatly impedes the ability of companies to repair products and return them to customers in a timely manner. Industry partners such as Wyotech have been a blessing producing quality students to bridge that gap of the supply meeting the demand,” said Adam Somers, Regional Human Resources Manager for C&B Operations.

Respondents in the TechForce Foundation study also approved of this strategy, with 55.6% expressing that the best approach to diesel technician recruitment involved the collaboration of schools and employers. Additionally, 14.2% of respondents suggested that focusing the industry’s efforts on military veterans, particularly those with experience working on military equipment, was the best recruitment strategy. This would involve employers and educational institutions assisting veterans directly, as well as participating in conjoined efforts with the U.S. Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Services.

The desire for collaboration between motor carriers and technician schools is paramount for Laramie, Wyoming-based WyoTech, which recently played a key role in recruiting students for positions at a John Deere dealer. In an effort to continue its mission of providing students with the ability to turn their educational experiences into careers, WyoTech has prioritized the promotion of networking and career-focused events as a key part of its curriculum.

In addition to giving students the tools necessary to succeed within the field, WyoTech also hosts quarterly job fairs during which companies from across the country recruit candidates for technician roles in a variety of industries. While each individual WyoTech student is unique in terms of their background, skill sets, and interests, WyoTech’s approach to training is universal in its ability to prepare every student with a strong professional foundation. The diesel mechanic school’s instructors make it a priority to give each individual student a chance to succeed within their respective classes. This approach improves students’ chances of securing positions within their desired industry after graduation.

“Collaboration between diesel tech schools – such as WyoTech – are vital to not only the industry, but also the current supply chain issues that are plaguing the nation,” said WyoTech President Jim Mathis. “The technical school industry, as well as the ATRI, knows the importance of the education and training we provide students and what it means for the industry as a whole. The more schools that can collaborate with employers and motor carriers, the better long-term outlook the industry has.”

    Jan 18, 2022

While COVID continues to ravage the nation, working families are struggling as thousands of Child Care providers have closed their doors. This has left millions of desperate parents who are either juggling working from home while watching the kids or who are quitting work all together. In an effort to help bolster the nation’s crippled economy and get parents back in the workforce, TOOTRiS has expanded its on-demand Child Care platform to all 50 states. With more than 180,000 licensed providers currently on its platform, TOOTRiS touts the largest network of available, real-time Child Care options in the nation.

The expansion provides much-needed resources and tools to thousands of parents, providers and employers at a time when communities across the nation face an alarming Child Care deficit.

“American families are in trouble. If we don’t fix the broken Child Care sector, our economy will not rebound and working parents – especially women – will continue to suffer the consequences,” said TOOTRiS Founder and CEO Alessandra Lezama.

Currently, a majority of US families do not have access to affordable and quality Child Care, primarily due to one or more of the following reasons: a) they can’t afford it, b) they don’t know where to go to search or can’t find open enrollments, or c) the only programs that are available to them don’t meet their needs.

“We applaud TOOTRiS for introducing an innovative way of helping working parents and employers easily connect with real-time availability of affordable quality Child Care,” said Cindy Lehnhoff, Director of the National Child Care Association, a nationwide nonprofit that advocates and promotes high quality Child Care. “This type of universal online platform also levels the playing field for Family Child Care providers and allows them to stay afloat during these uncertain times.”

TOOTRiS connects parents, providers and employers in real-time, enabling:

    • Parents to search near their home or work, using filters to find daycare or non-standard hour care that fits their needs and budgetary requirements, even for temporary slots and drop-ins – all accessible for online via desktop, tablet, or a mobile app.
    • Providers to have access to free tools and resources needed to grow their programs and boost enrollments, while automating the administrative functions such as payments.
    • Employers – big and small – to have affordable and seamless solutions to offer Child Care as a Benefit, which is critical for attracting and retaining talent at a time when there are 9.2 million unfilled jobs across the US.

“Child Care is a business issue and a workforce enabler. Through TOOTRiS, we can re-engineer a scalable and thriving Child Care system of the future, while redesigning the workplace to be more equitable and family friendly,” Lezama said. “This is the future of work, and key to our nation’s ability to compete on a global scale.”

The nationwide TOOTRiS rollout is a milestone for the startup, founded in 2019 to transform Child Care so that every working parent — especially women — has the same opportunity for advancement by having access to affordable, high quality Child Care; and so that every child, regardless of household income, has the same opportunity to early childhood education that can ensure their kindergarten readiness, and academic success.

    About TOOTRiS
TOOTRiS is reinventing Child Care, making it convenient, affordable and on-demand. As the world shifts to digitalized services, TOOTRiS helps parents and providers connect and transact in real-time, empowering working parents – especially women – to secure quality Child Care, while allowing providers to unlock their potential and fully monetize their program. It is the only system in today’s marketplace that tracks, publishes and forecasts Child Care availability in real-time and is accessible in multiple languages. • Effective School Solutions Announces the 3rd Annual Madison Holleran Mental Health Action Scholarship Program

Effective School Solutions Announces the 3rd Annual Madison Holleran Mental Health Action Scholarship Program

    [ad_1]

Today,  Effective School Solutions (ESS), a leading provider of embedded whole school mental health services, and the Madison Holleran Foundation announced the 3rd Annual Madison Holleran Mental Health Action Scholarship. Madison Holleran was a 2013 graduate of Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, NJ, where she excelled in academics as well as being a stellar athlete. She went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the track team. Tragically, Madison took her own life during the spring semester of her freshman year. ESS and the Madison Holleran Foundation have named this scholarship in Madison’s memory to not only drive awareness about suicide prevention, but also to hear from high school students about innovative approaches they believe their schools can take to help young adults navigate through the mental health challenges they are facing.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted student mental health, but it also reduced the stigma of discussing mental health and highlighted the importance of mental health programs. Now is the time for action. Therefore, this year, scholarships will be awarded to four high school seniors who implemented a mental health program in their school. The four finalists will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship. To be considered for the scholarship, students must submit an application and a 1,500-word essay describing their program. Applications and essays (in PDF format only) can be submitted to madisonholleranscholarship@effectiveschoolsolutions.com. Scholarship awards will be made based on program innovation and the opportunity for their program to be expanded to schools across the country. Click here for scholarship eligibility and contest rules.

“We’re proud to announce this scholarship, which reflects the importance of providing mental health supports to our youth,” said Duncan Young, CEO of Effective School Solutions. “We’re hoping that the competition for these scholarships will be an opportunity to amplify the voices of ideas of young people when it comes to mental health support.” The contest will run from Jan. 10, 2022, through April 1, 2022. The award winner will be announced no later than May 16, 2022.

Carli Bushoven, Executive Director of the Madison Holleran Foundation stated, “The Madison Holleran Foundation is honored to partner with Effective School Solutions for the third year and to sponsor these scholarships. Since the Foundation’s inception, our focus has been on suicide prevention and ending the stigma associated with mental illness. Our hope with these scholarships is to bring mental health and wellness to the forefront of high school and college campuses and encourage today’s students to make strides in their community with regards to mental health.”

    ###

Since 2009, Effective School Solutions has been a leader in school-based mental health. ESS partners with over 90 districts across nine states to provide comprehensive, cost-effective whole-school clinical programs to K-12 students.

The primary mission of the Madison Holleran Foundation is to prevent suicides and to assist those in a crisis situation with phone numbers and resources that will assist them during their time in crisis. They also focus on preparing high school seniors for their transition to college.

  • Tux Paint 0.9.27 Released for Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux

Tux Paint 0.9.27 Released for Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Nov 28, 2021

The Tux Paint development team is proud to announce version 0.9.27 of Tux Paint, which adds many new features to the popular children’s drawing program.

Six new Magic tools have been added to Tux Paint. “Panels” shrinks and duplicates the drawing into a 2-by-2 grid, which is useful for making four-panel comics. “Opposite” produces complementary colors. “Lightning” interactively draws a lightning bolt. “Reflection” creates a lake-like reflection on the drawing. “Stretch” stretches and squashes the picture like a fun-house mirror. Lastly, “Smooth Rainbow” provides a more gradual variation of Tux Paint’s classic “Rainbow” tool.

A number of existing Magic tools have been updated, as well. Improvements were made to “Halftone,” which simulates photographs on newsprint; “Cartoon,” which makes an image look like a cartoon drawing; and “TV,” which simulates a television screen. Additionally, “Cartoon” and “Halftone,” along with “Blocks,” “Chalk,” and “Emboss,” now offer the ability to alter the entire image at once. Finally, Magic tools are now grouped into collections of similar effects — painting, distorts, color filters, picture warps, pattern painting, artistic, and picture decorations — making it easier to find the tool you need.

Tux Paint’s Paint and Line tools now support brushes that rotate based on the angle of the stroke. This new rotation feature, as well as the older directional and animated brush features, are now visually indicated by the brush shape selector. Additionally, the Fill tool now offers a freehand painting mode for interactively coloring within a confined area.

Tux Paint Config., the separate program that ships with Tux Paint to provide a user-friendly method of altering the program’s settings, has been updated to better support larger, high-resolution displays. Also, this version introduces support for the Recycle Bin on Windows — images deleted from Tux Paint’s “Open” dialog will now be placed in the Recycle Bin rather than deleted immediately.

The Tux Paint website now hosts a new gallery showcasing fantastic artwork created by Tux Paint artists of all ages. The gallery features over 200 drawings by artists from all around the world.

Tux Paint is available for download, free of charge, from the project’s website: http://www.tuxpaint.org. Version 0.9.27 is currently available for Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, Android, Red Hat Linux, various other Linux distributions (via Flatpak), and as source code. Tux Paint is open source software and does not contain in-app advertising.

Crittenton Services of Greater Washington Hosts 133rd Annual Celebration & Fundraiser Benefiting At-Risk Youth of Color

    [ad_1]

Honors Five Distinguished Community Leaders, including 1st Female Chair of the FCC

    Press Release

    Nov 18, 2021

Today, Crittenton Services of Greater Washington, a nonprofit specializing in positive youth development to at-risk teens, will host its 133rd fundraiser. The 2021 theme, “Moments that Matter,” will highlight the stories and resiliency of youth of color impacted by the pandemic. The virtual annual celebration will take place on Nov. 18, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. More information about the event can be found here.

“My parents had me in their teens, so I know what it’s like to persevere in the face of tremendous challenges,” said Siobhan Davenport, President & CEO of Crittenton Services of Greater Washington. “Black, brown, and immigrant girls from underserved communities have quietly carried an enormous burden during the pandemic. They’ve persevered despite the odds, from homelessness and grieving the loss of loved ones, to taking on additional caregiving responsibilities at home and in school. However, the pandemic is not over for them. This event shines a light on their strength, resiliency and raises money for Crittenton to remain a stabilizing force in the lives of these girls at this critical moment in their development.”

Crittenton partners with schools to run multi-year social-emotional learning and holistic development programs for over 600 6th-12th grade girls. They live in communities with the highest violence and poverty rates and lowest academic achievement rates in the region. Still, the organization achieved a 100% graduation rate and 99% continuation rate among its girls, even at schools with 50% graduation rates. In addition, 83% of program alumnae pursued post-secondary education, including the military, vocational schools, and two-year colleges or universities.

“The moment that mattered to me was the day I realized that everyone cares at Crittenton,” said Hownisha Reed, a Crittenton program alumna. “So many people in my life had let me down, and I didn’t have the capacity to trust people. But the Crittenton team became the trusted and caring adults in my life. They opened me up to learn about myself, about life, and do things I never thought were possible.”

The virtual event will also honor five female leaders and trailblazers from the region, including:

    • Carisa Stanley Beatty, First Vice President, Amalgamated Bank,
    • Sindy Marisol Benavides, Chief Executive Officer, League of United Latin American Citizens,
    • Kate Goodall, Co-founder & CEO, Halcyon,
    • Karima Woods, Commissioner, District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities & Banking,
    • and Jessica Rosenworcel, the first female chair of the Federal Communications Commission.

“I am so honored to join the Crittenton team for another year celebrating our amazing women,” said Bryan Tramont, Crittenton Board Member and Co-Chair of the annual celebration. “In a pandemic year, Crittenton’s critical services have made a difference in the lives of so many young women across the D.C. region. Tonight’s honorees are difference makers in their own rights in business, public policy, and within the nonprofit organizations they have transformed.”

Crittenton Services of Greater Washington (CSGW) is the top leadership, empowerment, and advocacy nonprofit for at-risk youth and teen girls of color in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. CSGW partners with schools to run multi-year social and emotional learning programs that teach girls the skills to have healthy relationships, excel in school, and grow into confident and resilient young women. • Enrollment of Trade School WyoTech Grows to 685 in Three Years

Enrollment of Trade School WyoTech Grows to 685 in Three Years

    [ad_1]

The automotive, diesel, and collision trade school’s population was just 26 in 2018.

    Press Release

    Nov 8, 2021

Enrollment in trade schools is seeing record growth, with numbers almost doubling between 1999 and 2016, according to an October report from the National Center for Education Statistics. Additionally, the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal found that trade school enrollment grew from 9.6 million in 1999 to 16 million in 2014.

WyoTech, a Laramie, Wyoming-based diesel tech and auto mechanic trade school, is evidence of this growth. The vocational institution reported enrollment as of October 2021 at 685 — growing by more than 2,300% in three years.

26 students were enrolled in WyoTech in October 2018. Enrollment shot up to 228 in 2019, 488 in 2020, and 685 this October.

WyoTech’s growing enrollment is not only a sign of the economic times and job market, but also the value that students see in the automotive and diesel trade school. Skilled workers are in higher demand than ever before.

The demand for skilled workers is only growing due to the supply chain worries gripping the nation. An article from Medium states 81% of the automotive industry is concerned about visibility in the supply chain. This is due to parts either manufactured in-house or sourced from a third-party manufacturer.

“The growth of WyoTech, as well as other trade and vocational schools across the nation, is a sign of the changing times within the U.S. job market,” said WyoTech President Jim Mathis. “There has been a growing emphasis on skilled labor, as those jobs remain unfilled the longest.

“The education and experience provided by trade schools, such as WyoTech, is unmatched, provides employers with skilled labor, and students an education that you cannot get from a traditional four-year education institution.”

The rise of trade school enrollment comes as college enrollment numbers continue to fall. Data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found enrollment rates have continued to decline since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and show no signs of recovering from last year’s declines.

Undergraduate enrollment fell about 3% since fall 2020, nearly the same as last year’s decline. The total enrollment of both undergraduate and graduate students fell by more than 2% — a two-year drop of almost 5%.

More than half of U.S. colleges and universities, representing 8.4 million students, reported data to the National Student Clearinghouse’s report.

WyoTech is preparing for anticipated growth by expanding its current facilities by 90,000-square-feet in the next 12 to 18 months.

“Our recent land acquisition is another sign of our continued commitment to making WyoTech the premier automotive and diesel trade school in the nation,” said Mathis. “WyoTech’s focus is, and will always be, the students and their future. Planned expansion will enable WyoTech to provide an expanded curriculum and handle an influx of students seeking training.”

    About WyoTech

WyoTech, formerly known as Wyoming Technical Institute, is a for-profit, technical college founded in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1966. WyoTech provides training programs that prepare students for careers as technicians in the automotive and diesel industry with nine-month training programs that focus on hands-on experience.

  • Scott Central Attendance Center Senior James Darby Achieves an Impressive ACT® Composite Score of 33, After Reviewing With Jumpstart Test Prep

Scott Central Attendance Center Senior James Darby Achieves an Impressive ACT® Composite Score of 33, After Reviewing With Jumpstart Test Prep

    [ad_1]

Jumpstart Test Prep’s curriculum content review and time management strategies proved to be a successful combination by producing a gain of +6 composite points

    Press Release

    Nov 3, 2021

James Darby, now a senior at Scott Central Attendance Center, who has ambitions to study Health Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi, found one key to unlock the gate to those dreams through Jumpstart Test Prep. On his fourth ACT® attempt, Darby saw dramatic gains in his performance and improved his composite score from an initial attempt of 27 to a post Jumpstart Review score of 33. James gained in all subtest areas by improving +7 points in English, +6 points in science, +3 points in math, and +3 points in reading. The highest possible ACT® score is a 36 and the national average last year was a 20.8.

It’s no secret that discipline and perseverance are key elements to success. Darby knows this well as he is a high achieving student who is involved in both the National Honor Society and the Beta Club. His commitment to achieving success is evidenced by his improvement journey on the ACT®, a test that many high school students dread. John Johnson, a retired educator and principal from Scott County and now serving as Regional Director for Jumpstart Test Prep for Scott Central Attendance Center, applauds Darby for his improvements. “I have seen many students with scores similar to James’ who didn’t work to further improve. He is to be commended for his attitude of working hard to complete our review program to achieve higher on the ACT®. The right attitude really paid off for him and he has a bright future because of it,” said Johnson.

Darby said, “When I first took the ACT®, it was very stressful because it is nothing like an ordinary test. Jumpstart helped increase my confidence by adequately preparing me and concluding with multiple practice assessments.” The Jumpstart Review was provided to Darby through Scott Central and he completed the review both virtually and in the classroom. Darby received his improvements on his 17th birthday and said, “It was the best birthday present – Jumpstart helped me achieve my goal and I am so happy about that.”

Pam Kennedy, ACT Prep Teacher at Scott Central, shared, “When James received his improvement scores, I was so excited that I wanted to climb a tower and tell everyone because I know the difference that just made in his life!” Kennedy continued, “Jumpstart helped my students so much – it is an overall review of everything they will see on test day and it includes time management skills they definitely needed to learn. I strongly believe investing in students’ success by providing the Jumpstart Review to better prepare them is well worth it and I wish all of my students could experience the improvements that James did.”

“James represents a number of students who are able to change their futures with large improvements by using our review products to successfully prepare,” says co-founder and CEO Sha Walker. “Our review program was developed by legendary 55-year educator Dot McClendon, who has tutored thousands and thousands of students, helping them to perform their best. Jumpstart Test Prep is a proven, modern approach that works for anyone. We are so proud of James for his determination and know he has a bright future ahead.”

The company’s website, www.jumpstarttestprep.com, describes its program as a review utilizing streaming video modules that are delivered on-demand. The program is designed for classroom integration or individual study and proven to help students of all ability levels stay fully engaged. Students gain the most improvement in the shortest time by learning difficult content in a way that every student can follow and understand. Students follow and complete the accompanying workbook as the review proceeds. Modules review the must-know content, include testing strategies specific to the exam, and conclude with realistic question practice modeled from actual “retired” exams that are provided under time constraint.

According to student reviews of the program on the website, the program also helps students with time management, allowing them to work faster on test day. The company has found that when students are coached step by step, they can quickly secure significant gains, regardless of their initial proficiency in the subject area. Jumpstart’s ACT® subject area prep can be purchased à la carte at www.jumpstarttestprep.com.

    updated: Aug 12, 2021

As thousands of students return for another school year this August, local nonprofit Bible in the Schools (BITS) celebrates the start of the 100th school year that Bible History elective courses have been offered in Hamilton County’s public schools.

Since 1922, public school students in Hamilton County have taken Bible elective courses as part of their regular school day. A 100-year-old institution, Bible in the Schools is the byproduct of the vision of Dr. J. Park McCallie, founder of The McCallie School.

After observing the benefits of Bible History classes on McCallie School youth, Dr. McCallie was convinced that Bible classes are “altogether the most worthwhile courses we have.” He wanted all students, public and private, to have the opportunity to study the Bible at their school. In 1922, Dr. McCallie organized a group known as the Public School Bible Study Committee, later referred to as Bible in the Schools, and argued before the City Commission that Bible classes should be taught in the public schools.

“Today, we stand on the shoulders of one man who, in 1922, understood the academic benefit of the rigor required from students when studying such a complex text, but who also recognized that when students studied the Bible, it had a transformative impact in their lives as well as on the integrity and climate of the entire school,” said Cathy Scott, the current president of Bible in the Schools.

Bible History classes follow guidelines established by a 1980 federal court ruling, which affirmed that the teaching of for-credit non-sectarian Bible History elective classes in Hamilton County’s public middle and high schools is constitutionally permissible. Before 1980, elementary students throughout Hamilton County were eligible to take Bible courses; since the court ruling, the elective courses are only taught in middle and high schools.

The Hamilton County Bible History curricular framework is court-approved, taught from a historical and literary perspective, and aligns with the standards of the Tennessee State Department of Education. The Hamilton County Schools Bible History program continues to lead the nation with the largest concentration of public school students in any one school district studying the Bible.

Entering its 100th school year, Bible in the Schools now reaches 29 public schools and over 4,600 students. Demand for Bible History grows each school year: 2021 boasted the highest Bible History enrollment numbers since the program’s inception. Hamilton County Schools’ data reports that of the 19,006 students in the county who had access to Bible History in 2020-2021, approximately one in four students took and completed a course.

Bible History elective courses provide public school students with the opportunity to receive a viewpoint-neutral, foundational study — at no cost to taxpayers — of one of the cornerstone texts of world history. Courses like Bible History encourage responsible citizenship and contribute to a broad education. They develop cultural literacy in young minds and equip students to thrive in and contribute to a global world.

Bible in the Schools has provided public school students in Hamilton County with Bible History classes for 100 years, funded entirely by charitable community donations. Because of the generosity of the community, Bible in the Schools provided the largest community-funded donation to Hamilton County Schools in the 2020-2021 academic year.
