  • Weekend I-494 closures to impact MSP Airport access

    [ad_1]

Those traveling to and from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport this weekend are encouraged to plan ahead due to some big closures along Interstate 494.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says starting Friday at 10 p.m., the westbound lanes of I-494 will be shut down between Highway 77 and Highway 100. The ramps along that stretch will close at 8 p.m. Westbound lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

As a detour, MnDOT says westbound motorists can use northbound Hwy. 77 to westbound Hwy. 62, then southbound Hwy. 100 to westbound I-494.

Then Saturday at 10 p.m. the eastbound lanes of I-494 will close between Interstate 35W and Hwy. 77 for utility work. All ramps will also be closed. Eastbound lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Sunday.

MnDOT says eastbound motorists can detour via northbound I-35W to eastbound Hwy. 62, then to southbound Hwy. 77 to eastbound I-494. All detours will be posted.

The work is being done to “allow crews to continue construction along I-494 and prepare for winter configuration,” according to MnDOT.

  • Invasive goldfish now destined for bears, otters, seal lions at Minnesota Zoo

    [ad_1]

What started in a fishbowl is ending up in Twin Cities lakes, especially In Edina’s Lake Cornelia, where thousands of goldfish are being discovered and removed by groups like Nine Mile Creek Watershed District.

“They were seen to be very abundant fish species in the lake, more abundant than any other native species that was in the lake, and that was really a problem,” said Jordan Wein, with the watershed district.

Goldfish aren’t just out of place. They stir up the bottom of the lake, releasing phosphorus that fuels algae blooms and clouds the water. Once caught, they had one destination.

“Their only option was to landfill them, and so we kind of got in contact and made this partnership, permissible from the DNR through our permits,” Wein said.

Now, instead of being tossed out, the invasive fish are on the menu for bears, otters and sea lions at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley.

“Black bears in the wild will have a certain amount of their diet made up of fish, so the fact that we’re getting these fish in through the DNR in a way that fits our messaging needs that promotes the things that we want to promote in a conservation standpoint, while also feeding our animals, it’s just a win-win all the way around,” said Nolan Schlichter, with the Minnesota Zoo.

With the new items on the menu, these furry friends are fish out of water.

“When animals are used to eating the frozen fish we get from our other sources, and then they’re faced with these goldfish that look very different, smell very different, it could take some time to acclimate,” Schlichter said.

The watershed district says the partnership with the Minnesota Zoo is the first of its kind in the state. They’ll evaluate how it worked this season, and if successful, it could expand to other zoos or wildlife centers in the future.

EDINA, Minn. — Hennepin County officials say there is no evidence of tampering after a photo was posted to social media showing an open, unattended vehicle full of ballots.

The photograph was taken outside Edina City Hall on Friday and shared by the Minnesota Senate District 50 GOP on X.

“Do these ballots look secure to you,” the tweet said, garnering over 1,000 likes.

A spokesperson for Hennepin County said on Saturday that the county and courier have taken corrective actions to prevent a recurrence, and the driver has been terminated.

“Election security is of utmost importance, and leaving ballots unattended is simply unacceptable,” Hennepin County Auditor Daniel Rogan said. “Hennepin County is reinforcing its transfer protocols with county staff and vendors. An incident like this underscores the value of strong chain-of-custody processes, so that risk can be addressed and integrity can be verified.”

Hennepin County reports all expected ballots have been accounted for and found no evidence of tampering with sealed transfer cases. Individual ballots were also inspected and staff determined all were received in sealed condition. Both inspections are routine election integrity processes.

The vehicle contained ballots that were picked up from other cities before coming to Edina, according to the city.

Additionally, Edina released surveillance footage of the parking lot at the time, showing the ballots inside the vehicle were not tampered with.
