  • The Violet Grey Black Friday Weekend Sale Has Arrived—And Here Are 40 Seriously Chic Finds

The Violet Grey Black Friday Weekend Sale Has Arrived—And Here Are 40 Seriously Chic Finds

    [ad_1]

Black Friday, it turns out, is the one calendar event where there is absolutely no room for nostalgia. Once a crush of literal door-buster sales, the shop-a-thon has now relaxed into a multi-day sprawl (Cyber Monday included), the deals all at your fingertips. It’s still dizzying, to be sure, which is why it’s helpful when a very good shop promises a very good score. This is where Violet Grey comes into play: mainstay of Hollywood makeup artists, now offering nearly sitewide promotions (up to 50% off, with most discounts at 25%) through Cyber Monday. (There are some brand exceptions—Byredo, Chanel, and the like—but given the wealth of what remains, you won’t miss a thing.)

This edited shopping guide is the online equivalent of a beeline through the boutique. Here, you’ll find 10 essential beauty categories, with a handful of plum picks in each. (We’ve listed the full prices here, so the deals will be a bonus upon checkout.) Maybe you’ll find a few treasures for your mother, your boss, that nice neighbor who watered your plants during an overdue vacation. And of course, as they say: Treat yourself.

    Winter Moisturizers

With the official start of winter soon upon us, this is the time for surface-level fortification. Drier air means that the environment will sap water from the skin—but smartly attuned moisturizers aim to restore and replenish. Augustinus Bader’s Rich Cream (formulated with the German doctor’s proprietary TFC8 technology) helps smooth out crepe-paper lines and pigmentation while supplying deep moisture. The Super Hydrator by U Beauty delivers reparative antioxidants and hyaluronic acid in tiny capsules. Manhattan dermatologist Rose Ingleton, MD, incorporates a Jamaican superfruit blend along with ceramides into this brightening, nourishing formula. And Sisley-Paris’s much-loved Black Rose face oil, with a dry-touch finish, helps replenish the skin’s lipid barrier.

    Cult Serums

Whispered praise accompanies the best serums for good reason: The formulas are designed for peak efficacy, thanks to a boost of antioxidants, peptides, and more. A recent buzzy entry is Eighth Day, courtesy of dermatologic surgeon Antony Nakhla, DO, which features a proprietary Peptide-Rich Plasma along with anti-inflammatory botanicals and manuka honey for extra healing. The Super Anti-Aging Serum from Dr. Barbara Sturm calls on antioxidant-rich purslane and red algae, plus two types of hyaluronic acid for lasting hydration. Epi.Logic’s chicly repackaged Master Plan (from another pro, oculofacial plastic surgeon Chaneve Jeanniton, MD) uses a blend of stem cell–derived epidermal growth factors and proteins to support firm, luminous skin. There’s the power of plants, too—as seen in this powerhouse serum from Macrene Actives, created by dermatologist Macrene Armenakas, MD. The formula incorporates silver ear mushrooms, red algae, and sunflower oil extract (to name a few), all to coax skin into its most hydrated, even-toned version of itself.

    Eye Treatments

The skin around the eyes is a delicate matter, thinner and more reactive than other hardier parts of the face. That’s especially true in winter, when a night in an overheated apartment can leave you waking up to a fine patchwork of lines. RéVive’s Sensitif eye cream is a morning refresh, with peptides and brightening niacinamide alongside mineral sunscreen for gentle protection. Sisley’s eye mask is a different kind of quick fix, delivering a surge of moisture that you can tissue off (or, better yet, leave on all night). In Royal Fern’s eye cream, the blend of hyaluronic acid and antioxidants gives a cushiony, protective feel. And the plant-based treatment from Indie Lee combines tiger grass, apple stem cells, and seaweed extract to help keep the expressive eye area looking its best.

    Beauty & Wellness Tools

The extended time at home in recent years has reinforced the measurable benefits that come from taking care of one’s well-being—often with the help of some well-designed tools. For the beauty set, the arrival of ZIIP means there’s a high-tech facialist at home—the nano-currents helping to stimulate the cell’s energy production, boost circulation, and speed lymphatic drainage. Canopy’s cloudlike humidifier is a cold-weather hero, with UV technology to keep the accompanying water tank clean. Therabody’s trainer-favorite massage tool helps pummel away muscle soreness, with 40 taps per second and a suite of targeted attachments. (Data suggests an improvement in sleep quality too.) And this vibrator by Kiki de Montparnasse has a two-pronged approach: a larger end with eight vibration settings, and a narrow one that gently warms.

Kiki de Montparnasse The Dual Warming Wand

    Next-Gen Body Care

The skin that matters doesn’t stop at the neck—a realization that has been materializing on shelf in the form of advanced body care. Mutha’s contouring serum includes its M-TIGHT technology, which uses capsaicin (the active ingredient in chili peppers) to boost circulation; there are also fruit acids for exfoliation, along with hyaluronic acid and squalene for plush skin. Another targeted formula, U Beauty’s sculpting cream takes aim at fluid retention and collagen synthesis, with marine bacillus extract for a dose of nutrients. Susanne Kaufmann’s body butter, infused with olive oil, shea butter, and honey, would be a nourishing underlayer beneath pajamas. For a post-shower rubdown, Costa Brazil’s fast-absorbing body oil is a winner: Its cold-pressed star ingredients include wild-harvested kaya (supplying essential fatty acids) and cacay (touted as a natural retinol).

    Susanne Kaufmann Body Butter

    Bathing Upgrades

The tub, should you be so lucky to have one, is many things: a mandatory break from technology, an antidote to winter, a deep-tissue unwind. The category is particularly good for gifting—everyone bathes in some manner or fashion. It’s also the sort of indulgence you don’t often spring for, but should! Who doesn’t want to crack open Susanne Kaufmann’s Oil Bath for the Senses, with notes of ylang-ylang and lavender alongside rosemary extract to promote healthy circulation. Nécessaire’s eucalyptus-scented body exfoliator—with bamboo charcoal and pumice along with gentle acids to slough away dead skin—simulates the fresh branch hanging from the showerhead. The seaweed-infused soak from African Botanics is a remineralizing reboot, with circulating-boosting caffeine and an aromatic blend of lemongrass, juniper, and African buchu leaf. A pre-soak scrub with Sturm’s body brush—palm-size and stocking-ready—makes a nice pairing.

    Hair Essentials

The emphasis on healthy hair lately is now coming even from the doctor-led skin-care brands, which are taking a scalp-forward approach. Augustinus Bader’s treatment serum—part of the line’s debut hair range and designed to be massaged in after showering—uses its TFC8 complex to support the environment for strong hair growth; clinical trials show improved hair-shaft thickness and boosted shine. The wide-tooth comb from Yves Durif is a classic for good reason, as elegant as it is good for detangling. This stylist-favorite T3 dryer is a winter essential, with 15 heat and speed settings and a wider, gentler air flow. For deep hydration, the Act+Acre hair mask is a keeper—rich in castor oil and glycerin, and handsome to boot.

    Must-Have Makeup

There is something undeniably alluring about makeup this time of year, for those who play in that arena. It’s fun to dial up the mascara before a night out, to trot out a new lipstick. This Tom Ford matte lip in deep red brings the sophistication, all the better against fresh, luminous skin. Makeup artist Jillian Dempsey (who works with Kristen Stewart) is behind this cream blush, which comes in six shades for warm flush. La Bouche Rouge’s sustainability-minded shadow palette gives the effects of a Parisian smoky eye. (Spring for a leather case if you wish, but the red paper is equally smart.) And for a fluttery party lash, Kjaer Weis’s clean, volumizing formula amps things up.

    Timeless Perfumes

Some people adore being surprised with just the right scent—a tough act for a gift-giver, made easier by knowing where to look. Frédéric Malle’s jewel-box library of fragrances is something of a foolproof destination, with Musc Ravageur an enticing proposition: layers of amber, musk, and patchouli that Malle himself once likened to “Parisian nights at their wildest.” Ombré Leather, from Tom Ford, has the sophistication of fancy oxfords, overlaid with notes of vetiver and moss—perfect for the Succession devotee. D.S. & Durga’s Radio Bombay brings the crackling warmth of sandalwood, iris, and cedar, which reads equally interestingly in blazing summer and winter. For a mood lift? The Nue Co.’s Functional Fragrance draws on a university study that investigated neurological reactions to certain scent notes; the blend of green cardamom, palo santo, and violet is designed for a smell-good, feel-good effect.

    Home Scents

Call it nesting season or entertaining time—whatever the occasion, it’s eternally nice to have something pleasing in the air. For those with a taste for fun graphics and starch, there is D.S. & Durga’s limited-edition holiday candle, with cleverly pleasing notes of potato, black pepper, and peanut oil. The Cafe Society perfume gun—as Frédéric Malle’s room sprays are jauntily called—smells like the backdrop to a 19th-century novel, given the earthy notes of patchouli, amber, and lavender. The very giftable Costa Brazil candle is decidedly transporting, by way of Amazonian resins, vetiver, and other evocations of the rainforest. For the purists, the Vitruvi stone diffuser is an understated means of delivering essential oils into the ether, for good vibes that last into the new year.

  • The Essential Guide to Black Friday’s Beauty and Wellness Deals, All Cyber Week Long

The Essential Guide to Black Friday’s Beauty and Wellness Deals, All Cyber Week Long

    [ad_1]

The phrase Cyber Week means different things to different people. Some, with a laser-sharp eye for deals, have earmarked the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales that will net them the Dyson vacuum cleaner or LED face mask of their dreams. To others, the shopping bonanza is reason to run far, far away from any store or computer—too much of a good thing, no thanks. To both camps, I promise: This story is for you! A quick scroll through the worthwhile promotions collected here will cost little in time but offer much by way of potential problem-solvers. (Problems of the lowercase-P variety; consider donating to worthwhile nonprofits, such as the maternal-health organization Every Mother Counts, for the capital-P ones.)

Fellow allergy sufferers will find handsome air purifiers from Molekule—wise investments as the season’s viruses and dust bunnies float around. There is seriously good winter skin care from Augustinus Bader, Tatcha, and Tata Harper. For chapped lips that also want a slick of color, Glossier’s Ultralip provides, while Tower 28’s cream blush is a favorite pick-me-up for cheeks. You can stay warm with an infrared mat from HigherDose or a sleek GHD hair dryer; on the side of cool, leafy salads, there are discounted meal plans from Sakara, which serve as a treat to self during the holiday rush. You’ll also find Maude here, the sexual-wellness brand known for its understatedly elegant vibrators. As its co-creative director Dakota Johnson quipped by phone last year when the company’s anal plug launched, “Cone is a really good stocking stuffer!” So too is the new Spot, which targets internal pleasure points thought to be elusive.

Consider this roundup a way to ride above the Cyber Week mayhem—dipping in only where it’s pleasing. (Note: Prices here are typically pre-discount, as many of the sales depend on total spend.) It might help jumpstart your holiday shopping, as well as your self-care strategies for the new-and-improved year ahead.

    Tata Harper

An early innovator in the world of elevated, natural skin care, Tata Harper is known for high-tech formulas with a plant-powered approach. From November 21 through 23, orders over $100 earn a 25% discount; from November 24 through 29, there’s a blanket 25% off across the site. And if you spend $300, there are perks: a bonus Clean Dream Team kit is yours until November 26 (code: TATA300), and starting November 27, you get Tata’s Daily Essentials (300GIFT). The newcomer Superkind Refining Cleanser is one product to add to cart. It serves up light-handed exfoliation with the help of finely milled rice powder and cranberry enzymes. The limited-edition Calendula body oil bottles up summertime nourishment for winter skin, while the Nette collaboration candle is a forest-bathing shortcut.

    Nordstrom

The retailer, known for its mix of in-demand fashion labels, is equally clued in with its beauty edit, overseen by Autumne West. This year’s Cyber Week promotions got an early jump, with 20% off most Drybar tools, along with a 25% discount for NuFace’s cult microcurrent devices through Cyber Monday. There is makeup galore, from YSL lipsticks to brow essentials by Kosas. And the skin-care offerings run deep, with 50% off select Kiehl’s products and 25% off for all Mario Badescu (a Martha Stewart favorite). Plus, a 25% discount on Augustinus Bader means a Rich Cream in every mother’s stocking.

    Tower 28

Named after a Santa Monica lifeguard tower, this California beauty brand is known for its sunny colors and graphics, but an underlying commitment to clean, non-irritating ingredients has cemented its fan base. (Founder Amy Liu brings along her own experience with sensitive skin, which is why it’s the first makeup line to follow the National Eczema Association’s ingredient guidelines.) From Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, there’s a 20% deal on orders up to $49, with 28% off orders over $50. The BeachPlease cream blush is worth ordering in a handful of colors (truly a gem), and the new mascara—featherlight and buildable—is already a standout.

    Onda

Everything at this New York beauty and wellness destination, from the skin-care curation to the transporting facials, is the product of rigorous consideration. That makes this week’s promotion—a first-ever 25% off nearly everything—particularly welcome news. Now is the time to try Stripes, the new line from Onda partner Naomi Watts geared toward (peri)menopausal women, which includes this ultra-hydrating facial serum. Also under Naomi’s Picks: Priori’s lightweight LED mask, with 5% of sales benefitting One Simple Wish’s support for children in need.

    Soft Services

Leave it to this body-care startup to find a handsome, efficacious way to treat the less glamorous concerns, from bacne to flaky skin. This week’s deals (the kickoff date is to be announced, with promotions ending November 27) serve up a sitewide discount. Orders below $50 save 5%; the next tier, up to $99, saves 10%; the $100-149 tier earns 15% off; and orders above $150 enjoy a blanket 20% off. The brand’s buzzed-about Buffing Bar now comes in a limited-edition New Spice scent—perfect for dads who tend toward a certain classic aftershave. (The Soap Home makes a good resting place for it.) And the Carea Cream, with a healing dose of urea, is an every-day-post-shower winner, good for easing winter dryness as well as keratosis pilaris.

    Maude

This forward-thinking sexual-wellness brand, led by founder Éva Goicochea and co-creative director Dakota Johnson, abides by the idea that understated aesthetics belong in this arena. For its sophomore Black Friday sale—spanning Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25—the brand is offering a 20% discount on orders exceeding $80. (The code is BFCM2022.) Maude’s duo of vibrators (the original flutter-tip Vibe and the egg-shaped Drop) is a good place to start. Spot, a newcomer designed for targeted internal use, is another contender. On Saturday and Sunday, the line’s bath soaks and massage candles get the spotlight, with 15% off the Tubkit and Burn Trio sets (BATHANDBURN15). Cyber Monday brings a 15% discount on orders over $60 (CYBERMONDAY15). And on Giving Tuesday, each purchase of the Dakota-tested Sex Ed For All hat supports SIECUS’s work around sex education legislation.

    Bathing Culture

This San Francisco brand brings sunny vibes to the bathroom, with environmentally friendly shower goods wrapped in its colorful aesthetic. From November 22 through 28, there is a 20% discount across the site. It’s an excellent time to snag a gallon-size bottle of the organic Mind and Body Wash (to refill Bathing Culture’s groovy glass bottle), as well as the newly launched shampoo and conditioner, with a scent inspired by brisk ocean and shoreline landscapes. If you shop on Giving Tuesday, 50% of proceeds will benefit DigDeep, the Navajo Water Project’s fundraising effort to help Americans get access to the ultimate bathing essential.

Certain brands are excluded (Dyson, Chanel, and others), but you’ll hardly notice their absence. This is your chance to try (or rebuy) U Beauty’s Barrier Bioactive Treatment, which offers nighttime protection for moisture-sapped skin. And for those hearing the siren call of aughts-era straightened hair, this T3 flat iron—designed to preserve healthy strands—gets the job done.

This handsome Fellow electric kettle is every bit a wellness accessory in my book, paving the way for cups of good-for-you tea. (Naturopathic doctor Maria Geyman’s line, Masha Tea, is a favorite.) Also worth the splurge is Costa Brazil’s Aroma, an ode to the Amazon by way of resinous, woody notes softened with white flora.

    WTHN

The New York acupuncture studios aim to be a bridge between traditional Chinese medicine and a wellness crowd more accustomed to booking services online. That comes through in the sunny packaging for its herbal supplements, such as Daily Immune Support, a blend of astragalus and reishi that works to keep you hale and hearty. The ancient-meets-modern approach also comes through in its jewelry-like variations of ear seeds, the tiny adhesive dots that can be worn to gently stimulate acupressure points. Beginning November 21 through 28, all WTHN products are 25% off (excluding body cups and bundles), paving the way for a holiday unwind.

Through November 30, the brand is offering 25% off nearly sitewide, with an additional 9-piece gift for orders over $300. The Thermal Cleansing Balm—rich in calcium and magnesium, with sweet almond oil supplying vitamin E—is an inspired way to massage the day away. Sisley-Paris

Even for a luxury skin-care brand with an array of much-loved products, the Black Rose collection is a hero. It’s sensorial and ultra-nourishing; it’s also very chic. For its Cyber Week offering (available November 21 through November 26 at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus), Sisley has a Black Rose perk: If you buy either the line’s Skin Infusion cream or face oil, you receive a full-size Black Rose cream mask. Moon Juice

If adaptogens and healing mushrooms are now squarely in the mainstream, you can give some of that credit to Moon Juice’s Amanda Chantal Bacon, whose LA juice destinations gave her an early megaphone and paved the way for a full slate of pantry, supplement, and skin-care offerings. Beginning November 21 to 29, there’s 25% off across the site, along with a 30% discount for the first three months of a subscription plan. The stress-balancing SuperYou is one for the list: The two-a-day capsules feature adaptogens used in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, including ashwagandha, rhodiola, shatavari, and amla. And the Full Moon sampler pack of Moon Juice’s “dusts” let you uplevel a corner-store coffee with targeted herbs. Plus, if you shop on Giving Tuesday, 1% of every purchase supports Girls Inc., Surf Rider, Summaeverythang, or Sustainable Harvest—customer’s choice.

    Vacation

Probably the only SPF brand to come with a baked-in soundtrack (courtesy of the synth-heavy nostalgia of Poolsuite.fm), Vacation arrived in 2021 with a point of view: to provide “leisure-enhancing sunscreen” with 1980s joie de vivre. There are singular touches, like a signature scent for its original sun lotion, which gives whiffs of piña coladas, French tanning oil, and salty skin. This year’s Classic Whip is a flight of Spring Break fancy, with a textural riff on whipped cream. Beginning November 25 to 28, there’s a 20% discount site wide, along with daily perks.

    Ami Colé

Brooklyn-based founder Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye tapped her own Senegalese-American background as inspiration for Ami Colé, her clean makeup brand designed with women of color in mind. (The name is an homage to her mother.) Through November 28, there’s a 20% discount across the site, with the code HOLIDAY. The Light-Catching highlighter—its universal shade appropriately called Glaze—brings a dewy glint to winter complexions; the concealer, which launched earlier this year, is another effortless essential.

    Golde

Trinity Mouzon Wofford founded Golde with the idea that “self-care wasn’t always going to be something reserved for the wellness warrior,” as she once told VF. In the brand’s eye, that includes “Beauty Cocoa” spiced with functional mushrooms reishi and turkey tail, along with biotin and hyaluronic acid; ceremonial-grade matcha, paired with a whisk, offers a focused morning boost. Through November 28, there is a 20% discount across the site—perfect for host gifts or your own pantry supply.

    Golde Make Your Matcha Kit

    Dermstore

The online beauty emporium has a deep edit—and a full slate of tiered promotions this week, through November 28. Alongside brands like Rahua, Christophe Robin, and R+Co Bleu, the hair products by Paris-based stylist David Mallett are currently 25% off, including the latest shampoo and conditioner called Pure—perfect for the minimalist, down to its pristine formula and packaging. And the skin-care lineup runs from doctor-backed lines (Dr. Zenovia, particularly good for adult acne) to clean-minded ranges. Naturopathica is 30% off, which makes it a good time to stock up on a personal favorite: the Manuka Honey cleansing balm.

  • clean.io Launches Free ‘Coupon Detective’ Report for E-Commerce Merchants

clean.io Launches Free ‘Coupon Detective’ Report for E-Commerce Merchants

    [ad_1]

Unauthorized coupons cost merchants millions. The Coupon Detective tool, from the maker of cleanAD and cleanCART, provides detailed data on where coupons originate, usage level, and potential lost revenue.

    Press Release

    Nov 17, 2022 09:02 EST

clean.io, recently acquired by HUMAN Security and market leader in malvertising prevention serving some of the largest platforms and publishers in the ad ecosystem, has launched its new Coupon Detective solution, a free software tool that shows e-commerce merchants just how much money they are losing from these third-party sources.

Shoppers love coupons because they save money. Retailers love them because they bring in new shoppers and show how effective their marketing initiatives are. That is unless they are coupons being leaked by third-party extensions or deal sites, which can cost businesses one-third or more of their sales and disrupts marketing partnerships. clean.io offers merchants a solution.

By now, most shoppers know how coupons work when shopping on retailer websites. Consumers receive a code via email or another source, type it in at checkout and get a discount. The merchant gets a sale and often some insight or data points on how well, or not so well, its advertising or affiliate programs are reaching consumers.

More and more, though, online “deal sites” like retailmenot.com and third-party extensions like Honey are vacuuming up coupon codes by scraping them from consumers and giving them out to shoppers who weren’t intended to receive them. The discounts are then applied via browser extensions or deal sites.

For the retailer, it cuts into sales and eats up already slim profit margins. It also makes it impossible for the retailer to determine if its customer acquisition programs, like paid media or affiliate partnerships, actually work. And as a byproduct, retailers end up paying erroneous commissions or investing further in unsuccessful partnerships.

“E-commerce merchants are losing millions in potential revenue and misattributing consumer sales because of excessive and improper use of coupon codes through third parties like Honey, Capital One and RetailMeNot,” said Geoff Stupay, CEO of clean.io.

“This may seem like a minor issue, but for e-commerce merchants, this could mean losing between 10 to 20% margin on every sale, or lead to wasteful spending on promotions, campaigns and affiliate partnerships that are not as fruitful as they seem.”

clean.io is the developer of cleanCART, software that helps merchants block the injection of unauthorized coupon codes that are being used incorrectly, protecting revenue, advertising and affiliate relationships. However, according to Stupay, “Most merchants are unaware of the scope of the problem because identifying those unauthorized coupon injections is difficult, and tracking the lost revenue even harder.”

“Statistics show clean.io’s coupon injection solution, cleanCART, provides a 3% average increase in conversion rate and an average 1,452% increase in merchant ROI in the first 30 days and is guaranteed to pay for itself within 90 days,” Stupay adds.

That has led clean.io to launch the free Coupon Detective tool, a suite of analytics for free that shows merchants the coupon usage on their site, the source, how often they are used, and how much revenue is being lost.

“clean.io’s Coupon Detective report tells you, here’s the problem, this is why it’s bad, and proves it with statistics from your own checkout,” Stupay said. “The reason we are providing this report for free is because many merchants don’t even know how large of an issue it is. If we can raise awareness around the problem for free, we are helping these companies in a meaningful way, and we are well-positioned to help them solve the problem once they understand the potential impact on their business.”

    About clean.io

Founded in 2017, clean.io is a digital engagement security platform that provides businesses with the tools they need to protect their user experiences and brands by controlling the third-party code that executes on their websites. From helping some of the world’s largest online publishers to prevent malvertising, to giving e-commerce merchants the ability to block the injection of unwanted discount codes at checkout, clean.io’s mission is to ensure that brands truly own and control their most valuable digital assets – their websites. Scarce City, a bitcoin-focused marketplace, has launched a marketplace that sells anything in exchange for bitcoin known as SatsCrap, per a release sent to Bitcoin Magazine.

SatsCrap allows users to list or purchase products with bitcoin and thus maintain user privacy. Anyone with a device connected to the internet can list or purchase a product with no Know Your Customer (KYC) data collected. The marketplace does not use logins, bank accounts or a registration process.

“We’re already seeing strong listing and buying activity among our alpha community,” said Chris Tramount, CEP (chief executive pleb) of SatsCrap parent company Scarce City. “Sending a small amount of bitcoin as collateral is meaningfully easier than creating an account and linking a bank account.”

  • 11 Best Books to Gift Writers and Aspiring Authors

11 Best Books to Gift Writers and Aspiring Authors

    [ad_1]

So, you want to write a novel. There’s a book (or ten thousand) for that. Some are bland, and dull, and formulaic. The ones on this list are none of those things. Most are memoirs and essay collections that sneak craft advice in through the back door: there’s literary criticism and personal narrative and close reading, and along the way theories of tone and narrative sink in as though by osmosis. But even the theoretically straight craft books here do much more than serve up packaged plot structures; they’re as pleasurable to peruse as they are useful. They use published work as examples—Russian classics, contemporary poetry, slick crime thrillers—to nudge one into better reading and writing. (I have yet to find something more consistently inspiring than reading books so good they make me jealous.) Most are books to which I referred during the long, solitary slog of writing my own first novel, or ones I wish I’d had. There’s also one on the art of creative nonfiction, and one that tackles everything that comes after the actual writing of the manuscript. As one might say but should never write: variety is the spice of life.

Black Friday is still a few weeks away, but this season’s Sephora sale puts the retailer ahead of the curve. Once again, the Holiday Savings Event 2022 serves up serious beauty deals for those who are getting a jump on the gift list—or merely replenishing their vanity. For this sale, discounts apply nearly sitewide (find the exemptions here). You’ll find limited-edition makeup palettes, investment hair tools, and skin care worth their cult followings, as well as exclusive sets that have only just landed on the shelves.

Sign up for “The Buyline” to receive a curated list of fashion, books, and beauty buys right to your inbox.

The sale is staggered between October 28 and November 7, organized by the Beauty Insider tiers. The first three days are exclusive to Rouge members (those who spend $1,000 per year), who can stock up at a 20% discount. VIB members, who spend an annual $350, can enjoy 15% off beginning November 1. Finally, those in the Insider tier—which has no threshold and is free to join—have a 10% discount that kicks off November 3. The code SAVINGS at checkout is the magic word. Perhaps best of all, everyone enjoys free shipping, regardless of their Beauty Insider status.

The glories of a sitewide sale are obvious, but the reality is that parsing through the huge inventory can feel overwhelming. Consider this curated selection a satisfying place to start.

ICAIE Applauds Global Financial Integrity (GFI) in New Report on China’s Role in Transnational Crime and Illicit Trade

    [ad_1]

According to ICAIE, China Inc. has leveraged corruption, illicit markets, and predatory trade and lending practices to become the world’s biggest transnational illicit trade syndicate across global markets, supply chains, and online marketplaces, and to finance its economy and military, enhancing prosperity and anchoring stability for the ruling CCP regime.

    Press Release

    Oct 27, 2022

David M. Luna, Executive Director of the International Coalition Against Illicit Economies (ICAIE), applauds the new report by Global Financial Integrity (GFI), “Made in China: China’s Role in Transnational Crime & Illicit Financial Flows”, which analyzes the growing illegal trade and corruptive influence by China Inc. – China’s network of state-owned enterprises and criminal triads – across markets globally.

“Corruption and illicit trade are among the enabling drivers of China’s national aspirations to global economic power, its aggressive foreign policy, and great power competition strategies. China’s illicit trade facilitates a convergence of crimes that spawns bigger destabilizing threats across the international community,” said Luna.

The state-sponsored corruption exported through its strident foreign policy is sanctioned at the top level of government through China’s state-owned enterprises or external economic development initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative.” David M. Luna

China’s role in diverse forms of illicit trade and dark commerce today includes the trafficking of illegal fentanyl and precursors, humans, counterfeits, endangered wildlife, and other contraband, as well as money laundering across black markets and the digital world, as the report finds.

As detailed in the new GFI report, “China today is helping fuel the multi-trillion-dollar global illegal economy. China is benefitting financially through the illicit manufacturing and unauthorized exporting of harmful products such as the chemical precursors to make deadly fentanyl and other opioids, fake goods that can cause great bodily harm or death, and through its international role in laundering dirty money from all corners of the globe,” said Luna.

“Illicit activities such as the illegal fentanyl trade not only harms our people – killing tens of thousands of Americans each year – it becomes a threat multiplier. It enables Mexican cartels to earn tens of billions of dollars a year in dirty money, some of which is laundered in China, and the financing enables the cartels to infiltrate the Mexican government,” added Luna.

The GFI report also finds that another harm to global security is driven from China’s illegal trade and unregulated economy and the flooding of counterfeits – oftentimes dangerous and toxic fake products – into U.S. markets and online marketplaces. According to estimates in the report, China accounts for up to 80% of all counterfeits in the global marketplace (OECD: $500 billion/year).

ICAIE encourages the United States and international community to confront and constructively engage China to be a more responsible global leader and market citizen in addressing a multitude of the illicit threats that harm U.S. national security and the collective security of all nations.

As Recessionary Clouds Darken and Inflation Remains High, 3PLs Look to Optimize Efficiencies to Drive Profitability

    Press Release

    Oct 27, 2022 07:00 PDT

Extensiv (formerly 3PL Central) — delivering omnichannel software solutions for warehouse, inventory, and order management — today announced the results of the Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report. This is the third annual and industry’s only benchmark report focused exclusively on the 3PL warehouse industry. This year’s report highlighted the success 3PLs performing omnichannel fulfillment saw related to order volume and profitability growth as compared to other 3PLs.

The Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report aggregates data from more than 200 3PL warehouses and provides insight on more than 30 industry-specific topics. The report builds on prior data and provides year-over-year changes and trends to help warehouses understand market growth opportunities and challenges facing the industry.

Key takeaways from the 2022 report include:

    • An increasing number of 3PLs grew volume and profitability: 3PLs fared even better than in past years, despite concerns about inflation, more significant labor constraints, and global uncertainty. 91% of 3PLs grew order volumes in 2022, up from 85% the year prior. 81% claimed higher profits this year, a slight increase from 79% last year.
    • Omnichannel strategies drove faster growth: 18% of 3PLs performing omnichannel fulfillment saw a 50% increase in profitability over the prior year, which is 33% more than the average of other 3PLs.
    • Successful 3PLs started to focus: This year, many 3PLs found success focusing on their strengths. For example, more 3PLs specialized in specific industries, with 3PL warehouses serving 2.9 industries — down from 3.5 industries last year.
    • Labor shortage compounded by increasing labor costs: 48% cite finding and retaining workers as a top business challenge that was also magnified by 79% of 3PLs stating that their labor costs increased in 2022.
    • Connectivity-led 3PL technology investments: EDI (51%), shopping cart (48%), and marketplace (25%) integrations showed major jumps from prior years as top technology integrated with warehouse management systems (WMS)
    • More than half of 3PLs fulfill orders in less than 90 minutes: To meet growing customer expectations, 60% of 3PLs fulfill orders less than 90 minutes after receipt, up from 53% last year. Further, the speed of order fulfillment is linked closely with annual order volume growth. Nearly a third fulfill orders in less than 30 minutes, up from 22% last year.
    • 3PLs focusing on functionalities that drive profitability: The top functionalities respondents plan on implementing in the coming year include billing and invoicing (32%) and mobile barcode scanning (27%). Top priorities include acquiring new customers, e-commerce growth, and automating processes.

Other key areas of the report include trends and key metrics related to growth opportunities, profitability, labor shortages, warehouse space limitations, technology integrations, and success measurements, among others. Although this year brought growing concerns around inflation, a recession, more significant labor constraints, and global uncertainty, 3PLs remain optimistic about the coming year.

“3PLs spent significant time integrating shopping carts and marketplaces to optimize their businesses in 2022, and connectivity is a theme that will continue into 2023. We found it interesting that 3PLs generally remain optimistic as they continue in an uncertain economic environment,” said Rachel Trindade, chief marketing officer at Extensiv. “Fifty-three percent (53%) of 3PLs are concerned about managing costs next year and 25% are concerned about inflation. They plan to face economic headwinds by finding greater efficiencies. With the Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report, the core insights provide 3PLs with access to industry benchmarks for planning and implementing best practices to support order and profitability growth in 2023.”

  • The Key Benefits of Using Shopify

The Key Benefits of Using Shopify

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Shopify has been changing the game of ecommerce for more than 15 years, and its benefits and ease of integration make it an easy, common-sense solution for many businesses.

A global phenomenon, Shopify is now used in almost 200 different countries by close to two million different websites. Why does your business need Shopify? In this era of global commerce driven by the internet, Shopify can be a simple solution to complex logistical problems, and there are many tangible benefits to go along with its seamless integration.

Not only does the product give companies the ability to simplify merchandising and the online checkout process, but Shopify can also assist with marketing and customer engagement.

What are Shopify’s most important features?

Shopify is one of the easiest ways to launch an online business while allowing room (and functionality) for growth. Why start with a commerce platform that won’t be able to meet a company’s needs when it achieves large success? Many of Shopify’s largest accounts started with a smaller commerce host and had to move over to Shopify when they outgrew their previous platform.

Shopify allows you to create a professional-looking ecommerce solution with every feature and functionality an entrepreneur could want. It can be extremely costly and time-consuming to create an ecommerce website from scratch — Shopify is the logical solution.

Users choose from a library of free, customizable templates to bring their website design and store to life. Marketing, payments and security are all taken care of by the platform, leaving the user to focus on what they do best — bring ideas to life and grow their business.

    Making money with Shopify

It takes many businesses months, even years, to create a profitable online merchandising solution. Creating an online business is a full-time job in itself; Shopify is a way to ease this burden and start making money faster. Shopify also has a network of experts available to their users who can help you get started and zero in on possible customers.

According to data in Entrepreneur‘s new book on Shopify, online customers currently make up 18% of the world’s retail sales. That number is expected to rise to 22% of global sales by the end of 2023. If you’re not already taking advantage of internet sales, now is the time to get started, and Shopify is the platform that will help you become successful.

    How much does Shopify cost?

Shopify offers three pricing tiers for business owners. There is a basic tier ($29/month), a Shopify tier ($79/month) and an advanced tier ($299/month). Additionally, Shopify gives users the ability to pay for a full year of service upfront, saving users up to 50% off of these three plans. Benefits will increase with each subsequent tier (such as more customizable and complex reporting data, more staff accounts, more inventory locations and greater shipping discounts), and a user’s credit card price-per-transaction fee will also decrease as business owners move up the subscription tiers.

It’s also worth noting that Shopify does not charge a setup fee on any of its plans.

Shopify offers a more scalable solution for entrepreneurs

There are numerous stories of business owners who started on smaller-scale business solution sites such as Etsy and who needed more and moved on to Shopify for a more customizable and scalable solution. One such business owner, Kristin Berry Mastoras, is profiled in Entrepreneur‘s new book on Shopify. One of the most common reasons that entrepreneurs move to the Shopify platform is that the competition doesn’t offer the same functionality as Shopify.

“After trying several different ecommerce platforms, I did not realize just how customizable a Shopify-based ecommerce website can be, especially when you hire a programmer to alter a theme,” Berry Mastoras says. “Shopify is a set of tools for building your own thing, and it’s currently used by some of the biggest companies in the world, so it’s extremely scalable.”

    Shopify vs. Amazon

It is important to be able to deliver a fast, efficient order-to-doorstep experience. There’s no denying that Amazon changed the way ecommerce works with Amazon Prime, allowing two-day shipping (or faster) to its members. So what are the advantages of using Shopify versus selling on Amazon?

First of all, it is possible to use both. Shopify has a fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) integration that allows users to stock their products at an Amazon fulfillment center. In short, this isn’t an either/or proposition; Shopify allows its users to have the convenience of Amazon integrated into their ecommerce store while also giving them the freedom to go beyond Amazon. The same isn’t true if you host your store exclusively at Amazon, as you might have to manage your Amazon listings and ecommerce website’s listings from two separate entities if you aren’t using the Shopify platform for your non-Amazon entities.
