    RECIPE VARIATIONS

    • Mushrooms are a wonderful addition to this dish. Just add a small can of mushrooms when you add the soup to the skillet.
    • Looking for a lower carb option? You could easily use cauliflower rice. You would probably need to leave the water out, since cauliflower rice has more moisture.
    • Use ground turkey or ground chicken! Since both have a lower fat content, you may need to add a little olive oil to the skillet when you are browning.
    • Add salt and pepper to taste, we leave the salt out, since the soup has a higher salt content.
    • Mozerella or Provolone cheese would be a great addition. Just add it when you remove it from the oven.

    DEVILED EGGS-The Southern Lady Cooks

    [ad_1]

This Deviled Eggs Recipe is one of our favorites and it’s also very versatile. We love to add to it, or just serve it the way it’s written.

    Deviled Eggs RecipeDeviled Eggs Recipe

If you love deviled eggs, you MUST try these delicious Pimento Cheese Deviled Eggs. My family loves them and they have wonderful reviews.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

We love how versatile this recipe is and you an add what you love to it. We added bacon bits to these and a little greenery but you don’t have to. This is a great basic recipe for deviled eggs. Some people love to add a green olive to them, it’s all a personal choice, but this is a wonderful base recipe.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Eggs
    • Sweet pickle relish
    • Mayonnaise
    • Yellow mustard
    • Pepper
    • Salt
    • Sugar
    • Paprika (To sprinkle on top)

    SWAPS

If you love dill instead of sweet relish, then, by all means, switch that out. Add bacon to the top, an olive, use a different mustard (honey mustard is great), you can easily make this recipe your own.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

These are not hard to make and the longest part of the process is boiling the eggs and peeling them.

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
Contrary to what many people say, I think adding the eggs to boiling, salted water, makes them easier to peel. Always have eggs at room temperature before boiling!  Bring salted water (add about 1 tablespoon salt to water before boiling)  to a boil and add eggs. I use a soup ladle to lower the uncooked eggs gently into the boiling water. Boil eggs on medium heat and boil one minute per egg.  A dozen eggs takes twelve minutes boiling time.  Remove pot from stove and put under running cold water. Peel immediately holding the egg under the cold water for smooth, peeled eggs.

    Step 2
Once peeled, slice the eggs lengthwise and scoop out the center yolks.  In a bowl combine egg yolks with ingredients and mash with a fork.  Spoon filling into halves.  Sprinkle eggs with paprika. Add bacon bits and parsley if you desire.

    Deviled Eggs RecipeDeviled Eggs Recipe

    ⭐TIP

If you are not a fan of vinegar, you can easily use pickle juice. We like to really fill our eggs with the mixture as you can see! You can use less in each egg if you like.

    SERVE THIS WITH

Deviled Eggs are a classic side dish and are served at most holidays! We love them for Easter and you may want to check out these wonderful Easter Recipes.

    RECIPE VARIATIONS

If you are a fan of Deviled Eggs, you will also love these delicious recipes:

    • Deviled Egg Macaroni Salad – This dish is always a hit and wonderful for any potluck! Video included with this recipe.
    • Egg Salad – This is always a great way to enjoy eggs, and super versatile! Add this to your menu list. Great for a sandwich or on Ritz crackers.
    • Instant Pot Boiled Eggs – Quick way on how to make eggs in the instant pot!

    ❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can you make these in advance?

Yes, but we find it best to boil the eggs and then make the deviled eggs the day of.

    Why do you use vinegar?

It gives a little bit of acid to the mixture and balances the flavor.

    STORING

Best to store in a single layer or in an designated egg carrier. Sometimes the eggs will sweat, so you can put a paper towel on the bottom.

    Fried Potato Cakes

These potato cakes are a wonderful appetizer. Great way to enjoy leftover mashed potatoes.

    Dill Pickle Cheese Ball

LIMA BEANS WITH HAM OVER RICE – (BUTTER BEANS)

    [ad_1]

Lima Beans, also known as Butter Beans, are delicious. This easy dish is comfort food at its best and a fantastic way to enjoy a hearty meal.

Lima Beans and Ham - Butter BeansLima Beans and Ham - Butter Beans

If you love this hearty dish, you will also love this delicious Pork Roast and White Beans. It’s one of our most popular crock pot dishes. Of course both require cornbread!

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

We love easy recipes with lots of taste and won’t keep you in the kitchen for hours. This is one of those recipes, and it’s budget-friendly too. This Butter Bean recipe is perfect on a cold day and it reheats well too. This recipe can be made in the crock pot too!

ARE LIMA BEANS AND BUTTER BEANS THE SAME?

Yes, they are the same bean, but they are sometimes picked at different stages of maturity. They also go by different names depending on the region. In the South, they are known more as Butter Beans. (source)

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Bag of large dried lima beans
    • Ham hock with some meat still on the bone or 1 cup chopped ham of your choice
    • Onion, chopped
    • Minced garlic
    • Pepper
    • Salt
    • 2 – 4  cups rice, cooked according to package directions depending on how many people you are serving (See Tip Section)

    SWAPS

You could always use bacon as the meat source and add other seasonings your family likes. You can just eat these as soup beans and not serve them over rice, that is your decision.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

This dish is very easy to make, the longest part of the process is soaking the beans, which we do overnight.

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
Rinse and sort beans and soak them overnight in a large pot of water. Next morning, drain the water and rinse the beans.

    Step 2
Add six cups of fresh water, the chopped onion, garlic,  pepper, and ham or ham hock.  Simmer beans with lid tilted on pot for about 3 hours until tender, then add salt. (I always salt dried beans after they are done. They take longer to cook if you salt them during the cooking process.)   If using a ham hock, remove it from pot and take the ham from the bone and add back to the beans. Serve over rice.

    Step 3 – Crock Pot
These beans can be cooked in the crock pot as well.  Cook on high for 4 hours or low for about seven hours until tender.

Lima Beans and Ham - Butter BeansLima Beans and Ham - Butter Beans

    ⭐TIP

When making rice, 1 cup of uncooked rice, will make 2 cups cooked. So remember that when making rice for this dish. If you want 2 cups of cooked rice for this dish, then you will only need to make 1 cup of rice.

RECIPE VARIATIONS – SOUTHERN BUTTER BEANS

    • You can add different seasonings if you are a fan of heat, then add some Cajun seasoning to the pot. Here is our recipe for cajun seasoning.
    • You can use any meat you like: bacon, smoked sausage, andouille sausage (for spice)
    • You could also add in some vegetables to make it more soup/stew like. Celery is always a good addition or carrots, etc.
    • You could also cook the beans in broth, beef or chicken for added flavor.

    SERVE THIS WITH

    ❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you rinse the beans in hot or cold water?

You rinse them in cold water.

How do you know when the beans are done?

Some people like their beans really cooked and others like them with less mush. It’s really up to you to find what you like best.

    STORING AND REHEATING

We store these in a big pot in the fridge and reheat on the stove. If we made them in the crock pot, we just put them back on low until they are warm.

    SERVING SIZE

This makes around 8 servings and you can always stretch this meal with the rice.

  • MANDARIN ORANGE SALAD

    MANDARIN ORANGE SALAD

    [ad_1]

This Mandarin Orange Salad is a wonderful addition to any holiday or potluck. It’s so easy to make and everyone loves it. Super versatile!

    Mandarin Orange SaladMandarin Orange Salad

If you love mandarin oranges, you need to try this Mandarin Orange Cake. It’s one of our most popular and it’s a classic for a reason! It’s perfect for any gathering and always a hit!

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

I love how pretty this mandarin orange salad is and how good it looks on a buffet table in a pretty bowl.  You can just about add any fruit and make it your own.  It keeps for several days in the refrigerator.  You could double the recipe for a large crowd.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Cool whip
    • Vanilla instant pudding, dry (do not make the pudding add the dry mix)
    • Mandarin oranges, drained
    • Crushed pineapple, undrained
    • Miniature marshmallows
    • Coconut
    • Chopped green or red seedless grapes
    • Chopped maraschino cherries

    SWAPS

This mandarin orange salad is very versatile. You can swap out any fruit in this dish and leave it out if you don’t like it. If you are not a fan of coconut, leave it out! Use only mandarin oranges and the pudding mix, whipped topping and marshmallows. Make it your own!

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

The hardest part about this recipe is getting out the ingredients!

    COOKING STEPS

Mix together the cool whip and dry vanilla instant pudding with a spoon.  Fold in the rest of the fruit and mix with a spoon.  You may want to leave out some of the fruit to decorate the top of your salad. Makes 6 cups.

    ⭐TIP

Be sure to drain the mandarin oranges; they come in a lot of liquid, and that would be too much for this salad. The crushed pineapple doesn’t so it’s okay, BUT if you use chopped pineapple or a fruit in a lot of liquid you want to drain it.

APPLE BISCUITS – The Southern Lady Cooks -Delicious with Honey

    [ad_1]

These apple biscuits are so easy to make, and adding cheese is lovely! Great right out of the oven with butter and honey!

    Cheese Apple BiscuitsCheese Apple Biscuits

If you have never tried cheese and apples together, you need to, it’s a delicious combination. This Cheesy Apple Casserole is one of our favorite side dishes. Everyone who has tried it loves it and it has great reviews.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

We love to start our day with biscuits, and if you have followed us for any amount of time, you know that biscuits are one of our favorites. These were a great addition, they are easy to make and a wonderful way to enjoy apples!

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • All-purpose flour
    • Baking powder
    • Baking soda
    • Salt
    • Sugar
    • Butter
    • Egg
    • Buttermilk
    • Apples, peeled and grated
    • Shredded cheese of your choice (I used cheddar)

    SWAPS

You can switch out the cheese or leave it out altogether. You could use milk to make these biscuits but we do like the buttermilk, it has a better fat content for making biscuits.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

These biscuits are easy to make; if you are new to making biscuits, the flour will always vary. All flour is made differently so you may need to add more to reach your desired consistency.

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar.  Cut the butter into the flour until it resembles crumbs.

    Step 2
Add egg and buttermilk mixing with a spoon.  Fold in grated apples and cheese.

    Step 3
Pour dough out onto a floured surface.  Pat to about 1/4 to 1/2 inches thick. (I just use my hands and pat the dough out.)  Cut with biscuit cutter into rounds.

    Step 4
Place on a sprayed baking sheet and bake in a preheated 400-degree oven for about 15 minutes until brown on top.

    ⭐TIP

When making biscuits, please remember that all flours are different. Flour comes from different regions, and it’s always going to be dependent on how much you use and the way the flour is made. So if a recipe calls for 2 cups, you may need 2.5 or even 3. You must add flour until the dough is the consistency you need to make the biscuits.

    RECIPE VARIATIONS

We love biscuits and some of our most popular are:

     SERVE THIS WITH

We love these biscuits with butter and honey. The honey is wonderful with the apples and the cheese. These are wonderful with eggs and bacon.

We are big fans of the delicious red apples, but any kind will work.

Do you grate the cheese yourself?

Yes, we do, but you don’t have too.

    STORING AND REHEATING

    COCONUT BREAD

    [ad_1]

This Coconut Bread is so easy to make, doesn’t need yeast, and has a wonderful flavor. Moist and delicious! If you love coconut this bread is a must try!

    Coconut BreadCoconut Bread

If you love coconut as much as we do, then you will definitely want to try this Pineapple Coconut Loaf. It’s one of our most popular recipes!

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

This bread has a wonderful flavor and it’s easy to make. It’s a quick bread so you just throw it all together and bake. It would be the perfect addition to any breakfast or brunch but could also be a dessert. I goes great with coffee!

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • All-purpose flour
    • Salt
    • Baking powder
    • Baking soda
    • White granulated sugar
    • Eggs
    • Butter
    • Coconut extract (could use vanilla extract)
    • Buttermilk
    • Sweetened flake coconut

    SWAPS

You could use unsweetened coconut if you want to, we just like the sweetened version. I think this recipe would also work fine with regular milk, but the buttermilk really makes it moist.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

So easy to make and not a lot of ingredients! This coconut bread is a definite winner!

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
Whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda and set aside.  Cream sugar, butter and eggs in a mixing bowl.

    Step 2
Pour in flour mixture along with buttermilk and coconut extract and continue mixing until all ingredients are wet.  Fold in coconut.

    Step 3
Spray a 9 x 5 loaf pan with cooking spray and bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes until center tests done. I top the bread with a little extra coconut before I put it in the oven.

    Coconut BreadCoconut Bread

    ⭐TIP

Don’t over-mix the bread; it can cause it to dry out during the cooking process. You can also use parchment paper instead of cooking spray in your pan if you prefer.

You can also toast the coconut if you prefer, here is how we toast coconut.

    RECIPE VARIATIONS

If you have followed our site for any amount of time you know that we love coconut. Here are a few more recipes that include coconut:

    ❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you prefer sweetened or unsweetened coconut?

We prefer sweetened, but you can use whichever you like.

Can you replace the buttermilk with coconut milk?

We have never made it that way, but you can try it. The buttermilk adds a certain fat content to the recipe, so it will change it some.

    STORING

We store this bread in an airtight container and it will keep for a few days. You can freeze quick breads for around 3 months.

    Sour Cream Bread

This bread is easy to make and has a wonderful texture. Crust on top and soft center.

  • SOUTHERN SHRIMP AND GRITS

    SOUTHERN SHRIMP AND GRITS

    [ad_1]

Shrimp and Grits is a classic Southern dish full of flavor. Creamy grits, topped with delicious sauteed shrimp and topped with bacon. You can’t go wrong with this dish!

    Shrimp and GritsShrimp and Grits

If you love this classic dish of Shrimp and Grits, you will also love this Southern Red Rice. It’s a classic from Charleston and absolutely delicious.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

This dish is loaded in flavor but doesn’t take hours, which is always a huge plus. This dish was primarily a breakfast dish for a long time, but many people now enjoy it for dinner. So many things we love bout this dish but the flavor is wonderful and the grits are creamy. This dish is a Southern favorite and has been around a long time for a reason.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Bacon
    • Medium or large shrimp peeled and deveined
    • Bacon drippings
    • Butter
    • Green onion
    • Green pepper
    • Celery
    • Garlic
    • Cajun seasoning (check out our recipe to make your own Cajun seasoning)
    • Black pepper
    • Hot sauce or pinch cayenne
    • Grits:
    • Milk (can use whole or 2 per cent)
    • Butter
    • Salt
    • Old-fashioned grits – NOT instant
    • Sharp cheddar cheese
    • Salt and Pepper to taste

    SWAPS

You can switch out the cheese to different flavors if you like, but the sharp cheddar gives it a good taste. Some people don’t like celery, so leave it out if you like. You can use turkey bacon if you want a lower-fat dish, but the pork bacon, cooked to a crisp, is our favorite.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

This dish is very easy to make, and you can make the grits while you cook the shrimp!

    PREPARATIONS

Organize all of your ingredients makes it much easier.

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
Cook the bacon, remove from pan and set aside.  Combine two tablespoons bacon drippings, 1 tablespoon butter, green onion, green pepper, celery, garlic, Cajun seasoning, and black pepper in a skillet and cook until vegetables are tender.  About 8 to 10 minutes.  Add shrimp and hot sauce or cayenne and cook about four more minutes until shrimp are done.  Set aside and prepare grits

    Step 2
Put milk, butter and salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Using a whisk and stirring constantly add the grits a little at a time.  This keeps the grits from clumping.  Lower the heat, cover and cook five to six minutes or until grits thicken.  Remove from heat and gradually stir in cheddar cheese.  Stir until cheese melts.

    HOW TO PLATE

Put several spoonfuls of grits in a bowl and layer some shrimp mixture over the top.  Crumble bacon on top of the shrimp and garnish with chopped green onions.

    Shrimp and GritsShrimp and Grits

    ⭐TIP

If grits get too thick you can always add a little water to thin them, but we actually like them to have a little thicker consistency. It’s all about what your family likes.

We also use Old Fashioned Grits, not instant. The Old Fashioned Grits is the way to go in this recipe.

You may also love these Garlic Cheese Grits, this recipe is wonderful.

Go for the larger shrimp when making this dish. We also like good bacon; it’s just worth it to splurge a little and get great ingredients for this classic.

    OTHER SHRIMP DISHES

If you love to cook with shrimp, check out these other delicious dishes your family will love!

    ❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you serve shrimp and grits for breakfast or dinner?

We serve it for both! It’s a wonderful brunch dish too.

Do you use large or small shrimp?

Either, but we suggest getting the larger shrimp.

    STORING AND REHEATING

We store this in an airtight container and just reheat in the microwave.

    SERVING SIZE

This is about 4-6 servings, depending on how big of a plate you serve. You can easily double this recipe for a larger group.

    Coconut Macaroons-The Southern Lady Cooks-Only 3 Ingredients

    [ad_1]

These super easy coconut macaroons are so good and a great addition to any gathering. Perfect for afternoon coffee or tea.

3- Ingredient Coconut Macaroons3- Ingredient Coconut Macaroons

If you love easy and delicious recipes, you will want to check out these delicious Southern Pecan Pralines. They are a classic for a reason and go great with these coconut macaroons. Only a few ingredients and easy to make.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

This recipe is only three ingredients and takes about 15 minutes to put together, so that is a huge plus. These macaroons are delicious and only take about 10-12 minutes to bake, so you have a great little treat in around 30 minutes. Easy recipes are always a plus and not everything in the kitchen should take a long time or be hard.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Sweetened Shredded Coconut
    • Sweetened Condensed Milk
    • Vanilla Extract
    • Toppings (optional)

    SWAPS

The one thing you could swap out in this recipe is different extracts. I think almonds go great with coconuts, so that would be a great swap. You can also add what you like on the top, one addition could be chocolate chips if you want some chocolate with the coconut.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

These could be more simple to make, but they are a little messy!

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
Combine coconut flakes, vanilla extract and condensed milk in a large bowl.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    Step 2
Use either an ice cream scoop or your hands to roll into a walnut size (walnut out of the shell) ball and pat down a little and place on lined baking sheet. Place a pecan or half a cherry on the top or whatever you wish to use as a topping.

    Step 3
Bake in preheated 350-degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are browned.  Remove from baking sheet immediately when you take them out of the oven and let cool.  Makes about 2 1/2 dozen macaroons.

3- Ingredient Coconut Macaroons3- Ingredient Coconut Macaroons

    ⭐TIP

If you are rolling these out with your hands, I always spray a little cooking spray on my hands to keep them from sticking as badly. We also think these are wonderful cold, so once they cool, we pop them in the fridge, which helps them to cool down and they seem to hold the ball shape well too.

This is a custard pie, not a cream pie. Many people will confuse the two but a custard pie isn’t ‘creamy’ like a cream pie. It is thicker and has a very different texture.

  • THUMBPRINT COOKIES

    THUMBPRINT COOKIES

    [ad_1]

These classic thumbprint cookies are a wonderful treat during the holiday season, for afternoon coffee or tea, or when you want to make a great cookie.

    Thumbprint CookiesThumbprint Cookies

If you love these cookies, definitely check out our Classic Sugar Cookies. They are a wonderful Christmas cookie and so fun to decorate during the holiday season.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

These thumbprint cookies are delicious sugar cookies, rolled in sugar (which you can leave off) and then your favorite jam in the center. They have a wonderful taste and I don’t think they are “overly” sweet. They have the perfect amount of sweetness and are great for Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, etc.

We love to add these cookies with all of our other Christmas cookies into decorative tins to give to our neighbors for Christmas. These make a wonderful gift.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Powdered sugar
    • Butter, softened
    • Egg
    • Vanilla extract
    • Almond extract
    • Salt
    • All-purpose flour
    • White granulated sugar
    • Jams, preserves or jellies.

    SWAPS

You could switch out the extract in this recipe and use coconut, maple, etc. Use whatever you think will be a great flavor with the jam you choose.

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

The longest step in making these cookies is chilling the dough for 30 minutes. You want the fat to harden in the dough, so you can’t skip that step.

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
Mix powdered sugar, butter, egg, vanilla extract, almond extract and salt with mixer.  Fold in flour with a spoon and make ingredients into a large ball.  Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

    Step 2
Pinch off pieces of dough roll into small balls with your hands. I pinch off about a tablespoon of dough for each cookie. Have the 1/3 cup of granulated sugar in a bowl. Roll the balls in the sugar and place on a baking sheet.

    Step 3
I use the end of a wooden spoon to make a hole in the middle of the cookie balls.  You can use your thumb or whatever works for you.  Add your favorite jams, preserves or jellies to the center hole in each cookie.  Bake in a 325-degree preheated oven for 15 minutes.

Note: I used blackberry jam and apricot preserves in this recipe. Makes about 2 dozen cookies depending on the size you make them. You can use one and one-half teaspoons of vanilla extract in the recipe if you don’t have the almond extract.

    ⭐TIP

If the dough gets warm and to hard to work with, just put it back into the refrigerator for a bit. If your dough is sticky, you need to add more flour to work with it.

    SERVE THIS WITH

If you’re making these for a gathering, you may want to add these delicious Tea Cakes. They do great with these cookies, especially for a bridal shower. You can also add these delicious old-fashioned molasses cookies. They are always a hit!

    ❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Why did my cookies spread?

Likely the fat content in the cookies (the butter) got to warm. The dough should be chilled and not allowed to get overly warm.

Can you make these using any type of jam?

Yes, we love using all kinds, and it’s also makes for a beautiful platter of cookies.

    STORING

We store them in an airtight container and they keep very well.
