    Artemis II is preparing for launch from the Kennedy Space Center, where the rocket will carry the Orion spacecraft for a second time, this time with a crew on its journey to the moon.

    The first launch window opens from Feb. 6-11. If it does not launch in February, there will be another window open in March, and again in April if necessary.

    The mission aims to test the spacecraft’s systems with astronauts aboard before future lunar landings. The 10-day flight aims to help confirm systems and hardware NASA needs for early human lunar exploration missions.

    According to NASA, four astronauts will venture around the moon on Artemis II, paving the way for a return to the Moon and eventually Mars.

    The hope is to establish a long-term presence for future exploration and science through the Artemis Program. The science conducted in space is expected to drive progress in medicine and technology on Earth.

    As the mission prepares for launch, the crawler transporter moved the Artemis II rocker from the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 17, bringing it to launch pad 39-B.

  • The Earth keeps getting hotter, and Americans’ trust in science is on a down trend

    As global officials confirm that 2025 was Earth’s third-hottest year on record, a new poll shows Americans are sharply divided over the role of science in the United States.

    A report published Thursday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that a majority of Americans want the U.S. to be a world leader in science, but Republicans and Democrats disagree on whether it is.

    About two-thirds of Democrats, 65%, fear the U.S. is losing ground to other countries when it comes to scientific achievement — a 28-point increase since 2023, the poll found. Republicans have moved in the opposite direction, with far fewer saying the U.S. is losing ground than in the past, 32%, a 12-point decrease in that same time frame.

    The divide mirrors “other partisan differences in attitudes around science we have been tracking for years,” the Pew report says. “In particular, partisan differences in trust in scientists and the value of science for society are far wider than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic. Republicans have become less confident in scientists and less likely to say science has had a mostly positive effect on society, while Democratic views are largely unchanged.”

    The report notes that the Trump administration has reshaped federal science policy, including eliminating research grants, cutting science and health workforces, and shifting priorities away from climate change research. Last month, the administration dismantled one of the world’s leading climate and weather research institutions, the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

    About 90% of Democrats say they have at least a fair amount of confidence in scientists, but only 65% of Republicans said the same, according to the poll, which surveyed 5,111 U.S. adults in October. The gap in confidence between both parties on this point has been broadly similar in every survey since 2021.

    Experts said the findings are not particularly surprising.

    “It’s part of a larger trend toward the politicization of science,” said Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, citing issues such as vaccines and climate change. He said concerns about “falling behind” may be warranted as “the U.S. is very much doubling down on being a ‘petro state’ — exporting our oil and gas — whereas other parts of the world, particularly China, are doubling down on exporting clean energy technologies like wind, solar and batteries.”

    The report lands as the world continues to head in the wrong direction when it comes to global warming.

    On Wednesday, eight international groups released data confirming that 2025 was Earth’s third-hottest year on record — nearly tied with 2023 and just behind 2024, the warmest year on record. The groups include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NASA, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.

    The past 11 years have been the 11 warmest on record, according to Copernicus.

    Last year’s global average temperature was about 2.65 degrees above pre-industrial levels, the baseline against which global warming is measured. That means it was just shy of the 2.7 degree limit (1.5 degrees Celsius) established under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, an internationally recognized tipping point for the worst effects of climate change.

    “The news is not encouraging, and the urgency of climate action has never been more important,” Mauro Facchini, head of Earth observation at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Defense Industry and Space, told reporters this week.

    Yet Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris agreement on his first day back in office, a move he also made during his first term as president. This month, he also withdrew the U.S. from 66 other international organizations and treaties, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, from which the Paris agreement stems.

    The world is now on track to breach the Paris agreement’s limit for long-term global warming before the end of the decade — several years earlier than predicted, according to Hausfather, who also helped produce Berkeley Earth’s global temperature report that was released this week. He said it is likely that 2026 will fall “somewhere between the second and fourth warmest” years on record.

    “The new data is the latest unequivocal evidence that our climate is in crisis,” said Carlos Martinez, a senior climate scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists. But “the Trump administration is not simply refusing to face the reality of climate change we are experiencing, it is actively lying about science and undermining our nation’s federal scientific resources.”

    Last year wasn’t only warm globally. The contiguous U.S. experienced the fourth-warmest year in its 131-year record, according to NOAA’s assessment. Utah and Nevada recorded their warmest years on record at 4.3 degrees and 3.7 degrees above their 20th century averages, respectively. California tied for its fourth-warmest year on record.

    NOAA previously tracked weather and climate disasters where damages exceed $1 billion, but the Trump administration shut down that database last year. The administration also fired hundreds of scientists working to prepare the congressionally mandated National Climate Assessment and removed the website that housed previous assessments.

    Officials with multiple international groups this week stressed that global cooperation is key as warmer temperatures worldwide worsen the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heat waves, wildfires and floods.

    “Collaborative and scientifically rigorous global data collection is more important than ever before because we need to ensure that Earth information is authoritative, accessible and actionable for all,” said Celeste Saulo, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization.

    “Data and observations are essential to our efforts to confront climate change and air quality challenges, and these challenges don’t know borders,” said Florian Pappenberger, director-general of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. However, he noted that NOAA Administrator Neil Jacobs has committed to not deleting any data, “which is a welcome thing.”

    “Data don’t lie,” Pappenberger said. “All we need to do is measure them.”

The privatization of space travel continued apace, with companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin making strides this year. Despite privatization and looming funding cuts, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its various projects and endeavors still managed to surprise us and expand our knowledge of our solar system. The mission was meant to last eight days — but ended up lasting more than nine months. The stranded astronauts became space celebrities and brought renewed attention to spaceflight during a time when space travel has morphed into a blend of public-private partnerships. In that way, stating a goal of putting a nuclear reactor on the moon is the first step to reaching Mars, another stated goal of NASA. In the Russia/Ukraine war this past year, Ukraine accused Russian operators of hijacking a crucial satellite, replacing its broadcast with film of Russian military parades. More recently, there has been chatter of a Russian anti-satellite weapon, which one U.S. representative likened to “the Cuban Missile Crisis in space.”

    From private space tourism to secret moons to new images of our very old observable universe, 2025 was an exciting year in space. The privatization of space travel continued apace, with companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin making strides this year. Despite privatization and looming funding cuts, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its various projects and endeavors still managed to surprise us and expand our knowledge of our solar system.     No. 1 — The space saga of Butch and Suni

          Without a doubt, the space story that filled the most airtime this year was the tale of NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. In June 2024, the pair signed on for a NASA mission to conduct a crew flight test of Boeing’s Starliner craft, which had previously only been used for uncrewed tests between Earth and the International Space Station. The mission was meant to last eight days — but ended up lasting more than nine months. The stranded astronauts became space celebrities and brought renewed attention to spaceflight during a time when space travel has morphed into a blend of public-private partnerships. The astronauts were eventually brought home on SpaceX’s Crew-9 vessel in March, marking a success for SpaceX but a blow to Boeing in the private space race.

          No. 2 — Perseverance finds possible hints of ancient life on Mars

          NASA’s Perseverance rover has been roaming the Martian surface and collecting samples since 2021. But in the summer of 2024, the rover collected rock samples from a dried riverbed near the Jezero Crater with “leopard spots.” This year, scientists said those spots could suggest the existence of ancient microbial life on the red planet. “All we can say is one of the possible explanations is microbial life, but there could be other ways to make this set of features that we see,” a researcher told The Associated Press.

          However, this story is not over. More testing is needed to confirm what the samples contain, meaning they need to be retrieved from Mars and brought back to labs on Earth. A Mars Sample Return trip was hopefully scheduled for the early 2030s, but various factors, including President Donald Trump’s reorganized budget plan for NASA, mean that the return expedition is on hold indefinitely. For now, Perseverance and a potential secret to ancient life sit waiting in a rocky Martian desert.

          No. 3 — NASA probe takes closest-ever images of sun

          The Parker Solar Probe, the fastest human-made object in the universe, is on a mission to “touch the Sun” — and it’s getting pretty close. In December 2024, the probe made its closest pass yet of the solar atmosphere, traveling at a speed of 430,000 mph. On Jan. 1, 2025, it sent back the closest images of the Sun ever captured, specifically of solar wind approximately 3.8 million miles from the surface.

          No. 4 — NASA’s Webb telescope discovers new moon orbiting Uranus

            Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope discovered a new moon orbiting Uranus in images taken by Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera). This image shows the moon, designated S/2025 U1, as well as 13 of the 28 other known moons orbiting the planet. (The small moon Cordelia orbits just inside the outermost ring, but is not visible in these views due to glare from the rings.) Due to the drastic differences in brightness levels, the image is a composite of three different treatments of the data, allowing the viewer to see details in the planetary atmosphere, the surrounding rings, and the orbiting moons. The data was taken with NIRCam’s wide band F150W2 filter that transmits infrared wavelengths from about 1.0 to 2.4 microns.

            It’s not every day you find a new moon. Using NASA’s Webb space telescope, a team from the Southwest Research Institute studying the rings and moons of Uranus made a stunning discovery — a small moon, only about 6 miles wide, had been “hiding” close to the seventh planet this whole time. The discovery joins the planet’s 28 existing moons, designated S/2025 U1. But more observations are needed to confirm the finding.X-rays can originate from interactions between gases given off by the comet — such as water vapor, carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide — and the continuous stream of charged particles releasing from the sun called solar wind. Comets, which are a combination of ice, rock, dust and gas, heat up as they approach stars like the sun, causing them to sublimate materials. XRISM detected signatures of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen near the comet’s nucleus. The European Space Agency’s X-ray space observatory XMM-Newton also observed the interstellar comet on December 3 for about 20 hours using its most sensitive camera. A dramatic image released by the agency shows the red X-ray glow of the comet.The X-ray observations, combined with others across various wavelengths of light, could reveal what the comet is made of — and just how similar or different the object is from those in our own solar system.

    “This was a very challenging observation for the instrument,” Nick Thomas, principal investigator of the orbiter’s camera, said in a statement, noting the comet is around 10,000 to 100,000 times “fainter than our usual target.”

    ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, or Juice, will also attempt to observe 3I/ATLAS in November using multiple instruments despite the comet being farther from the spacecraft than it was when observed by the Mars orbiters. But astronomers don’t expect to receive the observations until February due to the rate at which the spacecraft is sending data back to Earth.

    XRISM captured an image of comet 3I/ATLAS in X-ray light.

    X-rays can originate from interactions between gases given off by the comet — such as water vapor, carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide — and the continuous stream of charged particles releasing from the sun called solar wind. Comets, which are a combination of ice, rock, dust and gas, heat up as they approach stars like the sun, causing them to sublimate materials. XRISM detected signatures of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen near the comet’s nucleus.

    The European Space Agency’s X-ray space observatory XMM-Newton also observed the interstellar comet on December 3 for about 20 hours using its most sensitive camera. A dramatic image released by the agency shows the red X-ray glow of the comet.

    The X-ray observations, combined with others across various wavelengths of light, could reveal what the comet is made of — and just how similar or different the object is from those in our own solar system.

  • Fourth Disney World visitor dies in a month, as woman in her 40s is found dead at hotel

    A Disney World guest has been found dead inside a hotel, making her the fourth visitor to die at the doomed resort in just one month

    A woman in her 40s was found unresponsive at the Pop Century Resort in the early hours of Sunday morning. 

    She was later pronounced dead in hospital, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office told the Daily Mail. There were no signs of foul play.

    The Daily Mail has reached out to Disney World for more information. 

    The fatality has continued the eerie pattern at the ‘happiest place on Earth’ over the past month.

    Disney superfan Summer Equitz, 31, died by suicide at the Contemporary Resort Hotel on October 14. 

    Her cause of death was ruled as multiple blunt impact injuries, with the medical examiner providing no further information.

    Equitz, who visited Disney World during her honeymoon, had flown out to the resort from Illinois without telling her family before she died. 

    Just days later, on October 21, a 60-year-old man died after suffering a medical episode at the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

    The man had been traveling with his wife, who found him unresponsive. 

    The Nurse Anesthetists’ report, reviewed by People, did not include a cause of death, but noted that he suffered from hypertension and end-stage liver disease.

    Aspiring NFL referee Matthew Cohn, 28, was the most recent person to die at the resort before Sunday’s victim.

    Cohn took his own life at the same hotel as Equitz on October 23. He reportedly jumped from a balcony.

  • Small asteroid detected hours after it passed closer to Earth than some satellites

    Oct. 8 (UPI) — International space agencies say an asteroid zipped by Earth closer than a large number of satellites currently in orbit, but was not detected until hours later.

    The European Space Agency said Monday that a 3- to 10-foot-wide asteroid was picked up by radar last Wednesday some 265 miles above Earth over Antarctica, near Earth’s most southern point, at an altitude similar to that of the International Space Station.

    “Tracking down a meter-scale object in the vast darkness of space at a time when its location is still uncertain is an impressive feat,” ESA, headquartered in France with offices dotted around the European continent, said on its website.

    According to NASA, astronomers at the ESA’s planetary defense office failed to notice the asteroid named 2025 TF until hours later it passed by.

    “This observation helped astronomers determine the close approach distance and time given above to such high precision,” European officials noted.

    Space satellites typically orbit at an altitude between 100 to 1,000 or more miles out.

    The small space object did not pose a large danger to Earth, European space officials added.

    But it did, however, have the ability to turn into a fireball of it hit Earth’s atmosphere and transitioned into a meteorite.

    A 2023 event saw one of the closest-ever recorded approaches by a near-Earth object.

    Over the summer, America’s space agency also revealed that a large asteroid had a little more than 4% probability of striking the moon by the end of 2032.

    But NASA authorities said this week that asteroid 2025 TF is not likely to fly by Earth until possibly April of 2087, some 62 years from now.

  • Trippy Image From Deep Space Shows Earth and Moon From 180 Million Miles Away

    The Psyche spacecraft is on a six-year journey to reach a metal-rich asteroid by the same name. Well into its voyage, the probe looked back at its home planet and captured a rare view of Earth, accompanied by its Moon, as a mere speck engulfed by the dark void of space.

    NASA’s Psyche mission launched on October 13, 2023, and is assigned to explore a distant target in the main asteroid belt that’s believed to be the exposed core of a protoplanet. Before it reaches its destination, the imaging team behind the mission is testing the spacecraft’s ability to capture objects that shine by light reflected from the Sun. The target objects of these tests are awfully familiar—our very own planet and moon—but they were taken from a rather unfamiliar perspective.

    In July, scientists on the imaging team snapped multiple, long-exposure photos of Earth and the Moon. The pair is seen amidst a dark background littered with several stars in the constellation Aries. Earth appears as a bright dot, with the Moon sitting right above it. The image was taken from about 180 million miles (290 kilometers) away and offers a rare look at our planet as seen from deep space.

    The photo brings the famous Pale Blue Dot to mind, an image of Earth captured by the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1990. That image was taken from a distance of 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers), with Earth appearing as a mere speck amid the cosmic backdrop.

    Although it wasn’t captured from the same distance, Psyche’s recent image is a similar reminder of Earth’s place and size in the solar system. The spacecraft is equipped with a pair of cameras, designed to collect pictures in wavelengths of light that are both visible and invisible to the human eye, to help determine the composition of the metal-rich asteroid.

    Psyche needs to travel a total of around 2.2 billion miles to reach the main asteroid belt and enter asteroid Psyche’s orbit in late July 2029. The 173-mile-wide (280-kilometer) asteroid orbits the Sun in the outer part of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists believe the space rock might be an exposed core of a planetesimal, or an early planetary building block, which was stripped of its outer layer during the early formation of the solar system.

While scientists have known that the westward drift of the storm has an unexplained 90-day oscillation, the accelerating and decelerating pattern doesn’t seem to change although the storm is shrinking, he said.“By watching the GRS over a few months, Hubble has shown that the anticyclone itself is changing its shape along with this oscillation,” Fletcher said. “The shape change is important, as it may be affecting how the edge of the vortex interacts with other passing storms. Besides the gorgeous Hubble imagery, this study shows the power of observing atmospheric systems over long periods of time. You need that sort of monitoring to spot these patterns, and it’s clear that the longer you watch, the more structure you see in the chaotic weather.”

    Recently, a separate team of astronomers peered into the heart of the Great Red Spot using the James Webb Space Telescope to capture new details in infrared light. The Hubble observations were made in visible and ultraviolet light.

    The study, published Sept. 27 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, revealed that the Great Red Spot is cold in the center, which causes ammonia and water to condense inside the vortex and create thick clouds. The research team also detected the gas phosphine within the storm, which could play “a role in generating those mysterious” red colors that make the Great Red Spot so iconic, said study co-author Leigh Fletcher, a professor of planetary science at the U.K.’s University of Leicester, in a statement.

    NASA scientists use Hubble’s sharp eye to track the storm’s behavior once a year through the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy, or OPAL, program, which Simon leads. Scientists use this program to observe the outer planets in our solar system and watch how they change over time.

    But the new observations were made separately through a program dedicated to studying the Great Red Spot in more detail by watching how the storm changed over a matter of months rather than a singular, yearly snapshot.

    Astronomers have noticed the Great Red Spot shrinking since the OPAL program began a decade ago and predict that it will continue to shrink until it reaches a stable, less-elongated shape, which could reduce the wobble.

    “Right now it’s over-filling its latitude band relative to the wind field. Once it shrinks inside that band the winds will really be holding it in place,” Simon said.

    The new Hubble study fills in more pieces of the puzzle about the Great Red Spot, Fletcher said. While scientists have known that the westward drift of the storm has an unexplained 90-day oscillation, the accelerating and decelerating pattern doesn’t seem to change although the storm is shrinking, he said.

    “By watching the GRS over a few months, Hubble has shown that the anticyclone itself is changing its shape along with this oscillation,” Fletcher said. “The shape change is important, as it may be affecting how the edge of the vortex interacts with other passing storms. Besides the gorgeous Hubble imagery, this study shows the power of observing atmospheric systems over long periods of time. You need that sort of monitoring to spot these patterns, and it’s clear that the longer you watch, the more structure you see in the chaotic weather.”

    The most powerful eruption on the sun in years is extending the range in which the northern lights will be visible to possibly as far south as Pennsylvania – maybe even into the Philadelphia region – and the best chance to see the colorful auroras is predicted to be Saturday night. 

    The explosion, known as a coronal mass ejection, occurred Thursday. Scientists say it is strongest CME recorded since 2017, and it flung clouds of magnetized plasma into the solar system, creating a geomagnetic storm headed towards Earth.

    The charged particles emitted from the sun interact with the Earth’s magnetic field, creating the array for colors in the night sky known as the northern lights or aurora borealis. In normal conditions the northern lights are only visible within the range of about 1,500 miles from the North Pole. Because of the power of this CME the aurora will be more intense, pushing the viewable range of the lights much further south.

    But predicting when and where the northern lights will appear is difficult, even for experts. 

    “The challenge is actually understanding how severe the eruption is on the sun,” Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute, said, “and how far down it will reach from the poles of the planet, down towards the mid-latitudes.”

    Thursday’s eruption was the second CME this week. Both were accompanied by solar flares that emitted intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation traveling at the speed of light that reached the Earth about 8 minutes after each occured.

    The magnetized plasma from the CME travels slower and can take 15 hours to several days to reach the Earth’s magnetic field, which results in the delay between Thursday’s eruption and the peak of the expected celestial event. It also makes it difficult to predict precisely when the northern lights will become more intense.

    The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center maintains an aurora dashboard on its website. It has maps that show nightly predictions of the range of the aurora, other maps that forecast where the aurora will be visible in the next few minutes and more information. 

    There had been a chance the northern lights would be visible in the region on Friday night but cloudy skies interfered.

    On Saturday night, the geomagnetic energy will be stronger and the National Weather Service predicts the sky over Philadelphia will be mostly clear.

    The best opportunity to see the northern lights will be as far away from light pollution as possible. Pitts suggested going at least 60 miles north of Philadelphia to get away from the city’s lights – the closer to the Pennsylvania-New York border, the better. 

    Shawn Dahl, coordinator of NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said it’s a good idea to stake out the night sky around midnight.

    “Usually we’re talking about a four-hour window – two hours before midnight, two hours after midnight – but that window of time can broaden the stronger the activity,” Dahl said. “The less strong the activity, that window can shorten up, but still a good time to start looking is a couple hours after dark, especially if conditions are favorable.” 

    Look low on the horizon for the aurora, Dahl said. If you can’t see anything, try taking a picture with a smartphone and other digital camera, both sometimes can pick up the lights better than the naked eye.

    Autumn and spring are the best seasons for the aurora borealis because of the greater tendency for geomagnetic storms. This year, it also is a particularly active time because of the sun’s solar cycle: Every 11 years the sun’s magnetic poles flip and ahead of this happening there are more frequent CMEs, solar flares and sunspots.

    The solar cycle will peak between the end of this year and early 2026. This period is called a solar maximum, Dahl said, which means the sun gets a little more “stressed out” and releases more energy. 

    So there could be more opportunities to see the northern lights during the next 18 months, but it’s impossible to say for sure. Pitts noted that not only do do the eruptions have to occur, they also have to be directed towards Earth so the geomagnetic storm collides with the Earth’s magnetic field.

    NASA and Boeing safely returned the uncrewed Starliner spacecraft to Earth, landing at 12:01am ET on September 6th at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico, and concluding a three-month flight test to the International Space Station.

    Starliner now will ship to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Central Florida for inspection and processing.

    “I am extremely proud of the work our collective team put into this entire flight test, and we are pleased to see Starliner’s safe return,” said Ken Bowersox, associate administrator, Space Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Even though it was necessary to return the spacecraft uncrewed, NASA and Boeing learned an incredible amount about Starliner in the most extreme environment possible. NASA looks forward to our continued work with the Boeing team to proceed toward certification of Starliner for crew rotation missions to the space station.”

    The flight on June 5th was the first time astronauts launched aboard the Starliner. It was the third orbital flight of the spacecraft, and its second return from the orbiting laboratory.

    NASA’s Commercial Crew Program requires a spacecraft to fly a crewed test flight to prove the system is ready for regular flights to and from the orbiting laboratory. Following Starliner’s return, the agency will review all mission-related data.

    NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched on June 5th aboard Starliner for the agency’s Boeing Crewed Flight Test from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Central Florida. On June 6th, as Starliner approached the space station, NASA and Boeing identified helium leaks and experienced issues with the spacecraft’s reaction control thrusters.

    Following weeks of in-space and ground testing, technical interchange meetings, and agency reviews, NASA made the decision to prioritize safety and return Starliner without its crew.

    Wilmore and Williams will continue their work aboard station as part of the Expedition 71/72 crew, returning in February 2025 with the agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission.

    “We are excited to have Starliner home safely. This was an important test flight for NASA in setting us up for future missions on the Starliner system,” said Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. “There was a lot of valuable learning that will enable our long-term success. I want to commend the entire team for their hard work and dedication over the past three months.”

    The crew flight test is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The goal of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation to and from the International Space Station and low Earth orbit. This already is providing additional research time and has increased the opportunity for discovery aboard humanity’s microgravity testbed, including helping NASA prepare for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

    The European Space Agency says it is closely watching and adjusting the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) as it attempts to whip the spacecraft around the moon and the Earth as part of a multipart journey towards the largest planet in our solar system.

    JUICE will perform the risky maneuver between August 19 and 20; the craft will be closest to the Earth at around 12:00 a.m. ET (UTC +02:00) on August 20.

    The ESA said in a statement that the craft’s intended acrobatics — a lunar-Earth flyby and a double gravity assist maneuver — will amount to a “double world first.” The gravity assist will alter the research vehicle’s speed and direction, but getting it right will be tricky, the agency explained. Even the tiniest error “could take JUICE off course and spell the end of the mission,” the ESA wrote.

    JUICE kicked off its trip with a launch in April 2023 and a trajectory adjustment seven months later. As it navigates past Earth and performs tests of onboard instruments, the craft will harness the planet’s gravity to slow down and “bend” towards Venus, looping around the planet in August 2025 before heading back towards Earth. (The slowdown is necessary in order to limit the amount of fuel needed to ease JUICE into orbit around other planets).

    Then, the craft will perform two more loops around Earth (one in September 2026 and another January 2029) in order to reach the correct path and speed to enter Jupiter’s orbit in 2031. From there, JUICE will observe the fifth planet from the sun and its icy moons.

    Ignacio Tanco, JUICE’s spacecraft operations manager, said the lunar-Earth flyby will be like “passing through a very narrow corridor, very, very quickly: pushing the accelerator to the maximum when the margin at the side of the road is just millimetres.”

    Only the most fortunate JUICE heads will be able to spot the craft using a telescope or high-powered binoculars, the ESA said, when it flies “directly over Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean.” The agency shared the craft’s trajectory data here. An easier way to follow along, however, will be to monitor the ESA’s blog or X (formerly Twitter) account, which is where the agency plans to post photos taken by JUICE’s two monitoring cameras during the flyby on Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

    Venus and Jupiter aren’t the only planets under watch by the ESA’s spacecraft. The agency’s Mars Express Orbiter recently returned stunning images of the red planet’s “snaking scar.” As for the ESA’s U.S. counterpart, NASA is looking for private-sector help to get its abandoned rover to the moon. NASA has also sought help from private space companies as it plots the destruction of the one-million-pound International Space Station, after it retires the station at the end of 2030.

    Colorado has three years to lower ground-level ozone pollution to meet federal standards, and this summer’s hazy skies — caused by oil and gas drilling, heavy vehicle traffic and wildfire smoke — are putting the state in a hole as it’s already logged more dirty air days than in all of 2023.

    “Our state has taken a lot of steps to improve air quality, but you can see it in the skies, you can see it in the air, that we still have work to do,” said Kirsten Schatz, clean air advocate for the Colorado Public Interest Research Group.

    Two months into the 2024 summer ozone season, the Front Range already has recorded more high ozone days than the entire summer of 2023. As of Monday, which is the most recent data available, ozone levels had exceeded federal air quality standards on 28 days. At the same point in 2023, there had been 27 high-ozone days.

    The summer ozone season runs from June 1 to Aug. 31. However, the region encompassing metro Denver and the northern Front Range this year recorded its first high ozone day in May, and in some years ozone pollution exceeds federal standards into mid-September.

    The region is failing to meet two air quality standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

    The first benchmark is to lower average ozone pollution to a 2008 standard of 75 parts per billion. The northern Front Range is in what’s called “severe non-attainment” for that number, meaning motorists must use a more expensive blend of gasoline during the summer and more businesses must apply for federal permits that regulate how much pollution they spill into the air.

    The second benchmark requires the region to lower its average ozone pollution to a 2015 standard of 70 parts per billion, considered the most acceptable level of air pollution for human health. In July, the EPA downgraded the northern Front Range to be in serious violation of that standard as the region’s ozone level now sits at 81 parts per billion. The state must now submit to the EPA a new plan for lowering emissions.

    Colorado needs to meet both EPA benchmarks by 2027, or it will be downgraded again and face more federal regulation.

    Of the 28 days the state has recorded high ozone pollution levels, 17 exceeded the 2008 standard of 70 parts per billion, according to data compiled by the Regional Air Quality Council, an organization that advises the state on how to reduce air pollution.

    That’s bad news for the region after state air regulators predicted Colorado would be able to meet that standard by the 2027 deadline. The EPA calculates average ozone pollution levels on a three-year average, so this summer’s bad numbers will drag down the final grade.

    “It’s not a good first year to have,” said Mike Silverstein, the air quality council’s executive director.

    Smoke from wildfires near and far

    Ground-level ozone pollution forms on hot summer days when volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides react in the sunlight. Those compounds and gases are released by oil and gas wells and refineries, automobiles on the road, fumes from paint and other industrial chemicals, and gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

    It forms a smog that can cause the skies to become brown or hazy, and it is harmful to people, especially those with lung and heart disease, the elderly and children. Ground-level ozone is different than the ozone in the atmosphere that protects Earth from the sun’s powerful rays.

    Wildfire smoke blowing from Canada and the Pacific Northwest did not help Colorado’s pollution levels in July, and then multiple fires erupted along the Front Range over the past week, creating homegrown pollution from fine particulate matter such as smoke, soot and ash. Ultimately, though, the heavy smoke days could be wiped from the calculations from 2024, but that decision will be made at a later date.

    Still, June also saw multiple high ozone days, and air quality experts say much of the pollution originates at home in Colorado and cannot be blamed on outside influences.

    The out-of-state wildfire smoke sent ozone levels skyrocketing the week of July 21 to 27, Silverstein said, but it’s not the reason the numbers are high. The week prior saw ozone levels above federal standards, too, and wildfire smoke had not drifted into the region.

    “Pull the wildfires out and we would probably still have had high ozone,” he said.

    Jeremy Nichols, senior advocate for the Center for Biological Diversity, also warned that wildfires should not be used as an excuse for the region’s air pollution.

    “While the wildfires are out of our control, there is a whole bunch of air pollution we can control,” he said. “I don’t want to let that cover up the ugliness that existed here in the first place.”

    Nichols blames oil and gas drilling for the region’s smog. The state is not doing enough to regulate the industry, he said.

    “We actually need to recognize we are at a point where oil and gas needs to stop drilling on high ozone days,” Nichols said. “Just like we’re told to stay home on high ozone days, business as usual needs to stop. I don’t think we’ve clamped down on them and in many respects they are getting a free pass to pollute.”

    Legislation that would have prevented drilling on high ozone days failed during the 2024 session.

    However, the air quality council has approved two measures to reduce emissions in the oil fields and is preparing to send those to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for approval.

    One proposal would require drilling companies to eliminate emissions from pneumatic actuating devices, equipment driven by pressurized gas to open and close valves in pipelines, Silverstein said. Oil companies already are required to make 50% of those devices emission-free, and the federal government also is requiring them to be 100% emission-free by 2035. But Colorado’s proposal would accelerate the timeline, he said.

    The second proposal would tell companies to stop performing blowdowns, which is when workers vent fumes from pipelines before beginning maintenance to clear explosive gases, when an ozone alert is issued, Silverstein said.

    “There are thousands of these very small events, but these small events add up to significant activity,” he said.

    Gabby Richmond, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, said the industry supports the new regulations. She said operators also were electrifying operations where possible and voluntarily delaying operational activities on high ozone days.

    “Our industry values clean air, and we are committed to pioneering innovative solutions that protect our environment and make Colorado a great place to live,” Richmond said in a statement. “As a part of this commitment, we have significantly reduced ozone-causing emissions by over 50% through technology, regulatory initiatives and voluntary measures — all in the spirit of being good neighbors in the communities where we live and work.”

    “Knock down emissions where we can”

    Meanwhile, people who live in metro Denver and the northern Front Range are asked to do their part, too.

    Thinking about death can change how we live our lives. Our time on Earth is limited, and this realization can completely shift our perspective. It puts our real values and priorities into sharp focus, causing us to step back and re-evaluate if we are living our current lives in the best way possible.

    When I was going through a period of depression in college, I would take the bus to the local cemetery by myself with nothing but my camera. I’ve always been comfortable with solitude and doing things alone, but these cemetery walks were an especially meaningful and humbling experience for me. Walking among the graves and reading the names of people I’d never know showed me that life is much bigger than my ego. The realization that death is a necessary part of life sparked me to reevaluate and see the bigger picture behind my choices and actions.

    These cemetery walks were a powerful reminder that I would be dead one day too – but not yet – and that filled me with a sense of power and responsibility so long as I’m still breathing.

    How people think about death can have a profound effect on their psychology. Some people face the prospect of mortality by ignoring it and engaging in escapist behaviors driven by materialism (“buy more things”) or hedonism (“seek more pleasure”). Others embrace the prospect of death and recognize that it means they need to make the most of their time here before it’s too late.

    In the popular book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing, Bronnie Ware documents her experiences in palliative care, working closely with those who had terminal illnesses or were approaching the end-of-life. She identified five main regrets of the dying based on conversations and confessions with those on their deathbeds.

    This article will outline her main findings along with my personal thoughts on each one.

    Deathbed Motivation: Top 5 Regrets of the Dying

    According to Bronnie Ware, the five most common regrets shared by people nearing death were:

    “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”

    It’s cliché but true: you only have one life to live.

    Many people cave to social pressures to choose paths in life that are expected of them, such as what school to attend, or what career to pursue, or what types of relationships to cultivate. However, what brings one person happiness isn’t necessarily what brings another person happiness. If we only try to make others happy, we often end up neglecting our own needs, wants, passions, and ideals.

    Understanding your core values is one of the most important steps you can take in life. Knowing what you really want will help you make choices that are harmonious with what you really care about, not just what you think you “should do” or “ought to do.” One interesting study published in the journal Emotions found that our most enduring and long-lasting regrets are usually “ideal-related,” such as personal goals and aspirations.

    Our biggest regrets are often the things we didn’t do but always wanted to, like starting a rock band, or writing a book, or traveling to a place we always wanted to visit.

    “I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.”

    Most people don’t lay on their deathbeds thinking, “I wish I spent more time at my job.”

    Work is important and it can be fulfilling, but many people in today’s world become myopically focused on advancing in their jobs/careers or making more money by any means necessary (sometimes even in unhealthy, destructive, or unethical ways).

    We wrongly believe that wealth is the only real measure of value in life, and thus we get distracted from other important things like spending more time with family, taking care of our health, giving back to our community, or pursuing personal passions.

    In our materialistic and consumerist culture, nothing seems more important than “working hard” and “making money,” but as the saying goes, “You can’t take it with you when you die.”

    “I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.”

    We often have trouble expressing our true feelings toward people because we see emotions as weakness or we don’t want to risk being vulnerable.

    This is especially true when it comes to feelings of love, gratitude, and appreciation. There are some families, cultures, and couples where it’s rare to hear the words, “I love you,” or “I appreciate you.” The feelings are taken for granted, but they are never explicitly said.

    It’s important that we learn to express love and appreciation toward others while we still can (including toward family, friends, loved ones, or mentors), because we will often regret it if we miss our chance.

    Recently I wrote my mom a thank you letter for her birthday. It helped me communicate a lot of feelings that I’ve always had but were difficult to say out-loud. It felt like an emotional weight was lifted off my shoulders once I finally expressed my tremendous gratitude for her and everything she’s done for me.

    There are also people I’ve lost in life whom I was never able to tell that I appreciated them. Those are regrets I’ll have to live with – the crucial lesson is don’t miss the opportunity to tell people you love them while you still can.

    “I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.”

    One common theme in life is that relationships come and go.

    Our circle of friends often changes dramatically throughout high school, college, and into adulthood, especially when we move to new places or leave our hometowns. We tend to lose touch with people over time. Those who were once “best friends” we now go years without even speaking to.

    In theory, it’s easier to stay in touch with people now more than ever; old friends and family are just a call, text, or email away, yet we rarely take advantage of these opportunities.

    It’s never too late to check in on past connections. It can seem awkward at first to reach out to those we haven’t seen in years, but often they will appreciate the gesture and you both will enjoy reconnecting and reminiscing about your shared past.

    The simple act of checking in on people on a regular basis (such as holidays, birthdays, reunions, etc.) can preserve our social connections over time and remind us all the positive relationships and social support we have. Each person you stay in touch with is another layer of meaning in your life.

    “I wish that I had let myself be happier.”

    People are too busy these days to be happy.

    We get easily trapped in the hustle and bustle of daily life with work, school, chores, family, and other responsibilities and obligations. In the midst of all this, many forget the simple art of stepping back and finding happiness in the moment.

    You don’t need to wait for something life-changing to be happy. Many people don’t realize that happiness is in their control and you can start finding it in little things, like savoring positive experiences, counting your blessings, having things to look forward to, and prioritizing positive activities. These are habits that are available to anyone no matter what their current situation is in life. You don’t need to be rich or famous; in fact, sometimes those people are the most distracted and least happy.

    If happiness is a skill, then it’s something that’s worth learning. It isn’t magic, it’s a direct result of how you think, act, and view your world.

    The Time That Remains

    If you are reading this right now, then you still have power over how you live the rest of your life. Every new breath is a symbol of this power.

    Which of the big five regrets do you relate to the most? Living too much by other people’s expectations, focusing too much on work, not communicating your true feelings, losing touch with old friends and family, or simply not finding time for more happiness?

    These are important questions worth reflecting on. Take a moment to imagine yourself on your deathbed, which regrets would hurt the most? What can you still do about it?

    It was almost 10 years ago when Andrew Thorpe received a text from the crew flying overhead in a small aircraft: They had spotted a new methane hot spot.

    Thorpe drove along winding dirt and mountain roads in an unwieldy rental SUV near the Four Corners region of the southwestern U.S. When he arrived at the spot relayed from the plane, he pulled out a thermal camera to scan for the plume. Sure enough, methane was seeping out of the ground, likely from a pipeline leak.

    He found a marker sticking out of the desert with the phone number for a gas company, so he gave them a call. “I had the most confused individual on the other side of the phone,” Thorpe said. “I was trying to explain to them why I was calling, but this was back many years ago when there really weren’t any technologies that could do this.”

    Over the years, the work has gotten Thorpe some unwanted attention. “I did some driving surveys in California .… A rent-a-cop was very suspicious of me and tried to scare me off,” said Thorpe. “If you set up a thermal camera on a public road and you’re pointing it at a tank beyond the fence, people are going to get nervous. I’ve been heckled by some oil and gas workers, but that’s par for the course.”

    Today, Thorpe is part of a group that is at the forefront of greenhouse gas monitoring at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge. For over 40 years, the Microdevices Laboratory at JPL has developed specialized instruments to measure methane and carbon dioxide with extreme precision.

    The instruments, called spectrometers, detect gases based on which colors of sunlight they absorb. Earlier this year, a team of researchers from JPL, Caltech and research nonprofit Carnegie Science was selected as a finalist for a NASA award to put the technology into orbit.

    JPL technicians work on an Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer, or AVIRIS, that will be installed in an airplane to search for methane and other greenhouse gases.

    If chosen for the satellite mission, the team’s carbon investigation, called Carbon-I, would launch in the early 2030s. Over the course of three years, Carbon-I would continuously map greenhouse gas emissions around the globe and take daily snapshots of areas of interest, allowing scientists to identify sources of climate pollution, such as power plants, pipeline leaks, farms and landfills.

    While there are already multiple satellites monitoring these gases, Carbon-I’s resolution is unprecedented and would eliminate any guesswork in determining where the gas was emitted. “There’s no denying it anymore — once we see a plume, there’s no other potential source,” said Christian Frankenberg, co-principal investigator for Carbon-I and a professor of environmental science and engineering at Caltech.

    Carbon-I’s finest, 100-foot resolution “is a very high resolution from space. That’s an incredible resolution to be able to get,” said Debra Wunch, a professor at the University of Toronto who studies Earth’s carbon cycle and is not involved in the Carbon-I proposal. “It would be able to give us much more insight into exactly the source of emissions .… This would be groundbreaking. You would be able to see individual stacks, individual parts of landfills, even.”

    Historically, monitoring the release of greenhouse gases from individual emitters has been challenging — both carbon dioxide and methane are colorless and odorless. So scientists have often had to rely on adding up self-reported values from companies and estimates from research. For example, to estimate the amount of methane cows produce, scientists would have to determine how much methane one cow releases and multiply it by the total number of cows on Earth.

    “If you look at international policies … currently they’re all based on these bottom-up inventories,” said Anna Michalak, co-principal investigator for Carbon-I and the founding director of the Carnegie Climate and Resilience Hub at Carnegie Science. “We need to get to a point where … we actually have an independent way of tracking what the emissions are.”

    Carbon-I’s resolution will also give scientists new access to the atmosphere of the tropics, where clouds currently obscure most forms of satellite surveillance. “It’s their Achilles’ heel,” said Frankenberg.

    Since tropical and subtropical forests absorb roughly a quarter of the CO2 humanity produces by burning fossil fuels, accurate data from this region of the globe is badly needed.

    Satellites currently orbiting Earth with lower resolution can’t see through small gaps in the cloud coverage. They only see a blurred average of the cloudy and clear spots in the sky for each pixel. Carbon-I, with each pixel’s area almost 50 times smaller than that of most other satellites, can see the clearings and take measurements through them. In an April 2024 paper, Frankenberg, Michalak and their collaborators estimated that Carbon-I would be able to see past the clouds in the tropics anywhere from 10 to 100 times more frequently than its predecessors.

    Carbon-I “is going to see things where people don’t know what’s going on,” said Thorpe, who has moved on from his graduate school days pointing thermal cameras at gas leaks and now works as a research technologist with the Microdevices Laboratory. “It’s going to open a whole new realm of science.”

    JPL’s airborne greenhouse gas-monitoring program goes back decades, but the field of space monitoring is still fairly new. Near the start of 2016, NASA headquarters contacted the JPL team. There was an ongoing massive blowout at the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility near Porter Ranch, and NASA wanted the team to check it out.

    The team flew over the site in a variant of a 1960s-era spy plane on three days over the course of a month while the Southern California Gas Co. fought to contain the blowout. At the same time, NASA’s Goddard Flight Center in Maryland pointed the NASA Earth Observing spacecraft’s Hyperion spectrometer at the leak.

    Hyperion was designed to make observations of the Earth’s surface and filter out noise from the atmosphere. Now, they were trying to observe the atmosphere and filter out the surface, and for the first time, scientists observed a human-made point source of methane from orbit.

    “The Hyperion result was pretty noisy, but you could still see the plume,” said Thorpe. “This was really a proof of concept that we could do it from space.”

    Even if Carbon-I launches, it doesn’t mean the team will stop putting instruments on planes. From aircraft, the team is able to monitor areas of interest in even sharper resolution and for consecutive days at a time. Right now, a leaner, meaner version of the spectrometers that observed the Four Corners leak and Aliso Canyon blowout is flying a series of missions to monitor the emissions of offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

    Plane missions also give the team an opportunity to try out new and improve spectrometers. “You can fix them, and you can upgrade them,” said JPL engineer Michael Eastwood, who’s worked with the spectrometers for over three decades and regularly flies with them. “You can take more risks, as opposed to spacecraft that need really mature, really well-known, high reliability — we’re not constrained like that.”

    The air team is nimble, too. Typically, two crew members sit in the second row of a King Air twin-propeller aircraft looking at a stack of laptops and instruments with enough buttons to rival the plane’s cockpit. On the screens, they can look at real-time GPS data and spectrometer results and coordinate a flight plan with the pilots. The spectrometer — called AVIRIS, short for Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer — sits in the third row, looking down through a window cut out in the floor.

    The NASA program for which Carbon-I was selected as a finalist aims to fund space-based Earth science that will benefit society. The team was awarded $5 million to sharpen its project proposal before a final NASA review in 2025. There are three other finalists, and two will be selected for the launch.

    This two-step process for selecting missions is new for NASA’s Earth science programs and requires JPL to compete with the rest of the scientific community, independent of their association with the space agency.

    “If we’re talking about grocery money, [$5 million] seems like a lot of money, but it’s really a bargain,” said Michalak. “If you think about the fact that you’re committing $300 million toward a mission, spending 1.5% of that to really make sure it’s going to be fabulous and successful is extremely smart.”

    In the meantime, the Carbon-I team is focused on showing NASA that it has the technical know-how to execute the project on time and under budget.

    “I think all four of the missions in the current phase are absolutely worthwhile scientific missions,” said Michalak, “and 50% odds are not bad odds for a satellite mission.”

    Human composting and timber marketplaces: talking “industrial” VC with investor Dayna Grayson | TechCrunch

    While the venture world is abuzz over generative AI, Dayna Grayson, a longtime venture capitalist who five years ago co-founded her own firm, Construct Capital, has been focused on comparatively boring software that can transform industrial sectors. Her mission doesn’t exclude AI, but it also doesn’t depend on it.

    Construct recently led a seed-stage round, for example, for TimberEye, a startup developing vertical workflow software and a data layer that it says can more accurately count and measure logs and, if all goes as planned, help the startup achieve its goal of becoming the marketplace for buying timber. How big could that market be, you might be wondering? According to one estimate, the global forest products industry hit $647 billion in 2021.

    Another Construct deal that sounds less sexy than, say, large language models, is Earth, a startup that’s centered around human composting, turning bodies into “nutrient-rich” soil over a 45-day period. Yes, ick. But also: it’s a smart market to chase. Cremation today accounts for 60% of the market and could account for upwards of 80% of the market in another 10 years. Meanwhile, the cremation process has been likened to the equivalent of a 500-mile car trip; as people focus more and more on “greener” solutions across the board, Earth thinks it can attract a growing number of those customers.

    Dodging some of the AI hype doesn’t completely inoculate Grayson and her co-founder at Construct, Rachel Holt, from many of the same challenges facing their peers, as Grayson told me recently during a Zoom call from Contruct’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. Among their challenges is timing. The pair launched their first three funds amid one of the venture industry’s frothiest markets. Like every other venture firm on the planet, some of their portfolio companies are also wrestling right now with indigestion after raising too much capital. All that said, they’re barreling toward the future and – seemingly successfully – dragging some staid industrial businesses along with them. Excerpts of our recent chat, edited for length, follow.

    You were investing during the pandemic, when companies were raising rounds in very fast succession. How did those rapid-fire rounds impact your portfolio companies?

    The quick news is they didn’t impact too many of our portfolio companies by virtue of the fact that we really deployed the first fund into seed companies – fresh companies that were starting in 2021. Most were getting out of the gate. But [generally] it was exhausting and I don’t think those rounds were a good idea.

    One of your portfolio companies is Veho, a package delivery company that raised a monster Series A round, then an enormous Series B just two months later in early 2022. This year, it laid off 20% of its staff and there have been reports of turnover.

    I actually think Veho is a great example of a company that has managed very well through the economic turbulence over the last year or two. Yes, you could say they had some whipsaws in the financial markets by attracting so much attention and growing so quickly, but they have more than doubled in revenue over the past year or so, and I can’t say enough good things about the management team and how stable the company is. They have been and will remain one of our top brand companies in the portfolio.

    These things never move in a straight line, of course. What’s your view on how involved or not a venture firm should be in the companies that it invests in? That seems somewhat controversial these days.

    With venture capital, we’re not private equity investors, we are not control investors. Sometimes we’re not on the board. But we are in the business of providing value to our companies and being great partners. That means contributing our industry expertise and contributing our networks. But I put us in the category of advisors, we’re not control investors, nor do we plan to be control investors. So it’s really on us to provide the value that our founders need.

    I think there was a time, especially in the pandemic, where VCs advertised that ‘we won’t be overly involved in your company – we’ll be hands off and we’ll let you run your business.’ We’ve actually seen founders eschew that notion and say, ‘We want support.’ They want someone in their corner, helping them and aligning those incentives properly.

    VCs were promising the moon during the pandemic, the market was so frothy. Now it very much seems the power has swung back to VCs and away from founders. What are you seeing, day to day?

    One of the things that hasn’t gone away from the pandemic days of rushing to invest is SAFE notes [‘simple agreement for future equity’ contracts]. I thought when we came back to a more measured investing pace that people would want to go back to investing in equity rounds only – capitalized rounds versus notes.

    Both founders and investors, ourselves included, are open to SAFE notes. What I have noticed is that those notes have gotten ‘fancier,’ including sometimes side letters [which provide certain rights, privileges, and obligations outside of the standard investment document’s terms], so you really have to ask all the details to ensure the cap table isn’t getting overly complicated before [the startup] has [gotten going].

    It’s very tempting, because SAFEs can be closed so quickly, to add on and add on. But take boards, for example; you can have a side letter [with a venture investor] that [states that], ‘Even though this isn’t a capitalized round, we want to be on the board,’ That’s not really what SAFE notes are designed for, so we tell founders, ‘If you’re going to go into all of that company formation stuff, just go ahead and capitalize the round.’

    Construct is focused on “transforming foundational industries that power half the country’s GDP, logistics, manufacturing, mobility, and critical infrastructure.” In some ways, it feels like Andreessen Horowitz has since appropriated this same concept and re-branded it as “American Dynamism.” Do you agree or are these different themes?

    It’s a little bit different. There are certainly ways that we align with their investment thesis. We believe that these foundational industries of the economy – some call them industrial spaces, some call them energy spaces that can incorporate transportation, mobility, supply chain and decentralizing manufacturing – need to become tech industries. We think that if we’re successful, we’ll have a number of companies that are maybe manufacturing software companies, maybe actually manufacturing companies, but they will be valued as tech companies are valued today, with the same revenue multiples and the same EBITDA margins over time. That’s the vision that we’re investing behind.

    We’re starting to see some older industries getting rolled up. A former Nextdoor exec recently raised money for an HVAC roll-up, for example. Do these types of deals interest you?

    There are a number of industries where there are existing players out there and it’s very fragmented, so why not put them all together [in order to see] economies of scale through technology? I think that’s smart, but we’re not investing in older world technology or businesses and then making them modern. We’re more in the camp of introducing de novo technology to these markets. One example is Monaire that we recently invested in. They are in the HVAC space but delivering a new service for monitoring and measuring the health of your HVAC through their low tech sensors and monitoring and measuring service. One of the founders had worked previously in HVAC and the other worked previously at [the home security company] SimpliSafe. We want to back people who understand these spaces — understand the complexities and the history there —  and also understand how to sell into them from a software and technology perspective.
