Infection Free Zone’s early access bugs weigh down its intriguing premise

Infection Free Zone, now in Steam Early Access, has a basic premise: Zombies have taken over the world, driving humanity into underground bunkers to wait the plague out. Eventually, the radio fires up, and a message goes out that the disease is fading. While the surface is still dangerous, it’s time to step up and make an attempt to build a new society.

This isn’t my first rodeo with a game like this, where you have to build a post-apocalyptic society that’s constantly under attack by hordes of zombies. However, this is the first time I’ve done so from the comfort and safety of my own real-world block. Instead of a fictional setting or a careful diorama based on an actual city, Infection Free Zone pulls from map data to create a one-to-one re-creation of cities and towns, using that information to create places for looting and building up a base of operations.

An Infection Free Zone run starts with the player choosing where to begin. The game offers my own region as a starting location, and I even found my own apartment. The map also draws on real-world data to categorize each building. For instance, the walk-in clinic across from my apartment is recognized as a hospital, which made it an ideal starting HQ. My apartment building lacked medical supplies, and its size meant it would be difficult to defend. Meanwhile, I could lock down the clinic easily, and help myself to all that free medicine left behind.

The real-world function of each building factors into how it’s interpreted in Infection Free Zone. Learning about the perks — and downsides — of each building in my area would be necessary if I wanted to survive. From there, I started organizing my population into small squads for scavenging the homes in the area for canned food. We found other survivors and started planting food and building infrastructure.

Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out yet how to escape one of two inevitable fates: turtling until I starve to death, or attracting so many infected to my fledgling settlement that we’re overwhelmed. Perhaps it’s because I live in a humble Canadian neighborhood where guns wouldn’t spawn frequently, but I couldn’t find enough firearms to fend off the endless hordes. You can play anywhere in theory, but in practice you’re going to need to pick a major city for more resources.

There are also other little early access issues that are all individually annoying, but build up to make challenges feel insurmountable. Do you want to renovate a building? You’ll need to clear everyone out first. Want to dedicate time to research? The advancement tree has disappointingly few options, so that doesn’t feel very satisfying. I managed to plant lots of crops in the park near my place, but they stopped producing food. By the time I realized they needed fertilizer, my colony was already on the brink of starvation. Many of these problems aren’t broadcast or explained by the game in any way; I figured them out as I went, and usually died for the trouble. These annoyances go beyond the typical faults of zombie games or base builders; they seem much more related to the game’s early access state.

Plus, seemingly everything requires an endless amount of wood to build, upgrade, or advance. At first, I thought that the easiest way to get wood would be to chop down trees, but found it’s actually more productive to break down buildings in order to also get other materials, such as bricks. However, that turns what seems like an impossible barrier into merely a deeply boring and irritating grind. All those extra materials also fill up my storage, requiring lots of micromanagement. It’s all very awkward, and the threat of the roving undead means I didn’t have much time to focus on solving these issues. Add in constant transmissions and radio chatter, and I walked away from Infection Free Zone irritated.

Instead of fighting against the zombies and feeling them emerge as a natural threat, I felt like the real enemy was the game itself. A base builder zombie survival game like State of Decay 2 can be difficult and terrifying, but I always felt as though my fate was in my own hands. I’d like more agency as an overseer, and more ways for the game to evolve. Right now, my settlement seems doomed to perish from hunger or get overrun by the inevitable hordes.

There’s a lot to iron out, but this is an early access release, and Infection Free Zone has a lot of potential. The ability to choose a real-world neighborhood or rebuild society literally from the comfort of your own home is very cool. I’m intrigued to see if Jutsu Games can turn things around and clean up all the UI issues, early access bugs, and janky systems. There’s something special about surviving the post-apocalypse in my own neighborhood and using my local knowledge to benefit my community of survivors. Alternatively, it’s neat to start a game at the base of a famous landmark and enjoy a little post-apocalyptic tourism. It’s just a shame the rest of the ride is currently so rough.

Emerson St revamp: Penny for your thoughts on the Napier CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The Napier City Council plans to start design work in its proposed Emerson Street CBD revamp early in the New Year, although it is yet to finish the consultation.

The Revitalise Emerson pop-up shop has another week to run at 247 Emerson St, with feedback sought from anyone interested in sharing their thoughts.

It will be the biggest rethink of the shopping centre in the 30 years since it was transformed into a pedestrian shopping precinct, with single-lane vehicle access replacing the two-way traffic, from the days of the main-street drag.

Council’s City Activation lead Steph Kennard said that with some government funding the council is keen to make the most of that opportunity and “do something really cool for the community”.

The work includes gathering data around the movement of people, vehicles and micro-transport options like bikes and scooters, with interviews, observations and video analysis by a local research company.

Meanwhile, the week-long Squares in the City, focused on Clive and Memorial squares, is in full swing and the Napier Night Fiesta series starts its 2023-2024 season on December 8.

- Assassin’s Creed Mirage for PS5 and Xbox Series X is $39.99 (was $49.99). This game recently launched, and beyond being a solid game that has a more reduced scope, it’s hard not to also love its cheaper debut price, which is considerably less than the industry average (and now, even cheaper thanks to Black Friday).
- You can already get $20 off the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 for every platform at Best Buy and Amazon. It costs $39.99 (was $59.99).
- Lords of the Fallen (2024) is $49.99 (was $69.99) for PS5 and Xbox Series X from Best Buy.

- God of War Ragnarök is $34.99 for PS5 at Best Buy and Amazon, easily sailing past the lowest price we’d seen for the game.
- Fire Emblem Engage for the Switch is $34.99 (was $59.99) at Amazon. Building off the incredible Fire Emblem: Three Houses was never going to be easy, but Intelligent Systems delivered the goods in Engage, a game focused more on battle than on relationships.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition for Xbox Series X is just $19.99 (was $39.99) at GameStop.
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is $34.99 (was $69.99) at Best Buy.
- Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged for PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch is $34.99 (was $49.99) at Amazon and Best Buy.
- Octopath Traveler 2 for the PS5 is $29.99 (was $59.99) at GameStop.
- The physical version of Red Dead Redemption for PS4 (also playable on PS5) is $29.99 at Best Buy (was $49.99). In case you’ve always wanted a PS4 disc copy of one of the PS3 era’s defining games, albeit with very few modern updates, you can now buy it. Since launch, Rockstar Games added a 60 frames per second mode you can turn on while playing the game on PS5.
- Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core Reunion, the reimagined version of Square Enix’s tough-to-access PSP title, is $29.99 (was $49.99) at Best Buy and Amazon. It’s available for PS4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The best deal of all is at GameStop, where you can grab it for PlayStation or Xbox for $24.99.
- Super Mega Baseball 4 is $19.99 (was $29.99) at Best Buy. If you like baseball even a little bit, don’t sleep on this title, even if you aren’t particularly sold on its exaggerated art style. SMB delivers baseball that’s easier to pick up and put down than the major sports titles.
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is $34.99 at Best Buy and Amazon. The sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order delivers more of that good stuff in terms of combat, story, and solid character development. Remember: this game will be $30 at Walmart starting on Nov. 22, in case it’s worth it to you to save a couple bucks.
- Wild Hearts is $19.99 (was $49.99) at Best Buy. In this third-person action game, which Polygon’s review described as Monster Hunter meets Death Stranding, you’re getting a huge amount of bang for your buck during Black Friday especially.
- Dead Space for Xbox Series X and PS5 is $34.99 (was $69.99) at Best Buy. Note: this title is currently available on Xbox Game Pass, in case you have a subscription to that.
- Forspoken for PS5 is $19.99 at Amazon (was $69.99)

- All Xbox consoles are $50 off. This includes Xbox Series X consoles at Best Buy, which sell for $449.99 and come with a free $50 gift card. At Target, the Series X is $449.99 and includes a $75 gift card through Nov. 18. GameStop is honoring the same deals, but without gift cards included.

Best entertainment Black Friday deals
- Panasonic’s UB420-K and UB820-K 4K Blu-ray players are widely regarded as some of the best models you can currently buy, and now they’re down to their lowest retail prices. The UB420-K normally costs around $250, but it’s now $197.99 at Amazon (Best Buy is selling it for $199.99).
The higher-end UB820-K is also on sale. In terms of hardware, it’s virtually identical to the 420-K model, except it can display Dolby Vision HDR in addition to other HDR supported by both models. Normally around $500, this model is $349.99 at both Amazon and Best Buy.
- Through Dec. 4, Barnes & Noble is slashing prices on many Criterion Collection movies, including DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K Blu-rays, and even top-tier box sets. When does early access to the Modern Warfare 3 campaign start?

Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t officially launch until Nov. 10, but you can get early access to the campaign up to week beforehand. Hot off the heels of an open beta, it’s your second chance to play part of Modern Warfare 3 earlier than usual — if you’ve paid up, naturally.

Here’s when Modern Warfare 3 early access starts for the campaign, and what time campaign early access starts in your time zone.

How to get MW3 campaign early access

Early access to the Modern Warfare 3 campaign is available to anyone who digitally preorders the game — whether or not it’s the standard edition or the premium “Vault” edition.

What time does early access to MW3 campaign start on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation?

On Windows PC, where Modern Warfare 3 is available via Steam and Battle.net, campaign early access begins at 10 a.m. PT on Thursday, Nov. 2, according to an Activision blog post.

(Update, Nov. 1): Activision clarified in a blog post that Modern Warfare 3 campaign early access will go live on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S at the same time as Windows PC.

Here’s what that is in your time zone:
- 10 a.m. PDT on Nov. 2 for the West Coast of North America
- 1 p.m. EDT on Nov. 2 for the East Coast of North America
- 5 p.m. GMT on Nov. 2 for the U.K.
- 6 a.m. CEST on Nov. 2 for west mainland Europe
- 2 a.m. JST on Nov. 3 for Japan
If you’ve pre-ordered, you’ll be able to preload the Modern Warfare 3 campaign starting at 10 a.m. PT on Nov. 1.

A direct sequel to 2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the campaign for Modern Warfare 3 continues the narrative of Captain John Price’s Task Force 141. Early access gets you the whole campaign, too. Like Starfield, Diablo 4, Mortal Kombat, and more big-budget games, Call of Duty is the latest tentpole to offer divergent release dates. In this case, Nov. 2 is for all intents and purposes the Modern Warfare 3 release date.

Alongside early access to the campaign, Modern Warfare 3 preorders include the Zombie Ghost Operator skin for the game’s multiplayer component, which officially goes live on Nov. 10. If you preorder the pricier Vault Edition, you also get:
- The Soul Harvester Tracer weapon blueprint
- The Nemesis Operator pack
- Two weapon vaults
- The battle pass for season 1, called Blackcell, plus 30 tier skips

Two arrested after two people seriously injured in Wellington CBD crash – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Two people are in hospital, one in a critical condition, and two others have been arrested after a serious crash in Wellington early on Sunday morning.

Police were called to Cable St about 1.15am after a report of a car hitting two pedestrians.

The car then fled the scene, which is across the street from Te Papa Museum.

The two injured pedestrians were transported to hospital – one in a serious condition, and one critical.

“Police immediately commenced area enquiries to find the car and it was located on Evans Bay Parade,” a police spokeswoman said.

“The occupants of the vehicle, a 23-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, were arrested.”

She said charges will be laid in due course and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

The public toilets on Pukuatua St are out of action after a fire early this morning.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said three crews were called to scene, between Tutanekai and Amohia Sts, around 4.45am.

“Crews were called to a small building fire, around 5m by 3m in size. They left the scene about 5.23am,” she said.

Two of the three toilet cubicles are closed this morning.

Ex-early learning center worker charged with abusing students

HAYTI, Mo. (KAIT) – An ex-Missouri early learning center worker is behind bars after police said she was caught on video abusing her students.

According to the Hayti Police Department, on Wednesday, Nov. 2, officers received a report from the Early Learning Center that one of their teachers, 23-year-old Gladys Johnson of Caruthersville, was seen in the video striking, grabbing, choking, and cursing at the students.

A news release stated soon after police were able to confirm the allegations, Johnson was found and arrested.

Johnson is being held at the Pemiscot County Justice Center, charged with abuse or neglect of a child, and serious emotional or physical injury. No bond has been set.

“With the recent passing of my dog Layla, I felt compelled to tell you about our story together.”

“This letter is as much for me as it is to document a life that was so filled with value, love, and lessons about relationships and respect.

I am beyond grateful to have had this amazing dog in my life.”

“Layla was my most challenging pet. She was very different yet I learned so much from her. She made me a much better dog mom, teacher, and human being.

She was our first rescue dog. We adopted her from APA! over 12 years ago on South Congress while we had family visiting for Thanksgiving. She came with the name “Poppy.”

“She came with a bag of medicine and some loving care instructions. She was quite sick and required a great deal of extra attention. She spent the first months of her life in our master bathroom because she was a pretty sick little puppy.

I thought I was not up for the challenge but with phone support and kindness from Dr. Jefferon, and a few wonderful phone counselors, we made it. I am so grateful for the support because I never would have known the amazing experience of truly developing the loving and mutual respect between myself and this wonderful pup.”

“Layla was a different type of dog. I have always had super social dogs – Golden Retrievers and Westies.

They are sweet and pleasing and just want to be with you. They love everyone. Not Layla, she was scared early on and she did not like other dogs so group classes and social events, even walking in heavily populated areas was not for her. She and I learned about each other. I watched her and learned her cues.”

“As an elementary school teacher, I became a better teacher because of Layla. I learned to look for cues and to really watch and learn what she (& my students) needed. I have found there are a lot of Laylas out there. She became my first thought when I had a student that did not get along with others and I stayed patient.

They would be my “Laylas.” I loved her unconditionally and respected her for what she needed and in return, she loved and respected me, even up to the last moment.”

“A few weeks ago, she got very sick and had all the signs of cancer. That last day, one of the hardest days of my life, we went for a ride, her favorite thing to do. I told her how grateful I was to have her in my life and she went for a short walk because that was what she wanted to do. Layla trusted me at the end when I told her to come to lay down on her bed and had a vet put her to sleep on her favorite bed in front of her favorite window.”
