  • You know that movie where the Rock is a Chicken Man? That might be why the WWE star is looking different these days | The Mary Sue

    [ad_1]

With The Smashing Machine drawing closer and closer, a big topic of discussion has been how slim Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has looked on the festival circuit. There’s no question that the leading man is carrying himself a bit differently on this tour for The Smashing Machine. But, it turns out there’s a very surprising reason that he’s trying to slim down.

Straight from The People’s Champion himself, he’s losing weight because he’s about to play a character named the Chicken Man. Yes, it’s almost as bizarre as it sounds! (And even more surprising, it has nothing to do with Hei Hei?)

Benny Safdie is the director of The Smashing Machine, and his next movie is going to star The Rock too! He’s going to be playing Chicken Man in the upcoming Lizard Music. The story of this movie coming together is nothing short of bizarre and Johnson’s involvement just adds a little bit more chaos to the festivities. Still, if the actor was charmed enough by this pitch, who are we to judge?

Lizard Music is a novel written by Daniel Pinkwater. When a lonely boy discovers a secret late night broadcast of lizards playing strange grooves, the door to another world unlocks. Through the looking glass, he finds the “Chicken Man,” and his 70-year-old avian friend Claudia. The odd pair try and find a secret society, but end up forging a bond through their whimsical adventures.

If you thought the strangest role The Rock would ever play was The Tooth Fairy, think again! It’s a wild world out there in the cinemas right now. Who knows, this movie could totally emotionally destroy us?

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is ready to be “Chicken Man”

    (A24)

As you might be aware, The Smashing Machine sees The Rock stepping into the role of MMA legend Mark Kerr. The actor is supremely physically imposing in the new Safdie movie alongside Emily Blunt. He was already a big man, but the trailer for The Smashing Machine really draws how big he is into sharp focus.

But, as soon as they got done filming the awards season contender, Safdie had a very different request from his leading man. During a talk at TIFF Johnson told the assembled press that the children’s movie project was the first thing on his director’s mind after they wrapped. “Benny pitched me this after,” The Rock told the crowd. “And after about 45 minutes, this pitch ended and I said, ‘I am your Chicken Man.’”

It’s all charming, in that way Johnson can still be after all this time. The charisma that made him can’t miss inside of the squared circle is one of the most powerful muscles he’s got. There’s no doubt that this current run with The Smashing Machine is going to restore a little bit of The Rock’s cache as a big-name in Hollywood. But, we’ll all be waiting to see what the Chicken Man is up to in the meantime.

Has anyone approached Hei Hei for comment? I think we should! After all, we’ll see him as the premiere chicken next to The Rock in next year’s live-action Moana.

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shocked fans when he stepped out in Venice, Italy over the weekend.

On Saturday, the 53-year-old actor debuted a noticeably slimmer physique as he attended the Miu Miu Women’s Tales event at the Venice Film Festival ahead of the premiere of his new movie “The Smashing Machine.”

In a video that was taken during the event and later shared on social media, Johnson was seen clad in a light blue short-sleeved button-down silk shirt with a colorful print, which he paired with black pants. “The Fast and Furious” star beamed as he posed for the cameras with his hands in his pockets.

After the post went viral, fans expressed their surprise over the WWE star’s appearance.

“Yep had to do a double take..” one X user commented.

“The Rock slimming down and still owning every room…legendary glow-up unlocked,” another chimed in.

“New look, same legend,” one social media user wrote, while another added, “He looks great”

Fox News Digital has reached out to Johnson’s representatives for comment.

Johnson, who has not commented on his appearance, will play real-life former wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine.” The movie was directed and written by Benny Safdie, and has already generated awards buzz for Johnson.

The “Red Notice” star previously shared that he spent up to four hours in the makeup chair and wore 13 to 14 prosthetics to portray Kerr.

The biographical sports drama also stars Johnson’s “Jungle Cruise” co-star Emily Blunt as Kerr’s then-wife Dawn Staples. “The Smashing Machine” follows Kerr’s rise to UFC glory and his subsequent struggles with opioid addiction and personal demons. The film also chronicles the ups and downs of Kerr’s volatile relationship with Dawn.

On Monday, Johnson along with Blunt, Safdie and Kerr himself, walked the red carpet at the premiere of “The Smashing Machine,” which was held in Sala Grande on the Venice Lido. In a video shared on X, Johnson was seen wiping away tears and clapping as the film received a 15-minute standing ovation. Safdie was also seen crying during the ovation, which was one of the longest since the festival kicked off on Aug. 27.

“The Smashing Machine” also received a nomination for the Golden Lion, the highest prize at the festival.

Ahead of the film’s premiere, Johnson appeared at a press conference for the movie in which he reflected on taking on a very different role after making his name as an action star.

“This transformation was something I was really hungry to do,” Johnson said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “I had been very fortunate to have the career that I’ve had over the years and to make the films that I’ve made, but there was just a voice inside of me, a little voice that said, ‘Well, what if I could do more — I want to do more and what does that look like?’”

Johnson also shared his thoughts on the challenges that actors can face when breaking the cycle of typecasting.

“You chase the box office, and the box office, in our business that we know, is very loud, and it can be very resounding, and it can push you into a category and into a corner,” Johnson noted, via USA Today. “‘This is your lane, and this is what you do, and this is what people want you to be, and this what Hollywood wants you to be.’ I understood that, and I made those movies, and I liked them and they were fun.”

“I just had this burning desire and this voice that was saying, ‘What if? What if there is more? What if I can?’” he continued. “A lot of times it’s harder for us, or at least for me, to know what you’re capable of when you’ve been pigeonholed into something.”

Johnson credited Blunt and Safdie for supporting him, saying their encouragement gave him confidence to take on the part.

“Sometimes it takes people who you love and you respect, like Emily and Benny, to say you can,’” he said.

“The Smashing Machine” will be released in theaters Oct. 3.

While being featured in the museum is an honor and something that will be around forever, the creators clearly dropped the ball when it comes to mimicking the actor/retired wrestler in real life.

One fan took to Instagram and declared that “the choice to put Dwayne in an outfit that screams dad was a bad call” while many pointed out the obvious; the wax figure is completely whitewashed.

Many fans have jokingly given The Rock’s wax figure nicknames like “The Rock from Temu”, Dwayne “The White” Johnson, Dwayne Diesel, Mr. Clean, and many more.

His wax figure has been compared to Pitbull and even his Fast & Furious costar Vin Diesel whom he previously feuded with.

The Rock hasn’t made a statement on the wax figure at the moment but it’ll be interesting to hear his thoughts.

We must say, this isn’t the first bad wax job we’ve seen and certainly not the worst, but the Grevin Museum in Paris could probably learn a lesson or two from Madame Tussauds.

  • Oprah Winfrey, Dwayne Johnson gift $1.6K/month to Maui residents via new fund – National | Globalnews.ca

Oprah Winfrey, Dwayne Johnson gift $1.6K/month to Maui residents via new fund – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Maui residents are still reeling in the aftermath of the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century that swept through the island early this month.

The death count of the wildfire stands at 115, with an unknown number of people still missing. Though the fires have been contained, many residents have no homes to return to. In centuries-old Lahaina, nearly every building in the town of 13,000 was destroyed.

Thousands of Maui residents have signed up for federal aid in the wake of the wildfires, but now, displaced residents have another fund they can tap: the People’s Fund of Maui, created by Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson.

The fund was announced in a video featuring the famed TV host and retired wrestler-turned-actor. Winfrey is a part-time resident of Maui and Johnson spent some of his teenage years growing up in Hawaii.

“We have created the People’s Fund of Maui, that will put money directly in the hands of the people who need it right now,” Winfrey said in the video, standing alongside Johnson.

The fund was launched with an initial US$10-million (over C$13.5 million) donation provided by Winfrey and Johnson, who are calling on others to donate.

Maui residents who lost their homes and are over 18 years of age can apply for aid on the People’s Fund of Maui website, and are eligible to receive US$1,200 (C$1,600) per month in direct funds, “to help them through this period of recovery,” a newswire states.

All applicants have to do is show proof of residence for their lost or uninhabitable home, according to the website. The funds will continue to be distributed each month as long as the money lasts.

“As people around the world watched the catastrophic loss and devastation caused by the Maui wildfires, they also witnessed the great spirit and resilience of our Polynesian culture and the tremendous strength of the people of Maui,” Johnson said. “Even in the most difficult of times, the people of Maui come together, and we rise — that’s what makes us stronger.”

Johnson adds that the People’s Fund of Maui is working with “esteemed community leaders” to ensure that money from the fund goes directly to impacted residents.

He said in the fund’s announcement video that some people who have been looking for ways to help Maui residents may be confused and frustrated about which organizations to support.

“We’re here to ensure with 100 per cent guarantee that your donations will go directly into the hands of Lahaina residents,” Johnson said, adding that it’s a “clean” and “direct” way to get money to displaced Hawaiians.

The idea for the fund came after Winfrey and Johnson were texting each other about how best to support the people of Maui, Winfrey said in the announcement video.

“I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few weeks, asking what they most needed and how I could be of service,” Winfrey said.

“The main thing I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the immense financial burden. The community has come together in so many wonderful ways, and my intention is to support those impacted as they determine what rebuilding looks like for them.”

Maui County has sued the Hawaiian Electric Company, blaming it for starting the wildfires after the utility failed to shut off power during exceptionally high winds and dry conditions.

The utility admitted that its power lines did spark the wildfire on the morning of Aug. 8, saying it “appears to have been caused by power lines that fell in high winds.”

But the Hawaiian Electric Company stated that county firefighters were also at fault for the wildfire after they allegedly declared the initial blaze contained and left the scene, only to have a second wildfire break out that eventually consumed Lahaina.

Richard Fried, a Honolulu lawyer working as co-counsel on Maui County’s lawsuit, said that if their power lines hadn’t caused the initial fire, “this all would be moot.”

“That’s the biggest problem,” Fried said Monday. ‘They can dance around this all they want. But there’s no explanation for that.”

  • Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson makes ‘historic’ 7-figure donation to striking actors – National | Globalnews.ca

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson makes ‘historic’ 7-figure donation to striking actors – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has made a seven-figure donation to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Relief Fund — a contribution the organization says will help support thousands of Hollywood actors currently on strike.

Johnson’s donation came after SAG-AFTRA Foundation president Courtney B. Vance and executive director Cyd Wilson sent a letter asking the union’s highest-earning actors for financial support, according to Variety.

Though the exact amount of Johnson’s seven-figure donation has not been publicly disclosed, Vance said Johnson “stepped up in a major, historic way.”

Wilson estimated the donation from Johnson, 51, is enough to provide financial aid to 7,000 to 10,000 members on strike.

“It’s the largest single donation that we’ve ever received from one individual at one time,” Wilson told Variety. “And what is amazing is that that one cheque is going to help thousands of actors keep food on their table.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Johnson has not commented publicly on his donation.

Performers represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) walked off the job on July 14 to join the already striking Writers Guild of America (WGA). The two strikes have brought most Hollywood productions to a screeching halt.

The SAG-AFTRA union represents about 160,000 Hollywood actors. The union declared its members would strike after negotiators failed to reach a deal with Hollywood’s biggest studios regarding fair pay and improved residuals for actors in today’s streaming age.

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation, a non-profit organization that collaborates with the union but is not a part, will use its Emergency Financial Assistance Program to support actors during the strike. Johnson’s donation will be added to the program.

“When we hit a crisis like this and we’re going to spend millions and millions of dollars in financial assistance, this is when we need our high profile talent who can afford it, who are in a situation to help others,” Wilson said.

    Story continues below advertisement

She said the foundation’s financial assistance provides up to US$1,500 (nearly C$2,000) per individual member, unless there are extreme conditions or health issues, in which case a union member may qualify for up to US$6,000 (about C$7,900).

According to Forbes, Johnson was the fourth highest-paid entertainer in 2022. Though he was the highest-paid actor on the list, Johnson’s 2022 income — reportedly a whopping US$270 million (almost C$356 million) — was only surpassed by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, musician Bruce Springsteen and rapper Jay-Z.

    Your 2023 Grammy Awards Recap

    [ad_1]

For football fans, February 12 marks the Super Bowl. For music fans, February 5 marked their version of the Super Bowl: the 65th annual Grammy Awards. It’s a day where everyone comes together to celebrate their favorite artists…and brutally criticize the Recording Academy’s decisions.

For three and a half arduous hours, the Grammy’s held viewers captive…delaying the Big Four categories until the very end with Trevor Noah monologues, performances by Stevie Wonder, Lizzo, Harry Styles, and an ode to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. But, at the end of the day, history was still made.

Beyoncé, who arrived late after being stuck in traffic, became the most decorated artist in Grammy history, earning her 32nd Grammy award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording. Fans of Beyoncé, however, were outraged when she lost Album of the Year to Harry Styles. This makes it the fourth year where she was nominated for AOTY and lost.

But that’s not all…Kim Petras became the first transgender woman to win a Grammy in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for her song “Unholy” with Sam Smith. The catchy song dominated the Billboard Hot 100, which they also performed in Satanic-chic clothing.

One of the most wholesome moments was Adele accomplishing her lifelong dream. It wasn’t to win another Grammy…but to meet The Rock. After Trevor Noah revealed this fact earlier in the show, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took the stage to present his new best friend, Adele, with the Best Pop Solo Performance award.

Ticketmaster’s worst nightmare and our queen, Taylor Swift, won Best Music Video for “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) (10 Minute Version).” Not only that, but she stood and cheered for every act and winner. Drinking wine and just vibing at the Grammys? My exact vibe.

Lizzo is the first Black woman to win Record of the Year for “About Damn Time” since Whitney Houston for “I Will Always Love You.” She looked equally ecstatic for friend Harry Styles, who won the first and last awards of the night: Best Pop Vocal Album and Album Of The Year, for his album Harry’s House.

The winners of the Big Four categories:

    1. Album of the Year: Harry Styles, Harry’s House
    2. Song of the Year: Bonnie Raitt, “Just Like That”
    3. Record of the Year: Lizzo, “About Damn Time”
    4. Best New Artist: Samara Joy
