“I get it”: The Rock Understands Why You’re Mad That He Asked For Maui Donations

    [ad_1]

When Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Oprah Winfrey announced a fund to support people impacted by the deadly fires in Maui, it’s clear they didn’t expect any backlash for what they viewed as a good deed. But lashed they were, as many argued that by asking the public to contribute to the organization, the monied pair were ducking their own social responsibilities. Over six weeks later, Johnson has addressed the controversy, telling his 389 million-plus Instagram following that he understood why they were angry.

Winfrey and Johnson launched the People’s Fund of Maui in August with $5 million, each, from their own bankrolls. In a video posted to Instagram, they asked for donations from others concerned about the plight of the fire-torn island’s residents, with Winfrey saying “We appreciate all the support that you can give. All these people who were calling me and texting me and messaging me and saying, ‘What do I do? What do I do?’ This is what you do.”

Winfrey, who has an estimated net worth of $2.5 billion, was surprised by what came next, she told CBS a few weeks later. Social media users shot back at the stars almost instantaneously, with scores asking why these extremely wealthy celebrities were asking for donations when they could likely fund the operation out of their own pockets.

“Math ain’t mathing with this one,” one comment beneath their announcement read. “You guys literally have so much money…. You can donate it and make it back within a year.” That remark received 10,000 “likes,” with other critical remarks racking up similar approval.

Speaking with CBS, Winfrey said that Johnson and she “thought, because both of us have given to charities our whole lives, that starting the fund with $10 million would be a great idea. We’ll do what Dolly did,” she said, referring to Dolly Parton‘s donor-backed My People Fund to support those suffering losses in Gatlinburg, Tenn.’s 2017 fires. The pair hoped to “get other people to give money and then we’ll put it directly into people’s bank accounts,” she said.

“So many people were calling, asking, ‘Where do we give our money to?’ So I thought, I’m going to give people a place to give it,” Winfrey said. “And then I got up the next morning, and I saw all of this vitriol, and I was, like, ‘Whoa, what happened here?’”

Johnson, however, remained silent on the backlash, but that changed Saturday. In a video that appears to have been shot poolside by Johnson, himself, the wrestler turned action star (with an estimated net worth of $800 million) first gives an update on the payouts, saying, “The thousands and thousands of survivors, the families, they have now, over the past couple of weeks, started to receive their first round of funds.”

He then turned to the controversy, saying, “When we first launched the fund, there was some backlash … I want to say that I get it, and I completely understand.”

“I could have been better, and next time, I will be better. I understand money ain’t falling out of the sky, and it’s not growing on trees, and there’s a lot of people out there who’s living paycheck to paycheck. And I get it, and I know what that’s like. I’ve lived paycheck to paycheck, seven bucks. I know.”

“And when you are living paycheck to paycheck—I don’t wanna speak for everybody. I’ll speak for myself, but I feel it’s connected. When you’re living paycheck to paycheck…I was easily pissed off, and I was frustrated. And the last thing you want to hear when you are living from paycheck to paycheck is someone asking you for money, especially when the person asking you for money already has a lot of money.”

“So I get it. I understand. I’d never launched a fund before, but I’m a quick study and lesson learned.”

Speaking in September, Winfrey said that “2,200 people have been cleared and verified” to receive money from the fund, and that number is expected to grow. “I still think it’s a really strong idea,” Winfrey said.

“Dolly Parton was right. Putting money directly in the hands of the people is a significant thing.”

Oprah Winfrey, Dwayne Johnson gift $1.6K/month to Maui residents via new fund – National | Globalnews.ca

Maui residents are still reeling in the aftermath of the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century that swept through the island early this month.

The death count of the wildfire stands at 115, with an unknown number of people still missing. Though the fires have been contained, many residents have no homes to return to. In centuries-old Lahaina, nearly every building in the town of 13,000 was destroyed.

Thousands of Maui residents have signed up for federal aid in the wake of the wildfires, but now, displaced residents have another fund they can tap: the People’s Fund of Maui, created by Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson.

The fund was announced in a video featuring the famed TV host and retired wrestler-turned-actor. Winfrey is a part-time resident of Maui and Johnson spent some of his teenage years growing up in Hawaii.

    Story continues below advertisement

“We have created the People’s Fund of Maui, that will put money directly in the hands of the people who need it right now,” Winfrey said in the video, standing alongside Johnson.

The fund was launched with an initial US$10-million (over C$13.5 million) donation provided by Winfrey and Johnson, who are calling on others to donate.

Maui residents who lost their homes and are over 18 years of age can apply for aid on the People’s Fund of Maui website, and are eligible to receive US$1,200 (C$1,600) per month in direct funds, “to help them through this period of recovery,” a newswire states.

All applicants have to do is show proof of residence for their lost or uninhabitable home, according to the website. The funds will continue to be distributed each month as long as the money lasts.

“As people around the world watched the catastrophic loss and devastation caused by the Maui wildfires, they also witnessed the great spirit and resilience of our Polynesian culture and the tremendous strength of the people of Maui,” Johnson said. “Even in the most difficult of times, the people of Maui come together, and we rise — that’s what makes us stronger.”

Johnson adds that the People’s Fund of Maui is working with “esteemed community leaders” to ensure that money from the fund goes directly to impacted residents.

He said in the fund’s announcement video that some people who have been looking for ways to help Maui residents may be confused and frustrated about which organizations to support.

“We’re here to ensure with 100 per cent guarantee that your donations will go directly into the hands of Lahaina residents,” Johnson said, adding that it’s a “clean” and “direct” way to get money to displaced Hawaiians.

The idea for the fund came after Winfrey and Johnson were texting each other about how best to support the people of Maui, Winfrey said in the announcement video.

“I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few weeks, asking what they most needed and how I could be of service,” Winfrey said.

“The main thing I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the immense financial burden. The community has come together in so many wonderful ways, and my intention is to support those impacted as they determine what rebuilding looks like for them.”

Maui County has sued the Hawaiian Electric Company, blaming it for starting the wildfires after the utility failed to shut off power during exceptionally high winds and dry conditions.

The utility admitted that its power lines did spark the wildfire on the morning of Aug. 8, saying it “appears to have been caused by power lines that fell in high winds.”

But the Hawaiian Electric Company stated that county firefighters were also at fault for the wildfire after they allegedly declared the initial blaze contained and left the scene, only to have a second wildfire break out that eventually consumed Lahaina.

Richard Fried, a Honolulu lawyer working as co-counsel on Maui County’s lawsuit, said that if their power lines hadn’t caused the initial fire, “this all would be moot.”

“That’s the biggest problem,” Fried said Monday. ‘They can dance around this all they want. But there’s no explanation for that.”

  • Oprah Winfrey And Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Donate $10 Million To Maui Wildfire Victims

Oprah Winfrey And Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Donate $10 Million To Maui Wildfire Victims

    [ad_1]

The duo launched the People’s Fund of Maui this week and jointly announced Thursday on Instagram that it will put “money directly in the pockets of those who were affected by the recent wildfires.” They kicked things off themselves with a $10 million donation.

“As we have seen firsthand, the impacts of these wildfires have been devastating, and we’re here to ensure with 100% guarantee that your donations will go directly into the hands of Lahaina residents,” the social media post explained.

“Every adult resident who lives in the affected area and was displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula is eligible to receive $1200 per month to help them through this period of recovery,” it continued. “All you have to do is go to PeoplesFundofMaui.org to apply.”

The fires reportedly began after midnight on Aug. 8 and were fueled by strong winds that reportedly pushed the flames along. Up to 1,100 people are still missing in Lahaina, a town of 13,000, which continues to be searched for survivors and human remains.

“As people around the world watched the catastrophic loss and devastation caused by the Maui wildfires, they also witnessed the great spirit and resilience of our Polynesian culture and the tremendous strength of the people of Maui,” said Johnson in a release, per People.

Johnson spent part of his childhood in Hawaii and urged the people of Maui to “stay together” earlier this month. Winfrey, whose own house near Lahaina was spared from the inferno, was apparently inspired to donate help with donations by Dolly Parton.

“The main thing I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the immense financial burden … I read this article that Dolly Parton had given money in her community, and I said, ‘I think this is the answer,’” said Winfrey in Thursday’s news release.

Maui County sued Hawaiian Electric Company last week for alleged negligence and failing to shut down power despite dangerously dry conditions and strong winds before the fires. According to the company’s website, it “serves 95 percent of Hawaii’s 1.4 million residents.”

“Maui County stands alongside the people and communities of Lāhainā and Kula to recover public resource damages and rebuild after these devastating utility-caused fires,” the county assured its residents in an announcement of the lawsuit on Aug. 24.

President Joe Biden recently traveled to Hawaii and vowed to stand by Maui “for as long as it takes” to rebuild and recover. Several locals and House Republicans criticized the president for his slow response and continued focus on the Ukraine war.

Meanwhile, Johnson thanked everyone for their help, prayers and resources in Thursday’s news release. He lauded the “esteemed community leaders” for “offering their guidance” with the People’s Fund and reminded locals of their history:

“Even in the most difficult of times, the people of Maui come together, and we rise — that’s what makes us stronger.”

  • UFC Fighter Themba Gorimbo Reacts To Dwayne Johnson Buying A New House For Him

UFC Fighter Themba Gorimbo Reacts To Dwayne Johnson Buying A New House For Him

    [ad_1]

    By Mekishana Pierre‍ , ETOnline.com.

Themba Gorimbo is feeling incredibly blessed nowadays.

The 32-year-old began making headlines as a breakout up-and-coming UFC welterweight fighter after his first win in the promotion over Takashi Sato in May went viral. The fighter then decided to auction off his fight kit, with the proceeds going to build a bush pump in his village in Zimbabwe and provide clean water for the people there.

When the Zimbabwe native took to Twitter and revealed that he had only $7.49 in his bank account before he traveled to Las Vegas for the fight, he drew the attention of Dwayne Johnson.

“This was the money left I had before the fight and now God granted me a good win and it’s going to be a great one going forward,” Gorimbo wrote on Twitter. “If it wasn’t for the free @ufc meals I started to receive after I signed the fight i would probably be singing a different story. Grateful.”

When ESPN MMA’s official Twitter retweeted Gorimbo’s story, the 51-year-old “Fast & Furious” star responded in a quote tweet, writing, “This is f’n crazy to see and brings back many emotions and memories. $7.49 in this fighter’s bank account. I once had $7 bucks too. I’ve been there on that grind. Got your back, brother. I’ll help. You got this. I’ll be in touch. @TheAnswerMMA #hardestworkersintheroom.”

Longtime fans of the actor will know that Johnson, who has been open about the financial struggles he faced early in his professional wrestling career, once famously lived out of a car with just seven dollars to his name. Now, of course, he’s one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

Johnson even named his company, Seven Bucks Production, to honour his beginnings. He’s produced many of his beloved films and his sitcom, “Young Rock”, through the company.

Speaking with ET’s Nischelle Turner, Gorimbo admits that he didn’t realize Johnson had a similar story to his own, but believes drawing the star’s attention to be more than a bit of luck.

He explains, “My own belief system [is that] God puts everything in place for the greater good for us, you know? Because I’ll tell you the truth, on the day of the fight, that morning, it’s 3 a.m. [and] I woke up, and I was very sick with flu. I realized that if I don’t fight, I will not get paid, and I will go home with no money.”

The fighter recalls thinking that he should use the $87 he had left to take care of himself before his fight. “I ordered all kinds of medicine for me to use so that I can compete [that same day] and it cost me $80 with delivery and everything,” Gorimbo continues. “I was left with $7.49, that’s why I still remember how much money I was left with ’cause I was so scared in the morning [that] I won’t be able to buy food for my teammate and the coaches. And luckily, the coaches came with their own food, and it was just God’s plan. It wasn’t the best of circumstances to get sick, I was supposed to pull out of the fight… but if I pull out of this fight I’ll go home empty-handed and I’ve been [in America] for seven weeks, so it won’t make any sense.”

Screengrabbing his bank account page resulted in one of the biggest blessings — drawing Johnson’s attention.

“[When] I posted about it on Instagram, I [didn’t] think he’d actually respond to the thing,” Gorimbo admits. “I was already back in Zimbabwe then. I’ll be honest when he said, ‘I got your back, brother,’ on the tweets… it didn’t sound real for me.”

On Thursday, Johnson shared a video on social media of him surprising the welterweight fighter with a new home for him and his family in Miami.

In the video, Johnson sneaks up behind him during a sit-down interview. “It’s crazy what can happen when you are able to tell your story, who you can touch and who you can inspire,” Gorimbo says before Johnson walks into his line of sight. Gorimbo jumps up to hug Johnson when he realizes he’s there and then leads the actor around the quarters he’s been staying in. He reveals that he’s been sleeping on a couch as he saves money to bring his family from Zimbabwe and buy them a house.

The “Ballers” star then tells Gorimbo that he wants to take him to “a friend’s house,” but when they reach their destination, the photos of Gorimbo’s family lead to the big surprise.

“Your story moved me,” Johnson tells Gorimbo as he hands him the key to the house. “When I found out you had seven bucks in your bank account, I know what that’s like. I was here in Miami when I had seven bucks.”

Gorimbo promises that he’ll use the money he was saving up for a house to build another well in Zimbabwe. “You inspired me to work hard,” he tells Johnson, falling to his knees before hugging him as he tears up. “I will become a champion, trust me.”

“Now there’s no more couch sleeping, this is your house,” Johnson tells Gorimbo. “Welcome home. This place is yours. You don’t have to think about anything. The only thing you think about is your family, getting them over here, getting them with you, your training and becoming champion.”

Johnson explains that he’ll lease the home and pay for all expenses for as long as Gorimbo wants to live there.

Gorimbo gets emotional thinking back on that day, recalling how Johnson handing him the keys was “the best” part of the day.

“I’m still happy to this day. I didn’t know all the things [that was going to happen] but I even thanked him before,” he shares. “Because you know when you [just] connect with people? That’s how it felt… The energy is kind of different, you know? And I felt the energy in [his] presence.”

Telling ET that he learned exactly how “disciplined” Johnson is as a person, the mixed martial artist says he will be learning from the star’s way of life. “Small things count in life, if you look at them properly. Nothing just blows up in an instant — you cannot just be blowing up in an instant, you know?” he shares. “The small things differentiate everyone from many, you know, and that’s one thing I realized. [Johnson] is very disciplined. He knows that’s probably the reason why he is the way he is, and I’m very grateful that I learned that lesson and I’m gonna take it to heart.”

As for Gorimbo’s family, the fighter shares that they’re just as excited as he is for the blessing they’ve received from Johnson. Usually, the fighter would stay in Miami for months while he’s saving money for a new home, but with their home secured, his family can join him in Miami sooner.

“When I told them that we got the house, we are going to move to Miami and stuff like that, my wife was a little bit crying,” he shares with ET. “And my daughter apparently said, ‘God is blessing us because we have suffered so much.’ And it’s very true… We’ve been struggling in the background… and for her to be saying that, that hits me a little bit as well.”

He goes on, “[But] they’re excited, my daughter is super excited. She’s the most excited, more than everybody, and my wife is nervous. The other one, she’s too little. She does not know anything, all she knows is ‘Dada.’”

Although Gorimbo is used to the changes that come with his life, he notes that his family doesn’t quite know what to expect. “My wife is a little bit nervous, she’s, like, scared of change. She lived her whole life in South Africa and Zimbabwe, so she’s never been on a flight overseas. This will be her first flight overseas!”

As he muses on his turn of fate, Gorimbo cannot help but smile. “Everything worked out well. I’m blessed to be here. I’m blessed to be in this movie,” he says. “Like, I call this life of mine a movie and God is the director and I am the main actor, you know? He made me the main actor and he’s the director of my life, so I’m just grateful and blessed to be in this position.”

How the Hollywood strikes of 1960 and 2023 compare

Superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made a “milestone” seven-figure donation to a relief fund for actors amid their ongoing strike against major Hollywood studios

Following the announcement that thousands of film and television actors in SAG-AFTRA were going on strike beginning July 13, leaders of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation — a nonprofit group associated with the union which provides emergency assistance to members — sent a letter to 2,700 of the union’s highest-earning actors, explaining the financial strains the strike would cause, Variety reported Monday.

Shortly after, Johnson’s team made an undisclosed seven-figure donation to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Emergency Financial Assistance and Disaster Relief Fund, the union confirmed to CBS News Tuesday.

“While the Foundation does not disclose amounts from its donors, we can reconfirm Dwayne Johnson contributed a 7-figure to its charitable Emergency Financial Assistance Program,” a SAG-AFTRA representative said in a statement, calling it the “single largest donation” since the foundation was created in 1985.

For the first time since 1960, both Hollywood actors and writers are on strike simultaneously, a move which has effectively shut down scripted production across the industry. The Screen Actors Guild has more than 160,000 members, although the strike only affects the union’s roughly 65,000 actors.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has made a seven-figure donation to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Relief Fund — a contribution the organization says will help support thousands of Hollywood actors currently on strike.

Johnson’s donation came after SAG-AFTRA Foundation president Courtney B. Vance and executive director Cyd Wilson sent a letter asking the union’s highest-earning actors for financial support, according to Variety.

Though the exact amount of Johnson’s seven-figure donation has not been publicly disclosed, Vance said Johnson “stepped up in a major, historic way.”

Wilson estimated the donation from Johnson, 51, is enough to provide financial aid to 7,000 to 10,000 members on strike.

“It’s the largest single donation that we’ve ever received from one individual at one time,” Wilson told Variety. “And what is amazing is that that one cheque is going to help thousands of actors keep food on their table.”

Johnson has not commented publicly on his donation.

Performers represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) walked off the job on July 14 to join the already striking Writers Guild of America (WGA). The two strikes have brought most Hollywood productions to a screeching halt.

The SAG-AFTRA union represents about 160,000 Hollywood actors. The union declared its members would strike after negotiators failed to reach a deal with Hollywood’s biggest studios regarding fair pay and improved residuals for actors in today’s streaming age.

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation, a non-profit organization that collaborates with the union but is not a part, will use its Emergency Financial Assistance Program to support actors during the strike. Johnson’s donation will be added to the program.

“When we hit a crisis like this and we’re going to spend millions and millions of dollars in financial assistance, this is when we need our high profile talent who can afford it, who are in a situation to help others,” Wilson said.

She said the foundation’s financial assistance provides up to US$1,500 (nearly C$2,000) per individual member, unless there are extreme conditions or health issues, in which case a union member may qualify for up to US$6,000 (about C$7,900).

According to Forbes, Johnson was the fourth highest-paid entertainer in 2022. Though he was the highest-paid actor on the list, Johnson’s 2022 income — reportedly a whopping US$270 million (almost C$356 million) — was only surpassed by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, musician Bruce Springsteen and rapper Jay-Z.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Donates Unprecedented 7 Figures To Striking Actors

    [ad_1]

Actor and retired professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has donated an unprecedented “seven-figure” amount to SAG-AFTRA amid the actors union’s strike, a representative for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation told HuffPost on Monday.

Of the 160,000 SAG-AFTRA members, roughly 2,700 of the union’s highest earners received a letter from the union’s president, Courtney B. Vance, and executive director, Cyd Wilson, detailing the need for financial assistance amid the work stoppage.

Johnson’s seven-figure donation is the largest lump sum the union has received from a single donor since it was founded in 1985, a representative told HuffPost, referring to it as a “milestone.”

The exact amount of Johnson’s donation has not been disclosed. However, Wilson told Variety, which first reported the news on Monday, that the sum will likely help 7,000 to 10,000 members through the union’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program.

“It is a call to arms for all of us to know that we just have to step up however you can,” Vance told Variety. “Dwayne is letting everyone know, ‘I’m here. What are you going to do?’”

A representative for Johnson did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

WWE: Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock to return to the ring with WrestleMania 40?

    [ad_1]

The loyal fans of WWE have been eagerly waiting to witness an electrifying match between Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock and Roman Reigns for the last couple of years. Last year, it was rumoured that The Rock might make a comeback to the ring with WrestleMania 39. However, the plans were cancelled eventually due to Dwayne Johnson’s movie projects and other professional commitments. But, the latest reports suggest that Dwayne Johnson might come back to the ring with WrestleMania 40.

Dwayne Johnson to join WrestleMania 40?

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is hoping to witness the comeback of Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock to the ring, at WrestleMania 40. The Wrestling Observer Radio pointed out that The Rock left a “crack in the door” after declining the offer to mark his return to the ring in Los Angeles. “When he turned down this year due to schedule, Dwayne Johnson left a crack in the door open about possibly doing Philadelphia at WrestleMania 40 next year. But that was far from a commitment and certainly nothing anyone should count on happening,” said Dave Meltzer.

    The Rock in WrestleMania

For the unversed, The Rock was last seen in a full-fledged single match, in 2013 at WrestleMania 29, and he lost the match to John Cena. Later, The People’s Champion faced Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32, but the match could not last for more than 6 seconds. Dwayne ‘Rock’ Johnson later did make a small appearance on the 20th Anniversary of SmackDown in 2019. Earlier, it was believed that Johnson might return to the Royal Rumble 2023, win it, and later join WrestleMania 39. However, the reports later turned out to be false.

Disney is bringing back “Moana”, and you’re welcome.

Dwayne Johnson made the announcement on Monday with a video filmed from scenic Hawaii.

He began, “The Pacific Islands and their cultures inspired a very special story, and that story is…”

“‘Moana’!” his two daughters chimed in to help their father.

“We are so excited and happy to announce that a live-action reimagining of ‘Moana’ is in the works,” he announced.

He also shared the announcement to Twitter.

The reveal comes ahead of the release of “The Little Mermaid”, the latest live-action adaptation of a Disney classic for the studio. The film is set for release on May 26.

Other titles that have already received the live-action treatment include 2015’s “Cinderella”, 2020’s “Mulan”, 2017’s “Beauty and The Beast”, 2019’s “Aladdin” and 2019’s “The Lion King” among numerous others.

The “Moana” adaptation would be the most recent film to receive a remake, considering the original 3D movie was released in 2016.

Johnson will return in the role of Maui, as well as the original screenplay writer, Jared Bush.

The film will be a joint production with the actor’s Seven Bucks Productions.

“This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength,” said Johnson. “I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.”

It’s unclear whether Auli’i Cravalho will reprise her role as the titular character, but she will executive produce with Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.

“She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses,” Cravalho said. “Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring—to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way.”

  • Dwayne Johnson Gets The Perfect Makeover From Daughters In Hilarious Video

Dwayne Johnson Gets The Perfect Makeover From Daughters In Hilarious Video

    [ad_1]

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s daughters may have careers in cosmetology in their futures.

On Friday, the “Black Adam” actor posted a video on Instagram of two of his daughters giving him quite the makeover. The video shows Johnson’s little ones, Jasmine, 7, and Tiana, 4, having a blast putting lipstick all over their father’s head — and showing no signs of slowing down. (Check out the sweet video here.)

“I don’t need more makeup, I think I’m good,” he says at one point in the video in a hilarious — yet unsuccessful — attempt to put the makeover session to an end.

He explained in the caption of the Instagram post that he had a Zoom meeting scheduled before the makeover began but that he ultimately had to cancel it due to his new look courtesy of his daughters.

“Hey, they’ll be a time down the road when this stuff won’t matter to them anymore, so sign me up – daddy’s in,” he wrote.

Johnson shares Jasmine and Tiana with his wife, singer Lauren Hashian. He is also dad to his adult daughter, WWE wrestler Simone Johnson, whom he shares with ex-wife, film and TV producer Dany Garcia.

Simone Johnson signed with WWE in 2020, making her a fourth-generation WWE athlete. Dwayne Johnson was famously a wrestling superstar after making his WWE debut in the 1990s. His grandfather, Peter Maivia, and father, Rocky “Soul Man” Johnson, are both WWE Hall of Famers.

The actor paid tribute to his oldest daughter in a touching post on Instagram shortly after she signed with WWE.

“Carry our family name proudly, but your road will always be yours to create, earn & own,” he wrote at the time.

Simone Johnson announced her professional wrestling name as Ava Raine in May.

  • Zachary Levi Doesn’t Blame Dwayne Johnson For Axed ‘Black Adam’ Cameo That Could Have Bolstered ‘Shazam 2’ Box Office

Zachary Levi Doesn’t Blame Dwayne Johnson For Axed ‘Black Adam’ Cameo That Could Have Bolstered ‘Shazam 2’ Box Office

    [ad_1]

    By Brent Furdyk.

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” hit theatres on March 17, resulting in a disappointing opening weekend with just $65 million at the worldwide box office — a 43 per cent drop from the first “Shazam” movie.

While there are certainly many reasons behind why the film flopped (an anemic 52 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, for example), a report from TheWrap offers another factor: Dwayne Johnson and his attempt to place his Black Adam and Henry Cavill’s Superman at the centre of the DC Extended Universe.

‘Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’ Crashes At The Box Office With Estimated $30.5 Million Haul

According to TheWrap, “Black Adam” was intended to feature a post-credits sequence featuring Zachary Levi’s “Shazam” character, which would have linked the two movies and, in theory, bolstered the success of “Fury of the Gods”. That sequence, the outlet reports, would have seen Levi’s character recruited for the Justice Society — until Johnson personally “vetoed” the plan.

Instead, the post-credits sequence featured Black Adam receiving a surprise visit from the Man of Steel, with Henry Cavill reprising the role of Superman, with the scene representing Johnson’s intention for future films featuring the two superheroes.

“Dwayne tries to sell himself as bigger than the movie,” a “high-ranking Hollywood executive who asked for anonymity” said of Johnson. “He’s one of the few people who always thinks he’s the most important person in any situation or room.”

    READ MORE:
Dwayne Johnson On Henry Cavill Leaving DC After ‘Black Adam’ Brought Back Superman

The report alleges that then-DC Films head Walter Hamada vetoed bringing Cavill in for the cameo, “but Johnson went over his head and got approval from Warner Bros. Film Group co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy,” noted TheWrap.

“Instead of making a movie, he wants to extend his brand and make a brand centred on himself,” said the unnamed executive.

In addition, a post Johnson wrote on Instagram declaring that “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change” was meant to imply that Black Adam was now at the top of the DCEU alongside Superman — effectively shutting out Levi’s Shazam.

After the DCEU shakeup that placed James Gunn and Peter Safron in the top positions, it was announced the planned “Black Adam” sequel had been scrapped, and the earlier announcement that Cavill was returning as Superman was rescinded.

While reps for Johnson didn’t respond to a request for comment, Levi took to Instagram Stories to comment on a post featuring key points from TheWrap‘s report, seemingly confirming its accuracy by writing, “The truth shall set you free.”

After Levi’s social media made headlines, the actor appeared on Instagram Live on Thursday, March 23 and attempted to clarify his intentions.

“I may or may not have, you know, reposted something in my Stories about a story that I had nothing to do with that [The Wrap] had reported on, and then I got flack about it because people were saying, ‘Oh, What are you doing? You’re trying to blame this guy because your movie’s not doing well. Like you’re trying to blame us,’” Levi said, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

“Listen, I haven’t blamed anybody. There’s not one single person that I have blamed for anything about the way that our movie has performed,” he continued.

“The reason I decided to share that was not because I wanna blame anybody for anything,” Levi added. “It’s because I do not want to be blamed for things that are not on me. And as a leader, and I believe, a protector of my family, my Shazam-ly and everyone who worked so hard on these movies … we have been doing everything we can to fight for you, the fans.”

The actor also revealed that he’d fought to have Cavill make a cameo in the first “Shazam!” movie, but was shot down.

“That was not on us. That was not because we didn’t want that to happen for you. […] I wanted him so bad in the first movie,” he shared.

Levi went on to outline the post-credits sequence that was initially planned for “Black Adam”, which would have tied Shazam to the Justice Society.

“The original intent was to have Hawkman and Cyclone be there to invite me… by the way, this is a little bit of a spoiler alert for anybody who hasn’t seen the movie. Sorry, whatever, it’s all online anyway. So, our intent, our desire — Walter Hamada, Peter Safran, David Sandberg, myself, everybody — we had an awesome scene that would have tied me in to the JSA with Hawkman and with Cyclone, and we were thwarted,” he explained.

Levi concluded by reiterating that he wasn’t trying to assign blame for the tepid performance of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, but simply wanted to be transparent about what took place.

“I’m coming to the defence of truth because truth is good,” Levi said. “We should all live in it guys, even when it’s hard, even when it’s something that might fly in the face of something that we already might have believed before and now it challenges whatever our idea or our opinion is. We need to live in the truth.”

Dwayne Johnson Shares Update On Mom’s Health Following Her Scary Car Crash (Exclusive)

    [ad_1]

    By Miguel A. Melendez‍, ETOnline.com.

Dwayne Johnson says his mother, Ata Johnson, is well on the mend following her scary car crash last week, which the actor said did very little to break her spirit.

Speaking to ET’s Nischelle Turner on the red carpet for the 2023 GRAMMY Awards in Los Angeles, the action star said “she’s doing good,” while also offering what went through his mind when he got the call.

“It was 3 a.m. when I got that phone call. You know when my phone rings at 3 a.m. and it’s a family member, it’s not good,” he tells ET.

Johnson shared a photo of his mom’s Cadillac Escalade, which had significant damage on the front-passenger side. In his caption, Johnson said his mom’s OK and that “angels of mercy watched over my mom.”

“She’ll survive and continue to get evaluated,” he continued in the caption. “This woman has survived lung cancer, tough marriage, head on collision with a drunk driver and attempted suicide. She’s a survivor, in ways that make angels and miracles real.”

He continued, “I got one parent left, so if you still got your mom and dad make sure you hug ‘em hard, [because] you never know when you’ll get that 3am call we never want to get.”

The Black Adam star, who attended music’s biggest night with wife Lauren Hashian, said that, despite the scary experience, his mom kept true to herself. He tells ET that, following the crash, his mom was on the phone with him telling him about what had just happened. At that moment, Johnson says he asked his mom if he could speak with paramedics, and it turns out he didn’t really need to introduce himself. Mom had taken care of that.

“I say, ‘This is Dwayne Johnson’ and the paramedic says, ‘Oh, I know. She’s been telling us she’s The Rock’s mom,” Johnson quipped.

Johnson, who made his rap debut in October 2021, was also asked if there’s more music coming down the pike. The short answer? Yes!

“It might be coming down the line, I’ll just tell you that,” he said.

  • Dwayne Johnson Reportedly Refused ‘Shazam 2’ Cameo

Dwayne Johnson Reportedly Refused ‘Shazam 2’ Cameo

    [ad_1]

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who’s recently taken on the role of DC Comics anti-hero Black Adam, reportedly turned down a cameo in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It seems like a strange choice, especially since most fans know of Black Adam through his connection to Shazam. Black Adam is frequently featured as one of Shazam’s biggest antagonists. Black Adam itself, released on October 21, 2022, introduced the character to the larger moviegoing world, as well as established the Justice Society Of America.

In the wake of all the turmoil going on at DC right now, after it was announced that James Gunn would take over as the new co-CEO of the studio, it would appear that a few growing pains are going to be unavoidable. First off, Henry Cavill was featured as Superman in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, despite the fact that the new DC won’t be using Cavill in the role. The second is that according to a tweet from a writer over at TheWrap, Dwayne Johnson was asked to cameo in Shazam 2, only to turn the opportunity down.

It’s complicated to decipher what exactly happened here. There are rumors that Johnson disliked the first Shazam movie, and there’s also some talk about what the future looks like for Black Adam. In multiple social media posts and press releases, Johnson has really tried to hype the film up, calling it the next big thing for DC. Unfortunately, the movie really didn’t do very well at all, with some even calling it a box office bomb.

As of now, the future is uncertain for Black Adam. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled to open in theaters on March 17, 2023.

“Being in such a specific pigeonhole right now, it’s very strange,” Pattinson told Vanity Fair in 2011, a person couldn’t swing a vampiric baseball bat without hitting a Team Edward shirt. “Having a persona people recognize, it’s the thing that probably gets you paid the most—but it’s also the thing that virtually every actor in the world doesn’t want. ’Cause, like, no one would believe me if I wanted to play something ultra-realistic, like a gangster or something.”

In the decade since Twilight’s final installment, Pattinson worked to prove just the opposite and undo his teen heartthrob status, trading mainstream fare for challenging roles in films from David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, Claire Denis, and Nolan. And yes, he even got to play that “ultra-realistic” gangster in 2017’s Good Time, a hard-boiled thriller directed by Benny and Josh Safdie. Pattinson’s blockbuster origins and recent indie presence collided for his weirder, more detached take on Bruce Wayne in The Batman earlier this year.

Nearly two decades before Johnson was considered a presidential contender, not to mention one of the biggest stars in the world, it was unclear if he would even be taken seriously as an actor. He was credited only as The Rock, his professional wrestling name, for his first several films, including The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. At times, Hollywood struggled with which space to slot Johnson into—testing him as a family-friendly lead in The Game Plan and Tooth Fairy and brawny supporting player in comedies like Get Smart and The Other Guys. But it was his casting in the Fast & Furious franchise as Hobbs, a character he’s played in five films and a spin-off, that first truly tapped into Johnson’s built-in action-star charisma.

At the time, Johnson says he reinvisioned his career around fellow heartthrobs turned movie stars like Will Smith and George Clooney. “I said, ‘Those are the guys who are on top. And I don’t know how, but I feel like if we can all go shoulder to shoulder on this, I feel like there’s a pathway to that kind of success, only different and maybe better or bigger,’” he told Vanity Fair. With box office smashes such as Jumanji, San Andreas, and the recently released Black Adam, it appears that Johnson’s vision has been realized to the tune of $430.4 million in box office receipts in recent years.

The artist was the musical guest on the most recent episode of “SNL” and apparently ran into Johnson backstage. Questlove alleged that the two then had a friendly bet.

Apparently the challenge was not without stakes because SZA involved the New York Times reporter in the bet.
