    Questions have been raised in response to the United Airlines 777-200-Extended Range jet, flight 803’s fuel dump and why the pilots were forced to do it.

    An expert said the weight of the fuel would’ve made the emergency landing more dangerous.

    “Airplanes are designed to take off with lots of fuel in the wings. But then, it couldn’t immediately land with that same amount of fuel,” said aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti.

    To get to Japan, the Dulles to Tokyo bound Triple Seven plane would have been airborne for more than 14 hours and it would have burned upwards of 250,000 pounds of jet fuel on the flight.

    “That’s why this plane was delayed for an hour. It needed to fly for a bit, and it needed to dump that fuel,” Guzzetti said.

    That’s what the United crew did. They flew for about an hour releasing the fuel at a higher altitude as a mist, so it can be absorbed into the atmosphere.

    “The airplane has a system where it can jettison fuel into like a spray,” he said. “That allows the fuel to leave the airplane, preferably at a high altitude to lighten it, so when it comes back to land there is no structural damage from an overweight airplane.”

    Studies by both the FAA and Environmental Protection Agency state that since fuel dumping is a rare occurrence, it doesn’t have a serious environmental impact. 

    United Flight 803 landed safely at Dulles Airport where it had taken off an hour earlier.

    The Department of Transportation and Dulles Airport said the engine malfunction sparked a brush fire that was put out by firefighters.

    No one was injured. The passengers were later rebooked on other flights.

  • Virginia’s health department investigates another measles exposure at Dulles Airport – WTOP News

    The Virginia Department of Health has been notified of a confirmed case of measles at Dulles International Airport on Aug. 12.

    The Virginia Department of Health has been notified of a confirmed case of measles at Dulles International Airport on Aug. 12.

    The patient is from another state, the VDH said in a Tuesday news release.

    Health officials are coordinating an effort to identify people who might have been exposed, including contacting potentially exposed passengers on specific flights.

    Listed below is the date, time and location of the potential exposure site:

    Dulles International Airport (IAD) on Tuesday, Aug. 12: in the main terminal, at the TSA security checkpoint, in Concourse B, and on transportation from the main terminal to Concourse B between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

    The potential exposure is one of several involving travelers through Virginia this year. The state has also seen three confirmed cases among Virginia residents.

    Measles is a highly contagious illness that can spread easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, according to the VDH. Measles symptoms usually appear in two stages. In the first stage, most people have a fever of greater than 101 degrees, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a cough.

    The early symptoms usually start seven to 14 days after being exposed. The second stage starts three to five days after symptoms start, when a rash begins to appear on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. People with measles are contagious from four days before the rash appears through four days after the rash appeared.

    A group of House Republicans wants to rename a prominent Washington, DC area airport after former President Donald Trump.

    So just reimagine Washington Dulles International Airport as the ‘Donald Trump International Airport.’

    ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport’

    The effort is being led by House Majority Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler. His bill would put Trump’s name on Washington Dulles International Airport.

    From Townhall, “The brief bill text — if it makes it through the rest of the legislative machinations of D.C. — would make the name change official and require “[a]ny reference in any law, regulation, map, document, paper, or other record of the United States” to IAD “considered a reference to the Donald J. Trump International Airport.”

    Reschenthaler explained his reasoning behind the bill in an interview with Fox News.

    “In my lifetime, our nation has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump. As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil.”

    The legislation is co-sponsored by House Republicans Reps. Michael Waltz, Andy Ogles, Chuck Fleishmann, Paul Gosar, Barry Moore and Troy Nehls. It was introduced on March 29.

    When ‘National’ Airport Became ‘Ronald Reagan’

    There is obviously precedent for this as many airports are named after presidents, but in the Washington, DC area, the major airport known as “Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport” used to just be “National.”

    The name change came due to efforts by Republican lawmakers in 1998. It was pushed originally by conservative activist Grover Norquist.

    Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott said at the time, “I think history will show clearly he is one of the two greatest Presidents of this century, and in my opinion, the greatest by far. This is a President, as you would expect from Ronald Reagan, who is sort of riding off into the sunset.” 

    The name change was a gift to former President Reagan on his 87th birthday. That change was as controversial at the time as any attempt to rename Dulles airport for the 45th president is sure to be.

    But might Donald Trump soon get the same honor as Ronald Reagan?
