    Recently we were out with friends and my longtime friend, Melissa ordered this very drink and I immediately regretted the beer I had ordered. She graciously gave me a sip and afterwards, I ordered my own. And I’ve been making them at home ever since.

    It’s the perfect cocktail to sip while reading a book or watching your favorite show or movie. I love the combination of the almond-y flavor with the ginger and the hint of cherry as well as the simplicity of this drink.

  • Cocktail history as a comic: Author talks about his new graphic nonfiction book

    New York-based cocktail historian David Wondrich had most recently finished editing an 860-plus-page compendium of knowledge about cocktail history when the opportunity arose to share cocktail history through a different medium: as a graphic nonfiction book.

    The author took on the challenge, teaming up with illustrator Dean Kotz to take readers on a journey around the world, following the world’s drinking preferences from Colonial-era punches to Prohibition, from the rise of the 1930s tiki trend to the modern-day craft cocktail movement and beyond — plus much more along the way, including an array of cocktail recipes. We recently caught up with Wondrich to learn more.

  • These 11 Bay Area pop-up bars serve up festive cheer this holiday season

    The winter holidays are nearly here, which means it’s a great time to gather with friends and family for some festive celebratory drinks. But where to go? If cozy kitsch, the glow of Christmas lights and an abundance of tinsel are your vibe, head for one of these 11 pop-up holiday cocktail bars around the Bay Area.

    Sippin’ Santa and Miracle — two pop-up bar organizers — work with existing bars to offer their seasonal cocktail menus. The Sippin’ Santa concept is generally more tropical and tiki-drink focused, while the Miracle bars also offer professionally developed cocktails “and the nostalgic energy of the best office party you’ve ever been to.”

    Originally launched in 2014 in New York City, the Miracle pop-up has grown since then, and now brings its seasonal pop-ups worldwide, according to its website. Meanwhile, the first Sippin’ Santa started in 2015 in New York City and has since expanded to over 60 locations across North America, especially following the creation of a 2018 partnership with tiki connoisseur, writer and bar owner Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. Generally, the menus are the same across the different locations for each concept, and each has a number of collectible cocktail mugs as well.

    There are five of each concept open now or very soon around the Bay Area.

    The government shutdown can hit you in an unexpected way – alcohol and cannabis

    A federal shutdown doesn’t just pause bureaucracy—it can have real consequences for workplace safety and public health. In fact, OSHA closed can effect alcohol and cannabis. When the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suspends inspections, outreach, and compliance programs, everyday jobs, healthcare facilities, and even the marijuana industry feel the impact. With the industry already fragile waiting for some nod from the federal government, this impacts thousands of mom and pop businesses and millions of consumers.

    During a government funding lapse, OSHA halts nonessential functions like guidance, education, and most inspections. Critical operations—investigating imminent dangers, workplace fatalities, and serious violations—continue, but many routine safety checks slow or stop entirely. This slowdown can allow hazards in workplaces to persist, increasing risk for employees and the public.

    Even after the shutdown ends, backlogs in enforcement and inspections can take weeks or months to resolve. Employers are still legally responsible for meeting safety standards, but with limited federal oversight, unsafe practices may go unchecked longer than usual.

    Employees in high-risk industries—construction, manufacturing, and chemical plants—may experience delays in OSHA investigations or reporting. Workers could hesitate to report unsafe conditions because complaint processing and whistleblower protections are slowed. For businesses, abatement schedules, contest periods, and enforcement deadlines continue ticking, creating confusion and risk when OSHA staff are absent.

    Food, alcohol, and beverage operations feel the impact. OSHA standards cover kitchen and bar ventilation, hot equipment handling, chemical cleaners, and safe storage of liquids. When inspections are paused, restaurants, breweries, distilleries, and beverage production facilities may be more prone to burns, slips, and chemical exposure. These lapses can compromise not only employee safety but also public health.

    While it may seem surprising, the cannabis industry is increasingly under OSHA’s watch. Local Emphasis Programs target cultivation, processing, extraction, and retail operations. Cannabis workplaces face unique hazards: dust exposure, mold, flammable solvents, and intensive ventilation systems.

    One reported case involved an employee at a cannabis packaging facility who died from respiratory complications caused by ground cannabis dust. OSHA also cited Massachusetts cannabis licensees for failing to treat cannabis dust as a hazardous chemical under its Hazard Communication Standard. When OSHA’s broader operations slow, enforcement and investigations in these sensitive workplaces can be delayed, allowing unsafe conditions to linger.

    Healthcare workers face heightened risks during an OSHA shutdown. Hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities rely on OSHA guidance for infection control, chemical safety, and ergonomics. Without inspections, unsafe conditions such as improper handling of hazardous medications or unsafe patient lifting practices may persist, putting both staff and patients at risk.

    An OSHA shutdown is more than a bureaucratic pause—it affects workplace safety across industries from healthcare to food, beverage, and the cannabis sector. Real lives are at stake, and consumers may unknowingly encounter risk in workplaces that go unchecked. Whether you’re working in a hospital, a brewery, a dispensary, or buying products from these sectors, the effects of paused federal oversight are closer than you think.

    Ouisie’s Table, 3939 San Felipe, is serving up a weekly series of imaginative game dinners, offering everything from venison and fowl to elk, now through November 26. Each week brings a new off-menu prix-fixe special, like Seared 5 Spice Duck Breast with black currant sauce, Venison Backstrap Chicken Fried Steak, and Braised Wild North American Elk Osso Buco, with suggested wine pairings available for an additional cost. 

    On Saturday, October 12, honor Filipino American heritage with a special full-day Filipino American History Month Celebration at POST Houston, 401 Franklin, from noon to 9 p.m. Folks can enjoy a bustling marketplace of Filipino vendors, traditional cuisine, live performances and more. 

    State Fare Kitchen and Bar, 947 Gessner, 15930 City Walk, 1900 Hughes Landing, celebrates fall with a three-course Saint Arnold beer pairing dinner, offered from October 13–31. For $55, enjoy dishes like Cocoa-Chili Braised Short Rib, Brown Butter Pierogi and Texas Pecan Tart, each paired with Saint Arnold seasonal brews including its iconic Pumpkinator. 

    On Wednesday, October 15, highly anticipated Energy Corridor concept Kirkwood is teaming up with The Lymbar for an exclusive multi-course wine dinner featuring the wines of DAOU Vineyard. The special evening will be held at The Lymbar, 4201 Main, beginning with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the wine-paired dinner at 6:30. Highlights include a decadent Lobster Ballotine, richly layered Braised Short Rib and a trio of sweet and savory bites, including Sticky Toffee Pudding and Roquefort blue cheese. Tickets are $110 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

    Lyric Market, 411 Smith, has a series of events in its fall lineup, including Cocktails For A Cause on Wednesday, October 15, featuring a special Happy Hour and Silent Auction in partnership with the Lupus Foundation of America – Texas Gulf Coast; a Sip & Bloom Floral Workshop on Thursday, October 16; the Tastes & Treasures Pop-Up Artisan Market (Halloween Edition) on Friday, October 18;  Ravioli Making Class on Thursday, October 23; and more.

    Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen, 1743 Post Oak, teams up with Houston’s innovative opera company HOPERA for Divas at the Deli, an evening of food, song and laughter for one-night-only on Saturday, October 18. The 6:30 p.m. dinner features a buffet of East European favorites like Beef Mouton Rothchild, Chicken Breast with Cherry Roman Sauce and Snapper Isabelle, plus Kenny & Ziggy’s legendary cheesecake for dessert. While you dine, HOPERA co-founder Brennan Blankenship and contralto Davia Bouley perform famous operatic arias with live musical accompaniment.
