Dr Punam shares cancer diagnosis
Posting on Instagram, she shared: āHere goes⦠Five months ago, I heard the words nobody ever wants to hear: You have cancer. I still find it hard to write that sentence. But itās my reality and my truth.
āIāve spent almost two decades as a doctor, supporting patients and families through difficult diagnoses. And yet, nothing ā absolutely nothing ā prepares you for being on the receiving end yourself. The shock. The fear. The trauma. In that moment, knowledge means very little.
āI was diagnosed with breast cancer.ā
She continued: āSince then, Iāve taken things one day at a time because thatās all I could do. Iāve been incredibly fortunate to be cared for by the most extraordinary NHS team, from my GP through to my breast and oncology teams. And still⦠itās been really hard. Much harder than I ever imagined.ā
Dr Punam then revealed why sheās kept the diagnosis to herself for so long. āIāve kept this private while going through treatment, trying to protect my energy and most of all ā my children.ā
Dr Punam has two children ā son Aarish, 12, and daughter Ellora, five.
āMy husband, my family and a small circle of friends have carried me through in ways Iāll never forget. When something like this happens, you realise very quickly what ā and who ā truly matters.ā
āEarly detection saved my lifeā
The GP then shared news about the end of her treatment. She said: āIāve now completed treatment and Iām healing. Grateful. Relieved. Still shaken. All of those things can exist at once.
āIām sharing this now because carrying it quietly has been heavy. Because Iāve always believed in honesty. And because life rarely looks like the highlight reel, even when it seems that way from the outside.ā
She added: āCancer doesnāt discriminate. I had no family history. I was well. Iām a doctor. And yet ā here I am. What Iāve learned most is this: early detection saves lives. It saved mine.ā
Dr Punam then revealed how she came to be diagnosed. āMy story began with an unusual feeling ā a gut instinct. Listening to it mattered. Please know your body. Trust yourself. And act early if something doesnāt feel right.
āThis experience has changed me. Itās taken me to very dark places mentally ā conversations about your own mortality will do that. But itās also stripped life back to what truly matters. Your health is everything. Not work. Not possessions. Not perfection.ā
She then concluded: āI have so much more to share when Iām ready. For now, thank you for being here and for holding space with such kindness.ā
