    Dom Dolla and Tove Lo’s “Cave”: A Vampire’s Anthem in Time For Spooky Season

    Still fresh off bringing the heat from her EP of the same name, Tove Lo has nonetheless graced her fandom with yet another danceable ditty. This time, one that’s seasonally appropriate—a.k.a. “spooky.” After all, what could be more ominous than a cave (especially at night)? Except, in this instance, the word refers to “succumbing.” In other words, “caving in” to something…or, more precisely, someone.

    With the help of DJ and producer Dom Dolla, the frenetic backbeat of the song lends urgency to Tove’s simultaneous resistance to and gravitational pull toward the object of her affection. And to establish the tone for the moody ambience of the single, Dom Dolla and Tove set their video, directed by Grant Spanier, in the darkness of some creepy woods (but then, all woods are creepy, whether it’s dark or not). Driving through them at exactly 3:33 a.m.—because the time 6:66 doesn’t exist—a shot of Tove coolly wearing her sunglasses at night in the front seat is the first indication that this is a vampire story. That and, well, bats live in caves, so the song title is more than a slight “Easter egg.”

    As for the driver, Dom, he needs no sunglasses, wearing only his baseball hat as a shield for his eyes from the night. It’s then that Tove opens the track with the ethereal, hyper-romantic verse, “I’ve got this hunger/Are you alone?/Make me feel better/Fuck to our song/I can feel my walls coming down/Late at night when I fade/You can cut me deep with a line/Like a cold sharp blade.” While it might initially be presumed that the pair is each already a vampire on the prowl, we soon see there’s more to the narrative than that.

    So it is that, jostling around in what Tove calls a “buggy thing,” the two roll up to what looks like an abandoned warehouse where an underground rave is in progress. Albeit one that is in rather scant attendance. Even so, the red lasers flitting around the room almost make up for the fact that this is a vampire rave, as the attendees’ pointy ears immediately indicate (less cliché than a baring of fangs, to be sure). It is at this moment that Tove and Dom pull out their crossbows—suggesting they’re vampire hunters and not yet vampires (maybe this is why Tove is dressed like she got inspired by The Matrix)—and aim to kill…or at least tranquilize.

    Alas, their dart is easily caught by one of the vampires, prompting the two to look at one another in horror as the subtitle “run.” shows up at the bottom of the screen for a touch of silent movie cachet (after all, Nosferatu is one of the most classic silent and vampire movies of all time).

    Having poked the bear—or rather, vampire—Dom and Tove flee the scene back into the woods, with many subsequent shots channeling The Blair Witch Project thanks to unsteady handheld camera work and plenty of scenes done in “night shot” mode. An overhead shot with the camera going into the woods as though it’s a 3D model also lends an eerie “this is a simulation” quality to the narrative.

    But if it is, it doesn’t make it any less daunting/frightening for Dom and Tove to be “turned.” To have to “cave” to their pursuers by eventually becoming one of them. Hence lyrics like, “I can feel my walls coming down/Late at night I forget/You can make me weak with a line” and “I know all your tricks and you lick your lips ‘cause you know I’m gonna cave/I’m gonna cave/You pull me closer I feel your skin/Memories wash over, I let you in.”

    But not without a fight as Dom and Tove run through the woods during Spanier’s chaotic, intercut scenes of the woods appearing as though turned upside down while he focuses in on the male vampire who then gets the subtitle that warns them, “Game over.” His cohorts also join in pursuit of the duo through trees punctuated by giant cobwebs—as though their method for ensnaring humans is decidedly spidery.

    In the end, we can see that Dom and Tove have, indeed, caved. This indicated by the flashing of vampire fangs (it was bound to happen sooner or later). And also, in Tove’s case, red eyes. The final scene then shows them hanging upside down in what appears to be the very same abandoned warehouse where they first tried to overtake the vampire ravers. But hey, as it is said: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” In other words, surrender Dorothy. Cave.

    With Gov Ball happening this weekend, I couldn’t be more excited to listen to some new tracks…especially since I’ll be hearing some of them being performed live for the first time. Whether you’re preparing for a weekend filled with fun with your friends, or live in the NYC area and are one of the thousands attending Gov Ball, you need a good playlist to get you ready.

    And that’s where I come in. If you’re new here, I make a Weekend Playlist filled with fresh releases hot off the press. It’s the best-of-the-best, so you don’t have to comb through every New Music playlist and search excessively for actual good music released this week.

    Sabrina Carpenter- “Please, Please, Please” 

    Oh, Sabrina Carpenter, how you amaze me. With the announcement of her new album, Short ‘N Sweet, coming August 23 and hot off the success of viral hit “Espresso”…you’d think she’d rest. But no, we’re here with another certified banger: “Please, Please, Please.”

    In the song, Carpenter begs for her lover not to make her cry when her makeup looks so nice. It’s a struggle we’ve all experienced…but of course, Sabrina conveys another message with the song: she’s the next Big Thing in pop music, ushering in the new era of popstars that we so desperately needed.

    Dom Dolla is one of the hottest DJ’s in house music right now. He’s fresh off a few massive Coachella performances, where he played for the likes of Ice Spice, Taylor Swift, and Travis Kelce. His breakout year – 2023 – gave us singles like “Saving Up” and “Eat Your Man (with Nelly Furtado).” And he’s not slowing down any time soon.

    No, Dom Dolla is not even close to reaching the height of his illustrious career…but “girl$” is just another stepping stone to becoming one of the top DJ’s in the world. Fun, sexy, and just enough bass, this house track will be a staple for any pregame playlist of yours.

    ASHRR- “Different Kind Of Life” 

    Supergroup ASHRR delivers a groovy, vibe-heavy song questioning why we’re all searching for some different sort of life…when we’re living the one we’ve got? It’s a message for us to stop looking to others for happiness when we have all the tools on our own.

    “DKOL is about the expression of samsara, the cycle of never being pleased with what you have, but always wanting more or something else. When we went to write this song which started out with the bass line and polyrhythmic drums, we eventually mixed up our love of Afrobeat rhythms from the late 70’s with the post -punk soul dance floor anthems that Frankie Knuckles would be playing at Paradise Garage on a Saturday night.” -ASHRR

    Glass Animals- “A Tear In Space (Airlock)”

    An exploration into the mind and soul lead band member, Dave Bayley, Glass Animals’ newest single is both introspective and otherworldly. Certainly a risk, “A Tear In Space (Airlock)” is unlike your usual Glass Animals sound…however, it works because that’s completely the point.

    Writing and producing their next album after having a breakdown over their newfound success following “Heat Waves”, “A Tear In Space (Airlock)” shows an ethereal side to their music we’ve never seen before.

    SALEKA- “RELEASE”

    SALEKA is quite literally a triple threat. She’s starring in the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan’s newest film, TRAP, a concert thriller following a girl and her father’s nightmare concert experience. Not only that, but she’s releasing a song, “RELEASE”, that’s being featured in the film as well.

    The song is brooding and powerful, a piano-driven ballad that builds with suspense and crescendos into SALEKA’s powerful vibrato.

    ROSIE- “Rock Bottom”

    ROSIE’s music is always empowering in some way- whether that be through lyrics emphasizing self love or moving vocals that make you want to replay her songs over and over. Now, with “Rock Bottom”, she shares a point in her life where she felt like she wasn’t going to make it through…but this song is a reminder that there’s light. She says,

    “‘Rock Bottom,’ explains why I am the person I am today. I’ve overcome many hardships over the years, from grieving the loss of a dear friend, to battling anxiety and depression, and this record recounts it all. More than anything, this song is about finding light within the darkness or as I say in the song, realizing that ‘nothing looks bad when you’ve seen rock bottom.’”

    I hate to say it, but all good people admit when they’re wrong. After attending
    Coachella in 2022, I saw a dying franchise desperately trying to retain its grasp on relevancy. With lackluster Californian crowds who only go for the festival name and not the names headlining, outsiders often wonder why artists treat this as a Mecca for music.

    Long gone are the days when girls’ outfits were chosen with Tumblr shots in mind. The bohemian chic style that Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus, and other attendees made famous began as “Coachella style.”

    And when I got a taste of the coveted festival, I was beyond underwhelmed. Sure, the rich and famous were within reach…but I couldn’t have felt further away from them. I ended up with dust in my lungs and a week’s worth of exhaustion.

    Celebs stopped attending
    en masse, the non-festival influencer events like Revolve Festival rose in popularity, and it became abundantly clear that no one cared about the music…it was all about their Instagram posts.

    But what I’ve learned from live-streaming Coachella 2024 — and pouring over my social media and consuming every single piece of Coachella content there is — is that Coachella is back in a major way.

    Sure, the festival is designed to give you an intense bout of FOMO…but all I kept hearing was how bad everyone thought the lineup was. How no one of note would be in attendance this year. How Coachella was surely done for…until it wasn’t.

    It’s been every bit as star-studded and shocking as earlier years. We’ve had earth-shattering performances, surprises left and right, and even reunions…not to mention the iconic
    American Royal Couple sighting.

    We had 5-star performances from headliners like Tyler, The Creator and Doja Cat. Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo via their supergroup, Anti Up, confirmed rumors of a joint album.

    After spending the weekend across the country on the wrong coast sobbing to my friends that I opted not to go this year, I put together my must-see lineup.

    Here are the five performances I would’ve attended at 2024 Coachella Weekend One.

    Chappell Roan 

    Chappell Roan’s sheer star power has truly been surprising me. With a devout fanbase (just watch her set), you’ll immediately realize that we’re dealing with someone who is about to break through to a different level of stardom.

    During her set, you’ll hear essential songs like “Good Luck, Babe!”, “HOT TO GO!”, and “My Kink is Karma.” But what’s more impressive is her stage presence, the way she commands the crowd in avant-garde makeup, big hair, and a bigger personality.

    Songs like “Good Hurt” saw a 160% increase on Spotify…Don’t sleep on Chappell Roan. Before you know it, she’ll be performing at a much bigger stage.

    Everything Always – John Summit & Dom Dolla 

    Not enough is said about a house music set at a festival. Sure, the headliners are great and deliver us our fix of rock, pop, or soul. But it’s always been the DJ’s who have my heart at the end of the night. They know how to get you dancing, to feel the beat down to your soul, and forget for a while.

    We saw a lot of technical difficulties and underwhelming sets from various artists this weekend…but John Summit and Dom Dolla delivered a borderline flawless collaboration that perfectly exhibited both their greatest hits and EDM essentials.

    There’s nothing better than watching an artist truly having fun on stage…so when two friends, Dolla and Summit, come together to display some of the best techno house out there, they do not disappoint.

    Soon to be the pregame track for many, Dom Dolla and John Summit are two of the biggest names in house for a reason.

    No Doubt 

    Two words: jaw dropped. Coachella’s Main Stage has reunited long lost bands and supergroups like Blink-182 and Swedish House Mafia…but few have No Doubt’s impact.

    After a year of music domination on TikTok, Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal, and Adrian Young took the stage to bring punk rock back in all its glory. In their first performance since 2015, this band has the exact same 1995 energy when they released “Just a Girl.”

    Bringing out Gen Z’s very own punk pop princess, Olivia Rodrigo, was a passing of the torch in many ways. Stefani and Rodrigo belted “Bathwater” side by side as Rodrigo sported low rise cargos and an “I <3 ND” tank. “Bathwater” saw a 430% increase in streams on Spotify following the performance.

    Perhaps the most impressive performance comes from Stefani, who at 54 years of age pranced and throttled around the stage full force. Stefani embodied a whirlwind tornado that gave more stage presence and energy than a 19-year-old. She went full punk rocker mode, and it was gorgeous.

    Sabrina Carpenter

    I keep reminding my readers that Sabrina Carpenter is the one to watch this year. She’s got all the ingredients of your classic popstar: proven vocal talent (even a stint on Broadway with Renee Rapp in Mean Girls), the opener for Taylor Swift’s legendary Era’s Tour, a past love triangle scandal with aforementioned Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett, and the latest It Boy, Barry Keoghan, falling over his feet for her.

    Her Coachella performance only solidified that I’m right. Carpenter understands her audience, and knows how to bring in more fans. She’s candidly witty, overtly sexual in her euphemisms, and yet exudes an innocence and honesty in her music.

    For the first time on a Coachella stage, Carpenter was able to belt out her emails i can’t send album. This tell-all set of songs details her relationship with Bassett, her perspective on the backlash, and shares refreshing insights into her life.

    She had the cinema, the vocal ability, the wow-factor. No notes.

    Lana Del Rey

    And while many prominent publications and, most notably, the Recording Academy will continue to turn their noses towards the genius of Lana Del Rey, the world watched anyway. Del Rey’s music has inspired the careers of thousands of budding artists, and it’s rare that she gets such a massive platform to perform it.

    Arriving via motorcade, Lana Del Rey took the stage to perform hits like “Summertime Sadness”, “Ride”, and “West Coast” while dancers twirled from poles and swirled around Del Rey.

    With guests like Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, and the one-and-only Billie Eilish, Del Rey flawlessly integrated tracks like “Ocean Eyes” and her own “Video Games” into her set.

    Many will criticize the microphone issues or the lack of energy from the crowd (all factors that were out of the headliner’s control)…but it’s overwhelmingly clear from Lana Del Rey’s performance that her star far outshines any technical difficulties.

    Look, concerts are great. I would love to see my entire Spotify Wrapped lineup live. And I’ve spent thousands of dollars on Harry Styles alone — judge me if you want, I don’t plan on stopping. But my wallet isn’t as enthusiastic.

    That’s where the beloved music festival comes in. It’s the best opportunity to see a bunch of artists in the span of a few days. You either love them or you’re not built for them…and I fall somewhere in between.

    A music festival is the equivalent of an appetizer sampler; you get to see some artists you normally wouldn’t spend money on, and you also get some of your classic favorite artists all on the same lineup. For example, I went to Firefly Music Festival to see Billie Eilish…and left loving The Killers.

    Now that the weather is getting warmer and we are increasingly more open to the idea of leaving our homes, festival season is quickly approaching. Coachella, one of the world’s most famous (and potentially overrated) festivals, occurs every year in April and kicks off a slew of fun music festivals to attend.

    The only issue is: how do you choose the best music festival for you? With over 50 festivals listed already this Spring and Summer 2024, it can be hard to choose. I like to check out the lineups and see which festivals have the most new artists for me to discover. Then, I take a look at where they’re happening and make my decision from there.

    I’ve rounded up a few festivals happening in the US in 2024 that are both newsworthy and will get you to see the most relevant artists in the industry. Enjoy the food, the shopping, the arts, and the acts!


    M3F Fest

    Where? Phoenix, Arizona

    When? March 1-2, 2024

    Who? Dominic Fike, Duke Dumont, Hippo Campus, Gorgon City, SG Lewis, Dayglow, DRAMA, and more.

    What? A music festival thrown by non-profit, The M3F Fund, where 100% of proceeds go to charities like Habitat for Humanity, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Arizona Helping Hands, and more. It’s a great way to give back while having fun with your friends and family, and their lineup is always good.

    Where? Indio, California

    When? April 12-14 + 19-21, 2024

    Who? Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator, Doja Cat, Lil Uzi Vert, John Summit, Dom Dolla, Jon Batiste, Bleachers, No Doubt, J Balvin, and more.

    What? The festival where spotting an influencer or two will be the highlight of your trip. You probably won’t make out with Timothee Chalamet, but you definitely will eat some overpriced food. However, you have to go to Coachella once in your life. This year marks the reunion of No Doubt — and perfect timing, since TikTok has revived their music for Gen Z.


    Shaky Knees Music Festival

    Where? Atlanta, Georgia

    When? May 3-5, 2024

    Who? Noah Kahan, Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire, Young the Giant, Girl in Red, and more.

    What? A great mix of indie and rock acts spread throughout the weekend. I would travel far and wide to see Noah Kahan ahead of his summer arena tour, and this is a great excuse to do so.

    What? One of the most diverse music festivals in terms of genre…Hangout Music Festival has everything- from popular EDM acts to country to pop. It’s also one of the few tour dates Lana Del Rey has right now, so go see her while you can.


    Governor’s Ball Music Festival

    Where? Randall’s Island, New York City

    When? June 9-11, 2024

    Who? Post Malone, The Killers, 21 Savage, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA, Peso Pluma, Sexxy Red, Renee Rapp, Labrinth, Goth Babe, and more.

    What? Located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Gov Ball is an iconic festival to start the summer. This year’s lineup is worth your time with festival favorites like The Killers and Post Malone, and exciting additions like Goth Babe and Sabrina Carpenter.


    Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival

    Where? Manchester, Tennessee

    When? June 13-16, 2024

    The Gulf Coast’s premiere music festival is back. Hangout festival has just announced the lineup for its 13th edition taking place on Alabama’s southern coast, a prime spring break destination, May 17-19.

    This year’s lineup showcases the festival’s commitment to diversity as Zach Bryan, Lana Del Rey and ODESZA will be the headliners. The Chainsmokers will be the main dance headliner; other dance acts featured on the lineup include Alison Wonderland, Dom Dolla, Subtronics, a Chromeo DJ set, Daily Bread and a couple of sick b2bs from Odd Mob x OMNOM and VNSSA b2b Nala.

    Again, Hangout features more than dance music. Up and coming young pop artists like Dominic Fike and Reneé Rapp are also among the second line artists. Both old and new vanguards of hip-hop are represented with Nelly and NLE Choppa on the lineup. If you’re more inclined toward guitar-based rock, Cage the Elephant, A Day to Remember and All Time Low also round out the lineup.

    The first couple months of the year are like the offseason for sports. There’s no actual events happening, but there’s all sorts of speculation and waiting for lineups to drop. Although they were early in dropping their Stage 1 lineup, we would be remiss to not mention Sziget Festival taking place in Budapest, Hungary from August 7-12.

    Featuring Fred Again.., Martin Garrix, Sam Smith and Stormzy as headliners, Sziget is one of the premiere European festivals to visit, not just because of its stellar lineup, which ventures outside the dance music realm, but also because of its magical location on Budapest’s Óbuda Island. Other dance music highlights include Four Tet, Richie Hawtin, Dom Dolla and ARTBAT. For non-EDM fans, two names that stand out on the lineup are former One Direction-er Louis Tomlinson and indie-rock faves Big Thief.

    Whether you are ready or not, we are officially in 2024. It’s okay if you’ve already abandoned your overambitious resolutions for more plausible goals — or if you’ve just given up entirely. There’s always next year.

    But if there’s one constant, it’s listening to music. If Spotify Wrapped taught me anything, it’s that I really can make it through anything with the right soundtrack. We’re edging closer to awards season, which means everyone is looking for the best of the best. Our inner critic comes out and, suddenly, we’re all members of the Recording Academy.

    With the 2024 Grammy’s right around the corner, it’s easy to get caught up in the hits from yesteryear. But I’m already looking ahead to the new year of music. And it’s time to recognize artists who are about to have a huge year. Some of them may be familiar names and hopefully, others will become new favorites of yours.

    Regardless, there have been four artists who stuck out to me this past year. These artists aren’t new per se, but they’ve skyrocketed with recent success leading the charts, making an impact on pop culture, and featuring prominently on Spotify playlists. Each artist has been selected because they have the It Factor — and finally everyone is seeing it.

    Here are the four artists to watch in 2024!

    Carpenter fell headfirst into a love triangle scandal alongside pop queen Olivia Rodrigo and her castmate, Joshua Bassett. In 2022, she released her fifth studio album, emails i can’t send, which solidified her as a certified pop songwriter who has every “It” factor you look for in a young starlet.

    Her sound can span genres- with synthy, sexy pop/R&B blends like “bet u wanna” to stomp-and-holler-inspired “Already Over.” Her take on heartache and the increased public scrutiny is both refreshing and witty.

    After opening for Taylor Swift this year and going viral for her “Nonsense” outros, and most recently performing for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, it’s hard to imagine that this is the last we’ll see of Sabrina.

    A favorite here at Popdust, Noah Kahan has perfected that aforementioned “stomp and holler” sound. After a year of country-folk renaissance, Kahan’s Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) deluxe edition released in 2023 and continuously broke records…leading to collaborations with artists like Post Malone, Hozier, Kacey Musgraves, and Lizzy McAlpine.

    With a sold out stadium tour on the horizon, Kahan is skyrocketing. His storytelling through music is unmatched- painting pictures of woeful hometown memories, heartache, loss, anxiety, and more.

    His self-deprecating humor and appreciation for success make Noah Kahan who he is. A longtime advocate for mental health, Kahan started The Busyhead Project to raise money for the cause. He has us in the palm of his hand, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

    Wax Motif and Camden Cox’s new single “In My Hands” is a perfect representation of house music blending with strong vocals, creating a track that people both enjoy listening to…and want to hear again.

    The track was special, which everyone involved in its creation seemed to know because Wax Motif performed it two days after making the song at EDC Las Vegas. It’s a signal of Wax Motif’s newer sound, after attending a writing camp and honing in on his skills, he’s definitely got a darker tone to his signature bass-line emphasis. About EDC Vegas, Wax Motif says,

    “During EDC Vegas I got asked to attend a session with Camden Cox who I had been meaning to work with for a while, and also these two awesome writers Emma Rosen and Sophie Cates. We didn’t really have an idea to start with so we started from scratch. Thought it would be cool to do something pretty dark beat-wise which could make a cool contrast to Camden’s vocals. We finished most of it off that day and I dropped it in my sets a few days later to a really good response. Some final tweaks and here we are with the end result.”

    After releasing a meteoric debut album full of house hits, House of Wax, fans have been waiting to hear what comes next. He has a unique way of spinning house music into a refreshing beat that sounds unlike anything we’ve heard before. But with this new style, we can tell Wax Motif is ever-evolving.     With a promising new era ahead, you can’t help but be excited for the Australian producer whose had support from the likes of Dom Dolla and John Summit…and for good reason, Wax Motif has a special way of taking notes from R&B, disco, and UK bass that makes sense in any song.

    We spoke with Wax Motif on how he’s developed his sound to create “In My Hands”, and what’s next below!

    PD: Your 2022 debut album, House Of Wax, showed your skills at blending a bunch of different genres together. What kind of music and artists influenced you when starting your career?

    It’s a pretty mixed bag but the most influential were probably Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Artful Dodger and a lot of rap like Notorious BIG, 50 Cent / G-Unit, Dr Dre & Snoop, Three 6 Mafia & Lil Wayne

    PD: You’ve been performing a record-setting amount of sold-out shows, which is a testament to your fanbase and talent. Can you tell us what fans can expect from your live performances such as your upcoming Shrine show in Los Angeles?

    I usually try to change up my sets a lot (especially in LA) cos I know I have fans that will come to multiple shows. The core of my set is comprised of my own music and the favorites from my discography that people want to hear and outside of that I try to sprinkle in new music I think is interesting, forward thinking or will resonate with my crowd.

    PD: Your latest single, “In My Hands” with Camden Cox, is out now! It’s debuting a new sound for you…how has your production style evolved since last year?

    I’d say it’s always evolving but lately I’m into darker, harder, faster stuff. I think the best part about producing is constantly doing and trying new things and I also get bored pretty easily which is probably why I never rinsed and repeated a previous sound. In the studio I’m usually on the hunt for sounds and ideas that keep me locked in and I try to not overthink the direction too much. Once I’ve finished a song it goes into either the “maybe” folder or the “for someone else” folder.

    PD: It’s also signaling more collaborations to come. Who would you love to collaborate with most?

    That list is long! For vocalists probably Weeknd, Drake, Lil Wayne, Alina Baraz, Ellie Goulding & more with Camden. Electronic producer wise probably Skrillex, Rufus Du Sol, Tchami, MK & Camelphat.

    PD: You performed the song two days after creating it at EDC Las Vegas’ writing camp. Can you tell us about that experience and were you nervous at all to show it off so quickly?

    No, I wasn’t nervous at all. It is usually how I test most of my unreleased music and the good part about DJing is if something is tanking you can get out of it pretty quickly. If I’m keen to test it out it’s usually a good sign too.

    PD: You’re very into fashion. How do you incorporate that into your music career and what’s one piece of advice you can give to readers?

    I didn’t grow up with a lot of luxuries so in school I was always looking at kids with new Nikes or whatever. It kinda just led to me wanting my own cool stuff when I could afford it. I guess it’s not really a conscious thing to incorporate it into music but I definitely subscribe to the mentality of “looking good equals feeling good”. Advise wise I’d definitely say “save your money” cos music careers come and go quickly but at a certain point you need to start enjoying yourself too so treat yourself once in a while.

    PD: What’s up next for you this year?

    We’re about to finish up the US tour which has been awesome & then finishing the year traveling with some shows in Colombia, The Bahamas, Mexico, Vegas for F1 weekend and Aspen as well as hopefully a lot more studio time.

    When I was younger, I knew of two ways to get music: the legal way, paying $0.99 (and then $1.25) for songs on iTunes, and the illegal way, paying $0 to download the pirated versions on Limewire…Don’t lie, you had your ways, too.

    Maybe I’m aging myself by saying social media wasn’t as prevalent as it was now…you couldn’t just go on Instagram and announce new music. That’s right, you’d have to do things like watch television and pay attention, like when Disney Channel would play music videos instead of commercials. It was prime MTV time, you know that line from Bowling For Soup’s hit song “1985”: “and music still on MTV?” That.

    Essentially, you’d rely on solely on search engines, iTunes, and the radio to get your news. How archaic. Back when “doom scrolling” meant checking your email incessantly for new messages from your friends.

    There was no Spotify or Apple Music to curate special playlists…only writers like me reviewing new tracks (that were often printed on CD’s…gasp). Can you believe we used to burn playlists onto CD’s and listen to them as our parents drove?

    Now, music is more accessible than ever. We have access to any song written ever, essentially. I mean, people are constantly even hacking into celebrity’s iClouds and releasing their unreleased tracks! (It’s not ethical, but you get my point.)

    There is no better time to be a fan of music than this era. Now, with apps like Spotify, you can get a monthly subscription to listen to unlimited, commercial-free music with specially picked playlists geared towards your music taste and access to pre-sales for your favorite artist’s shows. The music world is truly at our fingertips.

    And that’s where I come in! I pick the best music that comes out every Friday across the board so you don’t have to comb through all of the new music playlists and feel lost. If you want your weekend to get a little easier, let’s get listening.

    Noah Kahan, Kacey Musgraves- “She Calls Me Back”

    At this point, Noah Kahan is just completing side quests. Whether it be performing onstage with Hozier, releasing collabs with Post Malone, Lizzy McAlpine, Zach Bryan, or most recently Kacey Musgraves, Noah’s been busy. This week’s newest duet is with Musgraves, who shows the other side of Kahan’s hit song “She Calls Me Back.” Musgraves’ melodic voice adds the perfect touch to this song filled with yearning.

    James Arthur- “Just Us” 

    What James Arthur can do to a song is unmatched. He’s the mastermind behind a heart-aching, soul-grasping ballad that will top the radio for weeks on end. An instantaneous creator of classics, James Arthur releases “Just Us”, ahead of his new album Bitter Sweet Love. It follows singles like “Blindside” and “A Year Ago”, “Just Us” is a reminder to focus on what’s really important.

    “‘Just Us’ is a song in which I confess to running away from what really matters and getting lost in the pursuit of validation from external things,” James explains. “It’s about chasing a hedonistic, hollow life. Realizing the true meaning of life which is of course about true love, loving ourselves, our families and our communities and being there for them.”

    Dom Dolla- “Saving Up” 


    Dom Dolla is one of the most exciting names in the electric dance community right now. With the mega-hit “Rhyme Dust” featuring the iconic MK out earlier this year, we got a sense of how Dom Dolla can produce any sort of dance music- regardless of if it’s house, disco, or anything in between. Now, with “Saving Up”, you have the perfect disco-inspired song to get you through the weekend. It’s a promising reminder that anything Dom touches is a banger.

    “I was in the UK last year after a massive summer of touring when I caught the train down to Brighton with some friends and ended up in an incredible studio overlooking the beach. I was missing home a bit, but felt really inspired and wanted to write a feel-good record, reminding myself of the importance of saving time for the ones I care about and love. Whilst (in the studio) overlooking the same site Fatboy Slim hosted his ‘Big Beach Boutique’, I was thinking about the UK’s dance music history and it inspired me so I decided to lean into the idea of writing something that sounds sampled, but isn’t. I often like to write records completely on my own, but it feels so perfect to have written this one alongside some good pals, Clementine Douglas, Caitlin Stubbs & Toby Scott.”

    Joel Corry- Another Friday Night 

    Another heavy-hitter in the EDM community is Joel Corry, who has a proven track record of solidified hits with songs like “Lonely”, “0800 Heaven”, “Head & Heart.” He’s produced songs that are the soundtrack to many nights out, and now he’s here with his debut album, Another Friday Night, just in time for the weekend. It’s one of the most highly anticipated dance albums of the year, with Corry’s uncanny ability to make a song everyone likes.

    Claire Rosinkranz- Just Because

    Claire Rosinkranz isn’t our featured artist of the week “just because”, it’s due to the fact that she’s released her debut album, Just Because. Rosinkranz is a young, dynamic artist who encapsulates the sound of surf and Southern California through picturesque music and retro inspiration. After being discovered at age 16, Rosinkranz has since taken the world by storm with her aptitude for songwriting and her fortifying vocal range.

    Just Because is highlighted by key single tracks like “Wes Anderson”, where Rosinkranz encourages the listener to get over their breakup…and “Swinging at the Stars”, more of an optimistic love anthem with an anticipated accompanying music video featuring a very special guest. It’s a no-skips, must-not-miss album.

    Chloe Stroll- “Hurricane” 

    No stranger to our featured artists lineup, Chloe Stroll is a Popdust fave. After debuting her music career earlier this year (and exclusively speaking with us on the matter), Chloe Stroll is not backing down. Her newest release, “Hurricane”, is a testimony to being loyal to the ones you love.

    One of the most admirable parts of Stroll’s music is that she is staying true to herself, and writing from a genuine place in her heart…which translates to the listener over time. “Hurricane” is an easy listen when you pair her voice with true, sincere lyrics.

    Neil Frances, DRAMA- “Energy”

    A fun-filled track meant for the dance floor, “Energy” is the product of when artists are able to combine their sounds seamlessly. It doesn’t always work, but “Energy” brings a genuine sense of excitement and makes you want to stay out dancing all weekend long.

    “Working with Neil Frances is fun. We’ve been jamming to their tunes for years, and when we teamed up, it was like a lightbulb moment. You know how it is when you work with strangers – it can be hit or miss. But with these guys, it’s a total breath of fresh air! We see a lot of ourselves in them which makes it very easy to create together. There is no pressure to conform or do things the “right” way. We’re just having fun and doing whatever it takes to take our music to the next level.”
