Austin Pets Alive! | Letter from Dr. Jefferson: Properties Update

    [ad_1]

    Mar 18, 2022

I’m excited to let you know that on February 17, 2022, Austin City Council approved a one-year extension on our Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC) license agreement so that we can continue to negotiate the much longer-term license of 75 years. You may recall that we didn’t want a long extension at first, but we now have a more equitable agreement in place which allows us to serve our mission and the City of Austin at the same time while we go into another year of negotiation.

We are very pleased with this agreement, as it has unrestricted our work for the next 12 months. This means we will be able to help any animal in need and intervene in euthanasia lists, while also committing to our continued partnership with Austin Animal Center and to all the dogs and cats in Austin that need our specialized help. We believe this extension will give us enough time to negotiate the terms of the public-private partnership between APA! and the City of Austin so that it is strong and successful, long into the future.

While continuing to negotiate with the city the terms of the 75-year agreement to build and operate at our TLAC campus, we will have time to find the right spaces to house our pets during the eventual demolition and rebuild of the TLAC facilities as well as to move the part of our operations that will need more space than the future restricted TLAC site can provide. The APA! Board of Directors has been continuing to work hard using their connections to lead the search for potential properties to support our planned expansion throughout Austin.

As part of this property search, we are moving ahead on locating land of our own to house a rehabilitation center for dogs who have experienced trauma and provide sanctuary for dogs and cats. This land will also act as a transport hub for animals who are in imminent danger of death in shelters across Texas so that we can connect these cats and dogs with organizations in other states who don’t have enough adoptable pets in shelters to fill the loving, adoptive homes that are available in the northern region of the country.

Knowing that much of what we do will no longer fit at the future TLAC site, we are also continuing our search for additional facilities in Central Austin for adoptions, clinic, and treatment wards such as parvo and ringworm, as well as exploring properties that would be suitable for foster and clinic services and would make fostering more accessible to all of Austin. Though these centrally-located real estate options are few and far between, we are determined to find the right match for our needs.

We will continue to update you on our progress toward these exciting possibilities, and let you know how you can help join us as we work to build an even brighter future for pets and people. Thank you so much for caring about APA! and being such an important part of this lifesaving journey.

  • Austin Pets Alive! | APA! Pilots New Program to Support Dog Fosters

Austin Pets Alive! | APA! Pilots New Program to Support Dog Fosters

    [ad_1]

    Jan 26, 2022

We are now offering a variety of training classes to help you get your foster dog from here to outta here! Check out the descriptions below and be sure to sign up! You can find FAQs and more information here. We’ll see you in class!

    Basic Obedience:

Basic Obedience Class is designed to help foster dogs learn the basic skills needed to improve their manners and enhance adoptability. This 6-week course consists of one-hour, in-person classes where fosters and their dogs can learn foundational skills such as sit, down, recall, and more, all while building a stronger relationship with their pup before finding their homes. Fosters are highly encouraged to attend all six classes. The course is open to anyone currently fostering a dog with Austin Pets Alive! Eligible foster dogs must be fully vaccinated and 5 months or older. This course will be held on Saturdays at 9 am at The ABGB. SIGN UP HERE!

Foster dogs that exhibit behaviors that could be considered dangerous in a class setting may not attend class.

If your dog is exhibiting behaviors that would disrupt class, such as reactivity, contact Lyndsey Mosso to schedule private sessions to work with your foster pup. The maximum number of fosters who can enroll in the Basic Obedience Class is 10. Because each week’s class will build off of the previous week, we strongly encourage fosters to come to all six classes. However, if you need to miss a class, please contact Lyndsey Mosso ahead of time to work something out.

    Puppy Class:

Puppy Class is offered to fosters who have puppies and want to learn more about raising a dog in the easiest, most appropriate, and most successful way. This 6-week class is focused on how to begin a puppy’s life with immediate structure and training, in an effort to mitigate behavioral issues that could occur in the future. Our goal is for a majority of APA! fosters and their puppies to have proper socialization and options for doing so.

Puppy Class is a 6-part, one-hour, drop-in class that will take place every Thursday at 10 am. It will be hosted at The Watering Bowl Dog Park and Bar. It is ideal for fosters to come to every class, but not required if unable to make it on a certain date. SIGN UP HERE!

    Transitions Class:

Transitioning from the shelter to a home environment can be hard for many dogs. This virtual, 5-part class is directed toward foster dogs who are struggling to adjust from moving out of the shelter and into a home. We will focus on how to work these pups through the common issues they are facing, and prevent returns to the shelter by doing so. Fosters and their dogs will learn how to identify stress-related behaviors and use training techniques to help establish calm, collected, and comfortable behavior in the home.

This virtual, 5-part class will be held on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm. Transitions Class will be an hour-long drop-in course that is hosted bi-weekly on Google Meet. This course is open to any fosters who would like to expand their education on how to reduce transitional behavior issues and stress in the home. Fosters are not required to attend each class; rather, they can sign up for the topics they’re most interested in learning about. SIGN UP HERE!

    Naughty Behaviors:

This class is targeted towards our pups that are a bit more sensitive than the rest and who need a little extra help with more challenging behaviors. By offering a group class that provides personalized training and is focused on a variety of behavioral issues, we hope that it will limit the returns of animals based on these reasons. Our goal is to teach handlers to actively work through these issues confidently and safely. We will discuss what each problem behavior looks like, how to identify these issues, and how to work through them with different training exercises.

Our Naughty Behaviors Class is a 4-week class that’s open to any foster who is encountering more challenging behavioral issues or wants to learn how to be proactive on these behaviors. Each week will focus on one category of behavior and will consist of two one-hour classes: a virtual class on Wednesday at 6:30 pm and an in-person class on Saturday at 10:15 am. Fosters can attend classes for every behavior, or pick and choose behaviors that most apply to them. Any foster with a fully vaccinated dog of 5 months or older can join the class. SIGN UP HERE!

  • Victory for the World Dog Alliance: South Korea Takes Steps to Outlaw Dog Meat

Victory for the World Dog Alliance: South Korea Takes Steps to Outlaw Dog Meat

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Nov 25, 2021

The South Korean government launched a formal discussion on the prohibition of dog meat, marking another milestone for the World Dog Alliance’s global campaign against this horrific practice.

“With the sharp increase in the number of households with pets and growing public interest in animal rights and animal welfare, we are witnessing increasing calls against viewing dog meat consumption as part of an old food culture.”

“We will form a joint private-government consultative body led by civilians and produce a social consensus.”

    – South Korean Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum

The discussion came after President Moon Jae-in raised the need to “carefully look into banning dog meat consumption” in September.

The public consultation is expected to be concluded in April 2022.

South Korea has the highest population ratio of dog meat eaters in the world, with millions of dogs served at the dining table every year. The cruel practice is often criticized by the international community, tarnishing the country’s image as a democratic and advanced society.

Younger generations in South Korea are generally opposed to dog meat; recent surveys showed over 70% of people support a dog meat ban.

Genlin, founder of the World Dog Alliance (WDA), started his legislative crusade in South Korea in 2014.

Ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, the WDA launched an online petition on the UK Parliament website, urging the South Korean government to ban dog meat. The UK Parliament held a debate on this diplomatic issue to expressed its support for the WDA. Later in the same year, Lee Jae-myung, then mayor of Seongnam city and current contender for the upcoming presidential election to be held in March 2022, shut down the biggest dog meat market in South Korea, the Moran Market.

President Moon is known as a dog lover and lives with several dogs at the presidential compound. In 2018, the WDA hosted an event for the “First Dog” Tori, a black stray dog adopted by President Moon. During the event, a letter written by Genlin to President Moon was handed to his daughter.

“Dear Mr. President, if you implement a ban on dog and cat meat, it will turn a new page of history in South Korea, and will contribute to peacebuilding on the Korean Peninsula.”

    – Genlin’s letter to President Moon Jae-in

Genlin welcomes the move made by the South Korean government. He believes a dog meat ban in the country will serve as an example for the rest of Asia to follow.

  • Austin Pets Alive! | Lessons Learned from Layla

Austin Pets Alive! | Lessons Learned from Layla

    [ad_1]

    Sep 23, 2021

“With the recent passing of my dog Layla, I felt compelled to tell you about our story together.”

“This letter is as much for me as it is to document a life that was so filled with value, love, and lessons about relationships and respect.

I am beyond grateful to have had this amazing dog in my life.”

“Layla was my most challenging pet. She was very different yet I learned so much from her. She made me a much better dog mom, teacher, and human being.

She was our first rescue dog. We adopted her from APA! over 12 years ago on South Congress while we had family visiting for Thanksgiving. She came with the name “Poppy.”

“She came with a bag of medicine and some loving care instructions. She was quite sick and required a great deal of extra attention. She spent the first months of her life in our master bathroom because she was a pretty sick little puppy.

I thought I was not up for the challenge but with phone support and kindness from Dr. Jefferon, and a few wonderful phone counselors, we made it. I am so grateful for the support because I never would have known the amazing experience of truly developing the loving and mutual respect between myself and this wonderful pup.”

“Layla was a different type of dog. I have always had super social dogs – Golden Retrievers and Westies.

They are sweet and pleasing and just want to be with you. They love everyone. Not Layla, she was scared early on and she did not like other dogs so group classes and social events, even walking in heavily populated areas was not for her. She and I learned about each other. I watched her and learned her cues.”

“As an elementary school teacher, I became a better teacher because of Layla. I learned to look for cues and to really watch and learn what she (& my students) needed. I have found there are a lot of Laylas out there. She became my first thought when I had a student that did not get along with others and I stayed patient.

They would be my “Laylas.” I loved her unconditionally and respected her for what she needed and in return, she loved and respected me, even up to the last moment.”

“A few weeks ago, she got very sick and had all the signs of cancer. That last day, one of the hardest days of my life, we went for a ride, her favorite thing to do. I told her how grateful I was to have her in my life and she went for a short walk because that was what she wanted to do. Layla trusted me at the end when I told her to come to lay down on her bed and had a vet put her to sleep on her favorite bed in front of her favorite window.”

“I will forever be grateful for this amazing and loving relationship that I experienced.”

  • Austin Pets Alive! | Airstream Makeover for the Pups!

Austin Pets Alive! | Airstream Makeover for the Pups!

    [ad_1]

    Sep 03, 2021

These happy pups got to break in our newly renovated Airstream!

The Airstream is a safe haven for our dogs and is designed to give them a nice AC break and a comfy couch to relax on when they need a little break from the shelter. It’s especially useful in the summer months, with a pool perfect for keeping everyone cool!

The Airstream is near and dear to a lot of hearts at APA! because of its history. Back in the day, you could find the Airstream filled with adoptable pets parked on South Congress before we had our brick and mortar building at Town Lake Animal Center. The Airstream is also where our Neonatal Kitten Nursery began. It’s hard to imagine the program fitting in a space as small as the Airstream, but in true APA! fashion, we made it work! We’ve done a lot of growing since then and our Neonatal program now has a sterile building of its own. The Airstream has stayed with us throughout the years parked at our Town Lake Shelter and has always provided a much-needed AC break to our pups, as well as a home-like setting for them to decompress. It’s seen a lot of wear and tear over the many months it has been used by our pups, so when we were approached by Lincoln Ventures about giving the Airstream a makeover, we couldn’t have been more excited.

Lincoln Ventures felt compelled to do this project for many reasons. “We as a company have a huge passion for dogs so what better way to best use our skills than to develop a better environment for the deserving dogs at APA! We knew we had the relationships with amazing vendors in town to help us pull off the makeover and our passion for design would really shine in this endeavor. We wanted to embrace the classic nature of the Airstream and create a destination on the APA! grounds that was cheerful and a departure from the somewhat stressful surroundings. A bit of a stay-cation for the pooches! The Palm Springs vibe seemed like the perfect direction with its nostalgia and playful roots in both design and travel culture.

Renovating this space for our dogs was no small project, and we had a lot of help and support from the following companies: Led by Lincoln Ventures and TBG teaming with Blue Sky Design and Build, US Lumber Brokers, Clean Scapes, Clay Imports, and Forever Lawn. These companies donated their time, talent, labor, and materials to improve the lives of the dogs in our shelter and we couldn’t be more grateful. They refreshed the interior of the Airstream trailer and even added an outdoor relaxing space, complete with a patio deck. A huge thank you to them all!

When asked what they hope the makeover will offer the people and pets of APA!, Krista from Lincoln Ventures explained that their “hope is that this indoor/outdoor retreat allows the volunteers to introduce the dogs to a safe place to escape the chaos of the shelter life and start dipping a toe into what life will be like when they land their forever home.” The Airstream gives our shelter dogs the opportunity to receive some “in-home” training before they reach their foster or forever home. Krista also hopes that “seeing these resilient animals in beautiful spaces may resonate with families looking to adopt. Not everyone can handle seeing photos of a dog in a cage, but by seeing them in a space that looks like home, they may be able to visualize adopting and incorporating these dogs into their lives.

Our staff and volunteers couldn’t be more excited to break in our new Airstream space with every pup this fall. The dogs of APA! are ready for a pool party! Check out the photos of our dogs living the good life in their new space while they await their forever homes!

Austin Pets Alive! | Senior Dogs at Austin Pets Alive! Fetch Life…

    [ad_1]

    Aug 20, 2021

AUSTIN, TX — Tails are wagging at Austin Pets Alive! this summer, as the Central Texas shelter was announced as a winning recipient of one of The Grey Muzzle Organization’s annual grants for the fifth consecutive year.

APA! is one of 77 animal welfare groups chosen from 266 applicants to receive a grant to help local senior dogs. The winning groups received more than $616,000 in grants to help save or improve the lives of at-risk old dogs in their communities.

11-year old Tiana is one of several sweet seniors at APA! who will benefit from this grant. She earned the nickname “Queen of Chairs” from her habit of wanting to try out any chair or comfy piece of furniture she encounters. Tiana came to APA! in January 2020 as an owner surrender, and has been regularly training with the shelter’s Dog Behavior team to set her up for success in a home. This grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization gives dogs like Tiana the support they need to reach for a brighter future.

    Tiana

Senior dogs often face an uphill battle finding adopters willing to take on an older pet. Many senior dogs also arrive at shelters with extensive medical needs, such as dental complications and heartworm disease, that most traditional shelters lack the resources to treat. Fortunately, APA!’s specialized programs are able to provide a crucial safety net for older dogs, covering the necessary medical care to improve their quality of life as they wait to find loving homes.

“Senior dogs are the best for so many reasons!” said APA!’s Dog Adoption Manager, Allison Swearingen. “It’s always sad to see them end up in a shelter setting in what should be their golden, easy years; but luckily tons of people are catching on about these well-mannered pups! They already have years of training under their belts and are just looking for a comfy home to spend the rest of their lives in while giving all their love to whomever is lucky enough to rescue them!”

Over the past 13 years, the national nonprofit Grey Muzzle Organization has provided more than $3.1 million in grants to support its vision of “a world where no old dog dies alone and afraid.”

“Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re delighted to help deserving organizations like Austin Pets Alive! make a difference in the lives of dogs and people in their communities,” Grey Muzzle’s Executive Director Lisa Lunghofer said. “Many senior dogs in the Austin Area are enjoying their golden years in loving homes thanks to the wonderful work of APA!.”

    [ad_1]

    Jun 25, 2021

AUSTIN, TX — Austin Pets Alive! announces the launch of the Five-Star Foster Program. APA!’s Five-Star Foster Program places dogs with specific behavior management needs into appropriate foster homes in order to reduce their stress, continue their training, and teach them what a loving home environment is.

Five-Star Fosters provide training and socialization for their foster dogs and manage them in a safe and consistent manner with continual support from APA!’s renowned Dog Behavior Team. What makes the Five-Star Foster Program different from APA!’s main Dog Foster Program is the specific subset of dogs and home setups for those particular pups. Some may need an adult-only home; some thrive with a dog sibling and others may need a yard. The dogs eligible for the Five-Star Foster Program come in all shapes and sizes, with different kinds of homes.

“The five stars represent what our fosters selflessly give to these dogs: trust, rehabilitation, love, patience and training,” said Laura Thomas, APA! Dog Behavior Program Manager. “Opening your home to one of these special dogs is the ultimate form of lifesaving.”

Austin Pets Alive! takes in approximately 5,000 dogs every year from shelters that do not have enough space or resources to care for them. Some of those dogs have behavioral challenges that require more attention than a typical dog. Through APA!’s Five-Star Foster Program, these special dogs have a chance at finding their forever home through fosters who are willing to be consistent, patient, and loving.

To learn more about the Five-Star Foster Program, please watch this video. To apply to foster, please visit www.austinpetsalive.org/foster.

We are so grateful to everyone who stepped up to foster one of the dogs or puppies who tested positive for distemper and needed immediate foster placement. Because of you, we exceeded our goal of finding 20 fosters and more than 150 people signed up to help, so we’re able to save even more lives than we imagined!

“I hadn’t planned to take on another foster for a few months, but this was too extreme of a situation to ignore. Goofy is an extremely cute dog, so I hope he will get adopted quickly,” said Cassie Swayze, one of the Austin fosters who answered APA!’s call. “Since the pandemic, APA! has made fostering super easy because you can do everything online! They also have a huge shed with tons of supplies like leashes, toys, beds, and crates.”

Goofy in his foster home with Cassie.

    Gary in his foster home.

Another Austin resident who volunteered to foster one of the dogs recovering from distemper is Sierra Gonzales. She is fostering Gary and said, “I sleep better at night, knowing that I helped save his life. Gary is so playful and I like him so much.”

We would like to extend a huge shout-out to our local media partners who helped us get the word out immediately to as many people as possible, and special thanks to our colleagues at Bastrop Animal Services for working alongside us to get these dogs to safety. While this situation could have turned out very differently without the mutual collaboration of our two organizations, the compassionate team at Bastrop got to work to get them into foster homes and save their lives. We’re all in this together and we are so grateful for our partnership with them.

  • Kings Peak Tent, First Ever 2-Person, 1-2 Dog Tent

Kings Peak Tent, First Ever 2-Person, 1-2 Dog Tent

    [ad_1]

Just like everyone else, the Kings Peak founders added a puppy to their family during the 2020 pandemic. Even before they got Ollie, backpacking was a big part of their lives, and they wanted their pup to be a part of that too. Taking dogs to the mountains is like taking kids to Disneyland, they obviously belong there. But they quickly found there was no easy way to accommodate Ollie sleeping at night without either making a mess of the gear or making him sleep outside. After contemplating a DIY solution, they decided that they should spend a lot more time and effort towards this project to make the perfect solution and see if others were interested in the same idea. So, they created the Kings Peak tent, which has a separate section in the tent for a dog. It features an interior removable mesh wall and a separate exterior doggy door.

If a dog is crate trained or love their personal space/area at night, they will thrive with this tent set-up. Ollie slept more than he ever has backpacking, which is important because dogs need their rest just as much as humans do. He was never anxious, because he could see that his owners were right next to him all night, and even his owners slept better knowing he was safe and comfortable in his own area. The well-known American Kennel Club said that “For thousands of years dogs have sought out small, enclosed spaces for shelter and security. Crating your dog can give him that feeling of safety, like he has his own room to go to.” The Kings Peak family stands behind this statement 100% and believes that this tent set-up will change how one backpacks with their dog, for both the owner and their dog.

Austin Pets Alive! | A Lifesaving Request from Dr. Jefferson

    [ad_1]

    Jun 16, 2021

Not far from APA!, our friends at the Bastrop County Animal Shelter reached out to us for emergency help, as their shelter is facing an outbreak of distemper. All their kennels are full and the pets inside are facing euthanasia to make room for incoming pets. This news is devastating, and we want to help.

The Bastrop County Animal Shelter said their greatest need is for us to help them save the lives of 20 dogs. The dogs have tested positive and may come down with signs of distemper. They need a place to stay while recovering – so their foster homes need to have no other dogs or ferrets, or fully-vaccinated adult dogs with healthy immune systems.

These dogs are friendly and adoptable, yet they are facing euthanasia if they cannot find foster homes over the next 48 hours.

Distemper is a contagious disease of dogs, coyotes, raccoons and other wildlife. It can cause fever, lethargy, anorexia, and respiratory illness. The virus is spread in the respiratory secretions and urine of infected animals. It’s easily prevented with routine vaccinations and vaccinated pets are not at great risk (much like COVID). Distemper does not infect domestic cats, people, pocket pets (like hamsters or sugar gliders, but does infect ferrets) or birds.

If you can foster a dog in the next 48 hours, please email [email protected] and someone will respond right away. If you’re not able to foster but still want to help pets in Bastrop, please consider donating to their Amazon wishlist.

We are so grateful for the generosity of the greater Austin community for opening both hearts and homes to the pets from APA!, Bastrop and anywhere there is a need.

  • Austin Pets Alive! | Heat Safety Tips for Pets

Austin Pets Alive! | Heat Safety Tips for Pets

    [ad_1]

    May 25, 2021

As we Austinites know, Texas summer heat is real – and sweltering hot.

With most summer days reaching at least 90 degrees in Austin, Texas, Austin Pets Alive! is alerting pet owners to exercise caution on these brutally hot days. Temperatures like these can be very dangerous for pets, especially dogs, leading to dehydration and in some cases, death.

As we ease into the summer months, be sure to follow these helpful pointers:

    • Check the pavement before going on a walk. Place your hand on it for 10 full seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Know the signs – lagging is the number one sign that your dog is too hot.
    • Water, water, water! Let your pet go for a swim in cool water and make sure they are staying hydrated. Getting your pet wet is the best way to speed up the cooling process.
    • Keep an eye on your pet’s tongue and eyes. Red eyes and a tongue hanging very far out of a dog’s mouth is an indication that they are overheating.
    • Limit outdoor activity. Take short walks in shaded areas or consider taking an evening stroll.
    • Do NOT leave your pet in the car, not even for a short period of time. Did you know that on a 95-degree day, your car is actually degrees?

There are other summer heat tips that are less commonly heard about but are just as important such as supervising your pet in the pool. To avoid a dangerous situation, consider fencing off or covering your pool for when you aren’t home. Another tip to keep in mind is that when grooming your pet, avoid cutting their hair too short. Their fur helps combat sunburns and regulate body temperature. For these upcoming summer months, pet sunscreen is a great investment – we bet you didn’t know it was a thing!

Dogs most susceptible to heatstroke are overweight dogs, dogs with long fur, short nose dogs, senior dogs, and those who have lung or breathing issues. It’s important to remember that dogs only sweat through their mouth, feet, and ears, which is why they suffer from heat exhaustion faster than humans. So, even though you may be tolerating the heat, your dog may be suffering.

To help keep pet safety top of mind at a popular Austin-outdoor fave location, we’ve posted signage around the trail looping Lady Bird Lake. Thank you to Rocket Banners, a company that generously donated the print of these heat safety signs reminding trail-goers to keep their pets safe. Be on the lookout for those tips and warnings!

Austin Pets Alive! wants to keep all pet lovers informed and our furry friends safe from the ravaging heat! Follow our friendly tips and refer back when needed for a fun, safe summer!

We have an important PSA while we have your attention! While scooping the poop may not seem important, and at times pretty gross, it is crucial to the health and safety of our community. Just to put things into perspective, there are over 250,000 dogs in Austin, which in turn creates 150,000 pounds of poop per day. And now, more than ever before, we each have an obligation to care for, and look after, the health and safety of our neighbors and fellow Austinites. Click here to learn more!

    Apr 16, 2021

Austin Pets Alive! is thrilled to announce the return of Paddle for Puppies, presented by Austin Subaru and hosted at Rowing Dock. Though the format may look a little different from years past, the concept — and the cause — are the same.

Instead of hosting this fundraiser on one day, it has been spread out over the course of a weekend to accommodate social distancing needs. Participants can register for their preferred time slot on one of three days (May 7, 4-8 pm; May 8, 8 am-12 pm; May 9, 8 am-12 pm) and enjoy a leisurely paddle, kayak, or canoe ride on their own down Lady Bird Lake. All participants will receive an exclusive Paddle for Puppies t-shirt, and all proceeds directly benefit the APA! Parvo Puppy ICU.

This is the 10th anniversary of Paddle for Puppies. Since its inception in 2011, Austin Subaru has raised over $20,000 each year through this community favorite activity. APA!’s Parvo Puppy ICU is a specialized facility designed to care for puppies that contract canine parvovirus, a highly contagious and life-threatening virus. Dogs with parvo are often at extremely high risk of euthanasia in certain shelters and regions that lack the resources to safely quarantine and treat these pups. Through this program, APA! provides shelters across Texas with an alternative to euthanasia and saves around 500 lives each year.

Due to recent detection of toxins in an algae sample taken from Lake Austin, APA! is not encouraging participants to bring their dogs along for the paddle at this time. Humans of all ages, however, are welcome to attend. Registration starts at $40 per adult, with an optional boat rental fee. Children under 16 can be added on as a second rider for $25. All attendees can register on the Paddle for Puppies website ahead of time.

Austin Pets Alive! | Austin FC and Austin Pets Alive! Announce…

    [ad_1]

    Apr 06, 2021

AUSTIN, TX — Austin FC today announced an innovative community partnership with Austin Pets Alive! to showcase eligible dogs as honorary Austin FC mascots at Q2 Stadium in an effort to raise the profile of dog adoption throughout the region.

The first-of-its-kind honorary mascot partnership will see APA! dogs available for adoption featured as Austin FC honorary mascots at each Austin FC regular season home match throughout the 2021 season. Aligned with Austin’s status as the country’s largest “no-kill” city, Austin FC and Austin Pets Alive! will promote APA!’s rescue, adoption, foster, and volunteerism efforts through this unique community platform.

In support of finding loving homes for adoptable pets available through APA!, Austin FC will provide additional exposure for the featured pets through social media outreach and in-venue activations during each match at Q2 Stadium, including the participation of a dog within the pre-match activations that occurs shortly before kickoff of each match.

“Austin FC’s partnership with APA! is unique in sports yet incredibly authentic in Austin,” said Austin FC President, Andy Loughnane. “By featuring APA! dogs as honorary mascots at Austin FC home matches, our Club and supporters can help at-risk dogs in Austin by introducing them to our dog-loving community.”

“APA! has been fortunate enough to be a part of the Austin community for a little over a decade now,” said Dr. Ellen Jefferson, APA!’s President and CEO. “We’ve grown with this community and are excited to take a seat next to Austin FC and be a part of this new development in such a unique way! This is a really fun adventure to be on!”

“Austin Pets Alive! is beyond honored to join the Austin FC team in such a special way. To be able to highlight the amazing dogs in our care, those that are most at risk for euthanasia, to this audience is really quite a dream. It is our hope to connect with the team and its fans on a deep level and we look forward to cheering for Austin’s team” said Katera Berent, APA!’s PR and Events Manager

Alongside the city’s other shelter systems, APA! supports Austin’s position as a model city for the “No-Kill” movement across the country and internationally. Giving over 90,000 animals a second chance at life over the last decade, APA! believes that every shelter animal in Central Texas and beyond deserves a chance at life. This partnership provides another avenue for APA! to create awareness around the shelter animals available for adoption.

World-leading creatives, activists and conservationists are talking to the Species Unite podcast about how they dedicate their lives and expertise to help animals, thrive on plant-based diets and are changing the narrative around how we treat other species across the planet

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 30, 2020

Species Unite,” a podcast that offers a glimpse into some of the best minds in animal advocacy, is the much-needed beacon of hope everyone can use during these troubling times.

Each episode sees host Elizabeth Novogratz speak with the people who dedicate their lives and expertise to helping animals. Leading photographers, philosophers, scientists, writers, undercover investigators, lawyers, animal experts, and activists are among those telling stories of their victories and their ongoing battles.

Whilst the issues they address are often startling and horrific, they importantly offer an inspiring look at how one person can help change the world for animals.

The podcast has just dropped series four – and the lineup shows just how animal issues are more relevant and urgent than ever. One episode looks at what’s really going on for animals in China right now. With the coronavirus pandemic putting the country’s wildlife trade and wet markets under global scrutiny, Species Unite chats with Pei Su, the founder of one of China’s leading animal organizations, ACTAsia, to reveal insights from an Asian perspective – a perspective that’s often overshadowed during discussions on animals in China.

Other episodes instead offer a perfect distraction if listeners want some relief from coronavirus talk. Leading fashion designer Joshua Katcher, who has appeared in Vogue and GQ and counts the likes of Joaquin Phoenix among those who wear his designs, discusses his work in making fashion ethical and free from animal exploitation.

Fascinated (and horrified) by Tiger King? The Species Unite podcast has been talking to the experts about America’s tiger problem, too, and explores the animal issues that the Netflix hit often glosses over. Stories range from leading specialist Tim Harrison, who has spent over 40 years fighting to get exotic animals out of people’s homes and into sanctuaries, to journalist Sharon Guynup, who spent two years investigating America’s captive tigers for a groundbreaking National Geographic exposé.

Find the full list of Species Unite podcasts here – and also listen to the episodes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Play.

Lady Freethinker’s undercover footage helps score an unprecedented conviction for animal abuse in Chile

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 9, 2019

An undercover investigation in Chile by Los Angeles-based animal rights organization Lady Freethinker resulted in a criminal court handing down the nation’s highest-ever sentence for animal cruelty last week.

On Aug. 29, a historic first occurred when the defendant — an illegal dog breeder and known dogfighting organizer — received the maximum sentence of three years imprisonment, along with the maximum fine possible, and a lifelong ban on ever having an animal in his possession again.

“It is the first conviction achieved here in the San Felipe Prosecutor’s Office regarding the crime of animal abuse resulting in death,” said Prosecutor Palacios Bobadilla, in a press release. “For animal groups, a precedent is set regarding animal abuse… it is the maximum penalty established by the law: the three years of imprisonment and…the maximum fine of three Monthly Tax Units.”

    LONG ROAD TO VICTORY

The case began in 2018 when in July, LFT sent an undercover reporter to the defendant’s property in the Chilean town of Llay Llay, and secretly filmed footage of nearly two dozen dogs living in deplorable conditions. All were sick, wounded and starving.

LFT’s findings were pretty gruesome: Dogs were kept on short, heavy chains, or in small, filthy kennels with no food or water. Their otherwise-empty bowls were coated in green slime.

One pit bull had scars and wounds on his neck consistent with those of dog fights. Many dogs had eye infections or other untreated ailments. Three dogs were already dead, their bodies decomposing in the dirt. Veterinary examiners believe they starved to death.

Additionally, more than 30 hens and cockfighting roosters were caged on the premises. Nobody appeared to live on the property to care for any of the animals.

The footage led to the defendant’s arrest by the Chilean police and in the seizure of 21 dogs from the property. The three deaths aggravated the animal cruelty charges, leading to an increased sentence. Meanwhile, the surviving dogs were placed in foster care and have since found loving homes.

Following the investigation, Lady Freethinker submitted to the San Felipean court a petition with more than 22,000 signatures from people around the world calling for justice in this case, and urging prosecutors to start treating animal cruelty cases with the severity they deserve. 14 months later, their voices were heard and a historic ruling was made.

“This historic sentence is a tremendous win for the animals of Chile,” said Lady Freethinker President Nina Jackel. “Gone are the days when animal abusers can commit violent acts without fear of consequence. My sincerest thanks to the prosecutors and judge in this case for taking a strong stand against animal cruelty.”

Lady Freethinker’s recent investigations include exposing the deadly dogfighting trade on Facebook and a dog-meat farm in South Korea.

  • Berthoud, Colorado Bans the Sale of Puppies and Kittens in Pet Stores

Berthoud, Colorado Bans the Sale of Puppies and Kittens in Pet Stores

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 26, 2019

In a preemptive move leading the way toward a more humane Colorado, on June 25 an ordinance proposed by Harley’s Dream, which bans the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores, was unanimously passed by the Berthoud Board of Trustees.

Berthoud, Colorado joins more than 300 jurisdictions across the country which have passed ordinances or laws that restrict the retail sales of dogs and cats. A majority of puppies sold in pet stores are born in commercial breeding facilities, also known as puppy mills. These mills are commonly inhumane, overcrowded and unsanitary. Puppies and kittens born in mills do not receive adequate veterinary care, exercise, socialization or human contact.

This is a huge step forward for animal welfare in Colorado. Harley’s Dream wishes to thank Mayor William Karspeck for championing this measure, and the members of the Berthoud Town Board for their swift action in ensuring Berthoud will lead the way in Colorado to establishing and always remaining a humane community.

“Our hope is that Berthoud can be a model for other jurisdictions, that they will take the same action, eventually leading toward a state-wide law prohibiting puppies and kittens from being sold in pet stores. We want to stop the puppy mill pipeline into Colorado,” says Rudi Taylor, co-founder of Harley’s Dream. “And while we do support responsible breeding, as those breeders never sell their puppies to pet stores, a measure such as Berthoud’s will positively impact the adoption of shelter and rescue pets.”

    About Harley
Berthoud is the hometown of Harley, a one-eyed Chihuahua who spent his first 10 years living in a cage in a puppy mill. His sole purpose was to produce puppies to be sold in pet stores. Harley’s eye was lost because his cage was cleaned with a power-washer, with him in it. After being rescued, Harley began his triumphant journey. His efforts as a “spokes-dog” against puppy mills earned him the top honor as American Humane’s “Hero Dog of the Year.” Harley had been on the Today Show, HuffpostLIVE, Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family Show and numerous news segments. He also had the opportunity to testify during a congressional caucus on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Sadly, Harley passed away in March 2016, but his legacy lives on … his mission will continue until puppy mills no longer exist. Harley inspired so many people to do great things, and he continues to be the voice for the hundreds of thousands of dogs suffering in puppy mills today.

    About Harley’s Dream
Harley’s Dream was established in 2016 to create awareness and educate the public about the cruel commercial dog breeding industry, also known as puppy mills. They believe that a grassroots approach by large groups of concerned citizens is the most effective way to bring about change. Their focus is to encourage advocacy by providing the tools necessary to educate children and adults alike. Harley’s Dream is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Berthoud, Colorado. Keri Shull Team & DC Paws Rescue Host Halloween Pet Adoption Event

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Oct 28, 2016

The Keri Shull realty team is committed to finding homes for everyone, even pets! Join us at our pet adoption event this Halloween weekend.

    • WHEN: 10/29/16 – 12:00pm to 2:00pm
    • WHERE: 1600 Wilson Blvd. Suite 101, Arlington VA 22209

The Keri Shull Team is partnering up with DC PAWS, a nonprofit animal rescue organization dedicated to saving homeless animals from high-kill animal control facilities in the DMV area. The goal is to get as many pets adopted as possible at the event to make room for new pets in need. Everyone deserves a home of their own, and these furry friends are no exception.

“We understand how important having a home is to our clients. We see how much of a difference it makes in their lives, so our focus is to help find housing for all.”

    Keri Shull, CEO / Founder

“We understand how important having a home is to our clients. We see how much of a difference it makes in their lives, so our focus is to help find housing for all,” said the team’s founder, Keri Shull.

Videos of adopted pets reacting to their new homes go viral on the internet every day. Their happiness is evident when they are finally given a home of their own. Help the Keri Shull team save a pet’s life by enriching your own with the company of a new friend. The love you’ll receive from a rescued animal is pure and lasts a lifetime.

Shull and her team are excited to host a pet adoption event at their office in Arlington on Saturday, October 29th from 12pm-2pm. There will be puppies, kittens, and adult dogs and cats available for adoption.

As with all nonprofit rescue organizations, DC PAWS relies solely on adoption fees to keep funding their mission to save animals from euthanasia. The fees for adopting dogs and cats are $350.00 and $150.00 respectively, unless otherwise noted. All animals over six months of age are spayed and neutered. Puppies and kittens under six months old are expected to be fixed by their new owner when they come of age as part of the adoption contract for each animal.

If you have room in your heart and your home to take in one of these lovable, lonely pets, come visit the Keri Shull team this weekend to meet your new forever friend. We know you’ll fall in love with them just as much as they’ll fall in love with you. Save a life and adopt a pet this fall. Your home will never be the same again, in the best way!
