    In a tough neighborhood, a place where life isn’t easy, there’s a story about an old dog named Chucky that really makes you think about how cruel people can be. Chucky, who’s about fourteen years old, has been through a lot. He’s a friendly dog who has spent most of life in a harsh environment. Let me tell you his story.

    A Rough Start

    Chucky’s journey started with a rough patch when a car ran over his foot. His owner, worried and sad, called a group known as Sidewalk for help which is a mass sterilization unit & dog rescue. They rushed Chucky to the vet, and thanks to people who donated money, he got the treatment he needed to walk again.

    As the years went by, Sidewalk didn’t forget about Chucky. They kept coming back to check on him, making sure he was okay and helping him with new problems like arthritis. They even took care of his dog friends in the neighborhood, giving them shots and making sure they were healthy.

    Beaten By A Shovel

    But things got bad again when some cruel people hurt Chucky with a shovel “They beat him with a shovel”. His owner was heartbroken and scared for him. She said, “I just want him to be safe and not sore like he is now.” She knew it wasn’t safe for him anymore. Through her tears, she asked Sidewalk to find a safer place for Chucky to live. 

    Sidewalk jumped into action. They talked about moving Chucky to a retirement home, somewhere he could be safe and not have to worry about being hurt again. They planned to take him to Cape Town for special vet care first, because of his arthritis. This story really shows why we need groups like Sidewalk. There are so many animals out there who live in dangerous places and need help. Now, Chucky is getting ready to move to his new home where he will be safe and loved.

    Stranded dog rescued along spillway surrounded by alligator-infested waters in Martin County

    PALM CITY, Florida (WPBF) — A dog found stranded on a spillway surrounded by alligator-infested waters has survived, according to officials with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

    Belle Glade resident Wendy Diaz said her husband spotted the dog on a spillway with a 12-foot drop around the rim canal Tuesday in Port Mayaca.

    Diaz said when her husband called her and told her he tried to rescue the dog but failed, she joined him, and they both tried again.

    She said they dialed 911 for help, and the dispatcher sent Animal Services supervisors to the scene to rescue the dog.

    “You can see the gators swimming around, and you know I was scared for the dog and also for us,” Diaz said. “Because I was thinking we need professionals to get her.”

    Crews were able to rescue the dog. She was taken to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.

    When Don Babinski founded the Babinski Foundation in 2010, his goal was to provide a way to give animals – especially dogs and cats – a second chance at a quality life. Through funding from his property business he was able to build his legacy and better the lives of numerous pets. In December of 2016, that effort took a huge leap forward when the Babinski Foundation erected a 26,000 square foot building just outside of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota. 

    Included in the new facility room is a room dedicated to the training of dogs – either as a form a rehabilitation from surgeries or basic obedience – as a way to make the animals more adoptable. It’s also used as a playroom with adverse weather conditions make it less desirable for the dogs to play outside. In that training room is 1/4 inch thick rubber flooring from Greatmats. 

    They don’t always have control of themselves, but on that rubber mat it just kind of keeps them nice and stable.

    Allison Parrott, an animal care specialist for the Babinski Foundation, often uses the training room and says, ”I’ve trained on linoleum floors. I’ve trained on wood floors and with the animals that I’ve worked with in the past, they’re always kind of slipping and sliding. They don’t always have control of themselves, but on that rubber mat it just kind of keeps them nice and stable.” 

    She’s also been pleased with the cleaning process. 

    ”Cleaning is super easy,” Allison said. ”We mop in there a couple of times a week and just one easy swipe gets rid of all the mess. It’s really easy to sweep as well. Even if the dogs have accidents, it’s really easy to clean up with some paper towels and stuff. It doesn’t leave any residue or any paper towel mess on there.” 

    Shelter Manager Donald Snyders, the grandson of Don Babinski, has also been pleased with the addition of rubber flooring to the room. 

    ”It’s worked out excellent for us,” Donald said.
