  • Elusive pack of dogs in Johnson County rescued before animal control stepped in

    [ad_1]

The pack of dogs initially only came into the neighborhood at night, but neighbors grew concerned when they started seeing them roaming the neighborhood during the day.

The pack of dogs initially only came into the neighborhood at night, but neighbors grew concerned when they started seeing them roaming the neighborhood during the day.

Dory Cox, Texas All Creatures Rescue

Texas All Creatures Rescue trapped 13 adult dogs and nine puppies have been roaming two Johnson County neighborhoods for the past few months.

Initially, Godley residents thought it was a pack of 40 wild dogs, but rescuers said they only found 22 dogs on private property near the Star Ranch and Wildcat Ridge subdivisions.

Last week, Johnson County commissioners and the Godley City Council approved agreements with the city of Fort Worth to have its animal control service trap and take the dogs to shelters.

Dory Cox, who works with Texas All Creatures Rescue, said that after county and city officials declined her request hold off on the agreement, the rescue began to look for temporary housing for the dogs.

“We spent the whole weekend trapping and transporting dogs so that they would not go to the shelter, because we felt very strongly, they wouldn’t do well in the shelter environment,” Cox said. “And we didn’t want them to be euthanized because we’d spent so much time with them, we know what kind of dogs they are, and they’re good dogs.”

The rescuers were able to trap the last dog yesterday before Fort Worth Animal Control could step in.

“We in Johnson County are appreciative for their help and all those who were willing to participate,” said Johnson County Commissioner Rick Bailey.

  • Mama dog found in ‘bad shape’ needed a home. Then came the ‘perfect match’

    [ad_1]

Snowball the mama dog got a fresh start in North Carolina.

Snowball the mama dog got a fresh start in North Carolina.

    Asheville Humane Society

A mama dog found in “bad shape” was saved — but she needed a home.

Then came the good news that the rescued dog got the “perfect match,” according to a North Carolina animal shelter.

“The family who adopted Snowball had previously lost their beloved dog, who was similar to Snowball,” Becca Andrews, marketing coordinator for the Asheville Humane Society, told McClatchy News in a Sept. 29 email. “When the couple visited, Snowball went right up to them despite being aloof toward most people.”

The couple adopted Snowball, who has since been renamed Millie. The family in a Facebook post said the mama dog has brought “so much joy” as she settles into their home.

The heartwarming update came after Snowball and her puppies landed at the shelter in March. They were picked up as strays, but their rescuer them couldn’t keep them.

“When Snowball arrived at our rescue, she was in bad shape: matted fur, timid, and fiercely protective of her newborn puppies,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “Her past had clearly been rough and she had every reason to be wary of the world.”

Then, Snowball went through an “incredible change” as she started to build trust.

“After an expert grooming and placement in a warm, loving foster home, she slowly blossomed,” the shelter wrote. “Her first few days were tough; she would become scared and standoffish whenever anyone, but especially men, came close to her puppies.”

As the foster family showered her with patience, she became known as a “sweet” dog and a “great” mom to her two babies. Eventually, her pups — Kenai and Koda — both got new owners.

The following day, Snowball’s luck also took a turn for the better. The couple adopted her after she made an impression during their meet-up.

“She even went and sat comfortably in the lap of the man even though she was usually more timid around men,” Andrews wrote. “The adopters said that’s how they knew she was the one.”

  • How to support dog rescues | Animal Wellness Magazine

    [ad_1]

Find out how dog rescues work and the many ways you can support their lifesaving efforts — from fostering to fundraising.

Dog rescues play a vital role in the animal community. They help transition dogs from dangerous situations to “fur-ever” homes. Read on for details on how to support dog rescues, and what they do to save and find home for canines in need.

Do rescue organizations differ from shelters?

Unlike a shelter, most dog rescue organizations don’t have a physical location. Volunteer networks typically make up rescues. These networks nurture dogs in temporary foster homes while working to find permanent homes for them.

While many shelters have adopted a no-kill policy, some still euthanize animals due to overcrowding. They may also deem some animals unadoptable due to health or behavioral issues. A rescue focuses on saving the life of every dog wherever possible.

Note: Both rescues and shelters depend on volunteers and donations to continue operating.

Where do all the rescued dogs go?

After removing a dog from danger, the rescue organization arranges accommodations for her – usually a temporary foster home.

Foster volunteers play a key bridging role in saving canine lives. They give dogs a safe place to stay. They also help rehabilitate canine houseguests with physical or behavioral challenges. These challenges could be physical, like parasites or mange, or behavioral issues such as biting or house-soiling.

Rescues also provide temperament testing. This helps identify each dog’s issues, personality traits, and ideal placement — such as homes with cats, kids, or other dogs. This is not a quick and easy process. Dogs often feel overwhelmed during transitions. As a result, temperament tests may not fully reflect how they’ll interact with other animals.

Note: A dog usually reveals her true temperament only after weeks or months of adjustment.

“A dog doesn’t show his true personality until he’s been given time to decompress,” says Amy Powell, CPDT. “A dog’s behavior can be misinterpreted as docile when he is actually scared out of his mind and stunned into passivity.

“As the dog starts to feel more secure, he will begin to claim territory in his surroundings, and undesirable behaviors may begin to appear.” Amy compares this to “a shy child visiting a stranger’s home, who later turns into a wild child the moment he feels comfortable.”

Fostering arrangements can last months or even years, depending on how much support a dog needs.

How can I volunteer for a dog rescue?

The first step is to find a reputable rescue. If you’re looking for quick indicators, however, there unfortunately are none. No association currently certifies or accredits dog rescues. That means you’ll need to do your own research.

Check the rescue’s website. Ask for recommendations from other foster parents or ask the rescue for references. Screen rescues just as carefully as they should screen you. (If the rescue isn’t screening you, look for one that will.)

Note: Be aware that some scammers pose as dog rescues and learn to recognize the red flags.

A good rescue will provide dog-centered support for its volunteers. Look specifically for these characteristics:

    • Solid volunteer network in place
    • Careful screening of prospective foster parents and adoptive families
    • An emphasis on the overall safety and well-being of the dogs
    • Temperament testing to correctly match dogs with foster parents
    • A veterinarian who covers medical costs
    • Dog trainers to assist with behavioral issues
    • A policy to return dogs who don’t fit well with their foster families
    • Organized adoption events to help permanently re-home dogs
    • Equipment and supplies (if available) – e.g. humane collar, leash, crate, food, etc.

Note: You can donate any of the items listed above, if you choose this method of support over volunteering.

Avoid rescues with muddled paperwork or those looking for quick fixes. A good rescue will be particular about the homes where they place dogs. If a rescue doesn’t consider the dog’s long-term well-being, it’s not the right fit.

What are some other roles rescue volunteers can perform?

Although foster parents serve a critical role in the dog rescue community, there are many other ways you can help:

    • Transport dogs from bad situations to safety
    • Dog-sit or dog-walk
    • Locate and connect foster families with adoption events
    • Coordinate an adoption event or staff a table
    • Educate the public
    • Donate funds or supplies
    • Become part of a rescue dog’s marketing team
      • Write an attractive bio for the dog
      • Take a perfect photo to accompany the bio
      • Place ads for the dog’s bio
      • Find and attend adoption events
    • Be part of the adoptive family screening team
      • Screen applications
      • Perform background checks
      • Check references, including former veterinarians
      • Give phone interviews
      • Perform home visits
    • Be part of a buddy system (see sidebar on page xx)

Volunteering, donating, or adopting – exploring how to support dog rescues is very rewarding. Just be sure to do your research. Work only with rescues that prioritize the long-term health, happiness, and safety of their dogs.

    Where do rescues find dogs?

Rescue groups save dogs from six main sources:

    1. High-kill shelters
    2. Hoarding situations
    3. Rural areas
    4. Unwanted senior dogs
    5. Owner surrenders
    6. Foreign imports

Rescue groups build relationships with dog suppliers. They often persuade or pay them to surrender unwanted dogs. For example, Beth Buchter and Kathy Styer of Leo’s Helping Paws Rescue, based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, formed relationships with Amish and Mennonite puppy mill owners who discard unsold puppies.

The rescue often transports 30 to 40 dogs at once, but they can’t save them all. “It’s hard to leave behind those the puppy mills aren’t done with yet,” says Kathy. “There are never enough resources to care for the numbers you want to care for.”

What’s a dog rescue buddy system?

Some rescues build community networks that act as support groups. This buddy system can help answer any questions foster and adoptive parents will undoubtedly have about their new canine family members.

A buddy system helps educate new dog parents. It gives them someone to call for advice — and could mean the difference between a dog being returned or finding a “furr-ever” home.

  • Two adorable Yorkies play a role in landmark Gypsy revival. | Animal Wellness Magazine

    [ad_1]

Most of us are familiar with Gypsy Rose Lee, a 20th-century American striptease artist. She became famous for bringing style and sophistication to burlesque entertainment. What isn’t as well known is that she was an animal lover. She and her family had many companion animals during their lives, ranging from dogs and cats to birds and fish.

The latest revival of Gypsy, a Broadway musical based on Gypsy Rose Lee’s memoirs, features two canine actors alongside its human stars. These rescue dogs on Broadway include Tana June, a three-year-old Yorkshire Terrier who plays the part of family dog Chowsie, and Yorkie mix Indy as her understudy.

Gypsy is a landmark musical written by Author Laurents with music and lyrics by Jule Styne and Stephan Sondheim,” says Bill Berloni, a renowned animal trainer who adopts rescue dogs and trains them for the entertainment industry – Tana June and Indy included.

“The production is inspired by the real-life story of Gypsy Rose Lee, her sister June Havoc and their dominating mother, Rose, who will do anything to make her young daughters vaudeville stars. In the beginning of the show, we are introduced to the characters and their dog, Chowsie.”

Bill explains that he adopted Tana June and Indy from Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group in Elkhart, Indiana, specifically for this production.

“The biggest challenge of all is finding the right dogs for the job,” he says. “I look for dogs that would be right for the theater experience: dogs who are friendly, outgoing, food-motivated and can deal with a certain amount of stress.”

“Tana June is a sweet, outgoing girl who did very well with her theatrical debut. Indy is a puppy who was more work than his family asked for, so they gave him up for adoption. Tana June is very patient with her younger partner and they both love all the attention they get at the theater.”

While Tana June and Indy were exactly what Bill wanted for Gypsy, he still needed to desensitize them to theater conditions.

“In this show, the dogs are carried around by four different actors and their understudies,” he says. “We certainly trained for housebreaking and manners [as well].”

Bill uses only positive reinforcement training methods. And when Gypsy ends its run in August, these rescue dogs on Broadway will go to his 90-acre Connecticut farm, where he and his wife, Dorothy, care for many other retired canine actors.

In a touching video, Bruno Yovich, the founder of Save the Dogs, introduces himself and his organization. His enthusiasm is evident as he talks about the mission behind Save the Dogs.

Save the Dogs was created with a clear goal: to rescue dogs from a city shelter in Bosnia. This shelter was built to house only 300 dogs, but now it holds around 1,200 dogs in very poor conditions. This overcrowding shows how badly help is needed.

One of the most emotional parts of the video is the story of Ambo. Ambo was one of the first dogs rescued by Save the Dogs. His journey from neglect to receiving love and care demonstrates the powerful impact of the organization’s work.

Bruno shares a personal story about how he started rescuing dogs. He acknowledges that he had no previous experience with dogs before adopting Mia, a French Bulldog.  This unexpected event led him to discover a deep passion for helping dogs, which inspired him to start Save the Dogs. His story is relatable and inspiring, showing how a single act of kindness can grow into a larger mission.

Save the Dogs has grown a lot over the years. They have built a second ranch that can take care of 400-500 dogs and are currently looking after around 850 dogs from the city shelter. This growth shows their dedication to providing better lives for these animals.

The team at Save the Dogs focuses on rescuing dogs in the worst conditions, including those who have been involved in illegal dog fights. This part of their work is very challenging because it means dealing with dogs who have been through a lot of trauma and abuse. Their commitment to helping these vulnerable dogs highlights their dedication to animal welfare and rehabilitation.

Bruno’s ultimate dream is to find permanent homes for rescued dogs in Bosnia. He imagines a place where dogs are not just kept but are given love, medical care, and the freedom to live happy lives. This dream reflects the main values of Save the Dogs, showing how important it is to give every dog a good life.

The video ends with a strong message about the organization’s ongoing efforts to rescue more dogs and improve their lives. Despite the difficulties and sad situations they face, Bruno and his team are determined to keep going. Save the Dogs stands as a beacon of hope for the many dogs still in need, inspiring viewers to support and join their cause.

Pint Sized Cutie of A Dog Gets Rescued and Can’t Stop Grinning

    [ad_1]

Every dog is a gift, but Smile stands out with her cheerful grin. This little rescue dog perfectly lives up to her name. Her ever-present smile shows her happy and positive nature.

Smile’s life started with many challenges. She was born in Tijuana, Mexico, in a hoarding situation where many animals were kept in poor conditions. For years, Smile longed for love and care. Her early life was full of hardship, but she never lost hope. When Smile was finally rescued by No Dog Left Behind (NDLB), her joy was clear. She greeted her rescuers with a radiant smile as if she had known them forever. Stephanie Easley, the operations manager at NDLB, told The Dodo: “She made the intake team fall madly in love.”

Smile had been through a lot. Before her life changed with NDLB, she was one of 24 dogs saved by the At-Choo Foundation in California. Each of these dogs suffered from a painful skin condition, though Smile’s was not as severe. Despite her struggles, Smile’s resilience shone through. When NDLB in Minnesota heard about her story, they felt an immediate connection. They wrote in a Facebook post: “We heard her story, we saw her pictures, and we fell in love with the hope we saw in her eyes. Smile was destined to join our rescue.”

Moving from California to Minnesota wasn’t easy for Smile. With help from Mutt Mutt Engine, she started her journey full of hesitation and fear. But once she felt safe, her trust began to grow. “Once she was out of the van and not in a position of feeling backed into a corner, she was much better,” Easley told The Dodo. “She curled up in a ball and laid there, just watching the volunteers work.” Although Smile’s skin condition required isolation, the team continued to shower her with love. And Smile responded with her namesake grin.

Seeing Smile’s need for a nurturing environment, Easley became her foster mom. Their bond grew stronger each day, filled with smiles from both Smile and Easley. “The genuine love in her eyes is what makes her the most special dog I’ve ever met. They’re expressive … you know exactly what she’s thinking or feeling just by looking at them.” Easley cherished their bond but knew Smile deserved a forever home tailored just for her. Smile’s enchanting aura attracted many families, and after she healed, her dream came true.

  • Husky Dog Discovers Something ‘Concerning’ In Local Park

Husky Dog Discovers Something ‘Concerning’ In Local Park

    [ad_1]

Dogs are known for their loyalty and protective nature. They often sense when something is wrong and act accordingly. This was demonstrated by a Husky named Hel, who made an extraordinary discovery in a park in Birmingham, England.

Hel and his owner, Terry Walsh, were taking their usual walk during Thursday’s tea-time. As they strolled through the park, Hel began sniffing at a pile of blankets. At first, Walsh thought it was just a discarded blanket. But Hel’s persistent interest made him take a closer look. Inside the blankets, they found a newborn baby boy, peacefully sleeping.

Walsh described the moment, saying, “I turned round to grab hold of Hel so she didn’t walk over the glass, and she went off to the blanket, lying next to it, and started nudging it with her nose very gently.” This gentle nudging woke the baby, who then started to cry.

While it’s clear that Hel’s instincts played a crucial role, Walsh believes there was more to it. He feels that Hel was “sent from heaven to rescue a newborn baby boy.” This belief adds a spiritual dimension to the incredible discovery.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Walsh quickly contacted the authorities. The baby was found in an area known as The Mounds on Shannon Road. Authorities promptly arrived and took the baby to the hospital. Despite being just a few hours old, the newborn, named George, was found to be in good health.

Hel has been celebrated as a hero for his actions. Many people have suggested that Hel deserves a medal or some other form of recognition. Walsh emphasized how important Hel’s gentle nature was in ensuring the baby’s safety. He noted, “A bigger dog or another dog with a different temperament might well have just ripped and tugged at the blanket and the baby could have been treated like a rag doll and then you’ve also got the foxes and the rats and everything in there. How would they treat a baby?”

Following the discovery, there was an immediate search for the baby’s mother. Authorities were concerned that she might need urgent medical attention after giving birth. The search continued for months, with officials stressing the importance of finding and helping her. Eventually, eight months later, the mother was found.

The police ensured that the mother received the necessary support and care. They also asked the public to refrain from making judgments or speculations.

“As stated in our public appeals, our priority was always to ensure mom was safe and supported. We can confirm that no further action will be taken by us and, with partners, we are ensuring that she is getting the appropriate support and care she needs,” the statement read. “This is a very upsetting case, we would ask you not to speculate any further, as this is deeply distressing for those concerned.”

Hel’s heroic actions not only saved a newborn’s life but also highlighted the importance of compassion and quick response in such critical situations. The story of Hel and the baby named George serves as a reminder of the remarkable bond between humans and their canine companions, and how they can make a difference in the most unexpected ways.

‘Tiny’ 14-Year-Old Dog Left at Shelter with His Favorite Toy, Looking for a New Home

    [ad_1]

Emma’s story is one that touches the heart. She was left outside a shelter in a crate with just some blankets and toys.

At 14 years old and weighing only 4.5 pounds, Emma faced a scary and uncertain future until a kind couple, Adrian and Spencer, saw her picture on the shelter’s website.

Seeing this little old dog in need made them very sad, and they wanted to help. At first, they contacted the shelter to donate blankets or anything else to make Emma more comfortable.

But soon, they felt a deeper connection with her. They called her a “salt and pepper diva” and couldn’t resist her charm. Emma, their little velcro dog, followed them everywhere, seeking love and attention.

Emma’s past was tough. She had a strange way of walking, likely because she had spent too much time in a kennel.

Adrian and Spencer thought she had been kept in a small space for so long that her body had become stiff. But in their home, Emma began to move more freely, enjoying her ability to walk around again.

One of Emma’s cutest features is her little tongue that sticks out from the side of her mouth. This happens when she is happy, showing her comfort and joy. Emma is not alone in Adrian and Spencer’s home; they also care for other senior dogs, each with their own story.

From Gus, a senior Chihuahua, to Milly, a former street dog, and Eugene, a German Shorthaired Pointer, their home is filled with the gentle presence of older dogs.

Adrian and Spencer’s love for these senior dogs is clear. They treasure every moment with them, knowing how precious time is.

Their bond with these older dogs is strong, as they enjoy the love these dogs give and provide them with the care they need.

Emma’s transformation in her new home is heartwarming. From an abandoned dog left outside a shelter, she has become a loved family member.

Her story shows the power of love and care. With Adrian and Spencer, Emma will never doubt her worth again.

This story shows how strong the connection between humans and animals can be, especially those who have been through hard times.

Senior dogs, often overlooked for younger ones, have a lot of love to give. They deserve a chance at a happy life, and thanks to people like Adrian and Spencer, many are getting that chance.

  • Poor Puppy Cries After Being Left Alone by Family

Poor Puppy Cries After Being Left Alone by Family

    [ad_1]

Imagine a world where every puppy is showered with love from the very beginning. Unfortunately, this was not the case for a tiny puppy abandoned in a village deserving of nothing but affection.

Separated cruelly from his mother by heartless individuals, he was left alone to fend for himself. Confused and sad, he roamed the village, sniffing around for small bits of food. He couldn’t understand why his family had left him behind. Missing his mother terribly, the puppy couldn’t hold back his tears and cried out loud, hoping she might hear him and return.

When a rescue team got an emergency call about this abandoned puppy, they immediately sprang into action. They arrived at the village and started their search for the little one. They checked everywhere—the old rundown house, the dumpster—but he wasn’t there. Then, they heard something: loud cries from the nearby bushes. Following the sounds, they found the puppy, curled up in a corner, his eyes filled with tears, trembling with fear.

One of the rescuers stepped forward and gently cuddled the puppy, trying to soothe him. After feeding him, the frightened little one hid again in the bushes. But the rescuer didn’t give up. He began talking to the puppy in a sweet voice, and soon, the crying stopped. Feeling the genuine care and safety in the man’s actions, the puppy came out from his hiding spot. He was caressed and given the love he needed so much, making him feel happy and valued.

The rescuer picked up the puppy and placed him in the car. The little one felt at peace and quickly fell asleep. Along the way, they even picked up another pup who needed help. At the vet’s office, both puppies were checked and found to be in good spirits, cooperating well with the vet. Afterward, they were taken to a doggy park where they played and explored, wagging their tails, seemingly forgetting their past sorrows. The day ended with the puppies going to their new home.

The rescue team continued their care, giving the abandoned puppy a warm bath, which he thoroughly enjoyed. In the comfort of a loving home, he no longer felt lonely or scared. He began to believe that happier days were ahead.

With his whole heart, the adorable puppy now looks forward to the day he can meet his forever family. He dreams of hugging them tightly and showing them all the love he has stored up, eagerly waiting for that loving embrace.

Couple Takes a Year to Save Real-Life Scooby Doo and Make Him Happy Again

    [ad_1]

Joe and Marla, who had just settled into a serene village in Texas, are not just animal lovers but a couple who consider their pets part of the family. They brought their beloved dog, Samson, to their new home, where he continued to enjoy the boundless affection of his owners. However, this narrative extends beyond Samson to include another furry friend whose sudden appearance would endear him to Joe and Marla forever.

During a late summer day, Joe was on his usual nature walk when he heard a rustle from behind a bush. Expecting to see Samson, he was surprised to see a skinny, golden-haired dog instead. This dog resembled his favorite cartoon character, Scooby Doo, so much that Joe instantly knew he wanted to name him Scooby.

Initially, everything seemed fine, but Joe, an experienced dog owner, quickly noticed fear in the puppy’s eyes. Remembering a friend’s warning about the area being a common place for abandoning dogs, Joe understood the situation but still tried his best to approach the scared animal. As he suspected, the dog ran away as fast as it could.

Joe was disappointed but felt deep down that their encounter wasn’t the last.

Winter arrived with its biting cold and heavy snowfall, a rarity for Texas. During this time, Joe frequently talked about Scooby. Although Marla loved dogs deeply, she was skeptical about Scooby’s return. Despite this, Joe never doubted his feelings that Scooby would come back.

With the onset of spring, Joe’s hope was rewarded. One morning, he spotted something behind the bushes—it was Scooby. Prepared this time, Joe had brought along some dog food and managed to get closer to Scooby with a few snacks. Scooby seemed uneasy, but he quickly ate a cracker shaped like a dog’s paw and then disappeared again. Joe was now confident of a happy ending.

“Believe in the process Marla. It is never easy with dogs, but once you capture their heart, all patience will pay off,” Joe said. And just as he predicted, out of nowhere, their favorite pup appeared in the distance. “I told you so,” Joe exclaimed with a big smile. As Scooby approached Joe and Marla, he was still cautious. Joe realized something was missing and called out for Samson. The magic happened—seeing Samson seemed to reassure Scooby. Witnessing Samson’s happiness, Scooby felt secure enough to trust Joe and Marla and gradually became part of the family.

Scooby’s transformation was remarkable. From a fearful, abandoned “lone wolf,” he turned into a joyful, beloved family member. His renewed faith in love and happiness was now evident in every aspect of his life.

It might be true that Samson could have felt jealous of Scooby, as Scooby quickly became a cherished member of the family. But instead, he showed nothing but love. Scooby, who was always happy even during visits to the vet, proved how special he was, just as Joe had always told Marla. After living alone for over a year, Scooby also discovered his roots through a DNA test, which showed he was part American Staffordshire Terrier, German Shepherd Dog, and Great Dane.

Today, Scooby is one of the happiest dogs around, with a large, loving family and a budding fame on TikTok. This story of Scooby and his family is a powerful reminder that with persistence and love, anything is possible. Scooby’s life is now filled with joy, and he is forever grateful to his family for rescuing him.

  • Nonprofit Caribbean Dog Rescue Organizations in Crisis Over New CDC Ban

Nonprofit Caribbean Dog Rescue Organizations in Crisis Over New CDC Ban

    [ad_1]

Thousands of healthy, rabies-vaccinated dogs from rabies-free Caribbean islands at risk of being euthanized due to CDC ban, who would otherwise be given a new hope through adoption in loving homes.

A consortium of Caribbean dog rescue organizations, made of up Bruno Project Rescue, Inc., Caribbean Canine Connection and New Life for Paws Foundation, and known as the Caribbean Dog Rescue Coalition, is speaking up against a newly imposed CDC ban on importing dogs in the United States. The ban, which was designed to control rabies outbreaks in the U.S., will go into effect August 1, 2024. This ban only mentions dogs as a species, preventing entry until 6 months of age even if they are fully vaccinated against rabies. The ban also excludes dogs from rabies-free Caribbean countries without recognition of their true vaccination status at 16-weeks-old or veterinary health certifications.

The Coalition is imploring the CDC to amend their August 1 ban to reduce the age of imported dogs from 6 months to 16 weeks, or to allow rabies-free countries to be exempt. The Coalition requests this amendment because a 6-month old Caribbean puppy will exceed an airline’s in-cabin weight limit of 20 pounds. The organizations of the Coalition can only rescue dogs by airlifting them off the islands.

This move has sent concern among the Coalition who argue that the new regulation makes it impossible for the adopted animal to travel with the adopter as the required paperwork and tests will take too long to obtain and the dogs will become too big to fly. This will result in the euthanization of thousands of dogs a year who would otherwise be given a new hope through adoption in loving homes, far from the hardship of their origins. All rescued dogs and rescue organizations in rabies-free countries will be unnecessarily harmed by this ban.

The Coalition highlights that existing Caribbean Island rescue health protocols fall in line with the guidelines for required and recommended health care as outlined by the American Veterinarian Medical Association. “With the dog receiving a rabies vaccination at 12-weeks-old and adhering to strict health protocols, we oppose this blanket ban and to wait 24 weeks as the dog will be fully vaccinated 28 days after the date of injection,” said Linda Gunville, Lead Flight Coordinator for Bruno Project Rescue, Inc.

“We respect the CDC and understand the ban has good intensions as rabies is a lethal disease. This ban will undo years of hard work that rescuers have passionately committed to these dogs. For decades, volunteers have dedicated their lives to advocating and caring for these vulnerable animals which includes making sure they are medically compliant with export, import, federal, state and airline requirements. We do not stop caring for them just because they’ve left the island, we make sure they are healthy and safe for as long as they live.”

The Caribbean Dog Rescue Coalition is composed of fervent volunteers who are committed to the rescue and welfare of the indigenous Caribbean dogs. They are calling for public support to pressure the CDC to reconsider its stance. They urge animal lovers and advocates to join their campaign to protect these vulnerable animals.

Hugging Photo Saves Dogs from Being Euthanized, Gives Them New Chance

    [ad_1]

The story of Kala and Keira shows how social media can be a powerful force for good when used effectively. These two lovely dogs got a second chance at life because of a touching photograph that captured hearts around the world. Facing imminent euthanasia in a shelter, a photo of Kala hugging Keira was posted online, highlighting their deep bond and desperate need for a home. The image quickly went viral, reaching thousands of people who were moved by their plight. Thanks to the widespread attention and outpouring of support, Kala and Keira were adopted together, proving the incredible impact of social media in creating happy endings for animals in need.

In a race against time, a community of animal lovers rallied together quickly after seeing a heartbreaking photo of two shelter dogs, Kala and Keira. The dogs were about to be euthanized but managed to capture the world’s attention just in time.

In the photo, Kala, a brown hound mix, is seen hugging her friend Keira, a boxer mix. The desperation in their situation was clearly conveyed in their expressions and body language, particularly Kala’s, who seemed to be pleading for help. The picture was accompanied by a caption that read:

“I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. Keira is black and not a ‘real boxer,’ just a mix. She’s so brave, and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave, too, but I don’t know if I can be. Can you see our faces? Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She’s putting on a brave face for sure, but I can feel her heart beating fast while I’m clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. She won’t come back, and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next, and I won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now, it’s over. Unless…”

This compelling message and the poignant image spurred people to share their story widely. Thankfully, just over two hours after the photo was shared by the Atlanta-based charity Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, Kala and Keira were safe and on their way to a foster home.

The next big challenge was finding someone who would adopt both dogs together. Although it was hard to find someone to take two dogs, the rescue organization knew it was important for Kala and Keira to stay together. Anne Clarke from the rescue center explained:

“Keira would do well being adopted alone, but Kala would definitely miss her, so we are trying to adopt them together.”

Their story eventually touched the hearts of two individuals from Georgia who decided to adopt both Kala and Keira. Now, the dogs are living happily, enjoying every moment with lots of love, play, and affection.

Kala and Keira’s story goes beyond their rescue; it shines a light on the ongoing challenges faced by homeless animals. Thanks to the support of donors and volunteers, rescue organizations continue to work tirelessly to save more animals like Kala and Keira. Their story is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together in support of a common cause.

  • Puppy Found Roadside With Broken Back Finds Help from Unexpected Friend

Puppy Found Roadside With Broken Back Finds Help from Unexpected Friend

    [ad_1]

The world often presents stories of cruelty that are hard to understand, especially when those suffering are the ones who can least defend themselves. One such victim was General, a dog found abandoned and in dire need of help. A kind-hearted passerby discovered him lying on the street, unable to move his back legs. This person did what they could by giving General food and water and then urgently calling for additional help.

“The heartless acts of some people continue to shock us every day. Unfortunately, those who need them the most are often the main targets of their cruelty.”

A rescue worker responded to the call and rushed to the scene. She found General sheltered under a box, placed there by the passerby to shield him from the sun. The sight of the paralyzed and helpless dog spurred her into immediate action.

Upon arriving at the veterinary clinic, it was quickly discovered that General was severely underweight at only 3.5 pounds. More devastating, however, was the diagnosis that his spine was broken. Emergency surgery was the only option to save his life.

“Every now and then, we come across stories about abandoned, neglected, or abused animals that truly break hearts.”

The surgery was challenging but successful. Despite the odds, General displayed immense courage during his recovery, enduring not only the initial surgery but also subsequent medical treatments and another smaller operation. His determination and joyful spirit began to shine through as he made slow but positive progress.

After nearly three weeks of intensive care, General was strong enough to leave the hospital. He was placed in a foster home under the care of the woman who had rescued him, where he would continue to recover and hopefully find a permanent home.

It didn’t take long for a family to fall in love with General and decide to adopt him. Despite his disability and the fact that he couldn’t walk properly, they embraced him wholeheartedly.

“Despite his disability and the fact that he wasn’t able to walk properly, General was welcomed with open arms in his new home.”

General’s new family was committed to improving his quality of life. They sought various treatments to help him walk, including a consultation for stem therapy. Despite the vet’s doubts about the likelihood of General walking again, the family remained hopeful and pursued the recommended therapy. Unfortunately, the vet’s initial predictions were correct, and the therapy did not enable General to walk again.

Though General would remain paralyzed, this setback didn’t dampen his spirit. His family helped him adapt to his new limitations by getting him a specially designed dog wheelchair. After a few tries, General mastered the use of his new aid, regaining some independence and the ability to explore and play like other dogs.

“Neither the fact that he was left on the street, nor that someone mercilessly broke his spine, nor the fact that he will remain paralyzed forever destroyed General’s will to live.”

General continues to enjoy every day with enthusiasm and love, surrounded by a family that adores him and canine siblings that play with him. His story is not just one of survival, but a powerful example of how compassion and resilience can triumph over adversity.

Abandoned Pup At Shelter Longs For A Family To Love Him

    [ad_1]

In the quiet corners of a local animal shelter, a forlorn pup named Charlie waits patiently, his eyes filled with hope each time footsteps approach his enclosure. Abandoned and longing for a family, Charlie’s story is one that tugs at the heartstrings of all who meet him. Despite his cheerful demeanor and wagging tail, the sadness of his situation is palpable—he is a dog full of love with no one to share it with.

Charlie’s days are spent watching potential adopters pass by, many stopping to offer a sympathetic pat or a kind word, yet none committing to take him home. Each night, he curls up alone, dreaming of a family to call his own. The shelter staff do their best to provide care and affection, but what Charlie needs most is a forever home where he can flourish and feel secure.

As he waits, Charlie’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the countless other dogs in shelters worldwide, each eagerly awaiting someone to recognize their potential and offer them the loving home they deserve. His longing for a family underscores the emotional impact of abandonment on animals and the urgent need for compassionate individuals to consider adoption.

Adopting a dog like Charlie can be a transformative experience for both the animal and the adopter. It’s a chance to not only save a life but to enrich your own with the unconditional love and loyalty that dogs so freely give. If you or someone you know has been thinking about adding a furry member to the family, remember Charlie and the many others like him who could bring joy and companionship into your life.

Drake, a very sweet dog, was very sad when his family left him at a shelter because they didn’t have time for him. Drake didn’t understand why he had to leave his home. He felt very hurt and confused.

The people at the shelter were very kind to Drake. They were nice to him and made him feel better. A volunteer named Ilona saw how sad Drake looked. She said, “He has such a big head and a big grin and such a muscular little body.” Ilona wanted to help him a lot.

Sadly, in Prince George’s County, people are not allowed to have pit bulls, so Drake couldn’t find a home there. The shelter was also full, and Drake was at risk of being put to sleep. But a kind shelter worker helped by calling Vindicated Pit Bull Rescue, who said they would take Drake.

Drake stayed in a foster home for a little while before moving to another foster home. But he had to leave that home too because of an emergency. He went back to his first foster home, where they were happy to have him again. Drake was then adopted by a family, and he was very happy to start a new life with them. But things didn’t work out because the family’s other dog didn’t get along with him, and they had to take him back to the shelter.

When Drake came back, he was very upset and anxious. He needed a place where he could feel safe and loved. The rescue group asked Ilona if she could take him in. They told her that Drake’s adoptive family had to give him up and they hoped Ilona could give him a stable and loving home.

Ilona and her husband decided to help. They already had a dog named Honey Pie and a baby, but they welcomed Drake. They made him feel safe and loved.

Drake started to act like Honey Pie, and they liked walking together. Drake is very loving and likes to give kisses to his foster family. “He really loves my husband, which is great. And he loves our baby so much. They have an incredible bond,” Ilona added.

Drake is still looking for a forever home. Ilona and her husband hope he finds a home where he is loved and never left again.

Abandoned Dog Still Waits for Owner at Old Home, Waiting For Them Come Back

    [ad_1]

After being abandoned, a dog searches for the family she lost. She keeps looking for them, walking around nearby houses. “She wasn’t interested in anybody else, just kept going around in circles around all the houses nearby,” showing how much she missed her home. This is truly heartbreaking.

    Neighbors Step In

The rescue team, with help from neighbors, successfully cornered the frightened dog. Despite her fear, she was calm and did not react aggressively. “She was really timid; she didn’t bite, she didn’t growl, she was very quiet,” one rescuer observed. This moment was crucial for ensuring her safety and beginning her path to a new life.

    Finding Trust Again

After being rescued, the dog received immediate medical attention. “She’d gone to the vet, she’d had her temperature taken, she’d had deworming, de-flea, all that sort of thing,” the rescuer explained. To help her adjust, she was given a quiet space in a garage with a blanket and open door. “I left her in the crate with a blanket in our garage with the door open… I knew she would probably need the space to get used to what the heck had just happened.”

Slowly, the dog began to explore her new environment. “Little by little, she’d come out of the garage door and have a sniff around,” showing signs of curiosity and adaptation. She visibly relaxed and showed signs of comfort, “The moment she kind of came into the garden and sat around us, could almost see her yawn and stretch and let go of a lot of worry and anxiety.”

    A New Family

The next step was finding her a forever home. The rescuer’s father- Jo, initially seemed the perfect match. However, Jo’s family fell in love with her and decided to keep her. Jo had to break this news to her father, “I felt really bad to call him a few days later and say, um, actually we’ve all fallen in love with her, and I think that maybe we’re going to keep her. But he was okay with it.”

  • Couple Spent $15000 For Their Adopted Stray Dog

Couple Spent $15000 For Their Adopted Stray Dog

    [ad_1]

Home is not just a place, but a feeling.” This truth resonates deeply in the story of a small street dog in India, who found not just shelter but a sense of belonging with a couple. Jalebi, named for the sweet Indian treat, faced daunting challenges on the harsh streets, yet her life was transformed by the kindness of those once strangers, now her couple. This is their story.

    Cuts And Bites

The couple had come to India for a year. During their regular morning walks, they stumbled upon Jalebi hiding under a car, trying to escape from other street dogs that bullied her.“She just turned up… sitting under a car,”. These dogs didn’t like her, and she was often seen perched on top of cars, trying to stay safe. She got many cuts and bites from these fights, and the couple would care for her wounds with antibiotics.

Jalebi’s loneliness struck a chord with the family. Unlike other street dogs, Jalebi “had that loneliness,” and her excitement upon their return was unmistakable: “she would just get so excited every time we would come home.” As winter approached, the family’s bond with Jalebi had deepened profoundly. They decided to open their gates to her, and from that moment, Jalebi chose their home as her sanctuary. “She just decided that she was going to live at our house,” they shared.

    It Wasn’t Easy

However, their time in India ended, and the family faced the challenge of bringing Jalebi to Australia, complicated by India’s high-risk rabies status. “We couldn’t get rid of her. We live in Australia, and when we were leaving India in January, it was still another month or two before Jalebi was allowed to leave India because of the rabies blood tests,” they recounted.

The next step was a temporary stay in Delhi. “I was so upset that day that we took her to Delhi to drop her off at the homestay,” they shared. To meet Australia’s pet import rules, Jalebi then spent six months in France in the care of “an amazing lady.” This was needed to change her status from a high to a low rabies risk. The family anxiously awaited the time when they could reunite.

    Quarantine Situation

Due to full quarantine facilities in Australia, Jalebi first went to New Zealand. “The quarantine was so booked up that we decided to get her to New Zealand,” where she completed a 10-day quarantine. Their reunion was filled with emotion and joy. “As soon as she saw me, she recognized me and was begging and she did sort of this whiny mourn as if she’s crying or telling me off for leaving her for such a long time.”

Now living in New Zealand with the family, Jalebi has found peace, though she still shows signs of her difficult past. The journey’s cost, about $15,000, that goes to show their commitment, but as they put it: “It was worth it… we just feel so lucky that she chose us and came into our lives.” The couple plans to move back to Melbourne, Australia, with Jalebi  together in June.

‘She’s A Five-Legged Spectacle’ Pup Has An Unusual Hind Leg Condition Catches Attention of Many

    [ad_1]

In Kenosha, Wisconsin, a dog named Bella is winning hearts with her rare story. Bella isn’t just any dog—she was born with five legs, something very unusual and special. She’s really one of a kind.

    Bella Surrendered

Bella was given to the Wisconsin Humane Society, where the vets quickly noticed something different about her. They saw her extra leg and did some X-rays to understand more. What they found was astonishing and something they had never seen before in their 145-year history. Bella had a whole extra set of leg bones.

This genetic anomaly is rare,,’ is seldom seen in canines. Typically found in cattle, this phenomenon “dimilia” has only one or two other documented instances in dogs, according to the existing veterinary literature.

A closer look at her back paws shows two legs bones fused together. Bella’s extra leg, complete with an additional femur, tibia, fibula, and four extra toes, does not hinder her. She walks and runs just fine, a testament to her resilience and the care she receives.

    She’s One Of A Kind

Bella’s extra leg makes her look unique, but it’s her sweet nature that truly makes her special. Angela Speed, from the Humane Society, calls Bella a “unicorn of a dog.” Her condition might be rare, but it’s her loving personality that truly stands out.

Soon, Bella will be up for adoption at the Humane Society’s branch in Kenosha. The people there hope that Bella’s story will bring more attention to other dogs who need homes. They think Bella can help show how special all dogs are, no matter how they look.
