  • Should I Stay or Should I Go? When Is the Right Time to Seek Divorce

    [ad_1]

    Why Do Couples Divorce?

    Soft vs. Hard Reasons

There are several commonly reported contributors to divorce. Research reported in the Journal of Divorce and Remarriage distinguishes between “soft” reasons –  not being able to talk to each other, high levels of conflict and arguing, feeling lonely within the relationship – and ‘“hard” reasons such as abuse, addiction and infidelity.  Despite what you may think, the big dealbreaker issues are not the most common causes. All too often the couples report a variation of the soft theme of  “we just grew apart”.  Another study looked at the role of perceived happiness and beliefs about romantic love in the divorce decision making process. The ephemeral concept of being “in love” versus feeling more general love for a partner influences respondents’ attitudes toward the possibility of divorce in the future, as does whether a person believes it is important to work at both love and happiness within a relationship.

    The Blame Game

Not surprisingly, most of the people surveyed blamed their spouse for the divorce, not themselves. Now think about that. If I feel like I’ve “fallen out of love” with my partner and I believe this means we are not compatible and that my happiness lies elsewhere, I may end a relationship and suffer the often devastating consequences.

What if, instead of taking this unexamined path, I were to learn that relationship fluctuations are natural and expected, that the bloom for lust and love do settle down, and that communication can be learned and the distance between us can be bridged? This is what I teach in my 12-week Become Passion couples program. Many of my couples tell me that they were filing for divorce and took my program as a last chance effort – and that they were shocked to realize how little they knew about the predictors of divorce and the prescription for long term relationship health.

    Impact of Divorce

Anyone who has been through a divorce or breakup of any committed romantic relationship knows the aftermath is rough. There is plenty of research detailing the dire effects of divorce, but all you really need to do is look at your friends and your own history.

There can be significant negative impacts on everything from physical and mental health to finances to the effect on your children, family and social circle and much more. While few people leave a major relationship lightly, too many may do it for the wrong reasons, or for reasons that are valid but can be changed.

Now to be clear, sometimes a divorce is a wise solution to relationship troubles. I have no philosophical, moral, spiritual or clinical reason to be opposed to divorce – I myself was divorced two short years after the Mamma Mia wedding. But before you make a final decision, make sure to evaluate your motivations and consider the possibility that the two of you can create a more healthy and happy relationship together. This evaluation is very helpful whether or not or choose to stay or go, because clarity can help with your healing either way.

Signs You Are in Trouble – But Change is Possible

    Poor Communication

No matter how hard you try, it feels like every conversation turns into an argument. You are walking on eggshells or, in Gottman terms, are caught in negative sentiment override. There is a lot of criticism and the other horsemen have taken up residence in your living room. When you do have a more reasonable discussion it feels like your partner doesn’t understand you, which leaves you feeling frustrated and alone.

    Loss of Connection

You are living separate lives, stuck in what I call Marriage Inc. – where you run your household and family like a business but there is little or no “us”, just joint CEO’s making sure the mortgage gets paid and the kids get to school on time. There is little or no emotional connection, cuddling, or sexuality. It’s the dreaded “roommates  not lovers”.

    Trust Betrayal

Whether your trust has been betrayed by a big event like infidelity or discovering your partner has spent all of your carefully accumulated savings behind your back, or trust has been slowly worn down by a cumulation of broken promises, lack of trust is a major problem that must be addressed.

    If You’re Thinking of Leaving

You probably ask yourself questions like:

    “Should I get a divorce?”

“How can I get emotional clarity about whether to stay or go?”

“When is it time to let go of my relationship?”

The Cycle of Thoughts and Emotions

Perhaps you’ve been unhappy in your relationship for a long time. Maybe you feel like you are the only one lobbying for more. You don’t know whether to stay or go. You dream about future happiness, yet you know the emotional, financial and family toll that usually follows in the wake of divorce. This state of psychological ambivalence – feeling both pulled to stay AND pulled to leave – is extremely uncomfortable. Spending endless hours in a paralyzing cycle of pros and cons, fear and hope, doubt and temporary certainty is emotionally exhausting.

You want to get away from this person you believe doesn’t give you what you desire, this person who disappoints you, takes you for granted, and frankly annoys or angers you on a daily basis. You don’t like who you’ve become – critical, negative, clingy and demanding. All too often it feels like the right decision is to leave.

And yet…despite all these factors, leaving your relationship may not be the solution. It might surprise you to learn that the outcome does not always deliver the results you hope for. It is difficult to accurately quantify the percentage of partners who regret leaving a marriage, but a number of research surveys and studies indicate between 30-50% of respondents they feel they made a mistake and wish they’d tried harder to work things out. Why might that be?

    Regret

For an interesting perspective on why so many people regret the decision to divorce we can look at the work of happiness researcher and Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert. After all, when we think about filing for divorce, we are at heart looking for a way to escape from unhappiness. We believe there are more negatives than positives in this relationship. We fantasize about a better future where we are either happy alone or are happy in a new, better, relationship (with a new, better person than the one we are with now).

However, as Gilbert points out, we humans are lousy at predicting our future happiness. We imagine the future WILL be better than this, but we have no data and no way to know if that will be so. This sort of “future happiness bias” can lead us to make a major, life changing decision based on no real evidence.

Of course that doesn’t mean you should stay in an untenable situation. But given the regrets expressed by a significant percentage of divorced people – don’t rush into it. Consider the decision carefully and mindfully. It’s not as simple as getting rid of the person who you believe is causing your misery.  In my career, I’ve seen too many divorced individuals who left a marriage prematurely and unnecessarily – creating a permanent and devastating solution for a potentially temporary albeit very painful situation. I also see hundreds of couples each year that make major improvements by simply doing the work and getting the knowledge they need.

    How to Re-Evaluate

If things are not going well, think about these questions:

    • Are you in a temporary crisis that may change? Will you feel differently when these feelings settle or are you certain this is the end of your relationship?
    • What are the best and worst things you feel will happen if you do stay together?
    • What are the best and worst things you feel will happen if you divorce?
    • What part do you play in the unhappiness of this marriage? Do you focus on making time for each other, planning romance, creating time for conversations? Are YOU being a great partner?
    • Are you willing to seek professional help? Will your partner participate? If they will not, are you willing to seek help on your own to facilitate the possibility that you can learn to approach them in a manner that engages them in the relationship process?

    Next Steps

In two words? Get Help. You need to be able to understand your issues, explore the causes, work on communication and connection, and strengthen what I call your Passion Triangle  three key areas couples need to strengthen if they want a great relationship. You can take my free starter course to learn more about these. By actively working on these three areas, couples can build a stronger foundation for their relationship and significantly reduce the risk of divorce.

Take time. Slow down. You are likely in a stress crisis that may – or may not – be temporary. Because psychological ambivalence is so painful you may be tempted to resolve this ambivalence by making a firm decision. I encourage you to stay in the discomfort for a while longer while you evaluate your unique situation.

Take into account that people regret their decisions and future happiness is not guaranteed and there is significant clinical evidence that deeply troubled relationships can recover. Our perceptions are not always reality. Sometimes a temporary separation can help.  That’s what Howard and Karen – the couple I speak about in the video – did. They used the time apart to get professional help, then to take my program and learn what they simply didn’t know. Today they are happier than they’ve been in decades, going on wonderful trips to Europe, joining me and the other couples from my programs in Mexico for a fabulous workshop and couples celebration this year, planning surprises for each other and generally living their life to the fullest.

That’s a huge improvement from throwing your wedding crowns into the sea.

  • Carly Pearce confesses she instantly regretted marrying Michael Ray before quick divorce

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Carly Pearce admitted she knew immediately that she shouldn’t have married ex-husband Michael Ray.

The country crooner explained the relationship with fellow musician Ray was more about lust than love during an appearance on Bunnie XO’s podcast, “Dumb Blonde.” Despite marrying Ray for the right reasons, Pearce claimed the two weren’t living in reality.

“I thought he was so cute,” she told Jelly Roll’s wife while recalling her short-lived marriage. “I’d heard he’s the nicest guy in the world. I invited him to my (Billboard Country Airplay) No. 1 party for ‘Every Little Thing.’ Looking back on it, it was a hot and heavy lust. It wasn’t love. It was just passionate.

“I got married to go the distance. When I married him, it was for the right reasons,” Pearce insisted.

“I think that when you travel like this, I thought I was doing the right thing by waiting to get married till I was 29. But we didn’t have real conversations, and we didn’t really know about each other. We were kind of living this life that wasn’t really reality, now looking back on it. So, I just think we didn’t really know each other.

“I knew the night I got married that I shouldn’t have,” she admitted. “I think the best thing that ever happened to me was COVID because it allowed me to deal with that in private. I think that I probably would have stayed in it longer if I could have avoided it and not had to. … I was embarrassed when it happened … and I had shame around that and was heartbroken.”

Pearce filed for divorce in 2020 after eight months of marriage to the country singer.

“It wasn’t what I signed up for,” she explained. “It just wasn’t the marriage that I know I deserved. I knew that very quickly.

“And I think in the first — we were only married for eight months. Plenty happened to where it was very clear to me this was not, this just wasn’t a marriage.”

Pearce and Bunnie XO briefly touched on the speculation Ray had cheated on the singer during their marriage.

“People have all their opinions, and, at first, that was so hard for me because I was like, ‘That’s not true, that’s not true, that’s not true. What he’s saying isn’t true.’ But, at the end of the day, like my friends who walked that with me, they know,” she said. “My parents know and God knows, and that is enough. It’s enough.”

After the hardships Pearce faced during that year of her life, she found happiness after the divorce.

“I am in the happiest season of my life,” the “Should’ve Known Better” singer told Bunnie XO. “I’m — actually if I ever saw him, if he ever watches this, thank you, because you taught me more about myself. You taught me how strong I am. You put me through things that have made me better now. And I don’t wish him evil. I don’t wish anything on him. I’m so glad that I’m not in that anymore.

“I think I was really shown just how much I care about me,” Pearce added. “You know, like, I actually really have a lot of self-worth and that showed me that.”

Now a year removed from her separation from Joe Jonas, Sophie Turner can reflect on her marriage and all that came with it.

Now living in west London after moving to the United States with Jonas, Turner, 28, has embraced motherhood and is focused on setting an example for her two daughters, Willa and Delphine, who she shares with Jonas.

“Before I had kids, I was very depressed and anxious, and I would isolate [myself] a lot,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in a story published Wednesday, October 30. “Now, I think I live my life for them. I want them to see me having a social life and enjoying work and thriving in my career and relationships.”

It took a lot for Turner to get there. Jonas filed for divorce in September 2023, setting off a custody battle and legal proceedings that remain ongoing. Reflecting on the past year, Turner says her latest project, “kind of a horror film” with her Game of Thrones costar Kit Harrington, mirrored her real-life experience.

“It was a very cathartic experience for me,” she said. “It was a chance to let out some serious anger, which was fun. So that felt right for me to do.”

Though she has now moved on from her relationship with Jonas, Turner can look back on the good times.

“I’m going through a legal process right now where I can’t really say much, but it was incredibly sad,” she said. “We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard.”

One of the toughest parts of that time in her life was being away from home. She and Jonas married in Las Vegas, then lived together in Los Angeles and Miami.

Jonas and Turner were married for four years before news broke of their split in September 2023. The former couple previously welcomed daughter Willa in 2020 and another baby girl in 2022, […]

“I’m so happy to be back. It felt as if my life was on pause until I returned to England,” she said. “I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long — six years — and it was when my friends were getting engaged, and when I got pregnant. I went for dinner with someone the other day, and she said, ‘I never got to touch your belly.’ We didn’t have those key experiences with each other.”

The homesickness was real, and she coped with it the same way most anyone would — with food that reminded her of home.

“Every city we ended up in, the first thing I’d do was find a British shop and stock up on a month’s worth of chocolate,” she said, before adding that the events unfolding around her soon became overwhelming.

“The gun violence, Roe v. Wade being overturned … Everything just kind of piled on,” she added. “After the Uvalde [school] shooting, I knew it was time to get the f— out of there.”

Former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay is still healing from the end of her relationship to Bryan Abasolo and isn’t really to dive back into the dating scene just yet.

“Honestly, it’s not a focus right now,” Lindsay, 39, exclusively told Us Weekly at Project Angel Food’s 35th Anniversary Angel Awards Gala on Saturday, September 29. “I’m just trying to get through it. Then, get at me.”

Lindsay and Abasolo, 44, were married for four years after initially meeting on season 13 of The Bachelorette. Abasolo filed for divorce in January and Lindsay has since been focused on her self-improvement.

“Friends [and] family keep me empowered,” she explained to Us on the red carpet in Los Angeles. “I saw this quote the other day about romanticizing life and it was just learning about loving the simple things, whether it’s going on a walk, whether it’s just being thankful for the air that we breathe [or] whether it’s just like laughing with a friend.”

It’s still a struggle daily, but emotionally, I felt I was very sure this was what I wanted to do.”

Being in large crowds often made Lindsay feel “uncomfortable” and anxious.

The former attorney added, “Slowly but surely, I started to gain my confidence back. I started skiing — I’ve never been skiing in my life — but I, weirdly, was good at it. … People say it’s harder to learn as an adult [but] I wasn’t afraid ‘cause I was in a place where I felt cold. • Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan finalize their divorce after 6 years and avoid trial

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan finalize their divorce after 6 years and avoid trial

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actors Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan have reached a settlement to finalize their divorce and avoid a forthcoming trial, six years after she first filed to end their marriage and years after both entered other long-term relationships.

The couple stipulated to the terms in a court filing Wednesday. It means that Tatum and Dewan will avoid a trial, scheduled to begin in December, over the splitting of assets and custody of their 13-year-old daughter, Everly. The proceedings may have made many of their private details public.

Details of the settlement were kept confidential under the agreement, which must still be approved by a judge.

Both have long been in other relationships, Tatum with actor and director Zoë Kravitz and Dewan with actor Steve Kazee, with whom she has had two children.

Both Dewan and Tatum began their careers as dancers in music videos. They met as co-stars of the 2006 dance movie “Step Up.” They married in July 2009.

They announced their split in April 2018, saying jointly on social media that they had decided to “lovingly separate as a couple” but remained best friends.

She filed for divorce six months later, and in November of 2019, a judge declared them divorced and single. But a yearslong fight over finances and custody continued and appeared to be growing more heated as the trial approached.

Before the settlement, Dewan had been arguing for two separate trials, one over custody and one over finances. Tatum had objected.

Tatum starred in the “Magic Mike” movies and “21 Jump Street.” He has an extended cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine” and recently appeared as the lead in the Kravitz-directed “Blink Twice,” but Tatum acted very little in the years immediately after the split.

“Time just kind of got away,” Tatum told The Associated Press in 2022. “Really, being a dad sort of just swept me away for almost four years. I kind of got lost in doing that.”

Dewan appeared in several other dance films after “Step It Up” and is now a regular on the ABC series “The Rookie.”

Jennifer Lopez has broken her silence after she filed for divorce from Ben Affleck with an end-of-summer photo dump.

“Oh, it was a summer,” Lopez, 55, wrote via Instagram, alongside a carousel of photos from her summer in her first personal social media post since her divorce filing from Affleck, 52, earlier this month. Among the photos — which included a snap of the singer posing with her sister Lynda Lopez — was a quote that read, “Everything is unfolding in divine order.” Another photo showed Lopez wearing a shirt that reads, “She’s in bloom and unbothered, out of reach and at peace.”

Us Weekly confirmed on August 20 that Lopez filed for divorce in Los Angeles after two years of marriage. The singer listed the pair’s date of separation as April 26, and the paperwork was filed on the anniversary of their 2022 wedding at Affleck’s Georgia estate.

“The timing of the divorce was a big f—k you to Ben,” a source exclusively told Us in August.

Lopez and Affleck initially started dating in 2002 after costarring in Gigli. They got engaged but called off their wedding in 2004 due to heightened media attention. The twosome reunited in May 2021 after they both went through divorces and breakups. Lopez was married to Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins, Max and Emme, from 2014 until their 2011 split. She later got engaged to former MLB star Alex Rodriguez, calling it quits in 2021.

Affleck, meanwhile, finalized his divorce from Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three kids, in 2018 after 13 years of marriage.

Affleck proposed to Lopez for a second time in April 2022, and they eloped three months later in Las Vegas with their children as witnesses. Weeks later, Lopez and Affleck celebrated with a second wedding in Georgia.

Ahead of their divorce, Lopez and Affleck sparked breakup speculation as they appeared to spend more time apart. Us confirmed in May that Affleck moved out of their shared Los Angeles home.

In July, a second insider told Us that Lopez and Affleck were “doing their own thing” as they navigated their next steps.

“Jennifer suggested they just take time to figure it out,” the source added, while a third insider pointed out that Lopez and Affleck were “going through so much individually and as a couple.”

Lopez spent most of her summer on the East Coast with family — she had canceled her This Is Me … Now tour amid the split speculation — while Affleck remained in L.A. The pair noticeably didn’t celebrate her 55th birthday together in July.

“I want you to know on my birthday that YOU are my biggest gift,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “Besides my family and friends, you have always been there for me in the good times and in the tough times. I can always count on you. And I want you to know that you can always count on me. Thank you for your caring, your understanding, your loyalty and most importantly your love. 🤍 Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.”

The 7 Best Co-Parenting Apps to Improve Communication – POPSUGAR Australia

    [ad_1]

Co-Parenting comes with a host of challenges whether the parents get along or not. Navigating all the necessary information for kids from child support to custody dates to expenses can be overwhelming. The whole process becomes even more frustrating when communicating with the other parent causes friction.

The best co-parenting apps help make the experience easier to navigate for both parents and children. “Apps have provided a welcome vehicle to assist parents transitioning from warring gladiators to co-parenting collaborators,” family law attorney Vicki L. Shemin, JD, tells PS.

Adjusting to a new normal after divorce can take some getting used to but Shemin explains that “apps can rescue parents from co-parenting uncertainty and dread by providing a single platform for managing all aspects of their co-parenting responsibilities.” She shared that while “some may have a cost, they are a lot less expensive than working through attorneys!”

Using a dedicated app to track all co-parenting tasks will take a collaborative effort between both parents. Each parent needs to agree on an app to use and put the effort into using it appropriately. This can be a challenge all its own, but if you’re struggling with the other parent, you can get the use of a co-parenting app court-ordered.

To help you navigate co-parenting with power and ease, PS rounded up the best co-parenting apps that are all court-approved.

The app’s user-friendly interface, along with features like shared calendars, file storage, and payment tracking, helps parents stay organized and maintain clear, consistent communication.TalkingParents has a free version with features that are limited to messaging and calendars. The app’s focus on privacy means that all personal information is safeguarded against unauthorized access.

A key feature of Fayr is the ability to drop a geo pin on a particular location. For parents who need to meet up for custody exchanges or other purposes, Shemin shared that this offers indisputable evidence that either party was there when they were supposed to be. This feature is useful for those in situations where inaccurate claims are made during meetings.

Joey Lawrence ‘Relieved’ Marriage To Estranged Wife Is Over – They ‘Had Troubles From The Beginning,’ Claims Source – Perez Hilton

    [ad_1]

Were Joey Lawrence and Samantha Cope doomed from the start? That’s what the latest report seems to suggest.

As we’ve been following, Samantha filed for divorce from the Melissa & Joey alum earlier this month and is seeking sole custody of their 19-month-old daughter Dylan. Days later, reports surfaced alleging Joey has been involved in an ongoing affair with his Socked in for Christmas co-star Melina Alves, who is also apparently going through a divorce because of the infidelity. A source later revealed Samantha attempted therapy with Joey, but that he pretty much derailed any chance of patching up their marriage. It’s super sad stuff. You can read more about it HERE.

But now, an insider is claiming Joey’s alleged affair was NOT what ruined his and Samatha’s relationship!

Related: Ben Affleck ‘Has Not Been In Touch’ With Jennifer Lopez’s Kids Amid Divorce Drama

On Sunday, a source told People the pair “had troubles from the beginning of their relationship.” Hmmm. Well it did seem rather rushed… We mean, it was just three months after Joey finalized his divorce from ex-wife Chandie Yawn-Nelson!

    The source claimed:

“Infidelity isn’t the cause … not by a long shot.”

Inneresting… The source didn’t necessarily deny the infidelity — just the part about it being the reason he and Samantha are splitting up.

    The insider added:

“[Joey] had gotten to a point where he had hit his limit with defending his kids, his mom and his family to Samantha.”

There weren’t many other details regarding that claim, specifically, but the Blossom star shares daughters Charleston, 18, and Liberty, 14, with ex-wife Chandie.

As for Samantha seeking sole custody of their daughter Dylan, the source claimed Joey is “torn up.” They explained:

“Joey loves his kids. He is a great dad and his daughters adore him. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for those girls, and that includes Dylan too. He prides himself on being very involved with family and putting family first always. He loves Dylan. He’s torn up that it’s going to be difficult to co-parent Dylan with the demands Samantha has made. Joey is a man of integrity. He is a hard worker. He is a professional.”

A man of integrity… Who’s currently caught up in cheating rumors…

A the end of the day, though, the insider noted the 48-year-old is “relieved the marriage is over because he can breathe … He can be himself. He’s taking the time to make up for all of the lost time that he had with his children.”

So it sounds like his and Samantha’s marriage drove a wedge between his relationship with his oldest daughters. Well, the proximity of his relationship with her and their mom Chandie, alone, would likely be enough to ruffle feathers. But we guess we’ll just have to wait for more specific deets.

Whoa! Ben Affleck Upset At Mindy Kaling For Her ‘Frustrating’ Joke About Jennifer Lopez Divorce At The DNC! – Perez Hilton

    [ad_1]

Ben Affleck is not a fan of his personal life being joked about!

In case you missed it, Mindy Kaling hosted part of the third night of the Democratic National Convention earlier this week, and she could not help but make a comment about the actor’s divorce from Jennifer Lopez while shouting out Massachusetts! She said at one point:

“I love you, Massachusetts! Everyone is always hating on us. But they just don’t get it. Go Sox! … Ben Affleck, hang in there! Dunkin’ Donuts, you’re the best coffee in the world.”

Related: How Jennifer Garner Really Feels About Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez Divorce!

LOLz! Check out her hilarious speech (below):

Many undoubtedly chuckled at her remark. But you know who didn’t? Ben! According to a Dailymail.com source on Friday, the 52-year-old filmmaker was very disappointed Mindy would bring up his breakup with J.Lo at a political event:

“Though it was in the moment, though it was said in jest, when Ben found out that he was brought up at the DNC by Mindy, it was a full-face palm moment. The last place he would have ever expected and wanted to be talked about, especially about his divorce, would be at a political convention.”

While Ben doesn’t plan to publicly bash the comedian, he does hope his peers will refrain from talking about his personal business moving forward:

“He isn’t going to call out Mindy, but this was just a moment where he would love for people to know, especially ones that are meant to be his peers in Hollywood, to just not talk about his personal life.”

Ben apparently cannot take a joke! Yeesh! However, we all know how much the Gone Girl star values his privacy! Heck, it is one of the main reasons we have heard so far about why Ben and Jennnifer called it quits again! He grew sick of compromising on the fame matter! Yet you would think a harmless joke like the one Mindy made wouldn’t have bothered him as much, right? All she said was to “hang in there.” If anything, it was a very kind comment — especially in comparison to what folks on the internet have said about the divorce! But Ben didn’t see it that way it seems. Instead, The Office alum just caused him more of “a headache” with her “frustrating” joke! The Dailymail.com source continued:

“This will go away, and people will forget about it, but it’s just the constant talk about his relationship with JLo that is a main reason it didn’t work out this second time around. Ben values his privacy and to deal with adversity in the public eye is a stress filled situation for him and when people bring it up who are in his community, so to speak, is just frustrating. Even though Mindy wasn’t looking to cause a headache for Ben, she did provide one.”

    Damn…

Despite his feelings over the matter, he doesn’t expect Mindy to apologize:

“He doesn’t want an apology, an excuse or anything, what was said is what was said, time to move on. He just wishes that he didn’t have to move on from anything at all. He just wants to be known for his work and being a great father, not from any mistakes or misfortune that happens in his life. Mindy did her thing, and he is refusing to make it a thing, it was a brief inconvenient moment to deal with, time to turn his attention to more important things in life.”

Let this be a warning to comedians: Don’t poke fun at Ben’s divorce drama. It turns out he cannot take the heat! Thoughts, Perezcious readers? Did you think Mindy’s joke was that bad? Sound OFF in the comments!

  • Jennifer Lopez files for divorce from Ben Affleck after 2 years of marriage

Jennifer Lopez files for divorce from Ben Affleck after 2 years of marriage

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES — After a relationship that spanned two decades, two engagements, two weddings and headlines too numerous to count, Jennifer Lopez has filed for divorce from Ben Affleck.

The filing Tuesday in Los Angeles brought to an apparent end a celebrity coupling — or at least the second installment of it — that dazzled from the very heights of the pop culture firmament and emblazoned countless tabloid covers. The pair became known, even before such power-couple portmanteaus were ubiquitous, as “Bennifer.”

Court records showed Lopez filed the petition Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The news was first reported by the TMZ website. TMZ reported further that Lopez listed the date of separation as April 26, 2024. It added that she did not mention any prenuptial agreement.

After meeting, falling in love and getting engaged in the early 2000s — and starring together in 2003’s infamous “Gigli” and 2004’s “Jersey Girl” — the couple parted ways, blaming in part the pressure of the public eye.

But to the delight of many and perhaps the skepticism of others, they reunited two decades later and married — twice — in 2022.

“Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” wrote Lopez, announcing their first, quickie Las Vegas wedding that July, and signing off as Jennifer Lynn Affleck.

“Stick around long enough and maybe you’ll find the best moment of your life in a drive through in Las Vegas at 12:30 in the morning in the tunnel of love drive through with your kids and the one you’ll spend forever with,” she wrote in her newsletter.

The couple had flown to Las Vegas, lined up with their license with four other couples and were wed just after midnight at A Little White Wedding Chapel, where Lopez said a Bluetooth speaker played their brief march down the aisle. She called it the best night of the couple’s lives.

A month later, they had a much grander wedding at Affleck’s house in Georgia, in front of friends and family.

Both of them had been previously married. Affleck, 52, married Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three children, in 2005. They divorced in 2018.

Lopez, 55, had been married three times before. She was briefly married to Ojani Noa from 1997-1998 and to Cris Judd from 2001-2003. She and singer Marc Anthony were married for a decade, having wed in 2004, and share 14-year-old twins. She started dating former baseball player Alex Rodriguez in 2017, but the couple called off their engagement in 2021.

All along, it had been Lopez who was more vocal in describing her and Affleck’s journey. When asked earlier this year whether she was harder on herself because her relationships had been so high-profile, Lopez agreed.

“Oh yeah. 100%. It’s made me doubt myself and really feel bad about myself at times. Made me feel like I wanted to quit at times. But at the end of the day, I feel like you kind of have to do this thing where you learn how to navigate it,” she told The Associated Press. “You take the things that could be constructive about that and use it, and the rest you kind of just throw away as kind of like haterations or, you know, other things like that and just be like, ‘Whatever. I know who I am, I know what I want to do.’ ”

Affleck himself expressed admiration for her self-possession, telling the AP last year that he agreed with the idea that Hollywood was unsure how to capitalize on her wide-ranging talent.

“I think she’s in her prime,” Affleck said then. “She’s doing extraordinary work in large measure because she’s taking that step to take responsibility for what she’s doing rather than say, ‘This is what I’m being offered.’ ”

Lopez is starring in the upcoming “Unstoppable,” under Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity banner.

In May, she starred in the Netflix movie “Atlas.” At the end of the month, she suddenly canceled her 2024 North American tour, saying she was “heartsick and devastated” to be letting fans down but the move was necessary. “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” organizers said in a statement.

The tour was to be her first in five years, in support of her first solo album in a decade, “This Is Me… Now” and its companion film. a fictionalized look at her long love life, and a documentary.

“When I was a girl they’d ask me what I’d be. A woman in love is what I grew up wantin’ to be,” Lopez sang on the title track.

The album, she said, was inspired by her rekindled relationship with Affleck. But the film was more “about your journey as a person, it’s about one person’s journey and what it takes to get from heartbreak back to love. Or a hopeless romantic’s journey in their search for love.” In the movie, she played a character called The Artist who, similarly, had decided as a child what she wanted to be when she grew up: “in love.”

But the road was rocky. In an early scene, The Artist is on the back of a motorcycle, riding across a beach, with a hunky man, face shielded. Then the motorcycle crashes.

“Not all love stories have a happy ending,” she says.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have called it quits after two years of marriage — but how long has it been since they made an official public appearance together?

Lopez, 55, filed for divorce from Affleck, 52, on Tuesday, August 20. The news came 189 days — or a little more than six months — since the pair attended their final public event as a couple on February 13, where they walked the red carpet at the premiere for Lopez’s This Is Me … Now: A Love Story project.

Just one day before Valentine’s day, Affleck showed his support for Lopez’s movie, which combined music and visuals to help reimagine true life events that inspired Lopez’s This Is Me … Now album. (The record serves as a sequel to 2002’s This Is Me … Then, which was dedicated to Affleck.)

On the carpet, the twosome were all smiles as they packed on the PDA, sharing a few sweet smooches and gazing longingly into each other’s eyes as photographers snapped their photos. They even colored coordinated for the night out, with Lopez donning a black gown with a sheer skirt and Affleck matching her in a black and white suit.

As rumors of a tension continued to swirl, Us Weekly confirmed in  May that Affleck moved out of his and Lopez’s shared home in Beverly Hills. In July, neither Lopez nor Affleck publicly acknowledged their second wedding anniversary.

At the time, a source exclusively told Us that the couple were “living separate lives” as they navigated their ups and downs, noting that Lopez “suggested they just take time to figure it out.”

More Details On Jennifer Lopez Filing For Divorce From Ben Affleck

According to TMZ, Lopez officially filed the documents in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Furthermore, the outlet noted that unlike most filings — usually made on the client’s behalf by an attorney — Lopez did this one herself.

To raise eyebrows even further, the outlet notes that Lopez’s filing today arrives on the second anniversary of her and Ben’s second wedding ceremony. Page Six notes that the pair initially eloped in Las Vegas in July 2022. However, on August 20, 2022, the pair officially tied the knot with a wedding ceremony in Georgia.

Furthermore, per TMZ, Lopez has reportedly listed her and Affleck’s date of separation as April 26, 2024. Additionally, the singer’s documents reportedly do not state whether she and Affleck have a prenuptial agreement. Sources have reportedly informed the outlet that there is none in place.

“That would mean whatever earnings, or profit, Ben and Jen made during their nearly 2 years of marriage is community property,” the outlet states.

Lastly, TMZ notes that Lopez has reportedly waived her interest in spousal support and is allegedly asking a judge “to deny Ben such support as well.”

    Social Media Reacts

Social media users have reacted to Lopez’s divorce filing in The Shade Room’s comment section. To note, this marks the nearing end of the singer’s fourth marriage and Affleck’s second.

Here’s What’s Recently Been Reported About The Pair

As The Shade Room previously reported, Lopez announced her engagement to Affleck in April 2022. The pair had reportedly rekindled their romance the year earlier after dating and even getting engaged in the early 2000s.

Then, in July of that year, J. Lo confirmed that she and Affleck walked down the aisle in a Las Vegas ceremony, per The Shade Room.

“We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” she wrote in a newsletter reportedly sent to her fans at the time.

Fast forward, to earlier this year, reports surfaced that Lopez and her husband were living separately, per The Shade Room. However, in May, the pair were spotted together and this appeared to quell speculation about their impending split.

Later that month, Lopez even went viral for checking a reporter who asked about her and Affleck possibly separating, per The Shade Room.

A parents’ guide to home down payment gifts and loans – MoneySense

    [ad_1]

    Loan forgiveness is an option

If you loan money to a child, you can forgive the loan during your life or upon your death. Of course, you should only do so if you know you won’t need or want the money back in the future.

If you have loaned different amounts of money to your children, documenting the loans can help ensure an equal division of your estate. Some wills include a so-called “hotchpot” clause that accounts for all loans outstanding, so that one child does not receive a disproportionate gift or forgiven loan, as well as an equal share of the estate.

What are the tax implications of a gift or loan?

There are generally no tax implications to gifting in Canada. This differs from the U.S., which has a gift tax. U.S. citizens in Canada still need to be mindful of these U.S. implications. Only two situations may trigger additional income taxes for the parent: selling an asset at a capital gain or withdrawing an asset from a tax-sheltered account a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP). But gifting itself has no tax issues with adult children.

If a loan to your child was for investment or business purposes, forgiving it can have tax implications. This is in part because loan interest on funds borrowed to buy investments or fund a business is generally tax-deductible for the borrower.

As a result, forgiveness of such a loan may lead to a capital gain for the lender—if it’s forgiven during your life. If the loan is forgiven upon your death, there should generally be no tax implications.

If you loan money to a child to invest and the loan does not bear the Canada Revenue Agency prescribed rate of interest—currently 5%—the income may be attributed back to you and taxable to you. You can give an adult child money to invest and not be subject to attribution. But if you loan it and can call it back without charging the prescribed rate, the CRA will attribute interest, dividends, rental income and business income back to you. Capital gains, however, are taxable to the child.

Before you loan or gift money for a down payment…

When considering a gift or loan, you should first and foremost be sure that you are in a position to help your kids without risking your own financial security.

There may be family law, estate and tax implications to making a loan. Seek legal and tax advice from a qualified professional to protect yourself and your family.
