National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) Releases Video Addressing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Judiciary

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 21, 2019

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has released a video establishing the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in the judiciary.

The video features several judges and judicial officers from across the country discussing what diversity, equity and inclusion means to them and how professionals in the juvenile and family courts can better represent the children and families they serve.

The NCJFCJ hosted the first-of-its-kind convening of organizations representing judges and practitioners within the judiciary and legal profession at the first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Summit, supported by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and facilitated by The Raben Group, during the NCJFCJ Annual Conference this year.

The group collectively determined where the largest gaps and opportunities to diversify the profession are. Goals, tactics, action items and roles and responsibilities were discussed and determined.

In 2015, the NCJFCJ developed its diversity statement, which states the organization’s commitment to diversity in every aspect of its composition and in performing its mission. Diversity in the judiciary is vital to upholding public trust and confidence in the legal system. Diversity in this context refers to communities and individuals who are identified by race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, age, or disability status. To achieve its mission and promote diversity, the NCJFCJ asserts its commitment to diversity through the following principles:

    • NCJFCJ will recruit membership and leadership which reflects the diversity of the children and families we serve
    • NCJFCJ will provide educational and training programs, publications, and policy positions that are relevant and culturally-sensitive.
    • National policy and standards developed by NCJFCJ affecting courts will promote and encourage judges to be knowledgeable of diversity issues.
    • NCJFCJ will engage in recruitment practices and retention strategies to achieve a diverse staff.

“The inaugural DEI Summit was a unique opportunity for collaboration among leading organizations within our profession,” said Judge Hiram Puig-Lugo, NCJFCJ member and a leader of the inaugural DEI Summit. “We need to address the lack of diversity as a collective team and improve DEI across the board. Our group of national leaders will convene quarterly to ensure our plan is moving forward. It is exciting to see this momentum and we look forward to the hard work ahead.”

Participating organizations include: National Association of Women Judges, National American Indian Court Judges Association, Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, Hispanic National Bar Association, American Judges Association, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, National Bar Association, National Association for Court Management, American Bar Association, National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts, National Judicial College, National LGBT Bar Association, and National Center for State Courts and the Conference of Chief Justices.

Since 1937, the NCJFCJ has served as the leader in providing continuing education opportunities, research, technical assistance, and policy development in the field of juvenile and family law. The NCJFCJ is a nonprofit organization with nearly 2,000 members nationwide and internationally. The NCJFCJ’s mission is to provide judges, courts, and related agencies involved with juvenile, family, and domestic violence cases with the knowledge and skills to improve the lives of the families and children who seek justice.

Recently, the NCJFCJ was awarded the 2018 Readers’ Choice Best in Business Award for Most Diverse – Workforce Diversity by Northern Nevada Business View.

About the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ):
Founded in 1937, the Reno, Nev.-based National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, is the nation’s oldest judicial membership organization and focused on improving the effectiveness of our nation’s juvenile and family courts. A leader in continuing education opportunities, research, and policy development in the field of juvenile and family justice, the 2,000-member organization is unique in providing practice-based resources to jurisdictions and communities nationwide.

U.S. Polo Assn. Partners With Palm Beach County to Create a 30-Minute TV & Digital Show ‘Women in Polo: The Palm Beaches,’ as Part of Its New Women’s Initiative ‘Inspiring Others’

In Honor of Women’s Equality Day On Aug. 26, This Program Highlights Six Women Polo Players From All Backgrounds Who Have Impacted and Advanced The Sport of Polo

USPA Global Licensing Inc. (USPAGL), the official licensing arm and broadcaster of the United States Polo Association (USPA), is proud to partner with the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council (TDC) in sponsoring the new television and digital show “Women in Polo: The Palm Beaches,” a 30-minute in-depth look at the inspirational and fearless female polo players of yesterday, today and tomorrow. The show’s release is in conjunction with USPAGL’s Women’s Initiative, “Inspiring Others,” a year-long campaign celebrating female polo players and supporting women’s training programs, charities, tournaments, lifestyles and fashion. The launch is also uniquely timed with Women’s Equality Day, celebrated on Aug. 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which granted all women the right to vote.

“With U.S. Polo Assn. being the official brand of the United States Polo Association, it was important for us to recognize these amazing women and share their inspirational stories both on and off the polo field,” commented J. Michael Prince, President & CEO of USPAGL. “We are proud to partner for the second time with Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council and Ko-Mar Productions on our Women’s Initiative, and believe that ’Women In Polo: The Palm Beaches’ encourages more women and young girls to take an interest in the sport, lifestyle, philanthropic and fashion opportunities that polo offers.”

“Women In Polo: The Palm Beaches” will reach over 100 million households across a national audience and debut Labor Day weekend on the TVG Network, which focuses on equestrian sports. In addition to the national broadcast, the show will air on ThePalmBeaches.tv and be available in Palm Beach County hotels and resorts, as well as on content provider Roku. USPAGL will feature the show in many of the 1,100 U.S. Polo Assn. retail stores that span 166 countries, as well as on multiple digital platforms including the company’s website at www.uspoloassnglobal.com, IGTV and YouTube, impacting millions of consumers and sports fans globally.

Glenn Jergensen, the Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council commented, “U.S. Polo Assn. and the sport of polo are essential in making Palm Beach County, specifically the Village of Wellington, the ‘Equestrian Capital of the world.’ The Tourist Development Council is proud to highlight these extraordinary female athletes and share their stories on The Palm Beaches TV.

“Women in Polo: The Palm Beaches” profiles six inspiring women who are changing the face of the sport, beginning with the late, great Sunny Hale, a polo pioneer and the first woman to win the U.S. Open Polo Championship. Viewers will meet Dawn Jones, a polo patron and advocate for female players (and wife of Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones), as well as Pamela Flanagan, a young, polo-playing lawyer who rescues horses and transforms them into polo ponies. The show also takes an in-depth look at the exciting lives of two U.S. Polo Assn. Global Brand Ambassadors: Hope Arellano, a young polo phenom, and Ashley Busch, fashion designer, model and wife of NASCAR Superstar Kurt Busch. The show takes a detour outside Palm Beach County to meet Shariah Harris, a young woman from Philadelphia’s Work To Ride program, who is defying the odds by earning a full scholarship to play polo at Cornell University, and making history as the first African American woman to play in a high goal polo tournament.

“I want to thank U.S. Polo Assn. for creating the ‘Women in Polo’ project to help raise awareness about women in the sport of polo, its history, those who currently play the sport, and its potential to grow in the future,” said Dawn Jones. “I was honored to offer my perspective as an active female polo player, highly interested in seeing women’s polo become more efficiently and professionally organized for the next generation.”

“I am very honored to be one of the featured women in this show,” said Shariah Harris. “My introduction to the sport of polo and my journey, through the Work to Ride program, has been very unique. However, I feel that the best journeys are sometimes the ones that are a bit unconventional. And hopefully, my story and the stories of the other amazing women featured on this show can inspire other women to pick up the sport, no matter their backgrounds.”

  • Boston’s 2nd Fierce Urgency of Now Festival Celebrates Young Professionals of Color in a Big Way

Boston’s 2nd Fierce Urgency of Now Festival Celebrates Young Professionals of Color in a Big Way

    [ad_1]

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in his “I Have a Dream” speech of the “tranquilizing drug of gradualism”. He implored Americans to uphold responsibilities to democracy, and to progress with a spirit of the “fierce urgency of now”. City Awake (a program by the Boston Chamber of Commerce) is commencing the 2nd annual Fierce Urgency of Now Festival on Sept. 4-8 with 40 events in the City of Boston to highlight the opportunities and challenges of young persons of color – and to spark equitable action from business, civic, and government leaders.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 26, 2019

City Awake is calling on the city of Boston to wake up…and to wake up now.

In his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King addressed a crowd amassed along the National Mall to declare: “We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. There is no time […] to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.”

This Sept. 4-8, individuals and organizations from across greater Boston will gather together to remember, renew, and recommit to the mission that the time of fierce urgency is now. For five days, both learners and leaders will build connections and community during the aptly titled Fierce Urgency of Now (F.U.N.) Festival. The second-ever annual event is first of its kind in the nation – a festival meant to highlight the experiences of, challenges, and possibilities for young professionals of color in Boston.

The idea for F.U.N was born out of the results of the 2017 report City of Millennials, a collaboration between Boston Indicators, the Boston Foundation, and City Awake. Results from the report identified a divergent experience for millennials of color living and working in Greater Boston, and demonstrated a disproportionate amount of challenges in issues of affordability, overall economic security, and the continuous narrative of Boston as an unwelcoming city for young professionals of color.

“To address the reputation and realities of Boston as a city that is unwelcoming to people of color, we need to bring people across sectors, backgrounds, and perspectives together for meaningful dialogue that leads to change,” said Justin Kang, executive director of City Awake and vice president of Economic Growth for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce (GBCC). “Young professionals of color are critical to this work, and through FUN we are giving a platform to lead in creating a Boston where all can thrive.”

James E. Rooney, president & CEO of the GBCC, shares “For greater Boston to maintain and grow its economic standing, we must ensure that we are addressing the challenges holding us back as a city, particularly challenges that impact our ability to attract and retain a talented workforce. Our region’s population is younger and more diverse than at any time in our history, so it is imperative that we provide connecting opportunities and discuss issues that will make us a better, more welcoming, and more competitive city. FUN is a way to have those important conversations while also having a good time and building stronger connections between the business community and young people of color.”

“At John Hancock, we aim to build a healthier, more equitable Boston, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive work environment that welcomes diverse talent,” said Sofia Teixeira, head of U.S. Diversity & Inclusion at John Hancock. “We are proud to partner with the Chamber on its economic opportunity initiatives and this F.U.N. festival will enable important conversations and connections that can help drive important change to move our city forward.”

“Young people of color have a right to feel like they not only belong and are welcomed but that they are truly valued and supported where they live and work,” said Dani Monroe, Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer at Partners HealthCare. “As employers, we know how imperative it is that they have opportunities to build their professional skills and presence in the workplace but their ultimate success hinges on much more than we can accomplish within the walls of our organizations. It is vital that we work together as a community to build up this critical segment of Boston’s workforce and Fierce Urgency of Now does just that by providing spaces for people of color to have the opportunity to grow both professionally and socially, and build meaningful connections that will allow them to have a stronger presence in the workforce and in their own personal lives.”

Festival programs will be hosted across the city by various partner organizations. The festivities will kick off on Sept. 4 at the historic Fenway Park with “After 5 @ Fenway,” a pregame party followed by a Red Sox versus Minnesota Twins matchup. On Friday, Sept. 6, City Awake and P&G Gillette will partner to present the festival keynote event – a fireside chat with Tristan Walker, founder & CEO of Walker and Company Brands, a company that strives to make health and beauty simple for people of color. P&G acquired Walker and Company in 2018, and Walker continues to operate as CEO. In a discussion moderated by Boston Globe culture writer, Jenee Osterheldt, Walker will speak about his journey as a young black entrepreneur, the opportunities and challenges that can come from large corporations and startups joining forces, and running a business as a millennial father of two.

Other events include a professional development session hosted by the New England Aquarium and the Boston Public Health Commission focused on how climate change impacts communities of color; a panel discussion led by “Googlers of Color” at the Google office; an inclusive and nostalgic 90’s Night at the Boston Children’s Museum; a showcase for queer artists of color hosted by Citizen Schools; an Afrobeat fit session at Hibernian Hall; and the Bostown Music Festival hosted by Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen, to name just a few. A complete listing of events can be found attached and online.

The 2019 FUN event is made possible by Presenting Sponsors: Arnold Worldwide, John Hancock, Partners HealthCare and Contributing Sponsors: The Boston Red Sox, P&G Gillette, The Boston Foundation, TSNE Mission Works, and Tufts Health Plan.

Schwegman Named in Top 25 Firms for Minority Attorneys

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 17, 2019

Schwegman Lundberg & Woessner is pleased to have been recognized as being among the top 25 law firms within its size category in the U.S. for minority attorneys, as reported by Law360 on July 7, 2019.

“Both minority and gender diversity and inclusion are the focus of concerted efforts at Schwegman,” said Theresa Stadheim, Schwegman Principal and Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group member. “Schwegman has been very generous in providing support for diversity and inclusion events and has been visionary in its efforts, both nationally and locally, to get minorities and women interested in STEM careers at all levels.”

Steven Lundberg, Managing Principal, commented: “We have been very active in efforts for fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion. Diversity can be particularly challenging in our demographic, since our intellectual property boutique firm is focused toward patent prosecution and our clients are somewhat skewed toward electrical and software technologies. While we have gained from a more diverse demographic in our San Jose office, and via our satellite attorney program that allows attorneys to work remotely from their preferred geographic locations, we continue to place great emphasis on diversity and inclusion at all locations and levels of our firm.”

Suneel Arora, Schwegman Principal and Hiring Committee member, elaborated further: “Diversity is an ongoing effort that is discussed at every firm Board meeting and considered throughout our recruiting process, but I believe that it is our inclusive firm culture and excellent track record of retaining attorneys that will make our efforts successful and sustainable. I can personally attest to the opportunities for growth and success that are available to all and that are actively fostered at Schwegman. Moreover, our flat organization and the respect and autonomy accorded to all attorneys (and staff) makes it easier for minority attorneys to succeed.”

“At Schwegman, attorneys have the ability to choose which technologies and clients are the best fit for their skills and interests, which is paramount to success, satisfaction, and longevity in our profession,” added Andre Marais, Schwegman Board and Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group member. “We don’t try to micromanage to achieve over-granular diversity objectives. Instead, we try to focus on recruiting, mentoring, and promoting with a focus on supporting individual team members, which we view as our best path to success for our entire team.”

Further extensive information about ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts at Schwegman can be found here.

Jamie’s son, Damien, is non-verbal and on the severe side of the autism spectrum, while Pam’s daughter, Ava, is non-verbal with dyskinetic cerebral palsy and has high support needs. They each have additional children and try to find a good balance.

Since January, they’ve gained thousands of followers on Facebook, and hundreds of thousands of views on their videos as they work to spread disability awareness and inclusion.

“We started as a video blog to help bring humor and awareness to disability inclusion. When we started gaining traction, we realized that we could do so much more,” said co-founder, Jamie de Grasse. “Our nonprofit status is one of the most exciting things that’s happened for us in building this community of support.”

Special with a Side of Mom now uses inclusion events, social gatherings, website applications, and social media platforms to reach caregivers and parents. The nonprofit is also partnering with local organizations, employers, sports and recreational teams to provide inclusive systems to benefit all members of society. Jamie and Pam also host a support group for other parents in the SW Austin/Dripping Springs area called “Special with a Side of Coffee.”

The organization’s mission is to spread disability inclusion awareness in education, sports, community and the workplace to all members of society regardless of their abilities.

As a nonprofit organization under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3), donors can deduct contributions that they make to the organization. It also means that Special with a Side of Mom is qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers or gifts under Section 2055, 2106, or 2522.

Two Austin Moms Start Channel for Special Needs Parents to Spread Awareness and Humor

Special With a Side of Mom, a video blog dedicated to spreading awareness about children with severe disabilities like Autism and Cerebral Palsy, launches out of Austin, Texas.

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 23, 2019

Two Austin moms have started a video blog to spread awareness to the severe sides of autism and Cerebral Palsy. Their goal is to bring humor to moms of disabled children, connect other special need parents while spreading awareness.

They launched on Jan. 16 and already have 1,300 followers on Facebook and 1,000 on Instagram in five weeks with over 70,000 video views.

“We found ourselves in a unique position to start spreading more awareness,” says co-founder, Jamie de Grasse. “We wanted to create a community where moms can come together, get their questions answered, and share all of the stories, both good and bad, of raising a special needs child. Often times people are too quiet about their experiences, and it can leave parents of special needs kids feeling alone and isolated.”

The moms are best friends and neighbors and two of their kids are severely disabled and in the same classroom. Jamie’s child, Damien, is six and severely autistic. Pam Shipley, co-founder, has a seven-year-old named Ava with Cerebral Palsy. Both children are completely non-verbal and in the same class at school. They decided they wanted to do more and to give back. There was such a need in the community for moms to share and connect. They started a coffee group and quickly thought it would be great to video some of their stories.

New Children’s Book That Celebrates Diversity in Architecture Launches on Kickstarter

    [ad_1]

African-American women make up only 444 out of 113,554 architects in the US. One children’s book sets out to change that.

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 29, 2018

Norman’s Architecture Adventure, a children’s book that celebrates diversity in the architecture field, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

“Norman’s Architecture Adventure” is about a young African-American boy who wants to be an architect like his mom. She is his inspiration and best friend but he gets restless one day when she is busy working and he wants to explore. His curiosity gets the better of him as he sets out on his own into the unknown, meets new friends, and learns that having an imagination is the greatest adventure anyone can have.

This book was inspired by my friend who is one of the youngest female African-American architects in the United States. The story subtly challenges gender and racial roles while celebrating a child’s innocence and imagination. I hope it can be part of a larger movement to encourage greater diversity in the profession I love.

    Joshua Sanabria, Author & Illustrator

“This book was inspired by my friend who is one of the youngest female African-American architects in the United States,” said Josh Sanabria, author and illustrator of Norman’s Architecture Adventure. “The story subtly challenges gender and racial roles while celebrating a child’s innocence and imagination. I hope it can be part of a larger movement to encourage greater diversity in the profession I love.”

Efforts to encourage more African-American women to pursue a career in architecture could not be more timely. Recent statistics convey a profession that is drastically behind the curve. The University of Cincinnati’s Database of African-American architects reports that out of 113,554 architects in the United States only 444 are African-American women.

This incredibly small 0.39 percent represents an opportunity for positive disruption from the top of the profession down to how children are inspired to pursue a life in architecture from an early age.

“Norman’s Architecture Adventure” is being published by GoArchitect, an indie publishing company on a mission to foster curious and creative confidence in order to unlock generations of innovators, leaders, and positive thinkers.

To learn more and support this mission-driven campaign, Norman’s Architecture Adventure is available on Kickstarter until November 23rd.

  • More Than One-Third of LGBTQ Adults Identify as Having a Disability

More Than One-Third of LGBTQ Adults Identify as Having a Disability

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 29, 2018

LGBTQ Pride Month (June), the LGBTQ community has been reflecting on the past and looking forward to the future. Among lesbian, gay and bisexual adults, 30 percent of men and 36 percent of women also identify as having a disability. RespectAbility, a national nonprofit working to fight stigmas and advance opportunities for people with disabilities, has been celebrating Pride Month by highlighting the intersection of disability and LGBTQ. The disability community intersects with every other minority group, and the LGBTQ community is no exception. The LGBTQ rights movement has made tremendous progress over the past five years, but there is a lot of work left to be done to ensure that LGBTQ people are truly equal.

Both people who identify as LGBTQ and people who have invisible disabilities such as learning disabilities like dyslexia, mental health or ADHD have to decide whether or not to “come out of the closet.” This is not an easy decision for most people because of the uncertainty of whether or not acceptance will follow. LGBTQ youth who come out sometimes are rejected by their families and friends. Some are even kicked out of their homes and forced to live on the streets. According to a University of Chicago report, LGBTQ young adults had a 120 percent higher risk of reporting homelessness compared to youth who identified as heterosexual and cisgender.

It is vital to fight stigmas and advance opportunities so all people who have faced prejudice can achieve a better future.

    Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, President, RespectAbility

Some celebrities and business leaders are using their voice to share their stories, educating people about both visible and invisible disabilities. They are defying the statistics and have remained highly successful with their disabilities. Notable examples include political activist Justin Chappell who is a wheelchair user, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper who is dyslexic, actor Josh Feldman who is deaf, comedian Stephen Fry who has bipolar disorder, artist Frida Kahlo who had polio and spinal and pelvis damage, Eddie Ndopu who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, YouTuber Tyler Oakley who has depression, model Aaron Philip who is a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy, writer Leah Piepzna-Samarasinha who is chronically ill and journalist Melissa Yingst who is deaf.

Our nation’s economy is strongest when it is inclusive of the value that diverse talent brings to the workplace. These celebrities are making a difference in how audiences, both LGBTQ and straight, perceive disability and in setting high expectations for youth with disabilities. People with disabilities of all backgrounds can be amongst the highest achievers on earth. Having LGBTQ people with disabilities as positive role models for success is important for children and young adults who identify as members of both of these communities.

RespectAbility is proud to have employees who identify as a member of both the disability and LGBTQ communities. Read about their experiences: www.respectability.org/tag/lgbtq-pride-month.

Others like television pioneer Jonathan Murray and philanthropist Darren Walker who do not have a disability themselves but know what it is like to be stigmatized as people who are openly gay have used their influence to ensure more inclusion of people with disabilities as well. Their work has enabled many more people who identify as both LGBTQ and having a disability to succeed.

“It is vital to fight stigmas and advance opportunities so all people who have faced prejudice can achieve a better future,” said RespectAbility’s President Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi.

The role models mentioned above are especially important to acknowledge during LGBTQ Pride Month. However, their work should be valued and appreciated year-round. RespectAbility will continue to recognize their important contributions on a regular basis.

Comparably.com Ranks Periscope Data Among Best Companies for Professional Development, Leadership Team, Diversity and Women

Periscope Data, the world’s first software platform built to address the complete analytics lifecycle, has been recognized by Comparably.com as one of the top companies in the U.S. in several categories in its latest rankings. As a reflection of its dedication to building a collaborative, dynamic and inclusive culture, Periscope Data was recognized as one of the top companies for professional development and its leadership team, while CEO Harry Glaser was voted one of the Best CEOs for female employees and for diversity.

Comparably’s ratings reflect employee perspectives on the CEO’s leadership style and effectiveness across several categories. Periscope Data was one of only four small-to-mid-sized companies to appear on all four of these lists.

These rankings are an excellent reflection of the priorities we’ve set when building a positive culture at Periscope Data. Developing a business of people who are kind, positive, inclusive, helpful and transparent doesn’t just impact our day-to-day work environment, it absolutely makes an impact in improving our business and building a better product for our clients. I’m very excited about the path ahead for Periscope Data and proud of the team we’ve built.

Harry Glaser, Co-Founder and CEO of Periscope Data

“2018 is the year in which women across the country stood up and spoke out against gender discrimination, pay inequality and harassment in the workplace,” said Jason Nazar, Comparably CEO. “Comparably’s Best CEOs for Women awards recognizes the leaders that female employees ranked as the best of the best. These CEOs create cultures that support and encourage women, and we hope it will motivate other leaders to do the same.”

“These rankings are an excellent reflection of the priorities we’ve set when building a positive culture at Periscope Data,” said Harry Glaser, CEO and co-founder of Periscope Data. “Developing a business of people who are kind, positive, inclusive, helpful and transparent doesn’t just impact our day-to-day work environment, it absolutely makes an impact in improving our business and building a better product for our clients. I’m very excited about the path ahead for Periscope Data and proud of the team we’ve built.”

Today’s recognition is only the latest in a string of recognitions for Periscope Data: the company was recently named among the 2018 Best Places to Work by the San Francisco Business Times and its customer solutions team was recognized by the Stevie Awards as one of the top support teams in the country. In 2017, Periscope Data ranked in Comparably’s top five percent of companies for employee happiness, leadership, retention, executive team, women, compensation, work culture and diversity.

Periscope Data has seen dramatic growth in the first few months of 2018 – its Unified Data Platform handles more than 20 million queries per day, by data teams at more than 1,000 companies, with more customers joining every day. Periscope Data introduced two major enhancements to its platform in the past several months – data discovery for business, its new way for business users to discover insights faster without the need for proprietary data modeling languages, and integration with Python and R directly within Periscope Data’s platform to enable more powerful data analysis.

    About Periscope Data

Periscope Data builds software that turns data teams into superheroes. The Church of Scientology Celebrates With the Latino Community

    [ad_1]

With a community as diverse as Los Angeles, there is always something to celebrate at the Church of Scientology.

    Press Release

    updated: May 11, 2018

People from more than 140 countries, speaking 224 different identified languages, currently call Los Angeles home. And as the Church of Scientology makes its facilities available to nonprofits for their events, there is a wide variety of celebrations hosted there throughout the year.

Just one example was the festival held in the chapel May 5 for Mexican and other Latin American communities. More than 30 guests gathered at the church to dance, sing and celebrate in a joyous Cinco de Mayo celebration — a tradition in California’s huge Latin community.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 in the Franco-Mexican War. For Mexicans-Americans, the holiday represents Mexican culture and pride.

Two guests performing karaoke inspired the crowd to take part in the singing, with an energy typical of the spirit the Mexican community brings to the city of Los Angeles.

Those attending were delighted with the surprise performance of an Ecuadoran singer who shared his passion and talent for Mexican music, entertaining everyone present. The singer spoke of his pleasure in supporting Cinco de Mayo as a symbol of the freedom-loving Mexican community.

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles is proud to host these celebrations and support the cultural traditions of the city’s many vibrant communities.

Those attending were warmly invited to return Saturday, May 12, for the celebration of the anniversary of the publication of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Healththe most widely read and influential book ever written about the mind.

SalesOps Central is taking steps to tackle the gender equality issues in tech by providing free sales management training and peer support for female leaders in venture-backed SaaS firms.

Sales Ops Central has announced the availability of free SaaS sales management training for emerging female sales leaders. Women accepted into the scholarship program are invited to attend a 2-day bootcamp covering the foundations of sales leadership, followed by participation in an alumni network with hundreds of peers.

2017 was a watershed year for bringing awareness of systemic issues in diversity & inclusion within the tech industry and we decided to do what we can to turn this situation around. We feel we can have impact by supporting women with greater access to peer networks and to accelerate promotions through education.

    Matt Cameron, Managing Partner

“2017 was a watershed year for bringing awareness of systemic issues in diversity & inclusion within the tech industry and we decided to do what we can to turn this situation around. We feel we can have impact by supporting women with greater access to peer networks and to accelerate promotions through education,” stated Matt Cameron, Managing Partner, SalesOps Central.

Cameron is one of the Salesforce.com diaspora, an organization where he was inspired by the power of community and inclusion. In 2017 he decided to reserve 10% of all seats in the SaaSy Sales Management ‘Frontline’ training for emerging female leaders as scholarship places. Women are nominated by former program participants and the venture community alike.

“I have enjoyed the good fortune of a broad global network via my time working at Salesforce and Yammer, which is something that I want to provide for emerging female leaders through our SaaSy Sales Management network,” commented Cameron. Operating internationally, the program is coming to Los Angeles for the first time in March, which adds to peer networks in San Francisco, New York, London and Chicago.

Women working in venture-backed SaaS startups who wish to be considered for the scholarship should touch base here. Criteria for selection is working for a firm with fewer than 100 employees and be leading a team of salespeople in a SaaS business.

Bay Area-Based International Education Leaders Partner to Serve Diverse Youth at Home and Overseas

    [ad_1]

Two leading Bay Area nonprofit organizations have launched a partnership to strengthen each of their work. Pairing the expertise of Global Glimpse in education for diverse high school-aged students with CFHI’s expertise in ethical global health programs, their first joint project invites CFHI alumni to accompany Global Glimpse students as Medical Fellows to three Latin American countries.

Global Glimpse was born out of a need for high-quality global education in the United States. The organization operates on the belief that exposure to different countries, cultures and people provides important perspective and drives young people to take action to better their world together. GG delivers leadership and global education for high-school-aged students through after-school workshops that culminate in a leadership and service learning trip to Nicaragua, Dominican Republic or Ecuador.

I’m thrilled to join forces with an organization that we have admired for so many years, in particular, their commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration among diverse students.

Robin Young, Director of Programs & Operations

Child Family Health International is a nonprofit NGO in consultation with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, facilitating rich experiences for students from the U.S. to learn what health systems abroad are doing to provide basic health services and support difficult-to-reach patients. Through ethical, fair-trade partnerships in 10 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia, CFHI helps interdisciplinary health students at all levels to develop professionally and engage thoughtfully with communities in the Global South through global health education. CFHI alumni develop unique skills during their programs including an understanding of the social determinants of health and barriers to health access in resource-limited settings; an understanding of the cultural and ethical issues of working and learning within under-served populations; an understanding and commitment to professional behavior while working collaboratively across cultures, and much more.

As such, CFHI alumni are perfectly positioned to accompany Global Glimpse programs and help coordinate student wellness during these trips as Medical Fellows, an undertaking that represents the first joint project between the two organizations.

“I’m thrilled to join forces with an organization that we have admired for so many years, in particular, their commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration among diverse students,” says Robin Young, director of programs and operations for CFHI. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our alumni that I know will enrich their personal and professional lives.”

The Medical Fellowships offer attractive benefits including a stipend, room and board, Wilderness Training Certification and more. Beyond a job, this is an opportunity to change the lives of diverse young people from the U.S. by supporting the healthy and safe execution of programs that inspire students to become responsible global citizens who take action to better their world. This is an opportunity for individuals with a passion for global education and international exchange.

CFHI alumni who are interested in applying should do so before the Feb. 19 deadline. Positions are competitive: read the full description and instructions to apply here: http://globalglimpse.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Global-Glimpse-Medical-Fellow-Job-Description.pdf.

She Geeks Out Launches New Corporate Program on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

    [ad_1]

She Geeks Out (“SGO”) announced that applications are open for their new corporate program, The Vault. In this unique program designed specifically for executives, senior leaders, startup founders, venture capitalists and managers, attendees will learn about the historical context of oppression including racism and sexism, current terminology and thinking, and how to apply this knowledge to real-world workplace scenarios. In what is arguably a particularly challenging time for corporate leaders grappling with a heightened awareness of the importance of creating an inclusive and welcoming work environment, this program will provide a confidential space to discuss difficult issues with their peers and be facilitated by experts in workplace diversity and inclusion. The overarching goal is to translate this learning into action by helping attendees move the needle forward toward equity for all within their organization. Upon completion, participants will be more informed, be able to make a strong business case for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and have a better understanding of their own identities and their impact on the workplace.

The Vault will take place over six mornings beginning early Spring 2018. The public Spring program is open to individuals from various organizations; the program is also available to companies’ internal teams upon request. Each of the six sessions will focus on a different topic: Identity, Terminology, Power and Privilege, Skill Building, Multicultural Organizational Development, and Action Planning. SGO requests that interested parties apply on the SGO website as soon as possible to ensure availability.

I found The Vault excellent for gaining comfort in the language of diversity, equity, and inclusion. I was able to work with the facilitators and the rest of our group to assess current challenges, create an action plan and immediately begin working toward a more inclusive work environment. I highly recommend this training to anyone passionate about creating healthy, diverse, and inclusive teams.

    Jaclyn Jussif, Recruiting Manager, EdX

    [ad_1]

More than 600 Muslim and Jewish women gathered to learn from the nation’s leading scholars and activists on ways to combat bigotry and hate

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 10, 2017

The Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom held its 4th Annual Conference this past weekend at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. The theme of this conference was “Rising up Against Hate.” More than 600 Muslim and Jewish women gathered to learn from the nation’s leading scholars and activists on ways to combat bigotry and hate.

Notable religious scholars like former president of the Islamic Society of North America Dr. Ingrid Matson was one of four keynotes for the event. Matson spoke about her heroes Hajar and Saffiyah and said: “Love doesn’t mean the absence of conflict, it means that despite that conflict, we will work together.” Author of the New York Times best-selling novel The Red Tent and Jewish Keynote Anita Diamant said: “Friendship is as essential as bread and as crucial as chocolate.”

We have over a thousand women still on a waiting list and are expanding by the minute. We are not just a group anymore, we are a movement!

    Sheryl Olitzky, Executive Director

A surprise appearance by Senator Corey Booker had the audience up on their feet, empowered by the courage to wage peace.

“America is not a nation of tolerance but a nation of love,” said Booker.

With several dozen breakout sessions, there was something for everyone. Workshop themes ranged from the action-packed self-defense moves by founding President of the Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) Rana Abdelhamid to the introspective text studies of Director of Multifaith Studies and Initiatives Rabbi Nancy Fuchs Kreimer and Scholar of Islamic Studies Homayra Ziad of the Institute of Islamic, Christian and Jewish studies.

Facilitator Sarah Aptilon of Kansas City conducted a workshop titled “Encountering ‘Us vs. Them’: How to Talk to a Bigot” on how to address those within or outside of our own communities whom we consider to be closed-minded in some way — the server who makes an offhand racist joke, the argumentative friend, the stranger whose comments you overhear at the gym, the relative who makes offensive remarks at the holidays.

Aptilon says, “I was inspired by the experiences that participants shared. They described what had and hadn’t worked for them. Our discussion confirmed that arguing and presenting facts isn’t usually effective, while listening deeply, asking questions and sharing personal stories can work in subtle but powerful ways.”

Professor and co-founder of the Sisterhood Atiya Aftab, Esq., conducted a workshop on “What You Wanted to Know About Judaism and Islam and Were Afraid to Ask” with Rabbi Shira Stern.

Women from over 26 different states and the District of Columbia attended this year’s event with many of them taking to social media to memorialize the event with photos and videos. Manika Patel of Austin, Texas, wrote, “What an amazing weekend I had at the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom 4th annual conference in Morristown, NJ this weekend. Making new lifelong friends from all across the US, listening to some amazing and inspiring speakers, I can’t wait to see what wonderful things you ladies are going to do in the Sisterhood for 2018.”

Board President Donna Cephas spoke about the power of each of our Sisters to reach many others, to create deep interfaith relationships and to initiate change through waging peace. “Our movement now includes young women leading their own Teenage Chapters.”

The day-long event culminated in a panel discussion moderated by American comedian and host of SiriusXM Progress The Dean Obeidallah Show, the only daily national radio show hosted by a Muslim American. Panelists included author of the recently released Adnan’s Story Rabia Chaudry, founder of Ms. magazine Letty Cottin Pograbin, founding President of the Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) Rana Abdelhamid and the Executive Director of the Sisterhood Sheryl Olitzky.

When asked what was her hope for the future of the organization, Olitzky said: “when we are no longer needed.”

If membership growth is any indication, they are a long way from reaching that goal. The tripling of Sisterhood Chapters and their online communities reflect a burning need to continue this work.

“We have over a thousand women still on a waiting list and are expanding by the minute. We are not just a group anymore, we are a movement!” says Olitzky.

Religious Diversity and Inclusion Come to Life in Jenkintown Community

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 23, 2017

“We had nearly 100 people at our Seder meal this year,” says Irv Leventhal, a resident at Rydal Park in Jenkintown, “and you can bet that many of them weren’t Jewish.”

Irv is proud of his Jewish faith, and he chose to live at Rydal Park because of how inclusive and diverse the campus is. “Our neighbors come from all faith traditions. While the outside world argues over whose religion is right, here at Rydal Park, we take the time to learn about each other’s beliefs.” For this reason, the Rydal Park community is among the most inclusive and diverse places for people 62 and better in the Philadelphia region.

Our neighbors come from all faith traditions. While the outside world argues over whose religion is right, here at Rydal Park, we take the time to learn about each other’s beliefs.

    Irv Leventhal, Rydal Park resident

Rydal Park is part of Presby’s Inspired Life. With a name like that, many assume that the campus appeals only to members of the Presbyterian denomination. However, once you step through the doors, you soon learn that a large number of Rydal Park’s residents are of varied faiths, including many who are Jewish. At the community, embracing diversity really starts at the grassroots. Recently, residents and team members formed a “Diversity Council” of individuals who are committed to building a community where each other’s cultures are respected and revered.

“One of the real strengths of the Rydal Park community is our great diversity of faith traditions,” says Tom Summers, chaplain. Tom embraces the diversity of Rydal Park, holding weekly interfaith scripture studies that utilize different texts, sponsoring an ongoing comparative religion class and providing regular worship services for residents of all faiths.

Observing holidays is also important for Tom and the residents. For instance, during the month of September, the campus will host events celebrating Rosh Hashanah and honoring Yom Kippur and come October the annual sukkah building will mark the festive holiday of Sukkot. These occasions not only offer a time for Jewish residents to worship, but also to educate and share.

Rabbi Howard Bogot, another Rydal Park resident, is a proponent of such education. By day, he instructs students at Penn State Abington on Jewish studies. In the evenings, he shares his talent for teaching with other residents, presenting on a wide range of topics related to Judaism. At one of his latest classes, he had close to 70 attendees, many of which hailed from diverse faith traditions. “I don’t teach people how to be Jewish; rather, I discuss life experiences from a Jewish perspective. Sharing our different views helps to build community and create understanding. It’s something I wish the world at large would practice a bit more of.”
