  • The YouTube TV Disney blackout continues: How to watch NCAA football this weekend

We’re about to enter our third week of what feels like a never-ending contract dispute between Disney and YouTube TV that has left YouTube TV customers without access to over 20 Disney-owned channels. Reports estimate that Disney is losing $4.3 million per day during the blackout, you you would think they’d like to resolve the situation quickly, but Disney CFO Hugh Johnston stated ominously earlier this week, “We’re ready to go as long as they want to.” On the up side, YouTube TV has finally started issuing $20 credits to customers as consolation for their troubles, but will that be enough to keep their base from jumping ship and finding a new streaming service? As a reminder of how we got here, the Walt Disney Co. pulled its channels from YouTube TV on Oct. 30 after the two companies failed to reach new terms on their latest carriage agreement, and YouTube TV subscribers have gone without NFL, NBA and NCAA games on ABC and ESPN’s suite of channels for two full weeks. With no agreement in sight, YouTube TV subscribers will be left in the dark for this weekend’s NCAA football games, and possibly Monday Night Football, too.

With huge conference matchups like Texas vs. Georgia and Oklahoma vs. Alabama on ABC and Florida vs. Ole Miss on ESPN this Saturday,, you’ll need to seek out alternative viewing methods if you rely on YouTube TV for those channels. And unfortunately for YouTube TV’s negotiating position, there are plenty of options.

One of the cheapest ways to watch ESPN is with a Sling Day Pass — for just $5/day, you can tune into any and all ESPN programming with no other commitments. If you want a full switch from YouTube TV, there’s Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV, or Fubo, where you can watch all the Disney-owned channels. (Remember, unlike a lot of cable plans, you can easily pause or cancel YouTube TV or any of these alternatives, so long as you have month-to-month subscriptions.) Below, we’ve outlined some of your best options to watch ESPN, the Disney Channel, ABC and more, all pulled from our list of best live TV streaming services to cut cable, as well as a comprehensive list of which channels have been affected, and the biggest sporting events of the week that won’t be available to YouTube TV subscribers.

What games are on ESPN/ABC this week?

Grab an ESPN bundle so you won’t miss the NFL, NBA or any other games

For $29.99, the ESPN unlimited package includes access to all of ESPN’s linear networks: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNews and ESPN Deportes, plus access to programming on ABC, ESPN+ content, ESPN3, SECN+ and ACCNX. That means fans will get coverage of more than 47,000 live events each year, on-demand replays, original programming and more so you won’t miss a single Monday Night Football game or any weekend college football game on ABC or ESPN’s suite of channels. Plus, you can watch your favorite ABC shows the day after they air.

Right now, for a limited time, you can bundle ESPN unlimited with Disney+ and Hulu and pay $29.99/month for 12 months — that’s like getting those other services free for a year. Even if you’re a current subscriber to Disney+, Hulu or even the bundle, you can still upgrade to this great deal.

    $29.99/month at ESPN

Get Hulu + Live TV at a great price

Image for the small product module

Hulu’s live TV tier includes access to live TV channels like ESPN, ABC, NBC, Fox, and access to Disney+ and ESPN select. For a limited time, you can get a hefty discount on the service for 3 months. New and eligible returning subscribers (those who have not been Hulu subscribers in the past month) can sign up for Hulu + Live TV (with ads) for $64.99/month for their first three months. This is an especially great value considering that Hulu and Disney+ increased their prices on Oct. 21.

You’ll also enjoy access to unlimited DVR storage, the ability to stream on multiple devices and more. This special rate ends at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on Nov. 18.

After the three-month trial period, your subscription will continue at the regular market rate of $89.99, but if you’re looking for an alternative to YouTube TV, now’s the perfect time to take advantage of this deal. (If the YouTube situation is resolved before the weekend is up, you can also just sign up for a 3-day trial of Hulu + Live TV).

    $64.99/month at Hulu

Try Fubo free for a week and get $30 your first month

Image for the small product module

If you’re looking for a stopgap so you won’t miss any major games or shows this weekend, Fubo is offering a free 7-day trial so you can check out everything the platform has to offer, risk-free, and on top of that, you can get $30 off your first month.

Fubo TV gives you access to ESPN, Fox, ABC, CBS, NFL Network, and 100+ more live channels. At $80/month, the live TV streaming service is definitely a big investment but it’s one of the most comprehensive ways to watch live TV including the new NCAA season, the NFL, MLB and more, and still leaves you with major savings compared to a traditional cable package. Fubo subscribers also get 1,000 hours of cloud DVR storage.

Try it free, then get $30 off at Fubo

Try DirecTV free for 5 days, and get $30 off your first month

Image for the small product module

DirecTV offers loads of great live channels, which means you can watch thousands of live sporting events, live TV and more with a regular subscription. And right now, for a limited time, you can get a $20 bill credit off your first month when you sign up, plus at least $10 more off per month for your first 24 months with a DirecTV Choice, Ultimate or Premier package — that’s over $250 in savings. You can find information on every package here

Right now you can also get a free 5-day trial to test out the platform.

$30 off your first month at DirecTV

    What about Sling “day passes”?

You may have heard that Sling offers day, weekend and week passes to its streaming programming for as little as $5 per day. That is an option if you’re looking for just some of the ESPN channels (the Sling Orange tier), but ABC isn’t included. (If you’re just looking to catch one of this week’s big games, like Monday Night Football on ESPN, it’s a great short-term solution.) If you want a longer-term solution, you can get both ESPN and ABC with Sling’s Orange and Blue package ($30 a month to start, $61 thereafter), but you’ll need to add on the Sports Extra package for ESPNU, which requires an additional charge.

Get your local Disney/ABC programming for free

Need your local ABC programming? Your station may have its own free local streaming news channel (many do), you can see if The Roku Channel carries your local station’s news, or download your local news station app if it’s a Nexstar channel.

The other alternative — if you’re within the broadcast radius of a local ABC affiliate — is to get an over-the-air antenna. You can plug in your ZIP code at antennaweb.org to see what channels are in your area. This off-brand unit has worked very well in our initial testing — it’s under $30, and the channels are truly free.

Which channels are no longer available on YouTube TV?

Every channel that’s owned by The Walt Disney Company is currently blacked out on YouTube TV. Those channels are:

  • The YouTube TV Disney blackout continues: How to watch college football on ESPN, ABC and more

It doesn’t look like Disney-owned channels including ABC and ESPN will be returning to YouTube TV anytime soon. The Walt Disney Co. pulled its channels from YouTube TV as of midnight on Oct. 30 after the two companies failed to reach new terms on their latest carriage agreement and the spat is showing no signs of a resolution yet. While big sporting events are often where the rubber meets the road on these channel blackouts, YouTube TV subscribers were unable to see any college football games on ABC or ESPN all weekend, and it’s looking like this weekend will be just as frustrating for sports fans.

YouTube TV had previously stated that if Disney’s channels remain off the platform for an extended period, customers will receive a $20 monthly credit. YouTube has confirmed this credit hasn’t been activated yet for customers, but if and when it is, the discount provides little consolation if you want to watch this weekend’s college games or your favorite shows like Abbott Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy and Dancing with the Stars the night they air. If you do want to watch any live shows or sports this week, you’ll need to seek out alternative viewing methods. And unfortunately for YouTube TV’s negotiating position, there are plenty of options.

  • YouTube TV loses ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels

Disney’s channels have gone dark on YouTube TV after the companies failed to reach an agreement by their October 30 deadline. The affected channels include ESPN, local ABC stations, ABC News, FX, NatGeo, Disney Channel and Freeform. “Last week Disney used the threat of a blackout on YouTube TV as a negotiating tactic to force deal terms that would raise prices on our customers,” YouTube said in an announcement on its blog. “They’re now following through on that threat, suspending their content on YouTube TV.” YouTube added that Disney’s decision harms its subscribers while benefiting its own live TV products, such as Hulu+Live TV and Fubo.

In a statement sent to the Los Angeles Times, however, Disney accused Google’s YouTube TV of choosing to deny “subscribers the content they value most by refusing to pay fair rates for [its] channels, including ESPN and ABC.” Disney also accused Google of using its market dominance to “eliminate competition and undercut the industry-standard terms” that other pay-TV distributors have agreed to pay for its content. YouTube TV lost access to Disney channels back in 2021, but they were immediately able to strike a deal that restored the channels the very next day. The companies are most likely still trying to negotiate at the moment, but Google says it will offer subscribers a $20 credit if Disney channels remain offline for an extended period of time.

Google has had to make several similar announcements over the past year. In February, YouTube TV almost lost Paramount content, including CBS, CBS Sports and Nickelodeon, before reaching a last-minute deal. The same thing happened in August with Fox. More recently, Google and NBCUniversal also came to an agreement at the eleventh hour, though YouTube TV lost access to Univision, the largest Spanish-language broadcaster in the US.

  • Disney warns that YouTube TV could lose its channels amid fee negotations

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: YouTube TV may lose a provider’s content because a deadline is approaching without a deal in place. This time, the media company is Disney. It’s warning (via Variety) that its networks could soon go dark on Google’s streaming service.

The two sides are negotiating ahead of an October 30 midnight ET deadline. If they can’t agree by then, all Disney content will disappear from YouTube TV. That includes (among others) all ESPN channels, local ABC stations, ABC News, FX, NatGeo, Disney Channel and Freeform. A YouTube spokesperson told Variety that if that should happen for “an extended period of time,” subscribers will receive a $20 credit.

One aspect of these battles is finger-pointing as each side tries to leverage public perception. Disney says YouTube is trying to muscle the mouse into paying below market value. Meanwhile, YouTube claims Disney is “proposing costly economic terms” that could lead to even higher subscription fees. YouTube TV launched at $35 per month in 2017 and now costs a whopping $83 monthly.

If recent history is any indication, you can expect the dire warnings of content removal to continue until they strike a deal at the last second. That already happened several times this year.

In February, YouTube TV and Paramount had that dance. Google’s streaming network and Fox came to a renewal deal in August after repeated content-removal warnings. YouTube TV and NBCUniversal did the thing earlier this month. However, in that case, the streaming service dropped Univision and other TelevisaUnivision networks, so tidy deals aren’t inevitable. Time will tell how this one plays out, but it’s hard to imagine either side here wanting to play chicken past the October 30 deadline.

  • Is Alex dead on Wizards of Waverly Place?! | The Mary Sue

Wizards of Waverly Place fans are in shambles after the latest episode of the sequel series. We’re on the ground in New York this week, and the entire place is buzzing because Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo actually died in the Season 2 finale of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place! Just when you thought one week couldn’t deliver more emotional gut punches. (Step aside Peacemaker, it’s time for Disney Channel fans to grapple with a shocking ending of their own.) It’s a wild chain of events, and we’re here to walk you through it.

So, the central mystery of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place has been who Billie’s (Janice LeAnn Brown) real parents are? I mean, early in the show Alex just drops her off at Justin’s (a returning David Henrie) house. It’s a weird little note that is dangled above the audience’s head throughout these two seasons. We get some fun flashbacks where there’s clearly a secret life that we didn’t get to see Gomez’s character live in the years since Wizards of Waverly Place went off the air.

In the finale of this season, we learn that Billie is actually Alex’s daughter! I know, what a wild reveal, but there were signs. Flashbacks indicate that Alex was actually married. (To an evil force that agreed to wipe their memories so that Billie wouldn’t fall into the hands of Lord Morsus, our big bad!) It’s a lot to unpack, and there’s even a tearful goodbye between Billie and her newfound mother before Alex sacrifices herself to save her daughter and the world itself. The episode is named “The Wizard at the End of the World, and they weren’t kidding, huh?

Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo dies in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2

    Alex Russo and Billie
    Credit: Disney Channel

Like, they really went there and the fans couldn’t have expected all this to go down after just two seasons on-air. Billie is now more tied to the Russos than ever, and there’s one heck of sequel hook if Disney Channel wants to make a Season 3 sometime down the line. David Henrie and Selena Gomez deserve some real credit for keeping such a massive twist a secret through the press interviews about the show. No one caught on to what was going on.

To be fair to the fandom, some of them did suspect that Billie would somehow be related to the Russos. But, having her be Alex’s daughter, only to be ripped away from her mother again by a noble sacrifice? That’s TV operating on all cylinders folks. Fans shouldn’t be too down about the rug getting ripped out from under them though. It seems like emotions were all around judging from that video! Check out what else Gomez had to say right here.

“It’s actually really fun for me to come back and hang out with you guys. It’s honestly been nostalgic for me,” Gomez tells her castmates during that emotional interview. “It’s honestly been a wonderful experience. It’s so fun to see us pass the baton to a new generation.” Hopefully, we get more seasons to see it, and they give us a moment to pick ourselves up after getting the wind knocked out of us.

  • Seven Modern Classic Movies To Rewatch For The Ultimate Fall Vibes

The time has come! The leaves are changing colors, the stores are starting to smell like cinnamon, and everything pumpkin is available at our fingertips! All of this could only mean one thing, and it’s that our favorite way to end our day is with one of these movies for the foreseeable future!

    Halloweentown (1998)

You simply can’t go through the fall/Halloween season without watching Halloweentown. It would be borderline criminal. There is nothing quite like the music that plays when the Cromwell kids first enter Halloweentown, seeing Debbie Reynolds be the greatest movie grandmother of all time, or seeing the quaint town of St. Helens, Oregon, transform on screen into our dream location.

    Practical Magic (1998)

This movie is as close to perfect as a movie has ever been. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman light up on screen and bring such warmth and whimsy into the film. This movie features the best song placement in our memory with ‘This Kiss’ by Faith Hill, and features a quote we have lived by ever since. So remember, always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.

    Knives Out (2019)

A murder mystery featuring Chris Evans as the villain, Daniel Craig as the detective, and a career-high performance from Ana de Armas? Count us in! This movie does a perfect job at keeping you guessing, yet if you watch it again, you will see each clue that led up to the reveal clear as day. It’s the ideal fall family watch with a star-studded cast.

    Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice is synonymous with the spooky season. Like clockwork, the calendar turns to October and we are set ready to sing along to some Harry Belafonte and remember what sparked our love for obscure art and tiny replicas. Beetlejuice has become a cultural mainstay; you can’t go into any Halloween section without seeing the face of Michael Keaton looking back at you, as it should be.

    Twilight (2008)

It is officially Twilight season! We have ‘Eyes on Fire’ by Blue Foundation on repeat, we are relishing in the rainy days, and we are falling right back into a time when the only choice we had to make that held weight was if we were Team Edward or Team Jacob. This movie launched the careers of some of the best working actors today, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, so technically, we have Stephanie Meyer to thank for the best Batman movie!

    Hocus Pocus (1993)

We know we said Beetlejuice is synonymous with spooky season, but Hocus Pocus gives it a run for its money! From the endless quotes that have become a normal part of the cultural zeitgeist to the Sanderson Sisters being on every piece of merch imaginable, there is no escaping what a timeless film Hocus Pocus has evolved into.

    Scooby-Doo (2002)

Scooby-Doo may just be the best casted movie of all time. They nailed every single role and crafted the world of Spooky Island in a way that made it feel real. We still think not making Spooky Island into a real amusement park was a miss of epic proportions. We actually are going to go watch this movie right now, and relish in what masterpiece it is.

  • Here’s The Official Cast For Disney Channel’s Camp Rock 3

Disney Channel and Disney+ are back, once again, to pull on our nostalgic heartstrings. They’ve hit us with the biggest news of the year – Camp Rock 3 is officially greenlit. Disney announced the full cast today, featuring both new and familiar faces. Our favorite childhood stars are returning, and we could not be more excited. “It’s on, it’s on, it’s on!

“The story picks up when Connect 3 lose their opening act for a major reunion tour, returning to their beloved Camp Rock to discover the next big thing. As campers vie for the chance to open for their favorite band, tensions rise and friendships are tested, leading to unexpected alliances, revelations and romances.”

Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television, said in a press release

    The Returning Stars

    Demi Lovato

Yes, it’s officially been announced that Demi Lovato will reprise their role of Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock 3! We’re so glad Demi is back for the third rendition of the iconic Disney Channel movie franchise. Right on the heels of their new album, It’s Not That Deep, Demi is destined for greatness the rest of the year and into 2026. We’ll always be here supporting Demi!

    Maria Canals-Barrera

Momma Connie Torres is back! The Camp Rock franchise certainly isn’t complete without Disney legend Maria Canals-Barrera. You know and love her as the Russo-family matriarch in Wizards of Waverly Place, but we have a special place for her character Connie in our hearts as well. Will she still be the camp chef? Or will she take on a new title in Camp Rock 3?

    Kevin Jonas

Any Camp Rocker knows that Kevin was the comedic relief and one of the best characters in the original Camp Rock movies. He’ll be reprising his role of Jason Gray, the junior Camp Rockers’ favorite camp counselor. Maybe we’ll finally get a solo Kevin Jonas moment?

    Nick Jonas

If you had a crush on Nate Gray in 2008, welcome to the club. We may have read one too many fan fictions about meeting our favorite singer, aka Nick Jonas, at a summer camp and falling deeply in love over playing guitar and “a homemade quesadilla.” All that to say, Nick Jonas is returning to Camp Rock 3!

    Joe Jonas

Obviously, if his brothers Kevin and Nick are returning, Joe Jonas has to be back, too. We couldn’t leave mega superstar Shane Gray out of the picture….let’s just hope their tour bus doesn’t fall over a cliff and into a lake again. We wonder what type of classic Disney Channel shenanigans the Gray brothers will get up to in this new movie?

“‘Camp Rock’ is an important part of the Disney Channel Original Movie legacy, with unforgettable music, energetic storytelling, and characters that live in the hearts of fans to this day. Bringing it back with Kevin, Joe, Nick and Demi is such a full-circle moment, and we can’t wait to reintroduce this world to a new generation.”

Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television, stated in a press release

    The New Faces

    Malachi Barton

Enter camp bad boy Fletch. You may know the name Malachi Barton from Disney+’s Zombies 4: Dawn Of The Vampires and Stuck In The Middle. Barton is a Disney Channel vet and will be a new camper at Camp Rock this summer.

    Brooklynn Pitts

You may know Brooklynn from the 2023 TV show Chicken Girls, but if not, you’ll fall right in love with her character in Camp Rock 3. Pitts’ character, Callie, is the choreography lead in this new movie. Every camper wants her moves, and honestly, so do we.

Image Source: Courtesy of Disney Television Entertainment
    Casey Trotter

Casey Trotter joins the cast of Camp Rock 3 as Cliff, the drummer with his own beat and style. You’ll know Casey from Disney Channel’s The Thundermans: Undercover, but now he’s taking over the Disney movie scene! We can’t wait to hear what kind of musical talent he brings to the big screen.

    Ava Jean

It’s not summer camp in the year 2025 without an influencer or two. Actress Ava Jean is entering Camp Rock 3 as Madison, the intimidating and confident influencer who is always camera-ready. This is probably the new character that we’ll find ourselves relating to the most.

    Lumi Pollack

You’ll know Lumi Pollack from the 2021 movie, The Fallout, starring Jenna Ortega. Now, she’s making her Disney Channel debut as Rosie, the cello prodigy, ready to take Camp Rock by storm. The other new faces better watch out, Pollack is clearly a force to be reckoned with.

    Liamani Segura

Emerging actress Liamani Segura has secured the role of Sage on Camp Rock 3. Sage’s character is described as “bold” and “determined,” but fans know little else about her. You may recognize Segura’s name from Disney Channel’s High School Musical: The Musical and Descendants: Wicked Wonderland.

    Hudson Stone

Another new face to the Camp Rock franchise is 13-year-old Hudson Stone. His character, Desi, is Sage’s brother, so we’re expecting to see a lot of Hudson and Liamani on screen together. Desi is described as “easygoing,” and we know that Hudson is a musician himself. We can’t wait to see his talent shine on screen!

Whoa, what an amazing cast reveal! If you haven’t seen Camp Rock or Camp Rock 2 in a while, take this as your sign to head to Disney+ and get to streaming! Are you as excited about Camp Rock 3 as we are? Which new character are you looking forward to learning more about? Let us know down in the comments or on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter

  • Every Disney Icon, Band Reunion, and Pop Star Cameo at the Jonas Brothers Tour

Big Rob, Demi Lovato, John Legend.
Photo-Illustration: Illustration: Vulture. Photos: Getty Images

The Jonas Brothers have it figured out. So many of their peers and colleagues from Disney Channel or the 2000s/2010s music scene are re-recording their music or making a comeback to the studio. Why not give them a platform for their return? It’s a win-win; their crowd, who obviously is very nostalgic for their favorite Disney band, will love it, the musicians get exposure to their direct audience, and the Jonas Brothers get to book their pals/idols. It’s simply too good. Below, every band jam, pop star surprise, and Disney reunion from the Greetings from Your Hometown tour (More like Greetings from Your Beloved iTunes library.)

*While technically not everyone on this list appeared on Disney Channel, they were absolutely being played on Radio Disney. Or by tween with an iPod Nano in the 2010s. It’s also fair to say they weren’t only famous on Disney Channel, but that’s probably where you first met them.

    Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images

This is real. Demi Lovato reunited with her ex Joe Jonas on the August 10 show to sing Camp Rock favs like “This Is Me” and “Wouldn’t Change a Thing.” They’re exactly where they’re supposed to be — making a big comeback.

His “Beautiful Soul” joined the brothers in Fenway Park before he started “Leavin’” after his set was done.

The crowd was on fire as Big Rob surprised everyone with his “Burnin’ Up” verse during opening night.

The Click Five is now the Click Three (not really, but three original members are still in the band), and they obviously sang, “Just the Girl,” even if she, like, totally wouldn’t care.

A powerhouse singer in her teens and a powerhouse singer in her adulthood, JoJo probably makes everyone almost faint as she came out to sing “Leave (Get Out).” Has Boston checked their seismometer for that date? There might be some interesting readings from all the jumping and dancing.

Cabrera stopped “On the Way Down” in Texas to sing his 2004 hit. Similar to other early 2000s guests, he also re-recorded his hit recently.

It was worth it. After a seven-year hiatus, Ally Brooke, Normani, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui announced their comeback during the Dallas show, singing “Work From Home” and “Worth It.”

5SOS had the perfect crowd to surprise with “She Looks So Perfect.” Because if you bought tickets to see a boy band, wouldn’t you love to see another boy band? The answer is yes.

They were “Meant to Live” on the MetLife stage after re-recording their Columbia Records debut of The Beautiful Letdown. Switchfoot joined the brothers on tour twice, singing “Dare You to Move” in Chula Vista for the second cameo.

All Time Low jumped in at the Gainesville show to sing “Dear Maria, Count Me In.”

Mmmmmm yeah. Another trio of brothers came to sing “MMMBop” for Virginia Beach crowd.

Cartel has a lot to say. They sang “Say Anything (Else)” in Hershey, PA. The band recently rereleased their hit album Chroma, out now.

You don’t need a reason to see Hoobastank. They surprised all the millennials in the crowd to sing “The Reason.” A perfect evening if you ask me.

Joe shared how much Dashboard Confessional has influenced his songwriting, specifically with “Take a Breath.” They sang “Vindicated” in Fenway Park.

A perfect surprise for those who love a good iPod playlist. The Chicago, Tinley Park enjoyed “Hey There Delilah,” and most likely experienced a nostalgic drive home, thinking of their MySpace profile song.

The Jonas Brothers dared to ask: Hey, what other song can we add to the setlist that will make everyone cry? The easiest answer is “All of Me” from John Legend for their LA show.

On opening night, he sang “Loved You Better,” his collab with the boys on Greetings from Your Hometown.

If the world was ending, JP Saxe has the perfect song for it. He sang “If the World Was Ending” and stayed on stage to play guitar during “Gotta Find You.”

The love for Alessia Cara is multi-generational for the Jonas family. Kevin shared how much his family, specifically his daughters, love her music as she sang “Scars to Your Beautiful” in Toronto.

There’s always room to introduce a rising star to new audiences. Russell Dickerson came out to sing “Happen to Me” in Detroit.

Peter Pan Syndrome? Yuck! Kelsea Ballerini singing “Peter Pan” in Dallas? Hooray!

The singer and former Dancing With The Stars star (who famously tried to get voted off the show because he really missed his cat) sang “I’m Yours” in Chula Vista.

  • Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’s David Henrie Reveals How a ‘Tragic Incident’ Forced Justin Russo to ‘Walk Away From It All’

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’s David Henrie Reveals How a ‘Tragic Incident’ Forced Justin Russo to ‘Walk Away From It All’

Growing up as a kid in the 2000s meant running home from school and tuning into whatever show that was playing on Disney Channel. One of those shows that shaped many of our childhoods was none other than the iconic and magical Wizards of Waverly Place. And now the characters we all know and love are back with new crazy shenanigans in Disney+ reboot Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.

In the original show, Alex (Selena Gomez) was not a typical lead who saved the day and knew exactly what to do. She made mistakes and at times, could be too stubborn for her own good. Despite her laidback attitude, Alex’s mischievous adventures made us feel like we were unstoppable. Her funny dynamics with her siblings were more than relatable with Justin (David Henrie) as the smart, trustworthy kind of uptight eldest sibling, Alex, as the middle child with a rebellious spirit, and Max (Jake T. Austin) as the funny and a bit dumb younger brother. Family was the heart and essence of the show. No matter the intensity of their fights or how much trouble they were in, they all loved each other and had each other’s backs in their times of need. David Henrie even coined this specific bond the “Russo family values.”

Fast forward 12 years, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place makes it clear that everything is going to be “anything but a breeze” for Justin Russo—who is now a middle school Vice Principal in Staten Island. The new series follows Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a strong young wizard— who with the help of Alex— barges in Justin’s mundane life with his two boys, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko), and his wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos). Alex, in an attempt to help Billie after she’s been kicked out of WizTech, has positioned Justin to be her new wizard teacher. There is no one Alex trusts more than Justin to take on such a responsibility but problems arise as Justin may not have been totally honest with his family about his past. This new situation inspires him to resume his life as a wizard, pulling him out of retirement and forcing him to face the mistakes he’s made in the past. However, Billie’s exuberant personality may be more similar to Alex’s than Justin had anticipated.

David Henrie shared that Billie has grown up differently than the Russo’s and is not used to the Russo family values at all which is going to create a very fun and interesting dynamic on screen. Billie’s character opens up a whole new world of relatability for new viewers and representation that was so dear to me as a young Latina when watching Alex and the rest of the Russos in Wizards of Waverly Place

There were also certain moments in the new show that original fans may love. When StyleCaster mentioned mannerisms or lines that David Henrie and his co-star Selena Gomez had in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place that resembled their younger selves, Henrie said “Thank you. We worked hard on that!” It is clear that there is much love and effort going into this age of magic so this new series could be what we’ve all “wanted in our wildest dreams.”

Wizards of Waverly Place has always had such a unique cultural impact, and I remember the episode with Shakira and Selena as a significant moment for me, because it was a time where I felt really represented on TV.  Given that Justin is half Mexican and half Italian, will we see more of that Latino or Italian heritage explored in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place

That’s a great question. I think we did so many things to represent our Mexican heritage on the show, with the quinceanera episode and others that I think we’re really meaningful to folks. My character married Giada, who is Italian. In real life, she’s Greek, but she’s Italian in the show so I guess our kids would be like, three quarters Italian and a quarter Mexican. We got a spicy mix, don’t we? That’s some good food right there. I think we definitely want to explore that. We haven’t yet, but I’d imagine we will, because it is a part of our blood. I would imagine in Mexico, there are cool wizard sites for us to see or check out, which we’ve never done before. I don’t know why we haven’t done that.

We definitely should do that, but right now we’re really focusing on this new element in this character of Billie. She is an incredible talent, by the way, and she’s a new mix to the Russo bunch. So if you’re familiar with the Russo values, themes and feelings we bring in a character who contrasts that, who doesn’t understand that at all, and has not known stability or family or what those things can do in your life, so she’s mistrusting of us. So it really is a nice engine to kind of reactivate the themes of the world. And you know, Janice is African American, so we’re representing another demographic on the show in a nice way. So we really are following in the mold of the old but kind of in a new way.

In the first episode, it’s revealed that Billie is destined to save the world–what was going through Justin’s head when Alex tells him he has to train Billie?

You know, I call the first season for Justin of this new show, like his rebirth. Because when you meet him, his family knows nothing about him. They don’t know anything about his magical past. They don’t know anything–that he was a wizard or his past at WizTech or any of that stuff. So when you meet Justin, you’re going, “What happened? Why? How? Huh?” which I love. Throughout the first season, we reveal that there was this kind of tragic incident in the past that caused Justin to walk away from it all, and Billie rebirths this past for him, and it’s welcomed to him, because I think he never felt settled in what happened. He wants to welcome that old piece of him back into his life, and he wants to be upfront and honest with his family, so she really does reawaken a lot inside of him that I think is a very healthy thing for his character.

In the original series, wizards are born with magic but they need to wear something to control it before their powers fully develop at age 12. Now that Justin is Billie’s teacher and his sons, Milo and Roman, are learning that magic exists, will the series explore their own abilities as it progresses? Did Justin have them wear anything to help manage their magic as they grew up?

Ooh, that’s a good question. I think you’re gonna have to watch and see what happens, because I think you’re smart and you’re asking the right questions, and you’ll have to watch and see what happens.

Justin is now a vice principal at a middle school, which is a shift from the high school setting of the original series. Was there a specific reason behind choosing a middle school setting this time around?

Our characters are a little younger, so I think we’re factoring that into the equation. I’m sure as they get older, we’ll probably figure out a way to expand it or change it. But by the way, did you catch the name of the new school? It’s called Greenwald Middle School, and that’s the name of the creator of the show, Todd Greenwald, from back in the day. So we named the school after the creator of Wizards of Waverly Place.

I saw you posted this week with Greg Sulkin who played Mason (in the original show). What can you tell me about that?

Yeah, Greg got to come and visit. Since we started the show, Greg has become and remains a very good friend of mine. I spent a lot of time with him, and he was in town. He was back from London. I was like, “Dude, you got to come check out the set.” So he came and visited and saw it all, and he was just smiling the whole time reliving the memories.

Well, I would love to have every character back on the show, it’s just about doing it right. I want the care that we put into the first episode with me and Alex to be put into every character that comes back, so that way it doesn’t feel cheap. You know, I think the worst thing we could do is just throw someone in there, and then fans will feel like we didn’t understand how much they care about these people. So we want to do it tastefully every step of the way.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place premieres on October 29 on Disney Channel and will stream on Disney + the next day.

New Disney Leak Reveals Early Look at Gravity Falls, Owl House, and Plenty More

Just before the weekend started, the animation space lit up when someone suddenly leaked a lot of never-before-seen internal material from Disney. We won’t link to it, but included in that material is a sizable amount of stuff from the company’s TV animation slate across its Disney Channel and Disney XD networks that goes as far back as the mid-2000s. Gravity Falls, Owl House, you name it: if it’s got a sizable fanbase (and isn’t a Marvel cartoon), then it’s probably featured here in some fashion.

Included in the leak were over 20 pilots, some of which were shows that’d been pitched, but ultimately never went anywhere. Similarly, there were also 40 show bibles—documents creators use to pitch their show, from the tone and characters to breakdowns for potential future seasons. Disney’s animated slate didn’t have quite the highs of Cartoon Network or even Nickelodeon, but what’s here may have you thinking about some shows you haven’t thought about in a while. (Case in point, they’ve got the bibles for Super Monkey Team HyperForce Go! and American Dragon: Jake Long in here, which may take you waaaaaaaay back.)

Setting aside how surprising it is that all this got leaked—and what’s more, whoever did it hasn’t stated why or who they are—what’s out there is admittedly interesting to go through. Fans of particular shows are going to get a lot out of those pilots and bibles, if only to see how these series evolved over time, particularly in terms of their art style. Even more interesting is to see what episodes these creators were pitching: in Gravity Falls’ case, most of these weren’t made, but you can see how parts of them—like Dipper getting into a golf war with Lil’ Gideon—were retooled into actual episodes.

For the creatively inclined, the show bibles are probably going to be the most worthwhile things to sift through. In reading through some of these, they’re quite extensive and can be a good guide to help you figure out how TV works, or even do a similar bible of your own for whatever you’re making. The Ducktales bible, for example, devotes multiple pages to each principle character’s interests, special skills, and core relationships with each other…along with how they’d react to a mummy.

Again, various websites and Twitters have gone through this stuff and put it out there for you to watch or read—and if you like any of these shows, or just animation in general, it’d be worth searching for. io9’s reached out to Disney for comment on the leak, and will update when a response is given.

  • Disney Movie Club Is Closing In Another Blow To Physical Media

Disney Movie Club Is Closing In Another Blow To Physical Media

    Image: Disney

Securing physical copies of a number of Disney classics is about to get a lot harder. Disney has announced today that after 23 years of service, it will be shuttering the Disney Movie Club later this year. Disney Movie Club is a subscription service for diehard fans that, since 2001, has provided an avenue for them to secure DVDs and Blu-rays of countless pieces of Disney media. Members would receive monthly releases, but the real boon of the service was the Disney Movie Club’s deep cuts, which were often mostly-forgotten classics that are otherwise very difficult to get a hold of.

A statement from the company reads, “After 23 magical years, it’s time to say goodbye. After serving over 10 million valued Club Members, we have made the difficult decision to close the Disney Movie Club. We will miss the opportunity to be part of the lives of so many Disney fans, including you, but we will be forever grateful for the time you’ve chosen to spend with us.”

Disney’s move to close the Disney Movie Club comes on the heels of a new deal the company has struck with Sony, which will see the latter taking over the production of physical media on behalf of the former. The deal, first reported by The Digital Bits, does not clarify whether or not Sony will offer its own similar service in light of Disney Movie Club being closed down.

Physical media has been trending downward for a long time thanks to the emergence of digital releases and the advent of streaming services, making a move like this all but an inevitability. Disney launched its own streaming service, Disney+, in late November of 2019, and the service has largely been touted as an incarnation of the promise the Disney Movie Club once held. But you don’t own the films and TV shows on Disney+; they can be taken off the service at any time. And despite its status as Disney’s digital vault, Disney+ is still missing a number of titles that are currently only available in a physical capacity through the Disney Movie Club. The shuttering of the service in a few months, paired with these titles’ absence on Disney’s preeminent service, has many wondering what’ll happen to the precious titles that haven’t been brought over and have no other physical releases available.

The announcement of Disney Movie Club’s shuttering notes that the service will be retired in July of this year, but current members will have until May 20 to place any remaining orders. If you’re a collector of vintage Disney movies and shows, or even just an advocate for the proliferation of physical media and ownership of it, it’s best to act fast.

  • Marvel Fans Are Getting More of One of Our Favorite Teen Superheroes (and Her Dino Friend)

Marvel Fans Are Getting More of One of Our Favorite Teen Superheroes (and Her Dino Friend)

Fans of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur don’t have to wait much longer for our favorite duo to return! Season 2 of the critically acclaimed animated series is heading to Disney+ soon. Here’s everything we know!

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur tells the story of Lunella Lafayette (Diamond White), a 13-year-old super genius living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. When Lunella opens a portal to a prehistoric world, she teams up with the friendly T-Rex Devil Dinosaur (Fred Tatasciore) and becomes Moon Girl, a high-tech roller skating hero.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur season 2 plot and trailer

The trailer for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur season 2 has dropped, giving us a first look the next round of Lunella’s adventures.

At the end of season 1 (spoilers ahead!), Lunella went through a couple of drastic changes: she found out that the original Moon Girl was none other than her own grandmother Mimi (Alfre Woodard), and she ended up trapped in a multiversal void after saving her family.

So what’s in store for Lunella in season 2? Moon Girl is an episodic kid’s show, so don’t expect a really involved story arc. Instead, it looks like season 2 will focus on what the show does best: launching Moon Girl and her best friend Casey (Libe Barer) through a series of adventures, pitting her against a dastardly roster of supervillains, and letting her shine. According to Disney’s official plot synopsis, “as Moon Girl’s superhero-ing intertwines more with her personal life, she must decide if the cost of keeping her identity a secret is worth the toll it takes on her family.”

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur season 2 cast

Who’s in the cast of Moon Girl season 2? Diamond White will reprise the role of Lunella, with Libe Barer and Fred Tatasciore returning as Casey and Devil Dinosaur. Alfre Woodard returns as Mimi, Sasheer Zamata as Lunella’s mom Adria, Jermaine Fowler as Lunella’s dad James Jr., Gary Anthony Williams as Lunell’as grandfather Pops and Laurence Fishburne (who also serves as executive producer) as The Beyonder.

Season 1 of Moon Girl featured some amazing guest stars, from Wesley Snipes to astronaut Mae Jemisin. According to Collider, season 2 will feature even more exciting guests. Their roles haven’t been announced yet, but you can hear a few of them in the trailer. These guests include David TennantEdward James Olmos, Carol Kane, Giancarlo Esposito, SungWon Cho, Cynthia ErivoAndy GarciaRobin Thede, Jonathan Banks, Arsenio Hall, Ann Harada, Jackée Harry, Manny Jacinto, Xolo Maridueña, Alex Newell, Parker Posey, Ephraim Sykes, and Peter Weller. That’s a lot of big names—and they’re sure to play a lot of fun characters.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur release date

You don’t have to wait too much longer to get more Moon Girl in your life! Season 2 premieres on the Disney Channel and Disney XD on February 2, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. The series will hit Disney+ the next day, February 3. If you didn’t know it, now you know!

  • Disney Dreamlight Valley Community Divided After Latest Announcement

Disney Dreamlight Valley Community Divided After Latest Announcement

Disney Dreamlight Valley, the cozy life sim set in a magical world filled with iconic Disney characters, has been in Early Access since August 2022. It’s set to finally leave Early Access this December, but a recent blog post has divided fans: Disney Dreamlight Valley will not be free-to-play upon launch, despite developer Gameloft promising just that for more than a year.

During the Early Access period, those who wanted to immerse themselves in one of Dreamlight Valley’s six Realms had to purchase one of three Founder’s packs, which gave them access to the game along with a collection of Moonstones (in-game currency) and in-game cosmetics. The Founder’s pack tiers were Standard ($30), Deluxe ($50), and Ultimate ($70), with the more expensive tiers offering more Moonstones and more cosmetics. Xbox Game Pass subscribers could enjoy Disney Dreamlight Valley for free, however.

Throughout the entirety of the Early Access period, Gameloft promised that, upon the December 5 launch, Disney Dreamlight Valley would shift to a free-to-play model with purchasable expansion options. An FAQ response that is still on the Gameloft site reads: “After Early Access, we have plans to add paid expansions that will add significant content to the game. These optional expansions will add new content (including characters) to the base game. However, we are currently focusing on delivering a great, complete experience first.”

But now, Gameloft says that won’t be the case. Instead, there are three launch editions: the $40 base game, a $50 physical Cozy Edition, and a $70 Gold Edition that includes the upcoming A Rift in Time expansion.

    Image: Disney / Gameloft

“As we look ahead to the official launch, with the learnings we’ve gained from Early Access, we’ve made the decision to remain a paid game for the foreseeable future. This means we will not make the transition to be a free-to-play game when we leave Early Access on December 5,” the Early Access update on the official Disney Dreamlight Valley site reads. “This choice ensures that Disney Dreamlight Valley will be able to continue delivering on a premium game experience for all players. It’s important to us that we maintain our promise to keep delivering free content updates that add new characters, realms, clothing, furniture, and more surprises to your Valley. Purchases requiring moonstones will remain optional, fair, and match the level of quality players have come to expect. Players will still be able to collect free Moonstones via Dream Snaps and Chests, or optionally choose to purchase them.”

Reactions from players have been mixed, with some praising the decision to avoid the messiness that is often standard with F2P microtransactions, and others lambasting the decision to renege on a year-long promise. “I didn’t buy it since I was waiting for free to play, guess I’m not buying it ever,” one X user wrote in a reply to my post asking for responses. Others, replying to the official post announcing the update, were confused as to how their Founder’s Edition purchases would carry over to the official game launch.

Though the update makes clear that Founder’s Edition owners will retain access to the game, get all unique cosmetic items from the Gold Edition free of charge, and receive 2,500 Moonstones, it seems that they will have to shell out the $30 for the expansion pack, even if they spent $70 on the Ultimate Edition Founder’s option. “Seems super scummy that founders/legacy players will have had to pay more, overall,” wrote a commenter on X.

Kotaku reached out to Gameloft for clarification and was directed back to the aforementioned blog post, which also stated that a November 1 live stream will provide more details on the expansion pass and future updates. Disney Dreamlight Valley launches on December 5 for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch. You can buy Founder’s Editions up through December 4.

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To Friday

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To Friday

I think I can speak for the collective when I say this week has felt long and arduous. I feel like I’ve used every last shred of energy saved up to even survive all the workweek, so needless to say, I’m exhausted. But, that’s not stopping me from gearing up for another week of new music.

If you don’t know by now, we have a weekly thing going here. I round up all of these new, glorious releases every Friday and you, dear reader, run to your streaming platform of choice and listen! It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, one that I look forward to weekly.

This week is no different, we’ve got heavy hitters coming out with new music now that the summer is essentially over. The Disney Trinity is returning to music soon: Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus all have music coming within the next two weeks. It’s almost like it’s 2006 and I’m tuning into a Disney Channel Original Movie soon.

And then, even further on the horizon, we have Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS looming. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here, it’s only August 18! And while it may be my roommate’s birthday, it’s also a week full of new music.

    Let’s Get Listening!

Demi Lovato – “Confident (Rock Version)”

Demi Lovato has one of the strongest vocal ranges in the music industry- which makes her voice perfect for rock and roll music. She’s able to hit all the notes that pierce your soul, added the heavy drumbeat and scathing electric guitar to give us the versions of her old pop songs that feel fresh. It’s apart of her new REVAMPED album, coming September 15, which features rock versions of all our fave Demi songs.

We first saw the new rock era of Demi on her 2022 HOLY FVCK tour, and fans have been anxiously awaiting to hear Demi’s new spin on old faves. Alongside her all female band, Demi Lovato reinstates herself as the queen of genre-blending sound, a true musical genius.

Khloe Rose – The In Between (album)

Khloe Rose is our feature artist of the week: someone who has the ability to sing, write, and play multiple instruments deserves their own segment…especially when that someone is 19-year-old Khloe Rose. She’s created a flawless album with The In Between, which includes the title track about those in-between moments in relationships…where you can’t quite figure out what’s happening.

It’s a refreshing feeling to have all of your emotions put into words, which is exactly what her music provides. It’s therapeutic to listen to, and her music is insanely catchy. She’s one to watch these days, if you’re a fan of artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift- check out Khloe Rose.

Icona Pop – “Fall In Love”

Icona Pop makes music for those who are ready to let loose and have a good time. The duo has given us bangers like “I Love It (ft. Charli XCX)”, “All Night”, and “Desire” with Joel Corry, but now they’re here with “Fall In Love.” It’s the perfect taste of their new album, out September 1, CLUB ROMANTECH. “Fall In Love” feels fun, lighthearted, ethereal in ways, and makes us feel all the emotions falling in love does. Icona Pop says,

“‘Fall In Love’ is about that moment when you fall sooo hardfor someone it’s almost like hitting a wall; you get all dizzy and almost lose touch with the ground andcan’t focus on anything else. The track is kind of an experiment for us to play around with our poppierside; we wanted to play around with mixing up our lyrics, but approach the melody almost like you wouldwith a sample, except it’s just us singing.”

Mantra of the Cosmos – “X (Wot You Sayin?)”

Mantra of the Cosmos is like if you assembled the Avengers of UK music and put them into a band. Consisting of successful musicians from iconic bands, this group knows what they’re doing. I mean, when you put together Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays, Black Grape), Zak Starkey (The Who, Oasis), Andy Bell (Oasis, Ride), Bez (Happy Mondays, Black Grape) and latest members, Brix Smith of The Fall, you know you’re getting the best music.

Their latest single “X (Wot You Sayin?) is pure fun. A refreshing drumbeat and creative lyrics meld into harmonica runs to create a genre-blended single. Every single member of this band put a little of their magic into the song, which is prevalent when you’re listening.

Surf Mesa – “First Time (ft. Stevie Appleton)”

Surf Mesa is making a name for himself quickly as a sought-after producer and someone who can make a banger track every single time. Ever since his essential debut with “ily (I love you baby)”, the world has been enjoying Surf Mesa’s ability to produce Beachy tracks that send you to the coast of California every time you press play. “First Time” with Stevie Appleton is classic Surf Mesa- chill, instilling within you some sort of wanderlust to be wherever the water is and the drinks are.

Following hit singles like “Manzanita,” it’s an exciting time to be a fan of Surf Mesa. He doesn’t disappoint, giving you what you didn’t know you needed.

  • Disney Deletes Streaming Movie That Only Released In May

Disney Deletes Streaming Movie That Only Released In May

The “deleting shows and movies just to save some tax money” trend that is rippling through major streaming networks has seemingly hit a new, farcical low with the removal of the film Crater from Disney Plus. Crater was released on May 12, 2023.

The plan—and Disney hasn’t confirmed Crater was wiped for this, but why else would it be—works like this: media companies have learned that by removing TV shows and movies from their streaming platforms they can write down the value of their “content assets”, which in turn reduces their overall tax bill. It also reduces the licensing fees these companies are paying.

It’s a ruthless strategy that betrays just how overrun Hollywood has become by executives more interested in Wall Street than the stuff their companies are making, and it’s incredibly depressing not just for those who worked on these shows/movies, but for fans and, well, anyone who can appreciate not everything has to be an instant blockbuster for it to have some kind of meaning and impact.

Until last week, the shows and movies being culled—at Disney and other studios—had included those released somewhat recently, but for whatever had underperformed vs expectations, like 2022’s Willow and Y: The Last Man (which I liked!). That was bad, but Disney’s decision to wipe Crater—released just seven weeks ago—is taking the piss.

    Crater | Official Trailer | Disney+

The film, a family sci-fi adventure, was by all accounts fine. Nothing extraordinary, but nothing anyone involved would be embarrassed by either. It starred Mckenna Grace, from the latest Ghostbusters movie and Handmaid’s Tale, along with Billy Barratt (from Apple’s dangerously underrated Invasion) and Kid Cudi. People who were into it said it was fun, and also had a sad ending, and what else would you need or expect from a movie Disney made for kids and sent straight to a streaming service.

Well, I mean, you would expect the movie to stick around and be able to be enjoyed by people in the months and years to come. But now it’s just gone. There’s no way to legally view this film. It’s as though it never existed. One of the key selling points for streaming services was that they were going to eliminate piracy. Now here we are, just a few years later, and piracy is going to be the only way a ton of TV shows and movies are ever going to be saved.
