  • No, Mount Rainier isn’t about to erupt. Seattle scientists debunk rumors

Scientists with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) are pushing back against a viral online report that falsely claims Mount Rainier is showing signs of increased seismic tremor activity.

    What they’re saying:

“There is currently no unusual seismic activity at Mount Rainier,” the PNSN said in a statement this week. “The signal being referenced is actually radio interference, most likely due to rime ice buildup on the antenna of one of our seismic stations.”

    mount rainier photo

Mount Rainier, from Carlyon Beach, southern Puget Sound, Washington. (Marli Miller/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)

The misleading claim originated from a Daily Mail story that circulated widely on social media, suggesting that “America’s deadliest volcano” had entered a “tremor phase” possibly signaling an eruption. The story cited one seismic graph that appeared to show strong, continuous shaking — data scientists say this is not from the ground, but rather from the station’s aging radio equipment.

What scientists say the data really shows

    seismograph image

    (Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN))

    What we know:

According to the PNSN, the apparent tremor comes from station STAR (EHZ UW 01), located just west of Mount Rainier’s summit. STAR is one of the last remaining analog stations on the volcano, transmitting data through a low-power radio link that can be disrupted during storms.

“When the radio receiver loses signal, like the static you might hear on your car radio when a signal fades, the seismic signal becomes just strong noise,” the release explained.

In short, the “tremor” is electronic noise — not a geologic event.

For comparison, the PNSN provided another seismogram from station RCS, located about 2.5 miles to the northeast. That nearby digital station showed normal, low-level background activity: brief spikes from wind shaking, small glacier slips and minor rock or ice falls — all typical for a high-altitude glacier environment.

    seismograph image

    (Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN))

If there were real tremor or earthquake activity beneath the volcano, experts say it would appear simultaneously across multiple stations around Mount Rainier, not just one. “Any unusual seismic activity (significant earthquakes or volcanic tremor) would show up on both of these stations — and several others — and would be detected and reported by us within a short time,” the PNSN said.

Weather, not the volcano, is to blame

    Dig deeper:

The recent stormy weather on Mount Rainier likely caused the interference, the PNSN said.

When ice forms on the antenna of analog equipment, it can block or distort the radio signal that transmits seismic data, producing a noisy trace that looks like continuous shaking.

Meteorologists also reported heavy snowfall and freezing fog around the summit area at the same time, consistent with conditions that can cause such interference.

Scientists urge caution about misinterpreting data

    Local perspective:

Seismologists stressed that misinterpretations like this can create unnecessary alarm.

“Sloppy journalism by non-scientists who don’t understand seismology nor check with those that do can generate confusion in the public,” the PNSN said.

The organization reminded the public that any genuine volcanic unrest would be promptly detected and communicated through official channels — as occurred in July when a small earthquake swarm was quickly analyzed and explained.

For now, Mount Rainier remains quiet and stable.

    How to verify seismic information

    What you can do:

The PNSN encourages anyone interested in real-time monitoring to view live, verified data directly from its network at pnsn.org. The network operates dozens of instruments on and around Rainier, continuously tracking earthquakes, volcanic tremor, and other ground motions across the Pacific Northwest.

For now, scientists say there’s no cause for concern — only another reminder that weather, not magma, was responsible for this week’s viral noise.

  • Major Pacific Northwest earthquake could trigger another along West Coast

Most of us have probably heard that when it comes to earthquakes, “The Big One” could happen at any time, but a new study has now found that if the “big one” happens in the Pacific Northwest, it could trigger an even bigger one and affect cities up and down the West Coast.

    The backstory:

In 2001, the 6.8 magnitude Nisqually earthquake toppled parts of buildings, left 400 people hurt and caused billions of dollars in widespread damage. That earthquake serves as a stark reminder that another earthquake like this, perhaps bigger, is still looming.

    Nisqually earthquake damage

“This is essentially a certainty, and how we respond to it is the only part that’s uncertain,” said Dr. Chris Goldfinger, geologist and the lead author and principal investigator of a 2025 study.

    What they’re saying:

That study found if a major earthquake happened on the Cascadia subduction zone, that would trigger San Andreas Fault to go off a short time later.

“We discovered that the earthquake deposits near where the two faults meet at Cape Mendocino were stacked basically directly on top of each other, with apparently no intervening time passing between the two events,” Goldfinger said.

Cancadia subduction zone and San Andreas Fault

He shared a video with FOX 13 showing the sequence of Cascadia earthquakes from the past 10,000 years. It also shows San Andreas earthquakes going off. He told FOX 13, it’s not a matter of if a big one will happen, but when.

So, what is considered a big earthquake?

“If you want to think of it as t-shirt sizes, from extra-large, which might be a 9.1 or 9.2 is where we think the maximum is, down to magnitude-7 earthquakes,” Goldfinger said.

He explained those earthquakes would affect Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, and San Francisco, cities up and down the coast.

West Coast cities affected by "The Big One" earthquake

    Local perspective:

These findings come as the Great Shakeout happens on Thursday, October 16. It’s a time when millions of people worldwide practice earthquake drills at work, school and home.

Despite drills like these, Goldfinger says we’re still not prepared because many of these areas were built on top of ticking time bombs.

“We have very, very fragile infrastructure in most of our towns and cities,” Goldfinger said. “So, we have a lot of unreinforced masonry buildings, lift-slab concrete buildings that pancake in an earthquake and things like that, and the progress to replacing those and retrofitting those is very, very slow, and, you know, this is a long term, expensive process.”

In the meantime, he told FOX 13 that there are some things people can do now to get their home earthquake ready. For example, if you have a gas hot water heater, he said make sure those are strapped down so they don’t tip over and break a gas line, which could start a fire during an earthquake.

“Go around your house and start thinking about ‘what would my house be like in an earthquake?’” Goldfinger said. He also recommends surveying tall, heavy items in your home that could tip over, and make sure your home is bolted to the foundation, because there are a lot of older homes that are not.

“You don’t want your house to slide off of the foundation during the earthquake, that’s going to total it probably,” he said.

  • How China Threatens to Force Taiwan Into a Total Blackout

Chinese military exercises around Taiwan have sparked an urgent effort in Taipei and Washington to address a critical vulnerability on the island: It is almost entirely dependent on imported fuel.

Recent Chinese drills showed how China would encircle and strangle Taiwan by blocking its life-sustaining shipping lanes, a strategy with potentially less risk than staging a full-scale invasion, as Beijing pursues its stated goal of gaining control of the self-ruled island, by force if necessary.

  • Camp Mystic makes controversial decision about future of Texas camp where 27 died in flooding

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Camp Mystic, a long-running private Christian girls’ summer camp where 27 girls and counselors died in Texas flooding on the Fourth of July, will reopen next year, according to the camp’s operators.

The reopening will take place in conjunction with the camp’s 100th anniversary and one year after the deadly flash floods that swept through the facility along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County this summer.

The summer camp made the announcement on Monday in an email to families enrolled in the 2025 camp. Some families have criticized the camp over its safety measures and preparedness in the wake of the tragedy.

Leaders said they will reopen Camp Mystic Cypress Lake, a sister site opened in 2020 that was not destroyed by the flood. The original campus, which is located along the Guadalupe River and suffered “devastating damage,” will remain closed and is not expected to reopen next year, officials added.

“As we work to finalize plans, we will do so in a way that is mindful of those we have lost,” the letter said, according to The Associated Press.

The owners said they will be designing and building a memorial “dedicated to the lives of the campers and counselors lost on July 4th,” according to ABC News.

“We hope this space will serve as a place of reflection and remembrance of these beautiful girls,” the camp’s statement read. “We continue to pray for the grieving families and all those who lost loved ones.”

The letter also said leaders are working with engineers and other experts to determine how the camp will implement safety changes required under newly passed state bills.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Camp Mystic for comment.

FAITH BRINGS LIGHT TO DEVASTATED TEXAS TOWN AFTER DEADLY FLOODING DISASTER

The news has drawn a mixed reaction: some family members of the deceased strongly oppose the planned reopening, while alumni and the Eastland family, who own the property, have expressed support.

Cici Steward, whose 8-year-old daughter, Cile, remains missing, said, “The truth is, Camp Mystic failed our daughters.”

“For my family, these months have felt like an eternity. For the camp, it seems like nothing more than a brief pause before business as usual,” she said in a statement Tuesday to The New York Times. “Camp Mystic is pressing ahead with reopening, even if it means inviting girls to swim in the same river that may potentially still hold my daughter’s body.”

Other parents said they had received almost no other communication from the camp in the months after the flood, then were suddenly notified by email that Mystic planned to reopen.

Blake Bonner, whose 9-year-old daughter, Lila, died in the flooding, told the Times that the families were not consulted about, and did not approve, the memorial the camp announced.

The campers and counselors were killed when the fast-rising floodwaters roared through a low-lying area of the summer camp before dawn on July 4, 2025.

The destructive flooding killed at least 136 people in the region, prompting widespread criticism of local preparedness.

County leaders were asleep or out of town, the AP reported. The head of Camp Mystic had been tracking the weather beforehand, but it’s unclear whether he saw an urgent warning from the National Weather Service that had triggered an emergency alert to phones in the area, a spokesperson for the camp’s operators said in the immediate aftermath.

The camp, established in 1926, did not evacuate and was hit hard when the river rose from 14 feet to 29.5 feet within 60 minutes.

  • Multiple brush fires spread across the region

Multiple brush fires spread across the region

Several large brush fires broke out across the region this weekend amid the ongoing dry weather.

A large brush fire had been smoldering for a day off Cain Road and Highland Avenue in Salem before flames broke out early Sunday morning.

Salem firefighters were trying to contain the blaze via a controlled burn, according to reports, but also had to work to protect buildings and homes close to the flames. The fire also threatened a cell tower at one point.

A public safety alert just before 10 a.m. urged residents to avoid the area.

In Beverly, a brush fire broke out near 40 Enon St., behind McDonald’s toward Wenham Lake, on Saturday blanketing the area in smoke.

Two brush fires were also reported in Topsfield on Saturday. And yet another brush fire was reported in Middleton Sunday afternoon near Emerson Brook Reservoir.

A red flag warning is in place across Massachusetts, indicating extreme fire danger.

  • Man killed in Peabody trailer home fire

Man killed in Peabody trailer home fire

PEABODY — A 72-year-old man was killed in a trailer park fire early Saturday morning.

Flames broke out in a trailer home on lot 24 of the Peabody Trailer Home Park at 252 Newbury St. around 5:30 a.m., Peabody Fire Chief Jay Dowling said.

Several drivers on Route 1 spotted a fire burning inside of the trailer park and called 911. Responding firefighters also saw flames coming through the roof of one of the trailers as their fire engine sped down the northbound side of the highway, Dowling said.

The trailer was fully engulfed in flames once crews arrived and the blaze was starting to reach the exterior of another trailer on lot 12, Dowling said.

Firefighters stopped the fire from fully spreading to the second trailer and knocked down the blaze within a half hour, Dowling said.

They found the man’s body inside of the destroyed trailer once the flames were doused, Dowling said.

His name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

A woman who was inside of the trailer on lot 12 was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

    No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

  • Beverly firefighters to deliver donations to hurricane victims

Beverly firefighters to deliver donations to hurricane victims

BEVERLY — Beverly firefighters are heading to North Carolina on Saturday to deliver donations to help victims of Hurricane Helene.

Fire Chief Pete O’Connor said the department put out a request for donations on Wednesday and got a “huge response.”

    “It’s been phenomenal,” he said.

People have been dropping off items at Beverly Fire Department headquarters at 15 Hale St. over the last few days. Firefighters loaded the items onto two rental trucks and will drive them to a designated donation drop-off site at the North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina.

Donated items include clothes, fans, charcoal grills, first aid supplies, flashlights, blankets and hygiene products, among other items. Donations are being accepted until 8 p.m. Friday.

O’Connor said the relief effort was the idea of Lt. Mike Kraus. The Peabody and Danvers fire departments also became involved and collected donations.

“It was definitely a team effort,” O’Connor said.
