  • Miguel’s ‘CAOS,’ fueled by anger and angst, is his first studio album in nearly a decade

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — If you wondered why Miguel didn’t release a studio album for nearly a decade, his response is simple: life.

“I needed to do some growing. I had to get my (expletive) together.”

Since 2017’s “War & Leisure,” the world has experienced a variety of globally-impactful events: a second Donald Trump presidency, a coronavirus pandemic, an American social justice movement, an ongoing three-year war between Russia and Ukraine, and a two-year Israel-Hamas war that recently entered a ceasefire.

“We’re just seeing, I think, a big question mark of humanity being asked in real time every day,” Miguel said. “I needed to go away and recalibrate and just get in touch with my anger and figure out how best to move forward with that in a productive way … I’m really glad that I did because it’s what informed this album.”

“CAOS” is a sharp departure from the superstar’s vibey, sensual sound that made him a hit-making staple in R&B. The singer-songwriter’s fifth studio project, morphed from his 2023-scrapped “Viscera” LP, dropped Thursday, coinciding with his 40th birthday. He wrote on all 12 tracks and handled the bulk of production with Ray Brady. The lone feature belongs to the legendary George Clinton of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honorees Parliament-Funkadelic.

Led by the singles “RIP,” “New Martyrs (Ride 4 U),” “El Pleito,” and “Angel’s Song,” the album radiates his trendsetting fusion of alternative rock, R&B and electronic sounds, but in unfamiliar, darker tones. The music evokes feelings of urgency, protest and rebellion.

This album is the most angsty, angry album I’ve ever made. But I think underlying and underwriting the message and the themes is this core need to express discontentment in a healthy way that creates the feeling and the future that I want.”

    The thief of joy

Miguel also faced internal plights: divorce, family death and industry disillusionment.

“The value of my work became about outside appreciation as opposed to internal gratitude,” said the artist who’s earned four top 20 tracks on the Billboard 100. The admission comes from a Grammy winner who’s created new-day classics such as “Adorn,” and “Sure Thing” and fan favorite mood-setters like “All I Want is You” and “Skywalker.”

“When you see something in culture be really successful … you can start comparing … and it’s such a slippery slope,” said Miguel, who released bits of music during his hiatus, like the EPs “Te Lo Dije” and “Art Dealer Chic 4,” and songs “Don’t Forget My Love” with Diplo in 2022 and “Sweet Dreams” with BTS’s J-Hope earlier this year. “It’s about connecting more deeply and having a deeper conversation with my audience, as opposed to wanting to make the big song.”

    Not a sure thing

During his hiatus, Miguel and Nazanin Mandi divorced. The singer began dating Mandi at 19 years old before marrying in 2018. They divorced four years later.

“It was a painful thing to go through” said Miguel, who wrote “Always Time” to address the breakup. “Some things you do have to let go, if you really, really love it, and I think that was a good indication that I needed to take some time for myself.”

Last month, in celebration of his son’s first birthday, Miguel publicly revealed he was a first-time father with filmmaker and former Vogue China editor Margaret Zhang. “Angel’s Song” is dedicated to his child.

    Spanish-language songs

“CAOS,” Spanish for chaos, also features another turn from the genre-bending artist: Spanish-language songs. While 2019’s “Te Lo Dije” featured Spanish recordings of previous songs, this project contains original tracks like “El Pleito” and “Perderme.”

“It was always floated as ‘You should lean into Latin as a marketing (tactic).’ … It just didn’t feel natural,” said Miguel, whose mother is African American and father is Mexican American. “Here I am now, and it’s more about my identity and who I am and who am proud to be.”

    Back to the future

Miguel, serving as this year’s scholar-in-residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School, is also focusing on his S1C venture geared toward providing Black, Mexican and Latino creators with development and financial support. He also appreciates the futuristic-R&B sound that swelled during his absence, which he’s largely credited with helping to introduce.

“I love that I can hear my influence in some of the music today,” said Miguel, who gained younger fans in 2023 after “Sure Thing” went viral on TikTok and Instagram more than a decade after its release. “You’re like, OK, we were in the right place.”

Despite grappling with staying true to yourself and your music, not being captive to the charts, Miguel feels appreciated by his fans, and centers himself in gratitude.

“I’m so lucky to have found a core audience who really rides with me through all of my evolutions,” he said. “I do think that I’ve been appreciated. And I think that there’s opportunity for it to be more, and more importantly, deeper.”

Diplo Accused of Distributing Revenge Porn in New Lawsuit

    [ad_1]

A federal lawsuit filed in California on Thursday by a woman identified as Jane Doe accuses the DJ and producer Diplo of distributing revenge porn. According to the suit, Doe began communicating with Diplo, born Thomas Wesley Pentz, on Snapchat in April 2016, when she was 21 years old, and they exchanged pornographic images for two months. Doe and Diplo began having sex, according to the suit, and their relationship continued until October 2023, the month before Doe learned that Pentz had been distributing images and videos of their sexual encounters without her knowledge or consent.

Doe’s suit is the second set of revenge porn allegations filed in recent years against Pentz, whose globe-trotting lifestyle has become grist for his prolific social media presence. According to her account, she made Pentz aware that she didn’t want him to record their sexual activities without her consent or distribute images or video to third parties. In November of last year, Doe claims, another woman she didn’t know at the time reached out to her and said she was in possession of images and videos of Pentz and Doe having sex. The woman told Doe that she received the materials from Pentz via Snapchat in October 2018. The suit claims that Diplo continued to distribute Doe’s intimate images and videos up until the present.

On November 7, according to the suit, Doe reported Pentz to the New York Police Department, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The NYPD didn’t immediately return a request for comment, and it’s unclear whether Pentz has been in New York since November.

Representatives for Pentz didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Pentz achieved musical acclaim and prominence during the 2000s, but in more recent years, he has developed a public profile more readily tied to his social ubiquity. A staple of red carpets and A-list sports events, his winking presence tends to land as a Waldo-like trope.

That persona has endured through a separate sexual misconduct case that made headlines for a period beginning in late 2020. In October of that year, a woman named Shelly Auguste alleged that Pentz sexually assaulted her, recorded their sexual activity without consent, and distributed revenge porn. The following year, after Pentz and Auguste sued each other, he denied her claims in a detailed Instagram slideshow, calling her a “stalker” attempting to extort him. In September 2022, an arbitrator awarded Pentz $1.2 million after finding that Auguste’s social media posts violated a mutual restraining order she had signed with Pentz.

Auguste is currently suing Pentz for claims including sexual battery and defamation; a civil trial is scheduled for January 2025. In November, according to a Pitchfork report, the Los Angeles city attorney’s office began reviewing Auguste’s revenge porn allegations after she filed a police report. (The office didn’t return a request for comment on the status of that review.) “For more than three years,” Pentz’s attorney Bryan Freedman told the outlet, “Shelly Auguste has been orchestrating an ongoing smear campaign against Wes—and this is just more of the same.”

Doe is seeking damages from Pentz for violations of revenge porn statutes. “Tragically, this is not the first time the defendant has shamed and violated a woman by disseminating intimate images without her consent,” Helene Weiss, an attorney for Doe, said in a statement. “Diplo’s alleged illicit pattern of behavior illustrates the harm he’s caused Jane Doe, and other young women just like her.”

Creating music, running triathlons and being a dad to three sons, Diplo is news. I don’t want to do too much caffeine, and I don’t want to drink alcohol, so I put a little bit, a little drop sometimes.”

Diplo is a fan of psychedelic and marijuana. Living unabashedly, he shares his drug use with no judgement and no shame. He is a fame of the cannabis to the point he started a new company to add to his various business interests.

    Fall 2023 Fashion Outlook

    [ad_1]

One of my favorite things to do every night before bed is fill my online cart with tons of clothes. Call me delusional or a dreamer, but I love to think about what I would buy in an ideal world. Spending all this time window shopping also helps me figure out what’s trending, and what styles might be surging into popularity soon.

I’ve always been the type of person who emphasizes the importance of a bomb outfit. Nothing impacts my confidence like what fit I’m rocking. It’s my duty to serve.

With New York Fashion Week in full swing, the streets of the city are flooded with luxury-clad off-duty models showing us the ropes. Fashion Weeks are a good indicator of what everyone else will be wearing soon enough.

The stylish cohorts walking the streets of FW are already sporting future trends – like when everyone was wearing the MSCHF Big Red Boots around. Before you know it, we’ll be ditching our linen sets and fluorescent colors for whatever Bella Hadid is wearing. It’s a never ending rollercoaster, but we prevail.

Fall fashion 2023 will have elements of the familiar, plus a few dark horses. There will be pieces that look like an old friend to you, buried deep in your closet from when they were last trending, and pieces that will soon flood fashion store floors in mass quantities.

If you’re feeling a little lost shopping for those fall fits, here’s what I’ve found:

  • Chris Rock Escapes Burning Man After He And Diplo Hitch A Ride In The Back Of A Pickup Truck

Chris Rock Escapes Burning Man After He And Diplo Hitch A Ride In The Back Of A Pickup Truck

    [ad_1]

    By Miguel A. Melendez, ETOnline.com.

Thousands of other attendees, however, have been asked to shelter in place and conserve food and water.

Chris Rock is no longer trapped at the Burning Man Festival. The 58-year-old comedian made it out after he and Diplo hitched a ride with a fan who offered them a ride on the back of his pickup truck.

The famous DJ took to Instagram moments ago and posted a video showing him, Rock and a few others in the bed of a pickup truck. Diplo shared that they walked for six miles before someone offered them a ride. The comedian rocked a New York Knicks jacket, black hat and shades. After getting out of dodge, Rock made it clear what he wanted next, a cold brew!

Shortly after Diplo shared the update on Instagram, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department announced the closure of the entrance to Burning Man for the remainder of the event, which was slated to run until Monday. Officials are asking people to avoid the area or “you will be turned around.”

For most of the day it seemed like Rock would be among the thousands upon thousands who would be stuck at Burning Man, after a heavy rainstorm pummeled Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The inclement weather triggered a “shelter in place” order and festival organizers implored attendees to conserve food and water.

Rock had been documenting the experience on his Instagram Stories, which included a since-expired Story in which he shared that “because of the flooding, the port-o-potties reportedly can’t be emptied. And because the gates are closed, people can’t get in to fill generators or deliver supplies.”

Rock later posted, on Saturday morning, a short video showing the heavy mud making it impossible to get around the area. Another attendee posted a video on TikTok showing him walking in ankle-deep mud. The Burning Man X account on Friday offered a grim update.

“For anyone in BRC, help each other stay safe. The gate and airport in and out of Black Rock City remain closed,” the tweet read. “Ingress and egress are halted for the time being. Stay prepared for adverse weather conditions continuing through the night and into Saturday.”

The area was rocked with heavy rain Friday night and into Saturday morning. As of Saturday afternoon, only emergency vehicles are allowed to go in and out of Black Rock City in northwest Nevada.

Festival organizers have said more rain is expected overnight Saturday, with rain and thunderstorms expected to batter the area early Sunday morning and continue into the afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, a flash flood watch will remain in effect in the area through Monday morning.

There’s upwards of 70,000 attendees at Burning Man, and at this point it’s unclear when they’ll be given the clear to go home. The Burning Man Festival — described as “a global ecosystem of artists, makers, and community organizers who co-create art, events, and local initiatives” — commenced the summer of 1986 in San Francisco. The festival moved to Nevada in 1991.

Fieri, a longtime country music fan with ties to California’s Stagecoach Festival, has lassoed in a headlining performance from Diplo, the Grammy-winning DJ who famously moonlights as a country artist. The two have been friends since as early as 2019, when they ripped shots at the SoCal festival for Diplo’s “So Long” music video.

What happens when Apple CEO Tim Cook strolls into a Diplo concert in Las Vegas?

Apparently Cook takes control. The tech titan was recently spotted in Las Vegas for the opening night of Adele’s highly publicized residency, where he eventually made his way over to XS Nightclub at the Wynn to join the Grammy-nominated DJ and producer. Believe it or not, it’s not the first time the two have hung out.

If the below TikTok video posted by Diplo is any indication, he made a “deal” which ultimately resulted in Cook joining him and taking control of the stage’s cryo blasts.
