  • Detroit Lions Announce 3 Roster Moves Following Loss to Packers

    [ad_1]

The Detroit Lions are shuffling the deck after their rough Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers. On Tuesday, the team announced three roster moves involving their practice squad.

Linebacker Anthony Pittman was released after playing 20 special teams snaps against the Packers on Sunday, where he recorded one tackle. Pittman has been a reliable depth piece in Detroit for years, but the Lions are looking to tweak the back end of their roster following a game where both special teams and depth were tested.

Taking his place are two additions:

    • Offensive lineman Devin Cochran, a 6-foot-7, 330-pound tackle who spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, officially joins Detroit’s practice squad. His massive frame could provide much-needed depth for an offensive line that has already dealt with injuries early in the season.
    • Linebacker Monty Rice, a former third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans who most recently spent time with the New England Patriots, also signs on. Rice brings starting experience, having appeared in 38 NFL games with 11 starts over his career. He has tallied 129 total tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and 3 quarterback hits since entering the league in 2021.

Rice could provide an immediate boost to Detroit’s linebacker depth, especially with the defense still finding its footing under new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.

The Lions have already shown they’re not afraid to tinker with the roster to address problem areas. After Sunday’s 27-13 loss to Green Bay, depth and execution were clearly issues. With the Chicago Bears coming to Ford Field in Week 2, Detroit is hoping these new moves will give them a little more stability, and maybe a spark.

  • Detroit Lions Sign Giant Lineman Following Injury Setback

    [ad_1]

The Detroit Lions are wasting no time addressing their offensive line depth after losing Jamarco Jones for the season. According to his agency, the team is bringing in Devin Cochran, a towering tackle who could help stabilize the trenches.

    Why the Move Was Necessary

On Monday, Dan Campbell confirmed that Jamarco Jones will miss the entire year due to an ankle injury suffered in practice. Jones was already a surprise roster inclusion, edging out Dan Skipper, but his injury left Detroit thin at tackle heading into Week 2.

The Lions needed a quick solution, and Cochran fits the bill as a developmental player with sheer size and upside.

    Who Is Devin Cochran?

At 6-foot-7 and 330 pounds, Cochran is a mountain of a man, giving Detroit another giant up front to go along with Giovanni Manu.

Cochran went undrafted in 2022 but signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he spent his rookie season on the practice squad. Unfortunately, he lost the 2023 season to a knee injury but has remained on NFL radars thanks to his size and raw potential.

What It Means for the Roster

Right now, it’s unclear whether Cochran is joining the 53-man roster or the practice squad. The Lions have one open practice squad spot after promoting running back Jacob Saylors last weekend. If Cochran lands on the 53, a corresponding roster move will be required.

Either way, Detroit is clearly shoring up its depth at a critical position. Protecting Jared Goff, and keeping the run game rolling, depends heavily on having reliable bodies in the trenches. Cochran may not be a household name, but his arrival is a step toward keeping the Lions’ offensive line stable.
