    Business fraud is real. According to a report by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, “U.S. Businesses will lose an average of 5% of their gross revenues to fraud.”

    One of the most common types of fraud is accounts payable fraud. This refers to anytime a business-to-business (B2B) payment occurs illegally. AP fraud can be committed by employees, vendors, suppliers, cybercriminals or scammers.

    There are two main types of AP fraud: internal and external AP fraud. Let’s go over both.

    Internal AP fraud

    Internal fraud starts with someone from within the organization. This could be a billing scheme in which bills are paid to fraudulent beneficiaries posing as legitimate ones.

    It could also be employee reimbursement fraud, in which an employee creates false expense claims that they have the business reimburse them for.

    Another form of internal AP fraud is kickback fraud. This is when an employee works with an outside bad actor, sends them funds fraudulently, and shares the profits (hence the kickback).

    External AP fraud

    External AP fraud starts with someone outside the company. It could take the form of a wire transfer scam, in which the perpetrator pretends to be a legitimate vendor and asks the company to transfer funds to a nefarious bank account.

    Similarly, external AP fraud could be a phishing attack, in which the attacker tries to gain access to the business’s computer system with a virus disguised as a link. Identity theft is another form of external AP fraud. This is when someone steals ID information from an employee and uses it to gain access to AP funds.

    In some cases, external AP fraud happens through an account takeover. This is when someone gets access to AP information and starts making fraudulent payments to themselves or others.

    How to detect AP fraud

    To prevent AP fraud (and the massive losses that can come with it), a business needs to take serious precautions. Fraud can be hard to detect, so you must take extra care to have preventative systems in place.

    Here are some tips on how to detect and prevent AP fraud:

    • Look for anomalies. If an invoice or payment looks off, take a closer look. Any irregularities should be investigated.
    • Automate AP processes. Instead of relying on manual data entry, use accounts payable automation software. This helps prevent human errors and maximizes cybersecurity.
    • Perform regular audits. Make a habit of regularly reviewing AP processes. This can help expose vulnerabilities that need to be addressed.

    One of the key benefits of the implementation of a circular economy model is the reduction in waste. By prioritizing the reusing, repairing, and recycling of resources, the circular economy model minimizes the amount of waste that ends up in landfills or incinerators.

    According to the European Environment Agency, waste management, industrial processes, and product use account for over 12% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. Consequently, a circular economy model reduces the environmental impacts associated with waste disposal and mitigates pollution and greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing.

    Investing in eco-friendly manufacturing processes and products is crucial for minimizing environmental impact. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 80% of a product’s environmental impact is decided in the initial design stages. Companies can increase their green credentials by using sustainable materials, reducing energy consumption, and minimizing waste.

    Simply knowing who’s included in our most underserved populations can be a challenge that makes public sector outreach nearly impossible. To overcome these obstacles and better serve consumers, we must first identify the underserved and their needs. Public agencies can use two powerful tools to help reach the most vulnerable: credit and alternative data.

    Defining underserved populations

    The first thing agencies must do is understand what an underserved population is. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has a good definition specific to healthcare: individuals who have experienced healthcare disparities. Healthcare disparities can manifest due to a lack of available services, difficulty accessing care and limited knowledge about navigating the healthcare system or finding providers. Agencies looking to define underserved populations can adapt this definition to their specific fields.

    The Federal Reserve also has a good working definition: people who don’t have access to a bank. This lens is handy because a lack of access to essential banking functions is a significant barrier to receiving other public services. Without a bank account, options to cash checks are limited and often come with additional hurdles like stricter controls, timing requirements, increased fees and more. Those without a bank account also can’t receive direct-deposit benefits or savings interest rates that could help them get ahead. Identifying the unbanked or underbanked first is an excellent way to use data to find and reach more individuals likely underserved by public benefits.

    Research shows underserved populations regularly fit into specific demographic groups. These groups include the unemployed and elderly, veterans, disabled persons, those living below the poverty line and those residing in rural areas. Through a combination of factors, these groups are at the highest risk of needing government benefits while often participating in assistance programs at lower rates.

    Out-of-reach insights

    As it stands, government agencies could better understand who uses their services. A lack of comprehensive understanding is partly due to outdated privacy laws and red tape; until recently, government websites weren’t allowed to collect cookies on their visitors. Still, many government agencies can be more effective in using the data they have at their disposal. Improving outreach is one way to close this gap, and we can do so through the judicious use of good data.

    The private sector is good at leveraging data to identify and reach its customers. Most brands and companies know the demographic data of their typical consumers — and they’re experts at turning that knowledge into profits. Public sector agencies can operate in the same way.

    For example, take the bus system in Montgomery County, Maryland. The county’s Department of Transportation redesigned its bus system to introduce the Flash. Before the redesign, bus riders often had to make multiple transfers, adding inconvenience to their lives.

    The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) reviewed whom this problem impacted, the peak times it affected them, and how the city utilized the busing system. Then, it created new routes, resulting in significantly improved and efficient customer experiences. Innovations like these are precisely what other public sector agencies need to embrace to serve constituents more effectively.
