Nvidia, California Team Up on AI Training Initiative, Labs | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

California wants to equip its workforce with AI skills by partnering with Nvidia on training across the state. The AI chip giant is headquartered in Santa Clara and is currently the third most valuable company in the world.

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the “first-of-its-kind” partnership that will focus on training students in AI, creating jobs, and using AI to solve real-world problems.

“Together with California, Nvidia will train 100,000 students, college faculty, developers, and data scientists,” Huang stated, adding that the aim was “to prepare California for tomorrow’s challenges” and “unlock prosperity.”

Related: How Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Transformed a Graphics Card Company Into an AI Giant: ‘One of the Most Remarkable Business Pivots in History’

The partnership brings AI workshops, labs, curriculum, certifications, and technology from Nvidia to community colleges. Individuals have the opportunity to enhance their careers through these efforts.

The state of California benefits from a pipeline of AI talent and will explore how it can nurture early-stage AI startups through the effort.

“We’re in the early stages of a new industrial revolution that will transform trillion-dollar industries around the world,” Huang stated.

AI has helped reduce repetitive tasks and streamline communication, say company leaders. A recent Microsoft study found that even though employers are looking for candidates with AI skills, only 39% have provided AI training for existing employees. And the majority of AI use in the office is secretive, with 78% using AI tools at work “without guidance or clearance from the top.”

At the same time, it’s expensive to create AI: One model could cost $100 million today and tens of billions of dollars in the next few years. AI could also drive energy emissions up, as seen by Google’s July environmental report.

Despite AI’s drawbacks, it could have a positive impact in California through the new partnership. California is the most populated state in the nation, with over 39 million residents. California’s unemployment rate hit 5.3% in February; as of June, there were 999,897 people unemployed in the state.

  • Google Reveals AI Smartphone Before Apple: AI Pixel 9 Launch | Entrepreneur

Google Reveals AI Smartphone Before Apple: AI Pixel 9 Launch | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Google beat Apple to the punch by releasing new smartphones packed with AI.

At the Made By Google event on Tuesday, Google interspersed the Pixel 9 release with celebrity appearances and jabs at Apple. Keke Palmer and NBA all-star Jimmy Butler were on stage and Google executives demonstrated what the Pixel camera could do.

At the event, Google revealed four new Pixel phones embedded with Google’s own Gemini AI assistant: the $799 Pixel 9, the $999 Pixel 9 Pro, the $1,099 Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the $1,799 Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which unfolds into an 8-inch tablet.

Related: How Google CEO Sundar Pichai Shook Up His Leadership Team for the AI Era

The Pixel 9 is Google’s first line to fully ship with Gemini Nano multimodality, meaning that users can access the AI assistant through voice, text, code, image, and video. Users don’t have to have a network connection to access Gemini Nano and the Pixel 8 Pro, released last year, uses the same system.

The Made By Google event usually occurs in October, and moving it up to August, one month ahead of Apple’s expected iPhone release, could be Google’s attempt to outshine Apple, Bloomberg mused.

Apple is reportedly launching Apple Intelligence and bringing AI to iPhones this fall for the 15 Pro, Pro Max, and any new iPhones. The new, upcoming phones could prompt Apple’s existing user base to upgrade their old iPhones for AI features.

Apple currently dominates the $61.5 billion U.S. smartphone market, with the iPhone capturing 58.81% of the market share compared to the Google Pixel’s 4.6%.

What can Google’s AI really do?

Google took the tasks that users turn to their phones for, like checking the weather, and gave them an AI boost. For example, the new Pixel Weather app features an AI weather report, while Call Notes gives phone calls AI-generated transcriptions that are saved on the phone, not the cloud, for security.

Pixel Screenshots saves phone screenshots in a separate app so users can search through them with AI, and not lose them on their camera roll. The Pixel Studio image generator creates new images on the spot, and Google demoed how to use the app to make invites to a party.

Google’s pre-event advertising asked Gemini to write a breakup letter and start it “Dear Old iPhone.”

But the first Gemini demo took three tries to work. Still, Google used that as an opportunity to take another swing at Apple by emphasizing that it was a live demo — alluding to Apple’s prerecorded ones.

Google also claimed that the Pixel 9 had the “world’s first AI-powered camera” and compared a photo taken by the new Pixel 9 Pro XL to the iPhone 15 Pro Max without naming Apple.

  • Why Morgan Stanley Analysts Doubled Apple iPhone Predictions | Entrepreneur

Why Morgan Stanley Analysts Doubled Apple iPhone Predictions | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Apple entered the AI game last month with Apple Intelligence, a suite of new features designed to bring AI straight to iPhone, iPad, and Mac screens. Apple’s AI has a catch though: it only works on the newest iPhones and it could be the reason why millions of iPhone users with older models seriously think about upgrading, say Morgan Stanley analysts.

Morgan Stanley analysts named Apple a top-pick stock on Monday, after which Apple shares jumped to an all-time high, per Bloomberg. Apple Intelligence is a “clear catalyst” for iPhone upgrades and will enable Apple to sell nearly half a billion iPhones in the next two years, analyst Eric Woodring stated.

Apple Intelligence is expected to come out this fall for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max — older iPhones will not have access to Apple’s AI. The update offers AI-generated emojis, a smarter Siri, and direct access to ChatGPT, though some anticipated Siri AI upgrades may arrive next year.

Related: Apple Is Expanding What The iPhone Can Do. Here’s What’s Changing Right Away.

“We believe that there is record level of pent-up demand entering the iPhone 16 cycle later this year,” Woodring noted, adding that Apple Intelligence delivers “unique-to-the-Apple-ecosystem” value.

Morgan Stanley previously forecasted that Apple would sell around 230 million iPhones in the same time frame, making the new prediction more than double the previous one.

Apple is also uniquely positioned to be the AI “base camp” for its customers, “just as it has done for digital content (iPod) and social media (iPhone),” wrote Morgan Stanley analyst Ananda Baruah.

Other analysts at different firms have made similar predictions. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives told Reuters in June that more than 15% of existing iPhone users could buy the new iPhone Apple is expected to release this fall.

Related: Apple Labels These 3 Iconic Products ‘Vintage,’ and Soon-to-Be ‘Obsolete’

Ives estimated that 270 million iPhone users have not bought a new model in the past four years.

More than half of Apple’s overall revenue in the second quarter of 2024 came from iPhones; Apple has the majority of the market share for smartphones in the U.S.

At the time of writing, Apple was the largest company in the world with a $3.584 trillion market cap. Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, and Amazon followed.

  • Six tips for districts to avoid the next funding cliff

Six tips for districts to avoid the next funding cliff

    [ad_1]

This is a tough summer of budget cuts, forcing many districts to reduce staff and cut back on purchases. For school and district technology leaders, the end of the school year also means the end of billions of dollars of federal COVID-19 relief funding that was available to K-12 schools through various packages–money that was used to implement 1:1 technology programs that were essential for remote learning. We’ve been calling it the “funding cliff”–that time when the additional single-purpose funds have been spent, and schools have to return to their typical annual budgets.

The funding cliff, and resulting cuts to services and equipment, creates a significant barrier to digital equity in schools, as consistent access to devices and connectivity is one of the five domains of Digital Promise’s Digital Equity Framework. Funding cliffs can also be caused by the loss of extra funds from bond and referendum projects, and something as simple as gifts to the school. To effectively support teaching and learning, a school technology program must approach all expenditures by asking how the purchase or new staffing position will be sustained with future funding.

Let me explain: Every item purchased with the school tech budget comes with the financial upfront cost, as well as ongoing maintenance, support, and replacement costs. While special projects provide funds for the upfront costs, schools are often left to find local funds for the ongoing costs. We consider this to be the “total cost of ownership.”

School and district leaders committed to digital equity allocate resources and dedicated personnel to ensure the sustainability of their systems and technology programs. As experienced technology leaders, we share several strategies with IT leaders in the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program to avoid future funding cliffs, therefore building sustainability into school programming and technology purchases. These can be tailored to support your district’s policies and procedures, and will provide you with a good place to start planning for sustainability. For more details on funding for sustainability, check out Digital Promise’s recently updated Technology Sustainability Toolkit.

Strategy 1: Develop a technology lifecycle plan

Technology purchases are often cyclical; we know that certain equipment must be replaced every 3-5 years. By creating a lifecycle plan, major expenditures can be scheduled to avoid major purchases in the same budget year. For example, in year one, network equipment is replaced; in year two, desktop computers are replaced; in year three, mobile devices are replaced; and so on. This type of budget planning allows a department budget to be about the same year after year. Also, short-term leasing allows expenditures to be spread over several budget cycles to balance budgets. This sample Technology Lifecycle Plan is an example of how a district could balance technology expenditures year-over-year.

    Strategy 2: Establish technology standards

Schools can reduce costs for support and training by standardizing their equipment. For example, when a district purchases one model of device for all schools, it reduces its costs for training, support, and repair parts. The tech support staff will be more efficient, reducing the time needed to provide support, because they will have fewer warranty partners and require less training to support devices. Also, combining orders will allow for better discounts for a larger quantity.

Strategy 3: Disclose the total cost of ownership with all purchases

Schools are often gifted with technology. However, while the tech may have been a gift, there are additional costs that people don’t consider, such as the purchase of licenses, repairs and parts, and a replacement device in 2-3 years. By including these costs before a gift is accepted, the technology budget is not forced to reallocate funds for these “gift” purchases.

Strategy 4: Be creative in providing support!

Technology support has two expenses: the cost of repair, and the cost of lost use (the cost to students and teachers when they are not able to learn and teach because the technology is broken). There are several ways in which schools can reduce the cost and time to complete repairs:

    1. Work with vendors to complete repairs on-site. Some vendors will provide training and provide access to parts, allowing for a quick turnaround of repairs.
    2. Create student tech teams, where students are trained to provide tier 1 support for school technology. This can be done as a class, where students earn course credit and industry certifications, and can be extended into paid summer internships. Digital Promise’s Student Tech Team Toolkit can assist schools in creating a student tech team.

Strategy 5: Use data to make informed decisions

In the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program, we analyze repair claims each month to identify trends and be proactive in avoiding future damage claims. Recently, we saw many repair claims for one specific component on a model of hardware. This early detection allowed us to work with the manufacturer for extended warranty support, and to provide support tips to the tech staff to reduce future damages and claims.

    Strategy 6: Increase cybersecurity efforts

Ransomware continues to be a real—and expensive—threat to schools. A district’s investment in cybersecurity efforts is an investment in risk mitigation and lowers the chances of falling prey to attacks. Moving to single sign-on (SSO) or multi-factor authentication, implementing password management tools, transitioning to passphrases, and teaching staff how to recognize phishing attempts are all ways districts can keep their district’s data secure. For further information go to CoSN’s Cybersecurity page.

Effectively managing a technology budget requires planning and flexibility to ensure teachers and learners have the tools and access they need. What strategies have you been using to balance your technology budgets and avoid future funding cliffs?

To dive deeper into these strategies for avoiding a funding cliff and planning for sustainability, check out our recently updated Technology Sustainability Toolkit.

    [ad_1]

Disclosure: Our goal is to feature products and services that we think you’ll find interesting and useful. If you purchase them, Entrepreneur may get a small share of the revenue from the sale from our commerce partners.

It’s difficult to do your best work when you’re uncomfortable. So, if you’re working from a home office or going into an office with poor climate control this summer, you may find it a struggle to get anything done until the room temperature evens out. But you can take greater control of the temperature with a Klima Smart Thermostat, now $10 off for a limited time.

This smart thermostat and controller is compatible with more than 10,000 models of mini split and window A/Cs, or air-to-air heat pumps. It’s easy to install in just a few minutes on your own and gives you complete control of the A/C or heat from your phone. Klima takes over the control of your unit’s remote so you can control it through your smartphone. It must be installed in the same room as the unit, and you will need one Klima per unit.

With remote access, you can set schedules for cooling or warming to automate the temperature so it’s always comfortable when you arrive. That will also help save on energy bills since you can turn the system off when you’re not there.

Klima is full of convenient features, like voice control for hands-free thermostat adjustments and appliance health monitoring to alert you if your A/C or heat pump needs maintenance soon. It has open window detection that turns off the A/C automatically and offers smart zoning so you can adjust temperatures on a room-by-room basis to avoid wasting energy. With the guardian mode, you can also set minimum and maximum temperature levels.

Stay comfy this summer while saving energy and money.

Right now, you can get a Klima Smart Thermostat for $10 off the regular price of $145—just $134.99 for a limited time.

  • Carousel Digital Signage Cuts Through the Noise with Carousel Daily

Carousel Digital Signage Cuts Through the Noise with Carousel Daily

    [ad_1]

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, April 30, 2024 – Carousel Digital Signage has launched a new media delivery service that will change the way organizations engage with their audiences. Carousel Daily allows organizational leaders to take important messages direct to intended audiences, pushing need-to-know news and information to mobile devices. The service extends the reach of traditional digital signage content well beyond the facility walls, enabling seamless communications to thousands of devices.

Carousel Daily is a unique initiative that was created to cut through the noise of the workplace or learning environments where essential communications may be overlooked or forgotten. The Carousel Daily flips the script by empowering internal-facing organizations to reach the right audience, at the right place, and at the right time. Delivered to iOS devices, Carousel Daily bulletins are accessible through an app installed on organization-issued or personal devices.

Carousel Cloud customers can deliver the same visual communications that they display on their fixed digital signage or create unique feeds specifically designed for more mobile audiences. Carousel Daily Feeds are distributed as links, QR codes or configured via MDM for users. The app allows for the inclusion of external URLs within the feed, seamlessly guiding viewers to essential destinations for tasks such as training completion, video viewing, CEO messages, annual enrollment, and any other matters demanding their attention. The service also provides analytics to help administrators measure audience engagement, including responsiveness to each call to action.

“The Carousel Daily allows our customers to get the most value out of their communications efforts, and it does so without bombarding audiences with endless feeds full of information they don’t need,” said Eric Henry, President, Carousel Digital Signage. “Users can target people with the precise information they need to act on. Our corporate customers can go straight to the employees to announce a new training, or remind them to sign up for new benefits. Our K12 customers have the flexibility to create alternate feeds for students and parents, and retail operations can send internal updates relevant to store managers. The beauty is that nothing fundamentally changes about how they use Carousel Cloud. Customers use the same scheduling and content management toolsets to reach their audiences in new, exciting and impactful ways.”

Carousel Daily comes free with a Carousel Cloud subscription and is licensed by audience size to meet the organization’s needs. Carousel Digital Signage partners with JAMF for customers that leverage mobile device management (MDM) services to manage, secure and deploy Carousel Daily onto end-user devices. As Apple Education Partners, Carousel and JAMF are dedicated to bringing the best Apple Experience to education and corporate customers.

Plenty of business leaders and entrepreneurs rely on headphones to zone in with music and take calls throughout a given workday. At the same time, if you’re totally inaccessible with noise-canceling over-ear headphones, that might not make your employees or colleagues feel like they can access you when they need to.

There’s a different type of headphone technology that could be a good middle ground. For a limited time only, you can get these Mercato Open-Ear Bluetooth Headphones for $39.95 (reg. $69) with code GET10.

This is the best price online for these headphones. They work by sitting on top of the ear, allowing the user to hear and interact with the outside world while also saving their inner ears from noise damage. Designed to provide pain-free listening and lasting comfort, the Mercato Open-Ear Bluetooth Headphones have an ergonomic design that loops over the ear.

While an unusual and seemingly indirect design, the Mercatos promise to deliver premium sound with a deep base and a wide range. They’re great for workouts and running outside, so you can stay attuned to the fast-changing environment around you. An IPX5 water-resistant build also makes these headphones ideal for the outdoor adventurer.

Great for wearing at the office and on business trips, the headphones have a lengthy battery life of six hours per full charge. And while they do allow you to access the outside world, they also have dual noise-canceling mics to keep your calls professional and clean.

Don’t forget that you can get these Mercato Open-Ear Bluetooth Headphones for $39.95 (reg. $69) with code GET10.

  • Vivi for Teachers Launches to Bring Free Classroom Technology to Educators

Vivi for Teachers Launches to Bring Free Classroom Technology to Educators

    [ad_1]

Vivi, the only wireless screen mirroring and digital signage solution purpose-built for education, today announces the launch of Vivi for Teachers. The free web-based application makes it simple for teachers to actively engage with their students using their individual devices and displays.

With Vivi for Teachers, students can share their content and screens directly to the classroom display in seconds, without wasting valuable class time finding the right cable or dongle to connect. Vivi for Teachers also includes a built-in virtual whiteboard that students can use to work out problems – encouraging more students to participate by reducing the anxiety often accompanying speaking up in front of peers.

“A big pushback on tech post-COVID has been that it can easily turn students into passive learners,” says Juliana Finegan, VP Educator Experience at Vivi. “Schools have made big investments in 1:1 devices, but they need to be used effectively to have the intended result – active engagement in learning. Vivi for Teachers offers a free solution to encourage and enable collaboration, peer feedback, and student-driven learning. With it, students can easily share their thinking, show off their creativity, and give class presentations faster and with less stress.”

Megan Oliva, 2nd grade teacher in Austin, Texas agrees, sharing that her students “love sharing their work and showing their classmates how they got to an answer. They ask me to use Vivi every day now. It is easy to use for me and my students which is key.”

Vivi, which currently helps over 2,000 schools, has subscription-based offerings for schools and districts with additional instructional tools, digital signage, announcements, and emergency alert capabilities. Vivi for Teachers is its first free offering specifically for teachers to encourage student engagement and classroom interaction through wireless screen sharing. Vivi has found that 86% of teachers saw increased student participation and excitement in sharing their work because of using Vivi for Teachers student screen share in their classroom.

    About Vivi

Used by over 2,000 schools, Vivi combines wireless screen sharing and digital signage into a single solution, purpose-built for education, that drives more value for districts from their existing investments in display technology and student devices. For more information, visit vivi.io.

  • Every Remote Worker Needs These $99.99 Beats Studio Buds+ with Noise Cancellation | Entrepreneur

Every Remote Worker Needs These $99.99 Beats Studio Buds+ with Noise Cancellation | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Disclosure: Our goal is to feature products and services that we think you’ll find interesting and useful. If you purchase them, Entrepreneur may get a small share of the revenue from the sale from our commerce partners.

In a world where eight in 10 remote-capable professionals are working hybrid or fully remote (according to a Gallup survey), it’s crucial to have tools that support focus, concentration, and productivity, no matter where you are. An absolute must is a pair of wireless earbuds with noise cancellation.

While you can’t go wrong with a set like the Beats Studio Buds+ True Wireless, they can get a little pricey. However, if you grab an open-box pair, you can save 41% and get them for only $99.99, normally $169.99.

Open box: The trick for saving 41% on new buds.

What does open box mean? Exactly what it sounds like. Think of these earbuds as excess inventory from shelves that were shipped back to a warehouse, as they could no longer be sold. As a result, their packaging is imperfect, meaning you’re getting brand-new earbuds at a fraction of their usual retail price.

    Your key to productivity.

But let’s focus more on how great the Beats Studio Buds+ True Wireless earbuds are for hybrid and remote hustlers. They have active noise canceling to help you tune out background noise, like while you’re trying to get work done at the coffee shop or airport, and a transparency mode so you can be aware of your surroundings, like if you want to order a muffin or cross the street without removing the earbuds.

The Beats Studio Buds+ have up to 36 hours of combined listening time with their case, meaning you can stay connected for virtual meetings or hands-free calls for several workdays before needing to recharge. The earbuds also have on-ear controls for managing calls and dual-beam microphones that help filter out external noise for high-quality sound.

Up your arsenal of work tools with the Beats Studio Buds+ True Wireless earbuds, which are $99.99 (reg. $169.99) with these open-box ones.
