  • Criminal investigation underway into car fire on westbound Interstate 70 near Genesee exit Friday morning

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A criminal investigation is underway into a car fire on westbound Interstate 70 near the Genesee exit Friday morning, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Westbound I-70 closed down to just one lane, and mountain traffic backed up for nearly 40 minutes to Morrison Friday morning, Denver7 Traffic Expert Jayson Luber reported.

The vehicle fire was reported around 2:20 a.m. Friday, Jeffco Sheriff’s Office Director of Public Affairs Mark Techmeyer told Denver7.

Drivers were diverted onto U.S. Route 40, which parallels I-70, according to Luber. Some drivers tried to get off at the Morrison exit to get to Highway 40. Luber advised it might be quicker to go through Evergreen to get around the closure.

  • Semi tractor-trailer veers off Interstate 270 bridge at 56th Ave. Tuesday morning

    [ad_1]

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A semi tractor-trailer veered off the Interstate 270 bridge at 56th Ave. around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, the South Adams County Fire Department said.

Firefighters arrived to find the tractor trailer with heavy damage. First responders had to extricate the driver. A Platte Valley ambulance took the driver to the hospital for medical treatment with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Commerce City Police Department.

One lane of traffic on eastbound I-270 was blocked after Vasquez Boulevard by the semi tractor-trailer crash. Traffic slowed from Interstate 25, and Denver7 Traffic Expert Jayson Luber recommended morning commuters use southbound I-25 to eastbound Interstate 70 instead.

The crash closed 56th Ave. between Eudora and Sand Creek Streets going under I-270. Brighton or Vasquez Boulevards are the best alternatives, according to Luber.

The Commerce City Police Department said it appears as though there is structural damage to the bridge, but it will require further inspection.

  • One person dies in crash involving car and RTD bus on westbound Interstate 70 at Holly Street Monday morning

    [ad_1]

DENVER — One person died in a crash involving a car and RTD bus on westbound Interstate 70 at Holly Street Monday morning, the Denver Police Department (DPD) confirmed.

The wreck happened around 6:25 a.m. As the bus on Route 15L was heading westbound on I-70, it was rear ended. When first responders arrived on scene, the RTD bus driver did not report any injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was killed in the crash, RTD confirmed.

Westbound I-70 is closed at Holly Street, putting traffic on E. 45th N. Drive — previously Stapleton Drive North — over to Colorado Boulevard where Luber expects there to be backup at the stoplight there. Drivers on I-70 caught behind the closure are backed up to S. Peoria Street and Interstate 225.

Luber recommends morning commuters use westbound Interstate 270 or southbound Interstate 25 instead. Anyone on westbound I-70 east of Central Park should use side roads or I-270, I-25. Anyone not on westbound I-70 should use side roads past Colorado Boulevard, according to Luber.

The RTD bus was not in service at the time of the crash, according to DPD, and so there were no passengers on board.

DPD told Luber, officers will keep westbound I-70 closed back after Quebec Street as they investigate the wreck.

  • Rollover wreck on I-70 between Ward Road and 32nd Avenue creates extended closure Thursday morning

Rollover wreck on I-70 between Ward Road and 32nd Avenue creates extended closure Thursday morning

    [ad_1]

A rollover crash on Interstate 70 between Ward Road and 32nd Avenue created an extended closure Thursday morning.

A semi truck rolled over on the overpass, spilling large pieces of tubing across the multiple lanes of the roadway.

The three left lanes were closed on the eastbound side, and the three right lanes are closed on the westbound side.

This is expected to be an extended closure, Luber said.

“Use 6th Ave. or other roads other than I-70,” Luber recommended.

    [ad_1]

ARVADA, Colo. — Smoke from a building fire drifted across Interstate 70, limiting visibility between Wadsworth Boulevard and Kipling Street Tuesday morning.

“It looks like a storage facility that is on fire with lots of smoke,” Denver7 Traffic Expert Jayson Luber said.

The Arvada Fire Department was dispatched to the self storage facility next to Carr Street, west of Wadsworth, just after 6:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The frontage road on the north side of I-70 closed due to the fire, according to Luber.

More than 40 firefighters worked together to get the flames under control, including members of the Fairmount Fire Protection District and West Metro Fire Protection District.

  • Colorado workers’ compensation company releases new data on road dangers

Colorado workers’ compensation company releases new data on road dangers

    [ad_1]

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Driving can be dangerous — for those who drive all day for a living or those who commute to and from an office job.

Workers’ compensation insurance company Pinnacol Assurance released new data Wednesday showing motor vehicle fatalities outnumber other job-related deaths by a 2-1 margin.

The data shows the most dangerous times on the roads are 9-11 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to Pinnacol Assurance safety learning specialist Monica Cabrera.

    Denver7

“We theorized that in the morning, that caffeine is dwindling. And then at the end of the day, we have so many distractions, we’re ready to get home. And that’s when you’re more likely to get hurt,” Cabrera said.

Pinnacol Assurance encourages companies to help by making safety a priority. Examples include making sure employees aren’t required to respond to emails or texts at all times, and implementing driver training, especially for people who don’t drive as their primary job.

“It’s healthcare workers, it’s police officers, it’s non-commercial drivers, they’re the ones that are more prone to getting injured, because they don’t have as robust safety trainings when it comes to driving,” Cabrera said.

JFW Trucking in Commerce City has four dedicated safety directors.

JR Saenz, one of those four, said JFW Trucking has one-on-one coaching for drivers and technology in company vehicles that holds them accountable.

“The biggest tool that we have is our dash cam systems. They’re both outward and inward-facing,” Saenz said.

The cameras even know if a driver picks up their phone to take a call. Even professionals deal with distractions, JFW Driver Jaime “Jimmy” Villagrana said.

“It’s tough to not pay attention, sometimes I’ll get a text from the family,” Villagrana said.

Even with safety technology in their vehicles, Villagrana siad drivers learn that they have to be focused on the road at all times.

“You have to just be watching for everything, scanning ahead, looking right, looking left and looking for the two wheelers, the four wheelers, the 18 wheelers, the pedestrians, just everything,” Villagrana said.
