  • Jack in the Box Sells Del Taco to Yadav Enterprises for $115 Million

    The California company dates back over 60 years and was owned by Jack in the Box

    Yadav Enterprises finalized a deal this week to purchase all 550 Del Taco restaurants from parent company Jack in the Box for $115 million in cash. The San Diego-based hamburger giant paid $585 million for America’s second-largest Mexican restaurant chain just three years ago. “We are confident we have entered into a transaction with the right steward for Del Taco in its next chapter of evolution,” CEO Lance Tucker said in a statement.

    Yadav, whose company is headquartered near San Jose, already owns more than 300 franchised restaurants, including Denny’s, TGI Friday’s, El Pollo Loco and Corner Bakery locations. The company also owns golf resorts in Northern California, near Oceanside and in India.

    CEO Anil Yadav has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years, starting his career as a fry cook for Jack in the Box in the 1980s. “I grew up with seven siblings in one home trying to make ends meet,” Yadav told Franchising.com. “Those days I wasn’t working to thrive, I was working to survive.” After working his way up through the restaurant, he bought his first unit at age 25 in 1989. By 2017 his companies were earning $625 million every year. Today, Yadav lives in Alameda County. He’s the former president of the Indo-American Associations of Northern California and once headed his local cricket club.

    Del Taco was founded in 1964 by Ed Hackbarth, a former employee of Taco Bell founder Glen Bell. “I helped several of my competitors get started,” Bell said in his 1999 biography Taco Titan. “People seem to think we ought to hate each other, but we’ve stayed good friends.”

    Glen Bell opened his first Taco Bell in Downey but had experimented with other restaurants in San Bernardino before he hit it big. The Inland Empire town was ground zero for the fast food revolution after the McDonald brothers set up shop there in 1940. Curious food folks came from all corners, trying to understand the new phenomenon and develop their own takes on the new way of eating. The fast food revolution of the 1950s was born at the corner of 14th & E Streets at the world’s first McDonald’s. Today that site is a museum dedicated to the company.

    The Del Taco deal is expected to close early next year and gives Jack in the Box some financial breathing room. “This divestiture is an important step in returning to simplicity,” Jack in the Box CEO Lance Tucker said in a statement. “We look forward to focusing on our core Jack in the Box brand.”

    (AP) – Denny’s says it’s closing 150 of its lowest-performing restaurants in an effort to turn around the brand’s flagging sales.

    About half of the closures will happen this year and the rest in 2025, the company said during a meeting with investors Tuesday. The locations weren’t revealed, but the restaurants represent around 10% of Denny’s total.

    Stephen Dunn, Denny’s executive vice president and chief global development officer, said in some cases, the restaurants are no longer in good locations.

    “Some of these restaurants can be very old,” Dunn said during the investor meeting. “You think of a 70-year-old plus brand. We have a lot of restaurants that have been out there for a very long time.”

    Others saw traffic shifts during the pandemic that have yet to reverse, he said.

    On Tuesday, Denny’s reported its fifth straight quarter of year-over-year declines in same-store sales, which are sales at locations open at least a year.

    Restaurant inflation is outpacing grocery price inflation, which makes it harder for some customers to justify eating out, Denny’s said. And when they do eat out, they often head to fast-casual brands like Chipotle or fast-food chains. Denny’s said family dining — the category in which it competes — has lost the most customer traffic since 2020.

    Still, Denny’s said it has bright spots, including a value menu that lifted sales in its most recent quarter and growing sales of its delivery-only brands like Banda Burrito.

    Shares in Denny’s Corp., which is based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, tumbled almost 18% on Tuesday.

    Nearly two dozen people were injured Monday after a vehicle plowed into the wall of a Houston-area Denny’s restaurant, police in Texas said.

    Calls started around 11:22 a.m. CT about a vehicle that crashed into the south wall of the restaurant, police in Rosenberg, Texas, said in a Facebook post. Rosenberg is located about 35 miles southwest of Houston.

    The Rosenberg Police Department said all of the victims were conscious when they were transported to local hospitals. “The injuries ranged from minor lacerations to severe injuries, but all appear to be non-life threatening,” the post reads. The victims range in age from 12 to 60 years old, according to CNN affiliate KHOU

    Footage posted by KHOU shows a gaping hole in the side of the restaurant with a mangled SUV still inside. The footage shows law enforcement tape blocking the hole and authorities at the scene.

    The 30-year-old driver of the vehicle was uninjured and an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, according to KHOU. Police urged drivers to avoid the area and expect delays.

    Denny’s said they had no comment about the incident at this time.

    A 72-year-old woman died Thursday afternoon after a Denny’s sign fell and crushed a car in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, according to police.

    A spokesperson for the restaurant chain said the company is working with authorities to assess the situation.

    “Denny’s is aware of the incident that took place at our Elizabethtown location on Thursday. Safety is our top priority, and we are working with the authorities to better understand what led to this situation,” Denny’s said in a statement provided to CNN.

    “Our thoughts are with all of those involved,” the statement said.

    All three people inside the vehicle had to be extracted – two adult females and one adult male, said Elizabethtown Police Public Information Officer, Chris Denham. Elizabethtown is about 45 miles south of Louisville.

    “I’ve never seen anything like this,” Denham told CNN affiliate WAVE. “It’s certainly very windy out here and I’m certain that did have a factor and was involved in this.”

    There was a wind advisory in effect Thursday afternoon, with gusts peaking from 45 to 55 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

    The woman killed was identified Friday as 72-year-old Lillian Curtis, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said in a media release obtained by CNN.

    The cause of death was listed as “blunt force injuries” when the restaurant sign fell on the vehicle, according to the release.

    In an update Friday afternoon, the Elizabethtown Police Department told CNN that Curtis was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle at the time. The vehicle was not Curtis’ and the other two passengers in the car were her daughter and husband, police said.

    The 72-year-old woman was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition and later died, according to police.

    The two other adults were transported to Baptist Health Hardin with non-life-threatening injuries, Denham said.

    The investigation is ongoing, Denham said.
