    DeKALB – Jessica Beatrice said she was excited to learn that Excelleaf was planning to have a soft opening Friday.

    So much so, that the DeKalb resident stood first in line waiting for staff at the marijuana dispensary to open its doors.

    “Up until now, I had to drive up to North Aurora, which is like 45 minutes away,” Beatrice said. “It’s like five minutes now.”

    Excelleaf, 305 E. Locust Street, has a grand opening planned for Dec. 1 at 9 a.m. It will feature food trucks, a live DJ, specials and discounts.

    “We’re excited to be here, to be the first dispensary in DeKalb and for this to be our first store,” said Nakia McAdoo, a founding partner for Canndid Spirit Too, LLC, the company that operates Excelleaf. “It means a lot to us. That’s always going to hold a special place for us to be our first store where this all started in DeKalb.”

    Once its space is fully built out, Excelleaf intends to host workshops and vendors on site, in addition to being active in the community offering instruction and education on how to use marijuana products.

    Excelleaf is occupying a building in the city’s downtown that once was used for a credit union.

    DeKALB – NuEra Cannabis, the second of two marijuana dispensaries slated for DeKalb, is entering a new era in its hopes of setting up shop in town in early 2024.

    On Monday, project leaders joined city staff for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of work that will commence on the building at 818 W. Lincoln Highway. DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas and city planner Dan Olson were present.

    The 4,834 square-feet space, now vacant, used to be home to the former Book World in The Junction Shopping Center.

    Plans for the soon-to-be marijuana dispensary have been a long time in the making, officials said.

    “We are absolutely delighted,” NuEra Cannabis chief operating officer Laura Jaramillo Bernal said. “We really thought that we would’ve been up and running years ago, but the cannabis licensing process has been much slower than everybody expected. Also, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed everything a lot more than everyone expected. So, it’s taken everything a little while, but both the city and our landlord have been incredibly supportive and incredibly patient. We are so excited to finally be breaking ground today and hopefully opening up our doors to the public in quarter one next year.”

    NuEra Cannabis already has other dispensaries in Illinois, including in Aurora, East Peoria, Chicago Champaign, Urbana and Pekin, according to its website.

    Bond denied for DeKalb man accused of fatally shooting man 13 times over alleged marijuana deal – Shaw Local – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    DeKALB – A DeKalb man was denied bond Friday by a DeKalb County judge as he faces murder charges in the shooting death of 33-year-old Carl Austin, who prosecutors allege Romel A. Hollingsworth Jr. shot 13 times after a marijuana deal went bad.

    The shooting occurred midday March 19 near the entrance of a University Village apartment building in the 800 block of Normal Road, DeKalb, records show.

    Hollingsworth, 20, of the 800 block of Russell Road in DeKalb, was charged with first-degree murder in Austin’s death, according to DeKalb County court records. Records allege that the shooting came after a drug deal between the two involving marijuana about 1:30 p.m. March 19.

    Prosecutors allege that Hollingsworth fired about two dozen rounds during the shooting. Austin died from multiple gunshot wounds, including 13 gunshot wounds he suffered during the incident causing 20 bullet holes in his body, court records show.

    “[The] defendant also admitted that he probably emptied his clip before the victim even hit the ground,” prosecutors wrote in court documents presented Friday.

    Austin suffered wounds to his heart, lungs, head and colon, and had internal hemorrhaging, prosecutors said.

    If convicted, Hollingsworth could face a life sentence in jail.

    Hollingsworth’s initial defense attorney, Chip Criswell of the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office, was dismissed from the case Thursday. Hollingsworth appeared in five hearings this week as court proceedings were shuffled around…
