When is it time to take down holiday decorations? DC locals and tourists weigh in. – WTOP News

WTOP polled tourists and locals at the National Christmas Tree at the Ellipse, and other D.C. locations, who gave a range of opinions.

While Christmas was more than a week ago and we are now in a new year, there is a question a lot of us are asking ourselves: Is it time to take down the holiday decorations?

WTOP polled tourists and locals at the National Christmas Tree at the Ellipse, and other D.C. locations, who had a lot to say on the topic.

“That’s a good question. The older I’ve gotten, the longer I’ve sometimes left them up,” Lori, from Northern Virginia, said. “I used to be a lot more rigid when I was younger.”

Lori said she was disappointed the National Christmas Tree is no longer lit at night. The last night for the tree was on Jan. 1.

While normally, Lori said her family takes down their decorations after the Epiphany on Jan. 6, her husband, Rich, said he follows the golden marriage rule when it comes to decorations.

“We’ll take them down when Lori says it’s time to take them down,” Rich said, while laughing.

Outside the Willard Hotel, which is still decorated for the holidays, Perla from Ottawa, Canada, who’s taking in the sights, said she is on the same page as Lori.

“A week after New Year’s. It’s a tradition, yeah,” Perla said. “We wait until Jesus’ baptism, which is supposed to be around January 6th.”

Near the White House, Chris from Capitol Hill thinks decoration removal should be a day earlier than Lori and Perla.

“That answer is pretty easy for me, the end of the 12 Days of Christmas,” Chris said. “So, we are liturgically in the Christmas season right now.”

Chris pointed out that the first day of Christmas is on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

“Traditionally, people would set up decorations on Christmas Eve and then keep them up for the 12 days,” he said.

It seems like Chris was a tad early with the tradition this year, because his family put up their Christmas tree on Thanksgiving weekend.

Not far away from Chris and his family was Jamella and Anthony.

While Jamella admitted that she doesn’t enjoy taking down decorations and has been known to keep hers up until spring, Anthony, who is visiting from Brooklyn, said he knows the best time to take them down.

“When the tree is on the curb,” he said.

‘Giving Garland’: Mother and son donate hand-me-down holiday decorations

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania —

Whether it’s an ornament at the bottom of the box, or a nutcracker collecting dust in the attic, hand-me-down decorations can find a new home thanks to one local high school student and his mom.

Grant Benedum and his mom, Christine, created a mission called, ‘Giving Garland,’ earlier this year.

They have partnered with Norwood-Fontbonne Academy and Our Mother of Consolation Catholic Church in Chestnut Hill to collect decorations from students, parishioners, and their families.

The result has been a roaring success so far. And they were already able to make a donation to ‘Women Against Abuse’ for a shelter in Philadelphia.

The family, who is from Glenside, will continue to accept donations through the end of January 2026.

In West Philly, there’s a ‘Fright Registry’ for homes that decorated for Halloween

For Dyresha Harris, seeing her West Philly neighborhood in a new light has always been one of her favorite parts of Halloween.

“I remember that being really magical for me when I was younger,” she said. “Having these streets that were so familiar to me suddenly transformed was sort of this sense of wonder, and it was a lot of fun. So I often say that one of my favorite parts of being a grown up is being the person to provide that.”

Every year, Harris and her partner put a different display out front of their Garden Court home — from a 20-foot robot to a “Stranger Things” reenactment to an underwater cave. Still, she felt that there were some homes on side streets that weren’t getting the attention they deserved.

To help neighbors, she created the West Philly Fright Registry, a list and map of places celebrating Halloween. The registry includes houses and businesses from 45th to 60th streets and Market Street to Baltimore Avenue that have elaborate decorations, will be handing out candy or hosting spooky events like haunted houses. Locals can sign up in a Google form with their address and information about their setup — some neighbors have even gone as far as to name their homes, like the Witch of Walnut and the Larchwood (Jack-o) Lantern Lair.

The list includes over 90 locations so far, including neighborhood staples that have been decorating for years. Some homes have more traditional decorations, while one owner made fake cages out of laundry hampers, Harris said.

“People often put a lot of effort into making that magic happen and I think it feels good to to be recognized and to have someone say, ‘Yeah, that’s really cool that you are providing that service for your community’ and getting to shout out all of the care and creativity that’s going on in the neighborhood,” Harris said.

The Fright Registry also includes the Yamatorium and the Urban Art Gallery, two art spaces that will be open the night of Halloween.

For Harris, decorating for Halloween can be a labor of love for many in the community, so she hopes the list will offer the chance for neighbors to share their hard work. But she also thinks it’s a holiday about community and sharing joy in a creative way, no matter what’s going on in the world.

“It’s just this magical time where you get to imagine what could be possible, who you could be if there were literally no limits and just explore some other part of yourself,” Harris said. “I think that’s a really important thing in this moment, that we hold on to our imagination, and that when we look around at the world, we don’t just stop there, we think ‘What else could be possible? How could this be different? How could we shift what’s around us?’ I feel like Halloween really does that.”

Drought impacts Halloween pumpkins and Christmas trees in Alabama and leaf peeping in other states

Parts of Alabama are experiencing extreme drought conditions right now. The Forestry Commission has put the entire state under a fire danger advisory. The lack of rain is impacting many crops, which could affect our fall and winter holidays — including pumpkins and Christmas trees.And Alabama isn’t alone, as some states and regions from New England to the Rocky Mountains, which count on tourism dollars from leaf-peeping season, seeing, in some cases, leaves change colors earlier, muted colors, and fewer leaves to peep.According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, more than 40% of the country was considered to be in a drought in early October, the Associated Press reports.That’s more than twice the average, Brad Rippey, a U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist, told the AP.Rippey, an author of the drought monitor — which is a partnership between the federal government and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln — told the AP that drought has hit the Northeast and Western U.S. especially hard. Hacks To Keep Your Christmas Tree Fresh

Christmas trees are a cherished symbol of the holiday season, and the displaying of the real deal instead of a plastic tree is on the rise in North America. According to Statistics Canada, in 2016 over 1,800 farms produced trees for the $77 million dollar market, exporting the evergreens across the world.

The American Christmas Tree Association reports that in 2018 over 95 million homes displayed a tree, with 17.9% of households displaying a real tree. The industry advocacy group has a few pointers on how to keep your Christmas tree fresh and thriving throughout the holiday season.

Water is crucial to keeping a tree green and fresh while displaying it in the home. The NCTA recommends fitting the tree in a traditional stand with a water reservoir that holds at least a quart of water for every inch in tree diameter.

Other tips include making a fresh, half inch cut perpendicular to the axis before setting it in the stand. A fancy V-cut is unnecessary, can make the tree unstable, and actually reduces the tree’s ability to absorb water. Keeping the outer layer of bark intact will also help the tree absorb and retain more water.

Keeping the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters, HVAC vents, and direct sunlight is also a good idea, as is using low heat Christmas lights, and monitoring the water level in the stand, ensuring that the water does not go below the base of the tree.

Other safety tips include never leaving decorative lights turned on when away from home, always inspect light sets before using, do not overload electrical circuits, and promptly remove dry trees from the house.

Lastly, never dispose of a Christmas tree by burning it in a fireplace. The small, dry needles can ignite and burn uncontrollably fast, and send sparks all over the house, quickly setting everything in the domicile on fire. The high sap content can burn hot and long enough to set chimney deposits aflame, starting a flue blaze that can spread rapidly. It’s also unnecessary, as many communities have recycling programs available to households.

Halloween Can Be a Scary Time for People With Dementia. Here’s How to Help

THURSDAY, Oct. 27, 2022 (HealthDay News) — When there are suddenly creepy decorations and lots of knocks at the door from strangers, Halloween can be frightening for someone living with dementia.

It is possible to keep a loved one living with the disease calm and safe, while also including that family member in celebrating the holiday quietly, experts say.

“Like with many other traditions, there are adaptations families can make to help their relatives living with dementia have a safe and enjoyable Halloween,” said Jennifer Reeder, director of educational and social services for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

“We encourage caregivers to follow a few quick and easy steps to keep the ‘Happy’ in ‘Happy Halloween’ on Oct. 31,” Reeder said in a foundation news release.

The foundation’s experts suggest adapting the celebration by reminiscing about past Halloween costumes or activities while looking at old family pictures. Watch a non-threatening program about Halloween.

Give your loved one healthy snacks, such as fruit. Too much candy can increase agitation.

For some, it may be possible to have a loved one with dementia help hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, but never leave the person alone to do so, which could be frightening, confusing and a safety risk, the foundation suggests.

Try playing calming music, engaging in a quiet activity such as reading a book together or providing soothing reassurance.

Minimize distress by avoiding potentially scary decorations, such as fake skeletons, cobwebs, witches and monsters. It’s especially important to avoid exposure to interactive decorations that talk or scream when someone passes by or that have flashing or flickering lights. These can scare and cause someone with dementia to wander away, even from their own home.

Stay safe with the lights on inside and outside the home, so burglars and vandals don’t think the house is empty, the foundation suggests. Another option for candy is to leave a bowl outside the door with a sign that says, “Please take one.”

The AFA Helpline at 866-232-8484 or via the website www.alzfdn.org offers an opportunity to speak with a licensed social worker seven days a week.

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. — A Halloween decoration in Harnett County has come down after sparking controversy within the community and online.

This display, shared hundreds of times on Facebook, shows what appears to be a fully-dressed man with his hands tied behind his back hanging from a tree outside a home in Coats.

Investigators with the Harnett County’s Sheriff Office tell WRAL the family says it was Halloween decoration meant to look like a farmer. Some residents say the display had racist undertones.

“Maybe we did take it the wrong way,” said Jenni Byrd, who lives in Harnett County. “And it did look a certain way that everyone was kind of confused about but i’m glad in the end, that’s not what it was representing.”

Investigators said the family took down the display after realizing the hurt it caused within the community.

They go on to say there aren’t policies banning such displays on private property.

DeAngelo McDougald spotted the controversial Halloween display and it was jarring upon his first glance.

“I just rode past it and it looked so real that I stopped,” McDougald said.

“If you’re passing by and you just glancing over, you’d be like ‘someone’s hanging from a tree.’”

McDougald posted the image to social media, hoping to bring light to the situation. As of tonight, it’s been shared more than 360 times.

Those who saw it in person said this hits close to home for families of color

“My daughter is biracial – she’s Black, white and Indian, and I don’t want her growing up seeing these things,” said Jenni Byrd.

When we drove by the home this evening, the display had been taken down.

Major Aaron Meredith with Harnett County Sheriff’s Office said investigators spoke with homeowners about the controversial display.

“It’s a Hispanic family and they said it was a simply a Halloween decoration they put up and once it was explained to them how it was perceived, they realized that and they were very apologetic and they took it down immediately,” Meredith said.

Harnett County residents who saw the decoration was thankful to see a positive resolution.

“If the intent of it wasn’t what we thought it was, then that’s the best outcome,” Byrd said.
