UPDATE: $30,000 Grant Program Aims to Build High School Students’ College / Career Decision-Making Skills

    [ad_1]

The Alliance for Decision Education will award the grants and support program implementation

    Press Release

    Aug 25, 2022

The Alliance for Decision Education, a national nonprofit spearheading a movement to have decision-making skills taught in K-12 schools, announced the launch of an 18-month grant program aimed at preparing high school students for life after graduation.

The grant – Planning Your Path: A College and Career Decision-Making Incubator – is for high schools that want to bring Decision Education into their classrooms by designing programs that broadly impact the way students make decisions about careers and college.

“This program aims to help students navigate one of the most challenging and important decisions in their young lives: What to do after high school?” said Alliance Director of Education Megan Roberts. “Empowering students with key decision-making skills and processes will help them form better decisions and make them feel more confident in their ability to do so.”

The Alliance, supported by two Nobel Laureates and leaders in nearly every industry, has been working since 2014 to build and coalesce the interdisciplinary field of Decision Education, which draws on concepts from psychology, neuroscience, behavioral economics, and decision sciences.

Through the grant program, each selected school will appoint a team of 3-5 staff members to lead work on their projects, take part in professional development, and receive coaching from an Alliance Education Manager. School teams are expected to learn about Decision Education throughout the grant period, and projects will eventually be shared with a national audience.

The application window opens on August 22 and closes on October 7. Awards will be made in late October.

  • Nobel Laureate Richard Thaler Joins Movement to Have Decision-Making Skills Taught in All U.S. Schools

Nobel Laureate Richard Thaler Joins Movement to Have Decision-Making Skills Taught in All U.S. Schools

    [ad_1]

Globally celebrated author and scholar to serve as advisor to the Alliance for Decision Education

    Press Release

    Feb 3, 2022

The Alliance for Decision Education has added Nobel Prize Winner Richard Thaler to its growing list of distinguished leaders working to have decision-making skills taught to students K-12 in all U.S. schools.

Thaler, the global best-selling author, and an expert on the psychology of decision-making, won the Nobel Prize in 2017 for his breakthrough work that created a bridge between the economic and psychological analyses of individual decision-making.

His highly acclaimed book, Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth and Happiness, which he co-authored with Harvard University Professor Cass Sunstein, demonstrated that by applying insights from behavioral sciences, organizations can guide – or nudge – human behavior in areas such as public policy, finance, and health. It has transformed how many industries, companies, organizations, and governments apply behavioral science to influence improved outcomes and has been called one of the most influential academic books of the 21st Century.

“Children begin making meaningful decisions early in their lives. There can be no more important skill than making sound choices, and no topic more deserving of attention in schools. We can and must help,” Thaler said.

The Alliance for Decision Education, founded in 2014, has accelerated its work to have Decision Education added to school curriculums, citing mounting evidence that students are struggling in today’s fast-paced, constant flow of electronic information and also are increasingly ill prepared for a world that is demanding skills in problem-solving, analytical thinking, probabilistic thinking, and reasoning.

“By teaching our children the critical skills of decision-making, we can prepare them for the opportunities and challenges they are facing today and will encounter tomorrow. We know that better decisions lead to better lives. We also know that poorly made decisions can carry lifelong consequences,” said Alliance Executive Director Joseph E. Sweeney, Ed.D.

Thaler, who will serve on the Alliance Advisory Council, is the second Nobel Laureate among more than two dozen global business, science, education, and sports leaders to join the Alliance, helping to propel its mission into reality.

The list of supporters committed to the Alliance mission includes:

    • Daniel KahnemanNobel Prize Winner, author of Thinking, Fast and Slow, and the world’s authority on decision science
    • Jan E. Tighe, retired Navy Vice Admiral and former Director of Naval Intelligence
    • John E. Pepper, Jr., former Chairman and CEO of the Procter & Gamble Company and former Chair of The Walt Disney Company
    • Michelle Ton, Head of Sales Decision Science at PayPal, and an expert in quantitative analytics
    • Garry Kasparov, international chess champion and political strategist
    • Barbara Tversky, ground-breaking researcher in cognitive psychology and professor emerita at Stanford University
    • Annie Duke, World Series Poker Champion, best-selling author on decision-making, and a widely celebrated speaker and coach who teaches investors, company executives, and financial leaders the power and process of critical thinking and decision-making
    • Michael Lombardiformer NFL GM, three-time Super Bowl winner, author, speaker, and host of the GM Shuffle podcast
    • Andrew Berry, Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager for the Cleveland Browns, named the most the most analytically advanced franchise in the league

“Having leaders of this caliber join our work speaks to the critical importance of having Decision Education included in our schools. If there is one thing that we can do to help ensure the long-term well-being of our students—and our society—it is to teach our children the skills of good decision-making,” Sweeney said.

Decision Education develops in students the skills and dispositions needed for effective decision-making. It includes seven skill areas that help students, whether working independently or as part of a group, embrace a decision as an opportunity, identify biases, manage the situation they are facing, follow a structured decision process, predict possible outcomes, manage their own habits, and apply proven tools.

Fellows also will be able to connect and collaborate with last year’s Fellows.

    • “This has transformed the way I engage with my students.” – Tiffany White, Math Teacher, Homewood Flossmoor High School, Chicago.
    • “This Fellowship was invaluable. It helped us go beyond just memorizing facts and gets into real issues, deep topics, and fostering discussion and analysis. It was a whole other level of learning that I hadn’t done as much in my classroom prior.” – Joanne Calder, Science Teacher, Beach Grove Elementary, British Columbia.
    • “The students really evolved, they thought more deeply about alternatives and how they need to consider those factors when coming up with a decision.” – Allen Wang, Science Teacher, KIPP Academy, Massachusetts

  • Business Icon John Pepper and Browns GM Andrew Berry Join Alliance for Decision Education Board

Business Icon John Pepper and Browns GM Andrew Berry Join Alliance for Decision Education Board

    [ad_1]

The Alliance for Decision Education, the national non-profit spearheading a movement for decision-making skills to be taught in schools, today announced the addition of two high-profile leaders, to its Board, expanding the organization’s already impressive list of supporters, advisors, and partners.

John E. Pepper, retired President, CEO and Chairman of the Procter & Gamble Company, former Chairman of the Board of the Walt Disney Company, and former Yale University Vice President of Finance and Administration, will serve as Honorary Board Member.

“Business leaders have been applying good decision-making skills for decades with proven results. It’s our obligation to share these skills with students as we know that the ability to make better decisions will positively impact them both in the classroom and out, and throughout the rest of their lives,” Pepper said. “These skills will make them better parents, employees, community members and leaders.”

Andrew Berry, Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager for the Cleveland Browns professional football team, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles, and cum laude graduate of Harvard University, will join as a full member of the Alliance Board. “Today’s students face more, and more varied, challenges than ever before. It is our responsibility to teach them the skills that will enable them to make their own, good decisions and to be successful in the long term, regardless of their background, what they hope to accomplish or what tomorrow may look like,” Berry said.

Pepper and Berry join a list of global experts and leaders lending their names and expertise to elevate the growing call to have schools across the country teach Decision Education – which builds skills rooted in science and proven to enable improved decision-making.

“Our aim is to have Decision Education taught in schools and be available to a broad range of students by 2030,” said Alliance Executive Director Joseph E. Sweeney, Ed.D. “The support of powerful community, industry, and thought leaders will help us raise awareness of how Decision Education can shape lives and the incredible need our students have for these skills.

“Having John Pepper and Andrew Berry, both leaders of tremendous integrity, experience, and passion, join our effort speaks to both the critical importance and growing need for Decision Education to be shared with our students.”

Pepper, has long been a vocal and impactful force in several organizations aimed at helping children, including co-launching the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, a long-running and successful mentorship program in his hometown; serving as founding supporter of Every Child Succeeds, providing low-income pregnant women and new mothers with in-home visits; and co-chairing the ReadyNation’s CEO Task Force on Early Childhood.

Berry, whose appointment at the age of 32 made him the youngest General Manager in the history of the National Football League, infuses analytics, strategy, and the importance of decision-making throughout the Browns organization and is personally committed to advancing education to improve society. In June 2020, Berry started the #BeTheSolution campaign, focusing on education as he encouraged staff, fans, players, and the media to implement actions aimed at ending social and racial injustice.

The Alliance is also supported by: Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman; World Chess Champion, author, and expert on strategy and decision-making, Garry Kasparov; Professor of psychology at Stanford and Columbia and leader in driving breakthroughs on cognitive psychology, Barbara Tversky; global financial strategist, Columbia Business School professor, author, and expert at predictive analyses, Michael Mauboussin; founder of Decision Research, former head of Society of Risk Analysis, and psychology professor Paul Slovic; Yale Professor of Child Psychiatry, Psychology and Pediatrics, repeatedly named “Best Doctor in America,” Jim Leckman, M.D.; award-winning psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, University of CA, Berkeley, and the Ohio State University, Barbara Mellers; leading financial advisor, investor, author, and host of the acclaimed Capital Allocators podcast, Ted Seides; professor, author, and probability expert focused on psychology, poli-sci, and organization behavior, Phil Tetlock; among others.

The Alliance was founded in 2014 by best-selling author, decision strategist, coach, speaker, and World Poker Champion, Annie Duke and international financial strategist Eric Brooks, who co-founded the Susquehanna International Group, LLP,  on decision science principles.

The Alliance initially focused on curriculum development, creating award-winning and widely acclaimed programs that continue to be downloaded by thousands of teachers every year. Adoption of that curriculum showed clear and positive impact. When just one aspect of Decision Education was taught in a local Philadelphia school, teachers saw their students perform 10% better in Math and 13% better in English than students in other classes.

Today, the Alliance is accelerating its efforts, aiming to reach millions of students by raising awareness of the benefits of Decision Education and driving increased demand for its implementation in schools.
