O.J. Simpson’s final days included saying goodbye to his loved ones before dying at home as he planned, according to his attorney Malcolm LaVergne.

And one of his last wishes was to have more time to spend with them, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“The only thing I heard him [say] at the end, he just wanted a couple more years,” LaVergne exclusively recalled to Us Weekly on Tuesday, April 16. “He wanted to see his oldest grandchild go to school. That would’ve been icing on the cake for him. But he never got there. But he had everything else.

“The thing that made O.J. the happiest at the end was that he was a grandfather and he got to see, spend time and play with his grandkids.”

O.J. Simpson originally rose to fame as a football standout. After winning the 1968 Heisman Trophy at the University of Southern California, he was selected by the Buffalo Bills as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1969 draft. Simpson retired from the NFL in 1979 after playing 11 seasons, pivoting his career to take […]

But at 76, those years he longed for were cut short.

“On April 5, the doctor said, ‘He’s not long for this world. It is finite,’” added LaVergne, about the end of Simpson’s life. “People started flying in from all over, friends, families.”

The lawyer, who’s also the executor of Simpson’s estate, remembered people from Florida, Colorado and Canada coming to “pay their final respects” before Simpson died on April 10 at the age of 76.

Ahead of his passing, Simpson was battling prostate cancer, but LaVergne told Us that he was only “quite ill” toward “the end” of his life. He “thought he had beaten it,” LaVergne said, noting that the illness returned and was ultimately responsible for the former NFL star’s death.

In the end, Simpson’s age played a factor in his inability to bounce back from other sicknesses. “He’s an older man, so treatments for cancer make you get sick in other ways,” the attorney explained. “He got pneumonia and then he couldn’t do the experimental or trial stuff.”

LaVergne told Us that Simpson eventually reached the point where he said, “I’m not going to die in a hospital. I don’t know what’s going on here, but I’ll take my chances at home.” That’s when his  attorney recalled his client entering “into a hospice plan and went home.”

Prior to his sudden downturn in early April, LaVergne said Simpson’s spirits were relatively high.

The attorney recalled his last “functional conversation” with Simpson, telling Us it took place before he left for England over Easter weekend in late March.

RICK MEYER/AFP via Getty Images It was the trial that captivated a nation. After O.J. Simpson — who died of prostate cancer on Wednesday, April 10 — was arrested and charged with the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman in June 1994, Simpson’s subsequent trial played out on camera for […]

LaVergne said Simpson was “sitting on his couch drinking his beer, eating good,” adding that the disgraced athlete “didn’t seem like a man who was going to die to me soon.”

“He was just chilling on his couch watching TV,” LaVergne remembered of their March conversation, revealing he and Simpson chatted about “various topics.”

Once LaVergne returned to the U.S. after the Easter holiday, Simpson’s health had declined. “I went and saw him that Friday myself, and he could barely get any words out of his mouth. He could ask for water,” he said. “He could decide between whether he wanted to watch women’s tennis or golf. But he was just in bed. He was just resting comfortably.”

Simpson’s family confirmed via X on Thursday, April 11, that he’d died after a lengthy cancer battle. The news brought back to life Simpson’s controversial past, which includes the 1994 murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Simpson was accused of fatally stabbing Brown Simpson, who was 35 at the time, and Goldman, who was 25. While Simpson was arrested for the murders, he was acquitted of the charges in 1995 following an explosive and historic trial.

The former football star was later found guilty of wrongful death and battery against Goldman in a civil suit.

Simpson was later arrested in 2007 on charges of kidnapping and armed robbery. He was found guilty and sentenced to serve nine to 33 years in prison. Simpson was released on parole in December 2021 after serving the minimum sentence.

The late O.J. Simpson was father of five children, whom he shared with his two former spouses. The former athlete tied the knot with his first wife, Marguerite Whitley, in 1967. He is survived by kids Arnelle, Jason and Aaren, whom he shared with first wife Marguerite Whitley. Simpson also shared daughter Sydney and son Justin with late ex-wife Brown Simpson.

“The family’s always been private. The kids have always been private,” LaVergne told Us on Tuesday, adding that Simpson will be cremated and his family is planning a memorial. “They’ve stayed private, and their feelings and mixed bag of emotions are really the exact same as anyone else who loses a loved one to a long-term illness.”

He added: “They’re just grieving for their father. Of course, they have the added burden of knowing his fame.

“And I think it’s a time for them that at some point they just want to have O.J., their father, to themselves.”

Heartbreak Rev Richard Coles has faced in recent years – from losing husband to devastating family death

    [ad_1]

Former Strictly star Rev Richard Coles – who is on Celebrity Bake Off tonight (Sunday, April 14) – has faced a lot of heartbreak in recent years.

From losing his husband to suffering a devastating family death, here’s an inside look at the 62-year-old’s difficult few years…

    Richard’s husband died in 2019 (Credit: SplashNews.com)

Rev Richard Coles – death of his husband

Back in 2019, Richard was left devastated when his husband, David, suddenly passed away.

Richard and David – a fellow priest – entered a civil partnership back in 2010. They had been dating since 2007.

They lived together in the village of Finedon, Northamptonshire, and both served as Church of England vicars.

However, David struggled with alcoholism, which eventually led to his death in 2019.

“Anyone who has loved an addict and lived with an addict will know how tough it is,” he told BBC Radio Northampton in 2021.

He then said that he believed David was “probably” already an alcoholic when they met in 2007. He said that David “always had an enthusiastic fondness for alcohol”.

“An enthusiastic fondness for alcohol when you’re 20 or 25 is one thing, when you’re 35 or 40 it’s another thing and his drinking just got out of control,” he then said.

Richard then went on to say that his husband used alcohol as an “anesthetic” when life was difficult. However, the situation worsened as time passed.

“People used to talk about the ‘demon drink’ which sounds like a rather melodramatic way to describe it, but it is like someone is seized by a demon and when David was at his worst he was really difficult and it was very tough,” Richard said.

He then said that David was “deeply ashamed” of his alcoholism.

However, when David died, Richard joined Alcoholics Anonymous. “I just sat with people who were going through the same thing I was going through and that made a huge difference,” he said.

Richard turned to writing following David’s death

In an interview with The Guardian 2021, Richard revealed that while David was dying, he was still posing for selfies with fans in the hospital. He confessed that he was “all over the place” at the time.

As soon as David died, Richard began writing to cope. His writing eventually became his book, The Madness of Grief.

“Writing out of the chaos, a little like a war correspondent – that’s how I felt, like I was standing on a street corner and there were bombs going off and I was writing down what was happening. It was a way of trying to endure it. Because something like this is almost unendurable. And you do what you have to do,” he said.

Elsewhere in the interview, he confessed he wished he’d spent more time with David.

‘I wish I’d spent more time with David’

“I realised, suddenly, that in trying to fill my life with as much incident and interest as I could I had neglected important things of home and hearth. I wish I’d spent more time with David. I wish I’d prioritised doing nothing with David more. Not seeing that as a holiday from things, but as the centre of thing,” he said.

He also opened up about dealing with David’s addiction.

“When David was at his worst it was so gruelling, so difficult for me as his husband, I felt like I was falling through space sometimes. And what I discovered, once he died, was how much I wanted to express what it had been like for me,” he said.

Richard also confessed that he sits by David’s grave and speaks to him.

Rev Richard Coles on death of his mother

Earlier this year, Richard was dealt another devastating blow when his mum died.

He took to Twitter to announce the news in February. He shared a snap of his mum on her wedding day.

“Mum died last night. Here she is on her wedding day, laughing,” he wrote.

“No mummy’s boy (hello) could have wished for more. RIP,” he then added.

The former Strictly star was inundated with support from fans and followers. “Sorry to hear this Richard. May her memory be a blessing,” David Baddiel wrote.

“I’m so sorry for your loss Richard,” another follower said.

What Kate Garraway has said about grieving for husband Derek amid ‘concern from friends’

    [ad_1]

Kate Garraway lost her husband Derek Draper in January, following his long battle with Covid and its after-effects.

Tonight (March 26), Kate returns to our screens with a new documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.

However, friends of the TV star are reportedly concerned for Kate’s unrelenting work ethic as she navigates grieving her partner. Read on for everything Kate has said about grieving her beloved husband Derek.

Kate Garraway on grieving her husband Derek Draper

A source recently told Bella Magazine about Kate’s friends’ concern. They claimed: “Kate has sworn that juggling both Good Morning Britain and her radio show has been a lifeline, offering a glimmer of hope and distraction as she continues to deal with the unimaginable grief of losing your partner.

Some of her friends are concerned that she needs to take a break.

“However, some of her friends are concerned that she needs to take a break.”

Kate initially announced Derek’s death on Instagram, in a heartwrenching tribute. She said: “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.

“As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

“Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.

“I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.

“Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”

Kate Garraway sends message to GMB viewers after death of husband Derek

Kate shared a heartfelt message with GMB viewers shortly after the loss of Derek, which Susanna Reid relayed on her behalf. She said that grief was “isolating”.

The host thanked her fans for their support, stating: “They are an extraordinary comfort and I am so lucky to feel connected to you all through these messages at this time when the raw pain of grief can be so isolating.”

She went on to gush: “I am certain that it is the support that you have given me and sent to Derek that has sustained us through these tough nearly four years, motivating us to fight on for each other, and for those that can’t fight for themselves, and it will sustain us to continue that fight in the weeks and months and years to come.

“I look forward to waking up with you very soon again on Good Morning Britain to celebrate life in all its wonder and challenge again.”

Kate on being in ‘bubble of grief’

Ben Shephard appeared on GMB just days after Derek’s death and as a close friend of Kate, relayed his most recent discussion with her, where Kate touched on suffering through grief.

He explained: “It is the first time I have been on since sadly we heard of Derek’s passing last Friday. I just thought it would be alright to, firstly, on Kate’s behalf, I spoke to Kate last night.

“She again reiterated what she said on Monday which is a huge, huge thank you to everybody who sent her and her family a message.”

She said she is sort of in a strange bubble of her own numbness of grief at the moment.

Ben continued: “She said she is sort of in a strange bubble of her own numbness of grief at the moment. Her, Billy, and Darcey are hunkering down together.”

The presenter went on: “They are in the next stages of working out what happens. There’s a lot of admin to do when you lose someone. In that brilliant way yesterday, she said: ‘I have to go out to go and register the death.’”

Kate Garraway on caring for husband Derek

Just days after laying Derek Draper to rest, Kate opened up about her struggles as a carer for her husband.

Chatting on GMB, she said: “I think for people watching, they will know two things that are in a caring position – how unbelievably hard it is but what an honour it is too.

“And how much I wish I was caring today because it’s you know, it’s an incredible thing to be that line of defence against the world and what happens to us all in life.

I know I didn’t get it all right and I have lots of regrets of things I should have done more of.

“To be able to be that person there for somebody, it’s the ultimate honour and privilege, isn’t it? I know I didn’t get it all right and I have lots of regrets of things I should have done more of and wished I had spent less time fretting about.

“But it is a huge honour and what you do will be something that builds your life forever, it’s a gift but also you get so much for it as well.”

    Derek Draper funeral

In an interview last week, ahead of the airing of Kate’s new documentary about husband Derek, Kate opened up about how she felt after the funeral.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Kate said: “I knew that what was said in the church would stay in the church, and wasn’t going to be broadcast or written up. I just trusted people not to do that.

“But the day felt like an out-of-body experience, like it wasn’t quite real. I got home from the funeral and thought, ‘I can’t wait to tell Derek about this’. And that’s the maddest thing.”

She added: “Of course I am glad he is at peace, but he never said, ‘I can’t do this any more.’ He always said, ‘How am I going to get better?’ So I knew that he would fundamentally be sad to have lost the fight. I’m just trying to take things really slowly, and sleep.”

    Derek Draper death

Derek Draper died in January following a near four-year battle with the effects of Covid-19.

Kate’s documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, will be the third documentary about Derek, following on from Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.

Following the death of Jonnie Irwin last week, the BBC has announced it will air an Escape to the Country special in tribute to the presenter later on today (February 5).

In a statement just released, and in a change to the scheduled programme, the BBC said it will air “a special tribute to Jonnie Irwin at 3pm today on BBC One with an Escape to the Country special”.

Escape to the Country special today

Posting on Instagram, the official Escape to the Country account shared two beautiful pictures of Jonnie and said: “In a change to the BBC schedule today, this afternoon’s transmission of Escape to the Country is the last programme Jonnie recorded with us and will include a tribute to him at the end.”

I will be watching with a tissue in hand.

“I will be watching with a tissue in hand,” said one fan of the show. Another added: “That’s lovely, will be watching. Rest in peace, Jonnie.” A third commented: “Such a lovely gesture. Will miss Jonnie.”

    BBC tribute to ‘extraordinary man’

The news comes after a statement from the BBC on Friday in which the broadcaster shared its sadness over Jonnie’s death at the age of 50.

In a statement, Rob Unsworth, Head of BBC Daytime and Early Peak Commissioning, said: “Jonnie Irwin was an extraordinary man and wonderful presenter. He brought such warmth and fun to Escape to the Country, where he was a firm favourite with not just viewers, but the production team too.

“More recently, he did some truly inspirational reports for Morning Live about his illness, tackling taboos around end-of-life care, and wonderfully demonstrating the limitless positivity that he brought to everything he did.

“His kindness will be hugely missed by everyone he worked with, and we are sending all of our thoughts to his family and friends at this sad time,” he then concluded.

Jonnie joined the show back in 2010.

Jonnie Irwin previously revealed how he planned to spend his final days before his death aged 50

    [ad_1]

Jonnie Irwin previously shared an absolutely crushing update about how he would spend his final days after revealing his death could happen “at any time”.

The former A Place In The Sun presenter was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer that had spread to his brain in August 2020. Jonnie’s death was announced on Friday February 2 in a statement released by his family.

Last year he had spent time in a hospice to deal with chronic pain in his back, an illness that has zapped his energy, leaving Jonnie tired.

The presenter shares three sons – Rex, five, and twins Rafa and Cormac, three – with his wife Jessica. And he was determined to share as many “good times” with his young family as he can.

Jonnie Irwin shares ‘cruel’ health update

Speaking to Hello! in June 2023 Jonnie shared a crushing update on his health. He had travelled to Turkey for treatment, which did shrink a lot of his tumours. However, in what Jonnie described as a “cruel blow”, it damaged his liver. And it couldn’t be repaired.

He said: “It’s blocked in a place they can’t operate on, so there’s no point fighting the cancer elsewhere if the liver’s not working. It’’ a cruel blow.”

And apparently, I’ll go peacefully when I do go. I’ll just require more and more sleep.

Speaking about his death, Jonnie added: “It can happen at any time. I’m here to stop it for as long as possible.”

The star said that he did experience “pain” due to the cancer, and he removed himself from the family because he’s “not good to be around when I’m in pain”. He added that he didn’t want his boys to “see me like that”.

Where Jonnie will spend his final days

Jonnie admitted that he wanted to spend his final days at the family home in Hertfordshire. However, two years ago, they moved to Newcastle so they could be closer to Jessica’s family, explaining he doesn’t want her to be “on her own”.

Jonnie also revealed that he had come to terms with the fact that he was then too sick to work. But he was conscious that he didn’t want to spend his last days working. Instead, he wanted to be at home when he died – and he was told that it would be “peaceful”.

“I don’t want to spend the last days working when I could be with my family,” he said. “I really want to be at home and Jess is fine with that. And apparently, I’ll go peacefully when I do go. I’ll just require more and more sleep,” he said.

The presenter’s death was announced yesterday by his family. Posting a picture of Jonnie and his wife on the star’s Instagram, a statement read: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Jonnie’s passing. A truly remarkable soul, he fought bravely against cancer with unwavering strength and courage. Jonnie touched the lives of so many with his kindness, warmth, and infectious spirit.

“At this time, we kindly ask for the privacy of Jonnie’s family as they navigate through this profound loss. Their grief is immeasurable, and your thoughts, prayers, and support are deeply appreciated.

“As we remember the beautiful moments shared with Jonnie, let us celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will forever be etched in our hearts. Jonnie may be gone from our sight, but his love, laughter, and memories will live on.

“Rest in peace, dear Jonnie. You will be dearly missed, but never forgotten,” it then concluded.

Prior to his death, Angus Cloud made waves in Hollywood following his breakout role as Fezco on the hit series Euphoria.

After the 2019 premiere of the HBO drama, Cloud went on to star in the movies North Hollywood and The Line and wrapped filming on several other projects. He also brought his acting chops to music videos for Juice WRLD, Becky G and Karol G.

Cloud died in July 2023 at age 25. Us Weekly confirmed in September that Cloud’s cause of death was acute intoxication following an accidental overdose.

“It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today. As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways,” the star’s family said in a statement at the time.

    ‘Freaky Tales’

Cloud will appear in the upcoming drama starring Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jack Champion, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne and Keir Gilchrist. Co-directed by Captain Marvel’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the movie will center around “four interconnected stories set in Oakland, California” and “will tell about the love of music, movies, people, places and memories beyond our knowable universe,” according to the film’s IMDb page.

    ‘Abigail’

The horror comedy stars Cloud, Kathryn Newton, Dan Stevens, Melissa Barrera, Kevin Durand, William Catlett and Giancarlo Esposito as a group of criminals who kidnap a young girl named Abigail (Alisha Weir) in order to collect a $50 million ransom. Upon discovering Abigail is actually a vampire, the group must work together to survive the night. The film, which hit theaters in April 2024, is helmed by Scream VI codirectors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

    ‘Euphoria’

Though Euphoria season 3 was delayed until 2025 due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, Cloud was seemingly expected to return as Fezco for the series’ third installment. His character ended season 2 on a dire note, as Fezco’s adoptive younger brother, Ashtray (Javon Walton), was killed after he fought back against a SWAT team that infiltrated their house. Throughout the season, Fezco also developed a sweet romance with Maude Apatow’s Lexi Howard, though his brother’s death caused him to miss the premiere of her school play.

No details about how the series will handle Cloud’s death or Fezco’s fate have been revealed.

Sinead O’Connor’s Official Cause of Death Revealed

    [ad_1]

Sinéad O’Connor’s official cause of death has been revealed.

The Southwark Coroners Court confirmed on Tuesday, January 9, that O’Connor died of natural causes, noting in a statement, “The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death.”

The Irish Times confirmed that the singer died on July 26, 2023, at the age of 56.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” O’Connor’s family wrote in a statement to RTE at the time.

O’Connor was best known for her rendition of Prince’s hit song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which earned her nominations for Record of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Short Form at the 1990 Grammys.

The musician experienced her fair share of ups and downs throughout her singing career. When she performed her now-famous rendition of Bob Marley’s “War” on Saturday Night Live in 1992 as an act of protest against the Catholic Church, she held up a picture of Pope John Paul II and tore the image to pieces, which led to a permanent ban from the show. Despite public criticism, O’Connor has since been praised by some for speaking out on important issues despite backlash.

Shortly before her death, O’Connor announced that she had moved back to London and was working on a new album that she planned to release in 2024.

Following her passing, many celebrities paid tribute to O’Connor in several different ways.

Pink and Brandi Carlile honored the late singer by performing “Nothing Compares 2 U” together during Pink’s concert in Ohio in July. “When I was a little girl … I used to go down to the Ocean City boardwalk with my 10 dollars and I would make a demo tape,” Pink told the audience at the time. “And it would always be either ‘Greatest Love of All’ by Whitney Houston or ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinéad O’Connor.”

Russell Crowe, for his part, recalled running into O’Connor while at a pub in Ireland.

“There under streetlights with mist on my breath, I met Sinéad. She looked in my eyes, and uttered with disarming softness,‘Oh, it’s you Russell.’ She came with us back to the table and sat in the cold and ordered a hot tea,” Crowe wrote in a lengthy Twitter thread one day after her death. “In a conversation without fences we roamed through the recent Dublin heatwave, local politics, American politics, the ongoing fight for indigenous recognition in many places, but particularly in Australia, her warm memory of New Zealand, faith, music, movies and her brother the writer. I had the opportunity to tell her she was a hero of mine.”

Singer and songwriter Bob Geldof later told fans that he had been in touch with O’Connor shortly before her death, sharing that she was experiencing a wide range of emotions in her final days.

“She was a very good friend of mine,” he told the audience at the Cavan Calling Festival in Cavan, Ireland, in July 2023. “Some of the texts [she sent] were laden with desperation and despair and sorrow and some were ecstatically happy. She was like that.”

Nearly a year prior to her passing, O’Connor lost her son, Shane, to suicide at the age of 17. “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God,” she tweeted at the time. “May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. The roommate told the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office that she returned home from a holiday and knocked on Morgan’s bedroom door. She didn’t hear a response, but she smelled a strong odor from inside and called 911. The authorities entered Morgan’s room and found her body.

Morgan was last seen alive by her roommate on December 19.

The authorities told TMZ that they believe Morgan died of “natural causes” and found no evidence of foul play. An investigation is still ongoing.

Prior to her death, Morgan was best known for her first film role as Lacey Underall in the 1980 comedy Caddyshack opposite Chevy Chase and Bill Murray. Her character was the country club owner’s niece, who catches the attention of many men at the venue. She also starred in the sci-fi classic Tron, which hit theaters in 1982. Though she stopped acting onscreen in the early 2000s, Morgan was a regular at fan conventions and enjoyed talking about her past work.

“Sweet photo from the set of #Caddyshack,” Morgan captioned a still from the set of the film via Instagram in June 2023. “Bill Murray’s calmly advising me, and I look as nervous as I should be, playing #LaceyUnderall against four of the funniest men on the planet.”

She added, “What was Bill like? A sweet, big brother who kept me out of trouble… mostly. 😉.”

In a November post, she revealed that she had two Falcon Crest roles after not telling producers she’d had a smaller part a few seasons prior.

“One of the other actresses thought I looked a little too much like her, so she had me rinse my hair auburn,” Morgan recalled. “The producers asked me when my new hair color would be permanent. I told them as soon as my contract was permanent.”

She added, “16 episodes total, two characters. I also ‘forgot’ to tell the producers that I had been on the show before as Lorenzo Lamas’ is love interest. One of the crew recognized me though. Interesting doing a nighttime soap. An emotional roller coaster, and I slapped a lot of people. Kissed a lot of others.”

Laura rose to fame as one of the founding members of The Dixie Chicks, which shortened its name in 2020, alongside Robin Lynn Macy, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer. The foursome founded their bluegrass-country band in 1989, with Laura playing upright bass and performing as lead vocalist. Siblings Maguire, now 54, and Strayer, now 51, replaced Laura as lead singer with Natalie Maines. (Natalie is the daughter of The Chicks’ original guitarist, Lloyd Maines.)

“We knew we were taking a big risk changing lead singers,” Strayer told D Magazine in February 1996. “We could end up losing it all. ”

Matthew Perry wrote about receiving ketamine treatments to “to ease pain and help with depression,” nearly one year before his death.

“Ketamine was a very popular street drug in the 1980s. There is a synthetic form of it now,” the late actor penned in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. “Has my name written all over it — they might as well have called it ‘Matty.’”

Perry referred to the drug as a “giant exhale,” revealing that he would “disassociate” while receiving treatment.

Perry died on October 28 at age 54 from “the acute effects of ketamine,” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s toxicology report, which was released on Friday, December 15.

In his book, Perry also noted that he felt like he was “dying” when going through the ketamine treatments, but explained why he would “continually sign up for this s–t.”

“It was something different, and anything different is good,” Perry wrote. “Taking K is like being hit in the head with a giant happy shovel. But the hangover was rough and outweighed the shovel.”

Overall, the Friends alum declared: “Ketamine was not for me.”

Friday’s report also listed drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine — a drug used to treat opioid use — as contributing factors in his passing. Perry’s death was ultimately ruled an accident.

Perry was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home on October 28, after authorities were called to the scene, responding to a call for a cardiac arrest. Following the initial autopsy report, Perry’s cause of death was “deferred,” per a report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner on October 30. Further investigation into his passing was requested, along with a toxicology report.

Perry rose to fame playing Chandler Bing on Friends from 1994 to 2004. During his tenure on the famed NBC comedy, the actor struggled with substance abuse, something he wrote about in his memoir at length, revealing that he was “completely sober” for only one season of the show. The late star often referred to season 9 as “the one where everyone was talking about Chandler,” because of this.

Prior to his sudden passing, Perry said that he wanted to be remembered as someone who “wants to help people,” despite his struggles.

“The best thing about me, bar none, is that if an alcoholic or drug addict comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me?’ I can say yes and follow up and do it,” he said during a November 2022 appearance on the “Q with Tom Power” podcast. “When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first thing that’s mentioned. While he was known for making people laugh, Perry struggled with his mental health and addictions to drugs and alcohol behind the scenes.

During Friends: The Reunion, which premiered in April 2021 on Max, Perry recalled how anxious he felt while filming. “I felt like I was gonna die if they didn’t laugh. It’s not healthy for sure, but I would sometimes say a line and they wouldn’t laugh, and I would sweat and go into convulsions,” Perry said. “If I didn’t get the laugh I was supposed to get, I would freak out. He remained close with his Friends costars — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer — who said in a joint statement that they “were utterly devastated by the loss” of their pal.  “We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” the group said to Us Weekly on October 30. “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”

Friends cocreators Marta Kauffman and David Crane and their fellow executive producer Kevin S. Bright said they were “shocked and deeply, deeply saddened” by Perry’s sudden death.

“He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us,” the trio shared in a statement to Us Weekly on October 29. “We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment — not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”

Tatum O’Neal is mourning the loss of her father, Ryan O’Neal, following this death.

“I feel great sorrow with my father’s passing,” Tatum, 60, told People on Friday, December 8, hours after Ryan’s passing was confirmed. “He meant the world to me. I loved him very much and know he loved me too. I’ll miss him forever and I feel very lucky that we ended on such good terms.”

Ryan’s eldest son, Patrick O’Neal, confirmed the actor’s death at age 82 earlier on Friday. “My dad passed away peacefully today with his loving team by his side supporting him and loving him as he would us,” he wrote via Instagram.

“My father Ryan O’Neal has always been my hero. I looked up to him and he was always bigger than life,” Patrick continued “When I was born in 1967 my dad was already a TV star on Peyton Place. That’s where he met my mom Leigh Taylor-Young, and about 9 months later (give or take a date night or two) I was born.”

Patrick described his father as a “Hollywood legend. Full stop,” noting that the name Ryan “peaked” after he appeared in the 1970 film Love Story, which “saved Paramount Studios and earned my dad a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

Patrick shared that Ryan was “so skilled at his craft, worked so hard and just loved acting plain and simple,” adding that he was “highly intelligent,” an “avid reader” and a “journal writer.” He concluded his message by saying that his dad lived “a kick-ass life” and “never bragged” but had “bragging rights in Heaven.”

Ryan, who was known for his roles in Paper Moon, Love Story, Peyton Place, The Driver and more, was the father of four children: Tatum and son Griffin O’Neal, whom he welcomed with first wife Joanna Moore in 1963 and 1964, respectively; Patrick, 56, whom he shared with ex-wife Leigh Taylor-Young; and Redmond O’Neal, whom he welcomed with Farrah Fawcett in 1985. (Ryan and Farrah were romantically linked for 30 years until her death in 2009.)

Throughout his life, Ryan made headlines for his ups and downs with his children. He and Griffin, 59, got into infamous altercations in 1983 and 2007, while he was arrested with son Redmond, 38, in 2008 for alleged drug possession. He was also often estranged from Tatum as she faced her own battle with addiction.

“How would I feel if my father were to, say, get sick or die even? Would I be OK? And I realized that I wouldn’t be OK,” Tatum asked during a clip of the pair’s 2011 short-lived reality show, Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals, according to CNN. “So I knew I needed to make an effort, because what is your life without your family? What’s your life without a father?”

The pair eventually reunited in September 2020 along with her three children — Kevin, 37, Sean, 36, and Emily, 32 — whom she shares with ex-husband John McEnroe.

“This is one of the most memorable photos of my life,” Sean wrote via Instagram at the time. “The last time we were all together was at the 30-year Paper Moon Anniversary in 2003. I could cry tears of gratitude that everyone in this photo is still alive and that we were all able to come together again after so many years of hardship. The entire West Coast is burning, but if the O’Neal can reconcile, truly anything is possible.”

Former U.S. Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor has died. She was 93.

“Retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Sandra Day O’Connor died this morning in Phoenix, Arizona, of complications related to advanced dementia, probably Alzheimer’s, and a respiratory illness,” the Supreme Court said in a Friday, December 1, statement to Us Weekly.

O’Connor was appointed to SCOTUS in 1989 by former president Ronald Reagan, making her the first female justice on the panel. Reagan had promised in his campaign to nominate a woman to the Supreme Court, officially offering the job to O’Connor in June 1981.

“She is truly a person for all seasons,” Reagan said about O’Connor in his appointment speech, noting she possessed “those unique qualities of temperament, fairness, intellectual capacity and devotion to public good which have characterized the 101 brethren who have preceded her.”
