  • Obamas condemn federal immigration agents’ conduct: ‘This has to stop’

Former President Obama and Michelle Obama called on Americans to recognize the dangers of the increasingly violent Immigration and Customs Enforcement crack-downs in the wake of the deadly shooting of an ICU nurse in Minneapolis.

“The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy,” the Obamas wrote in a lengthy statement posted on social media. “It should also be a wake up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.”

Pretti, a 37-year-old Department of Veterans Affairs nurse, was seen using his cellphone to record ICE members deploying Saturday morning in a snowy Minneapolis neighborhood. Witness videos show federal immigration agents shoving a woman and Pretti coming to her assistance. He was then pushed and doused with a chemical spray, then tackled to the ground. He was shot 10 times.

On Sunday, demonstrations occurred across the country to protest the tactics of federal immigration agents and comments by President Trump and others in his administration. Several administration officials seemed to blame Pretti for his death because he was carrying a weapon during a protest.

Minneapolis police said Pretti had a license to carry a concealed weapon; gun rights groups have decried some administration rhetoric and called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara on Sunday almost begged for calm for his city that has witnessed hundreds of ICE agents moving in. O’Hara told CBS News “this is not sustainable,” and that his officers were stretched thin trying to contain “all of this chaos.”

“This has to stop,” the Obamas wrote.

“Federal law enforcement and immigration agents have a tough job,” the Obamas wrote. “But Americans expect them to carry out their duties in a lawful, accountable way, and to work with, rather than against, state and local officials to ensure public safety.

“That’s not what we’re seeing in Minnesota. In fact, we’re seeing the opposite,” the former first couple wrote.

On Sunday, protests grew as people watched cellphone video captured by bystanders of Pretti’s shooting.

Pretti’s parents, Susan and Michael Pretti, in a statement reported by the Associated Press, described their son as “a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital.”

His shooting comes less than three weeks after an ICE agent shot an unarmed mother, Renee Nicole Good, in another Minneapolis neighborhood. The agency said she was attempting to harm an ICE agent although video of the incident appears to show her turning the wheel of her SUV away from the agent when he shot her in the face.

“For weeks now, people across the country have been rightly outraged by the spectacle of masked ICE recruits and other federal agents acting with impunity and engaging in tactics that seem designed to intimidate, harass, provoke and endanger the residents of a major American city,” the Obamas wrote, describing such methods as “unprecedented tactics.”

“The President and current administration officials seem eager to escalate the situation, while offering public explanations for the shootings of Mr. Pretti and Renee Good that aren’t informed by any serious investigation — and that appear to be directly contradicted by video evidence,” the Obamas wrote.

They called on Trump administration officials to “reconsider their approach” and work constructively with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other state and local authorities “to avert more chaos and achieve legitimate law enforcement goals.”

“In the meantime, every American should support and draw inspiration from the wave of peaceful protests in Minneapolis and other parts of the country,” the Obamas wrote. “They are a timely reminder that ultimately it’s up to each of us as citizens to speak out against injustice, protect our basic freedoms, and hold our government accountable.”

  • Greeley police officers shoot, kill suspect in Weld County

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was activated Friday after Greeley police officers shot and killed a suspect in Weld County.

According to the CIRT, several Greeley police officers were trying to apprehend a suspect in the 600 block of 27th Street Road in Garden City around 4:25 p.m. The CIRT said the male suspect was wanted for misdemeanor and felony charges, but did not specify the charges.

The suspect reportedly took off, and the officers ran after him.

The officers “attempted to use less lethal impact rounds, but the suspect did not surrender,” according to the CIRT. The suspect then allegedly turned and brandished a firearm before he was shot by officers.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Weld County Coroner’s Office will release his identity once his next of kin is notified.

The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has been activated and will investigate the shooting. No further details were provided.

  • Gunmen kill 2, injure 12 during shootout in crowd in Alabama capital city’s downtown, police say

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Rival gunmen shot at each other in a crowded downtown nightlife district in Alabama’s capital city Saturday night, killing two people and injuring 12 others in a chaotic street scene, police said.

The dead included a 43-year-old woman and a 17-year-old male, while five of the 14 people wounded were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, including a juvenile, police said.

No one had been arrested as of Sunday afternoon as police appealed to the public for information about the shooting and sorted through a complicated crime scene that involved multiple people firing at each other.

Police were still trying to piece together a motive for why the shooting started.

Police were called around 11:30 p.m. to what Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described as a “mass shooting” that happened within earshot of officers on routine patrol in downtown Montgomery.

“This was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,” Graboys said.

The shooters, he said, “did not care about the people around them when they did it.”

Seven of the 14 victims were under 20, and the youngest was 16, Graboys said. At least two of the victims were armed and the shooting began when someone targeted one of the 14 victims, Graboys said.

The gunfire prompted multiple people to pull their own weapons and start firing, Graboys said.

Multiple weapons and shell cases were recovered from the scene, Graboys said.

    Few other details were available.

It was a particularly busy weekend in Montgomery, with Alabama State University’s homecoming football game that day at Hornet Stadium, the Alabama National Fair ongoing at Garrett Coliseum and the Tuskegee University-Morehouse College rivalry football game having just ended at nearby Cramton Bowl.

Mayor Steven Reed told reporters there were police units within 50 feet (15 meters) when the shooting broke out and that the shooters “had no regard for human life.”

Investigators were reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses and potential suspects.

“We will do everything we need to gather every bit of evidence to chase down whoever is involved,” Graboys said.

  • Texas Ice facility shooting: Republicans blame ‘radical left’ as Democrats focus on victims and gun control

A deadly shooting at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) field office in Dallas on Wednesday morning, has predictably been met with markedly different reactions from the political right and left.

While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed shortly after the news broke that detainees were the victims of the sniper attack on the facility and no federal agents had been injured, the president and his allies were quick to frame the shooting as an attack on Ice and place blame on the “radical left”.

DHS previously said that two detainees were killed, but later issued a clarifying statement saying that the shooting killed only one detainee. It adds that two other detainees were shot and are in critical condition.

Related: Texas Ice facility shooting: what we know so far about deadly attack

Official statements have notably lacked much focus on the victims having been detainees, and at a press conference on Wednesday morning officials said the identities of the victims would not be released at this time. Meanwhile, figures on the left have centered on the victims’ families, pushed for greater gun control and urged a rejection of anti-immigrant sentiment.

Donald Trump rushed to politicize the incident, blaming the violence squarely on “Radical Left Terrorists” and the Democratic party. “This violence is the result of the Radical Left Democrats constantly demonizing Law Enforcement, calling for ICE to be demolished, and comparing ICE Officers to “Nazis”, he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

JD Vance called the shooting an “obsessive attack on law enforcement” that “must stop”. The vice-president claimed it was carried out by “a violent left-wing extremist” who was “politically motivated to go after law enforcement”.

DHS secretary Kristi Noem also said: “This shooting must serve as a wake-up call to the far-left that their rhetoric about Ice has consequences. Comparing Ice Day-in and day-out to the Nazi Gestapo, the Secret Police, and slave patrols has consequences.”

The FBI has said that authorities recovered shell casings with “anti-Ice messaging” near the shooter, but officials say the investigation is ongoing and have neither confirmed the motive behind the attack, nor corroborated claims about the shooter’s ideological background.

The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of targeted violence. The DHS has also said the shooter “fired indiscriminately” at the Ice facility, “including at a van in the sallyport where the victims were shot”. The attacker died from a self-inflicted gun wound.

Greg Abbott, the Republican Texas governor and staunch Trump ally, went as far as branding the attack an “assassination” and said that “Texas supports Ice”. He wrote on X: “This assassination will NOT slow our arrest, detention, & deportation of illegal immigrants. We will work with ICE & the Dallas Police Dept. to get to the bottom of the assassin’s motive.”

Texas senator Ted Cruz also invoked the recent killing of rightwing commentator Charlie Kirk as he told reporters that political violence “must stop” and rebuked politicians who have been critical of Ice. “Your political opponents are not Nazis,” he raged at Democrats, who he accused of “demonizing” Ice. “This has very real consequences,” he said. He later acknowledged that the motive of the shooter is not known for a fact after a reporter brought up reports that the victims were detainees.

The attack comes amid fears that the Trump administration plans to mount a brutal crackdown on leftwing organizations and amid the censorship of critical or nuanced commentary in the aftermath of Kirk’s killing, targeting anyone from visa-holders in the US to late-night talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel.

As with Kirk’s death, Trump’s allies stand accused of using the Dallas incident to score “political points” against the left as it comes down hard against free speech that is at odds with the administration.

Marc Veasey, a Democratic representative for Texas who represents the area where the shooting took place, told Notus that political “gamesmanship” was already spiraling out of control before anyone had real answers, and said he was “sickened” by officials’ focus on law enforcement and lack of acknowledgement that the victims were detainees.

He added that he lacked trust in the FBI, which had become “overly political” under Trump, and said smears against Democrats were not helpful, citing that the GOP also routinely call colleagues on the left “Marxists”. “We have to start condemning this rhetoric from both sides,” Veasey said. “I was hoping that after the assassination of Charlie Kirk that we would have learned lessons and that we realize that this is not about gamesmanship. This is not about one-upsmanship … This is about public safety.”

Former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who now leads gun violence prevention group, said her heart broke for the victims’ families and urged leaders to take action against the “gun crime crisis” gripping the country.

Representative Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, wrote on X: “Leave it to this administration to use a shooting against immigrant detainees to score political points and further provoke violence. We have to get guns off our streets and reject xenophobic and anti-immigrant sentiment that makes all of us less safe.”

Fellow Pennsylvania representative Malcolm Kenyatta said: “Kristi Noem couldn’t get to Twitter fast enough to use the Dallas ICE shooting for political points. But local news now says it was detainees who were shot – not ICE agents.”

  • Man charged with murder in deadly New Hampshire country club shooting

Man charged with murder in deadly New Hampshire country club shooting

A 23-year-old man is facing murder charges after a deadly shooting at a New Hampshire country club on Saturday.

According to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, Hunter Nadeau, 23, is accused of fatally shooting 59-year-old Robert Steven DeCesare with a handgun at Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua on Saturday night.

Authorities say there is no known connection between Nadeau and DeCesare.

Nadeau also shot and wounded two other adults. Their conditions have not been released.

Initial police reports indicated that two suspects had fled the scene. However, after reviewing surveillance footage, investigators confirmed that there was only one shooter.

Boston 25 News Reporter Michael Raimondi spoke with local resident Tyler Holmes, who had just arrived home with his wife and two-year-old son when they heard gunfire nearby.

“We could hear gunshots from our house,” Holmes said. “I heard quite a few at first. Didn’t hear any for a while, then heard a few more. It was mostly the ambulances and sirens I heard.”

Nashua Mayor James Donchess called the incident a tragedy for the community.

“In a community like ours, this is a big tragedy that there would be such an incident,” Mayor Donchess said. “Thinking about the families that were affected, and for us, it’s sad that it happened in our community.”

Nadeau has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, with additional charges likely, according to the Attorney General’s Office, in connection with the other shooting victims.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Ninth Circuit Court in Nashua.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.

  • Detectives say that shooting in Pierce County home was a case of self-defense

A Pierce County man is dead after a homeowner said he was trying to break into his house.

The deadly shooting happened at a home on 13th Avenue Court East in Spanaway just before 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies say the homeowner called 911, saying someone was banging at his back door, trying to break in.

“Deputies arrived within minutes in the neighborhood,” said Deputy Carly Cappetto.

When they arrived, the found a 36-year-old male on the back porch that had been shot.

They tried to save his life, but he succumbed to his injuries.

The man’s mother identified him as Russell Terry, a father of five.

He was living with his grandmother, who had moved to the neighborhood nearly 30 years ago.

Terry was a plumber who relatives say was “deeply loved.”

Relatives also said the two men knew each other, that their children had played together.

Investigators say it looks like a case of self-defense.

Neighbor Ameer Hall said he heard the gunshots.

Hall says that most loud popping noises here were often fireworks.

In fact, he thought that it was fireworks this time too.

“It sounded like a gun,” Hall said. “But I didn’t believe it. I’m like ‘not in this neighborhood.’”

Neighbors said that Terry was caught on their Ring camera just moments before the shooting, banging on their doors, too.

Deputy Cappetto says there is surveillance video that also supports the homeowner’s accounts of what happened that morning.

    The homeowner wasn’t arrested.

Cappetto says detectives don’t believe what the homeowner did is a crime.

“So, at this time, we are not looking at arresting the homeowner,” she said. “And this is being investigated as a case of self-defense.”

The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office will decide whether to file charges against the homeowner.

We tried to reach out to speak with the homeowner, but he declined to talk.

  • 3 people shot in Bronx as vigil held amid rash of recent deadly gun violence

BRONX, New York (WABC) — Three people were shot in the Bronx on Wednesday morning, one fatally, hours before anti-gun violence advocates and community members had planned to gather to denounce the rash of shootings across the borough.

The most recent shootings happened on College Avenue in the Claremont section just after 8:30 a.m.

A 37-year-old man, identified as Ryan Hines, was shot in the chest and killed. A 62-year-old man was shot in the arm, and a 59-year-old victim was shot in the buttocks.

“All I hear is ‘pow, pow, pow, pow, pow!’ I’m wondering what happened – I see my mom dragging because it’s her boyfriend that got shot,” said a witness.

The suspect was taken into custody.

Police sources say an enraged tenant shot and killed the building’s porter, and wounded two others, one of them a neighbor, over some sort of dispute.

A man named Robert said the accused shooter, his friend, has psychiatric issues.

“I know him for over six years. He’s non-violent, but I know that his life was being threatened,” Robert said.

It comes as community members and advocates held a vigil at Haffen Park on Wednesday night, where a shooting claimed the life of one person and injured several others.

The mother of one of the victims, Jaceil Banks, spoke out at the vigil, making her remarks in front of the borough president, district attorney, and state assembly speaker.

Community members and advocates held a vigil at Haffen Park on Wednesday night for the victims of senseless gun violence in the Bronx.

Advocates say gun violence continues to plague the borough and is tearing communities apart.

An outbreak of gun violence erupted over an eight-hour span Tuesday in the Bronx, where four separate shootings left two people dead, and another two injured, including an Amazon delivery worker.

That worker, a 31-year-old man, was caught in a crossfire when two individuals began shooting at each other at the corner of Bryant Avenue and East Tremont Avenue in the West Farms section just after 2:30 p.m.

It was the third shooting in the Bronx on Tuesday, coming after two deadly shootings earlier in the day.

There have been at least 20 people shot in the Bronx since last Friday.

The Bronx has about 1.2 million fewer residents compared to Brooklyn, yet the Bronx has more shooting victims so far this year — 222 compared to at least 213. The mayor on Wednesday promised a full mobilization of resources.

“The issue with the Bronx – we’re seeing gangs, young shooters and recidivism,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “That’s a terrible equation.”

On Saturday, police arrested and charged four gunmen for allegedly opening fire at a basketball tournament at Haffen Park. The youngest of the victims is 17-year-old Anthonaya Campbell, who remains in critical condition with a bullet lodged behind her eye.

“We’re using the generation of our young people because of the senseless violence,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

Clark attended the vigil for victims of the tournament shooting on Wednesday night. She says she is now zeroing in on gun traffickers who are supplying the youth.

“I need people to tell me how they are getting these guns here in the Bronx,” Clark said. “We don’t have gun makers here in the Bronx, but meanwhile, 13-year-olds are shooting guns… 15-year-olds, 18-year-olds. They have to be getting them from somewhere, they’re not old enough even to purchase them. So, somebody is giving it to them. Those are the cases now that I’m now also focusing on and tracking down as to how the guns are getting here.”

Hospitals in Bronx have been very busy treating shooting victims this month, despite a citywide drop in gun violence in July, and assurances from state and city leaders that the NYPD doesn’t need help right now from the National Guard.

“I don’t see the need for it, at all. We are doing an amazing job,” Adams said. “We know what to do here, and we will continue to do that.”

President Donald Trump has threatened to send National Guard troops, as he has in Washington, D.C., into other cities with Democratic governors and mayors.

Man killed, 2 others hurt in separate late night Minneapolis shootings

Man killed, 2 others hurt in separate late night Minneapolis shootings

    01:50

MINNEAPOLIS — A man is dead and two others are hurt in separate shootings that happened late Wednesday and early Thursday in Minneapolis.

Police say the first shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday near 19th Street East and First Avenue South, where two women were hurt by gunfire. Both victims later showed up separately at a local hospital and are expected to survive. A man in his 20s was shot dead at the same location on Tuesday.

The second shooting occurred overnight Thursday less than a mile northeast near East 15th Street and Portland Avenue, where police say an argument led to a man’s death — the city’s fifth homicide in a matter of days.

Officers found the victim with life-threatening gunshot wounds and he soon died at the scene. Police believe the suspect likely left on foot.

“We’re going to do everything we can to pinpoint those individuals who are in that community, in that neighborhood, causing the harm,” Sgt. Garrett Parten said. “We’re concerned for the neighbors, the people that live there, and we’ll do everything we can to bring people to justice.”

Police say they don’t have much information on what led up to the gunfire, but they have forensic scientists processing the scene.

No arrests have been made in either shooting.
