  • Derrick Thompson offered plea deal in Minneapolis crash that killed 5 young women

Derrick Thompson offered plea deal in Minneapolis crash that killed 5 young women

MINNEAPOLIS — A man who is accused of killing five young women in a south Minneapolis car crash in June of last year has been offered a plea deal, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office confirmed.

Derrick Thompson, 28, was offered a plea agreement where he would plead guilty to five counts of criminal vehicular homicide while causing the accident and fleeing the scene. In return, the five other charges of criminal vehicular homicide while operating a motor vehicle in a gross or negligent manner would be dismissed.

The attorney’s office says the dropped charges are alternative charges of the same conduct, so if the case were to go to trial, Thompson would still only face sentencing on a maximum of five counts.

If Thompson accepts the plea deal, he would serve between 32 and 38 years in prison.

The offer remains open until Thompson’s next court date, which is scheduled for Nov. 4.

In December 2023, Thompson pleaded not guilty to drugs and weapons charges stemming from the crash.

    Details of the crash

Sabiriin Ali, 17; Sahra Gesaade, 20; Salma Abdikadir, 20; Sagal Hersi, 19; and Siham Adam, 19, were in a vehicle going through the intersection of Lake Street and Second Avenue on June 16, 2023, when a speeding driver, later identified as Thompson, slammed into them. All five were killed.

According to a criminal complaint, shortly before the crash, a state trooper on Interstate 35W near 46th Street saw a driver in a black Cadillac Escalade speeding and “weaving in and out of traffic lanes in a reckless manner.” The trooper clocked the vehicle’s speed at 95 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Before the trooper could activate their emergency lights or sirens, the driver “abruptly cut across all four lanes of traffic,” exiting I-35W at the Lake Street exit, still allegedly speeding down the ramp.

The driver of the Escalade sped through a red light and slammed into a Honda Civic traveling through a green light, the complaint states. The cars “collided violently” causing “catastrophic damage” to both of them, per the complaint.

Officers at the scene found a Hertz rental car receipt listing Derrick Thompson as the renter outside of the Escalade. The receipt showed the vehicle was rented at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport just 24 minutes before the fatal crash.

Thompson ran away from the scene of the crash but was arrested nearby. He was hospitalized after the crash but has been discharged and taken into custody, per the complaint.

While searching Thompson’s rental car, police found a loaded semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine, more than 2,000 fentanyl pills, 13 MDMA pills and about 35 grams of cocaine, according to the complaint. Thompson also faces federal charges of possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime.

Investigators said Thompson’s “driving record includes numerous charges and convictions for driving after suspension and driving after revocation,” and that his Minnesota driver’s license was revoked in 2018 and reinstated in 2023.

In September 2018, Thompson crashed his car in California, striking a woman from North Carolina who was on vacation, putting her in a coma for 20 days. She survived and partially recovered.

Inside the car, police found $20,000 in cash and more than 17 pounds of marijuana. He pleaded guilty to multiple felonies and received an eight-year prison sentence, but was released a few months before the fatal Minneapolis crash.

Thompson is the son of former state Rep. John Thompson, DFL-St. Paul.

St. Paul girl, 5, dies following Lake Elmo crash

St. Paul girl, 5, dies following Lake Elmo crash

    01:27

LAKE ELMO, Minn. — A man is accused of being under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance when he crashed into a stalled car, killing a 5-year-old girl, according to charges filed in Washington County on Monday.

The 47-year-old man from St. Paul was charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide — one for operating a vehicle in a grossly negligent manner and another for operating a vehicle while under the influence of any combination of alcohol or a controlled substance.

Around 8:45 p.m. on Jan. 20, a car was stalled in the left lane of eastbound Highway 36 at Lake Elmo Avenue in Lake Elmo. That’s when another driver hit the vehicle from behind while traveling at “highway speeds.”

There were two children in the stalled vehicle, a 5-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, along with their dad, who had been driving the vehicle. The girl, Morgan Rae Petersen, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died. The injuries to the other two were less serious.

Charges say a reconstruction of the crash revealed the suspect had been traveling at 62-63 mph at the point of impact but had been going as fast as 81 mph five seconds before the crash. The speed limit in the area is 65 mph.

Reconstruction experts for the Minnesota State Patrol noted the road had been clear and dry at the time of the incident and that the flashing lights of the stalled vehicle were visible from about a fourth of a mile away, charges say.

The state patrol filed a search warrant to get a blood sample from the driver, saying he smelled like alcohol. According to the warrant, the man admitted to law enforcement that he had consumed two beers “earlier.”

A blood test done about four hours after the crash revealed the suspect had a blood alcohol concentration of .056 in addition to the presence of Clonazepam, which he is prescribed, according to the complaint.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — One person is dead and five others are injured after a three-car hit-and-run crash in Philadelphia’s Holmesburg section on Friday night.

It happened around 9 p.m. near the intersection of State Road and Ashburner Street.

According to police, a silver Nissan SUV was traveling northbound on State Road when it made a left turn onto Ashburner Street.

While making the turn, the Nissan reportedly struck a black Honda that was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed.

The man accused of killing at least eight people in a bus crash on a Florida highway told investigators he smoked marijuana oil the night before and was in another accident three days earlier, according to an arrest report. Bryan Maclean Howard has been charged with eight counts of driving under the influence manslaughter after authorities say his pickup truck hit a bus and sent it off the road Tuesday morning.

According to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Howard told an investigator he was hanging out with a friend who had a medical marijuana card Monday night and smoked marijuana oil with him. Before Howard went to bed, he said he also took some prescription medications.

On Tuesday, Howard left his parents’ house at around 6:30 a.m. to drive to a methadone clinic in Ocala, Florida, for treatment of a chipped vertebrae in his back, according to the arrest report.

Howard said he was driving carefully because he crashed his mother’s car into a tree three days earlier while trying to avoid an animal that ran in front of him, according to the report.

Howard’s eyes were bloodshot and watery during the interview with the highway patrol and his speech was thick and slurred, according to the report. After Howard was arrested Tuesday afternoon, a breath test found he had a blood alcohol level of 0.000%.

A judge ordered Howard held without bond during a virtual court appearance Wednesday morning. His next court appearance is scheduled for June.

1 dead after car crashes, tumbling into Malibu Canyon

One person was killed Wednesday after a car careened off the road in the Malibu hills, authorities said.

The deadly crash occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Malibu Canyon Road near Adamson Flat, less than two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash shut down traffic in both directions of Malibu Canyon Road, a two-lane stretch that cuts through the Santa Monica Mountains, uniting Calabasas with Malibu and Pacific Coast Highway.

The road curves along the hills and can be treacherous, with steep drop-offs into the canyon below. The passage has been the site of multiple fatal crashes over the years.

Aerial footage Wednesday night from KTLA-TV showed a gray-silver vehicle had tumbled more than 100 feet off the cliffside into the brush and rocky ravine below. Firefighters were traversing the canyon to reach the vehicle.

It’s unclear what led to the crash, which is under investigation by the CHP. The L.A. County Medical Examiner-Coroner responded to the scene; the identity of the person who died was not released.

A large response by firefighters and police for a vehicle that went over the side of a canyon in Malibu on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

    (KTLA)

In October, 25-year-old Luis Gonzalez died on Malibu Canyon Road when his car rolled over and tumbled over an embankment about a mile north of Pacific Coast Highway.

In 2022, two vehicles collided along the road, killing 18-year-old Skylar Scripter and injuring several others.

Wednesday’s fatal crash comes months after four Pepperdine University students were killed when they were struck by a car as they stood alongside Pacific Coast Highway. Then-22-year-old motorist Fraser Bohm was charged with murder and manslaughter. The incident revived safety concerns about speeding motorists in and around the scenic coastal enclave.

A 26-year-old woman facing homicide charges in a South Carolina crash last year that killed a bride on her wedding night has been released on bail.

Jamie Lee Komoroski was released Friday after posting $150,000 bond, according to Charleston County Sheriff’s Office inmate records. She had been jailed since April 2023 on one count of reckless homicide and three felony counts drunken driving resulting in great bodily injury.

CBS affiliate WCSC reports that, according to court records, Komoroski will be placed on house arrest and will only be allowed to leave her home for medical emergencies or court orders. She will also be required to wear an alcohol monitoring device.

On the night of April 28, 2023, authorities said Komoroski was behind the wheel of a rental car that rear-ended a golf cart carrying newlyweds Samantha Miller and Aric Hutchinson in Folly Beach, a city located on Folly Island southeast of Charleston. They had been married just hours earlier, and Miller was still in her wedding dress.

Miller died in the crash and Hutchinson suffered a brain injury and numerous broken bones. Two other family members riding in the golf cart were also injured.

Komoroski had a blood alcohol level about three times the state’s legal limit, according to a toxicology report released by the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division. Investigators said she was driving the car at about 65 miles per hour when she struck the golf cart.

Last October, Hutchinson reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit brought against two bars which he accused of overserving Komoroski before the crash.

The crash happened around 4:15 a.m. on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge just before Treasure Island.

CHP says the two victims were occupants of a MINI Cooper that was hit by a pickup truck.

A third person in the MINI and the driver of the truck transported to the hospital. It is unclear how injured those individuals are.

  • Helicopter with 6 on board crashes near Baker in San Bernardino County; CEO of Nigerian bank killed

Helicopter with 6 on board crashes near Baker in San Bernardino County; CEO of Nigerian bank killed

BAKER, Calif. (KABC) — The CEO of one of Nigeria’s largest banks was killed on Friday when a helicopter he was riding in crashed near Baker in San Bernardino County.

Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Bank, was among six people on board when the helicopter crashed shortly after 10 p.m. His death was confirmed by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization and formerly Nigeria’s finance minister, in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the helicopter crashed east of Interstate 15 near Halloran Springs Road, which is near the California-Nevada border and about an 80-mile drive from Las Vegas.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the helicopter – a Eurocopter EC 120 – had six people aboard. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB said investigators would arrive on Saturday and begin gathering information.

The sheriff’s department said they had not found any survivors, but declined to elaborate.

The helicopter took off from Palm Springs Airport around 8:45 p.m. and was en route to Boulder City, Nevada. Boulder City is about 26 miles southeast of Las Vegas, where the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers are set to play in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday.

Halloran Springs Road crosses over the 15 Freeway in an area known to travelers for an abandoned gas station with a sign declaring “Lo Gas” and “Eat.” It’s located in a remote area of the Mojave Desert, with an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet. Logs from the California Highway Patrol show there was rain and snow in the area at about the time of the crash.

The crash comes just three days after a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter crashed in the mountains outside San Diego on Tuesday during historic downpours. Five Marines were killed.

  • Uninvolved driver killed when high-speed pursuit ends in violent crash in South L.A.

Uninvolved driver killed when high-speed pursuit ends in violent crash in South L.A.

A burglary suspect being chased by law enforcement crashed into two vehicles in South Los Angeles early Wednesday, killing one of the innocent drivers.

The pursuit started around 1:30 a.m. after the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a burglary call in Rancho Palos Verdes, the department said in a news release.

Deputies saw at least four suspects get into a white Lexus and a black Porsche, authorities told KTTV Channel 11. Deputies chased them onto the 110 Freeway, where the suspects drove with their headlights off.

The Porsche exited the freeway during the pursuit, and deputies continued to chase the Lexus. Deputies called off their car pursuit because of excessive speeds but followed from the air and notified the California Highway Patrol, which picked up the chase on the freeway, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The CHP did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Times.

Not long after, the Lexus crashed into two other vehicles near the intersection of Imperial Highway and Olive Street in Broadway-Manchester, the Los Angeles Police Department said. Around 2:20 a.m., firefighters responded to reports of one person ejected from their vehicle in the crash and another person trapped in their car.

A driver not involved in the pursuit was killed in the collision, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Brian Humphrey, and three ambulances took patients to hospitals. There was no immediate information about their ages or genders.

Three people in the Lexus were taken into custody and also treated for their injuries, according to news reports.

  • Illinois semitruck crash causes

    Illinois semitruck crash causes

A semitruck carrying anhydrous ammonia overturned in Illinois in a multi-vehicle crash that caused “multiple fatalities,” Illinois State Police confirmed to CBS News on Saturday.

The accident, which involved “multiple” vehicles, happened about a half-mile east of Teutopolis, Illinois, on U.S. Highway 40 on Friday at about 9:25 p.m. local time, police said in a statement reviewed by CBS News. The impact of the accident caused the truck to begin leaking, prompting a partial evacuation of area residents, police said.

An official from the Illinois State Police called the accident “very serious” and described the situation as “fluid” during a news conference held on Saturday morning

In the news conference, Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns said that there was a “large plume” from the ammonia leak. Because the leak caused “terribly dangerous air conditions in the northeast area of Teutopolis,” an evacuation was ordered within an approximate one-mile radius of the crash, Kuhns said.

Police said in a statement that there “are multiple fatalities” related to the crash. The number of deaths was not immediately disclosed in the statement or in the morning news conference. During the news conference, officials declined to comment on what caused the deaths. Teutopolis fire chief Tim McMahon did confirm that five people were airlifted and one person transported by ground to area hospitals. It’s not clear what their condition was or why they were transported.

The air conditions meant emergency responders had to “wait” and “mitigate the conditions” before they could “get actual access” to the crash site, Kuhns said. Kuhns said the crash site covered a “fairly large area.”

The highway between Teutopolis and Montrose is closed. Crews were working to contain the leak, and cleanup was ongoing as of 9:15 a.m. local time Saturday.

“We have a lot of brave firemen, EMT, hazmat specialists, police officers that are working on the scene as we speak,” said Kuhns.

Inhalation of anhydrous ammonia, which is toxic, can be fatal at high concentrations. The ammonia can also burn the skin and eyes, and cause severe respiratory injuries.  In the news conference, one official called the substance “terrible.”

Teutopolis is a town of just over 1,600 people about 92 miles southeast of Springfield, Illinois, the state’s capital.
